New architecture tour blooms on campus

May 3, 2022

As warmer weather approaches, McMaster Museum of Art is introducing a new way to explore McMaster University campus! The museum has developed a McMaster University Campus Architecture Tour in response to ongoing requests for information and stories about campus. Expanding on the museum’s digital offerings, the architecture tour is the second in a series of audio tours, the first being the McMaster Campus Sculpture Tour .

Hosted on izi.travel – a storytelling platform for museums and cities, the tour provides historic and present-day information about the history and evolution of McMaster’s campus, and the various styles of architecture found on site. It also includes more modern sites and buildings recently developed on campus as it evolves into the 21st century and addresses changing needs. A range of historic photographs are included, carefully sourced from McMaster University’s digital archives.

Beginning at the Indigenous Circle, the tour visits 11 stops, including: the Indigenous Circle, University Hall, Hamilton Hall, the Refectory/The Phoenix, Wallingford Hall, the Charles E. Burke Science Building, Divinity College, McMaster Museum of Art, L.R. Wilson Hall, and McMaster’s newest building, the Peter George Centre for Living and Learning.

From the gargoyles carved on Hamilton Hall by parliamentary stone carver William Frederik Karel Oosterhoff, to the frieze above the doors of the Burke Science Building depicting scientists, astronomers, and mathematicians – the tour reveals details about campus that could otherwise go unnoticed to the naked eye.

To begin, either visit the link here or download the izi.travel app . You can follow along with the text descriptions, or use headphones to be guided by recorded audio.

McMaster Museum of Art would like to thank Bridget Whittle, Digital Archives Librarian, for their indispensable help in sourcing historic photographs.

Title: Excited state methods for strongly-correlated systems: formulations based on the equation-of-motion approach

Date: Tuesday, May 7, 2023

Time: 10:30 am-11:30 am

Room:  ABB A404

Zoom: Please email [email protected] for details.

Host: Paul Ayers

Abstract : The interaction of matter with light, specifically an electromagnetic field, leads to photochemical and photophysical processes. These processes have far-reaching implications for diverse areas of science, environment, and technology. Using theoretical and computational methods helps understand these processes at an atomistic scale. Nonetheless, achieving accurate descriptions of excited states remains an elusive task for current theoretical methods. Tackling this challenge requires developing new approaches that account for electron correlation, going beyond conventional single Slater-determinant-based wavefunction approximations.

The equation-of-motion (EOM) method originated in materials physics and serves as the foundation for many popular approaches for accurately modelling spectra. I will describe this framework and the excited-state wavefunction approximations that can be formulated within it. This ansatz’s versatility lies in its capacity to be combined with dissimilar wavefunction procedures, from single to multireference approaches. Later I will present different EOM formulations, covering aspects such as killer conditions, excitation operator truncation, and reference state wavefunction models. I will illustrate their effectiveness with results on small molecules. Finally, I will discuss our efforts to combine EOM with the Flexible Ansatz for N-electron Configuration Interaction (FANCI), a novel wavefunction approximation framework developed in our group; this extends FANCI’s applicability to spectroscopic properties.

Background: Breastfeeding has long been associated with numerous benefits for both mothers and infants. While some observational studies have explored the relationship between breastfeeding and mental health outcomes in mothers and children, a systematic review of the available evidence is lacking. The purpose of this study is to systematically evaluate the association between breastfeeding and mental health disorders in mothers and children.

Methods: We systematically searched MEDLINE and EMBASE from inception to June 2, 2023. The inclusion criteria consisted of all studies evaluating links between breastfeeding and development of mental health disorders in children and mothers. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) while grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) was used to assess the certainty of evidence. A random-effects meta-analysis was used if possible, to estimate the odds ratio for the association between breastfeeding and mental health outcomes. The Mantel-Haenszel method was utilised for pooling ORs across studies. Study heterogeneity was assessed using the I 2 statistic.

Results: Our review identified twenty-one original study. Of these, 18 focused on the association between breastfeeding and child health, assessing depressive disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, eating disorders and borderline personality disorder. Three studies evaluated the associations between breastfeeding and maternal mental health disorders. Three studies looking at outcomes in children showed no significant association between breastfeeding and occurrence of schizophrenia later in life (OR 0.98; 95% CI 0.57-1.71; I 2 = 29%). For depressive disorders (5 studies) and anxiety disorders (3 studies), we found conflicting evidence with some studies showing a small protective effect while others found no effect. The GRADE certainty for all these findings was very low due to multiple limitations. Three studies looking at association between breastfeeding and maternal mental health, were too heterogeneous to draw any firm conclusions.

Conclusions: We found limited evidence to support a protective association between breastfeeding and the development of mental health disorders in children later in life. The data regarding the association between breastfeeding and maternal mental health beyond the postnatal period is also limited. The methodological limitations of the published literature prevent definitive conclusions, and further research is needed to better understand the relationship between breastfeeding and mental health in mothers and children.
