Description of this tour

This excursion has been designed to know the work of César Manrique in Lanzarote: Timanfaya National Park, the Farmer's Monument, the Cactus Garden, Cesar Manrique Foundation, Mirador del Río and Jameos del Agua.

"For me it was the most beautiful place on earth and I realized that if they could see the island through my eyes, then they would think the same as I. Since then I set out to show the beauty of Lanzarote to the world." (César Manrique).

We start at the Islet of Hilario in the National Park of Timanfaya, where with 3 experiments you can see the high temperatures that still are recorded in shallow depth due to the geothermal anomalies of the zone. You can see how the heat of the earth is used to cook the food and also enjoy the views from the windows of the restaurant El Diablo, by César Manrique. It will be from the Islet of Hilario, from where we will leave by bus to make the impressive route of the Volcanoes through the most protected area of the national park.

We head to the geographical centre of Lanzarote to make a photographic stop at the Monumento del Campesino, a building of the eighteenth century restored by César Manrique where we can see the elements of traditional architecture. In front of the Monument is the Sculpture to Fertility, 15 meters high, which pays homage to the farmers of Lanzarote.

"Half the beauty depends on the landscape and the other half of the man who looks at it" (Lin Yutanq)

From the Monument, we continue to Tahiche to visit the César Manrique´s Foundation, home of the artist until 1988. Then we continue along the east coast to enjoy the visit of a Cactus Garden, the last work of Manrique where there are more than 1000 specimens, located in the town of Guatiza, famous for the  cultivation of cochineal.

Already in the north, we visit Jameos del Agua, considered the most impressive work of César Manrique.

The excursion ends with a visit to the Mirador del Río from where you can enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramas of La Graciosa and the Chinijo Archipelago, the small islets in the north of Lanzarote.

Who was César Manrique ?

Born in Arrecife in 1919, he was a local hero, a multi-talented artist, sculptor, architect, and environmentalist all rolled into one.

César Manrique wasn’t just about painting on a canvas, far from it. He was on a mission to transform his beloved island into a work of art. He championed sustainable development; his influence is everywhere, from architecture to landscape design.

From barren landscapes and volcanic bubbles, Manrique himself had a vision. He believed that development shouldn’t bulldoze over nature but complement it. He fought against high-rises and instead focused on blending structures with the island’s natural beauty and became Lanzarote’s guardian angel.

Manrique soaked up inspiration for his creativity from his travels to New York City and Paris in the 60s. The surrealism of Salvador Dali, the architecture of Antoni Gaudí, and the avant-garde movements of the mid-20th century all shaped Manrique’s unique vision. The result is a superb blend of art and environment that can be seen in Lanzarote and across the Canary Islands.

The 11 best César Manrique attractions in Lanzarote

#1 cueva de los verdes – open to the public since 1964.

Cueva de los Verdes is a remarkable natural cave system located in Lanzarote. Formed by volcanic activity over 3,000 years ago, the cave system stretches for about 6 kilometres, making it one of the longest volcanic tunnels in the world. The caves were created by lava flows from the nearby La Corona volcano.

Cueva de los Verdes is particularly fascinating because of its intricate formations, including stalactites, stalagmites, and other volcanic features. Guided tours lead visitors through this subterranean wonder, providing insights into the geological history of the island and the unique formations within the cave.

Cueva de los Verdes offers a captivating and educational experience, showcasing the raw beauty of Lanzarote’s volcanic landscape.

#2 Jameos del Agua – open to the public since 1966

Jameos del Agua is a mesmerizing natural wonder turned into a unique cultural and recreational space.

The highlight is an underground lake, home to a rare species of blind albino crabs. Above ground, lush gardens and an ornamental swimming pool seamlessly blend with the volcanic landscape. It’s an oasis of greenery contrasting the stark beauty of the subterranean world.

An auditorium where concerts and performances are held and a restaurant/nightclub are all surrounded by the cave’s natural formations, creating a surreal backdrop.

Why not visit some of the places mentioned in this blog post on a César Manrique  Day Tour ?

#3 Monumento al Campesina – open to the public since 1968

Dedicated to fertility and the island’s farming community, this monument integrates art into everyday life. Steps take you up the 15-metre-high statue for views of the countryside. Adjacent to the statue is La Casa-Museo del Campesino, showcasing life in Lanzarote, from farming to local cuisine.

#4 El Diablo de las Montañas del Fuego – open to the public since 1970

Described in 2023 by National Geographic as one of the most impressive restaurants in the world, El Diablo restaurant, nestled deep in the Timanfaya National Park, is one of César Manrique’s greatest achievements. Creating a circular restaurant with 360-degree views of the volcanic lunar landscape was genius.

Dining at the restaurant is unique as your meat is cooked above the heat generated by Montaña de Timanfaya, Lanzarote’s dormant but not extinct volcano!

#5 Mirador del Rio – open to the public since 1973

Mirador del Río is a breathtaking viewpoint located on the northern cliffs of Lanzarote. This architectural marvel is skillfully integrated into the landscape, enhancing rather than dominating the natural beauty. From Mirador del Río, visitors are treated to panoramic views of the neighbouring island of La Graciosa and the surrounding Atlantic Ocean.

Why not book a tour to see César Manrique’s work in the north of the island ?

#6 Jardin de Cactus – open to the public since 1990

See the final project César Manrique completed before his death. Manrique turned a former quarry into a cactus paradise, showcasing nature’s resilience against the harsh volcanic backdrop.

You can read about the cactus garden in my post – Jardin de Cactus: more than just a prickly pear .

#7 LagOmar : This cave house in the village of Nazaret was once owned by Omar Sharif and lost in a game of cards. Manrique was subsequently involved in the design of the beautiful oasis we see today.

Please read more here about LagOmar Volcanic Cave House Museum .

#8 Volcano House Museum: part of the César Manrique Foundation ; this was the artist’s home for 20 years. Located inside lava tubes in Tahiche, the surreal design of the Volcano House showcases Manrique’s unique style. If you want to get inside a visionary’s head, this is one place you won’t want to miss.

#9 Taro de Tahiche : While not as famous as some of his other projects, this was Manrique’s own residence. The artist transformed this traditional Canarian house into a harmonious blend of art and architecture. He lived here after the Volcano House until he died in 1992.

#10 International Museum of Contemporary Art: Housed in an 18th-century fortress, this museum showcases contemporary art. Manrique’s touch is evident in the museum’s design and overall aesthetic. Inside the museum, a restaurant offers stunning views of Arrecife Bay via the semi-circular glass construction of the building.

#11 Roundabouts: Lanzarote’s many roundabouts feature sculptures and art installations, often in the form of wind toys designed by Manrique.

Final Thoughts

Cesar Manrique’s impact on Lanzarote is immeasurable. His projects seamlessly fuse art, architecture, and nature, creating a harmonious balance that helps the island’s tourism by continually drawing visitors from around the world. His legacy lives on, not just in the landmarks he crafted but in the very spirit of Lanzarote itself.

Read our tips

1. Cactus Garden

what to visit in Lanzarote Attractions - Cactus Garden

One of our favorite Lanzarote attractions is the Cactus Garden. César Manrique has imagined a fascinating transformation of this abandoned quarry. He used the amphitheater to create a botanical garden with 4,500 cacti from all over the world (450 species). It fits perfectly into the shape of the quarry and is dominated by a well-restored windmill. Thanks to the structure, the cacti are protected from the strong winds that sometimes blow over Lanzarote and the plants flourish.

Cactus in bloom

  • Official name – Jardin de Cactus
  • Allow 1h30 to 2 hours
  • Coffee on site
  • Wear comfortable shoes because the ground is cobbled and not always very comfortable.
  • Protect yourself from the sun!
  • Check opening hours and prices here .
  • See more photos in our Cactus Garden article .

2. Jameos del Agua

Jameos del Agua - swimming pool and lava

Located in the north of the island, Jameos del Agua is a unique place where what remains of a volcanic tube has been transformed by César Manrique. 4000 years ago, the La Corona volcano erupted and a 6 km-long lava tube was formed. Over time, certain sections of the tube collapsed, creating openings known as “Jameos”. In the 1960s, 3 of these caves and a section of the remaining tube were completed with gardens, a swimming pool, a museum, an auditorium and a restaurant. There’s also a salt lake with tiny white crabs.

Lake Jameos del Agua

  • Official name – Jameos del Agua
  • Allow 2 hours
  • Sanitary facilities and restaurant on site
  • Wear comfortable shoes
  • Unfortunately, swimming in the magnificent pool is not permitted.
  • Consult opening hours and prices here
  • See more photos in our article Jameos Del Agua Lanzarote.

3. Mirador del Rio

Lanzarote Attractions César Manrique - Mirador del Rio 1

Located on the Risco de Famara, the viewpoint overlooks the island of La Graciosa at an altitude of over 475m. It was a 19th-century military fort. César Manrique transformed it in the 1970s to camouflage it in the rocks and offer incredible views of the cliff, the island and the stretch of sea in between called El Rio. At the foot of the cliffs, you can also see the salt marshes of Salinas del Rio. The interior building, with its white walls and curves, provides a beautiful frame for the magnificent scenery. This is one of Lanzarote’s main attractions.

4. César Manrique Foundation

César Manrique Foundation -

The César Manrique Foundation is headquartered in a home he designed and where he lived for 20 years. It was built in harmony with a lava flow formed during Lanzarote’s famous eruptions between 1730 and 1736.

The rooms are housed in volcanic bubbles and linked by tunnels. Exploring the place is fun, but you’ll feel frustrated again at not being able to swim in the beautiful pool…

At the end, you can enjoy the showroom with paintings and lava entering the window. Allow time to enjoy the garden and its sculptures.

5. Al Campesino

Al Campesino - Monumento a la Fecundidad

Al Campesino was designed by César Manrique as a tribute to the people who work in the fields and the hard work they put into growing crops in these difficult conditions. The buildings resemble traditional houses with white walls and green borders. Inside is a museum where you can find local craftsmen doing traditional work.

But the place is visually iconic thanks to the 15 m-high sculpture, also by César Manrique (1968). It’s called Monumento a la Fecundidad (Monument to Fecundity) and seems to be the center of Lanzarote. We love the contrast of colors with white walls, green plants and wood, dark rocks and blue sky.

6. César Manrique House Museum

Lanzarote Attractions César Manrique - Haria House 1

Located in the northern town of Haria, the house is set in the palm grove. So, if you miss the presence of trees around you, this is a good place to go. César Manrique used to live where the foundation is (#4), but in 1986 he began building a new house on a farm. He lived there until his death in 1992.

Today, it’s a museum where furniture and objects have been preserved as they were. You can also enter his workshop and see how he worked. However, because this place is more about his intimacy and less about his work, it wasn’t our favorite of the Lanzarote Attractions linked to César Manrique.

And the attractions of Lanzarote with Jesus Soto…

On many projects, César Manrique collaborated with another famous artist: Jesus Soto (1923 – 2005).

Born in Venezuela, he arrived in Lanzarote when he was in his early 20s. He was the discreet artist who brought many of Manrique’s concepts and ideas to reality. He was responsible for one of the entrances to Jameos del Agua, spent time finding the right path for the Timanfaya route and took part in Mirador del Rio, Monumento al Compesino and the Cactus Garden.

He is best known for lighting the Green Caves (Cueva de los Verdes).

The CACT tourist center even claims that it was he who asked the political leader to convince César Manrique to return to Lanzarote. However, it is much less well known…

7. Mountains of fire – Restaurant El Diablo

Lanzarote what to visit - Timanfaya restaurant

Inside the magnificent Timanfaya National Park , the only structure is the El Diablo restaurant at the starting point of the bus tour. It was designed in 1970 by César Manrique to offer splendid views of this unique, colorful and surreal volcanic landscape.

Inside, it’s equally fascinating, with a giant grill using the Earth’s natural heat. He also designed the bus route to the park, which was realized by Jésus Soto.

8. LagOmar Museum

LagOmar Museum

LagOmar is one of Lanzarote’s most spectacular private properties. Conceived by César Manrique and designed by Jesus Soto, it was built in a quarry with natural tunnels and caves. It’s a whole labyrinth to explore!

In the 70s, Omar Sharif came to Lanzarote to film “The Mysterious Island” and bought it. In the 90s, it was enhanced by German and Uruguayan architects with flora, reclaimed wood beams and many other materials. Today, it can be visited as a museum.

9. Cueva de los Verdes de Jesus Soto

Cueva de los verdes - lake

In 1965, Jesus Soto was commissioned to light one of the sections of La Corona’s 6 km lava tube. It was to enable cavers to work.

But the artist has done nothing simple. He created a new world by placing the lights precisely to enhance the cave experience. Today, if you’re not claustrophobic, you can enjoy this underground walk with its beautiful colors and rock formations.

At the end, there’s a fantastic surprise, but we won’t spoil it for you. A fascinating Lanzarote attraction.

César Manrique’s impact on Lanzarote

This is one of the main reasons why Lanzarote is one of our favorite Canary Islands. The architecture hasn’t gone crazy and there’s harmony with the terrain. With the exception of Arrecife and one other building, all the houses are white and of limited height. Thanks to its lobbying for tourism development in harmony with nature, strict building regulations have been put in place and all the towns have retained much of their charm.

César Manrique Tour Itinerary

Having picked you up from the area closest to your hotel in Lanzarote at the designated time, we'll make our way to Mozaga , located in the centre of the island.

In this village, we'll see the first of César Manrique's works on this tour dedicated to the legacy he left on the island. We'll take in the "Monumento al Campesino" (Monument to the Peasant), a homage to rural life. Inside, we'll appreciate the various tools used in local agriculture, then continue, passing through Teguise and continuing to Haria , where we'll stop to admire the natural beauty of the  Valle de las Mil Palmeras (Thousand Palm Valley). Then, we'll make our way to the northwestern part of the island.

Our next stop is at the El Rio Viewpoint , designed by César Manrique. Its viewing galleries and panoramic terraces allow spectacular views of La Graciosa island, the largest in the Chinijo archipelago. At 2 pm, we'll make a stop in the North of Lanzarote, where you'll be free to have lunch at your own pace and enjoy the delicious Canarian food.

After lunch, we'll head towards the Jameos del Agua, one of the most magical places on the island. This area of the island serves as a habitat for an endemic species : tiny blind and albino crabs. In addition, inside the Jameos del Agua, you can also visit some of the works designed by César Manrique: an auditorium, a swimming pool, a restaurant, and gardens.

Then, we'll head to Tahíche to see the  César Manrique Foundation . Here, we can visit the Volcano House , where the artist himself lived. It's a unique space with swimming pools, gardens, and even a dancefloor!

8 Best Cesar Manrique Lanzarote Sites for Art Lovers

Located off the coast of Africa, Lanzarote is a picturesque archipelago known for its volcanic landscapes, pristine beaches, and unique cultural heritage. However, if you’re looking for something truly exceptional, you won’t want to miss the artistic legacy of Cesar Manrique.

The renowned painter, sculptor, and architect was one of the most influential figures in Lanzarote’s history, shaping its landscape and culture in ways that are still evident today. In this article, we’ll take you through the best Cesar Manrique Lanzarote sites, from stunning viewpoints to breathtaking restaurants and houses.

Who Was Cesar Manrique?

Cesar Manrique was a visionary architect , sculptor, and artist born in 1919 who left an indelible mark on the world of modern art. Born in 1919 in Arrecife , Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, his work ranged from large-scale murals to striking environmental sculptures, and graced many exhibit halls and public spaces around the world.

Despite his death in a tragic car accident in 1992, Manrique left behind a legacy that continues to inspire artists and creators to this day. His work was characterized by his deep respect for nature and his ability to merge traditional elements with contemporary design.

Although Manrique achieved great success in New York, his heart remained in his beloved Lanzarote. The island was his muse, and his commitment to preserving its beauty has left an indelible mark on its landscape. Manrique’s influence is felt far beyond the shores of Lanzarote and he has had a profound impact on the world of modern art and architecture.

What Was Cesar Manrique’s Influence on Lanzarote?

Cesar Manrique’s influence on Lanzarote cannot be overstated. As a native of the island, he understood the delicate balance between preserving its beauty and supporting its economy.

In the face of mass tourism, Manrique championed a more sustainable approach. He believed that visitors should not only enjoy the island’s pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, but also appreciate its unique culture and environment.

Manrique accomplished this through his artistic creations that integrated seamlessly with the natural landscape, such as the wind toys that can be seen throughout the island. His legacy is evident today, as many of his works have become iconic landmarks and continue to draw visitors from around the world.

One of the most iconic Manrique creations, the Jameos del Agua Caves are a series of interconnected lava tubes that have been turned into a stunning underground oasis. With a beautiful pool, lush greenery, and even a concert hall, this is a must-visit site for any Lanzarote traveler.

This unique attraction is home to an underground lake, where visitors can spot albino crabs – found only on the island of Lanzarote. The overall effect is one of breath-taking beauty, with the palm trees providing natural shading and a sense of serenity.

It’s no wonder that Jameos del Agua is considered one of the best places to visit in Lanzarote. Manrique’s signature style of integrating natural elements into his art and architecture is on full display here, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the island’s elegance and charm.

2. Fundación César Manrique

Once the artist’s personal residence and studio, this stunning house in Tahiche is now a museum that showcases his signature style and creativity. With its commanding white-washed walls, natural stone accents, and open spaces, the César Manrique Foundation is a testament to Manrique’s ability to blend modernist architecture with the island’s traditional charm.

The sleek, clean lines of the building’s exterior are juxtaposed beautifully against the volcanic ash garden with tropical plants and sparkling blue pool. The Taro de Tahiche , as Manrique named the house, is a testament to the man himself, who sought to marry the natural world with the man-made, seamlessly weaving the two together to create a harmonious whole.

Built on a petrified lava field, a visit to this magnificent estate is a unique experience for anyone with an appreciation for art, architecture, and the beauty that can arise when they are brought together in perfect harmony.

This spectacular house boasts a series of interconnected caverns, courtyards, and terraces that blend harmoniously with the surrounding topography. The crowning jewel of the estate is the alluring swimming pool, which shimmers like a turquoise jewel under the eternal sunshine of the Canarian sky.

You can’t unfortunately swim in any of the Cesar Manrique pools in Lanzarote. However, if you stay at the Finca de Arrieta Eco Retreat , they have a gorgeous pool for guests, inspired by the man himself.

The building, which was originally a collection of five separate traditional farmhouses, was painstakingly restored by Manrique himself, with every detail lovingly designed to fuse the local volcanic rock with modern minimalist aesthetic. The result is a testament to the mastery of a man who dedicated his life to protecting the natural beauty of his beloved Lanzarote, and to inspiring others to do the same.

Palm grove House.

César manrique house museum. haría.

The César Manrique House Museum is located in a handsome palm grove in the picturesque village of Haria, which still conserves many of Lanzarote’s traditions. In Haría, the artist found the quietude and harmony with nature that he had always pursued.

In early 1986, he began to build his new home, re-using and adapting a run-down farmhouse sited on farmland he had purchased in the nineteen seventies. Manrique revisited the language of traditional architecture with a modern vision governed by aesthetics and comfort. He lived here until his death in 1992. In 2013 the house was opened to the public as a home and museum. Visitors are afforded a view of the rooms and the studio where the painter worked and lived during the last few years of his life.

Two courtyards introduce the visitor to a surprising world of personal belongings, utensils, objects found by chance and handcrafted accessories that Manrique turned to an aesthetic purpose. This is a space characterised by noble materials and good taste. The exuberant indoor and outdoor plant life creates serene and inviting atmospheres. The studio is in a separate building where the artist painted daily, surrounded by oils, tables laden with drawings, easels and unfinished paintings. It has been conserved just as he left it when he died.

Visitors embark on a unique experience in the calm of a natural environment, a truly singular world that portrays Lanzarote’s great artist at his most personal.

What to see at the César Manrique House Museum

Popularly known as the  Palm Grove House , the César Manrique House Museum pays homage to traditional Canarian architecture in perfect integratation with nature. The artist bought the run-down farmhouse in the 1970s, and converted it into a beautiful, comfortable home where he spent his final years.

Visitors are immersed in the life and works of César Manrique as they explore the different rooms of the house-museum. The tour includes the artist's bedroom, kitchen and other living spaces and his studio , preserved as he left it with tables laden with oils, drawings and unfinished paintings .

A highly recommended visit

The  César Manrique House Museum  tells the story of its creator and his irrevocable link to the history and geography of Lanzarote , helping visitors fall in love with the island. The artist's home in Haría provides a contrast to his previous house in Tahíche, now the headquarters of the César Manrique Foundation , and the two visit complement each other perfectly.

If you don't have much time to spare in Lanzarote and have to choose between the two, we'd recommend visiting the César Manrique Foundation. However, if you're lucky enough to visit both, you'll enjoy a discount when buying the two entrance tickets together .

César Manrique's house

Most of the furniture and things that César Manrique used during his work as an artist are exactly as he had left them on the day of his death on September 25, 1992. The whole property – house, the atelier and the garden, separated from it, convey a particularly quiet and cosy atmosphere.
