Gladys Knight has revealed she will be returning to the U.K. stage for a final time in 2024 for her “Farewell Tour.”
The legendary ‘Empress of Soul’ – who began her career in the 1950s performing with The Pips and went on to produce an iconic songbook including hits “Help Me Make it Through the Night,” James Bond theme “Licence to Kill” and “The Way We Were” – is launching her shows on June 24 in Glasgow, Scotland. She’ll also play in Birmingham, Swansea, Bournemouth, Nottingham and Southend, along with a date at London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall – the same venue where the star performed two shows last year. Tickets for Knight’s “Farewell Tour” go on general sale on Friday 6 October .
Earlier this year, Knight opened the Hampton Court Palace Festival open-air concert series in London this summer. She also played concerts in Manchester and Dublin.

REVIEW: GLADYS KNIGHT, THE FAREWELL TOUR – HAMER HALL

Review by Bryget Chrisfield
Clocking tonight’s stage set-up – including separate drum and percussion kits bookending two keyboard consoles (to be played by two keyboardists) – we already know the musicianship will be top-tier. And so it should be! We’ve assembled to farewell the Empress Of Soul, Gladys Knight, afterall.
Gladys’ joyous presence is infectious – talk about a million-watt smile! – and her shoulder shimmies delight throughout. She regularly tells us we hit her in the feels (“I feel so loved!”), often while beating her chest with a fist for emphasis.
Sure, Gladys does forget the lyrics a couple of times. But one of her outstanding backup vocalists always reliably picks up where she left off, without missing a single syllable. These badasses typically remain seated for the show’s duration (don’t worry, there’s synchronised arm-ography), although they do rise and sashay forwards a couple of times for maximum impact. The mesmeric Midnight Train To Georgia is further elevated thanks to this BV trio’s The Locomotion-inspired armwork.
Mid-song, Gladys notices a front-row fan with a smartphone held aloft and hams it up, geeing herself up for the impressive power note that follows. Then, staring directly down the lens, she rates her own performance with a chef’s kiss. Licence To Kill is bombastically Bond, as we’d hoped, and I Heard It Through The Grapevine slaps harder than it has any damn right to – cue: funk-activated stank faces and much chair-jiving. A snippet of Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground) even sneaks its way within The Nitty Gritty. Later, Never Give Up by Luther Vandross morphs into Save The Overtime (For Me) – talk about segue goals! Their take on Donnie McClurkin’s gospel classic Stand is a spiritual experience.
While genuinely engaging with her backing band, Gladys dishes out some praise: “I like that!” She also throws up devil’s horns as convincingly as a seasoned rock’n’roller at one point.
“Can it be that it was all so simple then?” – The Way We Were is this evening’s undisputed set highlight, Gladys perched – elegantly, of course – on a high stool and creating new “misty, water-coloured memories” for all assembled. Gladys’ 79 years spent gracing this Earth add so much poignancy to every well-timed pause and knowing chuckle. And a flurry of applause follows her sustained powernote during this one.

The great ones endure and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Very few singers over the last fifty years have matched her unassailable artistry. This true legend of the stage and screen has enjoyed #1 hits in Pop, Gospel, R&B and Adult Contemporary and has triumphed in film, television and live performance.
Beginning her musical career at the age of 4 performing gospel music at Church, to performing alongside her siblings in the music group, Gladys Knight & The Pips, the naturally gifted Gladys was a superstar in the making. Following the success of the group, with an array of chart-topping hits across the 60s, 70s & 80s including ‘Every Beat of My Heart’ ‘Letter Full of Tears’ ‘I Heard it Through the Grapevine’ and ‘If I Were Your Woman’, Gladys went on to have one of the most coveted musical careers in history.
Knight went on to record more than 38 albums over the years, including four solo albums during the past decade: “ Good Woman ” (1991); “ Just for You ” (1994); the inspirational “ Many Different Roads ” (1999); and “ At Last ” (2001). “At Last” showed the world that she still has what it takes to record a hit album, employing the talents of contemporary producers like Randy Jackson, Gary Brown and James D.C. Williams III, Jon John, Jamey Jaz, Keith Thomas, Tom Dowd and Tiger Roberts.
Gladys’ love for the stage still remains strong. Consistently touring across 2022 and 2023, the singer has a huge 2024 ahead, with an array of headline shows already lined up across the US before heading down under in March.
“A career-spanning set from the empress of soul – the star is in outstanding voice as she pours her whole heart into hits ranging from the Motown era to her 1980s Bond theme” – ★★★★ The Guardian
With a musical career spanning multiple decades, Knight has also devoted much of her life to humanitarian and philanthropic endeavours, working with the American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society, the Minority AIDS Project, amFAR and Crisis Intervention, and The Boys and Girls Club. She has been honoured by numerous organisations as well, including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), B’Nai Brith, and is a recent recipient of BET’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
With a legendary status, consistently proving that her stage presence, live performance and artistry never falters, the great Gladys Knight returns to perform a string of unmissable headline shows across Australia and New Zealand in March and April 2024 – a once in a lifetime opportunity for fans of soul music.
