Pennsylvania is known for its history, heritage, and delicious food. It also has some very unique places to visit and experience. I bet you will find them fascinating. Let’s take a trip across the state and look at some of these interesting destinations that draw tourists to Pennsylvania.

Note: My visit to Penn’s Cave and Wildlife Park was hosted by the site, and AAA Buggy Rides sponsored my Amish Buggy Ride. However, all opinions expressed are my own.

1. Kinzua Bridge Skywalk

Mount jewett.

The Kinzua Bridge was the largest (2,053 feet long) and tallest (301 feet high) bridge in the world upon its completion in 1882 and known by many as the eighth wonder of the world. Trains used this viaduct to cross the 300-foot valley below. In 2003, a tornado whipped through the valley and destroyed 60 percent of the bridge, leaving it a mangled mess.

Today, at Kinzua Bridge State Park , visitors can walk on the 300-foot restored portion of the bridge to an observation deck, providing picturesque views of the Kinzua Creek Valley and the wreckage left from the tornado below. Visitors are permitted to hike down to the remains of the bridge, which are still lying where they fell.

The bridge and Skywalk are mostly flat with solid surfaces. There is also another hiking trail along the railroad bed that is flat and easy walking. The hike down to the wreckage is a challenging hike requiring balance and sturdy shoes.

Plan to spend an hour or so if just visiting the Skywalk. If you plan to hike the trails, schedule at least half a day at this site.

The Drake Oil Well in Pennsylvania.

Robin O’Neal Smith

2. Drake Oil Well

Pennsylvania is known for many things, but I bet you didn’t know it had the world’s first commercial oil well. Pennsylvania is home to the birthplace of the oil industry. Called the Valley that Changed the World, Oil Creek State Park and the site of that first commercial oil well located in Titusville.

In 1859, the first purposely drilled well hunting for oil was dug. Just south of this is McClintock Well 1 , a well dug in 1861 that struck oil at 600+ feet below the surface. It produced 175 barrels of oil per day.

What makes Drake Oil Well so unique is that it was the first and continues to produce oil, making it the world’s oldest continually producing oil well.

The well is run regularly throughout the year. The oil produced is sold to help with the costs of preserving the site.

The park is mostly flat and easily walked. Parking is close. There are remnants of the first wells and drilling equipment to view around the park.

An hour or two at this park is enough to see everything.

Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pennsylvania.

Sean Pavone / Shutterstock

3. Fallingwater

This site is unique in how the iconic home of Frank Lloyd Wright sits over a Pennsylvania waterfall.

Fallingwater is one of 24 Unesco World Heritage sites in the United States. There are only two in Pennsylvania.

It is one of those places you have to see at least once in your lifetime. I’ve been fortunate to get to visit it multiple times.

Located in the Laurel Highlands of Southwestern, Pennsylvania, just 70 miles east of Pittsburgh, it was designed in 1935 as a residence and summer home.

It is open as a museum that includes a gift shop and a cafe.

Self-guided and guided tours are available, and reservations are required. Tickets for both are available online. Most of the walking is on flat surfaces unless you choose to hike in the 5,100 acres surrounding Fallingwater.

I would allow a minimum of two hours for this visit.

The observation tower on Mount Davis.

4. Mount Davis

This treasure is about an hour from my home, and I had never visited until recently. You can stand at the highest point in the state of Pennsylvania when you visit Mount Davis .

It is a beautiful nature park with numerous hiking trails. It holds the record for being the highest point in Pennsylvania, and there are also historical markers and stories about the area.

You can climb an observation tower, which is several stories high with lots of steps, but the view is worth the climb as you look out over the area.

Most of the hiking is flat, but it is not paved.

Allow an hour for this visit and longer if you plan to take some of the hiking trails.

Pro Tip: Be aware it is cooler and windy there. You might need a light jacket. I was there in summer, and it was about 15 degrees cooler there than our previous stop and there was a brisk wind.

5. Horseshoe Curve

If you are a railroad fan or an engineering junkie, you will adore Horseshoe Curve . It is a dramatic horseshoe-shaped railroad curve, one of the world’s most incredible engineering feats, situated at the top of a steep hill near Altoona in the Allegheny Mountains. The best views are from atop the mountain. Pennsylvania Railroad workers overcame the challenge of crossing the mountain by installing rail tracks through this rough terrain.

There are many steps, 194 to be exact, that lead up to the top, or you can ride the funicular (incline is closed during COVID) for a view of this engineering wonder.

This is a nice place to relax and watch the trains go by and enjoy a picnic lunch.

Plan to spend an hour or so here. If you are a train lover, you might want to spend the whole afternoon.

The starting point for Gravity Hill.

6. Gravity Hill

I recently visited this phenomenon that is about 45 minutes from my home. I had often heard of Gravity Hill but never actually experienced it till July 2020.

The theory of this experience is that gravity will make your car move uphill. There is a spray-painted marker on the road that indicates where to start. When you put your car in neutral, your car will start going uphill by gravity. I didn’t think this could possibly happen, but I have tried it, and it works. I have even turned the car around and tried it in the opposite direction, and it still worked.

About a mile down the road, there is another spot where it happens. There are poles along the road, and if you find the one that has the number 69 on it and put your car in neutral gear, you will experience your vehicle moving uphill on its own.

Both of these experiences are quite a thrill when trying to steer as gravity moves your car uphill backward.

Gravity Hill in Bedford County is relatively easy to find if you know where you are going, but it is out in the country on a back road. The directions are on the Bedford County Visitors Bureau Gravity Hill page .

Allow about an hour for this experience, including travel time to the site. Experience it, turn around, do it again, and then get back to the main road.

Pro Tip: Don’t try this in an RV or if hauling a trailer. There is not sufficient room to turn around after the experience. Make sure there isn’t traffic coming either way before trying this.

The Koontz Coffee Pot in Bedford, Pennsylvania.

Brad Crisswell

7. Coffee Pot

Located along the historic Lincoln Highway just west of Bedford, the Koontz Coffee Pot still stands. Built in 1927 by David Koontz as a lunch spot, this 18- by 22-foot coffee pot now resides near the Bedford County Fairgrounds.

Over the years, the Coffee Pot never served as a coffee shop. That said, visitors can walk around this unique site, and it is a great photo opportunity.

The Coffee Pot address is 108 Telegraph Rd, Bedford, PA 15522. This is a quick half-hour stop.

The Abandoned Turnpike Tunnel in Pennsylvania.

Neal Michael Smith

8. Abandoned Turnpike Tunnel

As you travel along the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Breezewood, just a few hundred yards to the side is one of the most unique attractions, the Abandoned PA Turnpike Tunnel .

When the PA Turnpike was built, it was a four-lane highway but only had single-lane tunnels, which created a backup. In 1968 traffic was rerouted to go over the mountains, leaving this area abandoned.

The 13-mile stretch of turnpike was given to the Southern Alleghenies Conservancy. The goal was to turn the abandoned turnpike into an official biking and walking trail. But that has never happened.

The site is officially closed to visitors, but the signs indicate you are permitted to be on the property at your own risk. You can walk or bike the abandoned turnpike and go through the two-mile-long tunnels and explore this strange site.

It can be accessed near Breezewood and in Fulton County. It is mostly flat pavement, but you will find broken pavement in places. I suggest sturdy sneakers for this site.

Depending on how far you wish to walk and how fast you walk, plan to spend one to four hours at this site.

Pro Tip: Be sure to take a flashlight with you, it is very dark.

Balance Rock in Trough Creek State Park.

9. Balance Rock

Trough creek state park.

This unique location is part of the Trough Creek State Park near Raystown Lake. You can spend a whole weekend at Raystown Lake . The Balanced Rock is a precariously perched boulder on the edge of a steep cliff. A geological wonder, you keep thinking it will fall over the cliff any second.

The trail to Balanced Rock is a short, steep hiking trail rated difficult. If you wear suitable footwear you should not have a problem. I’ve hiked it many times with older individuals and had no issues.

Allow two hours for this visit, longer if you plan to do additional hiking.

Old washing machines from the Isett Heritage Museum.

10. Isett Heritage Museum

Stepping back in time is easy when you visit the Isett Heritage Museum . A unique museum, they have selected over 40,000 items to display. They date back to the 1800s up to the present. Everything from toys to machines, cars, hardware, and so much more.

They have things that I remembered from my childhood visiting my grandparents’ farm (old milk cans and ringer washer machines, and items I enjoyed from my teen years (jukeboxes and typewriters.) It was a happy experience to reminisce about many of the things there.

There is considerable walking involved in multiple buildings, but it is an easy walk, and on flat cement-type surfaces and is wheelchair accessible.

Allow at least two to three hours for this visit.

The entrance to Penn's Cave in Pennsylvania.

11. Penn’s Cave And Wildlife Park

Centre hall.

This cavern is perfect for the 50+ traveler. Penn’s Cave is the only all-water cavern in Pennsylvania. It is located in Centre Hall and is one of nine show caves in the state. You go through the cave in a boat, so no worrying about sliding on the rocks and falling. But you do have a steep incline and some steps to get down to the boat dock.

Boats take visitors through Penn’s Cave, which runs underneath a working farm. The ride through the cavern is about a quarter-mile in length and lasts about 45 to 50 minutes.

A tour guide sitting at the front of the boat guides it through the cavern stopping along the way to point out cleverly named magnificent rock formations and provides a bit of fascinating history about the cave and the geology of the area.

If this unique boat-based tour of Penn’s Cave isn’t enough to make you want to visit, there is also a wildlife park and maze.

The wildlife park tour takes place via bus with minimal walking at one stop. The animals are housed in huge natural habitat enclosures. Many of the animals graze near the bus. Dangerous animals, like the wolves, are housed in giant enclosures that keep them separate from visitors but allow for exceptional viewing.

The 5,000-square-foot maze at Penn’s Cave sits directly behind the gift shop and was one of my favorite parts of my visit. This maze is as much fun for adults as it is for kids, and the paneled walls allow them to change the maze from time to time. This involves walking on flat level cement and up some steps.

This is definitely unique and worth a half-day visit.

Pro Tip: Take a light jacket. It is chilly when going through the cavern.

An Amish Buggy Ride in Pennsylvania.

12. Amish Buggy Ride

The Amish have settlements in few states, and Pennsylvania is one of them. An Amish Buggy ride is a unique experience and an opportunity to learn about the Amish lifestyle and history.

I recently experienced this unique activity and highly recommend it to everyone.

There are a variety of tours offered in Lancaster by different vendors.

Our tour was with AAA Buggy Rides , and they have knowledgeable guides that are either Amish or have family in the Amish community. They also take excellent care of their horses who pull the buggies. Their tours start at convenient locations and last anywhere from 35 to 90 minutes.

There is one significant step into the buggy. Other than that, you are sitting and enjoying the ride.

13. Eastern State Penitentiary

Philadelphia.

The Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia opened in 1829 and was considered state-of-the-art and a model for future correctional facilities. It was operational until 1970 when it was replaced with a newer, modern prison.

For nearly two decades, it was abandoned and then opened again in 1988 for limited tours. Sitting in the middle of the city, it appears almost like a massive, haunted castle. The prison has been preserved and is a fascinating place to visit.

I recommend taking the self-guided tour that includes headphones and provides the story of the prison. This tour allows you to move at your own pace and spend extra time in the areas of most interest. You can even see where Al Capone’s cell was.

In the fall of 2020, they will begin offering night tours that allow you to explore the prison cell blocks and yards with moonlight shining through the overhead skylights. There will also be large-screen projections on the walls of the penitentiary.

Most of the walking is on flat cement surfaces. The basic tour route includes ADA compliant ramps, but some areas are not accessible.

They have recently made some upgrades, and their hours are changing due to COVID, so check the website before visiting.

Tickets are available online for purchase. Plan to spend several hours if you intend to do the entire tour.

14. Mutter Museum

Do you like odd and strange things? If so, the Mutter Museum might be something you will enjoy. It is definitely unique. The entire museum is made up of a variety of medical tools and pathological and anatomical preserved specimens.

Most people find it either fascinating and educational or extremely gross. My husband and I enjoyed the visit. Certainly not something you would consider dull or ordinary.

The area is flat and easy to walk. I would plan to spend several hours at this unique museum.

Ringing Rocks Park in Pennsylvania.

Jim Bogosian / Shutterstock

15. Ringing Rocks Park

Bucks county.

Ringing Rocks Park is the place to go if you want to take out your frustrations!

Bring your hammer and an hour or two, and you can have a great time banging the rocks to make a ringing sound on seven acres of land. Ringing Rocks County Park in Bucks County is located on an isolated hillside overlooking the Delaware River.

No one knows why the rocks ring in this area. They make a metallic sound when the hammer hits the rock.

The trail to the Boulder Field is flat, and you only walk a few hundred yards on the trail. The rocks in the field are plentiful, and you need to be surefooted and have a good sense of balance if you plan to explore the area.

When you are on the trail to the field, you come to a fork in the road. Take the fork to the right, and you will also see an added treat, a waterfall, High Falls. (These falls are sometimes dry in summer and fall if there hasn’t been much rain.)

Located in northern Bucks County, the park’s entrance has a small sign next to the parking lot entrance. It is easy to miss, and it’s not always identifiable on phone maps. The park has no formal address but can be located using GPS coordinates 40.559916, -75.128538.

Aside from the seven acres of ringing rocks, there are some picnic tables and a sign marking the trail entrance. The park is open from sunrise to sunset. Admission to the park is free. I would plan to spend at least an hour at this park.

Tip: Don’t forget your hammer.

There you have it,15 unique, one-of-a-kind places to visit in Pennsylvania. Each provides a different experience for you to enjoy. Once you have experienced these great options, here are 15 more unique places in Pennsylvania perfect for mature travelers .

Senior Trips

Senior trips, creating the final memory that lasts.

Moving on from high school is a major life milestone, and students are always hoping to cap it off with a bang. Leaving behind the last four years of your life can be tough, for students and teachers alike. With new paths, new futures, and new destinations in store for everyone involved, it only makes sense to send your students off with a proper farewell.

Try to remember your favorite memories from your high school and university days. What made those memories better than most? What made them special, unforgettable, and unique?

Give your students a memory that will last a lifetime with a  senior trip they’ll never forget . With proper planning and execution, you can turn any  senior trip  into one your students will be talking about forever.

Becoming More Than Just Students

Seniors will be looking to spend every last moment of their high school life taking it all in. Even the most cynical of the bunch will see that this chapter of their life is over, and use their remaining time as an opportunity to make the most of their friendships. But these friendships need to grow beyond their student lives.

We plan our senior trips   with that in mind—cementing the bonds between students and peers. We give your community the environment to truly let loose and see each other in a different light: not just as students, but as buddies, colleagues, and friends.

Something Different for Everyone

A senior trip has to be more than just a trip to the beach or a party before graduation. There needs to be the elements that transform it from just a regular day out of school to an event that your peers will never forget.

At Peak Performance, we make sure to find that right formula that gets the most out of your students and peers. We assess your needs and craft the perfect grad trip that will suit your community in the best way possible. We will add those extra little touches that will truly make this an experience worth having.

The Benefits of Senior Trips

Capping off high school the right way is vital towards making sure your students have the best possible leap to the next chapter of their lives. Remember: your students are young and impressionable, and sending them off the right way and making sure they remember high school with positive memories is your final responsibility. Students who struggle with leaving high school might deal with some of the following issues:

  • Uncertainty of their future
  • Unwillingness to move forward and make the next step
  • Bitterness or resentment due to problems with peers
  • Lack of desire to move into a new community
  • Lack of strong adult role models in academic positions

How to Plan an Awesome Senior Trip

Need some help figuring out your next senior trip here’s a short guide for your convenience., pick your place (and have a back up).

First comes the location. You might already have a general idea of what you want to experience or where you want to go, but if not, no problem. Have a vote amongst your students—get their input on what trip destinations they want to see, where they want to go, and what they want to do. While the most popular choice might not always be the best one, it’s important that your seniors know that their input is important to you. After all, this is their trip!

Picking a place also means considering the size of your group, the budget, and how much time you actually have. And even if you think you’ve thought of the perfect  senior trips destination , always make sure to have a Plan B in your back pocket.

Set Your Details

You know your place, now you need to think about what you need to do to make this happen. This includes :

  • Date of travel
  • Transportation method
  • Number of participants

Your dates and your transportation methods need to be decided, pronto. Will you be taking a plane? A bus? A train? Are your travel dates good for your location, or will you end up swamped in a series of tourist traps? Do you know how many people will be going on the trip, and what exactly you will be doing to make sure everyone has the best time of their lives? Plan, but don’t over-plan. You want to strike that perfect balance between well planned and organic.

It’s our job to make sure that every piece fits perfectly—from your budget to the desired activities to the location itself.

If something is off, we can do everything from slight tweaks to entire overhauls of your planned trip. Either way, our goal will be the same as yours: to get the best possible student travel for your kids.

Need some help figuring out your next senior trip? Here’s a short guide for your convenience.

Destination.

When it’s time to plan your senior class trip, consider a destination or two that you’d like to consider. Do you want to visit a city with a lot of history? Do you want to plan a trip with several outdoor excursions and activities? Of course, budget will be a determining factor, but narrowing your ideas to one or two locations will help in the planning process.

Whether your budget is conservative or generous, travel is possible either way. Think about money that will come from different sources. Will each student pay their own way? Do you have several fundraisers planned? Do you have corporate sponsors that are willing to make a donation to your trip? It’s good to have a game plan for the “who’s” and “where’s” when it comes to budget.

Dates of Travel

Make sure you know what travel dates are approved by your school administration. You’ll want to have a clear idea of when you can travel prior to planning the trip. If you can have an alternate date approved as well, that is ideal. Sometimes popular destinations fill up fast for hotels and activities. And if you have pre-approval from your administration for the dates of travel, when it comes time for final approval, that’s one less hurdle for you

Typically when students learn that a trip is happening, there’s a lot of interest right off the bat. That enthusiasm can wane so it’s important for you to “sell” the trip to your students. They will match your level of excitement and of course you want as many students to experience the trip as possible. Emails to parents, posters in your school, shared information in apps like Remind all help to keep the enrollment in your trip robust. You want to fill those buses to maximize your trip budget.

Once you have sketched out your destination, your group size, the dates of travel, and your budget, contact Peak. We will go over all the goals of your trip and partner with you to build the itinerary to fit your needs and create an experience for your students that they won’t soon forget.

Introduction

Welcome to the ultimate guide on how to plan a senior class trip! As the school year comes to a close, many seniors look forward to a memorable trip to celebrate their achievements and create lasting memories before embarking on their next journey. Planning a senior class trip can be a thrilling and rewarding experience, but it does require careful attention to detail and thorough organization.

In this guide, we will take you through a step-by-step process to help you plan a successful and unforgettable senior class trip. From choosing the destination to coordinating transportation and accommodations, we will cover everything you need to know to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for both students and faculty.

Planning a senior class trip is not just about booking flights and hotels; it is about creating an experience that reflects the interests and preferences of the graduating class. It is an opportunity to explore new destinations, bond with classmates, and celebrate the end of a significant chapter in their lives.

Whether you are a teacher, a parent, or a student involved in planning the trip, this guide will provide you with valuable insights and practical tips to make the process more manageable and enjoyable. So, let’s dive in and start planning an extraordinary senior class trip that will be remembered for years to come!

Step 1: Choosing the Destination

Choosing the right destination is the first and most crucial step in planning a senior class trip. The destination sets the tone for the entire experience and plays a significant role in determining the level of excitement and engagement among the students. When selecting a destination, consider the following factors:

  • Interests and Preferences: Take into account the interests and preferences of the senior class. Do they prefer a beach getaway, a city adventure, or an educational tour? Get feedback from the students through surveys or group discussions to ensure that the chosen destination aligns with their desires.
  • Budget: Determine the budget available for the trip and search for destinations that fit within that range. Consider not only the cost of transportation and accommodation but also the cost of activities, meals, and any additional expenses that may arise.
  • Accessibility: Consider how easily accessible the destination is for both travel and exploration. Look for destinations with convenient transportation options and a range of attractions and activities to keep the students entertained.
  • Weather: Research the climate and weather conditions of potential destinations. Ensure that the weather during the planned trip dates is favorable and suitable for the desired activities.
  • Safety and Security: Prioritize the safety and security of the students. Research the destination’s safety record and take into account any travel advisories or warnings. Choose a destination that is known for its safety measures and has a positive reputation among travelers.

Once you have considered these factors, create a shortlist of potential destinations that meet the criteria. Present the options to the students and allow them to vote for their preferred choice. Taking their input into account will increase their engagement and excitement throughout the planning process.

Remember, the destination should not only offer exciting activities and attractions but also provide a unique and enriching experience for the students. Consider destinations that provide a mix of adventure, culture, and education, allowing the senior class to broaden their horizons and create lifelong memories.

Step 2: Establishing the Budget

Establishing a budget is a crucial step in planning a senior class trip. It helps determine the financial feasibility of the trip and ensures that all expenses are accounted for. Here’s how to establish a budget for your senior class trip:

  • Gather Information: Start by gathering information about the potential costs of transportation, accommodation, activities, meals, and any other expenses that may arise during the trip. Research the average prices for these items in the chosen destination or consult with travel agencies and tour operators.
  • Estimate the Number of Participants: Determine the number of students, teachers, and other participants who will be joining the trip. This information is crucial in estimating the overall cost, as it affects the number of hotel rooms, seats on transportation, and group discounts that can be negotiated.
  • Consider Fundraising: Explore opportunities for fundraising to supplement the budget. Organize bake sales, car washes, or other events to generate funds that can be used towards the trip. Involve students, parents, and the community in these fundraising activities to promote engagement and support.
  • Allocate Funds Wisely: Once you have an idea of the costs involved, allocate the available funds to different expense categories. Prioritize essential items such as transportation and accommodation and allocate funds accordingly. Leave some room in the budget for unforeseen expenses or emergencies.
  • Research Discounts and Deals: Look for discounts, group rates, or special deals that may apply to your trip. Contact hotels, airlines, and activity providers to inquire about group discounts or student rates. Research online platforms that offer deals and packages specifically designed for student groups or educational trips.
  • Track Expenses: Keep a record of all expenses and payments made throughout the planning process. This will help you stay on track with the budget and avoid overspending. Consider using budget-tracking tools or spreadsheets to keep everything organized.

It is essential to involve students, parents, and school administration in the budgeting process. Transparency and communication regarding the budget will help manage expectations and ensure everyone is on board with the financial aspects of the trip.

Remember, the budget should be realistic and achievable. Make adjustments as needed to ensure that the trip remains within financial reach while still providing an unforgettable experience for the senior class.

Step 3: Determining the Duration

Deciding on the duration of the senior class trip is an important consideration that will impact the overall experience. The duration should provide enough time to explore the destination, participate in activities, and allow for relaxation and downtime. Here are some factors to consider when determining the duration of the trip:

  • Destination: The location will play a significant role in determining the ideal duration. Some destinations may require more time to fully experience, while others may be suitable for a shorter visit. Take into account the travel time to and from the destination, as well as the number of activities and attractions available.
  • Budget: The budget allocated for the trip may influence the duration. Keep in mind that a longer trip will likely have higher costs for accommodation, meals, and activities. Consider the overall budget and determine how it can be divided to cover a suitable duration.
  • School Schedule: Coordinate with the school administration to select dates that align with the academic calendar. Avoid conflicts with important exams, school events, or other obligations that may prevent students from participating in the trip.
  • Student Preferences: Consult with the senior class to gather their input on the desired trip duration. Consider their availability, commitments outside of school, and any preferences they may have regarding the length of the trip.
  • Activities and Attractions: Evaluate the number of activities, sights, and attractions that the destination offers. If there are numerous must-see places and exciting activities, it may warrant a longer trip to ensure ample time to experience everything.
  • Travel Logistics: Assess the travel logistics and consider the time it takes to reach the destination. If the travel time is extensive, it may be beneficial to plan for a longer trip to allow for adequate rest and recovery upon arrival.

Once you have considered these factors, you can determine the ideal duration for the senior class trip. It could be a weekend getaway, a week-long adventure, or even an extended trip, depending on the destination and the preferences of the students and faculty.

Keep in mind that striking a balance between the length of the trip and the available budget is crucial. Aim to provide enough time for exploration and enjoyment while ensuring that the trip remains financially viable for all participants. Once the duration is determined, you can proceed with the planning process and move on to the next steps.

Step 4: Getting Approval from School Administration

Before diving into the detailed planning process, it is crucial to obtain approval from the school administration for the senior class trip. This step ensures that the trip aligns with the school’s policies, guidelines, and educational objectives. Here’s how to navigate the approval process:

  • Research School Policies: Familiarize yourself with the school’s policies regarding off-campus trips. Understand the requirements, procedures, and any specific guidelines that need to be followed for a trip to be approved. This may include obtaining permission forms, insurance coverage, or adhering to specific safety protocols.
  • Create a Proposal: Develop a comprehensive proposal that outlines the details of the trip. Include the destination, duration, proposed dates, estimated budget, itinerary, and educational value of the trip. Highlight the benefits of the trip in terms of personal growth, cultural enrichment, and building a sense of community among the senior class.
  • Present to the School Administration: Schedule a meeting with the relevant school authorities to present your proposal. Use this opportunity to explain the purpose, educational value, and logistics of the trip. Be prepared to address any concerns or questions that may arise and demonstrate how the trip aligns with the school’s mission and objectives.
  • Address Safety and Liability: Assure the school administration that safety and liability concerns have been considered and addressed. Provide information about insurance coverage, emergency procedures, and risk management strategies. Emphasize the measures taken to ensure the well-being and security of the students throughout the trip.
  • Involve Parents: Communicate with parents and keep them informed about the trip. Address any concerns or questions they may have and provide them with an opportunity to voice their opinions. Parental support and involvement can strengthen the case for obtaining approval from the school administration.
  • Obtain Required Permissions: If the school administration requires specific permissions or forms, ensure that they are completed and submitted promptly. This may include obtaining consent forms, medical information, and emergency contact details for each participating student.

Remember, obtaining approval from the school administration may take time, so it is important to start the process well in advance. Be prepared to make adjustments to your proposal based on the feedback received and work collaboratively with the school administration to address any concerns or requirements.

Once the trip is approved, you can move forward with confidence, knowing that the senior class trip has the support and backing of the school. This approval sets the foundation for a successful and memorable experience for all involved.

Step 5: Creating a Committee

Creating a committee to assist with the planning and organization of the senior class trip is essential for distributing responsibilities and ensuring a smooth and successful trip. By forming a committee, you can bring together individuals with different skills and strengths to collectively contribute to the planning process. Here’s how to create an effective committee:

  • Determine Roles and Responsibilities: Define the specific roles and responsibilities needed for the trip, such as transportation, accommodations, activities, finances, communications, and safety. Assign committee members to these roles based on their interests and expertise.
  • Recruit Volunteers: Reach out to the senior class, parents, and faculty members to recruit volunteers who are interested in being part of the committee. Encourage a diverse group of individuals to ensure different perspectives and ideas are represented.
  • Establish Regular Meeting Schedule: Plan regular meetings to keep everyone on the committee updated and involved in the planning process. Set an agenda for each meeting and encourage open and collaborative discussions. In situations where in-person meetings are not possible, utilize online meeting platforms.
  • Delegate Tasks: Assign specific tasks to committee members based on their roles and expertise. This includes conducting research, obtaining quotes, making reservations, coordinating logistics, and keeping track of finances. Clearly communicate deadlines and expectations to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Encourage Collaboration: Foster a collaborative environment within the committee. Encourage members to share ideas, suggestions, and feedback. Emphasize the importance of open communication to ensure everyone’s input is considered and valued.
  • Provide Support and Resources: Ensure that committee members have access to the necessary resources and information to fulfill their roles effectively. This may include providing budget guidelines, templates for tracking expenses, contact information of relevant vendors, and any other relevant documentation.
  • Regularly Update the Senior Class: Keep the senior class informed about the progress of the planning and involve them in key decision-making processes when appropriate. Gather their input and feedback to ensure that the trip aligns with their expectations and desires.

A well-organized committee can help alleviate the workload and ensure that all aspects of the senior class trip are adequately addressed. By distributing tasks and responsibilities, you can leverage the collective skills and experience of the committee members to create an unforgettable trip for the senior class.

Collaboration and effective communication within the committee are essential for the success of the planning process. Encourage transparency, flexibility, and a positive team dynamic to ensure a productive and enjoyable committee experience.

Step 6: Researching Transportation Options

Researching and selecting the right transportation options for your senior class trip is crucial to ensure a smooth and comfortable journey. Consider the following factors when exploring transportation options:

  • Group Size: Determine the number of participants to determine the appropriate mode of transportation. For larger groups, chartering a bus or renting a coach may be more cost-effective, while smaller groups may consider renting vans or cars.
  • Destination: Consider the distance to your destination and the available transportation options. Evaluate the pros and cons of flying, taking a train, or driving, depending on the convenience, cost, and time constraints involved.
  • Budget: Take your budget into account when researching transportation options. Obtain quotes from different transportation providers and compare prices to find the most affordable and cost-effective solution.
  • Flexibility: Assess the flexibility of your chosen transportation option. Will it allow for easy exploration of the destination? Are there restrictions on luggage, equipment, or other factors that may impact the trip?
  • Safety and Reliability: Prioritize the safety and reliability of the transportation method. Research the track record and reputation of transportation providers, and ensure they adhere to safety standards and regulations.
  • Convenience: Consider the convenience of the transportation option for both the departure and arrival. Evaluate factors such as proximity to the school, accessibility for students with specific needs, and ease of coordination and communication with the transportation provider.
  • Included Amenities: Find out if the transportation option includes any amenities that can enhance the students’ comfort and enjoyment. This may include Wi-Fi, charging outlets, onboard entertainment, or meals, depending on the mode of transportation.
  • Insurance Coverage: Check if your chosen transportation option provides adequate insurance coverage for the senior class trip. Ensure that students and faculty are protected in case of any unexpected events or accidents.

Once you have researched the transportation options, evaluate the information collected and compare the pros and cons of each. Take into consideration the distance, cost, convenience, and safety to make an informed decision that aligns with the needs and preferences of the senior class.

Remember to book the transportation well in advance to secure availability and potential discounts. Communicate the details to the committee, senior class, and any other relevant parties, and provide clear instructions regarding pick-up locations, departure times, and any other relevant information.

A well-planned and efficient transportation arrangement sets a positive tone for the entire trip, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey for all participants.

Step 7: Organizing Accommodations

Organizing suitable accommodations is a vital step in planning a senior class trip. Finding the right place to stay ensures comfort, security, and a pleasant experience for all participants. Here’s how to go about organizing accommodations for your trip:

  • Research Accommodation Options: Begin by researching different types of accommodations that are suitable for your destination and group size. This may include hotels, hostels, vacation rentals, or even camping sites. Consider factors such as location, amenities, and cost.
  • Group Discounts or Packages: Contact accommodation providers to inquire about group discounts or packages specifically designed for student trips. Many hotels and resorts offer discounted rates or additional benefits for larger groups, which can help you stay within your budget.
  • Proximity to Activities: Consider the proximity of the accommodations to the activities and attractions you have planned. Staying in a central location can save travel time and make it easier for the group to access various destinations without extensive commuting.
  • Safety and Security: Prioritize the safety and security of the accommodations. Research the reputation and safety measures of the potential options. Look for accommodations that have proper security features, such as secure entrances, surveillance cameras, and 24/7 staff availability.
  • Comfort and Amenities: Consider the comfort level and necessary amenities for a pleasant stay. Ensure that the accommodations provide comfortable beds, clean facilities, and any essential amenities such as Wi-Fi, laundry facilities, and recreational areas.
  • Accessibility: If you have participants with specific accessibility needs, ensure that the chosen accommodations are accessible and can accommodate their requirements. Check for wheelchair ramps, elevators, and accessible rooms or facilities.
  • Reviews and Recommendations: Read reviews or seek recommendations from reliable sources to gain insights into the quality and experiences of previous guests. This can help you make an informed decision and avoid potential issues.
  • Booking and Confirmation: Once you have identified suitable accommodations, contact the providers to check availability and make reservations. Ensure that you receive written confirmation detailing the dates, rates, and any other agreed-upon terms or requirements.

As part of the planning process, communicate the details of the accommodations to the senior class and their parents. Provide them with all the necessary information, including check-in procedures, room assignments, and any special instructions or requirements.

By organizing suitable accommodations, you create a comfortable and enjoyable home away from home for the senior class, allowing them to relax and recharge in between their exciting activities and adventures.

Step 8: Planning Activities and Sightseeing

Planning the activities and sightseeing itinerary is a crucial step in ensuring an engaging and memorable senior class trip. By carefully selecting and organizing the activities, you can offer diverse experiences that cater to the interests and preferences of the senior class. Follow these steps to plan an exciting itinerary:

  • Consider the Destination: Research the destination to identify its unique attractions and activities. Consider both popular tourist sites and hidden gems that offer an authentic experience. Tailor the activities to match the interests and theme of the senior class trip.
  • Solicit Input from the Senior Class: Involve the senior class in the planning process by soliciting their input and preferences. Conduct surveys or group discussions to gather ideas for activities and sightseeing. This not only engages the students but also ensures that the itinerary reflects their desires.
  • Mix of Educational and Fun Activities: Strike a balance between educational and fun activities. Incorporate visits to historical sites, museums, or cultural landmarks to provide educational opportunities. Additionally, include recreational activities, theme park visits, or outdoor adventures that allow students to bond and have fun.
  • Account for Free Time: Allocating some free time in the itinerary allows students to explore the destination on their own, shop, or relax. Balancing scheduled activities with free time gives students the opportunity to personalize their experience and enjoy spontaneous moments.
  • Consider Group Discounts: Contact activity providers, tourist attractions, and entertainment venues to inquire about group discounts or special rates for student groups. Many places offer reduced prices or customized experiences for larger groups.
  • Plan for Different Interests and Abilities: Take into account the diverse interests and abilities within the senior class. Ensure that the activities chosen cater to a range of preferences and accommodate students with varying physical abilities or limitations.
  • Account for Travel Time: Consider travel time between activities and factor it into the itinerary. Avoid planning activities that require extensive travel and back-to-back scheduling, as it can lead to exhaustion and decrease enjoyment.
  • Stay Organized with a Detailed Itinerary: Create a detailed itinerary that includes activity descriptions, timings, meeting points, and any additional instructions. Share this itinerary with the senior class, committee members, and chaperones to ensure everyone stays informed and organized.

When planning activities and sightseeing, keep in mind that flexibility is key. Allow room for adjustments and alternative plans in case of unforeseen circumstances or changes in the group’s interest. Be open to spontaneous opportunities that may arise during the trip.

The activities and sightseeing experiences should aim to create meaningful connections, foster cultural understanding, and provide lasting memories for the senior class as they explore and discover the destination together.

Step 9: Arranging Meals

Arranging meals for the senior class trip is an important aspect of ensuring that participants are well-fed, energized, and satisfied throughout their journey. Effective meal planning involves considering dietary restrictions, budget constraints, and the availability of dining options at the chosen destination. Follow these steps to arrange meals for your trip:

  • Determine Meal Requirements: Assess the number of meals that need to be provided during the trip. Consider which meals will be included, such as breakfast, lunch, dinner, or snacks. Take into account the activities and schedule to determine the most appropriate meal times.
  • Research Dining Options: Research the dining options available at the destination. Look for restaurants, cafes, food courts, or local eateries that can accommodate larger groups and are suitable for different dietary preferences.
  • Consider Dietary Restrictions: Take into account any dietary restrictions or allergies among the participants. Ensure that there are options available to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, or other specific dietary needs.
  • Plan for Different Budgets: While it may not be possible to provide every meal, plan for a mix of meals that cater to different budgets. Consider including a combination of affordable dining options, self-catered meals, and occasional special dining experiences.
  • Contact Restaurants in Advance: Reach out to selected restaurants or catering services to inquire about their group dining policies and availability. Confirm whether reservations are needed and ensure they can accommodate your group size.
  • Negotiate Group Rates: Inquire about group rates or discounts when making arrangements with restaurants. Many establishments offer special rates for large groups, which can help you stay within your budget while providing quality meals.
  • Consider On-the-go Options: If your itinerary involves being on the move, consider arranging grab-and-go meals or packing picnic lunches for the group. This allows for flexibility and ensures that meals can be enjoyed at convenient locations.
  • Stay Hydrated: Remember to include options for hydration, such as access to water stations, packed water bottles, or frequent breaks for water consumption, particularly during outdoor activities.
  • Communicate Meal Plans: Share the meal plan and any dietary restrictions with the senior class, chaperones, and the committee. Ensure that participants are aware of the chosen dining options and provide alternatives or suggestions for those with specific dietary needs.

As part of the planning process, budget for meals and communicate any additional costs to the senior class and their parents. Transparency in terms of the meals provided and any potential out-of-pocket expenses will help manage expectations and avoid surprises.

Remember, arranging meals is not solely about providing nourishment; it is an opportunity to explore the local cuisine, discover new flavors, and bond over shared dining experiences. Well-planned meals enhance the overall trip experience and create opportunities for the senior class to connect and build lasting memories.

Step 10: Collecting Payments and Managing Finances

Collecting payments and effectively managing the finances for the senior class trip is crucial to ensure that the trip remains within budget and all expenses are accounted for. Here’s how to handle the financial aspect of the trip:

  • Establish a Payment Schedule: Set a payment schedule that outlines the deadlines for collecting payments from participants. Clearly communicate the due dates and payment methods to the senior class and their parents. Consider offering different payment options, such as online transfers, checks, or cash.
  • Track Payments: Keep a detailed record of all payments received. Use a spreadsheet or financial software to track who has paid, the amount paid, and the balance owed. Regularly update the records and send reminders to those who have outstanding payments.
  • Manage the Trip Budget: Create a comprehensive budget that includes all expected expenses, such as transportation, accommodations, activities, meals, and any additional costs. Use the budget as a guide to monitor expenses and ensure that the trip remains within financial limits.
  • Negotiate Discounts: Take advantage of group rates and discounts offered by transportation providers, accommodations, activity providers, and dining establishments. Negotiate with vendors to secure the best prices and savings for the senior class trip.
  • Vendor Deposits: Some vendors may require a deposit to secure bookings. Allocate funds for these deposits and ensure that they are paid on time to confirm reservations. Keep track of the deposit amounts and deduct them from the overall trip budget.
  • Allocate Additional Funds: Set aside a contingency fund to account for unexpected expenses or emergencies that may arise during the trip. Having a buffer ensures that there are funds available to handle any unforeseen circumstances without disrupting the overall trip experience.
  • Communicate Financial Updates: Regularly communicate financial updates to the senior class, parents, and the committee. Provide transparency by sharing information about the overall trip expenses, incoming payments, and any adjustments made to the budget. This helps build trust and keeps everyone informed about the financial status of the trip.
  • Keep receipts and financial records: Maintain organized records of all financial transactions related to the trip. Keep receipts, invoices, and any other documentation as proof of expenses. This will be essential for accurate accounting and potential reimbursement processes.
  • Reconcile Finances: After the trip, reconcile the finances by comparing the actual expenses with the budgeted amounts. Make any necessary adjustments and ensure all outstanding payments are settled. Provide a final financial report to the senior class and school administration for transparency and accountability.

Managing finances requires attention to detail, timely communication, and diligent record-keeping. By carefully monitoring payments and expenses, you can ensure that the senior class trip remains financially sound and all participants have a clear understanding of their financial obligations.

Remember, open communication about finances builds trust and allows for collective accountability, fostering a positive experience for everyone involved in the senior class trip.

Step 11: Establishing Safety Guidelines and Policies

Establishing safety guidelines and policies is essential to ensure the well-being and security of all participants during the senior class trip. By implementing clear and comprehensive safety measures, you can minimize potential risks and create a safe environment for everyone involved. Here’s how to establish safety guidelines and policies:

  • Research Destination Safety: Conduct thorough research on the safety and security of the chosen destination. Stay updated on travel advisories or warnings issued by relevant authorities. Take into account any potential risks or precautions that need to be addressed.
  • Consult School Policies: Review the school’s existing policies on student safety during off-campus trips. Ensure that your plans align with these policies and make any necessary adjustments or additions to address specific concerns related to the senior class trip.
  • Consult with Experts: Seek advice and guidance from professionals with expertise in student safety and risk management. Consult with travel agents, tour operators, or local authorities to gain insights and recommendations on best practices for ensuring the safety of the senior class trip.
  • Identify and Assess Risks: Conduct a risk assessment specific to the senior class trip. Identify potential risks, such as transportation-related risks, activity-related risks, or health and medical considerations. Evaluate the severity and likelihood of each risk and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Establish Emergency Procedures: Develop emergency procedures that outline how to handle various emergency situations, including accidents, injuries, illness, or natural disasters. Communicate these procedures to all participants and ensure that designated leaders or chaperones are trained in first aid and emergency response.
  • Communicate Safety Guidelines: Clearly communicate safety guidelines to all participants, including students, teachers, parents, and chaperones. Cover topics such as appropriate behavior, curfew regulations, buddy systems, and guidelines for exploring the destination independently.
  • Obtain Necessary Permissions and Documentation: If required, ensure that all necessary permissions, waivers, medical forms, and emergency contact information are collected from participants. Keep these documents organized and easily accessible in case of any emergency or unforeseen circumstances.
  • Provide Safety Briefings: Conduct safety briefings before departing on the trip. Cover important safety information, including emergency procedures, designated meeting points, communication protocols, and guidelines for responsible behavior. Encourage participants to ask questions and clarify any concerns they may have.
  • Maintain Communication: Establish clear communication channels with the senior class, parents, and chaperones throughout the trip. Ensure that there is constant communication, especially during activities or sightseeing excursions. Provide contact information for emergency purposes and encourage regular check-ins.
  • Monitor and Adapt: Continuously monitor the safety and well-being of all participants during the trip. Remain vigilant for any changes in circumstances or unforeseen risks. Be prepared to adapt plans or activities if necessary to ensure the safety of the senior class.

By establishing safety guidelines and policies, you create an environment that promotes the well-being and security of all participants. A proactive approach to safety sets the foundation for a successful and worry-free senior class trip.

Remember, safety should always be the top priority, and it is important to stay informed, be prepared, and communicate effectively to mitigate any potential risks that may arise during the trip.

Step 12: Creating a Schedule and Itinerary

Creating a well-structured schedule and itinerary is crucial for ensuring a smooth and organized senior class trip. A comprehensive schedule helps keep participants informed and engaged, while an itinerary outlines the specific activities and timeline for the trip. • Review and Share the Schedule: Review the schedule and itinerary to ensure accuracy and feasibility. Share it with the senior class, parents, and the committee well in advance of the trip to allow for any necessary adjustments or clarifications.

While it’s important to have a structured schedule, be flexible and adaptable to unforeseen circumstances or changes. Allow for changes to the itinerary if needed to accommodate new opportunities or unforeseen challenges that may arise during the trip.

Remember, a well-planned schedule and itinerary provide a roadmap for a successful senior class trip, ensuring that participants have a clear understanding of the activities and are equipped to make the most of their journey.

Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

The company represents a collection of 30 travel brands — including the likes of Trafalgar and Insight Tours — which, altogether, cover seven continents. Offerings range from budget to luxury getaways, and everything from cruises to land tours. Thinking of taking a multigenerational trip? Browse the company's family experiences section, stocked with tours fit for all ages, whether you're into all-inclusive European river cruises or exploring U.S. national parks.

Country Walkers

Country Walkers aims to introduce travelers to new landscapes and cultures around the world by traveling on foot. Established in 1979, the Vermont-based operator offers walking tours in Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, and South America. Tour types include guided (in a small group of up to 18) and self-guided (in a private group of up to 12), providing a great option for independent exploration. Travelers can choose from five levels, starting at "easy walking," which includes a daily distance of two to six miles for up to four hours per day. "Moderate walking," the mid-range option, suggests four to 10 miles and up to six hours of walking per day. Trips at the "challenging walking" level might go up to seven hours a day on foot, covering anywhere from six to 14 miles. Guests of all ages should be able to find a destination and tour that's best suited for their interests and fitness level.

30 Epic Graduation Trip Ideas (2024 USA & International)

30 graduation trip ideas

Whether you have a senior in high school or college, graduation is something to be celebrated! Some may want a party, a car, or help with their college tuition, but many would love to celebrate this accomplishment with a dream trip. As the school year begins its rapid roll toward the inevitable end of an era, it is time to start thinking about graduation trip ideas.

A grad trip serves the double purpose of celebrating the completion of this phase of schooling and an enticement for those fledglings to return to the nest from time to time. We put together a list of options for my high school senior to choose from and for those of you looking for high school graduation trip ideas, college graduation trip ideas, or senior trip ideas, I have some great suggestions for you!

The thing to consider though when planning a high school or college graduation trip is that while you may want it to be a bucket list experience or a trip of a lifetime; if you really want to take a trip right after graduation in May or June, you need to keep the season in mind.

Summer is the high season for family travel, which means crowds, peak pricing, and a need for advance planning. If you can travel in early to mid-June, you can avoid the high peak that starts in early July as European schools let out for the summer.

It is also an ideal time to visit destinations in the Northern Hemisphere, but Southern Hemisphere destinations vary in attractiveness from June-August as they experience their winter months. So forget the idea of seeing penguins in Antarctica and it may not be ideal for hiking in Patagonia or New Zealand either unless you want to wait for Christmas break. But there are still so many fantastic destinations to choose from.

Need help planning a special graduation trip? Let me know and I’ll refer you to a travel advisor that specializes in family trips.

15 U.S. Graduation Trip Ideas

Note: This content is sponsored by Allianz Partners (AGA Service Co.) and I have received financial compensation but all opinions expressed are my own.

Even if you have traveled extensively in the United States, there are still so many destinations and experiences that can make a graduation trip truly special. Here are a few that particularly shine in June.

lighting torch at sunset on Black Rock on Maui

The exotic allure of the Aloha State may be the perfect balm after a stressful senior year. The Big Island of Hawaii is the only place in the United States to see a live volcano, while Maui is the perfect place for adventure activities like sunrise cycling down a volcanic crater or driving the road to Hana.

Just keep in mind that June through November is technically hurricane season, although big storms are rare. We visited in late June and had pretty great weather, with just some rainstorms that delivered beautiful rainbows. Find out how much a family trip to Hawaii costs .

Bear in river

Summer is the best time to visit Alaska. An Alaskan cruise is definitely a great way to see the most popular ports in Alaska, but to get a real sense of this vast and rugged state, you need to spend some time on land too (and not just on excursions .) If planning a trip to Alaska feels too daunting, you can join one of Austin Adventures’ group family trips, like the one to Kenai Fjords and Peninsula .

You can experience calving glaciers, search for wildlife, and experience the brilliance of the Midnight Sun in the Last Frontier.

Yosemite National Park, California

Women with arms up overlooking view in Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park can get crazily crowded in the summer, but if you go early enough in June, you can get there before the worst of the crowds and when the water is still strong, resulting in beautiful, powerful waterfalls. (See this guide to easy hikes in Yosemite .)

Listen to our podcast episode on Yosemite National Park for ideas on the best places to stay, hikes, and other things to do in Yosemite .

Glacier National Park, Montana

Boat on Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is one of the most popular destinations in the U.S. National Parks system and getting a reservation in the summer can be challenging. But head to Glacier Country in early summer to beat the crowds and get better rates. Just keep in mind that there will still be snow on the ground, and it is likely that parts of the Going-to-the-Sun road that connect the parts of the park will still be closed until sometime in July, although I was there in mid-June last year and it was open.

But there is still plenty of hiking and wildlife viewing to enjoy (plus a chance to see glaciers!). After a few days in the park, you can enjoy some fun adventures near Glacier or relax at Flathead Lake Lodge, an all-inclusive dude ranch , or spend time exploring more of Western Montana .

Walt Disney World, Florida

Magic Kingdom castle from across the lake

From weddings to birthdays, every special occasion is a good fit for a trip to Disney for lovers of magic and the mouse. It might be the perfect time to splurge on a VIP tour to make the trip extra special.

While there are plenty of rides at Disney that teens love, thrill-seekers will also like adding on a few days at Universal or some of the water parks , especially for those hot June days. And when it rains, try some of these nearby Orlando attractions .

Grand Canyon, Arizona

Grand Canyon (photo from Canva)

There are two huge downsides to visiting the Grand Canyon in the summer — the crowds and the heat. But, if you go in June it is a little more manageable, especially if you go to the less-visited North Rim, which doesn’t even open until mid-May.

To make the trip extra special, and thrilling, you can arrange for helicopter flights over the canyon, mule rides or hikes into the canyon, or multi-day float trips along the Colorado River. You can also make this part of an epic southwest road trip .

New York, New York

View of lower Manhattan at sunset from the Empire State building

Bright lights, big city — if your graduate has never visited the Big Apple, a visit to New York City can make a great graduation trip. Get tickets for the must-see Broadway show. Visit museums. Take a food tour. Go shopping. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. The possibilities are endless in the city that never sleeps.

Make sure you fit in some of the newer attractions like Hudson Yards, Summit at One Vanderbilt, Little Island @ Pier 55, the 9/11 Memorial, the Highline, or even try the new Edge NYC Skydeck. Teens also love Instagramable food stops like rainbow bagels, taiyakis, specialty cupcakes, crazy milkshakes, and more.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas sign with city skyline behind

College grads may enjoy exercising some of their new liberties in Las Vegas, but even high school graduates can enjoy under-21 attractions. The hotels along Vegas’ famous Strip are a spectacle in and of itself. Add to that one-of-a-kind entertainment, celebrity chef-owned restaurants, and thrills like the X-Scream ride at the Stratosphere Hotel, FlyOver Las Vegas , or the SkyJump off the Stratosphere Tower.

Of course outside of Las Vegas, you can also go hiking in Red Rock Canyon, visit Hoover Dam, or drive a luxury sports car or race car.

California Coast

Tips for driving Highway One on the California Coast

Rent a convertible and take your grad on a classic U.S. road trip down the California coast . Start off with a few days in San Francisco , then head down to Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea . Next, take your time exploring the beautiful coastline along Highway 1 down to Big Sur.

On the central coast, you can ride on the sand dunes, zip line through a winery, and enjoy all the small beach towns on your way to Los Angeles . Finish off with surf lessons in Huntington Beach, a tour of Universal Studios, or a day at Disneyland. If you have a college grad you can even add on a few days in Sonoma or Paso Robles for wine tasting.

Puerto Rico

El Yunque rainforest in Puerto Rico with mist over mountains

Craving an island vacation? You don’t need a passport to visit Puerto Rico. There you can enjoy gorgeous beaches, the El Yunque rainforest, outdoor adventures, and soak up the history in Old San Juan.

In Vieques and elsewhere on the island, you can even experience the magic of bioluminescence with a nighttime kayaking excursion.

Utah’s Mighty 5 National Parks

Delicate arch in Arches National Park (from Canva)

Things are starting to heat up in the southwest in June, but you can still fit in an epic trip to all five of Utah’s national parks — Arches, Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef National Parks. Or, if you really enjoy hiking and getting off the beaten path, focus on just a couple of the parks. If you are visiting two parks or more, be sure to invest in the National Parks Pass .

Start off in Salt Lake City and then head to Moab to explore Arches and Canyonlands. Next, head over to Capitol Reef and Bryce. Finish up in St. George and Zion National Park. You can then fly out of Las Vegas or loop back up to Salt Lake City. Be sure to listen to this podcast for some great tips on off-the-beaten-path stops on a Southwest Grand Circle road trip or read my friend Lesli’s Utah National Parks road trip itinerary .

Maine Windjammer Cruise

Schooner Heritage on the water

Large ship cruising may not be your cup of tea, but there are other small ship possibilities available. If your student loves sailing, then a trip aboard one of the Maine Windjammer cruises will be right up their alley. Enjoy gourmet meals and lobster bakes on the beach. Assist the crew and enjoy watching the scenic coastline glide by. Explore the rugged coastline and small seaside towns of the Maine coast .

For a real splurge, book cabins with your friends and family for a group vacation on the sea. Pair it up with a Coastal Maine road trip or a fun glamping stay near Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park .

Key West, Florida

Florida Keys Overseas Highway

One of my favorite east coast road trips is along the Overseas Highway in the Florida Keys . This scenic trip is great for graduates that love water sports — like windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking, and scuba diving.

It is also a perfect spot for future marine biologists to visit a sea turtle hospital, explore marine preserves, study dolphins, and enjoy nature up close. Of course, all the key lime pie is also a great perk!

New Orleans, Louisiana

Balconies in the French Quarter New Orleans

Your foodie teen will enjoy a trip to the Big Easy for a food and music extravaganza. Enjoy food tours, cooking classes, and everything from celebrity-chef restaurants to the best of diners, drive-ins, and dives.

Then soak in the culture with history tours (or ghost tours), a visit to Mardi Gras World, and plenty of live jazz music. If you have time to get out of town, be sure to try an airboat tour!

Black Hills, South Dakota

Mount Rushmore

There are tons of ways for teens and young adults to seek adventure in the Black Hills . You can bike along the Mickelson Trail, one of the old rail trails that runs for 108.8 miles from Edgemont to Deadwood. Don’t worry, you don’t need to bike the whole thing. Instead, you can rent bikes and arrange for shuttle pick-ups and drop-offs to only bike as far as you choose. There is also go rock climbing, horseback riding, and enjoy amazing wildlife viewing in Custer State Park.

Be sure to leave extra days for side ventures to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming and the stunning Badlands National Park . And even if they haven’t had enough of learning for a while, make sure to visit Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Minuteman Missile Silo Historic Site.

15 International Graduation Trip Ideas

There are so many bucket list destinations that are great places to visit in June for a graduation trip. Here are a few options for adventure seekers, outdoor lovers, cultural explorers, and wildlife lovers.

Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsness

June is my absolute favorite time to visit Iceland, especially if you can be there for the Summer Solstice. Just be aware that many businesses and attractions are closed on June 17th for Iceland Independence Day. The weather is starting to warm up and you have full days of sunlight to explore.

Iceland is the perfect spot for outdoor adventurers. Spend a few days on the gorgeous South Coast chasing waterfalls, visiting black sand beaches, hiking on glaciers, and sailing between the icebergs. To get away from the crowds, spend a few days up in the rugged and remote West Fjords . Find out how much a trip to Iceland costs and read my Iceland travel tips .

family in Shinsekai

It took us until my daughter was in college to finally get to Japan, but this bucket list destination is perfect for a graduation trip. Immersing yourselves in a new culture is great practice for the new challenges that lie ahead for your grad. While things will be heating up in June and you can expect some rain, your grad will love exploring the food, shopping, and cultural quirkiness that lies side-by-side with ancient shrines and temples.

If you can spend two weeks in Japan , it would be ideal for getting to see Tokyo , Kyoto , and Osaka , with time for a day trip or two as well.

Giants Causeway Northern Ireland

With a drinking age of 18, graduates might enjoy some newfound freedoms in the pubs of Ireland — after all, what better place to soak in the Irish culture? Start off in Dublin , and then head off to Northern Ireland and the Coastal Causeway .

In the Republic of Ireland, don’t miss the Cliffs of Moher and a drive along the Wild Atlantic Way. The town of Killarney and the Dingle Peninsula are some of my favorite spots in Ireland. Find out how much a trip to Ireland costs and tips for traveling to Ireland .

Azores, Portugal

waterfall at Ribeira dos Caldeiroes

Natural beauty abounds in the Azores , the archipelago of Portuguese islands in the Atlantic. In June, big hydrangea blooms decorate the island in a mix of pinks, purples, and blues. This is a perfect setting for outdoor lovers, particularly on the island of Pico, home to the Mount Pico volcano. For adventure seekers, you can go coasteering, canyoning, hiking, surfing, and more on the largest island of São Miguel .

Finish up with a few days on the mainland enjoying the colorful festivals taking place in Lisbon or Porto . The Azores are a great destination for the grad that likes to do something different than everyone else and its blend of the best of Hawaii, Iceland, and Ireland make it truly unique.

Path across water to Naxos town

A week or two spent island hopping in the Cyclades is a perfect way to chill out after the exhaustion of final exams. Mid-June through mid-July is the perfect time to visit. The islands of Santorini and Mykonos are jammed in the summer, especially once the cruise ships start coming to port, but you can still avoid crowds on smaller islands like Naxos or spread out on Crete . The weather is warm but not scorching hot, and the daytime winds are not as strong as later in the summer.

Start off in Mykonos or Santorini for an introduction to the Greek Islands’ party scene, and then spend some time at some of the quieter islands, like Naxos, Paros, Crete, or some of the off-the-beaten-track islands. Find out how much a trip to Greece costs or check out our 10-day Greece itinerary.

Tuscan hillside

Like much of Europe, Italy is beautiful in early June, before the heat and tourists descend. You will want to hit the highlights in Rome and Florence , but then take some time to relax and enjoy the Tuscan countryside where you can bike through vineyards and swim in thermal pools.

You may even be able to arrange to test drive a Ferrari or sample the culinary delights in Bologna or Parma on your way to Venice . Finish up with some hiking in the Italian Dolomites. In June you are guaranteed sunny days and warm evenings in the mountains, with not too much humidity. After a day of hiking or biking, enjoy the local culinary delicacies over lunch at a mountain rifugio or a slopeside picnic.

If your grad prefers lazing on the beach, skip the gondolas and mountains and head down to the Amalfi Coast or the gorgeous island of Capri . Just make your reservations early and don’t be surprised to be rubbing elbows with newlyweds and retirees.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

History buffs (and Game of Thrones fans) will love the medieval city of Dubrovnik on the Dalmatian Coast. June is the perfect time to explore before the peak summer crowds and cruise ships arrive in July and August.

To escape the crowds, the best way to explore Croatia is by boat. Charter a sailboat and head out on the Adriatic Sea to nearby Lokrum Island or further to Korcula, one of the more charming islands in Croatia. There are also adventure activities for active teens such as biking trips, hiking, and water sports.

Switzerland

Matterhorn behind a blue lake and green fields in Switzerland

Your young adventurer may enjoy hiking in the Swiss Alps after graduation. It can still be rainy in May and early June, or snowy at higher altitudes, so shoot for late June or even early July. There are many routes for hut-to-hut (or hotel-to-hotel) hiking. Or you can settle in near Interlaken and soak in the scenery and outdoor adventures.

Interlaken is home to many extreme sports, including mountaineering, bungee jumping, zorbing, skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, helicopter skydiving, white water rafting, canyoning, ice climbing, rock climbing, trekking, and so much more.

Art lovers will also want to check out the international art show at Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland, which draws top artists from around the world. In Basel, you can also bike to three countries in one day! Bike to France and have a croissant, have a beer and lunch in Germany, and return to Switzerland and float down the river before dinner.

Dad and teen in Paris

The weather in Paris in June is perfect, the cherry blossoms are in bloom, and there are long days of sunshine to explore the city at its most romantic. Of course, summer is also when the tourists descend so it is critical to go in June (the earlier the better) before school lets out for summer in France and the United Kingdom.

Even so, it is important to book early for prime locations (see my guide for renting an apartment in Paris ) and attractions (reservations and/or timed entry tickets are needed for many attractions, including the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.)

It is also a city where you can give your teen a little independence to practice language skills and prepare to go out on their own. Indulge your graduate’s interests in art, history, or food with private tours and cooking classes. Find out how much a trip to Paris costs , check out our 5-day Paris itinerary , and download our Paris trip planning checklist .

South Africa

Zebras on savannah in Tanzania (from Canva)

June to August is winter in South Africa, but it is also the ideal time to book a safari in Kruger or other parks. The game viewing is ideal because the bush is less dense, but the beautiful golden grasses capture the light and provide excellent photo opportunities. Plus, the dry weather typically means few to no mosquitos!

While June is typically the rainy season in Cape Town, it has a little bit of everything, which makes it the perfect destination for a graduation trip. The city is surrounded by beaches and mountains, with plenty of opportunities for adventure from cage-diving with sharks to zip-lining through mountains and forests. Your graduate can also snorkel with seals or go sea kayaking with penguins. There is also the potential to see whales along South Africa’s Whale Coast between June and November.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Watching The Great Migration in Serengeti National Park is an unforgettable experience, and June is a great time to see it. In the Western Corridor area, you can find herds of wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras as they make their way north in search of food, water, and breeding grounds.

Because June falls within Serengeti’s dry season, you’ll find less foliage, making animals easier to spot, as well as fewer mosquitos. The temperature is moderate and pleasant during the day, but chilly for early morning safaris or nights in the safari tents. This is truly a bucket list experience for families.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

While technically winter, the weather is never too terribly cold in Australia and you will find good deals on flights and hotels. It is also a perfect time to see the Great Barrier Reef. There is very little rain so diving conditions are at their peak — perfect for checking scuba diving off a bucket list.

Beyond the Reef, northern Queensland, the Northern Territory, and northern Western Australia are at their best in June. Remember, the further south you go, the colder it will be.

Palm tree and white sand in Fiji

If a tropical escape is what your student needs to relax, set your sights a bit further than the Caribbean all the way to the South Pacific. It is also technically winter in Fiji in June, but the temps never get too cold and you can just miss the summer rush that starts in July. June is one of the best months to visit Fiji, with ideal weather, countless activity options, cheaper hotel rates, and smaller crowds.

From the rich Fijian culture to the incredible beaches, there are countless reasons why Fiji’s 333 islands are the perfect vacation destination for a graduation trip.

Machu Picchu in Peru

Does your student love to learn about ancient civilizations or archeology? Summer is a great time to visit the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu. Start your journey in Lima, Peru’s vibrant capital city, or Cusco, a scenic three-hour train ride from Machu Picchu. Just be sure to give yourself time to adjust to the altitude, especially if you are considering hiking in the Sacred Valley. Reservations are also needed at this popular tourist destination.

The Amazon’s dry season starts in June, so you can pair a visit to Machu Picchu with time spent exploring the rainforest or traveling the Amazon by boat.

View of pools and beach at Ritz Carlton Aruba from above

Sitting below the hurricane belt, Aruba, along with its neighboring islands of Bonaire and Curaçao, enjoys a dry season in the summer. Yet since summer in the Caribbean isn’t high on many people’s lists, you can also enjoy lower rates and fewer crowds.

Off-road on this desert island, go horseback riding on the beach, enjoy sunset catamaran sails, and spend some time with flamingoes on this Dutch island.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

Graduation cap and diploma with Allianz Travel insurance website on phone

Once you have booked your dream trip to celebrate your graduate, don’t forget to purchase travel insurance! Travel insurance can protect you in the case of unexpected and unforeseen circumstances that may arise on your trip such as trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, theft, emergency medical expenses and transportation (this is especially important when traveling out of the country!), travel delays, rental car damage, and more.

Even better, also gift your graduate an annual travel insurance plan that protects their trips all year long. It is the perfect gift for kids that will be flying back and forth to college or young adults just starting out in their career and spending their newfound paid time off traveling.

Before we sent our daughter off to college in Arizona, I made sure she was covered by an AllTrips Premier annual travel insurance plan from Allianz Travel. Allianz Travel has been our trusted travel insurance provider for years and the investment has paid off in multitudes. Not only do I know that her trips to school and back are protected against flight cancellations, travel delays, and lost luggage, but as an inexperienced solo traveler it gives us both peace of mind knowing that she has access to a 24-hour hotline for assistance on all sorts of travel emergencies.

Shop for the Allianz Travel Insurance policy that is right for you!

Are you looking for some awesome graduation trip ideas for your senior? I’ve been there and I have a list of ideas that are perfect for your teen!

This year I have a senior in high school. When I started this blogging journey, it was to help families travel more before their kids’ grow up and move out . And now I’m here. My son is about to embark on his college journey and move out, at least for a little while. Which is why I needed some ideas for a graduation trip he won’t forget.

I promised each of my children to take them on fun senior trips. I fully believe travel helps us spend quality time together that we don’t get in our day-to-day lives. Travel removes the responsibilities of home life, school, activities, and obligations. And since I’ve focused on travel with teenagers over the last 10 years, many of our past vacations inspired me to create this list.

As a high school senior (who’s also dual-enrolled to earn his Associate’s Degree) there is a lot of stress and pressure of finishing school, choosing a college, moving away from home, meeting new people, and all that those life changes bring. One last hurrah and a trip of a lifetime is not only a way to celebrate this important time in his life, it’s a great way to have family time before his next big step.

As someone deeply passionate about family travel, I’ve been on this blogging journey to help families make the most of their grad trips. The following fun senior trip ideas cover everything from a group graduation vacation, travel with a senior class, or epic trips for high school graduates with friends or family .

Here’s the deal: Research consistently emphasizes the positive impact of well-planned graduation trips, not just on the graduating senior but on the entire family. Families who’ve followed my suggestions have had some incredible journeys.

Graduation Trips on a Budget

High school graduation trips do not have to break the bank. Depending on the kind of trip your teen wants, finding affordable graduation trips in USA and staying on a small budget can still be a lot of fun.

graduation trip ideas 1 Young adults who want to get away from their everyday lives for a few days will enjoy exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Located on the big island of Hawaii, this popular park offers hiking trails, sightseeing, lava tubes, and much more. Backpacking is allowed at certain sites within park limits. A trip to Kilauea Iki can take visitors through many of these features in one hike, making it one of our favorite graduation trip ideas for young adults.

1. New York City

I fully believe New York City not only is the ultimate travel experience today, but it is also well within a budget vacation option. It’s been one of our best graduation trips.

Flights to NYC are usually not too expensive, but they do increase as summer approaches. Book a trip immediately after graduation in late May if possible. Keep an eye on Skyscanner for the best flight prices.

What to do:

Places such as Times Square, Central Park, Statue of Liberty , Wall Street, Trinity Church (where the Hamiltons are buried and as seen on National Treasure), The New York Public Library, and Washington Square Park, are free to visit. Or in the case of the Lady Liberty, very reasonable cost.

These are places that your teen will know from TV and Movies. We have always had a great time seeing our favorite places in person. Hit Bedford and Grove to see the Friends building. Wander through Central Park. Search for filming locations of your favorite media and you’ll come up with a list to visit on your own.

Eating in the big city of New York can also be reasonable as well. Just stay away from the touristy section of Times Square when it comes to dining. Your best option is downtown for Chinatown or Little Italy.

Where to stay:

To make it reasonable, stay outside the city and take the subway in. We’ve found charming VRBOs in Jersey City (which isn’t too far from the Statue of Liberty Ferry and is only about 4 stops into the city.

Camping is another excellent choice for traveling on a budget . Your choice of destination is unlimited. If your grad wants to even try out a solo trip, look to one of the state parks near you. That way your teen gets some independence but isn’t too far away for their first time out on their own.

If you don’t want to go all-in on buying new camping gear , you can also consider one of your state parks with cabin accommodations.

3. Rent a Campervan

When my son and I started tossing around ideas for high school senior trip ideas, the one we landed on was renting a campervan to explore the National Parks in California .

We are renting with Escape Campervans , out of San Francisco. Drivers do have to be at least 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license, so this is not the kind of trip a high school senior could do. However, we found it’s an amazing way to see a lot at a lower cost. Our van rental costs about $300 more than a car rental for the same time period and includes our sleeping and cooking facilities. The only other things we are paying for are food (which we would have to do anyway) and campsites.

Escape Campervans have locations in:

  • Los Angeles
  • Salt Lake City
  • San Francisco

You can rent round trip or between any of those destinations.

4. South Dakota

At first glance, South Dakota’s Badlands National Park and the Black Hills aren’t necessarily places that jump to mind for a graduation trip , but their rugged and untouched beauty will leave your senior in awe.

While most national parks require at least a few miles of hiking to reach their greatest points of interest, Badlands National Park gives you stunning views almost immediately—like Door Trail or Badlands Loop Road.

Feel as if you’re in an Epic Star Wars or Star Trek adventure with some of the landscapes as well. Notch Trail winds through canyon shelves and ends in dramatic views that will definitely give you the feeling of being on another planet.

Ideas for Graduation trips with Family

If your senior is moving away to college in the fall, this may be the last time you get to take whole family vacations for a while. With college breaks not always lining up with younger kids’ school holidays, it’s the perfect time to do one last big hurrah with the whole gang.

Plus these trips make for amazing travel photos .

Why visiting Walt Disney World is better with older children.

5. Walt Disney World

If you haven’t done Disney as a whole family, this may be the time to do it. Not only is Disney better with older kids , in my opinion, it’s the perfect place to celebrate. With so much more attractions geared towards older kids such as Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy, Disney as one of your high school graduation vacation ideas is a fun for the whole family idea.

Walt Disney World is the kind of place where you can spend a few days or a few weeks and still have plenty to do. Don’t sweat trying to do it all, it’s nearly impossible. Pick a few of your must-dos, and enjoy the time together.

I would recommend staying on property in order to use Disney transportation.

Otherwise, consider getting a vacation home with a pool where you can have a day to chill poolside, yet still have all the things you need to snack and feed your hungry family.

Of course, if you’re in the Orlando area and are more thrill seeker fans, you can combine Disney with a trip to Universal. Grab my what not to miss at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter .

If you’re looking for ideas for a graduation trip that gives your senior a chance to bond with his family, then book a cruise .

You and your loved ones can enjoy sailing together while you soak up some Vitamin D on deck. Cruise ships also offer a variety of activities and events like spa treatments, scavenger hunts, dancing, and more—so everyone can find something they enjoy.

Alaska National Parks Road Trip

7. Alaskan Cruise or Alaska Road Trip

No matter what time of year, there’s never a bad time to visit Alaska—the northernmost U.S. state.

Although it can be expensive to fly, you’ll be able to experience wildlife, pristine landscapes, and exciting Alaskan festivities. This makes it one of the best places for a senior trip.

If you go during winter, you’ll get to see spectacular views of snow-covered mountains and frozen lakes that are sure to make your senior feel warm inside (no pun intended). Not to mention, this is a fantastic way to see the Northern Lights without leaving the country.

Consider either an Alaskan cruise as a bucket list to see incredible glaciers, or explore further inland with a road trip through the National Parks in Alaska.

Alaska was a bucket list item for us and an incredible way to view vistas we don’t see every day. Plus, your teen may be interested in summer employment in Alaska in the future. We met many college kids spending their summers in the Last Frontier.

8. All-Inclusive Graduation Trips

Like a cruise but on land, an all-inclusive resort is a fantastic way to make sure you’re taken care of during your vacation. Instead of paying for each individual part of your trip separately, you pay for it all in one fell swoop.

One of my favorite high school graduation family trip ideas, all-inclusive let you bond, do activities together or on your own, and generally just relax.

And, with options like room service and on-site dining, you can focus on spending time with your family instead of having to go out into town or eat in your hotel room. This can range from luxury Club Med destinations to horseback riding dude ranches.

Some top choices in the US include:

  • Tyler Place Family Resort – Vermont
  • Bungalows Key Largo – Florida Keys
  • Fair Hills Resort – Minnesota

I would recommend one of the many charming VRBO rentals near the National Park for perfect family seclusion.

Group Graduation Vacation Ideas with Friends

If you’re willing to send your teen off with a group of friends, now’s the perfect time to learn some independence and responsibility. Of course, you may want to read my tips for a graduate here . These ideas for the best senior trips with friends are full of adventure.

10. Road Trips

Who doesn’t love a road trip ? With some careful planning, you can create an unforgettable experience that will be one of your teen’s favorite memories from high school. Whether it’s going to visit colleges or seeing national landmarks, there are so many great graduation trip ideas for teens.

For ideas, look to the miles and miles of ideas in Road Trip USA by Moon guides . Perhaps they want to re-enact the Oregon Trail?

11. National Park Hiking

Take a hike. The nation’s outdoor spaces are vast and beautiful, and they’re within easy reach of most towns. National parks are the best places for a senior trip.

Get your teen a National Parks Pass that they can use all year long and save on entrance fees.

Just because your teen graduated doesn’t mean he or she has to sit inside studying all summer! A hike is a perfect way to get some fresh air and test his or her new sense of responsibility. For bucket list destinations try Yosemite National Park or Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Rafting down the Colorado River

12. White Water Rafting Grand Canyon

The Colorado River is one of America’s greatest rivers and it has a history steeped in both adventure and danger. Paddle through parts of the Grand Canyon.

They’ll get to see up close stunning views, and spend some quality time with their friends.

Plus you don’t need any previous experience to participate— professional guides will take care of all that for you! For a guided tour, search here .

13. South Padre Island

Is a beach destination worth considering if your grads want to head to an island? The island is located on South Padre Island along Texas’s Gulf Coast and offers tons of things to do including surfing, swimming, and fishing. These activities are perfect for spending time with their friends while giving them an adventure they won’t forget. There are also plenty of hotels to choose from that offer packages geared toward students, making it easy to plan a fun trip!

14. Music Festivals

For an experience that will bring your teen and her friends closer together, send her off to a music festival. Plus, it’s a great way to stay connected with your child in an age when texting and Snapchat takes precedence over phone calls and weekend visits. And because most music festivals take place at different times of the year, there’s sure to be one she’ll love no matter what time of year it is.

Graduation Trip Ideas include beaches with palm trees and people in the shade.

Beach Destinations

If a tropical destination is what your grad has in mind, you don’t need to leave the country. Either the island nation of Puerto Rico or the southernmost spot of Key West are great ideas for a graduation trip.

graduation trip ideas 5 Young adults who want to get away from their everyday lives for a few days will enjoy exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. 15. Puerto Rico

No passport is required to get to Puerto Rico. Because it’s a US Territory, you can travel here as you would within the United States. College students can take advantage of cheap flights and warm weather. A four day itinerary in Puerto Rico will hit some of the island’s best spots.

San Juan is home to several historic sites worth exploring. The city also has tons of restaurants that serve up authentic Latin American cuisine.

The island also has plenty of beaches and places to go surfing. You could even do a natural waterslide and rainforest hike .

16. Key West

The southernmost city in Florida, Key West is known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and eclectic nightlife. There’s no shortage of fun here; a visit to Mallory Square and Duval Street will provide you with everything from street performers to food vendors and lounges – just be prepared to see some serious sunburns if you plan on spending your time on the beach.

We’re back in Hawaii, this time to Maui for surf’s up. For a graduation trip you’ll never forget, Maui is one of our top picks. With its warm weather, beautiful beaches, and year-round sunsets, it’s one of Hawaii’s most popular destinations. There are plenty of things to do on your trip here including visiting historic sites like Pearl Harbor and snorkeling in Makena. There are also opportunities for surfing, hiking, and exploring rainforests.

For those who want to hit some waves while they’re in town, you can choose from several options when it comes to surfing lessons . At Kahului Beach Park (the birthplace of modern surfing), there are instructors available that will teach you how to ride surfboards as well as stand-up paddleboards.

**2024 Note** Maui, due to the fires, may not be ready to welcome visitors yet. Be sure to inquire with locals before booking your trip to ensure you’re not doing more harm than good by traveling there.

18. Tybee Island and Savannah

If you’re looking for remote beaches mixed with old world Southern charm, Tybee Island and Savannah are my choice for your graduation trip with your teens.

First, let’s talk about the beaches of Tybee Island. this is a true hidden gem along the Georgia coastline that offers pristine beaches, sandy shores, and fresh seafood.

Take a leisurely bike ride along the picturesque streets or embark on a kayaking excursion to discover the islands natural beauty.

Savannah, in addition to it’s ornate antebellum architecture, is home to the Savannah College of Art and Design. If your teen is into art, fashion, or film, this school has woven its creative influence throughout the charming city. See a mural in a local business, it’s likely a SCAD student may have worked on it.

Check out the SCAD fashion or film festival put on each year by the school and combine your kids love into a trip they’ll never forget.

Bright Lights Big Cities

If you have culture or movie buffs as kids, some of the bigger cities might be just what they want to experience. We’ve already mentioned what a great place New York City is on a budget. If you’re willing to splurge, look to add an On Location Movie Tour . They have TV & Movie Sites , Marvel , and more. Check out the NYC and Boston Tours here.

19. Chicago

I’ve always thought Chicago is a fantastic big city that feels like a small town. It’s midwest charm, history, and architecture offer plenty to see and do.

A trip to Chicago is a must for any comedy fan. Second City, one of comedy’s most famous institutions, is located just north of the Chicago River. Their interactive improv courses are also an awesome way to get your grad laughing. After class, you can grab dinner at any of the many restaurants that surround it—from Korean fried chicken to BBQ pizza and artisan cheeses.

And while you’re in Chicago, baseball fans will love checking out Wrigley Field.

And don’t miss such Chicago food staples as Lou Malnati’s Deep Dish Pizza, and a Chicago-style dog from Portillos.

20. Los Angeles

No matter what you’re into, Los Angeles has it. The entertainment capital of America, LA is a great choice for your grad trip. Be sure to visit Rodeo Drive, Hollywood, and Malibu (the movie stars’ playground). You might even spot a celebrity or two!

One of LA’s top attractions is Universal Studios . It has rides, shows, and a lot more fun to offer. If your grad likes Harry Potter, this is the place to try all kinds of butterbeer . Everyone will be amazed by what they see there. Also, try to attend an NBA game at Staples Center.

21. San Diego

What teen doesn’t dream of an amazing trip to Comic-Con? In San Diego, your soon-to-be grad can bask in geek culture and look forward to a new adventure that his friends will envy—and remember. Make sure you take pictures of him with as many superheroes as possible for bragging rights. If there’s one thing we learned from The Hobbit, it’s that everyone loves Legolas!

graduation trip ideas 6 Young adults who want to get away from their everyday lives for a few days will enjoy exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. 22. New Orleans

I love New Orleans. Beyond Bourbon Street, there’s a lot for teens to do in New Orleans .

The birthplace of jazz, this city will give you and your teen a new appreciation for the cultural rich music on dozens of street corners in the French Quarter.

Then there’s the food. If you have a teen that loves to eat, they can explore their likes and dislikes with New Orleans staples such as beignets, gumbo, crawfish, po’boys, muffalettas, and jambalaya, just to name a few.

You can also get an authentic Mardi Gras experience, without the chaos that is Bourbon street the day of. Mardi Gras officially begins on January 6th (Three Kings Day) and there are events from January until Mardi Gras day throughout the city.

I’d recommend staying in the Warehouse District for ease of access to the best spots in the city.

Graduation Trip Ideas

23. Seattle

My daughter’s choice for her graduation trip is Seattle, Washington. She’s a music fan and coffee lover, as well as enjoying nature. This gateway to the Pacific Northwest makes it a perfect destination.

While in Seattle, explore the Pike Place Market , the Museum of Pop Culture, and a trip to the top of the Space Needle.

While many people know that Starbucks arose from Seattle, the Emerald City was some to quite the coffee culture long before Starbucks became a household name. Get your teen ready for late night studying with the Seattle Coffee Culture Tour .

And of course, if you’re like me, and grew up on 90s grunge, visiting the birthplace of your favorite artists with your teen is an incredible shared experience.

Outside the main city, visit Olympic National Park , a vast park of nearly a million acres with several distinct ecosystems, including a rainforest.

If you have a little extra time, about 3 hours from Seattle is North Cascades National Park.

24. Portland

Portland, Oregon is known for its weirdness. In fact, it’s their slogan, Keep Portland Weird.

Portland is filled with quirky neighborhoods, artisanal spirit, and a thriving food scene. The city has a vibe like no other.

Additionally, Portland is committed to sustainability and green energy. Be on the lookout for how they are keeping to “green” practices that connect it to the nature around it.

Favorites in Portland include Powell’s City of Books, one of the world’s largest independent bookstores, the Japanese gardens, and nearby drives to dozens of waterfalls.

18 Unforgettable Senior Trip Ideas for 2024

Looking for the best senior trip ideas for your soon-to-be-graduated teenager?

As high school teachers, the parents of a high schooler, and world travelers, we have a lot of experience traveling and talking about travel with young people.

Here are our 18 senior trip ideas for places to travel to celebrate with your graduate.

High School graduation marks an important coming-of-age moment for students and families. And a senior trip offers an opportunity to mark this important moment.

Some of the links in this blog are affiliate links. If you click and purchase, we will receive a commission at no extra charge to you.  We only recommend activities or places we have experienced, and all opinions are our own.

senior trip ideas--what to do after graduation

What Is A Senior Trip?

Traditionally, a senior trip is an opportunity for seniors to have one last experience together as a class before they graduate. In this traditional notion, senior trips are something your senior organizes with their friends.

However, with travel being more accessible to more people, the idea of a senior trip as a special trip taken by a family to celebrate their child’s graduation is fast growing in popularity. Therefore, we have chosen to list our ideas by location not by type.

When To Take a Senior Trip?

Senior Trips are traditionally taken in late May or June soon after the graduation ceremony. Some school districts still allow for senior weeks prior to graduation where students have a few days before graduation to travel or stay together. However, these are far less common.

What Are the Criteria for a Good Senior Trip Destination?

All of the places listed here we have traveled to with our own teens. We have also used our “access” to hundreds of teens over the years to talk not only about our travel but places they would love to see and experience. So each of these locations is full of teen-friendly activities.

However, for each location, we have noted if this trip would be possible for a senior-only trip without parents. We are basing our “senior-only”  recommendations on the following criteria: good public transit and hostels.

Good public transit is an extra important criteria in part because teens aren’t old enough to rent a car. While rideshare platforms like Uber and Lyft may also be possible, these platforms also have age restrictions potentially making them unusable by independent travelers who aren’t 18 or older.

Age Consideration for a Senior Trip: Restriction on Accommodations, Cruises and Rideshares

Neither Uber nor Lyft allow passengers under 18 to have an account. Now, let’s be honest, we all know teens under 18 that use rideshares. But if a driver suspects a rider to be under 18, they have the right to require age verification before completing the trip.

Similarly, most overnight accommodations require guests to be 18 or older. In essence, when you are checking into a hotel or a hostel you are signing a contract. And you must have legal status to make that contract valid.

Therefore, if your child is 17 when they graduate and wants to go on a friend-only senior trip, there will need to be a minimum of one person over 18 who is doing all the accommodation booking, Lyft calling, and hotel or hostel registration. Which means that that person assumes responsibility. Yikes. Definitely, something to consider if your kid is the sole 18-year-old.

Additionally, some places that are perceived as more party places — think Spring Break hotspots – will actually require that guests be at least 21. So, if your graduate is thinking of heading to Cabo, they probably won’t be able to find a hotel to let them stay there.

Cruises are also out for friend-only graduation trips as cruise lines require passengers traveling alone to be over 21.

Finally, and most importantly, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), minors may be able to travel without their parents internationally.  Although  “They may, however, require a notarized written consent letter from both parents.”

Moreover, CBP recommends that “Minors interested in traveling without their parents should contact the embassy [of the country they wish to visit] to address admissibility questions.”

What Type of Travel is Typical for Senior Trips?

While senior trips were traditionally beach vacations (think Spring Break), seniors and their families today are branching out and traveling in different ways to celebrate this important milestone. So for the most part, we have left the beaches off this list.

Unforgettable Senior Trip Ideas

Grad nights: the ultimate graduation trip idea.

Both Disneyland and Six Flags have Grad Nights. These nights are absolutely tailored to your graduate. I mean they are called “Grad Night.”

However, with both programs, your child’s school must register for the event. Tickets are purchased from the school so that the parks can verify that the event is only for high school grads. Graduates who are interested in this option should get their schools on board early as school spots, especially for Disneyland, sell out in the early fall.

But if your school was one of those lucky enough to book either a Disneyland or Six Flags Grad Night, let’s get into it.

Disneyland Grad Nights

Although Walt Disney World ditched its Grad Nights way back in 2012, Disneyland still offers these popular nights where grads take over the park. While mostly frequented by local graduates, schools from all over the US can organize Disneyland Grad Night trips.

Offered on 15 nights throughout May and June, Disneyland Grad Nigh ts have 3 different ticket types. The least expensive ticket, which is around $100 per person per night, gets grads into an after-hours party at California Adventure.

If your grads want full-day access to California Adventure, plus the after-hours party, ticket prices go up to around $130. Add a hopper ticket to Disneyland and the tickets shoot up to over $200.

But can the magic of Disney really have a price? Oh wait, it does. But, while the tickets for this night are locked in, there are still ways to plan a trip to Disneyland on a budget , including taking the c heapest way to get from LAX to Disneyland .

Six Flags Grad Night

six flags grad night as a great senior trip idea

Not to be outdone, Six Flags locations also offer an after-hours Grad Night. At the Six Flags party, the park is only open to those students and chaperones with a grad night ticket.

Grads can enjoy thrilling rides, DJs and dance floors throughout the park, and yummy food. However, unlike Disneyland with its dozens of nights, Six Flag locations have 1 or 2 nights in either May or June dedicated to this event.

Tickets vary based on the Six Flags location. And grads with a Six Flags pass still need to buy a special event ticket.

So What If My School Didn’t Book a Grad Night Experience?

Of course, senior trips to both of these parks and to others can certainly happen outside of these special nights. Although these nights are tailored to graduates, any night in Disneyland is….well, magical.

Graduation Trip Ideas in the United States

Even if the United States is home, there is still so much to see and do to make a special graduate trip in the country. From the beaches of Los Angeles to the stages of Broadway, a US trip is a great way to start your graduate on their next American dream.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles is perfect if your graduate is a fan of beaches, movie stars, and of course….Disney. If Disneyland is your destination, these are the best parks for teens.

Otherwise, with beaches, sunshine, and great eats, there is truly so much more to Los Angeles than the Magical Kingdom.

If your graduate is thinking of a friend-only trip to L.A., a few words to the wise.

While we use public transit whenever we are in Los Angeles, families are justified to be a bit leery of sending their new graduate to L.A. on a friend-only trip. L.A. is after all a very car-heavy city.

So, for the graduate who is dreaming of some friend-only time in the California sun, we definitely recommend Venice Beach. A short ride share from LAX, graduates can enjoy bike riding on the beach or people-watching at the skatepark. Venice Beach also has some great hostels . And once you get there, a bike is all your graduate needs to get around.

Long Beach is also a great California beach town with lots to see and do with teenagers .

bike riding in Venice Beach is a great senior trip idea

While senior trips are traditionally taken in May or June, we can’t help but put an early senior trip recommendation on the list.

While Denver is one of our favorite US cities year-round, a ski trip to really lean into that senioritis during your graduate’s last Spring Break is also a great idea.

With its proximity to the mountains, Denver has numerous ski resorts within 60 miles of the city. Never skied before, check out our list of the best ski resorts in Colorado for beginners .

While we definitely recommend a family trip to the mountains to celebrate the impending milestone, a ski trip to Colorado is also possible for a friend-only trip.

Breckenridge is the best resort for a friend-only ski trip as it has the Bivvi hostel . And graduates can book a shuttle directly from Denver International Airport to Breckenridge.

If skiing is not your think don’t worry. The city of Denver has so many things to do with teens .

In the heart of downtown Denver is Elitch Gardens, a popular amusement park. You can also see a baseball game, take in a concert at Red Rocks, or a day trip to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Denver, Colorado truly has something for everyone.

What graduate wouldn’t want to celebrate their achievements in the Big Apple? With great entertainment, great food, and a beautiful skyline, New York is an exciting place to celebrate the achievements of your graduates.

And of all the U.S. cities, New York is one of the easiest to navigate using public transit. And for that reason, New York is also a great location for a friend-only senior trip.

Of course, hotels in Manhattan are known for their high prices. But if your graduate is open to dorm-style accommodations, the city can be theirs for around $60 a night.

If island time is your graduate’s idea of a dream trip, we definitely recommend Kauai. With its rugged landscape and opportunities for adventures, Kauai is a perfect place to unwind after the busy weeks leading up to graduation.

Even a short 3 days in Kauai is an excellent graduation trip.

A trip to Kauai should involve two things, bike riding and kayaking the Wailua River to Secret Falls. And we can help you with both.

Two Bikes Near a Fence in Kauai

But we definitely do not recommend Kauai for a friend-only trip. While there is public transit on the island, a car is really necessary to get around the island.

One of our best tips for traveling with teens is to include adventure and Alaska has that covered.

The wild open spaces of Alaska are a monumental place to welcome this new phase in a graduate’s life. From the bears of Denali National Park to the whales of Seward, Alaska is definitely a must-see for any nature-loving graduate.

Our 10-day itinerary takes you from Fairbanks to Denali down to Seward and then to Anchorage. Our trip was all done by public transit so the trip could be replicated on a friend-only trip.

Alaska is also an excellent trip with family with so many things to do that everyone will enjoy.

And while HostelWorld, which is the platform we use to book hostels, only has listings in Fairbanks and Anchorage . There are several independent hostels in Seward and Denali, the two other stops on our itinerary.

seeing the glaciers of alaska is a great senior trip idea

Graduation Trip Ideas in Central and South America

With the exception of Mexico City and Peru, several of these locations are perfect for your beach-loving graduates.

We love traveling in Central and South America not only because it is much more budget-friendly than Europe. But also because it allows us to expand our knowledge of diverse cultures.

Be aware that the ideal time to travel to Central and South America is really December-April. By May and June, many of these locations may be getting pretty hot as you are going during the dry season.

Mexico City

We love Mexico City. It is truly one of our favorite cities in Central and South America and has so many things for teens to experience.

With amazing street food, charming neighborhoods, and the most museums per capita of any city in the world, Mexico City is a truly remarkable place to spend 3-4 days .

While Mexico City is a megalopolis, as long as you and your graduate are smart travelers, Mexico City is safe. If you have concerns, pay special attention to the Mexico City neighborhood where you and/or your graduate stays.

We love the Historic Center, but others prefer La Condesa or Roma. And with numerous hostels and a great public transit system, Mexico City is also a good option for a friend-only trip.

Easily accessible from the United States and English speaking, Belize is an easy first international trip for US travelers. And for those who are looking for a warm vacation will be rewarded with coral reefs, delicious pupusas, and days and days of sun.

If you are making your way to the islands and are on a budget or want to travel more sustainably, we definitely recommend taking the water taxi over a flight .

Not only does the water taxi offer significant savings, you have an opportunity to travel with the locals. And who knows, a dolphin might decide to befriend your boat as one did with ours.

For your animal-loving graduate who doesn’t necessarily love the cold of Alaska, Costa Rica is an excellent choice.

One of the most biodiverse countries in the world, Costa Rica is the perfect place to shake off the stress of the past few months and live life “Pura Vida” with your newly graduated teenager.

We lived in Costa Rica and travel back often with our own son so we know there are so many things to do with teenagers.

The two coastlines of Costa Rica are so different, we recommend traveling to both. But if you don’t have as much time as we do in our 10-day Costa Rican itinerary, then we definitely recommend the Caribbean side.

Be aware that the drinking age in Costa Rica , and most of Central and South America, is 18 years old. You will definitely want to negotiate with your senior if you have concerns about most seniors ability to legally drink in the country.

One of our most unforgettable trips in all of our years of traveling together as a family has been our time in Peru. While we definitely don’t recommend this trip as a friend-only experience given the more complex travel moves, we can not say enough about how important this trip has been to us.

Whether you go as long as we did on our 3-week Pervian itinerary or just focus on Cusco and Machu Picchu, we promise that your time in Peru will be an amazing send-off to your graduate.

Graduation Trip Ideas in Europe

We have taken our own teen to Europe numerous times, and certainly recommend so much of the continent to you.

With its excellent public transit system, amazing food, and noteworthy sites, any graduate would be thrilled to mark their achievement in Europe.

Europe’s extensive public transit makes Europe a very viable friend-only trip.

But please note that June starts the high season in Europe so if you are planning a traditional senior trip in May or June, earlier is definitely better.

Bike in front of the Spanish Steps

We love Italy for a trip with teenagers. With its iconic architecture, renowned sites, and delicious gelato, there is so much here to experience. We have a 7-day Italy itinerary with teens that is perfect for a senior trip.  The entire trip is taken on high-speed trains, so our itinerary could also work for a friend-only trip.

Regardless of where in Italy you travel, we definitely think Rome should be at the center of your time in Italy. Rome has s o many experiences for teenagers .

Like the other European cities on this list, Rome has great hostels and public transit making it especially great for a friend-only trip.

It is also hard to imagine going to Italy without seeing Venice with your graduate . Venice gets busy in the summer. If your child’s graduation is at the end of May, we recommend leaving ASAP and starting your trip in Venice to skirt the crowds as much as possible.

Paris is a wonderful senior trip either as a family experience or a friend-only trip.

With numerous high-quality hostels in Paris and extremely comprehensive public transit throughout the city and countryside, the City of Lights is a smart choice for graduates to explore on their own.

While June starts the high season in Paris, there are still ways for families on a budget to experience the city.

And since your goal for a trip to Paris will be to immerse your graduate in all the art, architecture, and culture, we definitely recommend the Paris Pass as a way to save money while taking in all the sites.

Scandinavia

Some of the best European cities are found in the Scandinavian countries, including our favorite of Copenhagen, Denmark. Scandinavia’s family-friendly culture (and its love of our favorite mode of transit, the bike) make it an uplifting place to have one more family holiday before your graduate leaves home.

In addition to Denmark and Sweden, our Scandinavian itinerary includes a stopover in Iceland through Icelandic Airlines’ free stopover program.  Iceland has grown in great popularity over the last few years.

While we have loved our time in Iceland, most tourists need a car to see this island nation. While one can also see the country through bus tours, this dependence of cars to see the ring of the island makes it a less good friend-only trip.

Spain is truly one of our favorite countries. There are so many great things to do in Spain with teenagers , making the country perfect for a senior trip.

From its vibrant city of Madrid to the architectural wonder that is Barcelona, your senior will love the food, culture, and overall vibe that is Spain.

The city of Madrid is a great senior trip idea

Madrid is definitely the easiest city to base out of in Spain. The city itself has so much to see and do for teenagers .

We have loved and explored so many European cities with our teen, from Antwerp to Lucerne , but Madrid is still top of our list because of its location, culture and relative affordability.

In Madrid there are cultured experiences at the world-famous art museum, The Prado, and more teenager-focused experiences like the amusement park, Parque de Atracciones.

Our 4-day Madrid itinerary will help you plan your time.

However, one of the great advantages of Madrid is its high-speed trains. Whether it is the medieval city of Toledo or the seaside city of Barcelona, all of Spain can be easily accessed by train from Madrid.

In Madrid city center, there is also a unique Art Seven Hostel Capsules , where your senior can rent their own capsule to sleep. Yep, you heard it right…a capsule. Making Madrid specifically a great place in Spain for a first-timer trip with friends.

If you do choose Spain or most other European countries, be aware that the legal drinking age is 18 . In Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, and Belgium the drinking age is lower.

Budget Senior Trip Ideas

Out here in the West, a weekend camping trip is the way our own senior students celebrate their graduation as a class.

Camping is the perfect senior trip in that it allows students to use their own transportation and no accommodations are needed beyond that old, trusty, nylon tent.

And is there a better place to say your goodbyes, then out under the stars with a fire roaring and that one talented friend playing away on her acoustic guitar?

While everyone loves to spend a night away, day trips are another great budget choice for seniors to celebrate with friends.

In our town of Boise, Idaho, graduating classes can drive a few hours to 470 foot sand dunes at Bruneau State Park or head to Lucky Peak Reservoir to spend the day at the lake.

A great day trip is less than a 2 hour drive, but has a different feel than the everyday. For coastal places, a day trip could be an all-class trip to the ocean. For those in the West, it could be a day in a National Park.

Staycations

It really isn’t about the distance, but the memories. And staycations are a great chance to organize a trip to make some final memories. Some of our graduating classes senior staycations have included:

  • Indoor Laser Tag
  • The Area Zoo
  • Miniature Golf

This list is also great for “senior skip day,” but don’t tell anyone that this teacher promoted that tradition.

A senior trip is a great way to celebrate this important milestone in your child’s life. Whether it is a friends-only trip or a family affair, making memories through travel is always, always a good idea.

Need other ideas for best travel gifts for teenagers . We have 60+ ideas for every type of teen.

Should I take a senior trip with friends if I am 17?

There are many travel restrictions for minors, including booking a hotel and using a rideshare. Traveling without your parents once you turn 18 eases many of those restrictions.

Minors who want to plan a senior trip might consider traveling locally.

Are senior trips only with friends?

While senior trips are traditionally thought to be trips or events for graduates and their peers, more and more families are taking senior trips with their graduates to commemorate the event.

Need reasons to plan a trip with your gang? Here is why senior trips are absolutely crucial

There is only so much time left before high schoolers leave. And the best way to depart is with a handful of memories of the beautiful journey of school life. Through trips, a whole lot of fun and experiences await high schoolers, which are mentioned below:

  • Discovering Hidden Talents: Trips can provide a unique opportunity for students to try new activities and explore their interests in a fun and low-pressure environment. This can help students discover hidden talents and passions that they may not have otherwise known about. For example, a student who has never tried rock climbing may discover a love for it during a school trip to a climbing gym.
  • Breaking Monotony: High school can be a monotonous experience for many students, with the same daily routine of classes and homework. Trips offer a welcome break from this routine and provide students with the opportunity to engage in new and unusual experiences. This can help reignite students’ sense of excitement and wonder, making them feel more refreshed and motivated upon their return to school.
  • Confronting Fears: Trips can be a great opportunity for students to push their comfort zones and confront their fears. For example, a student who is afraid of trying new foods may be more willing to try something unusual while on a trip with their classmates. This can help students build confidence and resilience, and become more comfortable with taking risks and stepping out of their comfort zones.
  • Building Connections: Trips can provide an informal and relaxed environment for students to interact with their peers and teachers. This can lead to stronger relationships and a greater sense of community within the school. Additionally, shared experiences on trips can create memories and bonds that last a lifetime.
  • Amusing Stories: Lastly, trips can be a source of unique and amusing stories to share with friends and family for years to come. These memories can serve as a source of laughter and reminiscing and provide a fun and quirky perspective on the student’s high school experience. Furthermore, this can be a great show-and-tell activity for high schoolers too.

In conclusion, high school trips are a fantastic opportunity to break away from the routine and embrace the quirky. From visiting historical landmarks to trying new foods to experiencing new cultures, these trips provide an escape from the ordinary and an invitation to see the world in a whole new light. Digging into the fun quotes for senior students , advice by some learned individuals would be that don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and embrace the unexpected because the quirky memories you create on these trips will stay with you forever. So go forth, have fun, and never stop exploring the quirky side of life!
