All about the Serenity Area on a Carnival Cruise ship

Last Updated on April 4, 2024

No matter how well a cruise ship is designed, it can feel crowded, especially on sea days when all passengers are on board. It’s seemingly much worse in the summer months when ships are bustling with energetic children. So finding a place to have some peace and quiet can be quite a challenge. Thankfully, it can be easy to find some solitude in the Serenity Area on a Carnival cruise ship.

Entrance to Serenity adults only area on Carnival Dream

The Serenity Area, technically called “Serenity Adult-Only Retreat,” is an adults-only section of the cruise ship. Only passengers 21 and older are allowed in this area, and while an occasional kid may slip in, it’s not long before a crew member politely guides them to the main pool.

The Serenity Area usually has a different feel from the rest of the ship; you’ll find upgraded padded loungers, lay-flat day beds, clamshells, and hammocks. The vibrant colors from the rest of the Carnival ship are replaced with rich dark brown tones and accented with teal highlights. Soft, peaceful music is piped in through music systems. The Serenity Area also usually has its own bar, and some ships even have a salad bar in it (Vista, Horizon, Panorama, Mardi Gras, and Celebration).

The Serenity Area first debuted on the Carnival Inspiration in 2007. Carnival has long been known as a family-friendly cruise line, which meant lots of children running around. To help adults find some much-needed peace and quiet while on vacation, Carnival sectioned off a section of the ship to be adults only. The area was a hit with guests. A Serenity Area was soon added to the Inspiration’s sister ships and then rolled out to the rest of the Carnival fleet over the years. Today, every Carnival ship has a dedicated Serenity Area.

What is in the Serenity Area of a Carnival Ship?

The size, layout, and what’s included in the Serenity Area will vary depending on the ship. Since a majority of the fleet was in service before this section area was added, most ships required a retrofit to add this section. During major retrofits, Carnival took existing space and upgraded it to the new Serenity Area. Because of that, the different Serenity Areas all have different features and layouts, but the general effect is the same. Regardless of the ship, though, the Serenity area has a dedicated bar, upgraded loungers, and a water feature (a pool, hot tub, or both).

Which Carnival ships have adults-only pools in the Serenity Area?

The main pools on a Carnival ship can get pretty busy with children, so an adults-only pool is a perfect solution. Unfortunately, less than half of the Carnival ships have a pool in the Serenity Area. So if you love an adults-only pool during your cruise, you’re limited in your options.

These Carnival ships have a pool in the Serenity Area:

  • Carnival Celebration
  • Carnival Jubilee
  • Carnival Legend
  • Carnival Luminosa
  • Carnival Miracle
  • Carnival Mardi Gras
  • Carnival Pride
  • Carnival Spirit
  • Carnival Splendor
  • Carnival Sunshine

Which Carnival ships have adults-only hot tubs in the Serenity Area?

Almost every Serenity Area has at least one hot tub, whirlpool, or jacuzzi. It’s a great place to relax during the day or in the evenings.

You can find adult-only hot tubs on the following Carnival ships:

  •    Carnival Breeze – 2 hot tubs
  •    Carnival Celebration – 2 hot tubs
  •    Carnival Conquest – 2 hot tubs
  •    Carnival Dream – 2 hot tubs
  •    Carnival Firenze – 2 hot tubs
  •    Carnival Freedom – 2 hot tubs
  •    Carnival Glory – 2 hot tubs
  •    Carnival Horizon – 2 hot tubs
  •    Carnival Legend – 1 hot tub
  •    Carnival Liberty – 2 hot tubs
  •    Carnival Luminosa – 2 hot tubs
  •    Carnival Magic – 2 hot tubs
  •    Carnival Mardi Gras – 2 hot tubs
  •    Carnival Miracle – 1 hot tub

  •    Carnival Sunshine – 1 hot tub
  •    Carnival Valor – 2 hot tubs
  •    Carnival Venezia – 2 hot tubs
  •    Carnival Vista – 1 hot tub

Which Carnival ships have the Serenity Area in the aft (or back) of the ship?

The location of the Serenity Area can make a big difference in the experience. Often, on the ships where the adults-only deck is on the front of the ship, it can get windy, and high glass partitions are needed to make it bearable. However, the partitions take away a bit from the view.

Ships that have the Serenity Area in the back often have more calm winds. They also offer much better ocean views because they don’t need the high glass partitions and instead have standard rails.

The following Carnival ships have a Serenity Area on the back of the ship:

  • Carnival Paradise

How much does the Serenity Area cost?

There is no additional charge to use the Serenity Area on a Carnival ship. If you’re a passenger over 21, just head over to the deck and enjoy.

How crowded is the Serenity Area?

Since there’s no additional fee to use the Serenity Area, it can get crowded on sea days. Especially in the morning, it can be hard to find a lounger and definitely hard to find a clamshell on sea days. Thankfully, there seems to be fewer chair hogs/savers in the Serenity Area than in other areas of the ship.

Pool with waterfall filled with people

In the afternoon, it usually opens up more as people head to lunch and for a nap. The Serenity Area is also a great place to spend time in the evening with the soft music and mood lighting. Usually, once per cruise, they’ll be a party in the Serenity Area.

Carnival Serenity Retreat (Adults Only Area)

January 16, 2015 by Billie Hillier Leave a Comment

Our family recently spent time over Thanksgiving on the Carnival Victory to celebrate my sister’s 40th birthday and my dad’s 65th birthday.

With a group of 10 of use with varying ages, we were all looking for something different to do on the ship.

One of the best amenities on the Carnival Cruise Line is their Serenity Adult Only area. (At this time the Serenity Retreat is available fleetwide, except for the Carnival Conquest and the Carnival Triumph.)

It is by far my favorite place on the ship.

When I was there it wasn’t too crowded but of course, that will vary with each cruise and on sea days it tends to be a lot more crowded.

The Serenity Retreat is open 24 hours a day during your cruise and I would often see folks there at night enjoying a quiet book read or a soak in the hot tub.

Although the area is accessible around the clock, the hot tub and bar hours are from 8 AM to 10 PM, but be sure to check once you’re onboard, as it can vary.

Serenity Deck Seating

On each side of the lounge, there are covered areas to sit and chat with others (or by yourself) while still having views. I love the “bird nest” lounge chairs and would grab one of these when available.

The deck has a spa-like feel with black faux-wicker furniture with teal-colored cushions and sun-yellow shade umbrellas and guest towels.

Serenity Showers

Showers to appeal to everyone… notice the different shower head types! The showers above are on the Carnival Victory. Cruisers will be able to enjoy:

Warm Carribean Waterfall

Warm Water Bucket

Oh I forgot what this one was!

Pick a side of the ship you want to be on and lounge on this lounge beds. There was one lady who made herself at home with towels, iPad, drinks, books, and more. She was there almost every day enjoying her serenity away from others.

If the oversized lounge beds are not “your thing” then you may enjoy the area with regular sun-lounging chairs.

Serenity Hot Tubs

Two hot tubs for cruisers to enjoy with a lot of your friends. (Note – they are closed since the ship was in port.)

The water temperature for these hot tubs is truly hot as opposed to the ones that everyone uses. No small children means hotter water!

The hot tub hours are from 8 AM – 10 PM each are on your cruise.

carnival victory serenity

Serenity Bar

Thirsty? There is a bar to quench your thirst with juices, soda, adult beverages, and more. The bar hours are from 8 AM – 10 PM each are on your cruise.

If you are considering a Carnival Cruise and want to get away from the main crowd anytime during your cruise, consider heading up to the Serenity Retreat.

Pro Tip: If you are looking for “a little quiet,” go to the back of the Serenity area if your ship is configured where the chairs are near the water slides.

Carnival Serenity Photos

Smaller Carnival ships do not have the full-blown adults-only lounge and I was very disappointed when I made my way to the Carnival Serenity on Imagination looking for a cabana only to find a small area with lounge chairs.

The area on the smaller ships is adult only – 21 years old minimum, but the amenities are not as great as the longer cruises on the larger ships.

This didn’t stop my girlfriend of spending a few spare hours at the Serenity to enjoy some quiet reading time.

How "adult" is Serenity?

Quick poll...

On my most recent cruise, while lounging in the Serenity area, a woman decided to remove her bikini top and lay out face up. It didn't bother me, but the women laying next to me were scandalized and kept talking loudly that the topless woman should cover up (but didn't actually say anything directly to her.)

What do you think? Is the adult only area swimsuit optional?

It is not policy that Serenity is clothing optional.

I personally don't care about that but it is NOT the way it is supposed to be there.

There are many adult only hotels in the world. Only some of them are clothing optional hotels.

Just because it is an adult area doesn't make it automatically a place where you can just take off clothing!

It's a Ship!!!

Carnival used to have a top optional section on some ships, but they did away with it a while ago. Serenity is not top optional.

This is a touchy subject. I know the ship leaves from the U.S. But almost all of the staff and some passengers aren't from the U.S. And don't have our views on clothing optional areas. I've seen where women forgot they removed their tops to not get a tan line on their back and forgot and gave the main pool area a show and I've also seen thongs by the main pool. I think it's ok if done in the adult only area where no minors are allowed.

It's a cruise line directed at Americans where the standard is if something is clothing optional it is posted. When Carnival had the topless deck it was posted. There are nude cruises and other lines that cater to this

Am I bothered by this? Not in the slightest. But I do not think it is "appropriate."

We just got off the Fascination, leaving from San Juan. There was never any "topless" stuff going on. It was just a nice place to relax away from the noise. We went there about every afternoon and several times at night, and never was it "too adult."

I think this happens on EVERY cruise, at some point in time. We had a woman on one cruise who would take a dip...go to her lounger and change into a dry bathing suit in front of everyone. Got to the point where all the 13-15 year old boys congregated just to see the show! Yep...stark naked...and not "young"!

But no...there are no "clothing optional" areas on ships unless you're in Europe...they don't mind a bit of nudity like we Americans!

sorry, I had to laugh at the beginning of his thread

All kidding aside why are Americans to hung up on boobs. I have never seen any signs on the Serenity deck saying "no topless"

Good point. In fact I haven't seen that sign on the lido deck either.

It's not the old Funnel Deck.

My late husband was so disappointed one our first cruise. He went up to what was then the topless deck on the Celebration and no one was there.

No Doubt!!;p

The Europeans I know say it's not something they think about. They don't look for "clothing optional" because in Europe it's completely normal to go topless and they don't realize it's an issue when they do it. I'm okay with it. But I'm a guy so...

Canadianmama3

Here in Ontario Canada it's perfectly legal for a woman to walk around the street topless. You don't see it often, but it's legal.

I would never do it, but that's just me. I honestly wouldn't care or even pay much attention if a woman around me took her top off. If guys can do it why can't women? Way too many people are way to hung up on boobs. And I wouldn't even care if my kids saw it. Not even my teenaged son. I would look at it as a great opportunity to remind my boys that women and girls are to always be respected and not treated as sexual objects.

my wife and i made one only trip to the serenity deck. There was only five people on the deck. There was a bartender who spoke very little english, my wife, me and a young couple who were in the act of making a baby in the hot tub.

I would of rather had the topless woman.

Well, as many people will gladly point out, Carnival doesn't seem to enforce the "dress-code" on the formal night in the Main Dining Room, so why would they enforce the... um... "undress code" on Serenity Deck? Personally, I am not bothered either way.

All kidding aside though, I have stumbled across 8th/9th grade kids getting "real cozy" in the private covered couches on Serenity trying to do adult things while not actually being adults.

SkyMaster

I've been on lots and lots of cruises, and the Serenity Deck, (Especially on "Fantasy Class" ships ) is my favorite spot, and I spend lots of time there, listening to music, and just relaxing. I've NEVER seen topless women there. (Yes,,near topless, but not topless.) I have seen topless women around the main pool on the first day of a cruise. I presume they are European, and assume that it's O.K. Not a big deal

When they did have a topless deck around the stack, I'd ALWAYS go up there to check to make sure that the lovely, and talented Mrs. Jones wasn't there. (That's my story, and I'm sticking with it!)

Almost everyplace is a no topless area, and I never see signs. Like on Main street in my town. You can't walk down the street topless, but I have never saw a sign stating it.

Besides the fact this is Carnival, and anything goes, there are no signs for all kinds of things that are not permitted. Such as no sex on the deck. But it happens, just read the Carnival Boards. Then there are all kinds of signs such as no diving, jumping etc, and watch your kids, and yet, non of those happen, because signs are not read, and whenever you have a sign, than the opposite happens on "your vacation, do what you want".

So was my 13 y/o son.

I wouldn't care if she undid her top, just cover up when you turn over please.

Let's just all be on the safe side and keep it covered... ;)

I've seen plenty around LA beaches, and cheers to those with a confident body image, but it's usually someone you wish you could un-see! LOL

Florence in California: Carnival launches new Italian-style cruise ship

carnival cruises serenity adult only retreat

Carnival Cruise Line is bringing a touch of Italy to Southern California.

The line launched Carnival Firenze, inspired by its namesake city, this week. The vessel sailed its maiden voyage from its Long Beach homeport on Thursday.

“We carry more guests than any other cruise line from California, and now this ship is giving us the opportunity to offer more fun to more people sailing from Long Beach,” Christine Duffy, the line’s president, said in a news release . “The recipe combining this ship’s beautiful Italian theming with the familiarity of our friendly team’s hospitality is, in a word, perfecto!”

The ship is the second in the Carnival Fun Italian Style concept after sister ship Carnival Venezia joined the fleet last summer. Both were originally part of Costa Cruises – also owned by parent company Carnival Corp. – before being rehomed.

Where will Carnival Firenze sail?

The roughly 5,000-guest ship will offer Baja Mexico and Mexican Riviera cruises ranging from three to seven days. Stops include destinations like Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Catalina Island.

What can guests expect on board?

Built in 2020, Firenze was refurbished earlier this year to add Carnival-specific touches. Those include staple venues like the Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse and JavaBlue Cafe.

But the line leans into the ship’s Italian motif. The ship’s atrium was designed with Florence’s Piazza del Duomo in mind and the Lido deck takes influence from the Italian Riviera. There’s even a replica of Michelangelo’s David on board that was previously on Carnival Pride (the real sculpture is located in Florence’s Accademia Gallery).

The theme extends to the food and drink options, with eateries like Italian specialty restaurant Il Viaggio, Mexican-Italian fusion venue Tomodoro and La Strada Grill, serving Italian street food. Frizzante specializes in bubbly drinks, and passengers can sip craft cocktails and Italian coffee at Amari.

Other features include the WaterWorks water park and Serenity Adult-Only Retreat.

How long should I take a cruise?: Here's how short and long cruises compare

How much does Carnival Firenze cost?

Prices vary based on sailing date and other factors, but a five-day Mexican Riviera cruise departing on May 30 currently starts at $409 per person based on double occupancy, according to Carnival’s website . The fare includes much of the food on the ship, drinks like regular coffee and iced tea and more.

5 Cruises To Take For Spring Break

I f you’re interested in thinking outside the box this year regarding your spring break vacation, consider rounding up yourself, your family, or your girlfriends for a 5-star cruise vacation.

Nowadays, spring break cruises possibly offer more than hotels—given easy access to beachy locations, an array of bars and restaurants on board, and, depending on the location, water sports. What’s most appealing about cruises is there’s something for everyone: the children can enjoy waterslides and roller coasters, while the adults can soak up the sun and consume delicious craft cocktails or go out dancing, all on one ship. However, it’s important to note that specific spring break cruises usually occur during the slower travel months of March and April.

Given its popularity, spring break travel Bahamas, Caribbean, and Mexico cruises during peak school holiday weeks can be more expensive and crowded than in the surrounding weeks. Check out our list of the five of the top cruises you should consider for your spring break vacation.

Royal Caribbean:

Even though college spring breakers usually gravitate toward Royal Caribbean's shorter cruises, given their school schedules, families and couples find their programming from the Caribbean and the Bahamas just as appealing, given all of the options of the ships at sea like Harmony of the Seas, Icon of the Seas , Oasis of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas . All of the mega-ships boast kid's clubs and teen hangouts helping parents to get a break. Not to mention, these ships have plenty of fun activities like waterslides, escape rooms, mini-golf, rock climbing walls, and carousel rides. The entire family can enjoy shows that include Broadway musicals, ice skating performances, and acrobatic events. The Royal Caribbean's two private destinations, Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas and Labadee in Haiti offer gorgeous beaches and attractions.

Carnival Cruise Line

This cruise line is popular because of all of the amazing diverse destinations offered for a lower price point. The Carnival Cruise line sails to Bermuda, Alaska, Europe, Mexico, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Australia, and more. Their onboard activities are just as appealing, as they offer spas, sky rides, a serenity adult retreat, and of course gambling. The only potential downfall, is Carnival requires guests under 21 to travel with someone aged 25 or older.

Virgin Voyages

This cruise is perfect for taking your girlfriends or your significant other on, as there are no kids are allowed. Virgin Voyages ' ships require guests to be 18 or older to sail, and the activities on the ship have adult themes. On this cruise, you can attend a drag show and let your hair down at late-night pool parties.

Disney Cruise Line:

Consider Disney Magic or Fantasy for your upcoming vacation. Who doesn’t love Disney-themed cruises, especially parents and children? Think of this cruise to get a proper introduction to the Caribbean, as it’s a weeklong voyage throughout the Caribbean and the Bahamas. The upside for this cruise is that the options aren't just convenient for East Coasters. The line sails ships from Galveston, New Orleans, and San Diego for family vacations to Mexico.

MSC Cruises:

Get some fun and the sun with a quick Bahamas cruise with a posh flair on MSC Cruises' MSC Divina, MSC Magnifica, or MSC Seashore. The ships offer three- and four-night cruises to Nassau and Ocean Cay, MSC's private island , and attract a multinational, multilingual crowd. Also, MSC's fares are consistently affordable relative to other cruise lines.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

carnival cruises serenity adult only retreat

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

carnival cruises serenity adult only retreat

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

carnival cruises serenity adult only retreat

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

carnival cruises serenity adult only retreat

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

carnival cruises serenity adult only retreat

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

carnival cruises serenity adult only retreat

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

carnival cruises serenity adult only retreat

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

The Club also features exclusive programming, including sunrise yoga classes and sail-away receptions.

Other Sanctuary Collection amenities include priority specialty restaurant reservations, and premium stateroom amenities.

The new Sanctuary Collection aboard Sun Princess includes three levels of stateroom types – Signature Collection Suites (80), Mini Suites (123), and Premium Deluxe Balconies (12).

“Our new Sanctuary Collection offers guests those ultra-private, tucked away spaces that rival any high-end resort and surpasses the offerings of comparable cruise lines featuring similar ship-within-a-ship amenities,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises. “With spacious and well-appointed accommodations, along with an array of premium extras and its exclusivity, our new Sanctuary Collection delivers the ultimate in access and indulgence to deliver an unparalleled experience.”

Sanctuary Collection staterooms go on sale today and are available starting with the Oct. 14, 2024 voyage on Sun Princess, and the Oct. 4, 2025 voyage on Star Princess. Guests who have booked as of April 23, 2024 and have already reserved Sanctuary Collection staterooms on either ship will receive the additional amenities outlined at no additional cost, excluding the Premier bundle.

The 177,500-ton, 4,300-guest Sun Princess offers an array of exciting new culinary and entertainment offerings, as well as luxurious staterooms and suites across a broad spectrum of categories. With the most balconies and sun decks on any Princess ship, guests can take in the sunshine and crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean and Caribbean from the comfort of their stateroom.
