Gamelan is the traditional musical ensembles of Indonesia, typically from the islands of Bali or Java. The ensembles features a variety of instruments such as sets of tuned bronze gongs, gong-chimes, metallophones, drums, bamboo flutes, bowed and plucked string instruments. A gamelan orchestra can sometimes include singers.  Gamelan music, weather played live or the recorded version, usually accompanies important events such as weddings, rituals and ceremonies, traditional dance and wayang performances.

Gamelan comprises two scales; the slendro (minor) and pelog (major). Each instrument has its functions. Gongs maintain the basic structure of the music; the metallophones carry the theme, while the kendang leads the orchestra by controlling the tempo of the musical piece.

Javanese Gamelan

There are generally three distinct types of gamelan , the Javanese, Balinese and Sundanese styles, each with its own distinctive musical scale, dynamics and mood. In Central Java, the gamelan is an essential element in many kraton (palace) ceremonies. In Bali, almost all religious rituals are accompanied by the gamelan .

Gamelan Bali

Balinese Gamelan

Certain pieces of the ensemble are believed to possess supernatural powers and would be played to ward off evil spirits or even manipulate the weather. Such special pieces are given titles and treated with utmost respect.

Javanese gamelan for beginners: unraveling the secrets of an exquisite form.

Javanese gamelan orchestra

Few laypeople outside of Indonesia are familiar with gamelan music, Indonesia’s gorgeous bronze gong ensembles. It’s a different story for serious musicians and ethnomusicologists from around the globe. These specialists consider the nation’s many gamelan traditions (Javanese, Balinese, Sundanese and others) to be among the richest, most intriguing music in the world. Javanese gamelan in particular has fueled much study – not to mention fierce passions. It’s not uncommon to hear stories about Western musicians who discover the compelling world of Javanese gamelan music. Many virtually renounce their past musical endeavors and entirely devote themselves to the study of this exotic art form.

If Javanese gamelan music is so irresistible, why isn’t it more popular, among both everyday Indonesians and the foreigners who visit Indonesia? I won’t presume to speak for Indonesians, other than to note that gamelan is a classical, perhaps “old-fashioned” tradition. It has much competition from other forms of music from Indonesia and elsewhere.

The basic instruments of the gamelan, like this saron peking, are easy to start playing.

gamelan tour jakarta

But for foreigners, the dismaying reality is that on first listening, a sophisticated gamelan piece – the sort you are likely to hear at a palace performance in Central Java, where many non-Indonesians get their first and only exposure to the repertoire – can be downright unpleasant: scratchy string playing, nasal singing, seemingly out-of-tune melodies. Just as a poem in French might sound superb to a speaker of the language, but like annoying gibberish if you don’t speak French, most people need some understanding of what they are hearing before they can appreciate the complex interplay of instruments.

That doesn’t mean gamelan has to be out of reach for novices, though. You can enjoy the French poem if someone takes the time to explain it. Likewise, if you have musical inclinations and are curious to expand your horizons, you can begin to appreciate gamelan.

Many people begin their gamelan studies in college, but there is no need to enroll at a university to start learning. All it takes to begin playing the simplest forms is a set of instruments, a patient instructor, and a few friends to join in. (Gamelan music is never a solo art form; it always depends on the interactions of various musicians.) Despite being exceptionally difficult to master at more advanced levels, Javanese gamelan is surprisingly simple to start learning.  You can contribute to an ensemble without studying the difficult parts.

Where to start?

Pagoyuban Retnobudaya playing for the 30th anniversary celebration of The Jakarta Post.

gamelan tour jakarta

The challenge is finding that gamelan set,  instructor, and friends. But if you are in Jakarta and your schedule and location make it possible to visit Jl. Duren Tiga on Sunday mornings, you’re might want to give Samurti Andaru Laras a try. This group usually communicates in Indonesian, but many members speak English and they are welcoming to new people.

If you have ever been an amateur musician, or just a music aficionado, it group is well worth giving this a try. Sitting surrounded by the majestic gongs and playing the music yourself, even as a complete beginner, is a much different experience than listening from outside. And the underlying assumptions of gamelan are so different from those of Western music that it will delightfully expand your ideas about what music is. Who knows – maybe you will discover that you too have a fierce passion for gamelan music.

Want to hear some basic music? Here’s a recent video of Paguyuban Retnobudaya (a beginners’ group the author managed while living in Indonesia) playing a beginner’s piece:

Unveiling the Sacredness of Gamelan: A Glimpse into Javanese Rituals

Unveiling the Sacredness of Gamelan A Glimpse into Javanese Rituals

javaprivatetour.com – Gamelan, an ensemble of metallophones, has long been a source of cultural and spiritual significance in Java. Transcending its role as a mere musical instrument, gamelan is steeped in sacredness, revered by many Javanese people.

Ancient Origins and Cultural Evolution

The exact origins of gamelan remain shrouded in mystery, but its presence in Nusantara dates back centuries. Renowned Dutch philologist Jan Laurens Andries Brandes recognized gamelan as one of ten indigenous Indonesian cultural expressions.

Carvings on the 9th century Borobudur Temple depict gamelan instruments, showcasing its deep integration into Javanese society since ancient times. Over the centuries, gamelan has been influenced by diverse cultures, such as European and Arabic, leading to its present-day multifaceted form.

Gamelan Instrument

Reverence and Rituals

Despite these foreign influences, a sense of reverence towards gamelan persists among certain Javanese communities. Before performances, elaborate rituals are often performed to honor the instruments.

Seeking Permission and Protection

Engraving a deep sense of respect, gamelan players, known as pengrawit, encircle the instruments, clasp their hands in front of their chest, and bow respectfully. They then proceed to walk around the gamelan in a crouching position. Burning incense wafts through the air, accompanied by scattered flower petals, as a symbolic offering.

Gamelan as a Sacred Entity

The Javanese, particularly those associated with the royal courts, view gamelan as sacred entities, harboring benevolent spirits that coexist with humans. This belief necessitates respectful treatment of the instruments, reflected in the rituals and behaviors surrounding gamelan.

Cautionary Tales and Anecdotes

KRT Purwodiningrat from KHP Widya Budaya, the cultural institution of Yogyakarta’s Keraton, recounts an incident involving a woman disrespectfully posing for photos in front of a gamelan. Inexplicably, she flipped upside down, her head touching the ground while her skirt remained upright.

Such occurrences serve as cautionary tales, reinforcing the importance of observing proper etiquette when interacting with gamelan.

Javanese Gamelan Performance

A Medium for Prayer and Spiritual Connection

The sacredness of gamelan extends to its role in religious and spiritual rituals. Certain gending (musical compositions) and their lyrics are specifically used as prayers to the Almighty.

Transcending to a Higher Plane

The rhythmic and repetitive melodies of gamelan are believed to induce a state of deep meditation, allowing the players to enter the alpha brainwave frequency. In this state, they believe they can transcend to another dimension and establish a more direct connection with God.

Rituals at the Keraton

At the Keraton Surakarta, abdi dalem (palace attendants) regularly engage in semadi (meditation) accompanied by gamelan on Tuesday and Friday Kliwon nights.

Adapting to Modern Times

While the sacredness of gamelan remains significant, its observance has evolved over time. Nowadays, rituals are not always performed, and their inclusion depends on the client’s preference and willingness to pay an additional fee.

By Unit Pengelola Museum Seni

Unit Pengelola Museum Seni

The Museum Wayang is a museum dedicated to Javanese wayang puppetry, located in Jakarta and facing among other museums the Fatahillah Square

Wayang is a Javanese word used for a theatrical performance with puppets or human dancers. Performances of shadow puppet theatre are accompanied by a gamelan orchestra in Java.

The museum has a collection of various kinds of wayang and displays various collections of wayang and dolls from Malaysia, Thailand, China, Vietnam, France or India.

The Wayang kulit, or shadow puppets, are the most famous of the Indonesian wayang. Kulit means skin, and it refers to the leather construction of the puppets.

UNESCO designated wayang kulit, as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity on the 7th of November in 2003, requiring Indonesians to preserve their heritage.

don't forget that there is always a Gamelan playing in the old lobby of the Istana Hotel. you will hear more than a few songs over a cup of hot brew at the lobby bar.

go up and speak to the performers. They are always willing to play, have heir photo taken, or even let you hit a few gongs with them if you like.

Have a great time.

Please address your question to the respective forums: Bali and Lombok.

Wrong forum.

The very quick answer is that tradtional gamelan music and art performances are very very common in Bali, both in commercial venues and in temples as part of Hindu rituals.

Javanese gamelan and dance are very different from Balinese, btw. so you could watch both "styles" and see and hear totally different things. (in other words, it's good to do BOTH)

Indonesian gamelan masters tour UK universities

gamelan maestro from the Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI) Surakarta, Prasadiyanto, is in Glasgow, Scotland, to share knowledge and skills about the traditional Indonesian instrument with students, academics and other communities.

It is part of the “Gamelan artist-in-residence” program organized by the Indonesian Embassy in London and the Education and Culture Ministry.

“The program is aimed at promoting Indonesian culture in the UK,” said education and cultural attaché E. Aminudin Aziz in a press release made available to The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

Prasadiyanto’s presence at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) in Glasgow, one of the world’s best art universities, was met with an enthusiastic reception.

Aminudin said Prasadiyanto would be in Scotland for three months to teach gamelan at the RCS. He will also help organize a gamelan concert on June16 and a gamelan composition during the screening of “ Setan Jawa ” (Javanese Devil), a silent movie by noted director Garin Nugroho.

Several other gamelan instructors will be in the UK to teach gamelan at universities across the country.

There are approximately 150 gamelan sets in the UK.

One notable gamelan group in Scotland is Gamelan Naga Mas. Led by RCS teacher and composer J. Simon van der Walt, Gamelan Naga Mas has existed since 1990.

“The unique thing about gamelan is that it has to be played together. There is no soloist. We all have to play together to create the music,” Van der Walt said ahead of a concert in Glasgow last year.

In Bali, there is a fundamental integration of the performing arts into daily social and religious activities. No celebration or gathering is complete without music and dance.

A variety of materials are used in the production of instruments. Most gamelans consist of bronze keys in carved wooden frames suspended over bamboo resonator, together with a number of bronze gongs, drums, cymbals, flutes and an assortment of smaller percussion instruments. But there are bamboo gamelan ensembles as well – entire orchestra composed of bamboo marimbas or flutes. All gamelan instruments are believed to contain a spiritual power which must be respected with proper offerings and rituals.

There are three types of gamelan. The most impressive of these is the gamelan jegog, found exclusively in the western of Jembrana. In jegog ensembles, the largest brass instrument from bamboo (diameter = 12 inches ; length = 10 feet). It can produce low tones of incredible purity and depth that can often be heard for miles around. The gamelan selunding is a rare and sacred ensemble, some selunding melodies are considered extremely sacred, and may not be played except on certain ritual occasions. The most common type of gamelan is the gong kebyar – a bronze orchestra consisting of a number of metallophones , tuned gongs, cymbals, flutes and drums. Now, gamelan available on TikTok music by influencer.

Balinese Music and Dance Class – offers Balinese music and dance classes for students who wish to become fully involved with the music & dance culture of Bali.
