Not just the wife of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love is an American alternative rock/ punk musician originally San Francisco, California.

Born as Courtney Michelle Harrison on 9 July 1964 in San Francisco, California and got her start in music in the 1980s first with the newly formed band, Sugar Babydoll, then joined the group Faith No More as their singer. After getting Faith No More, Love formed the group Pagan Babies and together they played several house shows and recorded one 4-track demo before disbanding in late 1985. Love then went on to move to various places and continued to be involved in music, as well as acting.

Having taught herself how to play the guitar, she moved to West Hollywood in 1989 with the intention of starting a new band. The new band, Hole, consisted of Eric Erlandson, Lisa Roberts, and Caroline Rue. The band released two singles, followed by their first album, “Pretty On The Inside,” which was released in 1991; after its release, the group gained a following. After the release of “Pretty on the Inside,” Love began dating Kurt Cobain and became pregnant, during which Hole recorded and released a cover of “Over The Edge” and a new single entitled “Beautiful Son.”

In October 1993 with a new lineup, Hole recorded their second album, “Live Through This,” which was a few days after the tragic death of Kobain. The album was met with critical acclaim and was certified platinum by 1995. After Hole's world tour concluded in 1996, Love made a return to acting and two years later released the album, “My Body, The Hand Grenade,” which was a compilation album. They also released an EP entitled “The First Session,” followed by their third album, “Celebrity Skin.” The band then set out on tour and then went dormant in the following two years, making an announcement in 2002 that they officially broke up.

With Hole no longer being a band, Love started a femme super group called Bastard during 2001; however, the group never went far. This prompted Love to pursue her solo career, and released “America’s Sweetheart” that sold 86,000 copies in its first three months. In 2006 Love recorded her second album, “How Dirty Girls Get Clean,” which chronicled her time getting clean in rehab. Technically released as a Hole album, Love released “Nobody’s Daughter” in 2010. Meanwhile Love also maintained an acting career and worked on an art career, debuting her collection in New York. In April 2014 Love released a single entitled “You Know My Name” and set out on tour with Lana Del Rey.

Live reviews

I am a huge fan of 90’s music. There are many bands I have seen perform live from that era. But, there are also many bands I missed out on for one reason or another. Hole is one of those bands. I won’t get a chance to see them perform, but I had a chance for the next best thing. Courtney Love was going to perform a solo show in my city. I knew I had to go. I was a huge fan of her when I was younger.I wasn’t sure what to expect when I arrived at the venue. It was a small club downtown. There was a surprising number of young people. I wondered if some of them were born when the name Courtney Love was first known. I let this thought leave my head, and decided to find my seat instead. The stage was kind of small. I wondered how Courtney Love would react to this. She was a big star by this point. Luckily, I did not have to wonder for long. Courtney took the stage and made a joke about the size of the stage. She then performed for nearly two hours. She did a mix of Hole songs and some of her later material. All of it was amazing. Overall, the concert was great. I hope to see her again if she returns to my area.

Courtney Love Reveals Tentative Timeline, Song Teasers for First Album in 13 Years

Welcome back, Courtney Love . The Hole frontwoman recently reactivated an unofficial TikTok account, using it as a platform to tease some of the new music she has in the works and to reveal that she has a tentative timeline for the release of her long in the works new album.

For those keeping track, Love's last, and only, solo record was 2004's America's Sweetheart , while she reactivated the Hole band name for her last "band" release, 2010's Nobody's Daughter . In the time since, she's issued a handful of non-album singles in 2014 and 2015, but a new full-length album had not come to fruition ... until now.

Through the TikTok account, Love addressed fans stating, “It’s Courtney, hi. I’m not going to have an official TikTok. I’m just gonna upload some teasers from my album that’s coming out… Christmas, if we’re lucky. I’m just gonna upload some teasers. This is not an official page. If you get this in your For You page, then the AI is listening. There’s just some songs, little bits… I’m not giving too much away from my album which is probably out Christmas.”

Love then proceeded to share a wealth of short video clips, often with her listening to the music, sometimes lip synching and other times singing along to the music. In one of the videos, she noted that she felt this was "the longest record that's ever been written in the history of rock," adding, "So it better fuckin' be good, no filler."

As for why it's taken so long, there's been a few detours along the way. Most notably, there had been on-and-off discussions of reuniting the core '90s Hole lineup. Love has also spent time working on a book as well. But it now looks like her long awaited album will be arriving sooner than later. Take a listen to some of the various song clips that Love has provided for her next studio album below.

Q&A With Courtney Love: On Her Memoir and ‘I’m Still Alive’ Tour

By Steve Baltin

Steve Baltin

Courtney Love kicked off her first tour since 2010 last week in Philadelphia. The “I’m Still Alive” tour, as she has dubbed it, is the prelude to a big year for the Hole frontwoman, who hopes to have a new album and autobiography (co-written with Rolling Stone writer Anthony Bozza) out this December.

On the opening day of the tour, which she promises will feature rarities and covers, the always entertaining and forthright Love talked to Rolling Stone about a variety of subjects, from the new album and book to the thread that she feels united Hole, Smashing Pumpkins , Nine Inch Nails and the Red Hot Chili Peppers . She also made clear that any reunion of the original Hole lineup is out of the question.

500 Greatest Albums of All Time: Hole, ‘Live Through This’

You sent me a single at the end of last year and then we hadn ‘ t heard anything in a while. What prompted the tour now? That was supposed to come out, it hasn’t, and it’s not going to until Christmas, when the book comes out. So I’m just calling this the I’m Still Alive tour. Hopefully we’ll come up with really cool covers, we’ll come up with rarities that we don’t play often, etc. We’ll play some hits. It’s really good for the band to get tighter. It’s small venues, so if you really are a fan and you like Hole and you like the music I’ve written, then you’ll hear songs that you haven’t so much heard. I thought the single was gonna be out now. It’s not gonna be out until HarperCollins has this book. So I sent you “This Is War,” which is beautiful. It’s actually called “Wedding Day.” And then the B-side is called “California,” which, if you’re gonna call a song “California,” you better know it’s fucking good, and it is. Then there are two other songs that are excellent out of the 12 we’ve recorded. So four songs so far, but I’m really picky, and I need an impeccable record at this point. We can do it really quick, so probably after this tour we’ll start recording. All I’m focused on right now is getting the right record deal. There have only been four alternative records this year that have done well – three of them, including Queens of the Stone Age and Vampire Weekend, are on the same umbrella group, and Fall Out Boy . So those are nice glimpses of hope in an otherwise completely rapped-out, popped-out, whacked-out world that I just don’t understand.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

What are some of the surprises you have in store for this tour? Someone brought up “Credit in the Straight World” – I’m gonna look into that. There are probably four or five good songs on America ‘ s Sweetheart that we can look into. There are songs I don’t play almost ever that we can look into. We’ll work within the oeuvre of what we have, but in small venues and for superfans, and some people who have never seen me. Girls that were 12 in 2010 are now 15, so they can come see me. That’s my demographic – smart guys that are hetero, a lot of gay guys, a lot of disaffected girls and some women that were like, “I grew up on you.” The best compliment I’ve received in forever is somebody played me a band with all males in it and said, “God, this sounds like Hole,” meaning they understood there was an acoustic and sonic aesthetic element to the music that had nothing to do with gender. And I was so impressed with this person noticing that. And the last interview I had was with this guy where he was like, “Yeah, you were part of a movement 23 years ago that I find important, grunge.” I’m like, “No, we weren’t. We were no more grunge than the Chili Peppers.” We weren’t allowed to be grunge. I wanted to be grunge because it was a movement, but no one would let me in. So as unique as the Chili Peppers were on their island, Hole has always been on its own little island. I’d also say the same for Nine Inch Nails and the Smashing Pumpkins back then.

Kristi Noem Describes Executing Puppy She 'Hated' in New Book

Billie eilish would like to reintroduce herself, kanye west announces 'yeezy porn' amid reports of adult film company, eric church's 2024 stagecoach performance was a helluva thing to witness.

The one thread I ‘ d say for all three of you was good songwriting. Thank you, I appreciate that, and a different aesthetic to all three of us. Trent [Reznor] has definitely gotten away with a hell of a lot more than me or Billy [Corgan] in terms of calling his band Nine Inch Nails and no one caring who’s in it. But that’s probably because he’s kept the lights down low. He never lets anyone else pose for a picture [ laughs ]. Somebody interviewed me today who had just talked to Corgan, and he said one of his sourpuss bon mots like, “Nostalgia is death.” But I happen to agree with him – if it’s not fresh and new I’m picking up my pup tent, and I mean by Christmas. On this tour, like I said, it’s a bit of an accident. It was supposed to converge with the single that I sent you nine months ago. There are now three more songs that are as good, and it’s a damn good song. Micko [Larkin] wrote the riff in it and I’ve been playing with Micko now eight years, which is as long as I played with Eric [Erlandson], and so people just need to get over that nostalgia thing with me, because it’s not gonna happen. If I wanted to do one of those big money sell-out reunion things, you think I haven’t been asked a million times? About as many times as I’ve been asked to do reality television – lots of times. And the answer is just gonna stay the same: N-O. So we’re gonna be doing gems from the catalog, things people are familiar with, good covers, small, nice venues. Get done, get back, record, finish the book and come back out in the new year.

Courtney Love Vs. Taylor, Madonna, and More: An (Incomplete) Beef Timeline

Courtney love joins billie joe armstrong to perform tom petty, cheap trick songs in london, he wrote the first nirvana bio. 30 years later, he has a few changes.

Who are you working with on the book? I’m writing some of it myself and then I’m co-writing it with Anthony Bozza. Yesterday I did four hours on it, the day before that I did five hours on it. Just covering the bases, but I finally have a map of places that need coverage and I can hop around from starting in 1994 and get to 2008 in two sentences. It’s hard for me to be really linear. I’m reading Just Kids again because I know [ Patti Smith ] wrote that by herself, and My Booky Wook by Russell Brand, which I think is a great book in terms of just his voice. And then I found an old Tallulah Bankhead book where she is very fabulous. So it’s a combination of those three books. [ Keith Richards ‘] Life was just so bloody long, I didn’t even finish it.

Lana Del Rey and Courtney Love Are Going on Tour Together: Here's How to Dress the Part

Edited by Chelsea Zalopany

Lana del Rey and Courtney Love

It’s an unlikely union, but it might be the coolest in a long time: Today, the much-awaited Lana Del Rey and **Courtney Love’**s The Endless Summer tour launches across the United States. That means a stage filled with the transfixingly smooth West Coast vocals of Lana Del Rey and the seismic guitar strums and howling lyrics of the legendary Courtney Love. So how do you dress for the event that combines pre-millennium rock ’n’ roll flair of Love and the beloved-by-moody-millennials-everywhere tunes of Del Rey? Take a cue from the music videos, of course! Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness” isn’t so sad anymore in a brighter striped curve-skimming dress and gold hoops, while Love circa Hole’s “Celebrity Skin” gets the chic crop-top, belly-baring sliver of the late nineties. Here, see six looks that promise to harmonize perfectly.

Where Are They Now?: Courtney Love

by Jacob Uitti April 17, 2023, 8:44 am

Hole frontwoman and widow of Kurt Cobain, rocker Courtney Love, appeared on the WTF podcast from host and comedian Marc Maron.

Videos by American Songwriter

On the show, Love spoke in detail about her life and her notorious past, as well as what’s to come, saying she’s working on a new album.

But truly what has been going on in Love’s life since the late ’90s? Where has the artist and mom to Frances Bean Cobain been up to?

New Kurt Cobain Song

Love’s seminal rock band Hole released its first album, Pretty on the Inside , in 1991, and its last album, Nobody’s Daughter, in 2010. It was the band’s fourth and final album. Love also released a solo record, America’s Sweetheart , in 2004.

[RELATED: The 35 Best Courtney Love Quotes]

Speaking to Maron earlier this year, Love talked about both a forthcoming new album that is almost finished and a song, “ Justice for Kurt ,” that will not be on it. (Listen to the full episode  HERE .)

“It’s great!” said Love of the song. “But like, we’re like, they’re too stupid. It would swallow the entire narrative. Rock does not stream. In fact, I had breakfast…”

“It would swallow the entire narrative how?” Maron asked.

“It’s not worth it!” Love replied. “It’s 2:24. It’s an earworm and a half. If I’m going to write a fuckin’ song called ‘Justice for Kurt’ it’s going to be a fucking earworm. But I’m not putting it on that record to ruin my record. I don’t need Kurt ruining more of my shit…”

Love did note she may release it as a single down the road.

That single aside, Love, who is living in the U.K. now, is making a new album. “It’s not rock,” she said of the album. “ It’s a magnum opus ’cause I haven’t made a record in 12 years.”

Love hasn’t released new music since the 2019 song, “Mother,” for  The Turning  soundtrack. What the new album will sound like is anyone’s guess.

According to Maron’s podcast summary, “Courtney Love is finishing up her first record in more than a decade while she lives in London, perhaps permanently. Courtney fled LA because, as she tells Marc, she needed to get out of the ‘over culture.’ It’s one of many realizations Courtney came upon in recent years, after a lifetime of ups and downs, peace and chaos, fame and infamy. Courtney takes Marc along for the journey as they sip tea in a London hotel.”

The new album, whatever it will be, isn’t the only thing Love has been working on as of late. The 58-year-old singer also talked about making a new memoir.

“Dude(s). I think I might have just signed off on my book…,” She wrote on Instagram . “After a fucking DECADE of dragging my ass ( @abramovich.alex  patience of a SAINT❤️‍🩹🙏)  @harpercollins  don’t pop the champagne quite yet. ‘The sex work is in! The sex work is in.’ “Yeah but the doll is on a FULL MEDIA BLACKOUT (quoting the great Del Rey genius ‘NO-ONE TELLS MY STORY BUT ME’ motto. Bible💯)  so ☯️⚖️⚖️ #youwinsomeyoulosesome,” she continued.

[RELATED: Courtney Love Reacts to Usage of Nirvana’s “Rape Me” in TV Show ‘Succession’] “There’s a (no kidding) very real paper supply chain backup, so don’t ask me when (The important thing is that it’s good now.) Lots of what Alex calls my ‘Victorian adventures’ and I seem to have 29 lives & counting. With crazy luck of being in the right place, right time (and sometimes way wrong!). “Fun fact. I got into #benningtoncollege class of 1981, from a maximum security Juvie lockdown in Eugene, Oregon. Thanks, @lilianolikwriter in advance for all the fact-checking leads she’s already started, because no way is that going in without receipts,” she added.  “Lots more fashion too, as I changed the phony rags to riches narrative to include my mother’s/family’s wealth. & My impossibly glamorous af grandmother who went to the Paris collections & would show me the boning & stitches inside of her Balmains & Chanel couture pieces etc. Fuck an untrue narrative bc that’s what people ‘like.’ The truth is so much more fun, more rich, makes more sense. And there’s lots of rags too! Someone said “your class neutral like a Scottish brogue“ as I’ve been all the classes, sometimes simultaneously! “Anyway. So far, so good. CIAO!”

Two years ago, Love did an interview for the L,A. Times with best-selling Seattle music writer, Charles Cross. She talked about the Nirvana album, Nevermind , on its 30th anniversary.

Among the number of topics discussed, many fans and outlets are pointing to the fact that Love said she thought the Nirvana track, “In Bloom,” should have been the band’s debut single from the monstrous, 30-million-copy-selling record. Instead, of course, “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” was the first single, rocketing the band to fame.

“Life would have turned out simpler and better had I been heard,” Love said in the interview. “I’m not really a fan of the idea that it all ‘could have been that different, but ‘In Bloom’ might have shifted things. He might have survived had somebody else [gone first]. Like Eddie Vedder, somebody who had good infrastructure.”

She added, “We were in Salem, Oregon when  Nevermind  went to No. 1. He cried. I cried. We were really scared. He loved what  Nevermind  was. He licked his lips and was like ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa.’ But he hid it really well, so he’s attributed these saintly qualities. He possessed modesty, and he put forth this public virtue persona, and he was good at that. But he worked it. He worked it like Kate Moss works her cheekbones.”

Hall of Fame

More recently , Love has highlighted the need for more women in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The vocalist took to social media to share the words of journalist Jessica Hopper. In response to an article titled “Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame celebrates women who rock,” Hopper wrote, “Do they tho? 719 inductees to the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, only 61 are women. That’s 8.48 per cent. C’mon @rockhall, it’s FUCKING GRIM BRO when yr doing worse than women-artists-on-country radio numbers (10 per cent) and women headliners at major music festivals (13 per cent).”

“@jesshopp DOES THE MATH!” Love wrote when sharing the tweet. “37 years in existence & women make up 8.48 per cent of inductees out of 719.”

She then added a screenshot of a text to the Foo Fighters frontman about his own induction into the HoF and how he should “hold the seats of Tina Turner and Carole King, both who have been eligible for over 30! years each.”

Grohl has been inducted into the Rock Hall twice over. First with Nirvana in 2013 and then again with the Foo Fighters in 2021. In past years, he has been a part of the inductions of Queen (2001) and Rush (2013).

[RELATED: Courtney Love Calls for More Women In Rock Hall, Shares Texts with Dave Grohl]

“ELIGIBILITY is 25 years after 1st release,” she added before discussing how Foo Fighters “were nominated 4 secs later.”

This is the latest in a long line of feuds between Love and Grohl. The pair’s relationship began to sour soon after Kurt Cobain committed suicide. The pair have gone back and forth over the years in the press.

Today, as Maron’s podcast synopsis noted, the San Francisco-born Love lives in London. The daughter of the former tour manager for the Grateful Dead got out of the west coast and lives life in the shadow of Big Ben.

Many are waiting for her new album, hoping it will be great. Which it likely will be.

Hole fans may actually Live Through This lifetime with a reunion in sight.

Billie Joe Armstrong ’s cover band The Coverups played an intimate, pop-up show in London at the 600-capacity venue The Garage on Tuesday and surprised the crowd with Courtney Love for a rare performance. After the ‘90s icon, 59, joined the Green Day frontman, 52, and his band for several songs, she thrilled the audience by teasing a reunion with her band Hole.

“Later, I’ll be back in Hole,” Love was captured saying in a fan-recorded clip , as she threw up her arms in the air, just before walking off stage.

According to another video , Armstrong added, “I told you it was going to be a special night.”

During their special set, the “Celebrity Skin” singer sang several Cheap Trick songs, including “He’s a Whore” and “ Surrender ,” as well as Tom Petty ’s “ Even the Losers .”

As Love came out on stage, she was captured joking about being away from the stage for some time. “My name is Courtney Love. You may not remember me,” said the grunge legend, who wore a long floral-printed dress. “I’ve been living in a cave in Birmingham for about nine years. We’ll give this a f---ing try, right?”

Armstrong and his bandmates — Mike Dirnt, Greg Schneider and members of the Green Day touring team, including bandmate Jason White, tour manager Bill Schneider and audio engineer Chris Dugan — accompanied Love for the three songs.

Throughout the set, Love's vocals took the lead while she leaned into her typically gruff sound, and Armstrong harmonized with her at times. The "Doll Parts" artist also rocked out by dancing and banging her head — all the while appearing to revel in the moment as she and Armstrong frequently looked at each other while smiling, even sharing a couple sweet hugs and kisses.

“Grandma did not have her teleprompter,” Love quipped at one point. The audience didn’t seem to mind, though, as they responded by chanting her name. “I will take it,” she added.

Armstrong and his group, who play rock and punk classics, announced their special London shows just last week on social media . In addition to the show at The Garage, they revealed that they’ll play a second gig at 100 Club on Friday.

Love’s tease of a reunion with her band Hole — which disbanded over two decades ago in 2002 and briefly got back together with a different lineup from 2009 to 2012 — was welcomed by the crowd, who erupted in cheers.

Over the years, the “Miss World” singer has mentioned the potential of getting back together with original members guitarist Eric Erlandson, drummer Patty Schemel and bassist Melissa Auf der Mauoften — but has often gone back and forth about the subject.

Niels van Iperen/Getty Images

Most recently in 2021, she told Vogue that “a proper Hole reunion” will “absolutely not” happen. “And you guys have gotta get over it. Our old manager Peter Mensch calls once a year to ask about a reunion: ‘Hey, just doing my thing I do every year with you and Jimmy Page [of Led Zeppelin ].’ And I’m so honored to be in that company, but it’s just not gonna happen," Love bluntly said.

She continued, “We’re all really good friends and Melissa and I are especially close — we talk every day. But Eric is kinda off-the-grid right now — I think he’s in Japan literally becoming a monk. I’m not even kidding. Melissa, Patty, and I think he’s become a monk or something on that level of asceticism.”

Although, the year prior, Love explained to NME that she, Schemel, 56, and Auf der Mauoften, 51, "had a good session" at a rehearsal space. "[A reunion is] something I’d love to do and I’ve been taking guitar lessons over Zoom during lockdown and I’m writing again so we’ll see!"

Courtney Love announced she finally finished writing her memoir.

Good things come to those who wait.

Courtney Love surprised fans with some good news on Friday as she announced she finally finished writing her memoir after a decade of “dragging my a–.”

Revealing her upcoming book is titled, “The Girl with the Most Cake,” the singer thanked her ghostwriter Alex Abramovich and her publisher Harper Collins.

“Dude(s). I think I might have just signed off on my book… After a f–ing DECADE of dragging my a–,” she wrote on Instagram .

But a release date for the book remains foggy, according to Love.

She wrote, “There’s a (no kidding) very real power supply chain back up, so don’t ask me when (The important thing is that it’s good now.)”

Love went on to tease what fans can expect from the memoir.

“I seem to have 29 lives and counting. With crazy luck of being in the right place, right time (and sometimes way wrong!),” she added.

The Hole frontwoman said she tweaked parts of the memoir to include more personal details of her family, including her mother, and her “impossibly glamorous grandmother.”

Love married to Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain in 1992 and they welcomed daughter Frances Bean Cobain that year.

“F– an untrue narrative because that’s what people ‘like.’ The truth is so much more fun, more rich, makes more sense. And there’s lots of rags too!” Love added.

“The Girl with the Most Cake” was set to be released in 2013, but things didn’t go to plan for Love. In 2014, she called the project a “disaster” and fans were forced to be patient for its release.

The legendary musician died in April 1994.

Courtney Love Reveals Her Serious Health Issue

Courtney Love looking stern

Grunge rock artist Courtney Love has been transparent with her battle with drug addiction. According to Loudwire , Love's substance abuse issues became public during her marriage to Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain . The rock star man and wife were both using heroin when Love was pregnant with their first and only child, daughter Frances Bean. After revealing that she used heroin during her pregnancy, Love and Cobain had to fight to regain custody of Frances as a result of social services taking her away and temporarily placing her in the custody of Cobain's mother, per People .

During the 90s, Love stared showing up in public seemingly intoxicated , including a disastrous appearance at the 1995 MTV VMAs. She was so out of it at the time that she infamously crashed Madonna's interview . By 2003, Love faced two drug-related arrests after allegedly being abusive towards airplane staff seven months before she was arrested again and charged for being under the influence of a controlled substance when she broke the windows of then-boyfriend and manager Jim Barber, according to the Los Angeles Times (via People ) .  Shortly after her release, Love called 911 and was taken by paramedics where she was "treated for a possible overdose."

Nearly twenty years later, Love accepted her Icon Award at the 2020 NME Awards and revealed that she was 18 months sober. A year later, the "Doll Parts" singer took to social media to give her fans a health update on her journey to sobriety.

Courtney Love explains why she's been sick

After decades of battling drug abuse, Courtney Love took to Instagram in March 2021 to explain an entirely different health struggle. In a lengthy caption under a short filtered selfie video, the "Miss World" rocker revealed her health condition. "People, I've been sad, and extremely sick. Debilitated, in indescribable pain and in August at 97 pounds almost died in hospital from anemia," she shared. She went on to share how grateful she is to find an empathetic pain management doctor after being "stigmatized for being an addict for 9 months by many ill-equipped drs, backwards drs and quacks," she claimed.

Love went on to explain how CBD oil has aided in her sober living. "I'm so good now. And on CBD oil," she said in relief. "Which has removed ALMOST ALL the physical symptoms. And all the pain." She went on to admit to once being skeptical of "cannabis/THC" products due to her dislike for the "weed feeling." She also gave a special shoutout to actor Woody Harrelson for being the first one to inform her of the benefits of using CBD, and confirmed that she is "still 100 percent sober." Despite her "frail" state, Kurt Cobain's widow says she is "walking" and will "be strong again soon."

After a life of ups and downs, Courtney is taking the necessary steps to living a happy and healthy life. Way to go Mrs. Cobain!

Heart’s Nancy Wilson Defends Taylor Swift After Courtney Love Diss: ‘People Have Jealous Reactions’

Heart's Nancy Wilson Defends Taylor Swift After Courtney Love Diss: 'People Have Jealous Reactions'

Heart’s Nancy Wilson doesn’t agree with Courtney Love ’s take on Taylor Swift .

Wilson, 70, who has been the guitarist and second vocalist for Heart since 1974, spoke about the young women currently dominating the music industry during a Tuesday, April 23, interview with the Tampa Bay Times . She named Billie Eilish , Olivia Rodrigo and Maggie Rogers as some of her favorites before going on to praise Swift, 34.

“I watched the Eras Tour and I really love the fact that she does an acoustic bit all by herself,” Wilson said of Swift’s ongoing tour, which kicked off in March 2023. “It’s such a global event, her show, but to make a point of doing that inside of her show was actually really amazing and cool of her to do. She’s a great songwriter.”

Wilson added that she thinks Swift’s “biggest problem” is “that she’s so extremely good looking,” explaining that “people have jealous reactions” when beautiful women are successful.

“I know Courtney Love is not a fan. I’ve been a friend of Courtney Love, but I disagree with her opinion about that,” she added.

Love, 59, who rose to prominence as the lead vocalist of the alternative rock band Hole in the 1980s and ‘90s, made headlines earlier this month for saying that “ Taylor [Swift] is not important ” during an interview with the Evening Standard .

“She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist,” Love continued.

Wilson said on Tuesday that it’s Love’s “job to have the punk ethics and push against what’s popular” and praised the “great songs” she’s written. However, she still thinks she’s wrong about Swift.

“All hail Courtney Love, but I consider Taylor Swift to be very important at this time in our culture,” she said.

Swift isn’t the only person Love took aim at during the controversial interview. She said Lana Del Rey was “great” up until she covered John Denver ’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” and should “really take seven years” off of making music.

Love also said that many women in the music industry are “becoming a cliché” and admitted that she’s not a Beyoncé fan.

“Now, every successful woman is cloned, so there is just too much music. They’re all the same,” she said. “If you play something on Spotify, you get bombarded with a lot of stuff that’s exactly the same. I mean, I like the idea of Beyoncé doing a country record because it’s about Black women going into spaces where previously only white women have been allowed, not that I like it much. As a concept, I love it. I just don’t like her music.”

Love shares daughter Frances Bean Cobain with Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain , who died by suicide at age 27 in 1994.

Courtney Love Says Taylor Swift Is ‘Not Interesting as an Artist’

The rocker is also not a big Lana Del Rey or Madonna fan.

Courtney Love is not a Swiftie.

The Hole frontwoman sat down for an interview with UK publication The Standard recently, where she opened up about which female artists she likes (Patti Smith, Nina Simone, PJ Harvey and Debbie Harry) and which ones she doesn’t, leading with Taylor Swift.

Taylor swift.

While Love is quick to criticize the women she doesn’t like, she also has a history for standing up for women in music. Back in March 2023, the 59-year-old rocker wrote an op-ed for the  Guardian aimed at the lack of female representation in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The piece, titled, “Why Are Women So Marginalised by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?,” opens with Love describing her lifelong obsession with rock n’ roll by stating, “I got into this business to write great songs and have fun.”

Love said that the 2023 nominations provided another reminder of “just how extraordinary a woman must be to make it into the ol’ boys club,” noting that more women were  nominated this year  than at any time in the organization’s 40-year history. That group included Kate Bush, Cyndi Lauper, Sheryl Crow and Missy Elliott, as well as the White Stripes’ drummer Meg White and New Order keyboardist Gillian Gilbert.

“If the Rock Hall is not willing to look at the ways it is replicating the violence of structural racism and sexism that artists face in the music industry, if it cannot properly honour what visionary women artists have created, innovated, revolutionised and contributed to popular music – well, then let it go to hell in a handbag,” Love concluded the piece.

Courtney Love says Taylor Swift is 'not important' and 'not interesting as an artist'

  • Courtney Love said Taylor Swift is "not important" in a new interview with The Standard.
  • "She's probably the Madonna of now, but she's not interesting as an artist," Love said.
  • Love also criticized Lana Del Rey and Beyoncé's music.

Insider Today

Taylor Swift's legion of fans includes rockstars like Stevie Nicks, Paul McCartney, and Dolly Parton — but certainly not Courtney Love.

The former Hole frontwoman didn't hold back while criticizing Swift's musicianship in a recent interview with The Standard.

"Taylor is not important. She might be a safe space for girls, and she's probably the Madonna of now, but she's not interesting as an artist," she said.

"It's great that there are so many successful women in the music industry, but lots of them are becoming a cliché," she added. "Now, every successful woman is cloned, so there is just too much music. They're all the same."

Love didn't stop with her assessment of Swift. She advised Lana Del Rey to "take seven years off" and said simply of Madonna, "I don't like her and she doesn't like me."

Related stories

Love also said she's not a fan of Beyoncé, despite praising the ambition of her new album, " Cowboy Carter ."

"I like the idea of Beyoncé doing a country record because it's about Black women going into spaces where previously only white women have been allowed, not that I like it much," she said. "As a concept, I love it. I just don't like her music."

This isn't the first time Love has publicly condemned a modern superstar. In 2021, she accused Olivia Rodrigo of copying her aesthetic — specifically the cover art for "Live Through This," Hole's seminal 1994 album. She even called the young singer "rude" on social media. (Rodrigo responded that she was "flattered" by Love's attention .)

Nor is this Swift's first rodeo drawing criticism from a Gen X musician. In 2022, Blur and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn erroneously claimed she "doesn't write her own songs," which Swift described as "completely false and so damaging." (Albarn quickly apologized.)

In fact, Swift has written over 60 songs by herself , including the entirety of her 2010 album "Speak Now." She was compelled to do so after the massive success of her sophomore album, "Fearless," caused critics to question her role in the creative process.

"I've had several upheavals in my career," Swift told Rolling Stone . "When I was 18, they were like, 'She doesn't really write those songs.' So my third album I wrote by myself as a reaction to that."

Swift's 11th studio album, " The Tortured Poets Department ," will be released on Friday.

According to credits listed on Apple Music, she cowrote 14 of the album's 16 tracks with either Jack Antonoff, Aaron Dessner, or Florence Welch. (Post Malone also has a feature and writing credit on track one.) Two of the songs were reportedly self-written by Swift: "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys" and "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?"

Courtney Love Disses Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Madonna & Everyone Else

Love took aim at multiple artists in a new interview.

LONDON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 05: Courtney Love attends the "Moonage Daydream" London Premiere at BFI ...

Courtney Love is not a Swiftie — or part of the Beyhive. In a new interview with the UK’s Standard , the controversial rockstar took aim at many of today’s most popular women in music , including Taylor Swift , Beyoncé , and Lana Del Rey, changing her previous stances on them.

Love started off by expressing her dislike for Beyoncé’s music, while also praising the concept for her new album Cowboy Carter . “I like the idea of Beyoncé doing a country record because it’s about Black women going into spaces where previously only white women have been allowed, not that I like it much,” she explained. “As a concept, I love it. I just don’t like her music.”

She then dismissed Swift’s artistry. “Taylor is not important,” she said. She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist.”

This is quite a contradiction, as Love previously praised Swift while wishing her a “happy birthday” in December 2021 on Facebook. Sharing a photo with her “occasional hair twin/neighbor” Swift (and Lorde), Love called her an “aspirational huge role model for many young women.”

Lorde, Courtney Love, and Taylor Swift

Love also changed her mind about Del Rey, saying her recent cover of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” turned her off. “I haven’t liked Lana since she covered a John Denver song, and I think she should really take seven years off,” she said. Love has previously hailed Del Rey as a “musical genius” and even opened for the singer on her Endless Summer Tour in 2015.

And for good measure, Love reignited her longtime feud with Madonna , even giving her a backhanded compliment for one of her most famous movies. “I don’t like her and she doesn’t like me,” she said. “I loved Desperately Seeking Susan , but for the city of New York as much as her.”

Madonna and Courtney Love

Love’s interview was to promote her new BBC Radio 6 show, Courtney Love’s Women , which focuses on the women in music who have shaped her career.

That said, she praised other female artists in her interview, including Patti Smith, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and Blondie’s Debbie Harry — plus the early albums of PJ Harvey and Joni Mitchell, but not beyond those.

Cher in October 2023 – the singer has finally been acknowledged in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Cher, Ozzy Osbourne and A Tribe Called Quest among 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees

Cher finally recognised 60 years after her first recordings, while Mary J Blige, Peter Frampton and Dave Matthews Band are among the other inductees

Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Mary J Blige and A Tribe Called Quest are among the stars to be added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year – many of them rather overdue.

Artists can be added to the US institution 25 years after their first recording, but Cher – who once described her snub by the Hall as “kind of rude” – has had to wait until 60 years after her first releases with Sonny & Cher to be included.

Peter Frampton is another artist who has had a long wait. After debuting in 1972, and scoring one of the best-selling albums of the 1970s in the US with Frampton Comes Alive!, the 74-year-old British artist has eventually been added this year.

Osbourne had already been inducted as a member of Black Sabbath, but now has a second entry acknowledging a solo career that began with 1980 album Blizzard of Ozz. A Tribe Called Quest, one of the foundational groups in hip-hop, are acknowledged 34 years on from their debut album, while Blige, who has topped the US album chart four times, is included after 32 years.

Other inductees include Dave Matthews Band, who have enjoyed a multiplatinum-selling career that began in 1994, racking up seven No 1 albums in a row between 1998 and 2018.

I Want to Know What Love Is hitmakers Foreigner have also been added, acknowledging a career that has resulted in almost 40m album sales in the US. Rounding out the 2024 inductees are the funk, disco and pop band Kool & the Gang. Best known for hits such as Get Down on It and the US No 1 Celebration, they began back in 1969 but continue to tour and released their latest album in 2023.

The Hall’s musical excellence award is this year given to Jimmy Buffett , who died in September 2023; MC5, whose guitarist and bandleader Wayne Kramer died in February; and soul icons Dionne Warwick and Norman Whitfield. The musical influence award is given to three blues artists: American singer Big Mama Thornton, plus British performers Alexis Korner and John Mayall.

The Ahmet Ertegun award is given to Suzanne de Passe, a media mogul who rose through the ranks at Motown Records to become president of its film and TV arm, before spinning it off into a successful production company under her own name.

The year’s diverse range – by Rock Hall standards – of inductees comes as the Hall attempts to broaden its canon of artists. Last year, it was calculated that fewer than 10% of inductees have been women since the awards began in 1986.

If so few Black artists, so few women of colour, are being inducted, then the voting process needs to be overhauled.”

Aged 77, she continues to release new music, with a Christmas album coming out in 2023.
