Things To Do

Travel | can’t go to europe take these colorado trips instead..

Fire pits at the Patio House of C Lazy U House in Granby.

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted just about every facet of our lives. Chief among them: our ability to travel, especially internationally.

Europe, in particular, does not want American visitors right now (and, honestly, we can’t blame them). This means that if you were planning to take one of Denver International Airport’s handy non-stop flights to destinations like London, Paris or Frankfurt, you’re out of luck for the foreseeable future.

There’s never been a better time to plan a Colorado road trip and check out some of the state’s destinations you’ve been meaning to visit, but just haven’t gotten around to yet. Before you hop in the car, however, be sure to check out your destination’s coronavirus rules, regulations and restrictions (and actually follow them!) so that we can all travel safely and responsibly.

Don’t get discouraged by your dashed European travel plans. Instead, set your sights on these Colorado vacation ideas that will make you feel like you’re traveling in Europe.

European fall menu at C Lazy U Ranch

Take an extended tour of Europe’s mountain regions via your tastebuds with a visit to C Lazy U Ranch in Granby. Executive chef Cory Untch created the ranch’s fall menu with European travel (or, rather, the lack thereof) in mind, conducting extensive research about the foods that are popular in northern Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France and Germany.

And this isn’t your typical “dude ranch” cuisine, either; far from it. Untch is an accomplished chef who has trained in kitchens at The Little Nell in Aspen and at Ritz-Carlton hotels all over the country, among others.

“People can’t really travel right now,” said 37-year-old Untch, who began leading the ranch’s culinary program in January. “With everything that’s happening, we want to try to bring them that experience through food. Even if you’ve been there before, maybe we can make a dish that strikes a note with you, that brings you back to that time and place.”

On the menu, you’ll find dishes using polenta, risotto, osso buco, house-made pasta, sauerkraut dumplings, fondue and more. Untch plans to play up fontina and pecorino cheeses, as well as meats like prosciutto, mortadella and guanciale.

Since all meals are included in your stay at the ranch, you don’t have to be bashful about asking for seconds, either. And if you’re the type of person who likes to earn your dinner, the ranch has plenty of activities to help you work up a sweat — horseback riding, hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, tennis, archery, hatchet-throwing, a ropes course, swimming and volleyball, just to name a few.

German Bauhaus style in Aspen

White settlers flocked to Aspen in the early 1870s in search of valuable silver buried underground. And even after the silver market collapsed in the early 1890s, many Aspenites still saw value in this beautiful place. Among them: Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke.

In addition to helping Aspen become a world-renowned skiing destination, the Paepckes are responsible for much of Aspen’s cultural and artistic prowess. Case in point: In 1949, the Paepckes founded the Aspen Institute, a place where people could discuss big ideas, art, philosophy, human challenges and great writing.

They commissioned Austrian-born designer and architect Herbert Bayer to create the institute’s campus in the distinctive Bauhaus style, a very specific form of modernist German architecture and design from the 1920s and 1930s.

Today, a visit to the institute, which is also a hotel and resort, is like taking a trip back in time and a trip overseas. The style is so unique that you’ll feel like you’ve left Colorado and touched down in another country — no, seriously. There are bold primary colors everywhere, sculpted landscape mounds called earthworks and tons of Bauhaus-style sculptures and art pieces everywhere. It’s funky and awesome.

During your stay, you can take a self-guided art tour or call ahead to ask about reserving a socially distanced guided tour for your group.

Inn-to-inn hiking in Estes Park

If you’ve ever dreamed of doing a hut-to-hut hiking trip in the Alps or the Dolomites, you’re in luck: You don’t have to travel to Europe to get a similar experience. In fact, you don’t have to travel far at all.

After hiking extensively in England, France, the Netherlands and elsewhere, David and Phebe Novic fell in love with long-distance trekking. They realized they could link together several well-known trails in Rocky Mountain National Park to create a long, continuous route. Even better? They discovered interesting lodging options along the way. Thus, they created the Walter Tishma Way, named for the Bosnian-born man who volunteered at the national park and climbed Longs Peak more than 100 times.

You can book a self-guided inn-to-inn trip along the Walter Tishma Way through Footpaths of the World, the Novics’ hiking company (they also organize self-guided day trips, an inn-to-inn trip near Winter Park and a hiking excursion to France). The 42-mile trip starts in Estes Park and ends in Allenspark, with lodging along the way. You’ll hike 7 to 11 miles each day, though the total number of nights you spend on the trip varies based on the season and your preferences. Your luggage is transferred from inn to inn so all you really need to bring is a backpack.

The trip is self-guided, or you can hire a private guide for some or all of the days.

“It’s addicting,” said Phebe Novic. “It’s very fun to be tired, walking down the trail and looking for that lodge. And when you walk through the door, unload your pack and sit down, take off your boots and have a cold beer, there’s nothing better. Your luggage is there. A hot shower, dinner and a comfy bed await.”

Bavarian architecture in Vail

You’ve probably been to Vail before — to ski or ride, to hike, to mountain bike. But have you ever stopped to really look at the architecture of this mountain town?

You see, it’s no accident that Vail looks like it was picked up straight from Bavaria and plopped down in Colorado. Pete Seibert, one of the ski resort’s co-founders, was a member of the famous 10th Mountain Division of soldiers who specialized in skiing and mountaineering during World War II.

Seibert and other soldiers (some 15,000 of them!) trained at Camp Hale, located between Vail and Leadville. Though not identical, the alpine topography was good practice for the Alps of northern Italy and Austria.

After the war ended, Seibert returned to Colorado to heal from injuries he suffered in battle. Later, inspired by Vail’s epic landscape, Seibert and his friend Earl Eaton decided to create a world-class ski resort here. But they wanted the similarities with the Alps to extend beyond the mountains, so they modeled the resort’s village after Bavarian architecture.

Just spending a few days here immersed in the architecture will help you pretend you’re actually on a vacation in Europe, we promise. But if that’s not enough, you can take it even further. There are a number of Vail restaurants, hotels and shops owned by Austrian and German families, such as Sonnenalp Vail, which was founded in 1979 by the Faessler family and modeled after its sister property in Ofterschwang, Germany.

Unfortunately, Vail’s Oktoberfest festivities are canceled this year, but you can still enjoy plenty of fall activities in Vail.

Swiss ice climbing in Ouray

This one is practically a no-brainer, since Ouray is called the “Switzerland of America” for its location among the craggy peaks of the San Juan Mountains. Also like Switzerland (and other cold-weather European destinations), Ouray is home to some truly incredible ice climbing.

Even if you’ve never climbed before, you can still take advantage of the Ouray Ice Park, a free, public park with more than 100 ice and mixed climbs. There’s even a special kids’ wall. You can rent your ice climbing gear from many outfitters in town and even hire an experienced guide to show you the ropes (pun intended). Weather-dependent, the park is on track to open in mid-December this year.

The nonprofit park is funded completely by donations, so consider chipping in a few bucks or becoming an ice park member so that this Colorado gem can continue to exist and thrive into the future.

The similarities to Switzerland don’t stop with climbing, either. Afterward, soak your aching bones in the Ouray Hot Springs, which is reminiscent of the many Swiss outdoor thermal baths and spas.

Here's How to Plan Your Very First Trip to Europe, According to a Professional Traveler

Heading to Europe for the very first time? We've got some advice for you.

colorado to europe trip

Whether you study abroad , backpack solo, or go with a group for your first trip to Europe, it's an experience that will change your life — and alter your perspective in all the best ways — forever. Even if you visited the continent with your parents as a kid, your first "solo" adventure to Europe as a young adult promises to reward you with rich memories. From digging into freshly baked pizza in Italy to picnicking beneath the Eiffel Tower with a still-warm baguette, it's a trip filled with experiences you'll talk about for the rest of your life.

Though I had visited Italy with my parents as a kid, my own first adventure to Europe as a young adult was in 2015. I was 21, newly married, and heartbroken at the loss of my father four months earlier. I had been studying British literature and European history in my college classes and was eager to make real-world connections to my curriculum. In preparation, my husband and I watched every Rick Steves video on YouTube and movies like Under the Tuscan Sun , Midnight in Paris , Notting Hill , and Eat, Pray, Love . The spring semester of my junior year ended, and we set off with nothing but backpacks containing a few (and I do mean a few) sets of clothes, a budget of about $100 per day, and five short weeks to see it all.

Besides opening our eyes, pushing us to our limits, and expanding our perspectives in ways that nothing else could, that trip ignited in us a shared passion for travel — and for encouraging others to do the same. Read on for tips for planning your first trip to Europe like a pro.

Get Around With a Eurail Pass

Do you need a Eurail pass to get around Europe? Maybe not, but I devoted a large chunk of our shoestring budget to it on my first trip, and I've bought one for every extended trip I've taken to Europe since then — even now that I've hit the ancient age of 28 and no longer qualify forEurail's discounted youth pricing — so that should tell you something.

Most of Europe is well connected via a vast rail network spanning the continent. A Eurail pass — available exclusively to non-Europeans — makes it hassle-free to hop between countries and even navigate regional trains. Depending on your travel plans, you can purchase passes for specific countries or regions and choose whether you need unlimited use or a set number of travel days.

Remember that once you're in Europe, hops between major cities are often surprisingly low-price (I've seen flights for as little as $6), but often a train is the best choice when you factor in time, convenience, price, and the chance to watch the world go by from your window. Splurge on first-class passes , and you'll always have a comfortable seat.

Plan Your Trip Geographically

Make a list of all your must-hit places, then look at where they fall on a map — connect the dots, and you have your route. Maybe you start in Spain and work your way east, or fly into London, take the Chunnel to Paris , and work your way down to Italy. Whatever you choose, ensure that your route makes sense geographically so you don't waste time (or money) crisscrossing the continent.

Keep Seasons in Mind

Europe is a large continent covering a variety of climates. It may seem obvious, but if you're planning a summer trip, don't expect to frolic in fields of Dutch tulips (that happens in the spring) or ski the Austrian slopes (that would be a winter thing). And as enchanting as the European Christmas markets look on Instagram, don't be disappointed when you put two and two together and realize that they'll only make it to your feed if you're going to Europe in November or December.

An Italian summer is nothing short of sweltering and ice-cold AC isn't a given, so if you're planning to cover all of Rome on foot at high noon, you may want to rethink that. (I learned this the hard way and damn near had a heat stroke.) A midday siesta is common in countries like Spain and Italy for a reason, so do as the locals do and take the summer weather into account before you overexert yourself.

Book in Advance

A PSA for type-A travelers like me: You don't have to have your entire trip planned out before leaving home. (I had a down-to-the-minute itinerary mapped out for my type-B husband and me on our first venture to Europe, and he almost left me as I dragged him from museum to walking tour to restaurant reservation and back again.) Part of the fun — especially if you have a Eurail pass — is going where the wind blows you and deciding what appeals to you upon arrival.

Pro tip: Taking a bus tour on your first day in a destination is a great way to get the lay of the land and cover a lot of ground quickly (without exhausting yourself).

Make a general timeline and book your departure flight from the USA to Europe before you leave home, but perhaps wait until you've hopped the pond to book your flight back. You may decide to stay longer in a particular country or run out of time to make it all the way to Portugal, where you originally intended to fly out of. Create a general outline, but leave some of your trip open and stay flexible.

The one thing you may want to do in advance is reserve hotels, hostels, and Airbnbs because they can fill up during the popular summer months. That's why it's helpful to have a general idea of where you'll be and when — just don't cling to your plan at the expense of a spontaneous sidetrack or two.

What to Bring to Europe

Start working on your packing list a few months beforehand. What you bring will vary depending on destinations, length of trip, and your fussiness level, but there are a few non-negotiables.

Don't leave home without:

  • Your passport
  • Converters for European outlets (both UK and EU, as needed)
  • A credit card and/or a debit card for getting cash out of an ATM (you'll get a better rate this way than doing it through a currency-exchange counter)
  • COVID-era items such as your vaccine card, printed copies of your negative COVID test results (if required) , and a few self-test kits
  • A secure envelope to hold all of these important documents (including a few color copies of your passport) in one place
  • An international plan added to your phone (unless you're a T-Mobile customer)
  • Global Entry (not necessary, but a definite plus when you return to the USA)

You'll also find life a lot easier with the Google Translate app and the XE currency conversion app on your smartphone. Before you depart, download the countries you'll be visiting to ensure offline availability. The Been app , where you can track which countries you've visited and how much of the world you've seen, is another fun app for travelers, especially on a trip like this where you'll be checking off a lot of countries.

And a note on packing light : You'll need nothing more than a backpack and a carry-on, max. Trust me. (There are laundry rooms at every hostel and laundromats in every city.)

Where to Go on Your First Trip to Europe

If you only have time or the budget to see a few places, start with the basics . You've likely learned about major cities like London, Paris , and Rome since you can remember — now's the time to see them through your own eyes.

Once you have the must-hit places on your itinerary, plan some additional stops according to your interests. There's a lot to see in Italy outside of Rome — I'd include Venice, Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast, Florence, and the surrounding Tuscan wine country on any trip to Italy, especially for first-timers.

Maybe you've been digging into your ancestry and found that you have Hungarian heritage like I have — Budapest was a shoo-in for us this summer — or perhaps you've always dreamed of hiking the Swiss Alps, clinking glasses in a German beer hall, or soaking up the sun in the Greek Isles .

Maybe you want to visit Poland and pay your respects at Auschwitz — I consider this sobering, heart-wrenching experience a must — or try every waffle you come across in Belgium. You can do it all if you have enough time, but start by arranging a shortlist with your top priorities and then tack on additional destinations if you have space.

These are some of the best places to visit in Europe, but the best destinations for you will depend on your interests, priorities, and goals. If you're purely on "vacation" with no remote work or school obligations, two to three days in each place should suffice, but if you can't devote your full attention each day to exploring, then you'll want a little extra time in each city to do it justice.

How to Plan a Trip to Europe, Rookie Mistakes + Top Cities to Visit

How to plan a trip to Europe

Europe is a picturesque, historic, and magical place in so many ways. From the cobblestone streets of Paris, to the Swiss Alps of Switzerland, to the hot springs of Iceland – Europe holds a plethora of climates, languages, cuisines, and cultures that coexist side by side.

Because it is so vast and diverse, it can be daunting to plan for. Use this guide to get a quick feel for how to plan a trip to Europe, how to build the best itinerary ever, and common mistakes to avoid along the way!

How to Plan a Europe Trip

1. determine your itinerary.

Every time we go to Europe, we struggle to determine our itinerary. This is because the possibilities feel ENDLESS.

It starts as “Let’s fly into Berlin, then go to Copenhagen and Brussels.” Then it quickly turns into, “Oh, we’re close to France! AND we could hop over to Spain! But then we’re so close to Portugal, we may as well take a daytrip to Morocco.” And the list goes on.

Here’s how to ensure you’re planning a realistic trip that won’t lead to exhaustion, burn-out, or rushing around the whole time.

Firstly, consider your interests, goals, and priorities –

  • Do you want to see museums and ancient ruins? Or shop along the Champs-Élysées?
  • Do you want to taste your way through Italy? Or watch a symphony in Mozart’s hometown of Vienna?
  • Do you want to sunbathe on a Mediterranean beach? Or see the Northern lights of Finland?

Get specific to outline your dream vacation and really ask yourself what that would look like.

Determine your itinerary

2. Establish a trip budget

The next step will be determining your budget. This will involve knowing if you plan to be a backpacker, standard traveler, or 5-star luxury guest. Let’s break this down by core factors like hotels, meals, and activities:

  • Hostels – 15-40€ per night
  • Standard Room – 100-300€ per night
  • Luxury rooms – 500-1,000+€ per night
  • Budget Traveler – 5-50€ per day
  • Standard Traveler – 50-150 € per day
  • Luxury Traveler – 100-500€ per day
  • General Excursions – Free-50€ per tour, per person
  • Skip-The-Line Excursions – 50-150€ per tour, per person
  • Private Guided Excursions – 200-1,000€ per tour, per person

Establish a trip budget

3. Find the best city to fly in and out of

Once you’ve visualized your dream trip and have an idea of your budget, you can now find the flight paths that correlate.

Here are some tips related to booking flights:

  • Set a Google Flight Alert – Find the dates and region you are interested in, toggle the bar under the search area that says ‘Track Flights.’ This will send you email alerts every time the price is low!
  • Check Hopper , Skyscanner , and other Flight Sites – These often have great deals for flights, hotels, car rentals, etc.
  • Consider Open-Jaw Flights – These fly into one destination, and fly out of another (for example, flying into Berlin and out of Lisbon, instead of racing back to Berlin for the flight home if you’ve already traveled from east to west). An open-jaw flight would be useful if you want to travel from one point to another without scrambling back-and-forth. Round-trip from a single location may look cheaper at a glance, but factor in train rides and hotels for the journey back to starting point A, it may not be a deal.

Find the best city to fly in and out of

4. Outline a rough itinerary

Plan your trip geographically and then look into the best routes of arrival. Think of this like a game of Connect the Dots! Try to focus on one region (the Baltic, Mediterranean, Greek Islands, etc.) to determine the easiest way to navigate your trip.

Funny enough, roadblocks may help! On our recent trip to Europe, we wanted to stop in Marseille but found there were limited transport options from our starting point, overpriced tickets, or no easy way to get there. Ruling locations out by default has greatly helped us to finalize itineraries.

Here are sample itineraries that feel realistic and DOABLE for popular European areas:

  • London > Paris > Amsterdam
  • Budapest > Vienna > Prague
  • Oslo > Stockholm > Copenhagen
  • Santorini > Mykonos > Athens
  • Blue Lagoon > Snæfellsnes > Golden Circle > Reykjavik
  • Rome > Florence > Cinque Terre > Amalfi > Venice
  • Lisbon > Barcelona > Monte Carlo > Zurich
  • Tuscany > Zurich > Paris

Outline a rough itinerary

5. Research how to get around Europe

There are countless ways to get around Europe.

Instead of wasting money on expensive taxis to get around Europe, utilize the extensive network of affordable trains, buses, metros, rideshares, and ferries available to you.

You can use Rome2Rio.com to find the best routes that may take you from planes to trains to automobiles.

A Eurorail Pass is a solid investment if you are hitting many cities. It is available exclusively to non-Europeans as a simplified means for transnational tourism. Hop-on-hop-off tours are a bit touristy and cheesy, but they’re also a fun and fast way to get a lay-of-the-land in bigger cities. Islands like Greece are the easiest to cruise through if you’re open to waking up somewhere new every morning, MSC is a popular European cruise line with unique itineraries.

Remember that once you’ve arrived in Europe, getting around is quite affordable. It’s the trip overseas that will hurt your wallet a bit. The metro will typically cost 1-2€ per person, train rides can cost as little as 10-20€, and flights are frequently less than 50€ between countries!

Research how to get around Europe

6. Consider travel time (potentially DAYS!)

A rough estimate of travel time is that it will take about 4-6 hours between cities, or about a half day. But some regions are further apart and may require a 10+ hour trip. Use overnight train rides and buses to avoid double-paying for an accommodation – two birds, one stone.

Also, leave plenty of room between connections because things aren’t always on-time in Europe . It’s a relaxed way of life and respecting time is not a cultural priority. Give yourself ample space to find the location, eat, relax, and arrive safely early for any reservations. Remember: Transits may come early, they may come late, but they will definitely leave without you!

Pro Tip : Utilize luggage storage . Most accommodations do not allow you to drop off your bags until late afternoon. You don’t want to be lugging around heavy suitcases. Luckily, there are tons of baggage storage facilities and lockers.

Look for websites like Stow Your Bags . as well as major train stations like Roma Termini that typically provide luggage rooms or nearby businesses that will hold your bags while you adventure.

Consider travel time (potentially DAYS!)

7. Book Travel Insurance for Europe

Many wanderlusters aren’t aware of the importance of travel insurance. We find it too crucial to travel without, covering you in case of flight delays, cancellations, baggage loss, COVID evacuations, medical emergencies, hospital transits, and more.

Keep in mind that your domestic provider does NOT generally follow you overseas , you don’t want to end up paying out of pocket if something bad were to happen. Even something as small as a broken wrist could turn into a disastrous bill, so we play it safe by using Faye Insurance for all of our travel protection needs.

They have unique plan add-ons like ‘cancel for any reason’ that give you flexibility and peace of mind. We’ve also found that they pay out faster than most any travel insurance providers we’ve used, sending you cash up-front for any claims instead of a lengthy reimbursement process.

Book Travel Insurance for Europe

8. Know the Best Time of Year to Visit Europe

Europe is a huge continent with 8 climates types, ranging from extremes like marine to subarctic. You can’t always expect flower fields in the summer or ski slopes in the winter, so it’s best to research utilizing your precise roadmap and budget.

Flight rates may be half as much in the off-season , which leads to fewer crowds, lower hotel prices, cheaper food, and other great benefits.

But! It’s also usually colder, rainier, and not as idyllic of a time for exploring.

Conversely, summer in America is typically when tourists flock to Europe (June to August for school break, summer vacation, etc.), but it is also sweltering in some parts of the continent. If you don’t want to be melting like an ice cream cone in huge lines that wrap buildings in direct scorching UV rays – consider not visiting during peak season. If you do visit during these busy months, take the heat into account, even the Spaniards do a midday siesta to avoid overexerting themselves.

We believe the best seasons to visit Europe are autumn and spring . Both will result in fewer crowds and greater affordability, in addition to not being freezing cold or boiling hot.

Visiting in September, October, and November will be ideal for things like afternoon drinks at Munich’s Oktoberfest and long scenic hikes in the Camino Del Santiago of Spain.

Visiting in March through May will be best to see the tulips blooming in Lisse Netherlands, enjoy outdoor meals at rooftop cafes, and meet the locals who emerge from their tourist-driven recluse.

Know the Best Time of Year to Visit Europe

9. Finalize your itinerary

Lastly, fine-tune your plans. Get guidebooks and language-translation apps. Ask your well-traveled friends for advice on the must-sees.

Check that your time conversions are correct to properly book your accommodations (noting that most flights from the United States will likely arrive a day after the departure date).

Create a Google doc or spreadsheet to keep track of your planning, reservation numbers, directions, and recommendations – something you can access from anywhere on your smartphone. Download these files or set them to accessible offline in case you do not have great reception in Europe (more on phone plans below!)

Planning ahead will help you make fewer decisions in the moment which will be of great relief to you.

Finalize your itinerary

Avoid Rookie Mistakes in European Travel

Some of these common fails include:

Not bringing a neck wallet – Dont carry a ton of cash or essentials like credit cards and passports without a neck wallet. This way, you won’t stand out like a vulnerable tourist or be flashing around euros to potential pickpockets.

Not using a VPN in Europe – VPNs protect your WiFi connection and ensure you’re not exposing passwords, credit card numbers, and private data to potential hackers. NordVPN will add a layer of encryption when joining public networks at cafes, airports, Airbnbs, etc.

Not booking excursions in advance – Public service announcement, you don’t want to be turned away from popular attractions because they’re fully booked. Use Get Your Guide to book the best excursions based on your location! We recommend the skip-the-line option to save yourself time and energy.

Not setting up an international phone plan – Your provider will love to charge you an arm and a leg for roaming fees. Either set up an international plan before you leave or purchase a European SIM card to have an international phone number while you’re overseas.

Not bringing a universal power adapter – Don’t risk frying your electronics or being unable to charge your phone. This adapter works in 100+ countries and comes with a lifetime replacement guarantee.

Not taking advantage of the public transit – Utilize the budget-friendly options at your disposal! The public transit system is very well developed in Europe and truly the easiest way to get around. Save your taxi money for food and beverage expenses.

Not packing comfortable shoes – We bring along hiking shoes , rainboots , and Crocs that are water-resistant and supportive for the medieval cobblestone streets.

Not converting your cash beforehand – At some banks, euros will need to be ordered or retrieved from the main bank location. Plan ahead and leave at least a week before your trip for currency conversions.

Not checking the business hours – Always research closure times or if renovations are being done. Lots of things are regularly closed in Europe and you don’t want to show up to an empty building. Note that almost all central European nations will close businesses on Sundays (France, Germany, Poland, etc.), and many of Europe’s best museums are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Traveling as a female solo traveler without protection – We are all-about solo travel and female independence! But I’ve personally run into some scary situations as a woman alone in a foreign place. Keep a self-defense alert on you at all times that has a built-in location detector, siren, and emergency alert.

Overbooking – If you find one major takeaway in this article: Avoid trying to see everything at once. Time will slip away quickly if you’re cramming too much in one vacation and you will be drained from 10+ hour flights, jet lag, overnight train rides, bus rides to your neighborhood, and so on. Not to mention trying to navigate in a foreign language. Make it as simple on yourself as you possibly can!

Overpacking – Keep things light so you’re not struggling between airports, trains, and buses. Lots of European terrains are uphill and heavy suitcases would be a mistake. Plus, you want to leave some room to do a little shopping! We recommend bringing one checked bag and one carry-on, then this packable “just in case” bag counts as your personal item for the trip home. Fill it up with authentic goods and treats that your friends and family will love.

Top Cities to Visit

If it’s not your first time visiting Europe, go off-the-beaten path to find lesser-known regions and hidden gems like Sorrento in Italy, Marseille in France, Porec in Croatia, etc.

If it is your first time in Europe, we recommend starting with these major hot-spots like London, Madrid, and Rome, saving the smaller towns for future trips when you will have a better idea of where you want to return to.

Top 5 airlines flying to Europe

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

Horrible. This was not first class. This was a connecting flight whi h was late. My original flight never came. I hated the fact that delta gave me a connecting flight from New York to Orlando Florida. No meals and the television screens were not working. There wasn't even any power to charge your phones. This is NOT FIRST CLASS DELTA!!! Do better next time!

This flight was ridiculous. I had to have a connecting flight from New York to orlando Florida??? The flight left late and because it was a short flight there was no first class amenities. I had one alcohol drink. The flight crew was fine, but it sure did not feel like first class. Delta to me dropped the ball by giving me a connecting flight. By the time we got to Raleigh we would have missed the next flight. Lucky for me the flight never came so now I was stuck waiting for a later flight that came in late also.

Our flight was delayed in Atlanta. The staff could have gave us an explanation for the delay and how long it would be.

I liked the ease of checking in, luggage check in, wheel chair assistance, boarding and flight.

On my way home I had a layover. The flight from ATL to CLT was amended 5x while I was waiting. I could have driven home sooner. Overall from Dallas, Tx to Charlotte, NC I started my trip at 4:30pm, I didn’t get home until past midnight. I know things happen, but 5x to make me run back and forth in an airport from different terminals is excessive. I also upgraded to comfort + , I didn’t feel it was worth it. There was no benefit

On my way home I had a layover. The flight from ATL to CLT was amended 5x while I was waiting. I could have driven home sooner. They did a fine job. Can't wait to use Delta in the future.

There was a loud squeaky sound the whole time we were flying.

Had a broken tray in business class. Crew just shrugged it off.

Due to one crew member not showing up to work, our flight was significantly delayed causing us to miss our connecting flight in Houston to Mississippi causing us to be delayed by more than 6 hours and missing our event all together. Very disappointing. All because ONE crew member called in sick. United did grant us a $15 meal voucher, which was a small but appreciated concession that I wasn’t able to use because I ordered my lunch and paid for it before applying the concession, and the staff said it was too late to use it. Ugh! We also had a TWO delay coming back from Mississippi, but that was on American Airlines and it was due to weather, so not their fault. Anyway, not at all impressed with United’s handling of our flight and the HUGE disappointment of missing our important family event for our 90 year old mother. All that money and all that stress and emotions for nothing. Having to wait the hour to bring an employee from LAX seemed like something that should not have happened. Why don’t you have a local back-up? Santa Ana is not a little airport in a rural area.

Flight delayed from Cape Town to Washington then got diverted to miami and in miami we had to fend for ourselves , im still trying to get to Shreveport now

delay several times and wait extra long to board. no entertainment service because there are problem for some rows. always encounter some delays for the last flight of the day.

I just wrote a text which was supposed to be for the flight from Denver to spokane not Frankfurt to Denver.

On time every leg of the journey and exceptional staff at counter, gate, and on board. I haven’t travelled in US for a long time and was genuinely surprised how pleasant this was.

Hated every minute of it. This flight should have only taken 1.5hrs but was delayed over 10hours. Now I am being told I cannot be compensated or refunded my ticket price or extra leg room, which I purchased but did not receive, because the airline is throwing the blame on the 3rd party I purchased tickets through and 3rd party putting the blame on airline. No one wants to help. They received their money and that's all they care about. Im going on 3 days of still trying to get to my final destination, had to cancel car rental, car insurance and hotel. Currently staying in airport until hotels open up. Thank you Lufthansa, Kayak, Underpricer and United for making this trip the worst ever.

The delays (5 hrs) were a comedy of errors, and the multiple safety issues encountered were very concerning.

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Crew was great and did their best to make us comfortable and captain came out at the beginning to announce why the flight was delayed, weather situation up ahead, and kept us updated throughout the flight.

the flight from Tampa departed with a delay. The food on board was poor, usually on international airlines alcoholic beverages are offered free of charge , but here it was for a fee, the cutlery was wooden, there were no hot drinks (tea, coffee). Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures of the portions of food, but it wouldn't have been enough for a child either. And in the future, I will try not to use the services of this airline

Just get Economy Plus for international flights, so worth it the extra room, bigger seats…

This flight is frequently delayed. The connections seemingly are more frequently delayed. I’ve missed connections as a result twice on the same route to charlotte then Charleston. Final destination arrival has been the next day, twice in a row. No pilots, no crew. Too many excuses. Unfortunately, my days with American are over.

Entertainment was okay not because anything was wrong but it is a short flight so having no wifi is annoying but understandable. Crew was outstanding as usual

It was spectacular. I had basic Economy and was given so much space and their seats lean back so far. Staff was superb, food was superb, everything was superb, Finnair is Fantastic.

Those seats were way too narrow. I had the middle seat, one person was a very skinny person and we still couldn’t avoid touching each other anytime one of us moved. The other person was larger and we were basically sitting in each others lap the entire flight. There was zero entertainment. The flight was long enough to justify tvs, but no. Gotta sit there in your infant seat and twiddle your thumbs.

The Flight attendant had an attitude and didn't allow anyone any time to prepare for landing despite being absent throughout the entire trip

Flight boarded without pilots. Sat on plane for 3 hrs. after over an hour late boarding. Plane never took off. Had to deplane near midnight. Line for rebooking was 3 hours + long. I had to leave.

The flight was great but board was a nightmare. The gate was changed 4 times during the layover period

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Cold air blew constantly on my legs almost making me numb.

Horrible experience. Nothing to give to kids to keep them entertained.

I think I have bruises on my kneecaps. Do the seats have to be so close together these days? And if they are so close they really shouldn’t recline. I think when the gentleman in front of me reclined, the back of his head was on my chin. That being said the crew were always caring and polite, and the flight was on time and very safe. So I’m grateful for that.

I always try to book flights that don’t charge for baggage. Yet I was charged $75 for this flight.

Trouble keeps changing the time and I was booked different flight without knowing it was bad experience

I dropped my wallet under my seat on this flight with all of my money and credit card. I requested to be able to go back and retrieve it but Lufthansa denied my request. I went to the Customer Services and they called Lost and Found but I was told nothing found would be turned in until around 12:00pm. My next flight was leaving so I was unable to check to see if my wallet was turned in. I will never fly with Lufthansa again.

My concern is with Flight: 441 IAH-FRA I was very cramped in my seat and the person in front of me was reclined. I pulled my wallet out of my purse and when finished I did my best to cram it back into my purse. Our flight was very delayed and we were rebooked twice and lots of airport time. As I got off the flight I noticed that I had dropped my wallet( containing all my credit & debit bank cards + 240 US dollars & 240 Euros. I spoke to customer service & Lost &Found. I was denied access to look on the plane. Therefore I have been without money and given no help. Paula Bjork 503.545.6698

Dinner was good by air travel standards but breakfast was too light and heavy on carbs/sugar.

Used to love Lufthansa, but Rowe are too close together in Economy and passengers are allowed to recline their seats so far back it is impossible for those behind them to even reach for carry-on essentials during flight - except for meal service when flight attendants ask for seat backs to be raised, we can’t sleep on planes so this flight was most uncomfortable ever! Rod Rose

So far so good. I missed my flight because of the Lufthansa diversion. United helped me to figure out how to get accommodations from Lufthansa for my long layover. They help me book appropriate onward flight.

Horrible crowding on the seats, headphones provided did not fit or work in the entertainment center, seriously the most uncomfortable flight I have taken in a LONG time. The people in front of me were literally 5 inches from my face the entire flight. Did they change their seats recently? I remember it being tight but wow this was a whole new level. Also I am a 5'3" small woman so I can't even imagine a larger person dealing with that for 11 hrs.

In economy and food was ok, but with limited leg space (and I was in a 2 seat configuration) it was difficult to eat with a tiny seat tray. I spilt wine on my trousers. First time on British Air (I usually fly Turkish Air) and in a 777. Heathrow was pleasant but changing terminals awkward.

Starting with the flight Cairo to London the plain was so poor no entertainment at all uncomfortable seats although it’s 5 hours long, then an American airline plain took me from London to Miami it was a bad experience the crew most of flight time not available and they asked us to help our selves for any snacks if we need. From Miami to London actually was perfect flight with a huge plain and perfect crew but from London to Cairo was horrible plain with stiff fixed seats not movable no entertainment or wi fi very poor Menu which is unacceptable for a business class

I've done hundreds of flights in my life, and this flight was one of the best I've ever taken, From beginning to end, everything went smoothly, professionally, and with a smile and friendly attitude from all employees I interacted with. The food was delicious (and free), as were the drinks. There was just a genial and effective way in the way that British Airways organized the flight -that reminded of days in the 70's, 80's, and 90's, when flying was a fun, and exciting adventure. I enjoyed and had confidence in the abilities of the flight crew, I'll be flying British Airways several more times this summer. Thank you so much for the great experience! Cheryl Olso

My baggage did not arrived with me. Took 3 days to get it after so may calls and follow up

Terrible! I missed my flight to my final destination and British airlines and American Airlines keep pointing fingers on each other’s. Nobody wants to take responsibility

Terrible. Flight was 3 hours delayed and I missed my other flight to my final destination

Overall, terrific service, accommodations, and experience. Only reason comfort was rated lower was because it was difficult to keep a comfortable sleeping position for the overnight flight, but I also had an economy seat.

Not sure if the crew were experiencing something unknown to me,but the service of passing water was non-existent.In addition, please take consideration when providing yogurt as alternative for breakfast as some of us, could be lactose intolerant.. thanks

Very cramped seats in economy, difficult to get comfortable with your legs and feet and back. The seat width is ok but I’m average size. Food is HORRIBLE. Crew is friendly. Delays and very tight connections made it tough for navigating. We would have missed our connecting flight if it wasn’t delayed too. The terminal transit was slow and normally every 10 minutes before 8pm, after 8 pm is every 30 minutes!!!!! No free wine or drinks!! Below average attitude.

Leg room was better than expected. Lavatory’s were easy to access.crew was grea!

Where to fly on a budget this summer

Airfare experts share their forecasts for summer vacation destinations that won’t break your budget.

colorado to europe trip

This summer is shaping up to be another scorcher , and the demand for summer travel is piping hot, too. If early 2024 trends are any indication of what’s to come, “it’s looking to be busier than 2023,” said Katy Nastro, spokesperson for the flight booking site Going . Recent airport passenger volume numbers have regularly exceeded last year and pre-pandemic levels.

Jeff Klee, CEO of CheapAir.com , says airline capacity has rebounded from pandemic complications, but strong travel demand means summer flight prices can be high, depending on when you’re hoping to go. Flying in June, July or early August will be more expensive than later in the season, according to the company’s summer forecast .

“And it’s not just the airfare,” Klee said in an email. “Expensive hotel rates and crowds everywhere make Western Europe tricky for the summer.”

Despite the price tag, “people are going to go,” said Melanie Fish, the head of global public relations for all Expedia Brands, including Vrbo, Expedia and Hotels.com . “When we look at searches for destinations, they are definitely up year over year.”

For popular destinations like Europe , Klee and Fish say to push trips later into August, September or even October. Not only will prices soften, but you’ll alleviate some of the strain of overtourism .

“My number one tip is go ahead and take that summer vacation, but maybe hold on to take that big, big trip in September,” Fish said.

According to Expedia’s summer 2024 travel outlook , we’re currently in the sweet spot for shopping for early summer flights at the best rates, as Fish says lower fares tend to pop up 21 to 60 days out. It doesn’t hurt to start your search even earlier, setting up price alerts to flag when airfare drops. If you can swing it, look to fly on a Monday for international trips or a Tuesday for domestic trips to save up to 15 percent on fares, Fish added.

It’s not impossible to find good deals on airfare, whether you’re looking for a tropical beach trip , a mountain adventure or a vibrant city. Here are places that are trending cheaper — and the destinations you’ll want to avoid.

Go to Mexico

Sun, surf, culture, chilaquiles — Mexico is always a good idea , but particularly so this summer. With the opening of the new airport in Tulum , U.S. airlines have been adding gobs of new flights to Mexico, particularly to beach regions. “We’ve seen a healthy amount of deals down to Mexico resort areas like Cancún,” Nastro said.

Laura Lindsay, global travel trends expert at Skyscanner , says three Mexican cities — Cancún, San José del Cabo and Puerto Vallarta — are among the top 10 destinations offering travelers the best bang for their buck in 2024.

To escape the summer heat, Phyllis Stoller, president of the Women’s Travel Group , recommends high-altitude destinations like Mexico City or Ixtapan de la Sal, a town near Mexico City with thermal springs.

Avoid European port cities

If you’re considering a visit to a popular European city that’s also a cruise hub, beware. Not only will you be battling the usual summer crowds, you’ll be joined by thousands of day-trippers flooding into the ports — meaning Barcelona, Venice , Athens and Santorini.

Sandra Weinacht, who co-owns the tour company Inside Europe Travel Experiences , says you can avoid some of the madness in these hot spots by staying in neighborhoods away from the typical tourist zones. You can also visit top sites in the late afternoon or evening, after cruise travelers have returned to their ships.

Better yet, wait to visit until the shoulder season

Go to Colorado

Epic hiking, breathtaking nature and more craft beer than you could ever try in a lifetime: The Centennial State is a domestic gem. Ashlee Collins of Inspirato , a luxury travel and lifestyle subscription service, says Vail is popular among members this summer. Not only is the ski resort beautiful sans snow, it’s drivable for many, cutting a significant cost for travelers.

Airfare to Colorado is looking more reasonable than other domestic vacation hubs. Nastro recently spotted a Miami-to-Denver, round-trip fare over the July Fourth holiday for just $199. She says an average round trip from major U.S. cities is running between $173 and $250, but those prices are expected to climb upward of $350 the closer we get to summer.

Avoid places at risk for wildfires

Wildfires have become an unfortunate fixture of summers in the Northern Hemisphere. Last year’s fires in Europe — including those in Cyprus and Greece — were among the worst so far this century, the European Commission reported .

Stoller says fire risk has been a factor in her summer travel planning; she nixed a New England cruise after remembering how bad smoke was last year because of the fires in Canada . “None of us can predict everything, but that would be something I would be aware of,” she said.

Extreme heat is also an issue. Last July, Southern Europe experienced excessively high temperatures from a “heat dome.”

“There’s a concern about heat,” Stoller said. “Last summer was really painful.”

Go to the Caribbean

The Caribbean has its peak tourist season during the winter, when Americans flock to warmer waters. That means summer trips to the region tend to be quieter and cheaper.

“You can go under $300 to pretty much all of the islands: Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Aruba, Dominican Republic,” said Lindsay Schwimer, a consumer travel expert at Hopper . She’s seen similar price point flights to Colombia.

Lindsay of Skyscanner also said Puerto Rico and the Bahamas offer some of the most affordable flights from the United States this summer.

Avoid Paris

Unless you’re going for the Olympics , skip the French capital this summer.

“Paris is always a top destination in the summer, but this summer … it’s going to be on another level,” said Madison Pietrowski, head of U.S. brand at GetYourGuide .

Not only are hotel prices high, “we’re seeing that some of the top attractions like the Louvre have raised their ticket prices,” Pietrowski said.

Nastro says the crowds are going to be “bananas” during the Games, and not just in Paris. Olympic travelers are likely to add on other French destinations to their trip, like Nice — which will host soccer games — or the Côte d’Azur, which already gets popular in the summertime.

Even if you try to get ahead of the rush by visiting before the July 26 start date, you may still have some Olympics-related headaches in the French capital. As the city races to finish prep, “you might find that there’s going to be eyesores and scaffolding and loud noises early in the morning,” Nastro said.

Go to rural Europe

Interest in Western Europe has not slowed down, and Americans are expected to surge back en masse this summer. If you’d like to avoid them, put rural European destinations on your radar.

Weinacht is bullish on Spain’s Rioja region , the Basque countryside and the central Italian region of Umbria, which borders Tuscany but does not see the same levels of tourism. She’s also a fan of Carinthia, the least-populated state of Austria. “It is castle- and lake-dotted, doesn’t get too hot, and oh, the food and stories the cities and villages can tell,” Weinacht said in an email.

Weinacht says she’s been getting more requests from Americans for trips to her homeland, Germany. The country is easy to navigate with its high-speed trains, and offers a mix of small and big cities spread across powerhouse wine regions, UNESCO World Heritage sites and many food festivals . According to Skyscanner, airlines in the United States have been increasing their flights to Germany — namely, Frankfurt, an international business hub — meaning you may be able to find more deals.

Avoid Sicily and Amalfi

If your dream Italian destination has been featured on TV lately, that’s a red flag. The last season of “The White Lotus” spurred an interest in already popular Sicily ; the same is happening to the Amalfi Coast thanks to the new Netflix miniseries “Ripley.”

“They’re really going to be the most expensive and they’re going to be pretty crowded for the summer,” Schwimer said.

Where to go

Our favorite destinations: These 12 destinations are at the top of our wish list for where to go this year, without crowds. In 2023, we explored an Alaskan bear paradise, Brooklyn’s famous pizzerias and a hidden gem in Italy, among other highlights .

Travel like a local: Residents share their favorite places in our top city guides: New Orleans , Rome , Tokyo and Mexico City .

National parks: This comprehensive guide has details on all 63 U.S. national parks. For a deep dive into five of the most well-known, you can listen to the Field Trip podcast . Then explore tips from locals for visiting Yosemite , Glacier and Everglades .

Tales from the road: Dolly Parton has opened a new resort at her theme park complex in Tennessee, while “Fixer Upper” stars Chip and Joanna Gaines have a new hotel in Waco . Road-trippers may be just as excited to see the cartoon beaver at Buc-ee’s , and bargain-hunters should consider a stop at the Unclaimed Baggage store in Scottsboro, Ala.

Man shocked by $143,000 phone bill from overseas trip

A Florida man got the shock of his life by looking at his cellphone bill after a trip to Europe.

(Gray News) - When it comes to your phone plan, it helps to read the fine print. A Florida man learned that the hard way after he incurred a fortune in roaming charges during a trip to Europe.

Rene Remund told WFTS he was charged $143,269 for using 9.5 gigabytes of roaming data during a three-week trip to Switzerland.

He said he’s been a T-Mobile customer for more than 30 years and said he had been assured beforehand at a T-Mobile store that he would be “covered” while overseas.

At first, Remund said his eyes deceived him, as he thought the bill was for $143.

He said he got in touch with a representative, who assured him the bill was correct. At that point, he turned to legal help.

T-Mobile ended up crediting him for the account.

The Federal Communications Commission encourages people to know the details of their cellular plan coverage before they go on international trips, including whether your mobile phone will work there, what the roaming rates are and how to track your usage.

T-Mobile similarly encouraged its customers to check the details of their plans before setting out, as some older plans don’t include international roaming.

“If you’re not on a Go5G, Magenta, ONE Plan, Essentials, or a Simple Choice plan and you’ll be traveling outside the U.S., you can add World Class International Roaming to each line,” T-Mobile said on its webpage devoted to explaining its international roaming services . Customers can do this by managing their plan .

Other options include blocking international data and having a prepaid plan while overseas.

The Three Key Club in New York City

Expect: The highest luxury and impeccable design in Soho, Midtown, and the Financial District. Within the small club of Three Key hotels in the United States, four make their home in New York City. The Aman New York (Midtown) and Casa Cipriani (the Financial District) both make use of glamorous Beaux Arts buildings, the former a gold-crowned skyscraper in Midtown, the latter a glamorously restored ferry terminal at the very southern tip of Manhattan. Each is a refuge: an elegant, painstakingly designed escape from bustling city life. Meanwhile, two Firmdale hotels round out the list of Three Key hotels in New York City. Each is a quintessential example of the style and execution of the group’s co-owner and interior designer, Kit Kemp. Its sheer breadth of size and variety means it’s no surprise to announce California as the state with the most Key hotels in America. Here, we’ll point you towards coastal gems like the sublime architectural achievements in Big Sur ( Post Ranch Inn and Ventana ), beachside luxuries in Santa Monica (in particular: the newly opened Georgian ), and wine country favorites like SingleThread and the Madrona . Across America: The Golden Age of Celebrity

Our French Keys bask in the tradition of ancient vineyards, stone chateaus, and historic palaces. In the United States, we see a different tradition. In Los Angeles, places like Chateau Marmont , the Paramour Estate , Sunset Tower , and the Charlie date back to guests and residents as illustrious as Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. These are spaces that play ingeniously with their history, even as they forge ahead with cutting-edge amenities and experiences. But it’s not just California. New York’s historic artist hotspot, the Hotel Chelsea , once hosted Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol. Today, it decorates every space with art donated by former residents. Look too to the Chicago Athletic Association , a former member’s club for 20th century business magnates and athletes — now among the city’s most impressive and vibrant hotels. County Road 26 to open Monday for local, critical trips

Limited travel for commuters using the lake city cutoff opens after state and county collaboration as bridge closure continues.

Montrose and Gunnison Counties — This weekend, CDOT and Gunnison County are working together to accelerate improvements to County Road 26 (Lake City Cutoff) so it can open Monday for local commuter travel between Montrose and Gunnison.  At the same time, engineers continue to conduct safety inspections of the US Highway 50 bridge crossing the Blue Mesa Reservoir at Dillon Pinnacles. This bridge, located west of Gunnison at Mile Point 136.3, closed Thursday in the interest of public safety after an inspection revealed a crack in one of the girders. The technical structure name for the bridge is K-07-B.

Recognizing the US 50 closure creates a significant detour for commuters traveling between Montrose and Gunnison, CDOT and Gunnison County officials this weekend prioritized getting a shorter access route in place for local travel between the two communities. That collaboration will continue as officials work to further fortify the road with gravel and manage traffic to a level that the road can safely carry.

“We are starting slow in order to increase the chances we can go faster later. The impact on western Colorado cannot be understated and we are exhausting all opportunities and partnerships to mitigate the impacts of the bridge closure,” said Martin Schmidt, Assistant Gunnison County Manager for Public Works.

On Monday, April 22, pilot cars will lead  passenger vehicles through the access route two times a day in each direction. Because CR 26 is a high-mountain, unpaved road that is not intended to accommodate the traffic volumes of US 50, travel times will be limited and commercial vehicles exceeding a 16,001 gross vehicle weight rating are prohibited. The schedule for piloted travel is:

  • 6 to 6:30 a.m. and 6 to 6:30 p.m. for westbound travel
  • 7 to 7:30 a.m. and 7 to 7:30 p.m. for eastbound travel

The queue for westbound pilot car operations will start near the intersection of CO 149 and CR 26 and the queue for eastbound travel will start near the intersection of US 50 and CR 26. The travel time on the access route is expected to be 30 minutes or more.

County Road 26 will only be open for local, essential travel during these timeframes. The road will remain closed at all other times for the ongoing restoration work needed to ensure the road remains safe for travel.

A hotline and email continue to be in place to assist customers with questions about the closure. Anyone with questions can reach out via 970-648-4423 or [email protected] . Calls will be closely monitored and will receive a prompt reply. Information is also available on the project website at bit.ly/us50bridge . Travelers should refer to COtrip.org or the smartphone COtrip Planner app to plan an alternate route.

“CDOT appreciates Gunnison county’s dedication and hard work as we cooperate to offer more options to help the western slope manage this safety closure.  CDOT will continue to support the county as we focus on the opening of County Road 26 to serve the critical needs of residents,” said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. “County Road 26 is an important local route that is up to five hours more efficient than detouring via state highways. However, this road currently has a natural roadbed and can only accommodate limited traffic - so it is important that we help Gunnison County focus this capacity on the needs of local communities most impacted by the closure.”

There are two recommended detours for through travel via Interstate 70 to the north or US 160 to the south and these detours add six to eight hours of travel time. CDOT is coordinating with emergency service providers to ensure emergency response is unaffected.

Travel Impacts

  • US 50 is closed between Montrose and Gunnison
  • Recommended alternate routes are I-70 to the north or US 160 to the south
  • A limited, local detour is in place for travel at specific times

U.S. issues travel warning for Israel with Iran attack believed to be imminent and fear Gaza war could spread

By Debora Patta , Tucker Reals

Updated on: April 13, 2024 / 5:25 PM EDT / CBS News

Update: Iran launched drone attacks against Israel on Saturday. Read CBS News'  latest coverage here .

Tel Aviv  — Israel is bracing for a worst-case scenario that U.S. officials believe could materialize within just hours — the possibility of a direct attack on Israeli soil by Iran in retaliation for a strike almost two weeks ago that killed seven Iranian military officers. Iran has vowed to take revenge for Israel killing its commanders, who were hit by an April 1 strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria's capital.

Two U.S. officials told CBS News that a major Iranian attack against Israel was expected as soon as Friday, possibly to include more than 100 drones and dozens of missiles aimed at military targets inside the country. Sources have told CBS News the retaliation could include attacks carried out both by Iranian forces, and proxy groups around the region that it has been funneling additional arms to for weeks.

The officials said it would be challenging for the Israelis to defend against an attack of that magnitude, and while they held out the possibility that the Iranians could opt for a smaller-scale attack to avoid a dramatic escalation, their retaliation was believed to be imminent.

Asked Friday how imminent he believes an attack is, President Biden responded, "I don't want to get into secure information, but my expectation is sooner than later." The president urged Iran not to move forward, saying his message to Tehran was: "Don't."

Tehran has not indicated publicly how or when it will return fire, so it's unclear how far Iran's leaders will go. If they decide to carry out a direct attack on Israel, there's fear it could blow Israel's ongoing war against Iranian ally Hamas up into a much wider regional conflict.

With the Iranian retaliation expected at any time, the U.S. State Department on Thursday warned Americans in Israel not to travel outside major cities, which are better protected from incoming rocket fire by the country's Iron Dome missile defense system. The latest guidance noted that travel by U.S. government employees in Israel could be further restricted with little notice as things develop in the tinderbox region.

"Whoever harms us, we will harm them," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday as he visited troops at an Israel Defense Forces airbase. "We are prepared … both defensively and offensively."

Iran-Burning Flags Of The U.S. And Israel

On Saturday, all U.S. embassies in the Middle East were put on high alert and required to hold emergency action committee meetings. Diplomats in Lebanon and Israel were specifically told not to travel to certain areas within those countries.

Sima Shine, a security expert and former official with Israel's national intelligence agency Mossad, told CBS News it was a dangerous moment for the region, and the "most worried" she has been. She said anxiety over an all-out war was likely just as high "on both sides, in Israel and in Iran."

If Iran does choose to strike Israel directly, it could involve a complex missile and drone attack similar to the one Iranian forces launched against a Saudi oil facility in 2019 .

"They will try to do it on the military or some military asset," Shine predicted. "But the question will be the damage. If there would be many injured people, killed or injured … I think it has the potential for a huge escalation."

Iran- International Jerusalem Day Rally In Tehran

Shine stressed, however, that she still believes neither side actually wants a regional conflict.

U.S. "really trying to avoid war"

The U.S. sent a senior general to Israel this week to coordinate with the close American ally on any response it might make to an Iranian attack. Speaking Friday on "CBS Mornings," America's top military officer said, "we're really trying to avoid war."

"This is part of the dialogue that I have with my counterparts within the region, to include the Israeli chief of defense, who I talked to yesterday," said Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., adding that the U.S. military was "doing things not only to prevent a war, but at the same time, one of my primary things is to make sure all the forces in the region are protected."

"My role, as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, is to plan and prepare," Brown said. "That's one thing we do very well."

Brown's Israeli counterpart, Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, "completed a comprehensive situational assessment on the readiness of the IDF for all scenarios," Israel's military said Friday.

"The IDF is very strongly prepared, both offensively and defensively, against any threat," Halevi was quoted as saying in the statement. "The IDF continues to monitor closely what is happening in Iran and different arenas, constantly preparing to deal with existing and potential threats in coordination with the United States Armed Forces."

The IDF said the visiting U.S. general, Central Command chief Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, was taking part in the IDF's situational assessment.

The dilemma for Iran, said Israeli expert Shine, is to figure out how to deliver its promised response to Israel's attack in Syria, but in a way that does not lead to further escalation. Likewise, Shine said Israel could choose to show restraint when it responds to whatever Iran eventually does.

If either side gets the balance wrong, the consequences for the region, and even the world, could be dire.
