Edmunds' Expert Review

  • Epic interior space, powerful engine line-up and a long list of standard equipment.
  • Its HUGE, which means poor gas mileage and difficult to maneuver within city limits.

The Excursion is an entirely new SUV based on Ford's F-250 Super Duty truck platform. It is the largest vehicle of its type, outgunning even the Chevy Suburban in terms of overall size and interior space.

Edmunds says

Too much truck for too many people. Buy a Suburban if you need a nine-passenger SUV that can tow heavy stuff.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2000 Ford Excursion Limited 4dr SUV 4WD and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of N/A undefined in North Dakota.

Vehicle overview.

In a classic "bigger is better" move, Ford has decided to up the SUV ante by producing the largest soccer-mom mobile yet. The Excursion offers more interior room and cargo capacity than the previous heavy-weight title holder, the Chevrolet Suburban. At the same time, Ford is touting the Excursion's "earth-friendly" aspects like an engine line-up that meets LEV standards and the fact that 85 percent of the Excursion, by weight, is recyclable (never mind that the remaining 15 percent of an Excursion still equals about 2.5 Honda Civics). The Excursion's base engine is a 5.4-liter V8 on two-wheel-drive models or a 6.8-liter V10 on models equipped with four-wheel drive. Optional with either drivetrain is a 7.3-liter V8 diesel that makes 235 horsepower and 500 foot-pounds of earth-shaking torque. All engines come with a four-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment; no manual transmission is offered in the Excursion. Two trim levels are available. The base XLT model includes a three-piece rear door, running boards, remote keyless entry, driver and front-passenger airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, an AM/FM/cassette/CD stereo, six cupholders, power door locks, power windows, an overhead console, cloth seats, a 40/20/40 split-bench front seat and a third-row removable bench seat. Angle up to the Limited trim level and you get leather seating surfaces, front captain's chairs, woodgrain trim, rear-seat audio controls, a trip computer, power rear-quarter windows, 10 cupholders, aluminum wheels and illuminated running boards. Additional options like heated seats, heated exterior mirrors, a six-disc CD changer and a limited-slip axle can be ordered as well. Since it's based off the F-250 Super Duty (the front doors, fenders, and hood will swap between them), Ford was able to develop the Excursion with a bare-minimum investment of company funds. This means a large profit margin for each Excursion sold, even by SUV standards. These same market forces were behind the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator and Lexus LX470. We've begun to wonder how far this SUV thing can go, but if people keep buying them, automakers will keep building them.

Ford Excursion

ford excursion

No matter what the new Ford Excursion's virtues may be--and there are many--a fair number of folks seem to have a problem seeing past the sheer mass of this thing. Some of these same folks raised an almighty furor when Ford's new imperial-size utility vehicle--now the absolute monarch of the motorized mastodons--was unveiled earlier this year. They portrayed the Excursion as an unmitigated menace to smaller vehicles and, with fuel economy unlikely to top 18 mpg, a serious spewer of carbon dioxide--the so-called greenhouse gas--despite the Excursion's Low-Emission Vehicle status.

To be sure, there's no denying the Excursion's dimensions. At 226.7 inches by 80.0 inches by 77.4 inches (including roof rack), it's 7.2 inches longer, 3.3 inches wider, and between 5.4 and 5.8 inches taller than the current General Motors Suburban. It's also heavier, with curb weights crowding the four-ton frontier.

But let's acquire a little perspective here. The Excursion is one big bopper, for sure, but the Suburban is no wraith, and it's had the full-size-sport-utility market cornered for about 65 years. Although Ford did grab a chunk of the full-size-SUV business with the Expedition and the Lincoln Navigator, Suburban sales continued to soar, topping 150,000 last year. Ford execs couldn't see any reason to allow GM to define and dominate a steadily expanding segment.

"This has been essentially a one-vehicle segment for a long time," says Ford Division president Jim O'Connor. "That's simply unheard of in this business."

Ford's entry into the mastodon market is driven by a couple of compelling motives. First, the Expedition/Navigator program, which succeeded beyond Ford's wildest dreams, proves that the market for king-size sport-utilities still has a considerable potential for growth. People want the big utes for heavy-duty chores, such as towing, that the smaller ones can't handle, or can't handle as well. The Expedition's upper towing limit, for example, is 8300 pounds; a suitably equipped Excursion can drag a trailer weighing up to 10,000. The same goes for the Suburban.

Second, there's money to be made on big expensive SUVs based on large-volume pickups. Financial analysts calculate that every Navigator nets almost $15,000 for FoMoCo. It's not unreasonable to assume that each Excursion will contribute almost as much cash to the corporate bottom line. You don't make that kind of money on Escorts, folks. Or on Explorers.

There are a couple other ironies relative to the initial Excursion backlash. Although it's heftier, the Excursion's dimensions are about the same as those of the largest Ford Econoline van, a vehicle type that has thus far failed to provoke righteous indignation among the self-appointed environmental ombudsmen. For that matter, there are Ford full-size pickups that are a root and a half longer than the Excursion. Where were these people when the civilian edition of the AM General Hummer came along? Of course, the Sierra Club doesn't go after companies that sell only a handful of $70,000-to-$85,000 vehicles.

Speaking of safety, one of the major concerns of the anti-ute hysteria is what happens when a giant SUV, with its high ground clearance, smites an ordinary passenger car. We think Ford has a pretty good answer in the Excursion's patented BlockerBeam system, a tubular steel fixture mounted below and behind the front bumper. If or when hard contact occurs, the beam is designed to prevent the Excursion from riding up and over a smaller vehicle. In the rear, a modified Class IV trailer hitch serves the same function.

The Excursion can ingest up to 165 cubic feet of car go with its center seats folded forward and its rearmost seat removed. Thanks to a pair of rollers, one person can manage the removal task, although it entails crawling inside to lift the base free of the latches. There's room for those ubiquitous four-by-eight-foot sheets of building material on the almost-flat floor, despite the inside spare-tire stowage (which helped to make space for the 44-gallon fuel tank).

The 2023 Ford Expedition Timberline off-roading

The Ford Expedition Is More Reliable Than You Think

When it comes to reliability, you may think about Toyota vehicles, But don’t let the Ford Expedition slip by. Like the Sequioa and other three-row beasts, the Ford Expedition is incredibly likely to surpass 200,000 miles. It’s a reliable family option for work and play.

How reliable is the Ford Expedition?

The 2023 Ford Expedition driving on the highway

The Ford Expedition is one of the most reliable SUVs you can buy. Based on the iSeeCars list of the top 15 vehicles most likely to surpass 200,000 miles, the Expedition ranks in sixth place. The Expedition is keeping up with big players such as the Toyota 4Runner and even ranks ahead of the Chevy Tahoe .

While the Tahoe has a 4.4% chance of lasting longer than 200,000 miles, the Expedition has a 4.5 percent chance. The 4Runner has a 4.6 percent chance of making it, and the Toyota Land Cruiser is in first place with a massive 18.2 percent chance.

This list is primarily dominated by Toyota models, but a few surprising models were ranked. The Toyota Sienna, GMC Yukon, and Honda Odyssey are unexpected options.

iSeeCars analyzed over 14.9 million vehicles sold in 2021 to discover the most dependable models based on their long-term reliability, with the highest percentage of vehicles reaching 200,000 miles.

According to J.D.Power, the Expedition has an average reliability rating of 74 out of 100. Scores between 70 and 80 are average, while scores between 81 and 90 are above average. The Sequoia earned a score of 75, so it’s only one point ahead.

How many miles will an Expedition last?

Ford Expedition models can make it to 300,000 miles with the proper care and maintenance. Without being taken care of regularly, some Expedition models may face significant issues around 150,000 miles.

An Expedition is considered to be a high-milage model, around 200,000 miles. It’s a long-lasting, durable option for family road trips, towing, and outdoor adventuring.

The average person drives between 13,000 to 15,000 miles per year. Vehicles that are driven for work typically acquire about 20,000 miles per year. So, the Expedition could provide between 15 to 20 years of use.

However, the Expedition has an annual maintenance cost of about $861. This is a little up compared to the average cost of about $650 to maintain an SUV on a yearly basis. Repair and maintenance costs may vary based on age, condition, location, and shop.

Typical Expedition repairs include recharging the AC, replacing the air filter, replacing the radiator fan clutch, testing the emission system, replacing the window regulator, and replacing the turbocharger oil line.

Are new Expedition models reliable?

A blue Ford Expedition is parked.

According to J.D.Power, the 2023 Ford Expedition has an average reliability rating of 74 out of 100. Scores between 70 and 80 are average, while scores between 81 and 90 are above average. The Sequoia earned a score of 75, so it’s only one point ahead.

The score is based on issues that drivers reported in previous model years. J.D.Power sends surveys to thousands of owners allowing them to report on everything from the headlights to the paint, engine, transmission, tech, and more.

It looks like the most problems have been reported on the 2015, 2016, and 2018 models. The 2019 and 2020 Expedition models have fewer issues listed. A new generation of the Expedition was introduced in 2018, and it seems like the kinks were worked out by 2019.

We wouldn’t let that stop you from purchasing a used 2018 Ford Expedition. Just be sure to review the vehicle’s history before making your purchase. The Expedition is a durable option that should last for years.

Best running truck I have ever owned

Love this truck, rides really smooth, is super reliable, trouble free, and has a fantastic towing capacity rating. I have owned this truck for 5 yeas and never had a single problem with it, has about 171k miles on it now and it just keeps going.

Bad to the bone, this truck will outlast you .

Truck excided my expectations , my first was a v8 this one is a 6.0 desiel . Power speed comfort and dependability. I think I'll let them bury me in it. Lol

I live my truck

This is the best vehicle we have ever owned. I would keep it but my 6 kids are grown up now and we don’t need this big vehicle. So sad!!

This truck met all my needs but the wife said it was to big for her to drive so I had to take a pass on it but overall nice truck for someone special

  • Reliability —

Excellent Workhorse

I used this vehicle to tow a trailer and routinely had 8 people seated comfortably. It's too bad Ford stopped making them. Never had any significant problems with the 6.0 diesel.

Hands down the best family vehicle I?ve ever had

Despite what everyone says about fuel mileage, we love our Excursion. The talking heads would have you believe that the V10 only gets 12-13 mpg highway but ours averages 16-18.5. When you consider that it weighs just shy of 6000 lbs without people and gear, that?s pretty impressive. The other myth I?d like to dispel is the size. The Excursion is the same size as a standard cab long bed pickup! If you don?t believe me, if you remove the 3rd row seat and lay the second row down, you have the equivalent of an 8? pickup bed. The v10 doesn?t leak and will absolutely pull anything and the entirety of the Excursion is comfortable and durable, an absolutely fantastic family hauler in every way. Ford should have kept making them.

Turbo deisel MONSTER

This is the best suv ever made. I can tow anything i hook to it and ride in extreme conmfort on long trips. I did the x/c sping swap and it sits level and rides like a truck should. The 6.0 has been bullet proofed and with a programmer will flat fry the tires. Very fast for a 8500 pound vehicle.

Great vehicle has a lot of power .

This vehicle met my needs . Interior holds together very well . I have an 2003 model and it's better than any other 2003 vehicle I have ever seen. The 6.0 diesel motor when tuned right is one of the baddest diesels out there . Needles to say I haven't been beat when racing in it .

  • Comfort 4.0

Very reliable

This is by far the best heavy duty SUV ever made. The 7.3 diesel engine has plenty of power to pull anything, and still gets 15-18 MPG. The interior is spacious, plenty of room for all seven kids and all of their luggage. Perfect for traveling with family.

10 Best Ford Models With High Reliability Ratings

Ford has a knack for building some of the most reliable cars on the planet, and while it did suffer a slight hiccup with a few models towards the end of the 2010s, the dependability rating across most of its line-up has returned to form ahead of the electrified revamp the Blue Oval is looking ahead to.

As one of the most multifaceted manufacturers in the world, Ford offers a number of model types, ranging from sports cars and hot hatches, to SUVs of various sizes and workhorse vans that can ferry you for moon-mile amounts from state to state. So, as you can imagine, the main reason that such a huge manufacturer has done well is because the majority of its cars keep headaches and breakdowns to a minimum.

As a result, Ford is almost always on the receiving end of awards and media praise. To commemorate its achievements in 2022, we decided to put together a list of the 10 most reliable models Ford currently makes or has made over the last few years. Some of the inclusions may just surprise you – here’s what we found:

2023 Ford Explorer (3.7 Reliability Rating)

The updated Explorer does have its fair share of critics, but you can’t deny the sheer number of trim and accessory choices available and the brute force on offer. Prices start at around $37,000, which represents good value, and a 3.7 reliability for the 2023 Ford Explorer is a marked improvement over earlier models.

Between 2020 and 2022, Ford had to recall a number of Explorers due to defective driveshafts, which caused them to roll away. This was down to a failure with the rear axle mounting bolts, which eventually broke and caused the driveshafts to act up. Thankfully, the latest versions don’t suffer from quite as many issues. We also recommend checking out why we think the new Ford Explorer EV could be the Blue Oval’s biggest gamble yet .

2018 Ford Focus (3.7 Reliability Rating)

Ah, the Focus: one of the world’s most common, and arguably underrated vehicles ever. Chris Harris once famously stated that if he could only ever own one car, it would be a first-gen Focus. The reason for this was its chassis, and if we’re being honest, the standard Focus model has only really regressed since the first-gen.

It’s not that the second and third generations are bad, they just aren’t as revolutionary as the original. For proof that they are still very dependable machines, Kelley Blue Book has given the 2018 Ford Focus hatchback a reliability rating of 3.7, which is overshadowed by the 2019 Volkswagen Golf’s score of 4.4. However, take a look back at the evolution of the Focus RS to be reminded of just why we love Ford’s workhorse so much.

2019 Ford Fiesta (4.0 Reliability Rating)

Ford discontinuing the Fiesta after 47 years and seven generations makes us a tad more than teary-eyed. This supermini has taken the world by storm over the course of its career, and given just how many examples were sold, you can bet that it will continue to dominate the streets of cities for years to come. In fact, the Ford Fiesta ST will always remain one of our favorite superminis .

The recipe for success with the Fiesta was simple: give it a small but strong engine, fill it with all the basic amenities a driver would need across a variety of distances, and make sure any potential problems could be fixed on copper coins. Ford got it right ever since the first generation, and by the time the 2019 Ford Fiesta came about, the badge was teetering on a near-immortal reputation.

2023 Ford Escape (4.3 Reliability Rating)

Known to Europeans as the Kuga, the Ford Escape is the first real small-sized SUV that made a mark in the segment for Ford. Now in its fourth generation, the Escape seems to be going from strength to strength, and with the introduction of a plug-in hybrid version, it seems as though Ford has no plans to ditch the Escape from its lineup anytime soon.

With a reliability rating of 4.3 from Kelley Blue Brook, the 2023 Ford Escape is also the Ford model which really starts to knock on the higher echelons of dependability among the Blue Oval range. We’d also recommend giving a read over how the 2023 Ford Escape grew up to rival the Honda CR-V , just to help you understand how much the Escape moniker has evolved over the last few years.

2023 Ford Transit Connect (4.3 Reliability Rating)

The only van on this list, but what a van it is. The Transit, like many of Ford’s vehicles, has really spread its wings over the last few years, offering both smaller and bigger versions of the critically acclaimed cargo van that was originally marketed, and even coming with electrified powertrains.

This multitude of adaptations is why we believe the Ford Transit Connect beats all the other passenger wagons , and a reliability rating of 4.3 from Kelley Blue Book for the 2023 Ford Transit Connect Cargo Van just adds another spring in its step.

Related: Everyone Regrets Buying These 10 Used Ford SUVs

2023 Ford Ranger (4.4 Reliability Rating)

Pickup trucks are growing in prominence worldwide, but in North America, they’ve been a popular fixture in society for decades. With the rebirth of the Ranger – which acts as the smaller option to the mighty F-150 – Ford has added another vertical to its impressive line-up, and given customers yet another credible option in the mid-size pickup category. For thrill-seekers, the 2023 Ford Ranger Raptor’s acceleration will even leave you in awe .

Ironically, the 2019 model year examples have a terrible reliability record, with Consumer Reports giving it a 1 out of 5 score. That pales in comparison to how well the newer versions are doing, with the 2023 Ford Ranger SuperCab receiving a 4.4 out of 5.0 reliability score from Kelley Blue Book.

Ford Edge (4.5 Reliability Rating)

The 2023 Ford Edge is hardly the cheapest Ford model around, but it still represents a very affordable option in its respective segment. That’s why it received a 4.4 consumer rating overall, which is aided massively by its 4.5 reliability score. There are such few components that tend to go wrong with the Edge, so the year on maintenance costs are also relatively low.

The $39,000 or so you pay for one doesn’t seem so high now, and the deal feels even sweeter when you consider the five-star crash test rating result the Edge managed to secure. The variety of systems and technology on offer combine to make even the entry-level Edge models a brilliant option in the mid-size SUV space. That’s what makes us particularly sad about the fact that there won’t be a next-generation 2024 Ford Edge SUV for America .

2023 Ford F-150 (4.5 Reliability Rating)

Perhaps the most famous and popular pickup truck in the world – something that is supported by the sheer sales volume figures it racks up every year. The 2023 Ford F150 Regular Cab is one of the cheapest variants of the multiple award-winning truck, but that doesn’t mean Ford hasn’t forked out on making sure it remains tough and sturdy.

A 4.5 reliability rating makes the F-150 one of the best in its class, and only means the current generation is well-placed to continue to push this legendary lineage to new heights. It also has one of the most reliable Ford engines ever fitted to an F-150 , so if ever there was a vehicle that was certain to get you back home in almost any condition, and under any circumstances, this is it.

2020 Ford Fusion (4.5 Reliability Rating)

Also known to Europeans as the Mondeo, the Fusion is a model that has, like so many of its siblings, grown a stellar reputation for a number of reasons. Not only is it great with fuel economy and attainable without breaking the bank, but a five-star safety rating means the Fusion really is a car that does it all.

Ford is also bringing the moniker back, so do be sure to check out what we expect from the upcoming Fusion . We hope that Ford manages to maintain, or surpass, the 4.7 reliability score that the 2020 Ford Fusion boasted – just one of its many endearing quality traits.

Related: 10 Vintage Ford Cars to Avoid At All Costs

2023 Ford Mustang (4.7 Reliability Rating)

How’s this for a surprise? The most outrageous sports car that Ford makes is also the most reliable. That’s according to Kelley Blue Book, which has given the 2023 Ford Mustang an astonishing score of 4.7.

But it’s worth remembering that this reliability record will likely plummet the moment that aftermarket work is applied to it, which is often the case with sports cars of this caliber. Just meet Lucifer: the 1,300 hp twin-turbo Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 . We’re pretty sure it eats kittens and puppies for breakfast, hence why that particular Mustang probably doesn’t have a 4.7 reliability rating. Oh well, compromise is a word that gearheads know all too well.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
