Carly Rae Jepson (born November 21, 1985) is a Canadian pop singer-songwriter, best known for her 2013 smash hit single “Call Me Maybe”, hailing from Mission, British Columbia, Canada.

The singer-songwriter Carly Rae Jepson made her first impression on the music industry competing in season five of “Canadian Idol” in 2007. Winning the hearts of judges and fans alike, Jepson placed third in the competition and subsequently embarked on the Canadian Idol Top 3 concert tour. Following the tour’s completion the singer returned to British Columbia to focus her energy on songwriting, recording and finding a backing band. Successful demos led to Jepson inking a deal with Simkin Artist Management and Dexter Entertainment, and the independent label MapleMusic Recordings.

After a move to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the singer released her debut single, the John Denver cover, “Sunshine on My Shoulder”, in June 2008. Subsequent singles “Bucket” and “Heavy Lifting” were issued on to her MySpace page ahead of the September 2008 release of her debut full-length “Tug of War”. In support of the album Jepson toured western Canada alongside Marianas Trench and Shiloh in early 2009, followed by a national tour with The New Cities and Mission District.

By this point Jepson’s appeal was growing and manager Jonathan Simkin signed her to his own label, 604 Records. Aided by Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez’s liberal tweeting about Jepson’s music after they heard it on the radio, the singer's international recognition skyrocketed. Jepson later signed with Bieber’s manager’s label School Boy Records along with Interscope Records, allowing for international distribution, and issued the EP “Curiosity” in 2012. Included on the EP was the smash hit “Call Me Maybe”, which topped the charts in over 15 countries, including in Canada where she became the first Canadian act to do so since Bieber and his song "Baby" in 2010.

The singer subsequently made her U.S. television debut on “The Ellen DeGeneras Show” before releasing her second full-length album “Kiss” in September 2012. Spawning the singles “Good Time”, “The Kiss”, and “Tonight I’m Getting Over You”, the album won two Juno Awards for Best Album of the Year and Best Pop Album of the Year. Following the release Jepson accompanied Justin Bieber on his Believe Tour before making her debut headlining tour, The Summer Kiss Tour, in 2013.

Live reviews

Carly Rae Jepsen writes and sings ‘pop star’ songs, but she couldn’t be more different than Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, or Taylor Swift on stage. Backed by a (more than competent) 4-piece band, she wore a blouse, denim cut-offs, leggings, and patent leather boots, while her black hair framed her face in a long pixie cut. I only mention her appearance because it did nothing to distract from the performance. Carly’s clothes and style are not a prop. She’s the girl next door…if the girl who lives next door has a voice that can reach the rafters. Simple lighting bathed her in rotating neon hues that favored pink and blue, while a simple diamond acted as the backdrop. Unlike so many big-budget pop shows, the focus was on the music. And the music held its own. The set opened, as the album does, with “Run Away with Me”, before the keyboardist put the sax away until the end. The Gothic has one of the best sound systems of any medium-sized venue in Colorado, so Carly’s vocals came through perfect in the mix. The ice in my drink rattled as bass reverberated through the venue during club bangers like “I Didn’t Just Come Hear to Dance”. And every chord was crisp during the acoustic rendition of “Curiosity”. Carly worked the crowd as well; touching those who begged to be touched, while journeying into the audience as far as she could without risking being mauled by rabid fans. - See more at: http://ilistensoyoudonthaveto.com/2016/03/06/carly-rae-jepsen-gothic-theatre-03-05-16/#sthash.wcpJ5hU0.dpuf

I've been a Carly Rae Jepsen fan ever since the spring of 2012 when her song Call Me Maybe got popular on YouTube and so did the music video.

I've been listening to her music ever since then but I didn't get a chance to meet Carly in person until January 2016 when she made an appearance Kelly Ripa's talk show on ABC for a television interview about the movie Grease Live (which she was what she was promoting at the time).

Fast forward to two years and 6 months later last month this past July, I got another opportunity to see Carly Rae Jepsen again but it was for this concert at Damrosch Park in Manhattan that just happened last night and it was INCREDIBLE !! I've seen Carly Rae Jepsen perform her music before at a concert but that was only on TV or on the internet, yesterday was my first time seeing her live and in person and she didn't disappoint. She performed three of my favorite songs that came out recently like "Run Away With Me" "I Really Like You" and "Cut To The Feeling" and I already loved these songs when I first heard the studio versions of them but they were much better in person because they were all played on an acoustic guitar which is the only difference between that and studio recordings but nevertheless, I enjoyed the experience. I highly recommend this for fellow Carly Rae Jepsen fans who don't like the chance to see her sing live in person like I did. And to Carly Rae Jepsen herself you probably won't ever read this but if do ... THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!

‘Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy, but here’s my number, call me maybe.’ Anyone who left the house in 2012 couldn’t have missed this chorus. Every mainstream radio station and nightclub in the land was blasting Carly Rae Jepsen’s pop hit. The song was nominated for two Grammy Awards and became the first official number one of the Official Streaming Chart. But what is it like seeing a one hit wonder in concert?

Well actually, Carly Rae Jepson has released two studio albums and an EP, and so has plenty of material to fill a gig. The Canadian is famed for her teen pop and dance pop style. However, she actually has a history as an acoustic singer-songwriter and cites Van Morrison as one of her influences. So Carly Rae Jepsen injects variation into her sets. Nor is ‘Call Me Maybe’ her only pop tune. The songstress gives polished performances of dance tracks like ‘Tonight I’m Getting Over You.’ The heavy club beat soon gets the whole crowd jumping.

Of course, the highlight of any Carly Rae Jepsen set is the much-awaited ‘Call Me Maybe.’ Like any experienced performer, she saves the popular until last. When the familiar intro finally kicks in the crowd goes wild. Everyone lets loose and dances to the cheesey lyrics like no one is watching.

I really really really really really really like Carly Rae Jepsen's live show. During a time when American teen stars seem to be arriving daily with new takes on the pop genre, Carly manages to stand apart mainly through the strength of her personality. Although Ariana Grande and Demi Levato may be able to vocally outdo Jepsen, their live shows are considered to be rather robotic having pushed the choreography too far and applied just one too many coats of shimmering gloss.

Whereas although Carly's show is considered and does feature the likes of lush stage decoration and dance routines, but strip that all away and you find a singer who is simply enjoying entertaining her fanbase. The crowds respond well to the personable way in which she interacts with them, chatting on a one to one basis with certain members and making sure they are all in high spirits before unleashing favourites including 'Tonight I’m Getting Over You' as well as mega-hit 'Call Me Maybe' which is sang along at levels that could break noise pollution barriers.

she was dope af like bruhhh omg. her live is wayy better than the digital or vinyl album which is saying a lott for a popstar ya feel me. i did the meet and greet thing she was an adorable lil mf. super sweet to her fans but wasnt a fake hoe namsain. just like straight up responses i can fuck with that. i mean even the picture i took with her was like ye man this is how celebs are spost 2 act ya feel me no bs just like fans and artist fuckn with eachother. and like the crowd in pvd was pre trash for the most part (except for some dope niggas and hoes ok) and she still rocked it like fuckkk bruh shit was so unreal idek how she did it. and like a tiny ass venue too usually popstars like her need a bigass stadium and shit to get the crowd rockin but nahh man she was just like yo imma still fuck it up. interacted with the crowd too for the most part which was chill like i was fuckn with it. so yeah i mean crj bruh best ever goddamn

This kind of was a whim purchase for me. I had been hearing this hype about her recent album for months and when I did take a listen I understood. I also had no idea this concert would be around 4 hours. We waited in line at Wonder Ballroom for 20 minutes, and the opening acts took around an hour and a half. The opening acts were not the greatest, one of them was pretty aggressively trying to be obnoxiously edgy. However, at around 9:20 Carly came on and the real show started. Her vocals were fantastic and she essentially sang every song from her album and quite a handful from her old album.

Second time seeing her and she keeps knocking it out of the park (but are you even surprised?). I really enjoyed the venue at Humphreys as the weather was perfect and I didn't have to deal with all of the heat/crowds/smoke of indoor venues. CRJ played almost all of the Dedicated album (maybe with the exception of 2-3 songs), and played some iconic tracks from Emotion and even Emotion Side B. What's a CRJ concert without her summoning up the strength to perform Call Me Maybe and Store? She had great energy, sounded fantastic, and gave us some costume changes.

Went to her Charlotte show, and it was phenomenal! She was a lot shorter than I expected (lol) but she had such a strong and powerful singing voice, and man, she can sing! I would HIGHLY recommend getting the VIP ticket — it's pretty cheap, and you get to meet the wonderful person that is CRJ. She is so friendly and lovely, she takes pictures with and signs stuff for fans, and she's a very down-to-earth person who's amazing to talk to (she swears a lot too). Really good atmosphere, really great performance, and just a fantastic experience in general.

Carly Rae is a charismatic, talented, sexy, sweet, smart QUEEN! She was so good at interacting with the crowd, and you could tell she was feeding off everyone's energy and giving it back. The setlist was perfect, and she transitioned between songs with cute lines like, "It's okay when you have Boy Problems, because you can just have a Party for One!" Her outfits were awesome; she interacted so nicely with her band, and the confetti at the end ruled.

When I went to her concert in Anaheim, she gave it her all making it the best night of my life...it is so fun to be there. If you listened to her latest album and loved it and/or are familiar with her big hits, then you should definitely go because it will be a lot of fun. To be honest, I wish I could revisit that experience right now...so go.

Carly Jepsen Concert Review: 'Run Away With Her' as the ‘So Nice’ Tour Lands in Boston

Carly Rae Jepsen performs at Roadrunner.

As a veteran of the pop industry, Carly Rae Jepsen knows how to reinvent herself. She found an acoustic folk debut in 2008’s “Tug of War” before she was more broadly introduced to audiences through her Grammy-nominated record “Kiss” — the album produced some of her most commercially successful singles like “Call Me Maybe” and “Good Time” with Owl City. Since her breakout success in 2012, Jepsen has shed the mainstream and found herself a darling of the indie-pop scene with the synth-pop and disco-inspired musings on her third and fourth albums, “Emotion” in 2015 and “Dedicated” in 2019.

Jepsen has dipped her toe into every genre; based on its available singles, “The Loneliest Time” looks to culminate every facet of a fifteen-year career. “Western Wind” is an instrumental dream, an earthy blend of piano and synths punctuated by gentle percussion. “Beach House” is a fun tongue-in-cheek and somewhat satirical ode to the struggles of modern dating, and “Talking to Yourself” is reminiscent of the bold sensuality of previous songs like “Stay Away” and “L.A. Hallucinations.” With an assist from Empress Of, Jepsen has embarked on the “So Nice” North American and European tour in support of “The Loneliest Time,” and stopped by Boston’s Roadrunner on Sept. 26.

A swath of red light bathed the stage and crowd, framing Jepsen’s silhouette and setting the tone for her setlist; passionate, energetic, fiery.

A swath of red light bathed the stage and crowd, framing Jepsen’s silhouette and setting the tone for her setlist; passionate, energetic, fiery. From the literally star-studded staging to an anthropomorphic moon (voiced by Jepsen) that guided the audience through concert transitions to the opening lines of “This Love Isn’t Crazy” (“For some time, I’ve been waiting for your star to shine”), Jepsen’s performance was thematically celestial and ultimately otherworldly. Decked in a cloudy blue and white ensemble, she soared through the first act of her set.

The lesser-known selections like “Let’s Sort the Whole Thing Out” and “Window” were unencumbered by their relative obscurity as Jepsen’s innate theatricality brought her performance to new heights. Crowd favorites like “Run Away With Me” and “Emotion” were infused with an effortless effervescence, and though she’s certainly grown exponentially in the indie sphere, Jepsen didn’t shy away from her mainstream hits. “Call Me Maybe” and “I Really Like You” were delivered without any hint of self-deprecation but rather with a demonstrable giddiness and sincerity on par with the rest of her set.

With a 27-song setlist, Jepsen’s stamina was commendable. In leaping across the stage, trekking up flights of stairs to engage with the members of her band, and coordinating dances with backup vocalists Sophi Bairley and Julia Ross, the singer kept the energy up throughout her entire performance. With little room between songs and costume changes, Jepsen, with assistance from Bairley and Ross, made sure to engage with the crowd during her songs, casting her mic out and soliciting backing vocals from her audience.

Not to be outdone, Jepsen’s instrumentalists and backup vocalists also shine. Performances of “Run Away With Me” and “I Want You In My Room” were elevated by exceptional saxophone accompaniment from Jared Manierka, while the bridge on “Beach House” featured vocals from Manierka, along with tour guitarist Tavish Crowe, drummer Nik Pesut, and bassist Abe Nouri. Though these and other band interactions are campy and sometimes over-the-top, they are by no means ingenuine. Jepsen had effortless chemistry with every person on stage, some of whom have been performing with her for over a decade.

With an assist from Empress Of, Jepsen has embarked on the “So Nice” North American and European tour in support of “The Loneliest Time.”

By the time Jepsen is closing out the show with another crowd-favorite, 2017’s “Cut to the Feeling,” now dressed in a black ethereally draped number, it’s abundantly clear to her audience why she’s been able to sustain such a lengthy career. Reinvention, be it from year to year or from song to song, is at the heart of her discography and performance. During the show, Jepsen has been able to easily acquaint her audience with newer music while refreshing older selections with her signature vitality. With an impressively diverse repertoire that blends lyrical depth with delightful instrumentation and production and her expertise as a performer, Carly Rae Jepsen is a joy to watch.

See Carly Rae Jepsen on her ongoing tour , and listen to her new album “The Loneliest Time” on Oct. 21.

Noah Cyrus, Miley Cyrus ' sister, will be the tour's first opener, displaying her own brand of unique emotional impact. Megan James and Corin Roddick are Purity Ring, coming onboard for November shows through year's end with their captivating electronic beats, currently on display in the tracks they produced on Perry's Witness album.

Jepsen's "Cut To The Feeling" — rated the best song of 2017 so far by Spin — revisits the pop urgency that led her to two GRAMMY nominations for 2012's "Call Me Maybe."

So before Perry assumes her judging duties on "American Idol" this fall, she's already made three good picks where it counts for her personally, setting up her audiences for a pop knockout.

New Year's Songs: 16 Tracks To Give You A Fresh Start In 2024, From The Beatles To Taylor Swift

Whether you're looking to vibe with J Balvin or roar with Katy Perry, let these tracks welcome you to a prosperous and hopeful new year.

The beginning of a new year often results in moments of reflection as well as anticipation about what lies ahead. And with the myriad of feelings that ensue upon New Year's Eve, music serves as a powerful source for both introspection and inspiration.

There are countless songs that give listeners a chance to reflect and resonate with the possibilities of what's yet to come. Whether it's the pulsingly hopeful beat of Jamie xx's "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)," the inspiring narrative of The Notorious B.I.G 's "Juicy," or Elton John's pumped-up "I'm Still Standing," a good soundtrack is the perfect catalyst for starting a new year on the right note.

As you envision what the coming year has in store, enjoy this playlist from GRAMMY.com — curated not just to celebrate the moment the clock strikes 12, but to infuse the coming year with inspiration and cheer.

79.5 — "B.D.F.Q"

Inspired by singer Kate Mattison's experiences in Detroit, 79,5's "B.D.F.Q." is about perseverance in the face of a music industry marred by misogyny. Short for "B—, Don't F—ing Quit," "B.D.F.Q." amplifies a mood of independence and strength with the declaration, "They! Don't mean a thing/ Don't mean a thing, just do your thing!" While the message is timeless, "B.D.F.Q." will certainly amp you up for any challenges the new year presents.

The Beatles — "Here Comes The Sun"

Whether you spin the 1969 original or the reinvigorated 2019 mix, the Beatles ' "Here Comes The Sun,"  remains a classic symbol of continuation and hope. A track from the Fab Four's iconic Abbey Road album, this George Harrison composition is celebrated for its uplifting melody and serene lyrics that playfully describe a new dawn and brighter days ahead.

Elton John — "I'm Still Standing"

Elton John delivered an upbeat ode to durability and the ability to bounce back with "I'm Still Standing," a 1983 track that resonates 40 years on. Between its catchy melody and John's energetic performance (particularly in the beach-set music video), the song conveys a triumphant message about overcoming challenges and emerging stronger.

"Hamilton" — "My Shot"

Of the many dynamic numbers in Lin-Manuel Miranda 's renowned musical "Hamilton," "My Shot" is arguably the most inspirational and universal. A powerfully charged manifesto that embodies ambition and determination — delivered with an electrifying blend of hip-hop and theatrical flair — "My Shot" celebrates seizing opportunities and making a mark. It's a welcome New Year's song choice for those compelled to channel their inner strength and embrace new challenges in the year ahead.

J Balvin — "6 AM" feat. Farruko

This vibrant reggaeton track from J Balvin 's 2013 album La Familia encapsulates the spirit of spontaneity. Its infectious beat and catchy lyrics manifest as a celebration of lively nights and the adventures that unfold in the early after hours — hence, the 6 a.m. title. This one's for the night owls, who may see the sun rise at the turn of the new year.

Jamie xx — "I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)" feat. Young Thug, Popcaan

"I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)" by Jamie xx is as upbeat and optimistic as hip-hop tracks come. Featuring Young Thug and Popcaan , the 2015 track melds elements of dance and reggae for an infectious ode to good times ahead — an enduring NYE sentiment.

Jimmy Chamberlin Complex — "Life Begins Again"

The title track of their 2005 album, "Life Begins Again"  is an intricate and evocative composition that blends elements of jazz and rock with a bit of emo sentiment. The track showcases Jimmy Chamberlin 's exceptional drumming prowess while promising that life is cyclical — every day can be the first of your life with the right attitude.

John Lennon — "Just Like Starting Over"

With themes of rekindling love and starting anew, John Lennon 's "[Just Like] Starting Over" is a fitting tribute to fresh starts and the enduring power of renewal in all aspects of life. And as the final single released while he was alive, it's a bittersweet testament to Lennon's enduring legacy.

Katy Perry — "Roar"

Katy Perry' s "Roar," from her 2013 album Prism , is a proud declaration of self-empowerment and finding one's voice. An electrifying track with a booming chorus and spirited lyrics, it embodies the journey from silence to strength. Its message of embracing one's true self and speaking out makes it an inspiring celebration of new beginnings.

Lisa LeBlanc — "Pourquoi faire aujourd'hui"

For those looking to give themselves a little break as the new year begins, Lisa LeBlanc's "Pourquoi faire aujourd'hui" may be the song for you. A single from her 2021 album Chiac Disco, the energetic, disco-inspired French language track features playful lyrics about procrastination, with its titular line asking, "Why do today what you could do tomorrow?" — starting the year off in laid-back fashion. If tu ne parles pas Français , LeBlanc's catchy dance beats are fuel for a joyful New Year's Eve atmosphere.

Lizzo — "Good As Hell"

Like many of Lizzo 's songs, "Good as Hell" captures a vibrant, empowering spirit. It celebrates self-care and resilience in the face of adversity, blending a lively rhythm with Lizzo's dynamic vocals. Its uplifting lyrics and infectious energy encourage a sense of confidence and self-appreciation — a powerful anthem of positivity any time of the year.

Nina Simone — "Feeling Good"

A timeless classic first made famous by Nina Simone , "Feeling Good" is a powerful anthem of rejuvenation and hope. Simone's jazz-infused rendition was released in 1965; its resolute delivery captures a spirit of personal transformation and empowerment, offering an enduring sentiment going into the new year: "It's a new dawn/ It's a new day/ It's a new life for me, ooh/ And I'm feeling good."

Notorious B.I.G. — "Juicy"

Although The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Juicy" is a personal account of the late rapper's rise to the top, the song encapsulates a spirit of triumph that can inspire anyone with a dream. From its bouncy beat to the iconic "If you don't know, now you know" hook, "Juicy" will have you reaching for the stars.

Otis Redding & Carla Thomas — "New Year's Resolution"

Memphis legends Otis Redding and Carla Thomas ' aptly titled 1967 album King & Queen is notable for being the final studio release before Redding passed away that December. The album also spawned a NYE classic: "New Year's Resolution." With lyrics that explore the concept of making resolutions and embracing change in the new year. While the song lacks Redding's trademark soulful wail, "New Year's Resolution" is temperate and contemplative — a reprieve from the let-it-all-out powerful Stax sound to ease your way into the new year.

Peter Cat Recording Co. — "Portrait of a Time"

Both modern and nostalgic, Peter Cat Recording Co.'s "Portrait of a Time" blends jazz, and indie rock for an eclectic and nostalgic, introspective jam. The song carries a reflective mood of contemplation and transition, with lyrics that encourage leaving "confusion and darkening clouds" in the past and hopping in the Lamborghini of life for a new wild ride.

Taylor Swift — "New Year's Day"

After all of the bold, empowered statements on Taylor Swift' s 2017 album reputation , she closes the LP with a tender, piano-driven ballad that captures the quiet intimacy and hopeful sentiments of a new year. Aptly titled "New Year's Day," the song's reflective and heartfelt lyrics contemplate love and loyalty found in life's fleeting moments. Swift's delicate vocal delivery and the track's gentle melody evoke a sense of warmth and enduring connection, making it a poignant choice to embrace the new year with a sense of closeness.

GRAMMY Rewind: Kendrick Lamar Honors Hip-Hop's Greats While Accepting Best Rap Album GRAMMY For 'To Pimp a Butterfly' In 2016

Upon winning the GRAMMY for Best Rap Album for 'To Pimp a Butterfly,' Kendrick Lamar thanked those that helped him get to the stage, and the artists that blazed the trail for him.

Updated Friday Oct. 13, 2023 to include info about Kendrick Lamar's most recent GRAMMY wins, as of the 2023 GRAMMYs.

A GRAMMY veteran these days, Kendrick Lamar has won 17 GRAMMYs and has received 47 GRAMMY nominations overall. A sizable chunk of his trophies came from the 58th annual GRAMMY Awards in 2016, when he walked away with five — including his first-ever win in the Best Rap Album category.

This installment of GRAMMY Rewind turns back the clock to 2016, revisiting Lamar's acceptance speech upon winning Best Rap Album for To Pimp A Butterfly . Though Lamar was alone on stage, he made it clear that he wouldn't be at the top of his game without the help of a broad support system.

"First off, all glory to God, that's for sure," he said, kicking off a speech that went on to thank his parents, who he described as his "those who gave me the responsibility of knowing, of accepting the good with the bad."

Looking for more GRAMMYs news? The 2024 GRAMMY nominations are here!

He also extended his love and gratitude to his fiancée, Whitney Alford, and shouted out his Top Dawg Entertainment labelmates. Lamar specifically praised Top Dawg's CEO, Anthony Tiffith, for finding and developing raw talent that might not otherwise get the chance to pursue their musical dreams.

"We'd never forget that: Taking these kids out of the projects, out of Compton, and putting them right here on this stage, to be the best that they can be," Lamar — a Compton native himself — continued, leading into an impassioned conclusion spotlighting some of the cornerstone rap albums that came before To Pimp a Butterfly .

"Hip-hop. Ice Cube . This is for hip-hop," he said. "This is for Snoop Dogg , Doggystyle . This is for Illmatic , this is for Nas . We will live forever. Believe that."

To Pimp a Butterfly singles "Alright" and "These Walls" earned Lamar three more GRAMMYs that night, the former winning Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song and the latter taking Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (the song features Bilal , Anna Wise and Thundercat ). He also won Best Music Video for the remix of Taylor Swift 's "Bad Blood."

Lamar has since won Best Rap Album two more times, taking home the golden gramophone in 2018 for his blockbuster LP DAMN ., and in 2023 for his bold fifth album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers .

8 Artists Who Were Inspired By Their Teachers: Rihanna, Adele, Jay-Z & More

In honor of Music In Our Schools Month this March, take a look at how teachers made a heartwarming impact on superstars like Katy Perry and John Legend.

Before Rihanna , Billy Joel and Jay-Z became some of the biggest names in music, they were students just like the rest of us. Without some particularly special teachers, they might not be the superstars they are today, and they all remember who first encouraged them.

Within the past few years, Rihanna made a special trip to a cricket match in England to reunite with her old P.E. teacher from Barbados, who she calls her "MVP"; Joel traveled back to his New York hometown to honor the teacher who said he should be a professional musician; and Jay-Z told David Letterman that his sixth grade English teacher made him fall in love with words.

In honor of Music In Our Schools Month — which raises awareness for supporting and cultivating worthwhile music programs in K-12 — GRAMMY.com highlights eight artists who have praised their teachers for making a lifelong impact.

After watching Joel tackle Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat Minor, Op. 23, his high school music appreciation teacher Chuck Arnold suggested that he consider music as a career.

"He said to me, you should be a professional musician," Joel recalled of his Hicksville High School mentor during a 1996 event at C.W. Post College. "Now, for a teacher to say that, it's like condemning someone to a life of poverty, drug taking, alcoholism and failure.

"A teacher is telling me this," he added seriously. "It had a huge influence on me."

In 2022, Joel was on hand to congratulate Arnold during the dedication of the Charles "Chuck" Arnold Theatre at the school. "This is for the coolest teacher there ever was," he praised.

. @CBSSunday surprised Lizzo with her high school band director, who encouraged her to apply herself when she was learning to play the flute — and her reaction was priceless: “Wow, I did it, didn't I?” https://t.co/dwffNvYzpb pic.twitter.com/xp5kDK5pWB — CBS News (@CBSNews) October 6, 2019

In 2019, CBS Sunday arranged a surprise visit with the singer and Manny Gonzales, the former band director at her alma mater, Elsik High School in Houston. She told the network that Gonzales helped her get a scholarship to study classical flute at University of Houston.

"You told my ass!" Lizzo exclaimed as she squeezed him. "You were like, 'Get it together, girl, 'cause you are special. Apply yourself!' Those moments meant so much to me."

The Atlanta DJ/producer and king of crunk has done more than take parties to the next level — he has invested in the educational future of children in Africa by building two schools in Ghana with the non-profit organization Pencils of Promise. He credits a mentor at Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta for sparking his brain when he was a teenager.

"It was my music teacher [who inspired me to dream bigger]," he said in a 2019 interview with Yahoo! "I wanted to play drums, and if I didn't play drums, I wouldn't make music, and drums are the foundation for what I do."

Roddy Estwick was Rihanna's P.E. teacher in Barbados and is now the assistant coach of the West Indies cricket team. The two had an emotional reunion at the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England.

"He made a lasting impact on my life and he really offered great advice to me and many others when we were at school at Combermere," she told Barbados Today amid their reunion. "I just wanted to let everyone know what he meant to me in my development and what he did for us back at school in Barbados." Essence reported that Rihanna described him as, "My mentor, my champ, my MVP" on her Instagram stories.

John Legend

The Ohio native credits his English teacher Mrs. Bodey at North High School in Springfield for setting him on the path that culminated in his music career.

"Until her class, I hadn't believed in my ability as a writer," Legend shared in a 2017 op-ed for Huffington Post . "She recognized my potential and showed me that I could write with creativity, with clarity, with passion."

He continued, "Mrs. Bodey, along with a few other teachers, helped me gain confidence in my skills and pushed me to challenge myself. They pushed me to graduate second in my class. They pushed me to deliver the speech at our graduation. They pushed me to earn a scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania, to hone my writing as an English Major and, ultimately, toward a successful career as a songwriter."

The singer was reunited with the most pivotal teacher in her life during her "An Audience with Adele" concert special in 2021. While the singer took questions from the crowd, actress Emma Thompson asked Adele if she had a supporter or protector in the past.

"I had a teacher at [south London high school] Chestnut Grove, who taught me English. That was Miss McDonald," Adele said. "She got me really into English literature. Like, I've always been obsessed with English and obviously now I write lyrics… She really made us care, and we knew that she cared about us."

Miss McDonald then surprised Adele on stage, and the singer was brought to tears — a touching highlight of the special. She even told her former teacher that she still has the books from her class!

While Perry has admitted that she wishes she had a better overall education, her former music school teacher gave her confidence to pursue singing seriously.

"I'm kind of bummed at this stage that I didn't have a great education because I could really use that these days," she said in a 2014 interview with Yahoo! "There was a teacher named Agatha Danoff who was my vocal teacher and music teacher at the Music Academy of the West. It was very fancy and I didn't come from any money… and she always used to give me a break on my lessons. I owe her a lot of credit and I appreciate that she looked out for me when I didn't have enough money to pay."

Picture a young Shawn Carter — now better known as Jay-Z —  with his head stuck in a dictionary.

"I had a sixth grade teacher, her name was Ms. Lowden and I just loved the class so much," Jay-Z said during his appearance on My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman in 2018.

He later realized how much Renee Rosenblum-Lowden, who taught him at Intermediate School 318 in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, had an influence on his passion for language. "Like, reading the dictionary and just my love of words," he explained. "I just connected with her."

"I knew he was extremely bright, but he was quiet," Rosenblum-Lowden told Brut in 2019, sharing that he scored at the 12th-grade level on a sixth-grade reading test.

"He's been very kind," she added. "Every famous person has a teacher who probably influenced them, and I wish they would all shout out the way Jay-Z did."

A Guide To Modern Funk For The Dance Floor: L'Imperatrice, Shiro Schwarz, Franc Moody, Say She She & Moniquea

James Brown changed the sound of popular music when he found the power of the one and unleashed the funk with "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag." Today, funk lives on in many forms, including these exciting bands from across the world.

It's rare that a genre can be traced back to a single artist or group, but for funk, that was James Brown . The Godfather of Soul coined the phrase and style of playing known as "on the one," where the first downbeat is emphasized, instead of the typical second and fourth beats in pop, soul and other styles. As David Cheal eloquently explains, playing on the one "left space for phrases and riffs, often syncopated around the beat, creating an intricate, interlocking grid which could go on and on." You know a funky bassline when you hear it; its fat chords beg your body to get up and groove.

Brown's 1965 classic, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," became one of the first funk hits, and has been endlessly sampled and covered over the years, along with his other groovy tracks. Of course, many other funk acts followed in the '60s, and the genre thrived in the '70s and '80s as the disco craze came and went, and the originators of hip-hop and house music created new music from funk and disco's strong, flexible bones built for dancing.

Legendary funk bassist Bootsy Collins learned the power of the one from playing in Brown's band, and brought it to George Clinton , who created P-funk, an expansive, Afrofuturistic , psychedelic exploration of funk with his various bands and projects, including Parliament-Funkadelic . Both Collins and Clinton remain active and funkin', and have offered their timeless grooves to collabs with younger artists, including Kali Uchis , Silk Sonic , and Omar Apollo; and Kendrick Lamar , Flying Lotus , and Thundercat , respectively.

In the 1980s, electro-funk was born when artists like Afrika Bambaataa, Man Parrish, and Egyptian Lover began making futuristic beats with the Roland TR-808 drum machine — often with robotic vocals distorted through a talk box. A key distinguishing factor of electro-funk is a de-emphasis on vocals, with more phrases than choruses and verses. The sound influenced contemporaneous hip-hop, funk and electronica, along with acts around the globe, while current acts like Chromeo, DJ Stingray, and even Egyptian Lover himself keep electro-funk alive and well.

Today, funk lives in many places, with its heavy bass and syncopated grooves finding way into many nooks and crannies of music. There's nu-disco and boogie funk, nodding back to disco bands with soaring vocals and dance floor-designed instrumentation. G-funk continues to influence Los Angeles hip-hop, with innovative artists like Dam-Funk and Channel Tres bringing the funk and G-funk, into electro territory. Funk and disco-centered '70s revival is definitely having a moment, with acts like Ghost Funk Orchestra and Parcels , while its sparkly sprinklings can be heard in pop from Dua Lipa , Doja Cat , and, in full "Soul Train" character, Silk Sonic . There are also acts making dreamy, atmospheric music with a solid dose of funk, such as Khruangbin ’s global sonic collage.

There are many bands that play heavily with funk, creating lush grooves designed to get you moving. Read on for a taste of five current modern funk and nu-disco artists making band-led uptempo funk built for the dance floor. Be sure to press play on the Spotify playlist above, and check out GRAMMY.com's playlist on Apple Music , Amazon Music and Pandora .

Say She She

Aptly self-described as "discodelic soul," Brooklyn-based seven-piece Say She She make dreamy, operatic funk, led by singer-songwriters Nya Gazelle Brown, Piya Malik and Sabrina Mileo Cunningham. Their '70s girl group-inspired vocal harmonies echo, sooth and enchant as they cover poignant topics with feminist flair.

While they’ve been active in the New York scene for a few years, they’ve gained wider acclaim for the irresistible music they began releasing this year, including their debut album, Prism . Their 2022 debut single "Forget Me Not" is an ode to ground-breaking New York art collective Guerilla Girls, and " Norma " is their protest anthem in response to the news that Roe vs. Wade could be (and was) overturned. The band name is a nod to funk legend Nile Rodgers , from the "Le freak, c'est chi" exclamation in Chic's legendary tune "Le Freak."

Moniquea 's unique voice oozes confidence, yet invites you in to dance with her to the super funky boogie rhythms. The Pasadena, California artist was raised on funk music; her mom was in a cover band that would play classics like Aretha Franklin’ s "Get It Right" and Gladys Knight ’s "Love Overboard." Moniquea released her first boogie funk track at 20 and, in 2011, met local producer XL Middelton — a bonafide purveyor of funk. She's been a star artist on his MoFunk Records ever since, and they've collabed on countless tracks, channeling West Coast energy with a heavy dose of G-funk, sunny lyrics and upbeat, roller disco-ready rhythms.

Her latest release is an upbeat nod to classic West Coast funk, produced by Middleton, and follows her February 2022 groovy, collab-filled album, On Repeat .

Shiro Schwarz

Shiro Schwarz is a Mexico City-based duo, consisting of Pammela Rojas and Rafael Marfil, who helped establish a modern funk scene in the richly creative Mexican metropolis. On "Electrify" — originally released in 2016 on Fat Beats Records and reissued in 2021 by MoFunk — Shiro Schwarz's vocals playfully contrast each other, floating over an insistent, upbeat bassline and an '80s throwback electro-funk rhythm with synth flourishes.

Their music manages to be both nostalgic and futuristic — and impossible to sit still to. 2021 single "Be Kind" is sweet, mellow and groovy, perfect chic lounge funk. Shiro Schwarz’s latest track, the joyfully nostalgic "Hey DJ," is a collab with funkstress Saucy Lady and U-Key.

L'Impératrice

L'Impératrice (the empress in French) are a six-piece Parisian group serving an infectiously joyful blend of French pop, nu-disco, funk and psychedelia. Flore Benguigui's vocals are light and dreamy, yet commanding of your attention, while lyrics have a feminist touch.

During their energetic live sets, L'Impératrice members Charles de Boisseguin and Hagni Gwon (keys), David Gaugué (bass), Achille Trocellier (guitar), and Tom Daveau (drums) deliver extended instrumental jam sessions to expand and connect their music. Gaugué emphasizes the thick funky bass, and Benguigui jumps around the stage while sounding like an angel. L’Impératrice’s latest album, 2021’s Tako Tsubo , is a sunny, playful French disco journey.

Franc Moody

Franc Moody 's bio fittingly describes their music as "a soul funk and cosmic disco sound." The London outfit was birthed by friends Ned Franc and Jon Moody in the early 2010s, when they were living together and throwing parties in North London's warehouse scene. In 2017, the group grew to six members, including singer and multi-instrumentalist Amber-Simone.

Their music feels at home with other electro-pop bands like fellow Londoners Jungle and Aussie act Parcels. While much of it is upbeat and euphoric, Franc Moody also dips into the more chilled, dreamy realm, such as the vibey, sultry title track from their recently released Into the Ether .
