Dragon's Tail Hike

A Exhilarating Ponta de São Lourenço Walking Tour

An Epic Hiking Experience

A Self-Guided Audio Tour along the Ponta de São Lourenço Peninsula

The Dragon's Tail Hike will take you on a walk across one of Madeira’s most magnificent peninsula coastlines, Ponta de São Lourenço.

During our walking tour, I’ll introduce you to this amazing outdoor gallery of epic rock formations and contrasting landscapes. Along the way, you’ll hear about the legendary Captain Zarco and his adventures. I’ll tell you how Madeira was discovered, and how Porto Santo Island and Ponta de São Lourenço earned their serendipitous names. On your hike from the Ponta de São Lourenço parking lot to the inspiring lookout point, Miradouro Ponta do Furado, I’ll show you a few good spots where you can pause to catch your breath or take a picture of the spectacular views. I’ll also tell you why I call this hiking trail ‘the Dragon’s Tail’.

Highlights of the Dragon´s Tail Hiking Tour

On this tour, you can look forward to:

• Conquering the summit of Ponta do Furado (if you choose) • Taking in mesmerizing views of the Atlantic ocean, all the way to the end of the São Lourenco peninsula • Seeing the hauntingly beautiful geological scars on cliffs below the São Lourenço viewpoint • Hearing about the world’s largest surviving Laurel forest, in Madeira’s UNESCO World Heritage site • Watching seals frolic in the waves and, if it’s a clear day, getting a glimpse of their home on the Desertas Islands • Learning about the flora and fauna that you might come across • Enjoying various viewpoints including Baia d’Abra

Give yourself two hours to complete this rewarding intermediate hiking trail. That said, you don’t have to be an avid hiker to enjoy it. The walk is also doable if you go at your own pace and take as much time as you need. And please remember to bring a hat, a water bottle and wear some good shoes.

Difficulty Level

It’s an INTERMEDIATE walk with some steps along the way.  The distance covered is approximately 7.4km (there & back).

3 hour walk include stops and “pop-in visits”.   For those not wanting to walk back, there is the option of catching a boat at a charge

Best Time to do the Tour

The ideal time is early morning or late afternoon.  Avoid midday as is no shade is provided along the way.

Dragon's Dogma: How to Fast Travel

Dragon's Dogma features a vast open-world that players can explore and get to know. Throughout the areas that make up this world, however, are numerous enemies that can surprise and overwhelm players. Aside from just running away, the best way to get out of sticky situations or cross vast distances in Dragon's Dogma is usually to fast travel.

Unlocking fast travel, finding the items that allow for it, and establishing unique points to teleport each requires the player to be very familiar with the game. The announcement of a sequel has increased Dragon's Dogma 's player count , bringing new players to this game world. For those who are looking to learn more about fast travel in Dragon's Dogma , this guide is here to help.

Updated April 11th, 2024 by Russ Boswell : Fast Travel can be a bit confusing in Dragon's Dogma 2, but it can be vitally important for players who are looking to make it across the game's expansive map quickly. There are only two methods for fast travel in Dragon's Dogma 2 and it's easy to miss them or misunderstand them, especially for players who are eager to explore. To better understand how to fast travel in Dragon's Dogma 2 , the following guide has been updated to include a companion video.

RELATED: Dragon's Dogma: How to Change Vocation

How to Fast Travel in Dragon's Dogma

The key to teleporting around the world of Dragon's Dogma are Ferrystones and these one-use items can be both found and purchased. Those looking for these items can most reliably find them at The Black Cat in Gran Soren, in the Chamber of Estrangement, and in the Chamber of Remorse. On top of this, those who are playing Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen will find an Eternal Ferrystone (one that never breaks) within their storage.

Speaking with Mountebank, Fournival, Delec, and Joye will bring up the option to purchase Ferrystones for a price between 1,000 and 2,000 gold in the expansion, Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen . Aside from purchasing them, Ferrystones can occasionally be found in the Portcrystal Ring in Gran Soren, on a boat located at the Ruins of Aernst Castle, as well as in the Dragonforged's cave at Hillfigure Knoll. In the post-game world, players will find Ferrystones in the Everfall in chests and as monster drops as well.

Where can Players Fast Travel in Dragon's Dogma?

Heading to the tool section and activating a Ferrystone will bring up the map of the world with the available fast travel locations. The locations that are marked are either the permanent Portcrystal Rings located in cities like Gran Soren or portable Portcrystals that the player has placed. The latter category gives players quite a bit of freedom when it comes to setting a fast travel location. Portable Portcrystals can be placed anywhere except on Bitterblack Isle, within the Witchwood, at any underground location, or within a city.

Portable Portcrystals can be acquired as players make their way through the main quest line of Dragon's Dogma as well as in a handful of other locations with the Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen expansion . Players can find one at the top of the Bluemoon Tower, in the Everfall on the Flameservant's Throne, in the cave of the Dragonforged at Hillfigure Knoll, and just beyond the door in the area under the giant tree near the Witch's House.

Dragon's Dogma is available for PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

A massive storm wreaks havoc on the Unmoored World in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is about the journey, not the destination. It’s about exploring routes you’ve never taken before, camping in the wilderness, and having an unexpected run in with a Minotaur. Quests objectives are also left intentionally vague, forcing you to puzzle things out and speak to as many people as you can. If you could just easily fast travel to obvious quest markers you could certainly check them off your list more efficiently, but then you’d miss out entirely on the adventure of getting there.

[ Ed. note: This post contains spoilers for the Dragon’s Dogma 2 endgame.]

Then, you beat the game and the credits roll. However, if you don’t like that “ending” you can start the apocalypse instead. The sky turns an ugly crimson; the oceans dry up; the dead rise from their ancient graves. It’s rough out there.

Your goals then become much simpler in this Unmoored World . Just go to four points on the map and do two things:

  • Defeat a boss monster
  • Help any nearby townsfolk evacuate to a central city

To make this task easier, the game tweaks or outright removes a bunch of its mechanical friction. More fast travel hubs called portcrystals appear on the map, making it much easier to just fast travel to each quest marker. This wouldn’t have mattered much earlier in the game since you need to use up a rare ferrystone each time you fast travel, but now, monsters drop this item regularly. With all the lakes, rivers, and oceans dried up, you aren’t forced to take out-of-the-way bridges to reach your destination, either.

As you rescue each town, you also begin to assemble a central hub town that makes optimizing your gear much easier. All four blacksmith types eventually reside there, along with the duplicator and the Dragonforged. Instead of running all around the map to craft the best weapons, everybody you need is a few efficient steps away. It’s also much easier to get the best enhancement materials since high level monsters start prowling everywhere, especially in the dried up oceans.

A dragon recoils from damage in Dragon’s Dogma 2

I didn’t actually go to the Unmoored World right away. Instead, I started a new game plus after defeating the Dragon so I could experience some of the quests I’d missed from earlier in the game and level up more of my vocations. So after weeks of playing the game and absorbing complaints about its fast travel and “game-breaking” microtransactions , the Unmoored World’s design choices almost felt like a response. Here’s everything you were screaming for: easy fast travel, an efficient hub world, and no-nonsense quest design!

This tracks with the game’s narrative too. You’ve broken all the rules to get to this place, so the game’s rules are broken too. You’ve taken on god(?) and ushered in a new, albeit broken, world where the game doesn’t get in your way of completing your tasks and doing what you want.

But once you finish the simple objectives in front of you and there’s nothing left to do, eating all of this dessert gets boring. You aren’t really seeing the countryside anymore – just blinking from portcrystal to portcrystal. You’ll quickly tire of returning the undead to their graves since they never stop rising from the ground. You can’t even enjoy camping with your pawns anymore because of the aforementioned undead and also because time is itself a crucial resource as you rush to rescue everyone while resting as little as possible. Eventually, the day/night cycle blurs into one unending twilight and you can’t rest at all anymore as time figuratively stops.

You can play this way as long as you’ve got wakestones to heal yourself, farming high level monsters to enhance your gear, but it eventually feels hollow without any of Dragon Dogma’s 2 weird charms . It’s fun to revel in the excesses of the late game but it also puts into sharp relief why the developers made the decisions they did about fast travel and quest design. When you finally tire of this broken but very efficient world, you can end the apocalypse by starting a new game plus, more ready than ever to just enjoy the journey.
