Soul Asylum is an American alternative rock band, formed in 1981 under the moniker Loud Fast Rules, hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Formed of drummer Dave Pirner, guitarist and backing vocalist Dan Murphy and bassist Karl Mueller, before Pirner move to lead vocalist, Loud Fast Rules released two songs on the Reflex Records cassette “Barefoot and Pregnant in 1982. In 1983 the named changed to Soul Asylum and the band soon developed a devoted following around the Misseapolis/St. Paul’s area through dynamic stage shows and the honing of the rage of punk, the classic guitar power of rock and emotively entrenched lyrics of soul.

The band’s debut album “Say What You Will… Everything Can Happen” arrived in 1984 on an exclusive LP and cassette released through Twin/Tone Records, produced by Hüsker Dü’s Bob Mould. Soul Asylum’s sophomore album “Say What You Will, Clarence… Karl Sold the Truck” featured all of the previous albums’ songs plus additional material.

Two albums made the light of day in 1986 “Made to Be Broken” and “While You Were Out” and marked the replacement of Pat Morley with Grant Young. The two album’s earned the band critical success within the alternative rock genre and led to a relentless touring schedule and a swelling fan base.

After signing with A&M and crafting the EP “Clam Dip & Other Delights”, a parody of A&M founder Herb Alpert’s iconic “Whipped Cream & Other Delights” album, Soul Asylum released their fifth studio album “Hang Time” in 1988. Produced by Lenny Kaye “Hang Time” has long been considered Soul Asylum’s finest, most melodic and powerfully emotional album, which saw approval from the alternative genre and college radio.

With increasingly high expectations from A&M, and after the disappointing release of their subsequent album “And the Horse They Rode In On” in 1990 – a semi-live album – the band were dropped from A&M. Riding the indie wave of Nirvana’s “Nevermind”, Soul Asylum landed a deal with Columbia and released the album “Grave Dancer’s Union” to considerable radio airplay and MTV rotation. The album spawned the single “Runaway Train” which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard singles chart and earned the band a Grammy for Best Rock Song.

Soul Asylum failed to maintain such popular appeal and their two subsequent albums “Let Your Dim Light Shine” in 1995 and “Candy from a Stranger” in 1998 were comparative flops both in terms of critical recognition and commercial sales. After a considerable cooling-off period Soul Asylum’s next release arrived in 2006 with the album “The Silver Lining” and later “Delayed Reaction” in 2012.

Live reviews

Minnesota alternative rock outfit Soul Asylum may not be a universally recognised name yet they have been consistently releasing material for close to 25 years and unlike a number of their contemporaries they have been touring with equal consistency and dedication.

The fanbase may not be gigantic, yet every time the group plays shows they are instant sell outs and are packed full of devoted followers who know the material well. The stage is left without decoration or distraction this evening in order to place the music at the very centre of this operation and the group steps out confidently before collecting their respective instruments and tearing into 'Never Really Been' and 'Without A Trace'. The audience instantly cheers at amp shaking volume to then be outdone by the bass notes and guitar riffs of 'Little Too Clean'. The show is a great mixture of fresh new material along with the much loved material from the album 'Grave Dancers Union' with a highlight of 'April Fool' saved for a gigantic encore performance.

Soul Asylum is an alt rock band and a old favorite of mine, I remember the one concert I went to that they played a 55-minute first set was heavy on material from this year’s mixed bag album, “Delayed Reaction.” Pirner dedicated “Lately” to “all the kids from Sandy Hook” school in Connecticut.

Highlights of the opening segment were the sing-along “Misery” and the closing punkabilly “Made To Be Broken,” the 1986 title track of Soul Asylum’s second album. The concert was slightly weird since most of the original members of the band were not there and they were a completely new band.

Regardless of the band seeming new, the lead singer was the same, he was all over, interacting with the crowd and feeding off the awesome crowd vibe which gave him more reason to be wild on stage. It was a pretty good concert and Soul asylums music is great, I just miss the original band.

Rochester, MN 2 November 2019. Show was fantastic!! Although I much prefer GA shows. I can't wait to see them at First Avenue in Minneapolis on 27 December. Dave... please play some old songs for those of us who have been fans since the early days.

My life is a soundtrack, i track my life through music, photography is my passion, my escape, my expression. Without both i have pieces missing, thankfully i’m blessed and get to combine both. Born in Manchester, lived in Australia for 22 years where i was heavily involved in the Australian Music Industry, firstly in bands (Singer) and then managing bands (all original), I moved back to the UK, Wales specifically 10 years ago and married my childhood sweetheart and life is good.

The eight date tour sees the bands also play Leeds’ Beckett Uni, O2 Ritz in Manchester, Hull, Nottingham, Bristol, Birmingham and London, at Camden’s iconic Electric Ballroom. Tickets are on pre-sale now – Pre-sale tickets here, Manchester pre-sale on Sept 9th at 10AM, with general on sale Friday Sept 9th at 10AM – General onsale tickets here.

Since the ‘80s, multi-Platinum Soul Asylum has been one of the most inspiring and hardworking bands in the rock scene, known for their raucous but emphatic combination of punk energy, guitar-fueled firepower, and songs that range from aggression to heartfelt. Their single ‘Runaway Train’, released in June 1993 became one of the biggest singles and from conquering the alternative nation’s heart Soul Asylum became an unstoppable crossover hit band. The single topped the charts around the world; it peaked at number five on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number seven in the UK. It claimed the top position on the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart, earning a gold sales certification from the Recording Industry Association of America, selling 600,000 copies in the US. Outside North America, it topped the charts in New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland and peaked within the top five on the charts in several other European countries.

The breakout hit went onto winning the Grammy Award for ‘Best Rock Song’ in 1994 and its moving music video became one of the defining videos of the MTV era, changing the lives of 21 missing children it helped reunite with their families. The visuals showed photographs and names of missing children, and ended with a plea from Pirner: “If you’ve seen one of these kids, or you are one of them, please call this number”. Alternative versions were edited for other countries and other children. 2022 also sees the band celebrate their 30th anniversary with a re-release of their defining triple-platinum album ‘Grave Dancers Union’, coming in October.

Iconic alternative punk rockers Everclear are one of the leading bands to emerge from the ‘90s. Led by their renowned frontman, guitarist and founder Art Alexakis, they are currently celebrating their 30th year anniversary with the rerelease of their cult and long out of print 1993 debut album ‘World Of Noise – 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition’, now remastered and available for the first time ever on digital streaming platforms. The band has been celebrating the release with a milestone 25+ date North American 30th Anniversary Tour, before heading to the UK in November and Australia in January 2023.

Since forming in 1992, Everclear have enjoyed a lengthy and successful career, spanning eleven studio releases, four certified Gold or Platinum, selling over six million records worldwide, with accolades including a 1998 Grammy nomination for ‘So Much For The Afterglow’. The massive success of albums like ‘Sparkle And Fade’, including the underrated hit ‘Heroin Girl’, the smash hit ‘Santa Monica’ and subsequent single ‘Father Of Mine, firmly catapulted the band to mainstream success. Everclear became a movie soundtrack favourite, ‘Local God’ was included in Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Romeo+Juliet’ soundtrack and their songs have been featured in movies including ‘American Pie’, ‘Scream 2’, and with the band making a rare cameo appearance in ‘Loser’.

In recent years, Everclear’s charismatic frontman Alexakis created and runs the annual ‘Summerland Tour’, which features a package of popular ‘90s alt rock bands, and also released his first solo album, ‘Sun Songs’, released via The End Records/BMG, in 2019. The album coincided with Alexakis going public with something very personal, his diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, a condition that hasn’t slowed the charismatic artist down.

Soul Asylum and Everclear Co-Headlining November UK tour is on pre-sale now, Manchester pre-sale on Sept 9th at 10AM – Pre-sale tickets here. General onsale on Sept 9th at 10AM BST – General onsale tickets here.

What to do on a cold Wednesday November night in Leeds? Stay in and watch a bunch of C-list celebs’ and a Pantomine-villain MP eating animals’ dangly bits in the Australian jungle – or enjoy the double delights on offer at the 500-capacity music venue The Old Woollen?

If you are a rock music fan – No contest. Off to the gig it is… Not one US rock band, but two; and not any old rock bands either. Soul Asylum and Everclear sharing the bill as part of an eight-date UK tour. This gig moved from Beckett Uni to The Old Woollen recently. Lovely room it is too.

So, here we have two American multi-platinum alternative rock legends, Soul Asylum and Everclear on their second gig of the tour which kicked off the day before in Southampton. They also play Manchester, Blackpool, Nottingham, Bristol, Birmingham and London, at Camden’s Electric Ballroom.

Since the ‘80s, Soul Asylum has been one of the most inspiring and hardworking bands in the rock scene, known for their raucous but emphatic combination of punk energy, guitar-fueled firepower, and songs that range from aggression to heartfelt.

Soul Asylum – Dave Pirner, Michael Bland, Winston Royle and Ryan Smith – deliver 16 songs tonight, with plenty from their latest, 2020-released album “Hurry Up And Wait”,  kicking off with, “Got It Pretty Good”, “Somebody To Shove” and “Oxygen”. They sling in now cover, Victoria Williams’ “Summer Of Drugs”, and end with “Just Like Anyone”, “Closer To The Stars” and “April’s Fool”.

soul asylum tour europe

Their superb set was strangely interspersed with “dad jokes” from Mr Pirner. Not sure if that’s his usual thing, but it was quite a nice element, despite the good natured groans from the fans at these lame jokes. Thankfully the music was substantially better than the humour!

A much louder, more engaged audience throughout Soul Asylum’s set compared to Everclear’s slot.

soul asylum tour europe

Sadly for Everclear, the sound mix was nowhere near as good as it is for Soul Asylum, but Everclear mean business too; opening with “So Much for The Afterglow”, “Everything To Everyone”, “Heroin Girl” and “Heartspark Dollarsign”.

Closing with “Strawberry”, “AM Radio”, “I Will Buy You A New Life” – in this song, Art, Freddy and Davey gathered around the centre stage microphone for harmony vocals, but the muddy sound mix meant very little was audible – and the best moment of their set, “Santa Monica”.

It took song # eight, “Wonderful” (of 13 songs the band played) to get the crowd singing along. The band cut three songs from their set as they ran out of time, a shame because their last song, “Santa Monica” had a lot more energy than the other songs.

soul asylum tour europe

But both bands were great value for the ticket price, and Soul Asylum definitely gave a performance worthy of big arenas and stadiums.

It was much more than just another gig; this was a real experience being in such an intimate venue up-close-and-personal with these two legendary US rock bands, compared to the size of gigs they do in the US and around the globe.

A night everyone in attendance will surely treasure for a long time in their memory bank. Summing up with a tabloidesque headline: : This double dream team definitely delights!

  • The venue opened last year and is a former mill dating back to 1830, now part of the Sunny Bank Mills complex. The new entertainment venue hosts a mix of music, comedy, theatre and spoken word. The mill was derelict for 50 years before the owners set about the renovation project. A really welcome addition to Leeds’ live music venues and a really welcoming space. We will be back there to cover more gigs in the future…

Soul Asylum Announce Live Tour Plans – “Back in Your Face” Tour Starts This August…

Soul asylum announce plans to get back on the road set to head out on a 27-city “back in your face” tour starts this august….

soul asylum tour europe

(Minneapolis, MN) – June 8, 2021 –  Soul Asylum  are more than ready to re-start their live shows after their 2020 best- selling tour in 15 years was cut short due to the Pandemic lockdown orders. The band played their last full, live date on March 11, 2020 at the Teragram Ballroom in Los Angeles. Like all tours that month, they got the news of the lockdown while waiting for soundcheck in San Diego and were forced to return to Minneapolis, cutting short their 25-date tour with six shows left hanging in the balance.

The quartet will rev up the tour bus for their new “Back In Your Face” tour beginning August 3 in Reading, PA before hitting 26 other cities, winding up in Maple Grove, MN on September 18.  Additional dates to be announced shortly,  Local H  and  Juliana Hatfield  support on all dates. The current  Soul Asylum  line-up features  Dave Pirner  as lead vocals/guitar,  Michael Bland  on drums,  Ryan Smith  on lead guitar, and  Wynston Roye  on bass.

“Being off the road and at home for this last 15 months has been as hard on all of us, as it has everyone in the world really,” explains  Pirner . “We haven’t been in one place, for this long, in the history of the band. We can’t wait to get back to the road and see our fans, get ready because these shows are going to be special!”

Soul Asylum  did anything but sit at home idle during this last 15 months. Leader  Pirner  and guitarist,  Ryan Smith  spent a good amount of the first six months of the Stay at Home orders doing weekly, Friday night Quarantine Sessions from Pirner’s living room. From those performances, the idea to record a few of the songs in this new acoustic format, sprung forth and the  Born Free  digital EP was released last October. In other exciting release news, the posthumous album from  PRINCE ,  Welcome 2 America , is set to release on July 30 and features a cover of Soul Asylum’s 2006 single “Stand Up and B Strong” alongside the eleven Prince originals.

Hurry Up and Wait  was released on April 17, 2020 to much fan and critical acclaim worldwide landing the band their highest Billboard Chart position since 1995’s Platinum selling  Let Your Dim Light Shine.  The new album was co-producer John Fields, who also worked on the band’s previous three albums. In addition, the group also decamped to a familiar spot: Nicollet Studios, the same place  SOUL ASYLUM  recorded one of their seminal early albums released on Twin/Tone Records, the 1986 LP  While You Were Out .

Soul Asylum Finally Set Dates For Last Years Album Tour

by Paul Cashmere on June 9, 2021

We can’t wait to get back to the road and see our fans, get ready because these shows are going to be special!”

Soul Asylum Announce Dates For “Back In Your Face” Tour

Soul Asylum are more than ready to re-start their live shows after their 2020 best- selling tour in 15 years was cut short due to the Pandemic lockdown orders.

Soul Asylum Finds Success

By Chris Mundy

Chris Mundy

June 15, 1993, Miami It’s Day 9 of the Alternative Nation Tour, but for Soul Asylum , it’s feeling a bit more like an alternate universe.

Sure, some things never change. Onstage singer Dave Pirner is spinning out of control, dreadlocks and sweat spraying from his head in an enormous, umbrellalike arch. Safely at dreads’ length, Karl Mueller is strolling back and forth, leisurely playing his bass and soaking up the spectacle, while guitarist Dan Murphy – perched on the drum riser – pounds his guitar with the same vehemence that Grant Young uses to punish his drums.

Yet outside this island of normalcy, things are getting weird. Very weird. Forget for just a moment that the band is currently playing to more than 10,000 screaming Floridians. The weirdness begins stage right. Here, tucked in front of the Screaming Trees and various Spin Doctors, who sit watching more like attentive fans than tour mates, stands the bottom line personified – Sony Records president Tommy Mottola – watching the Soul Asylum gig with one enormous, shit-eating grin. The band slugs its way through song after song from Grave Dancers Union , the album that has finally made the masses start pricking up their ears after years of critical reverence and the minimal album sales that usually accompany such acclaim. The boss, meanwhile, peers from the wings, periodically checking his investment and then immediately glancing at the crowd full of 15-year-olds diving toward the stage like salmon swimming upstream.

You see, over their 11-year existence, Soul Asylum have been called many things: Americas best live band; music-industry misfits; punk poets; insightful adults trapped in terminal adolescence; the last great gasp of life from the early-’80s Minneapolis music scene. They’ve even been toe-tagged as dead and gone. No one, however, has ever tossed around the word marketable .

But the bottom line is beaming, and – as everyone knows – there’s no ignoring the bottom line. And then, of course, there’s the screaming. Between songs, the June night is filled with the distinct mating cry of the adolescent female – a piercing wail straight out of British Invasion-era soundtracks and horror flicks – which hovers like a cloud in the Miami air. For a band that once kept playing a Tucson, Ariz., show until it had finally chased the last person from the bar, this is certainly a new wrinkle. After the show, Murphy grabs a beer and sinks into the dressing-room couch. “There were all these shrieking girls,” he says with a sip and a shit-eating grin of his own. “I thought my monitor was feeding back.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Because Soul Asylum have grown up loud and alone – singing about disenchantment and alienation to anyone willing to listen – they haven’t necessarily endeared themselves to the music-biz brass. More than a decade after the band first began pleading its case to the world, the group of rank outsiders is being told that it belongs after all and is taking the news with all the trust of a kid who has been beaten up on the playground for 10 straight days. On the 11th, he still expects to get smacked. Nowadays, when the music industry offers a congratulatory shake of the hand, Soul Asylum flinch.

“It’s not verbalized that it’s us vs. them, but we always have that mentality,” says Murphy. “If I look at the Top 50, I feel like we’ve worked harder than all those bands. Damn right. You can’t say, ‘Who are these guys?’ Fuck that. You can go to Tulsa, and there were a hundred people who saw us one time and maybe went out and bought a record. It’s not just some new advertising campaign kicking in.”

Advertising campaign or no, there is an incredible amount of activity whirling around Soul Asylum. It’s no wonder. While their last album, 1990’s Soul Asylum and the Horse They Rode In On , sold fewer than 70,000 copies, Grave Dancers Union has gone platinum, and the band is being treated to all the trappings that million-selling records bring. After making their network television debut last November on Late Night With David Letterman , Soul Asylum suddenly find themselves flooding the airwaves. Since Letterman, the band has played The Tonight Show , MTV’s Inaugural Ball, Spring Break special and Unplugged and Saturday Night Live . And now, with a moving video for its new single, “Runaway Train,” which features public-service-style listings of missing children, the band has become a legitimate news story – garnering segments on Today and CNN.

Stone Temple Pilots Unite With Live, Soul Asylum, Our Lady Peace For Epic '90s Throwback Tour

Alt-rock fest flannel nation unravels after everclear, candlebox drop out, music's road crews are overwhelmingly white and male. meet the people trying to change that.

“I knew the ‘Runaway Train’ video would generate some interest,” says Mueller. “But this has been pretty incredible.”

Almost as incredibly, Soul Asylum will play close to 230 gigs this year, including a recent stint opening for Guns n’ Roses in Europe and, now, the 44-city Alternative Nation Tour.

When one reels off changes, however, Grave Dancers Union is the most obvious starting point. While the mood of the album is just as desperate as records past, the presentation is more diverse and, in many spots, decidedly toned down. So while hard-core fans scream that the band has sold out, a whole slew of kids buying the album are talking about the brand-new group they’ve just discovered.

In truth, Grave Dancers Union is just one step past Soul Asylum and the Horse They Rode In On, which itself was one step past 1988’s Hang Time (which, therefore, was a couple steps beyond 1986’s Made to Be Broken ). The true importance of this most recent step, however, is that it’s not necessary to use the fast-forward button when listening to Grave Dancers Union . On past albums, Soul Asylum often followed their songwriting peaks with very abrupt valleys. Luckily, these days, the road is remarkably even. The topics are still personal or allegorical tales of strangers in familiar lands, the guitars are still distorted, and the tunes still rely on Pirner and Murphy’s vocal chemistry. Now, however, in between the feedback screeeeech of “99%,” the punk-and-circumstance stomp of “Somebody to Shove” or “Get On Out” and the metal-tinged posturing of “April Fool” come beautiful acoustic ballads (“Runaway Train,” “Homesick”) and songs whose urgency is balled up in one midtempo package (“Black Gold,” “New World”).

“We wrote a really cohesive record, kind of by accident, and it sounds really good,” says Murphy matter-of-factly. “I don’t think it was what people expected to hear. And the thing is, I think our band has changed quite a bit in the last five or six years.”

Pirner sees even less of a difference between Grave Dancers Union and the group’s 1984 debut, Say What You Will . “I sort of think that it’s all folk music, whether it’s really fast or really slow,” he says. “You’ve got three chords, an attitude, a story. I always thought punk rock was folk music. But when I started singing, there was no monitor, it was a million miles an hour, loud as all fuck. Everything got screamed. That was the only way it could fit. And that feels great. But it gets old. You have to start figuring out how you’re going to express other parts of your personality.”

‘It overshadowed everything else we did’ … Soul Asylum in 1993, with Dave Pirner middle bottom.

‘We found 21 missing kids’: Soul Asylum on making Runaway Train

David Pirner reveals why he wrote his ‘metaphor for depression’, while Tony Kaye recalls what inspired the video – which showed the faces of missing children and became a phenomenon

Dave Pirner , singer, songwriter

We were a garage punk band who recorded for an independent label and travelled in a van. Then I thought I was losing my hearing. I was having a sort of nervous breakdown and needed to get away from the noise. I started playing an acoustic guitar and ended up writing songs on it, one of which was Runaway Train. Initially it went “two souls laughing at the rain, one’s crazy and the other’s insane”. But once I started writing about what was going on with me, the proper words came in one sitting.

The first line, “Call you up in the middle of the night”, refers to a friend in New York who was kind enough to answer the phone whenever I called, no matter what time it was. I’d been fascinated by trains ever since I watched a TV show called Casey Jones when I was a kid, so I used a runaway train as a metaphor for depression that was spinning out of control. When we first played the song live at the University of Minnesota people loved it.

I took a practice-room tape to various labels in New York, and Columbia Records wanted us the most. We recorded Runaway Train with Michael Beinhorn, a great producer but highly demanding. If the vocal on it sounds world-weary, it’s because he made me sing it 100 times. He still hadn’t got what he wanted so he got Danny Murphy, our guitarist, to oversee the vocal session because he felt, correctly, I’d be more comfortable singing with a friend in there with me.

Replacing our drummer Grant Young during the session was an awful experience, but Sterling Campbell came in and I loved the way he played, so we asked him to play on Runaway Train and some other tracks. Then we went to a studio in LA and Booker T from the MGs put perfect keyboards on it. It was so cool having someone of that stature playing on my songs.

Runaway Train came out as the third single from our album Grave Dancers Union and just grew legs. It overshadowed everything else we did, but I’m pleased that the song has a resonance that is not about partying and screwing. It’s a sad and reflective song that reminds people that it’s not all candy out there, but that they’re not alone.

Tony Kaye , video director

Runaway Train was such a great song I could have filmed a brown paper bag for three minutes and it still would have been a hit, but I’ve always tried to do things that have a social relevance . On the way home from my office in Los Angeles, I saw a poster by the side of the road of a milk carton with a missing kid’s face on it. I thought: “That’s it!” I told Dave that I wanted to make a video featuring the faces of runaway or missing children.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children sent us the faces of the kids they wanted in the video. Dave was very easy to film singing the song and at the end we had a message: “If you’ve seen these kids call this number.” The record company were very supportive, although after it was first shown on MTV, they called saying: “No kids have come back. Can we replace the faces with shots of the band?” I said: “No, wait.” Then one came back, and another, and another. And it turned into this miraculous thing.

The first to come home was Elizabeth Wiles, a teenager who’d run away from home with an older guy. She’d been watching TV with friends, seen herself in the Runaway Train video and called her mom. It wasn’t always plain sailing for the families afterwards – kids don’t run away from happy homes – but maybe things had changed when they went back or they were older and able to cope better.

I was in the green room of a TV chatshow when they reintroduced a missing kid and their parents, and they were just overwhelmed. Some cases were very sad – they didn’t come back because they were dead – but each time a kid was found, we’d recut the video with a new missing person. We eventually found 21 of the 36 kids we featured. It worked because the song was perfect for it. I’d argue that it was the single most important thing that happened in the history of MTV, because it saved young people’s lives.

Progressive jam giants Umphrey's McGee‘s return to Las Vegas for the seventh installment of the massively popular UMBowl production was marked once again by a stand-out tour closing dual evening extravaganza where all stops were pulled out and the power given directly to the fans, for better or for worse.

On June 24, Round Records & ATO Records will release GarciaLive Volume Six: July 5, 1973 – Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders, the latest installment of the celebrated GarciaLive archival series. The three-CD set was recorded at the 200 capacity Lion’s Share club formerly located in the small town of San Anselmo, CA, just 20 miles north of San Francisco. The performance features Jerry Garcia performing with friend, mentor and legendary keyboardist/vocalist Merl Saunders. The duo is joined by drummer Bill Vitt and bassist John Kahn, who soon became a lifelong Garcia collaborator.
