Dwejra, Gozo (the Inland Sea and Azure Window)

Dwejra is a small location on the West coast of the island of Gozo , known for its “inland sea” (small bay surrounded by high cliffs) and as the site where the Azure Window (naturally formed rock arch on the coast) once stood proudly.

A little further South, the wide open bay where you can find Fungus Rock is officially called Dwejra Bay and is “guarded” by a watch tower built by the Knights of Malta.

The name Dwejra comes from a small house that once stood on top of the cliffs surrounding the inland sea. With its unique natural features, Dwejra Bay is a popular destination for tourists, local snorkellers and divers. The bay is home to rich and diverse wildlife and underwater features and has a very rugged feel.

It’s one of my favourite places to spend time in Gozo and is listed on my list of 25+ Things to do in Gozo .

How to Get to Dwejra Bay

Although you can reach Dwejra Bay by public transport (bus route 311 from Victoria Gozo ), it’s far easier to reach with a rental car , which is recommended anyway if you’re looking to discover Gozo Island as a whole. You will find a free car park on-site.

Local tip: If you are using Google Maps as a navigation tool, set “Azure Window” rather than “Dwejra Bay” because the main parking area at Dwejra is located further down the road, a little further North of Dwejra Bay. You need to drive through the centre of San Lawrenz (village) before you get to Dwejra Gozo.

Quick Facts

  • Scenes from the first series of Game of Thrones were filmed nearby, with the Azure Window as a backdrop.
  • There are a number of locations around the Maltese islands where you can witness the most beautiful sunsets, and Dwejra Bay could easily be a favourite among such locations.
  • Close to the watchtower, there are remains of salt pans carved into the rock that were used to raise money to fund the building of the watchtower itself.

Inland sea and small beach

The inland sea at Dwejra is a relatively small bay surrounded by high cliffs and connected by an 80-metre-long cave that leads you out to the open sea. It’s truly a place that evokes awe, and that leaves an impression.

Several small boathouses can be found along the shoreline, housing the locals’ fishing boats.

You can take a short boat trip through the sea cave, out to the open sea and the nearby Fungus Rock. The boat tour costs €5 per person for a duration of 15-20 minutes. Boat trips are operating every day (including public holidays), except when the sea is rough.

The departure of the boat trip is located on the pebbled beach of the inland sea. The boat leaves the inland sea and goes through the tunnel leading to the open Mediterranean Sea.

Then, you will see rock formations, whose one is said to look like a crocodile. The captain will show you different caves, rocks, and the impressive cliff face and tell you some funny stories about them. The boat tours also take you to caves reminding you a bit of the Blue Grotto in Malta .

  • Unique location with stunning views
  • Clean, clear water and a great place for snorkelling
  • Rarely gets busy, so great if you like peace and quiet.
  • The beach itself is pretty small and is pebbled rather than sandy. You can lie down on a towel here but don’t expect it to be a good spot for sunbathing
  • Not the easiest place to swim without a snorkel mask; since it’s rocky and rather shallow in most places, it’s tough to gauge what’s under the surface.
  • All in all, not very family-friendly – great for couples who are looking for something a little bit different, however.

The “Inland Sea” at Dwejra is one of the best beaches in Gozo (in my book, at least!)

The inland sea at Dwejra has a small pebbly beach and makes for a great spot to swim and snorkel.

Azure Window

The Azure Window at Dwejra was one of the most popular tourist attractions that Gozo Island had to offer until March 2017. Since the early 2000s, it became more obvious that rough weather and natural erosion were taking their toll on the structure . Several pieces had broken off, and the top of the arch looked increasingly fragile.

Several geological studies concluded that there was no feasible way to keep the Azure Window from eventually (partially) collapsing, with the top of the arch being the primary reason for concern.

As we learned in March 2017, during a spell of bad weather and very rough seas, its column turned out to be the weakest part, with the whole structure collapsing into the sea.

The day will be remembered by many locals, and I will myself as well. Sure, it was just a rock formation, and its days were numbered, but somehow the Maltese and particularly the Gozitans grew up with the Azure Window being an icon of Malta and had grown very fond of it.

Considering the events, there are a few positives:

  • No one was injured or lost their life. Despite the warnings and threats of fines, many tourists insisted on climbing on top of the arch and had the timing been worse there would have been more reason to be sad about the events of that day.
  • It seems that the diving community may not be as sad about the collapse of the Azure Window. The area has become an even more interesting dive site than it already was (thanks to the nearby Blue Hole – more on that below).

Still want to get an idea of what Azure Window looked like? Head to Wied il-Mielaħ , located in the north of Għarb. This natural arch might not be as big and impressive as the Dwejra Window was once, but it’s still a beautiful place and a natural gem.

Wied il-Mielaħ is still not very touristy, and for that reason, it is less easily accessible than Dwejra Bay. It is located at the end of a narrow road lined with terraced fields and can only be reached by car (unless you are into hiking – in that case, you can walk from Għarb or Ta’ Pinu). To watch the window itself, you need to climb down the stairs.

The Azure Window (Gozo)

Fungus Rock

Fungus Rock, known locally as Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral (The General’s Rock), is a 60-metre high rock feature in Dwejra Bay that is known for a particular type of flowery plant that was thought to possess healing properties in the times of the Knights of St. John  and was therefore considered to be precious and of high value. The unauthorised access was punishable by death or life on the galleys, and to make climbing the rock more difficult, Grandmaster de Pinto ordered the sides of the rock to be smoothed over.

Despite its common name (its Latin name being Cynomorium coccineum ), this rare species of plant isn’t actually a fungus, although its shape would easily make you believe it is. Because the plant is found mostly on Fungus Rock, the location is a nature reserve nowadays.

The Blue Hole

The Blue Hole refers to a natural, 10-meter-wide inland sea pool right in front of the former location of the Azure Window at Dwejra Bay. The Blue Hole leads into a deep crevice that opens up into the open sea, making it a popular dive site for local and foreign diving enthusiasts alike. The site is home to several species of fish and other underwater fauna, such as parrotfish, bream, Moray eel, lobster, octopus and much more.

If you are planning to swim or snorkel in the Blue Hole, note that it is dangerous when the sea is rough. In case of windy or rough weather, prefer swimming in the inland sea instead.

Dwejra Tower

Dwejra Tower, one of the Knights’ coastal watchtowers , sits on a vantage point overlooking Fungus Rock. Used as a method of guarding the coast of the Maltese islands against attacks from the sea, this particular tower was built in 1652 during the reign of Grandmaster Lascaris.

The purpose of the watchtower was to give warnings of enemy approaches, such as pirates and corsairs. When such approaches were sighted, the men inside could signal other watchtowers by using fire at night or smoke during the day.

The Dwejra watchtower was built on a square base with two floors and a turret on the roof from where you can admire the fantastic views of the surrounding area. Before the steep external steps were built, the only way to get into the tower was via a retractable ladder through the top floor–this offered security to the men inside in case the enemy managed to make a landing.

The Dwejra Watch Tower with its flag hoisted to indicate that it's open to visitors.

The top floor served as a guardroom and living quarters for a garrison of up to four men. The basement was used for storage, while a small gunpowder store was kept on the roof. A water reservoir was dug into the rock underneath the tower.

During the times of the Knights, the salt pans in front of the Tower served to raise money to cover maintenance costs for the tower.

After the period of the Knights, the strategic position of the tower ensured that it was not abandoned. It was used during the 18th century and later manned by the Royal Malta Fencible Artillery between 1839 and 1873.

During the summer of 1914, Maltese troops from the King’s Own Malta Regiment and the Royal Malta Artillery were dispatched to the coastal watchtowers and Dwejra Tower was manned by No. 3 Company.

During the Second World War, the Tower was used by the British as an Observation Post.

The tower is accessible to the public all year round, on Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It’s easy to confirm that the tower is open to visitors, with a flag being flown atop the structure during opening hours.

History of the Inland Sea

The history of the Inland Sea is as fascinating as its breathtaking beauty. The origins of this unique geological formation can be traced back millions of years ago. It is believed that the collapse of a limestone cave roof led to the creation of the Inland Sea, forming a natural channel connecting the sea to the land.

Throughout the centuries, the Inland Sea played a crucial role in the lives of the locals. It served as a safe anchorage for fishermen and sailors, providing them with a sheltered area to unload their catch and repair their boats. The calm and protected waters of the lagoon made it an ideal spot for fishermen to set sail and return with bountiful catches.

During the Roman period, the Inland Sea was a popular location for salt production. Salt pans were constructed along its shores, and the sea served as a source of saltwater that was evaporated to obtain the precious mineral. The salt industry flourished in Gozo for centuries, and remnants of this ancient activity can still be seen today.

In more recent history, the Inland Sea and Dwejra Bay gained international fame as a filming location. The stunning landscapes and unique rock formations attracted filmmakers from around the world. One of the most well-known productions shot here was the popular TV series “Game of Thrones,” where Dwejra stood in as the setting for the Dothraki wedding scene.

Unfortunately, in 2017, the iconic Azure Window, a natural limestone arch standing tall above the Inland Sea, collapsed due to natural erosion. This event marked a significant change in the landscape but also served as a reminder of the transient nature of geological formations.

Today, the Inland Sea continues to captivate visitors with its rich history and majestic beauty. Exploring this natural wonder allows you to step back in time and appreciate the integral role it has played in the lives of the people of Gozo throughout the centuries. Whether you are interested in history, geology, or simply in awe of its beauty, the Inland Sea is a testament to the enduring fascination of nature’s wonders.

Geographical Features of the Inland Sea

The Inland Sea boasts a stunning array of geographical features that make it a truly remarkable destination. Located in the western part of Gozo, it is a unique lagoon that combines the beauty of the sea with the serenity of an inland lake.

The most prominent feature of the Inland Sea is its connection to the open sea through a narrow and magnificent tunnel. This natural tunnel, known as the Azure Window before its collapse, allowed seawater to flow into the lagoon, creating a harmonious blend of freshwater and saltwater. The tunnel was formed as a result of the collapse of a limestone cave roof, leaving behind an awe-inspiring geological formation.

The lagoon itself is surrounded by towering cliffs that rise majestically from the water’s edge. These cliffs, composed of limestone, add a dramatic and picturesque element to the landscape. They provide a sense of seclusion and tranquility, shielding the Inland Sea from the bustle of the outside world.

At the heart of the Inland Sea lies a small rocky island. This island, known as Fungus Rock, is home to unique plant species and has an intriguing history. It was once believed that a rare and valuable medicinal fungus, known as the Malta Fungus, grew exclusively on this rock. The Knights of St. John would harvest the fungus and use it to make remedies for various ailments.

The Inland Sea also boasts a stunning natural phenomenon known as the Blue Hole. This underwater sinkhole is a diver’s paradise, offering a glimpse into an underwater world filled with marine life and coral formations. The Blue Hole is connected to the Inland Sea by a narrow underwater tunnel, providing a unique and exhilarating diving experience.

With its combination of the open sea, limestone cliffs, an inner lagoon, and the captivating Blue Hole, the Inland Sea offers a diverse and awe-inspiring landscape. Whether you view it from the cliffs above or immerse yourself in its depths, the geographical features of the Inland Sea are sure to leave a lasting impression.

Flora and Fauna in the Inland Sea

The Inland Sea is not only a visual marvel but also a thriving ecosystem that supports a wide variety of flora and fauna. The unique combination of saltwater and freshwater creates a diverse habitat that is home to numerous species, both in and out of the water.

Under the crystal-clear waters of the Inland Sea, a vibrant underwater world awaits. Scuba divers and snorkelers are treated to a spectacle of marine life, including colorful fish, sea anemones, coral formations, and even the occasional octopus or moray eel. The Blue Hole, with its deeper depths and underwater tunnel, is particularly renowned for its biodiversity and is considered a haven for diving enthusiasts.

Above water, the rugged cliffs surrounding the Inland Sea provide nesting sites for various bird species. Birdwatchers can spot seagulls, cormorants, and even the occasional falcon or peregrine falcon. The presence of Fungus Rock adds to the biodiversity, with small plant species thriving in the crevices and cracks of the rocky surface.

Within the lagoon itself, you may spot numerous fish species swimming near the surface. The calm and shallow waters of the Inland Sea provide an ideal environment for small fish to thrive. Hermit crabs scuttle along the shoreline, while clams and other bivalves can be found hidden amongst the rocks.

In terms of vegetation, the cliffs surrounding the Inland Sea are adorned with hardy plants that have adapted to the harsh coastal conditions. You’ll find an array of Mediterranean shrubs and grasses clinging to the rock faces, adding a touch of greenery to the dramatic landscape. The presence of these plants not only adds to the visual appeal but also provides a habitat for insects and small mammals.

The waters of the Inland Sea are also home to seagrass meadows, which play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance. These meadows provide a nursery for juvenile fish, serve as a feeding ground for herbivorous marine animals, and help stabilize the sediments on the seabed.

Preserving the delicate ecosystem of the Inland Sea is of utmost importance. Visitors are encouraged to respect the environment and follow sustainable practices, such as responsible diving and fishing practices. By doing so, we can ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy the incredible flora and fauna that call the Inland Sea their home.

Dwejra Bay Gozo: Discovering its Natural Beauty

Have you ever heard of a stunning place called Dwejra ? Well, if you haven’t, you’re in luck! In this ultimate guide to some of Malta and Gozo’s most spectacular locations, I will be taking you through a typical visit to Dwejra Bay , and we’ll be letting you in on all its secrets, gems, wonders, and, ultimately, how you can make the most out of your trip.

Why Dwejra Bay is Worth Visiting

The beauty of Dwejra Bay is simply unmatched. Located on the north-western coast of the island of Gozo in the limits of San Lawrenz, it has been regarded as one of Gozo’s most extraordinary attractions that many tourists love—and with good reason!

In a nutshell, you can say that it is an outdoor museum that combines a good dose of natural history, archaeology , and geology all together through famous landmarks such as the Inland Sea, the Fungus Rock, the Azure Window and the Dwejra Watchtower.

How to get to Dwejra Bay

So, first things first. How can you make your way to Dwejra? Luckily, there are plenty of options that can help you get there in no time.

Tuk-Tuk and Quad Tours with Yippee

We’re the #1 tour provider in Gozo, and our Quad Bike tours in Gozo stop at Dwejra. In short, you’re guaranteed a fun day out with us! All major stops in Dwejra, such as the Inland Sea and Fungus Rock (San Lawrenz), are included in our stops.

Since Dwejra is located within easy reach from Victoria (the "capital" of Gozo) , public transport is also available. Take the 311 route from Victoria and then get off at the Dwejra bus stop. The trip lasts approximately 25 minutes.

You can also get there by car. Simply follow the signs that will guide you to San Lawrenz and, finally, Dwejra Valley. Visitors can park their cars in the parking area that is near main sites such as the Inland Sea.

Highlights of Dwejra Bay

Any trip to Gozo is jam-packed with several highlights that will certainly delight locals and tourists alike; A visit to Dwejra Bay is no exception. Here’s what’s in store for you:

  • Fantastic views
  • Swim in the inland sea beach
  • A boat trip from the Dwejra inland sea
  • The historic Dwejra tower
  • St Anne’s Chapel
  • The former site of the Azure Window
  • The Fungus Rock
  • GoT Filming Location
  • Dive or swim in the Blue Hole
  • The Coral Gardens Dive Site
  • Watching a spectacular sunset
  • A walk along the cliffs

Remembering Dwejra Bay’s Azure Window

As many locals know, Dwejra Bay is famous for the Azure Window/the Dwejra Window or, as it’s also known in Maltese, It-Tieqa Zerqa. For many years, the imposing natural arch sat at the tip of a headland known as Dwejra Point and was considered one of the major landmarks of the Maltese Islands.

What’s more, the Azure Window and the surrounding Mediterranean Sea served as a breathtaking backdrop for several big productions and films. Game of Thrones fans will surely remember the Dothraki wedding of Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen. Adding to this, the Azure Window has also made an appearance in Clash of the Titans, The Count of Monte Cristo, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, and The Odyssey.

Despite the wonder that this landmark has emulated for many years, the arch collapsed on 8th March 2017 during a storm. All that remains are the memories and photos some of us are lucky to have. If you look closely, you might even see a cliff face that appeared on the rocks following the collapse of the Azure Window from the mainland.

There's a similar natural rock arch that's survived the violence of rough seas, which is fairly easy to reach on the outskirts of Gharb: The Wied il-Mielah Window

The Island’s Watchtower

Just off the road leading to the inland sea is the imposing Dwejra Tower , another historical landmark that was built in 1652 during the administration of Grandmaster Giovanni Paolo Lascaris.

When compared to Malta, it’s important to highlight that Gozo has always been substantially undefended. As the history books tell us, Gozo has sadly had its fair share of pirate attacks, to the point where the population was taken into slavery.

With this in mind, this landmark acted as an observation post to protect the surrounding environment from any enemy attacks. Equipped with three 6-pounder guns, the tower’s observer on duty communicated with other defences through fire and smoke.

By 1744, access to the Fungus Rock —also known as the General’s Rock or Il-Gebla tal-General in Maltese, was prohibited during the reign of Grandmaster Pinto. This prevented thieves or anyone who wasn’t authorised to climb by the Knights of St John. Additionally, there was another reason why accessing Fungus Rock was illegal at the time.

The nearby presence of the fabled General’s root plant, Cynomorium coccineum generated a lot of interest due to its healing properties that were able to cure several diseases. Any trespassers who were caught climbing were either condemned to rowing the Order’s gallery benches for life or sentenced to death. If you’re wondering how the Fungus Rock got its name, here’s a fun fact: The Order of St John thought it was a fungus that eventually became known as Fungus melitensis.

Until 1873, the Dwejra Tower still served as an observation post while the soldiers from the Royal Malta Fencible Artillery were assigned to it. Following this, the tower was slowly collapsing and was constantly being vandalised. Nevertheless, the non-governmental and non-profit Din l-Art Helwa restored it in 1999.

Nowadays, people who visit the site can enjoy stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and snap a photo or two for the photo album!

Swimming in the Inland Sea

Along with all the magnificent sights you can see when you visit Dwejra Bay, you can’t miss out on a swim or a boat trip in the Inland Sea.

Also known as Il-Qawra , the Inland Sea is a lagoon of seawater that comes through a natural tunnel, sheltered by the famous pebbly beach and high cliffs. What’s so remarkable about this marvel is that it was most likely formed when a geological fault in the limestone created a sea cave, and as a result of that, the roof disappeared beneath the waves.

The inland sea is a great swimming and snorkelling spot for all the family, especially if you have children. The lagoon is quite shallow until you get close to the 80-metre-long tunnel leading to the open sea. Once you exit the tunnel, the depth goes up to 35 metres. If you enjoy experiencing life underwater, the inland sea dive certainly doesn’t disappoint.

A Diver’s Paradise - The Blue Hole in Dwejra Bay

Besides the inland sea beach, Dwejra’s Blue Hole is probably the most captivating and well-known scuba diving spot on the island. With its crystal clear waters shining so bright under the warm sun, the winds and waves remarkably carved out this natural rock formation many centuries ago. Its shape is quite peculiar, as you can say that it's an upright underwater tunnel.

If you’re interested in visiting this fascinating site, make sure you ditch the flip-flops and wear a good pair of walking shoes instead so that you can safely go over the sharp edges and rocky surfaces of the coralline limestone rocks. The passage carved through the rocks should make the trek down to the attraction slightly easier.

Voted ‘Best Dive’ of the Mediterranean multiple times, the Blue Hole is a treasure trove of wonders and well and truly a diver’s paradise. Trust us when we say that divers of all levels are promised an unforgettable experience.

Upon arriving at the site, your eyes might deceive you into thinking that the blue hole is carved into the rocks. In reality, an underwater archway located 10 metres below the surface connects it to the open sea. As you slowly descend from the shore, you’ll instantly find yourself in the Blue Hole, with a huge archway starting at 6 metres that ultimately extends to a 15-metre depth. That’s when the real fun starts.

Did you know there is a sea cave at the bottom of the blue hole? In short, the sea life and scenery that await once you go through the cave entrance are a sight to behold. In other words, if you’re able to do this spectacular dive, make sure you get a torch and a Go-Pro with you!

Exploring Dwejra’s Coral Gardens

We all know that the Blue Hole dive is simply spellbinding, but did you know that there is another dive site that’s worthy of a visit? The Coral Gardens are exactly what you imagine them to be.

Once again, ensure your Go-Pro is ready to snap the spectacular sea swimming beneath the waves. From damselfish, thick grey mullets, wrasses, sea urchins, jellyfish, and starfish to tuna—as the song we all know and love goes, “Life under the sea is better than anything they got up there.”

Needless to say, we highly recommend divers of all levels to explore the everlasting beauty of the Blue Hole and Coral Gardens, but we still urge you to be mindful of the w ind conditions and the rough seas since these sites are not closed off from the open sea.

Hiking from Dwejra Bay to the Xwejni Salt Pans

If you have some time, a hike from Dwejra to the Xwejni Salt Pans should be high on your Gozo bucket list.

Along with Dwejra Bay and the many other marvels that the island has to offer, the iconic patterns and shimmering waters of the Xwejni Salt Pans are certainly a sight to see. Depending on your pace, this 14 Km trek should last around three or four hours.

The Sunsets and Seascapes of Dwejra

As the evening draws in, there’s simply nothing taking in all the memories of your day as you sit back and experience t he most spectacular sunset in Dwejra Bay.

Whether you just want to relax and enjoy it from your car or whether you want to take a cliff walk along the coast, watching the sunset over the nearby Fungus Rock and the Inland Sea is nothing short of magical.

Simply put, it’s one of those things that must be seen to be believed.

Why is Dwejra Bay in Gozo Worth Visiting?

Gozo Dwejra Bay is a nature lover’s paradise, with plenty of activities and sights to enjoy. The Azure Window used to be the most iconic sight in Malta. But, it collapsed during a storm in 2017.

Yet, even without it, Dwejra Bay is still a fantastic place to visit. I always visit Dwejra Bay when I come to Gozo. I love coming here during the magical golden hour when the site is quiet and the sky red.

Tips Before Going to Gozo Dwejra Bay

There are a few things you should know before you visit Dwejra Bay.

You should wear shoes that are appropriate for walking on sharp cliffs.

The sun in Malta is very intense, so wear a hat and sun protection.

If you plan on swimming, bring your snorkelling gear. Also, take sandals or aqua shoes since the rocks to get into the water are sharp.

You’ll find ice cream stands, sandwich kiosks, and a restaurant. No grocery stores are nearby, so bring food and drinks.

It’s dangerous to go swimming if it’s windy or wavy. You won’t be able to exit the water. There aren’t any ladders.

Respect the environment and wildlife. Make sure you don’t leave any trash.

How to Get to Dwejra Bay?

Dwejra Bay is on the west side of Gozo, and it is easy to access by car. Parking is plentiful. Buses are also available from Victoria , but they don’t run late in the evening and only run every hour.

  • Location:  link to  Google Maps
  • Nearest bus stop:   Dwejra
  • Walking distance from the bus stop:  50 meters
  • Frequency of the buses:  every hour. Buses don’t run late at night, so check the timetable.
  • Parking available:  in the car park  here

You can also visit Dwejra and many other Gozo attractions on a Jeep Tour. Book it below!

Best Time to Visit Dwejra Bay

The ideal time to visit Dwejra Bay in the summer is the evening. When the sun dips below the horizon, the area becomes so quiet. So enjoy the beauty of the place while watching the sun disappear.

Dwejra Bay - Sunset

It’s also an excellent idea to visit it in the morning when the sun isn’t so intense. Then, you can swim and enjoy the views without feeling too hot.

During other times of the year, you can visit Dwejra Bay anytime. In winter and spring, the landscape is alive with lush greenery and vibrant blooms. Unfortunately, the restaurant and kiosks will likely be closed during this time.

Dwejra Bay in Gozo: Map

Here’s a map with the main sites of Dwejra Bay.

Dwejra Tower

Crocodile rock, fungus rock.

The Inland Sea is a shallow 60-meter-wide lagoon. It has an 80-meter tunnel that connects the lagoon to the Mediterranean Sea.

Scuba diving is very popular in the Dwejra Inland Sea. However, those who do not want to dive can take a boat trip through the tunnel and explore caves along Gozo’s western shore.

Dwejra Bay - Inland Sea Tunnel

When the sun shines through the tunnel connecting the lagoon to the sea, you get a spectacular view of the inland sea.

I also recommend hiking around the Dwejra Inland Sea. You can experience a stunning panoramic view of the Inland Sea, the cliffs, and the caves from the top.

The Blue Hole in Gozo Dwejra Bay is a cave without a roof, but the sunlight shines through the water. Take a look at it from the top first.

The viewpoint of the Blue Hole is here . On a still day, I love watching scuba divers’ silver bubbles break the water’s surface. Also, looking at the same spot from up high offers an entirely different view.

Dwejra Bay - Blue Hole

To get to the Blue Hole, you will have to walk down some steps through rocks. At one point, you will have to go along the cliffs on sharp rocks. That part might be covered in water, which is why sandals or aqua shoes come in handy.

Swimming in the Blue Hole is best done from the hole’s edge. Barefoot might not be comfortable due to the rocks. Also, there might be sea urchins.

I love snorkelling here. It is impressive to look at the sea depths through an underwater window. However, do not dive through it because it’s too deep and dangerous.

Swimming in the open sea behind the blue hole is also possible. Make sure you have your snorkelling gear. You can swim along the wall and see plenty of fish. At sunset, the light is beautiful.

You can swim left towards the Coral Gardens . Tunnels and other rock formations are present underwater, as well as many different fish species.

There are many snorkelling spots in Malta and Gozo, but my favourite is the Blue Hole and Coral Gardens. If you enjoy snorkelling, I check out my guide to the finest snorkelling spots in Malta and Gozo.

Next, you can visit the Dwejra Tower . From there, you can see fantastic views of Dwejra Bay. It was built in 1652 by the Knights of St John to protect the island from invasion. It has three 6-pounder guns. The tower was restored from 1997 to 1999 and is now open to the public.

Dwejra Bay - Dwejra Tower

From the Dwejra Tower, you can see Crocodile Rock . Crocodile Rock, another popular dive spot, is shaped like a crocodile hunting in the Mediterranean Sea. It is mid-way between Fungus Rock and the Blue Hole. Can you spot it?

When standing in front of the Fungus Rock , I can’t help but wonder about its infamous namesake, the Maltese Fungus.

The Knights of St John found a plant and misidentified it as a fungus. It was a parasitic plant, but they believed it had healing properties.

They even gave it to renowned noblemen and visitors. Crossing the border of this rock was a severe offence – those caught did not get three years in jail!

Dwejra Bay - Sunset at Dwejra Bay

Hike along Dwejra Bay

You can take a pleasant coastal walk. I like to watch the sunset on this peninsula. Take it slowly over the rocks because they may be slippery.

The bay is worth taking a stroll around if you’re feeling up to it. Below is a photo of one of my favourite viewpoints . There won’t be many people there, so it will be peaceful, and you’ll have a unique perspective of Dwejra Bay.

Dwejra Bay - Fungus Rock

Be sure you don’t miss out on Dwejra Bay in Gozo, Malta’s sister island. There are lots to see and do here, from swimming in the Dwejra’s Inland Sea and the Blue Hole to hiking and climbing the Dwejra Tower.

Be sure to bring snorkelling gear, aqua shoes, sun protection and a hat.

People swimming in the Blue Hole Malta Gozo.

This location has long fascinated visitors, artists, geologists and naturalists for its rugged beauty, its scientific interest and its combination of unusual features.

This is one of the locations where people swim in the inland sea lagoon. Less people swim in the open sea since the rocks are uneven and sharp. There is a place close to the Azure Window from where one can have a swim. It is the place from where the divers go down for underwater dives.

what can you do while here

Take a boat trip and see dwejra’s other gems from the open sea.

  • At this point a light patch in the see will show where all the rocks which have fallen stand on each other at the bottom of the se before they are covered with sea life.
  • Another window carved out of the rocks is visible, which is being called as the second Dwejra window.
  • Between this window and the collapsed window you will be able to see a number of grottos whose walls are lined with star coral (In Maltese it is qroll tad-dell). The water in these caves is of a distinctive azure hue, resulting from the rays of sunlight that bounce off the underwater rocks.
  • The 65 metres high Fungus Rock. In 1992 declared a natural reserve.
  • The sharp drop of the cliffs formation along the coast of Dwejra.

The Inland Sea

An almost circular lagoon of sea water is formed behind a very high rock formation connected to the Mediterranean sea through an opening at sea level which is wide enough to allow the passage of boats. It was formed through a pattern of geological faulting has by time created a fantastic land forms.

The lagoon water is not so deep but on approaching the tunnel leading to the open Mediterranean sea, the water becomes deeper. On the outside it drops up to 35 meters.

The lagoon is full of pebbles and stones but attracts so many for swimming both locals and foreigners. One other feature of this area is the tranquillity, natural features that you will love it.

The lagoon is ideal for snorkelling and swimming. It is suggested to stay away from the small jetty and the cave entrance due to the flow of boats. After heavy rains, the water visibility becomes nearly zero due to the silt carried by the rain into the lagoon.

Fishermen have always used the inland sea as a mooring point for their boats and their huts to store their fishing nets. Boat trips are available to go on the outer area of the rocks up to the Fungus rock, the Azure Window and the natural formation of the rocks along the coast.

The Boat trips Description

On a quiet day it may be best to check with the boat owner to see how many passengers he requires before he sets off

.The 20 to 30 minute boat trips leave from the jetties in the Inland sea travel through the 105 metre long tunnel to the open Mediterranean sea, where you

  • Get magnificent views of the shear vertical Dwejra cliffs
  • Enter a couple of caves
  • View where the Azure Window once stood
  • View Fungus rock

The boats are usually the traditional Maltese boat, the 'luzzu', with there bright colours and eye painted on the prow to ward off the devil and evil.

Dwejra Bay & Dwejra Point

Top choice in Gozo

The collapsed cavern of Dwejra Bay has been invaded by the sea, and is guarded by the brooding bulk of Fungus Rock . A path below Dwejra (Qawra) Tower leads to a flight of stairs cut into the rock, leading down to a little slipway on the edge of the bay. There is good swimming and sunbathing here.

For even more peace, you can hike right around to the cliff top on the far side of the bay, for a view encompassing Fungus Rock and Dwejra Point and, between them, Crocodile Rock (seen from near Dwejra Tower it looks like a crocodile's head).

The broad horizontal shelf of rock to the south of Dwejra Point has been eroded along the geological boundary between the globigerina limestone and the lower coralline limestone – the boundary is marked by a layer of many thousands of fossilised scallop shells and sand dollars (a kind of flattened, disc-shaped sea urchin).

Boat Trip Dwejra (Gozo, Malta)

The inland sea at Dwejra is a relatively small bay surrounded by high cliffs and connected by a 60-metre long cave that leads you out to open sea. It’s truly a place that evokes awe and that leaves an impression. Several small boathouses can be found along the shoreline, housing the locals’ fishing boats. It is possible to take a boat trip through the cave, out to open sea and past the Azure Window and the nearby Fungus Rock .

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

dwejra boat trips photos

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

dwejra boat trips photos

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

dwejra boat trips photos

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

dwejra boat trips photos

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

dwejra boat trips photos

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

dwejra boat trips photos

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

dwejra boat trips photos

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
