in Personal Style , Travel Style on 02/03/23

I know packing can be challenging. Trust me, I’ve always been an over packer until I had no choice but to learn how to pack when we started living on the road full time. I’ve been living out of a suitcase since September 2021, so believe me when I tell you that I know what works and what doesn’t. That’s exactly why I wanted to write this post and share some outfit ideas for traveling and useful outfit formulas to help you create your own version of any of these looks with pieces you probably already have in your closet!

Of course a lot of these following outfits don’t work for all kinds of weather, but I do hope to at least provide inspiration and value on how to think about how to create your own outfit ideas for traveling . And also know that you can apply any of these tips to your every day life too!

Ready to learn how to create your own outfit ideas for traveling? Let’s do it!

How to start thinking about your own outfit ideas for traveling, outfit formula #1: any button down shirt + dress + sneakers or flat sandals, outfit formula #2: button down shirt + bottom piece of your choice + sneakers (or flat sandals), outfit formula #3: keep it simple, t-shirt + pants or midi skirt + sneakers or sandals (accessorize accordingly), outfit formula #4: a t-shirt dress + sneakers or sandals (that’s it), outfit formula #5: t-shirt or cami + long cardigan (or jacket) + pants + sneakers, bonus tip: pack your denim jacket, tips to help you pack better:, related travel style and capsule wardrobe posts you may also like:.

First things first; think about your destination.

Weather, season, what type of activities you’ll be doing, what type of clothes you’re comfortable with, etc. Then you add to the mix your own personal style and how much space you have in your suitcase. I always recommend packing light . Travel days are hard as they are already, so why add a heavy suitcase(s) to the mix? Especially if you are not going to wear a lot of these things!

That’s why it’s good to create your own outfit ideas for traveling way in advance before your trip.

I love writing about seasonal capsule wardrobes and about minimalism in general, but a couple of weeks ago I wrote a blog post with a 7-piece capsule wardrobe checklist that I really think you can find useful if you don’t know where to start!

There are 7 pieces I bring with me all the time and you will see them a lot in the upcoming photos styled in many different ways. Those pieces are:

  • A linen white button down shirt | Another GREAT linen option
  • A white T-shirt | (Best T-shirts and basic pieces in general are from this brand)
  • Leather White Sneakers (best sustainable sneakers without a doubt. Me and my husband both have these!). The problem with these is that you have to pre-order them. If you don’t like leather ones, here’s the link to the white canvas ones and I also like this brand a lot! (look for the Reign style )
  • A plain midi skirt (mine is sold out but this is where I usually get my skirts )
  • Wide leg pants ( comfiest and best fitting pants are from here )
  • Black Comfy Pants ( these are the best pants in the world!)
  • A plain crewneck sweater | My favorite sustainable sweaters are from this brand! It’s expensive but worth it, BUT this brand is also sustainable, fits well and it’s more affordable.

Outfit Formulas To Help You Create Your Own Travel Looks

Here are five outfit formulas I follow for most of my travel outfits . We just got back from spending 3 months in Turkey and I only brought one medium suitcase and didn’t buy a single thing!

So, I went back and looked at all the outfits I wore in Turkey for the past 3 months and that’s why I decided to write this post with the most basic (but still cute and stylish) outfit ideas for traveling . Because I noticed I really don’t have that many outfit formulas… I always follow the same rules but with different pieces and I was able to create over 60 different outfits in 3 months (without buying a single thing!). But more on that in the next blog post :)

So, without further ado, here are my top 5 fool-proof outfit formulas for creating cute travel outfits all the time:

Sign up to receive my most recent packing list here – I’m sharing exactly what I packed for 6 months of travel!

I always have 2 or 3 button shirts with me. I packed 3 for our recent Turkey trip; one green one, one white linen one and a chambray one. Button down shirts are your best friends when traveling! And this applies no matter where you go. They are so useful!

You can tie them around your waist, wear them as a beach cover up, layer them in many different ways and so much more! Here are some outfit ideas for traveling with a button down shirt following the outfit formula above. It’s simple, you only need the shirt, a dress and sneakers or flat sandals depending on the occasion.

Here’s how it looks like:

Check out this post “Capsule Wardrobe Checklist” for more ways I styled the same white button down shirt following the same outfit formula.

Again with the button down shirt , yes! They are that good!

This time I want to inspire you to style it with any bottom piece of your choice. Really, it can be a skirt, pants, shorts, jeans… Anything! I am really passionate about showing you all the different ways you can style a basic piece like this one!

Here you have 3 examples:

Cute Outfit Ideas for Traveling with a button down shirt

I never travel without at least one white and one black T-shirt. Actually, I always travel with at least 3 different white t-shirts . They are so versatile!

I know you may think they are not the most practical because they are white, but I still insist, they are great for traveling and they make it so easy to create your own outfit ideas for traveling!

You can style them casually yes, but you can also dress them up with a jacket or the right accessories. Never underestimate the power of a good T-shirt!!

Outfit Ideas for Traveling with a White T-shirt

This is my favorite brand for T-shirts and basic pieces in general. They are excellent quality and not too expensive. Plus, they are sustainable too!

This is my way of saying that you need a T-shirt dress in your life! Something simple, good quality and not too crazy. I originally was going to get a black one, but went for this green option last minute and I’m so glad I did!

It’s so easy to style. I wore it to go out with sandals and a denim jacket , for easy hikes with my favorite travel Birkenstocks and with white sneakers for an easy breezy, yet cute look! (browse the best sustainable sneakers here!)

Easy and Cute Outfit Ideas for Traveling with a T-shirt dress

This is another solid outfit formula that you can use to explore a new city and it’s also great for travel days!

Our trip started super warm, but as we headed east and then north, it got a lot colder so I had to get creative with the layers. I wish I had packed more sweaters/long cardigans honestly, but they take so much space out of my suitcase. That’s why I only packed a few. But hey, I was able to create enough cute travel outfits.

Here are two looks following the outfit formula above:

Cute Outfit Ideas for Traveling with a long cardigan

Best sustainable long cardigans and sweaters are from this brand! They are an investment, but so so worth it!

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know how much I love denim jackets!

I only have one and I bring it everywhere with me! Why? Because you can pretty much add it over any look. It’s an easy way to look stylish and well put together. Denim jackets go with everything! I recommend having a medium washed one like this one.

  • Use compressible packing cubes! These are my favorite because they are compressible so they do help you save a ton of space and keep your suitcase organized. This is how I organize them: tops, bottoms, sweaters (if applies), workout clothes, beach stuff, underwear and dresses. These are the ones I have and I love them so much!!! Plus, the company who makes them is owned by other travel bloggers, so we love to support them in any way we can :)
  • Never underestimate the power of an all-black outfit! I made it a point to pack same color tops and bottoms. It doesn’t have to be always black, but black happens to be so easy! I will try a different color for our next adventure so I can share with you more ways on how you can do this too.

Here are a couple of examples with black:

bus trip outfit

  • This one might be obvious, but make sure your top and bottoms have colors in common. For example, I packed 2 black bottoms, so I made sure some of my tops were black or at least had some black. This way you can really maximize what’s in your suitcase by mixing & matching. When you pack a lot of neutrals and just a few prints, it makes it so much easier to put pieces together! Here are some ways I pair my printed bottoms with striped pieces or with a black top. It’s very important to remember to pack prints that work well together with each other.

bus trip outfit

  • Before you put anything in your suitcase, make sure you can style every piece in at least in 3-4 different ways. I like to organize everything in piles and look around at all the other pieces I’m packing to see if they work well together. If I see something I can only style once, then I don’t pack it. This is specially useful with shoes! You’ll be surprised with how much you can edit out of your suitcase by doing this before you put everything in. And you will save so much space!
  • Pick 3 neutral colors. The colors I chose for this Turkey trip were: black, white and dark green. Then you add a couple of denim pieces, prints and cute accessories like headbands, hats and earrings and you can pretty much mix and match all the pieces together!! For my next trip I’m going to try and pick different colors to spice things up a little bit and show you guys, so stay tuned :)

The suit in lovely peach color might not be your first choice when it comes to traveling. However, this blogger shows us how we can rock it! Pair it with sneakers in the same shade, and finish everything off with oversized sunglasses.

Layered Look

Layered Look

Sometimes, the most crucial thing with travel outfits is layering. Many pieces won’t make you feel discomfort. On the contrary, you will have more choice, and the weather shouldn’t surprise you. Don’t forget to wear comfy dad’s sneakers.

Statement Boots

Statement Boots

Snakeskin boots seem like an unusual choice for the airport. However, some girls want to look fashionable wherever they go. Combine high boots with a long coat and an olive green dress. That is how you will be ready for the party, the moment you land.

Fanny Pack and Jeans

Fanny Pack and Jeans

Since they came back to fashion, fanny packs, as well as belt bags, became one of the most stylish items among bloggers and It-girls. They are quite practical for traveling since you can always have your items close.

Earth Toned Style

An earth-toned outfit like this is great not only for travel but for everyday summer wear. Stylish khaki cargo pants , a parka, and a basic white tee are great items that make you feel comfortable and look fabulous. Cargo boots will provide your feet with all-day comfort as well.

Matching Sporty Suit

There is nothing more casual than matching the sporty suit. The crop top and sweatpants seem very cozy while also looking stylish. Break the beige color with black-and-white sneakers. This look is perfect for long flights.

  • Basic Tips for Travel Outfits
  • Layer, Layer, Layer

This is the golden rule when it comes to dressing for travel days.

There are so many variables when it comes to the temperature around you, whether you are traveling by car, plane, train or bus.

You need to be able to throw on a vest over your sweatshirt or sweater, or strip a few layers off and still feel modest and covered in a tee shirt or tank top.

Remember this rule when you are checking out our travel outfit ideas below. You can always add another layer!

If you live in or are traveling in an area with a very hot climate, we have “hot weather variations” for most outfits as well!

  • Prepare for easy spill clean up

Travel days are not the time for your dry clean-only top or white pants.

Bring a spot cleaning pen with you and be prepared to dab some on your tee shirt when your kiddo spills their juice or ice cream cone.

Wearing a printed top can actually help hide any spots you might not be able to get out right away.

  • Wear breathable fabrics

This isn’t a must, but if you are more of a warm-blooded person or travel often during the heat of summer it’s worth thinking about.

Cotton is very breathable and ideal for traveling since they help you regulate your temperature better. Bamboo is good too!

Linen is also very breathable, but can wrinkle easily… which brings us to our next point.

  • Avoid fabrics that wrinkle easily

No matter how you choose to travel, most likely it’ll involve longer periods of sitting.

Avoiding materials that you know wrinkle easily (ahem, linen) will keep you looking fresh and put together, no matter your long travel day!

Many of these travel outfit ideas include comfortable shoes from another popular post here on the blog:

The best travel shoes & sandals that are COMFY, but still CUTE!

These are shoes you can wear all day and don’t have to worry about them not lacking the support to keep your body feeling good. A lot of them were recommended by others in the Frump Fighter community!

If you are looking for the best shoes for travel, look no further than this list of comfy, stylish tennis shoes, slip-ons, and sandals that you can wear all day long! #style #fashion #shoes #momstyle

The Best Travel Outfits: How to Look Fashionable Without Compromising Comfort

Travel in style & comfort.

In case you missed it, our family currently on a cross-country road trip for the summer. My husband told me that we had to pack light and I could only bring one carry-on sized suitcase, a bag, and maybe an extra bag for camera equipment…when I realized I had to pack for 3 months in a tiny suitcase, I got a little worried. But I did it! You can see everything I’ve packed and worn so far in this post . But today’s post is all about the outfits I packed to actually travel in. We’re in the car for anywhere from 2-8 hours at a time… So, being comfortable is non-negotiable for me! But, of course, I still want to look chic and stylish. Don’t we all! Since some of us are getting to start traveling again (even just in the car), I wanted to share some of my most comfortable, travel outfits!

where to stop on a cross-country road trip, best places to stop on a cross country road trip, cross country road trip, west coast to east coast road trip, erin busbee, traveling with kids, how to travel with kids, how to travel with a dog, cross country road trip with kids, leavenworth, washington, free people ruched sleeve shirt, moussy vintage shorts, sam edelman shoes

Travel Outfit Formula & Look #1

The first step to a comfortable travel outfit is a pair of SUPER comfortable bottoms…it can be pants, jeans, shorts, whatever you’re comfortable in. During most of this trip, I’ve been wearing my favorite pair of Moussy denim shorts . The denim isn’t too stiff so they’re comfy, but I still feel put together.

Next, you’ll need a basic top or tee to go with your bottoms. I like something long sleeve because I feel like it’s always cold in the car or airport. In the look above, I’m wearing a ruched sleeve tee by Free People . Next, I’d normally wear one of the jackets I planned to pack for my trip to save space in my suitcase and keep warm in the airport/plane/car too!

Finally, wear comfortable shoes! Whether that’s a cute pair of sneakers or sandals…just make sure you can wear them all day without your feet hurting. I’m wearing an old pair of Sam Edelman sandals that are unfortunately sold out. But I linked some other great options ! In this picture, I’m traveling to a warm climate, but for most trips, I’d probably wear my Golden Goose sneakers . If you missed my review on those, you can check it out here . I talk all about break-in time, sizing, and more in that post!

PACKING TIP: Remember your shoes need to be easy to get on and off for security (if flying), VERY comfortable for walking long distances, and a pair that works well with the mini-wardrobe you already packed.

Travel Outfit #2

This next look is following the same guidelines but going a little more casual. I wore this during a 7-hour drive and it felt like I was wearing pajamas! The top and bottoms are both from Intermix. They’re a cotton and silk fabric that just feels amazing. Under the sweater, I’m wearing an A.L.C. crop top that’s also very comfortable. You don’t have to wear a bra with this crop top…yay! On my feet, I’m wearing the same sandals from the first look.

Travel Outfit #3

This look is very similar to the first. I’m wearing the same denim shorts and sandals. But my top is a balloon sleeve tee by Nation LTD . I have this tee in black and white and it’s such a good elevated basic! The first day we traveled, I wore the white one. We stopped at the First in Flight Museum the day I wore this so it was the perfect transition outfit from car to activities.

Travel Outfit #4

Are you seeing the pattern here? These denim shorts are a very heavy hitter in my wardrobe! For our drive from Missoula to Yellowstone, I wore them with a white ruffle sleeve tee by Nation LTD .

Travel Outfit #5

If you want to see an easy travel look that doesn’t involve shorts…this one is for you! These jeans by Moussy are some of my favorites and super comfy! The top by 9seed is super lightweight and cool. I also love the color and shorter balloon sleeves. I took this top to Mexico too…you can find everything I packed for that trip in this post if you’re interested. Since we were only in the car for a few hours on this travel day and I knew we’d be stopping somewhere good for lunch, I decided to wear my new See by Chloe espadrille wedges . Even with the heel, they’re still very comfortable!

Travel Outfit #6)

This travel look doesn’t go with the outfit formula exactly but it’s SO good I had to share. This Sundry tank dress is super comfortable, a great length, has pockets, and the fabric is so soft and stretchy. I styled it a few ways in this video , it’s a must-watch if you love wearing dresses during the summer! One thing about this dress is that you  do  have to wear a racerback bra . If you wear a regular bra, it will show.

Travel Outfit #6

This is an older travel outfit from a few years ago but I thought it was worth sharing! These exact  cropped culottes  by Michael Stars are sold out but Michael Stars makes so many pieces that are LEGIT comfy that I had to share! These are similar. What I love about comfy pants like these are the wide legs and elastic waist…exactly what you want in a comfy pair of pants. I threw on a soft  long sleeve tee . It’s by Bobi and a great wardrobe basic if you need a black tee. I’m wearing a pair of block heel sandals that are sold out but you could easily wear of pair of cute flat sandals too.

Suitcases & Bags

Quick note, I wanted to share my favorite suitcases and bags. I have the gorgeous Calpak marble suitcase above in the white and black version. If you don’t already have a nice suitcase, this  Calpak suitcases are SO good! They are stylish and durable and super easy to spot on the baggage belt. I also have the carry-on version in gray and black marble. You can see the black version in  this post .

My go-to bag for travel is the Think Royln wingman bag (on the right). It’s a perfect size, can fit SO much, and it’s stylish! Shop more Think Royln bags here .

Thanks so much for your content, videos and posts. I really enjoy them. You keep it real. question about your 12 days giveaway — does it reset itself each day? I have gone back in on consecutive days and it says I have not entered. So i enter again. Same thing happens the next day. Just wondering, in case it is happening to others too.

thanks again. Amy

Erin….this is a lovely outfit…however, I have found that widelegged anything can be subject to hitting a public restroom as you pull it down….I have found more snugged legged pants always do better when traveling. Also the shoes are gorgeous but one needs socks or stockings to avoid putting bare feet on airport floors.. The outfit IS beautiful, I am saying I do not think it is practical for traveling.

Hi Erin , i doN’t haVe an instagram accoUnt. Does that mean i cant enter for the giveaways ? Thank you , Angie Plain city, ohio P.s. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS AND INSPIRATION COMING FROM A 48 year old Hairdresser????

What to Pack for Trips to Scotland

Table Of Contents

When you are planning your trip to Scotland, keep in mind that Scottish weather is very unpredictable. There can be rain, wind, and sunshine in the same trip.

No matter which time of year you travel, the main thing to remember is to always pack layers, including a raincoat, hoodie, and umbrella.

The Sorel Out N About Waterproof Sneaker are perfect for Scotland’s finicky weather and terrain. I’d say the gray ones would be good but leggings are really out of style and I’d rather show a more realistic outfit. You’ll need to create the link for it.

What do people wear in Scotland?

Scotland’s bigger cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh aren’t considered major fashion capitals, and people don’t care much about what you wear. However, you can spot a lot of fashionistas around these cities.

Most of the time, tourists who plan to come to Scotland don’t spend much time in town, but rather exploring the great outdoors: the famous Highlands, lakes ( lochs in Gaelic), the islands, and the beautiful castles and ruins all around the countryside.

The rain and wind can sometimes be strong;  the number one rule is to take an umbrella with you every time you go out.

Always, always, always check the weather forecast before your trip. Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a travel capsule wardrobe , which should easily fit in a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

We don’t really get a proper summer in Scotland; it’s more like a warmer spring, or a bridge between spring and autumn that we call June and July.

Summer days can reach temperatures of 25°C / 77°F. Remember that rain is just around the corner, so don’t let it find you unprepared! Carry an umbrella and waterproof jacket everywhere you go !

It can go from 5° to -5°C / 41° to 23°F during the day. The rain will pour and it can snow a lot in Edinburgh and outside Glasgow. But the feeling you have when you are out and about in these two cities will cheer you up, as they are fascinating.

The “Golden Z” is three streets: Buchanan Street, Sauchiehall Street, and Argyle Street, all in the city center, making the shape of the letter “Z”. These host the most shopping traffic.

With five shopping galleries in the city center, you are spoiled for choice! Forever21 recently opened its second biggest store in Europe and its biggest in the UK in the new shopping center called Buchanan Quarters, situated on Buchanan Street.

Edinburgh is no less impressive for shopping! The big shops on Princes Street are there to cheer you up on cloudy, rainy days.

George Street offers a stylish mix of clothing, accessories, and local souvenir shops. Multrees Walk is at the end of George Street and it has luxury shops like Louis Vuitton and Harvey Nichols. Princes Mall and St James Centre house urban and youthful clothing and a variety of fast food restaurants and cafes for when you get hungry!

Popular department store John Lewis is also found in both cities, which features brands like DKNY, French Connection, Mango, and Oasis. Needless to say, you should be able to find anything you need in these cities!

Tip: Worried about theft, add items like a money belt to your packing list.

What are the best accommodations in Scotland?

We love Airbnb for accommodation in Scotland. Sign up here for a free $40 credit!

I prefer to book “the entire home” instead of opting for shared accommodation on Airbnb. Aside from safety, I also like to feel like I’m living in the destination. It’s a small taste of local life plus you get more amenities than you would at a hotel such as a kitchen and washing machine.

Read these Airbnb tips for more info!

If you prefer the convenience and comfort of a hotel room, I like using both Agoda.com and Hotels.com . Tip: Hotels.com gives you a free night for every ten nights you book!

For hostels, we recommend Hostelworld and Hostelbookers . Always read the reviews before booking to get the best idea if the hostel is right for you. Some are quiet and family friendly while others are known for their party atmosphere.

Not sure about staying at a hostel? Read this.

FINAL TIP: Don’t be afraid of our gray and rainy weather! To stand out against the gray buildings and streets, wear colorful items and accessories–they will make your day brighter.

What are your tips on what to pack for trips to Scotland?

Please note: Most of Europe’s budget airlines have this carryon bag allowance: 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. Always check your airlines’ individual baggage rules and regulations in advance.

Your Spring UK packing suggestions truly made my London/Scotland adventure a breeze. I was ready for any weather situation and could enjoy the packed itinerary!

Stephanie Edgar

This will be so helpful for my upcoming trip to the UK!

Sonya Stacey

Thanks so much for this! I keep coming back to this list as my bible for our trip to Scotland this winter. And convincing my family that they should only take a capsule wardrobe, not every favourite piece in their wardrobe. Thanks also for the rich information and guidance across the site.

Tracy

I just went to Scotland in early August and used the packing guide extensively since I wanted to do 10 days and carryon only. Turns out that we had unprecedented weather and I didn’t need the rain jacket but it was necessary for the wind! Also brought a puffer jacket which was key for a few nights in Edinburgh. Thanks again for all the helpful tips.

Megan Lagrou

Thank you so much! My family of 5 just returned from our 1st carry on only trip which included a week in Scotland. I couldn’t believe we could travel so lightly and be so prepared for the Scotland weather, which ranged from warm to cold and misty. We all followed your above packing list and your recommendation were perfect. I am a total T FG convert!!

Nicki Murgatroy

My girlfriend and I, along with our spouses, will traveling to Scotland in Oct 2022, to celebrate our 50th birthdays this year! Your site has been extremely helpful!

Carolyn

Planning a long-delayed Scotland trip this fall, and I’ve returned to this post several times over for guidance and inspiration — living in the American southwest, I’m so out of touch with the climate there. Haha. So thank you!!

Anita G

Scotland is on my bucket list and I hope when I am able to go, I am prepared thanks to this blog. Been a follower since 2012.

Lori

Is it the same for London?

Alex

Hi Lori, have a look at this guide for tips to help you pack for London: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-pack-for-london-on-your-trip-to-the-united-kingdom/

Have a brilliant time on your travels!

Traveling to UK (London and Scotland in Sept) and this is so helpful!! I just hope the rain holds off!Thank you!!

Meg

This was super helpful for my recent trip. Forget the umbrella, just light drizzle that will go right up under the umbrella. Rain coat and waterproof boots will be your best friends!

Chloe

Your guide helped me so much with my few trips to scotland at various times if the year!

Eliza Hokanson

I spent two weeks in Scotland in July and my favorite “hack” for shopping for a great quality Scottish wool sweater was to stop in at Armstrong’s vintage on argyle street- I spent 30 pounds and got a keepsake I’ll keep forever, for about a quarter of the price of a decent new one. I was also thrilled that my blundstone boots worked well for hiking and were in fact better than my friends’ hiking shoes when there was a sudden downpour!

Malissa

Love it! That’s my game plan, I hope to find the place you mentioned and luck out as well!

Ellen

This has been so helpful! I live in Florida so I am looking forward to cute styles for cooler weather <3

Hi Ellen, thank you for your comment, so pleased you found the post helpful!! Have an awesome trip to Scotland! 🙂

Julie Craft

Coming in August, so that is considered fall w cooler weather? Great tips for a first timer over there, this is my new bible! Thanks you!

Hi Julie, thank you so much for your lovely comment, so glad you enjoyed the article! 🙂

Renni

I followed the guide in this post combining with maximista packing list for my study abroad preparation in Edinburgh. The result: absolutely amazing!! I had lighter luggage than most of the students did, but the downside is i can’t find any reason to buy new clothes since there are many styles to mix and match even after a whole month being here! 😀 thanks travelfashiongirl for keeping my shopping budget under control, haha!

My husband and I are travelling to Edinburgh, Scotland over the Christmas Holidays thru New Years Day. I am looking for ideas on what to pack/wear – All of the comments submitted are helpful, however I keep reading that Spring is the best time to travel to Scotland, but with that being said, we are soooo excited to be in Scotland over the holidays and to perhaps ring in the New Year in a castle :))) Thank you for your help!

Kim Lannette Doninger

I’ve only lived in Edinburgh through one December, but I found it not near as wet as its reputation. Quite often drizzly, but no major showers. What did catch me off guard was the wind. And of course, wind makes umbrellas almost useless, so I never used one. The nightlife in Edinburgh in December is absolutely wonderful! Theatres, concerts, restaurants, pubs, and the Christmas Market! You will definitely want to bring something a bit dressier than your day clothes to take full advantage. I do agree, layering is essential.

Jean

I toured Scotland the last week of May and early June 2017. I’m from Seattle so layering is second nature and i packed accordingly. Weather was mid to high 80s F when we arrived ! I only had three short sleeved tops and never needed the sweater i packed for the ferry to the islands. I think the packing lists are good suggestions but you never know. I was “forced” to shop in Edinburgh.

Jeanne

This post is so helpful, I love it!!! <3 Thank you so much

alex

Glad you like it Jeanne!

Bess

I don’t know how updated this post, but I’m going to Glasgow and the region in the beginning of May, and I’m going from Denmark where I still need to wear my winter coat in April. :/ Should I take my winter coat to Scotland too?

Hi Bess, the best advice is to check BBC.com/weather or weather.com for the forecast before your trip. Have fun!

Mary Jane Scott

First trip to Scotland August 2022 found info informative. Thank you MJ

I love this post! I’m heading to Scotland in April for two weeks in April and have been using this to plan my carry on only wardrobe!

alex

That’s awesome Alexa! Happy to help! Safe Travels!

Verónica

Loved this! And considered the not taking the umbrella, but saying yes to the Raincoat! So anxious to be traveling to Scotland, and in general to the UK in April! So everything counts! Thank you! Love your blog!

Thanks for sharing Veronica! Glad you enjoyed it! Enjoy your trip!

Stefanie

As a frequent visitor to Edinburgh, I would suggest bringing along a felted wool beret instead of an umbrella. The winds in this city are pretty strong and an umbrella just doesn’t cut it. Notice all the ones stuck up in the trees! Felted wool is pretty water tight and won’t blow off!

Oh that’s really great advice Stefanie! Thank you for sharing and for reading! Happy travels!

Martha Harvie

Thank you for the advise as we will be there in May.

Perfect, thanks!

Katarzyna

This is super helpful, as I’m heading off to the UK in a few months (England, actually, but far enough north to consider trips to Edinburgh more than London ;)). I’m honestly looking forward to the cool, relatively wet weather *insert cringing people here*, and dreading the oncoming hot summer where I’m staying now. My stay in the UK is going to be long-term though, so I’ll be packing bit more than a simple trip would warrant, if only not to bother with shopping right away. Plus, since I don’t wear dresses or skirts, I’ll be grabbing more pants and warm top layers. Thanks a lot for these concise guides!

Glad you find it helpful! Here are some rainy day outfit tips for you to consider on your stay:

My husband and I are going to Scotland this July 2016…and I”m so worried what to bring..I have read up on what to wear…I”m just afraid that I will bring the wrong clothing..I am hot natured so, I know that with what i am reading pants jeans would be the best route with maybe some short sleeve shirts maybe a light jacket…If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know…

Travel Fashion Girl

Hi Carol 🙂 If you’re hot natured, perhaps layers would be the best way for you to go, as you want to be as comfortable as possible! We also have an article on Scotland in the summer, which may be a bit more useful for you http://bit.ly/1U8Mgle ! Have a fantastic time and don’t panic about your wardrobe!

Thank you for the website it gave me some good ideas!

Yay! Glad you found it useful Carol 🙂

Anna

I have learned several things about pa King for my fa trip to Scotland. I have purchased several of the recommended items aswe. After reading and rereading, I am reading to pack lightly but properly for my 20 day trip! Thank you for some wonderful ideas.

Shay

I’ve traveled to Edinburgh/St Andrews for the past three years from Florida and my must haves are: my beloved ballet flats for sunny days, Frye boots for cold days, cashmere cardi and cashmere scarf for windy days, and a jean jacket and fun umbrella.

Similar to Florida, Scotland can have multiple weather moods in one day so I’m accustomed to being prepared 🙂

Nice! Love that you have an easy, ready-to-go plan 🙂

Lesley

Hi, I have lived in Scotland all my life and we LOVE tourists, especially Americans. So please don’t worry about looking like one! Both Edinburgh and Glasgow are very cosmopolitan cities and have students from all over the world , so you will not stand out as a foreigner .

Here are my comments on these lists :

The packing list for Spring isn’t warm enough. If you are travelling in March / April , you would be better to follow the Autumn list.

And it NEVER snow in Glasgow or Edinburgh in the autumn – the earliest snows are in November or December and it’s just a few flakes , so don’t worry about that .

Winters are not horrible, but they are mild and wet, which can be a shock to travellers from North America, who are used to cold and dry winters in the north and mild in the south .

I can tell that these lists have been written by a man, as the suggested footwear isn’t very practical . You need a comfortable pair of sneakers / trainers / tennis shoes / boots for every season . Heeled boots look very stylish but are not much use for walking miles around a city .

And of course you need a large purse / bag / small day sack to carry with you each day on your adventure .

I hope you have a wonderful time

Hi Lesley, thank you for sharing these awesome tips! I sent you an email, would love to hear more feedback. Hope to hear from you!

Samantha

Lesley, thanks so much for sharing. I’m planning a trip to Scotland for next year, most likely at the end of May/beginning of June, and I’m trying to figure out what I need to take. Your information has helped a lot, but my biggest dilemma is what kind of shoes to take. I have some flat waterproof leather ankle boots that are very comfortable, but I don’t know if they will be too warm at that time of the year? Also, I’m trying to pack light and only take a carry-on, but I’m also planning on doing some hiking. What kind of shoes should I take for hiking in Scotland?

Hi Samantha 🙂 It sounds like it’s gunna be a great trip! Have a look at this guide on packing shoes for some ideas on how to choose the best shoes for travel – http://bit.ly/29lYgfF . This post on Scotland in summer will also give you some better ideas http://bit.ly/2azA0Wr . Have an awesome time!

Ellen Renfrew

Heading to Scotland this Fall. TFG article gives me the guidance I need to help me get ready for this amazing trip. Thanks TFG!

Karen

We were there in early April and I was so glad I had my gloves and ear warmers. My first purchase was a wool scarf and I wore it every day! I was told in Glencoe, by a native: always pack your hiking boots and dancing shoes when visiting Scotland. My other tips are published here: http://www.karentrina.com/2014/04/12-things-people-dont-tell-you-about.html

Good tips! Thanks for sharing 🙂

Lavinia

“WHAT NOT TO WEAR IN SCOTLAND First I must say that is better to avoid items with the Union Jack flag on them. You can wear them around, you will not be punched or insulted, but you can be charged more in local shops and on taxis and you won’t be treated as well from some of the locals too. Wearing an accessory with the Union Jack flag will brand you as tourist and in some situation it doesn’t help!”

Whyy??? I though that tourists are always the most welcome. Economically speaking, they bring foreign money to spend! Being a tourist in a good thing, you are like the best kind of foreigner! This is what I think, though I am not from the UK, but I will visit Scotland soon. I will be a tourist! :))

Oliva

I’m currently in Glasgow. It’s true! The fall begins! Great Post, the tips are good not only for the weather but also for the style. In Glasgow, never leave home without the waterproof shoes and jacket. By the way, a lovelyy city for shopping 🙂

Thanks Olivia, have a great trip!

Caitlyn@ChemGradBoom

So glad that there is a packing list with advice for every season. I am moving to Edinburgh in Jan to start my PhD and am in need of all the advice that I can get about what to pack/bring.

That sounds exciting! Bring the basics and remember that you can buy things there. These posts might also help you: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-to-live-or-work-abroad/

Melinda

Good tips, I am moving to Scotland in the fall. Also good to point out the different carry on restrictions in Europe. Was on my way home after visiting Ireland and the lady pointed it out to me. They also weigh your carry on bag.

What an exciting move! Can’t wait to hear your feedback as a new expat IN Scotland 🙂

Julia

I LOVE the suggested outfits you put together! They would look great in Scotland, the United States, wherever. I’ll have to bookmark this page for when I next go shopping. Thanks for the great post!

Thats great. Thanks!

Jemma

Ugh, in Scotland we don’t have lakes. They are lochs. Not ‘in Gaelic’, just always. The only lake in Scotland is the Lake of Menteith.

Erin

“Spring is the best season to plan trips to Scotland.”

I LOL’d

brianlittle

I agree with you erin,I’ve traveled to scotland, ireland and uk many times and I think having a Smartphone will really make your life easier. You can get public transit directions, look up restaurants, and get other info on the fly. You also won’t look like a tourist with your big map, if that is your concern. Make sure you have an unlocked phone and get a local SIM card. There are many providers like PrePaymania, Worldsim, 0044 which provides Sim Card anywhere in the world. They only charge for shipping. Cheers !

I really need to get an unlocked phone. I haven’t traveled with a phone in 5 years of travel but it seems very convenient especially when it can be linked up with a local number from home making it easy for people to reach you too. Thanks for commenting!
