Few venues can boast such a vast history and schedule as Daytona International Speedway. With three different layouts, the self-proclaimed World Center of Racing has kept fan experience at its heart since its conception in the late 1950s.

Daytona has called itself the “World Center of Racing” for many years. It’s not hard to see why: the circuit’s speedway has been a permanent fixture on the NASCAR schedule, the road course and motorcycle layout host regular events and Lake Lloyd, situated in the infield section of the track, has hosted powerboat racing.

The Daytona International Speedway was built in 1959 by NASCAR founder William France, Sr. as a replacement for the Daytona Beach Road Course. The new banked course allowed for higher speeds and better views for fans. The height of the banking led to a much higher budget than expected, but the circuit opened in February 1959, just ahead of the inaugural Daytona 500.

The track has undergone numerous renovations over the years, including a major development in 1998 which saw lights added around the perimeter, making it the third-largest single lit outdoor sports facility in the world. The new lighting allowed it to host NASCAR’s ever-popular Coke Zero 400 race, which takes place each July close to Independence Day. More recently, in 2016, the circuit underwent a $400 million facelift to improve the fan experience.

Among the most high profile events which take place at the circuit are the Daytona 500, which has been held annually in February in every year since the circuit opened, the Daytona 200 motorcycle race, which first took place at the track in 1961, and the prestigious 24 Hours of Daytona, which has been held early in the year since 1962.

  • Facilities 4.0

More than the miles of shoreline, Daytona is probably best known for the Daytona International Speedway. Since opening in 1959, the complex has been the city's claim to fame, as host to the biggest racing competitions (like February's Daytona 500) and other smaller events throughout the year. On non-event days, you can take a guided tour via tram.

During the half-hour Speedway Tour, you'll take a spin through Daytona International Speedway's infield, pose for a photo at the podium in Gatorade Victory Lane, and stand next to the car of this year's Daytona 500 champion. Tickets for adults cost $19; tickets for kids ages 5 to 12 cost $13 and children ages 4 and younger ride for free. If you're hoping to delve deeper into the speedway's historical sites, consider taking an All Access Tour. You'll have to fork over a bit more coin ($26 for adults; $20 for kids ages 5 to 12), but you'll have the opportunity to check out the media deadline room, peer into the pit stalls and enjoy spectacular views of the trioval and infield from frontstretch seating. Even if you're not much of a racing aficionado, previous travelers said it's still worth a visit. Hoping to get behind the wheel? You can do that here, too. Sign up for the Richard Petty Driving Experience and tear around the 2½-mile-long superspeedway. If you'd rather ride shotgun, you can ask an instructor to take you for a few laps around the track – just be prepared to ride at speeds up to 165 mph. To learn more about available dates and times, check the Richard Petty Driving Experience website , and for more information on the Daytona International Speedway, visit its website .

#1 Daytona Beach

Stretching for more than 23 miles, the "World's Most Famous Beach" is a must-see if you're in Daytona. Situated near the middle of the peninsula, the beach is famous for its large crowds, bustling pier and hard-packed sand. In fact, it's thanks to the sand's firm composition that drivers are allowed to park their cars right on the beach. Though some see this privilege as a major convenience, parents lament the fact the cars create another safety hazard for young children. However, there is a mile-long pedestrian-only zone that surrounds the pier. Beyond the pier you'll also find a variety of shops, bars and restaurants.

The beach is open 24 hours a day to pedestrians, but driving hours are limited to sunrise to sunset (permitting tidal conditions) between Nov. 1 and April 30, and between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. May 1 through Oct. 31. Access to the beach is free, but you will have to shell out $20 per day to drive on the beach from Feb. 1 through Nov. 30. The speed limit on the beach is 10 mph. Pedestrians and drivers should also be mindful of nesting sea turtles from May to October, who typically nest in marked dune areas.

Has Daytona International Speedway survived the NASCAR scoring pylon controversy? We investigated.

DAYTONA BEACH — Remember a couple weeks back and all the hullabaloo over scoring pylons disappearing at NASCAR tracks?

Two weeks back at Texas, it didn’t take long for fans to realize something was missing inside the track.

Hmmm. There’s probably a reason, most folks assumed, and hopefully a replacement coming soon.

Then came the next week at Talladega , where, again, there was no scoring pylon to be found.

Conspiracy? Or just weird coincidence?

Either way, while it might not reach the level of being un-American, it surely assaults the senses for any racetrack regular. No scoring pylon at a race? Might as well take down the inning-by-inning scoreboard at ballparks.

NASCAR ON TV Is there a NASCAR race today? A NASCAR TV schedule for this weekend at Dover

And you had to wonder, how far will this go? Any chance we’ll go to NASCAR’s mothership — Daytona International Speedway — in August or next February and not see scoring pylons?

Well, calm down. So far, so good for Daytona’s two scoring pylons, and don’t look for them to come down anytime soon.

They’re only two years old, for one thing.

And for another, they’re not pylons, but trilons , three-sided info boards erected in the summer of 2022. A visit to the Speedway this week confirmed their ongoing existence.

And since you’re obviously interested, let’s go to the Daytona FAQs to learn about those two py … ooops … trilons.

DAYTONA FISHING ROUNDUP Pompano season means pompano rigs, which aren't just for pompano. True story

∎ Color Capacity is 281 trillion colors

∎ Each leaderboard has a total of 2,211.84 square-feet of active LED

∎ Each LED module measures 14.4 x 14.4 inches

∎ Total number of LED modules for each side of the leaderboard is 512

∎ Each three-sided leaderboard has a total of 1,536 total LED modules

∎ LED Lifetime is 100,000 hours

∎ 256 levels of dimming capabilities

∎ Ability to play separate and/or different content on each side of any of the leaderboards simultaneously

∎ Total weight of the LED Panels per leaderboard is 19,968 lbs.

∎ Content can be displayed in static or motion formats.

Yep, a step or two advanced beyond the Fenway Park score
