Travel agents are an important part of the tourism industry. There are several different types of travel agents. The different types of travel agents vary according to the service they provide and the products that they offer. In this article I will teach you about the different types of travel agents and provide some examples too.

What’s a travel agent?

High street travel agents, business travel agents, call centre travel agents, internet travel agents, independent travel agents, multiple travel agents, miniple travel agents, types of travel agents: to conclude, further reading .

A travel agency is a private retailer that sells travel-related products and services to consumers. This includes package holidays as well as individual holiday elements such as hotel rooms, flight tickets and travel insurance.

Travel agents typically use global distribution systems (GDS). These systems enable to travel agent staff to receive real-time updates on availability and prices and to make bookings.

Travel agencies typically take a percentage of the overall fee that a consumer pays, known as commission. Commission rates vary depending on the product and/or service that is sold. It is for this reason that consumers will sometimes pay more for a holiday booked through a travel agency than they would if they booked it directly with the suppliers.

The different types of travel agents

There are four main types of travel agents in the travel and tourism industry: high street, business, callcentre and Internet. I will explain how each of these types of travel agents work below. BUT before you read on, hit play on my new YouTube video below!

High street travel agents have been around for a long time. Up until only a few years ago, high street travel agents were the most popular and themes common types of travel agents.

High street travel agents are typically found in major shopping areas, such as local high streets or in shopping malls.

High street travel agents typically have an area where holiday brochures are displayed and desks for consumers to sit at and talk than travel agent. Travel agent staff are generally very knowledgeable about the products and services thatchy are selling and offer high standards of customer service.

Many people continue to prefer house high street travel agents because they enjoy the face-to-face interaction.However, fewer and fewer people have been using travel agents in recent years. This has led to the closure of many high street travel agents.

High street travel agent examples: TUI, Hays Travel, Cooperative Travel

Business travel agents specialise in planning and booking travel for business purposes. Business tourism is one of the largest types of tourism . As such, this is an important type of travel agent.

Business travel agents do not always have a visible high street presence. Instead, they may be tucked away in office blocks or in quiet locations.This is because they do not tend to have walk-in business.

Business travel agents typically work with companies to organise business travel. Stays tend to be shorter than ordinary holidays. Business travel agents are popular because they help to save organisations timed money, given that they are able to quickly plan itineraries and book travel the best prices.

A call centre travel agent is a travel agent which is based in a call centre.

Call centre travel agents provide advice and guidance on booking your holiday via the telephone. Many major travel agencies will have call centres as wells high street shops.

Call centres have lower overheads than high street retailers because they do not have to pay premium prices for their offices- they have the flexibility to be based anywhere.

Some companies even choose to base their callcentres in developing countries, where wages and overhead costs are lower. However, this has been known to have a detrimental impact on the service offered due to language barriers and cultural differences.

Internet travel agents are the most popular types of travel agents nowadays. Many people prefer to book online.

The rise of the Internet travel agent has been so significant in recent years that there is now a lot of competition in the marketplace. This helps to drive down prices and to make holidays more affordable to customers.

Types of travel agent businesses

The types of travel agents can also be distinguished by their business model. There are three major business models that are used: independent, multiple, miniple. I will explain what each of these are below.

An independent travel agent is an agent is a unique company. There is only one branch and it is not associated with any other travel agency stores or companies.

Independent travel agents are commonly found in small towns and villages. They are usually locally-run businesses. Because of scales of economy, independent travel agents are often not able to compete with the lower prices offered by larger types of travel agents.

Independent travel agents do not necessarily need to have physical travel agency. There are many people who are running their own, successful travel agency businesses from home. These are Internet travel agents who are operating on an independent basis.

Since COVID-19, many organisations have reduced their business travel requirements, opting instead for Zoom calls and webinars facilitated by the shut-in economy . It is predicted that this change will be irreversible and therefore that the need for business travel agents will be permanently reduced.

A multiple travel agent is one which has a chain of branches. They are typically large organisations with a strong high street presence.

Multiple travel agents did have a monopoly of the market for many years. However, they have struggled to compete with the Internet travel agents, who have fewer overheads and are more conveniently located- on a consumer’s computer/smart device!

Miniple travel agents are travel agents that have several branches. These are usually mid-sized companies. They are often regional.

As you can see, the travel agency market has changed a lot in recent years. We have moved away from the traditional multiple on the high street towards an Internet-based approach when researching and booking our holidays. Nonetheless, there does continue to be a desire for travel agents, albeit largely online.

1) Independent Travel Agents  

Independent Travel Agents are self-employed or work for a small agency that is not affiliated with any larger network or organisation. They have more flexibility and autonomy in choosing their suppliers, products, and services. They can also offer more personalised and customised services to their customers, such as the following:

Independent Travel Agents can operate online or offline and can specialise in a particular destination, market segment, or type of Travel. But such specialisations require possessing Specialised Travel Agents Skills . 

However, Independent Travel Agents may also face some challenges, such as limited resources, higher costs, lower commissions, and less bargaining power with suppliers. They may also have less visibility and credibility in the market and may struggle to compete with larger and more established Travel Agents.

3) Visitor information centres  

Visitor information centres are Travel Agencies that provide information and advice to tourists at the destination. They are usually located at airports, train stations, bus terminals, city centres, or tourist attractions. 

Visitor information centres can help travellers with maps, brochures, guides, timetables, bookings, reservations, and local tips. These centres can also promote and sell local products and services, such as souvenirs, crafts, tours, events, and activities.  

Some examples of visitor information centres are Visit Britain and Tourism Australia. Visitor information centres have the advantage of being close to the customers and having firsthand knowledge of the destination. However, visitor information centres may also have limited resources, staff, and products and may depend on the seasonality and popularity of the destination. 

4) High street Travel Agents  

High street Travel Agents operate from physical shops or offices on the streets or shopping centres of towns and cities. High street Travel Agents can offer a range of products and services, such as the following: 

1) Flights 

2) Hotels 

3) Car rentals 

4) Tours 

5) Cruises 

6) Holiday packages 

They can also provide face-to-face consultation, customer service, and after-sales support. Some examples of high street Travel Agents are Thomas Cook, TUI, and Flight Centre.  

High street Travel Agents have the advantage of having a strong brand presence, a loyal customer base, and experienced staff. However, high street Travel Agents also face some challenges, such as high rent, overheads, staff costs, low margins and commissions, and competition from online Travel Agents and direct suppliers. 

5) Business Travel Agents  

Business Travel Agents specialise in arranging Travel products and services for corporate clients, such as companies, organisations, or government agencies. Business Travel Agents can offer products and services that meet the specific needs and preferences of business travellers, such as the following: 

1) Flexible fares 

2) Convenient schedules 

3) Premium seats 

4) Airport lounges 

5) Meeting rooms 

6) Corporate discounts 

Business Travel Agents can also provide account management, reporting, invoicing, and Travel policy compliance. Some examples of business Travel Agents are American Express Global Business Travel, BCD Travel, and CWT.

Call centre Travel Agents are professionals who operate from a centralised office or facility that handles a large volume of phone calls from customers. Call centre Travel Agents can offer and sell travel products and services over the phone, using a computerised reservation system and a script. Call centre Travel Agents can also provide customer service, support, and assistance. 

Some examples of call centre Travel Agents are Expedia, Priceline, and Travelocity. Call centre Travel Agents have the advantage of having lower costs, wider reach, and faster response than high street Travel Agents. However, they also face some challenges, such as high staff turnover, low customer satisfaction, and communication barriers.

They can also provide more personalised and customised services, such as the following:

Miniple Travel Agents have the advantage of having a flexible and adaptable business model, a loyal customer base, and competitive prices. However, they also face some challenges, such as limited resources, bargaining power, and brand awareness.

As we’ve hinted at before, group travel agent jobs can be much more hands-on because there are simply more people to account for. More often than not, group travel bookings relate to some sort of event — this could be a corporate conference, sports tourney (e.g. booking travel for a youth hockey league), family reunions… you get the idea.

It’s important to note that industry-wide, group travel doesn’t mean a single family or friends group (as counterintuitive as that may sound). Instead, group travel tends to refer to planning travel for at least eight to 12 people, and generally many more.

There’s really no limit to how specialized travel agent jobs can be. 

Some travel advisors only book travel to specific locations, some only book trips to theme parks (learn how to become a Disney travel agent ) and others only plan niche getaways, like honeymoons , destination weddings or LGTBQ+ travel .

Remote travel agent jobs are far more common and, coincidentally, much more in line with jobs where you can travel (since you’re not stuck at that brick-and-mortar office).

That’s not to say that in-person travel agent jobs aren’t still valuable. In big cities where the potential pool of clients is massive, in-person consultations can give you an edge with clients who prefer that sort of interaction.

Travelport agencies can use the optional “FXD” modifier from specified User-Supplied Itinerary Pricing tool inputs ($A) to exclude Blue Basic Fares as they have a Fare Type of “EOU”.  

What is the GDS format if I want to purchase the lowest Refundable fare for a Corporate Customer?

Note: Sabre recommends against using ‡XP since it searches for fares without a penalty fee filed but that doesn’t necessarily mean the fare is going to be refundable.  Sabre recommends: WPMPR-ANY‡AC* CORPID ‡NC

If you make an involuntary or voluntary itinerary change then all associated EMDs and AE must be refunded, as EMDs are not exchangeable. If the customer still wishes to purchase the ancillary on the new itinerary then a new EMD should be issued. If the itinerary does not change then all paid EMDs are non-refundable and the travel agent will be issued a debit memo for improperly refunded EMDs. If the customer purchased the ancillary at jetblue.com and an involuntary or voluntary itinerary change is made then they must contact JetBlue by chat or phone to process the EMD refund and issue a new one.

Will contracted Corporate Discounts still apply to the new fares?

Yes, any corporate traveler receiving a contracted JetBlue discount will continue receiving their discount across all Fare Options.

Can Nonrefundable fare options be refunded back to the original form of payment?

Do these options apply to the original ticket only, or do they carry over to any exchanged subsequent ticket.

SSR will carry over to your new and exchanged ticket since our exchange rules (CAT31) require the same fare type as on the original ticket. For example, if you purchased Blue Plus, all subsequent changes will be to another Blue Plus fare even if you've cancelled your trip and left your ticket in OPEN status. A Blue Plus ticket can only be exchanged/reissued for another Blue Plus ticket in the GDS.

Can I combine these fare options on a roundtrip or end-on-end basis?

Our combination rules allow travel agencies to combine some different fare options on the outbound and inbound portion of an itinerary.  In order to combine fares, the change and cancellations rule must be the same. So, for instance, Blue Basic is not combinable with other fare options due to its differing change/cancel policy.

In addition, end-on-end combinations, although technically possible if the travel agent is pricing each segment individually, are not permitted. The same fare option must apply to the entire direction.

Does this generate an EMD?

Each option is tied to a unique Brand ID with features built into the fare rule filings. A separate document is not generated, but specific SSR codes are added to your E-Ticket.

Are Even More Space seats included in one of these options?

No, Even More Space remains a standalone product available for purchase via jetblue.com or the GDS.

Qualifier/Modifier

Example command.

  • Based on avg. fleet-wide seat pitch of U.S. airlines.
  • Carry-on bags may not exceed 22" L (55.88 cm) x 14" W (35.56 cm) x 9" H (22.86 cm).
  • For Blue Basic customers, any carry-on bag brought to the gate (aside from a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you) will incur a fee and need to be checked. The fee is $65 (if it would be your 1st or 2nd checked bag) or $180 (if it’s your 3rd). Mosaic members, travelers to/from UK/Europe, travelers combining a Blue Basic fare with an Even More® Space seat (on all legs, if connecting), active U.S. military and unaccompanied minors may still bring a carry-on bag.
  • Personal items (like a purse, daypack or laptop bag) must fit under the seat in front of you and may not exceed 17" L (43.2 cm) x 13" W (33 cm) x 8" H (20.32 cm). An approved pet carrier counts toward your personal item allowance, however travelers who have added a pet to their Blue Basic booking may bring a personal item in addition to their pet carrier on board. 
  • Does not apply to same-day switches. Subject to fare difference and fare rules applicable on date of change. Funds will be in the form of a JetBlue travel credit, valid for 12 months from original ticketing date. Booked before Mar 8, 2023? See details on expiration date here. Same-day switches cannot be completed by agency.
  • Same-day switches cannot be completed by agency. Same-day switches can only be completed directly by JetBlue. Same-day switches can be made after midnight on day of travel. No fare difference applies. Mosaic members may make free same-day switches on all fares starting 24 hours prior to departure and the $75 fee is waived. Please note that same-day switches are not allowed on Blue Basic fares booked on or after Mar 18, 2024. 
  • No fee for Mosaic customers.

Tech company Amadeus has identified six traveler groups that have emerged over the past 15 years, and that continue to shape the market. Identifying which category or categories their clients fall into will give travel agents a starting point for offering destinations, accommodations and excursions that suit the traveler’s style.

Simplicity Searchers want a hassle-free experience from the time they decide to get away to the moment they return. They will leave all the research up to their trusted travel professional, and are well-suited to all-inclusive vacations.

How to Make These Clients Happy : When working with Simplicity Searchers, pay close attention to small details and plan more structured itineraries so that the client has nothing to do but relax and enjoy themselves.

Social Capital Seekers are heavily influenced by social media trends, even when it comes to travel. They value the opinions of their online peers, and will plan trips according to what will boost their “cultural capital” in the various social media communities.

How to Make These Clients Happy :  Travel agents will need to do a bit of research on the hottest hospitality and travel trends: where celebrities are vacationing, which resorts and restaurants are getting a lot of hype, etc.

Cultural Purists see travel as a means of immersing themselves in a different culture and completely separating themselves from their normal lives. These types of clients value authentic, off-the-beaten path experiences.

How to Make These Clients Happy : These travelers might require more creativity on your part, because the typical tourist agendas won’t satisfy their need for enrichment. Check with local experts in your client’s destination to find hidden gems that will really impress your client.

Ethical Travelers want to go where they can lend a hand, whether it be after a natural disaster or on a sustainable organic farm. These clients might look for ways to offset their carbon footprint and will favor brands are environmentally and socially conscious.

How to Make These Clients Happy : Keep in mind that Ethical Travelers will be more flexible about sacrificing comfort and luxury for more eco-friendly practices.

Obligation Meeters have a very clear goal for their trips. This includes business travelers, but also leisure travelers with a specific reason for visiting a destination. It might be to watch or compete in a sporting event, or to cross a certain activity off of their bucket list.

How to Make These Clients Happy : Travel Agents can show their value with Obligation Meeters by finding other experiences that fit with or augment their client’s main goal.

Reward Hunters travel to reward themselves with ‘must-have’ experiences and luxuries. Often they have a higher budget, and are looking for the ultimate ways to escape from the daily grind. Self-indulgence can take many forms: once-in-a-lifetime meals, super-exclusive spa retreats, and VIP parties, for example.

How to Make These Clients Happy : Whatever their interests, expect Reward Hunters to go all-out when it comes to travel. This means travel agents have to think big, and think outside the box!

Get certified if you can

Getting a certificate can be pricey and cost hundreds of dollars . So, if this option is not feasible for you, that's understandable. However, while certification isn't a requirement to become a travel agent, it can certainly help you throughout your career. Here are a few certificate programs to consider.

Certified Travel Counselor

This Travel Institute certificate requires at least five years of experience and a Certified Travel Association certification. This course focuses on marketing and building consumer relationships. CTC costs $550 to complete the course and $600 for the CTC Fast Track.

Certified Travel Industry Executive

CTIE is also backed by the Travel Institute and requires at least five years of field experience. This $550 program includes courses on travel business, marketing management, bookkeeping, and travel law.

ASTA Verified Travel Advisor

This certificate is given by the American Society of Travel Advisors and teaches applicants about the legalities of travel and how to solidify relationships with consumers. The nine-course program also focuses on ethical travel advising, agency law, and travel agency compliance.

For ASTA members, the course is $399, and for nonmember independent contractors, it's $598. Travel Advisor nonmembers pay the steepest price, which is $729, and $179 for recertification.

How much do travel agents make?

According to Indeed , travel agents make an average of $53,924, and salaries can range between $30,131 and $96,506, depending on where you live. But other factors can affect an agent's earning potential, like working independently instead of for a travel agency.

A travel agent's income also depends on their area of travel. The Hotel Agency Review 2023 report revealed that corporate and luxury travel agents earn much more than agents who focus on Disney and cruise trips.

Your experience level can also impact your earning potential, as agents who have worked in the field longer are typically viewed as more qualified.

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

As guests emerge from the pipe, vibrant scenery and exciting kinetic energy surround them as they are greeted by the familiar sights and sounds that they’ve experienced on their Nintendo game consoles – from the towering Mt. Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge : Guests are invited to join Team Mario and battle Team Bowser for the Golden Cup in this groundbreaking attraction that fuses augmented reality, projection mapping technology and elaborate environments to bring the fun of the Mario Kart video game series to life in a compelling ride-through experience.

The UN nuclear watchdog chief travels to Iran as its monitoring remains hampered

JERUSALEM (AP) — The head of the United Nations’ atomic watchdog traveled Monday to Iran, where his agency faces increasing difficulty in monitoring the Islamic Republic’s rapidly advancing nuclear program as tensions remain high in the wider Middle East over the Israel-Hamas war .

Rafael Mariano Grossi already has warned Tehran has enough uranium enriched to near-weapons-grade levels to make “several” nuclear bombs if it chose to do so. He has acknowledged the agency can’t guarantee that none of Iran’s centrifuges may have been peeled away for clandestine enrichment .

Those challenges now find themselves entangled in attacks between Israel and Iran, with the city of Isfahan apparently coming under Israeli fire in recent weeks despite it being surrounded by sensitive nuclear sites. Grossi is likely to attend an Iranian nuclear conference there while on his two-day trip to Iran.

In Tehran, Grossi and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian shook hands in front of journalists before going into a meeting Monday.

Grossi in a post on the social platform X after the meeting described proposing “a set of concrete practical measures for the revitalization” of a previous plan reached with Iran last year over inspections.

That 2023 statement included a pledge by Iran to resolve questions around sites where inspectors have questions about possible undeclared nuclear activity and Iran allowing the IAEA to “implement further appropriate verification and monitoring activities.” Grossi did not elaborate on the measures he proposed.

Grossi will travel to Isfahan on Tuesday before heading back to Vienna, where he plans to give an update to journalists.

Tensions have grown between Iran and the IAEA since then-President Donald Trump in 2018 unilaterally withdraw America from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers. Since then, Iran has abandoned all limits the deal put on its program and enriches uranium to 60% purity — near weapons-grade levels of 90%.

IAEA surveillance cameras have been disrupted, while Iran has barred some of the agency’s most experienced inspectors .

Meanwhile, Iranian officials have increasingly threatened they could pursue atomic weapons.

“For us, making the atomic bomb is easier than not building atomic bomb,” said Mahmoud Reza Aghamiri, the chancellor of Tehran Shahid Beheshti University and a specialist in nuclear physics.

Iranian media quoted Aghamiri acknowledging Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had previously said making an atomic bomb is forbidden.

“But if his fatwa and viewpoint is changed, we have ability to build atomic bomb, too,” Aghamiri added.

Aghamiri’s comments follow a drumroll of others by Iranian lawmakers, those in its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard and a former head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran suggesting Tehran could build the bomb.

Iranian diplomats for years have pointed to Khamenei’s preachings as a binding fatwa, or religious edict, that Iran wouldn’t build an atomic bomb.

“We do not need nuclear bombs. We have no intention of using a nuclear bomb,” Khamenei said in a November 2006 speech, according to a transcript from his office. “We do not claim to dominate the world, like the Americans, we do not want to dominate the world by force and need a nuclear bomb. Our nuclear bomb and explosive power is our faith.”

But such edicts aren’t written in stone. Khamenei’s predecessor, Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, issued fatwas that revised his own earlier pronouncements after he took power following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. And anyone who would follow the 85-year-old Khamenei as the country’s supreme leader could make his own fatwas revising those previously issued.

U.S. intelligence agencies and the IAEA say Iran had an organized military nuclear program up until 2003. The latest American intelligence community assessment says Iran “is not currently undertaking the key nuclear weapons-development activities necessary to produce a testable nuclear device.”

At the Isfahan conference Monday, Mohammed Eslami of Iran’s civilian nuclear arm insisted that cooperation with the IAEA and adherence to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty “tops the policies and strategy of the Islamic Republic” — despite the impeded inspections and threats to build an atomic weapon.

“We have 22% of global inspections,” Eslami said at one point. “This amount of inspection has never been done in a country throughout history.”

Meanwhile, tensions between Iran and Israel have hit a new high. Tehran launched an unprecedented drone-and-missile attack on Israel after years of a shadow war between the two countries reached a climax with Israel’s apparent attack on an Iranian consular building in Syria killed two Iranian generals and others.

Israel’s own nuclear weapons program , widely known by experts though never acknowledged by the country, didn’t deter Iran’s assault. And now experts increasingly suggest Iran could pursue the bomb itself after a major attack on it.

“With a tiny open attack on Iranian soil by the U.S. and Israel, I believe Iran will conduct its first atomic test,” analyst Saeed Leilaz said in April.
