The Scoop: What to Know About EF Go Ahead Tours

Despite its beauty, traveling to Greece presents some unique difficulties for many people. Language obstacles, a distinct alphabet, and numerous attractions scattered across the country in off-the-beaten-path locations can make it a challenge to see the best of Greece on your own. Fortunately, it’s much easier to explore the country with the best Greece tours in 2024. No matter your interests—Greek cuisine, historic sites, culture, religious sites of Ancient Greece, or beaches along the Aegean Sea—there’s a guided tour of Greece that’s just right for you.

2024’s Best Small Group Guided Tours in Greece

One of the biggest perks of small group Greek tours is that you can see all of the modern highlights and ancient ruins without having to plan the activities, meals, accommodations, or transportation on your own. Here are the land-based tours and Greek island cruises I most highly recommend for 2024.

What travelers are saying about our guided trips

Tips for planning tours & travel with us.

Here at Go Ahead, we make it easy to plan a tour. All you have to do is decide which of our travel packages excites you most, and when you’d like to travel. (A springtime escape to  Europe , anyone?) If you can’t decide, we’ll help you narrow down our vacation packages and find the perfect trip.

From there, we’ll take care of the rest. For travelers who book flights with us, our in-house team of travel experts will get to work finding flights with our trusted airline partners. And as you count down to tour, we’ll be busy booking clean, stylish, comfy hotels, planning meals at locally loved restaurants, and securing tickets to top museums, cultural sites, and, if it applies to your tour, special events.

Having our team of travel experts take care of every last logistical detail is one of  10 benefits of a guided tour versus independent travel .

When browsing our 175-plus vacation packages, here are a few things to keep in mind to help you find the just-right tours for travel to the places you’ve been dreaming of visiting.

  • Your travel style.  Are you into wildlife, adventure, or food and wine? Do you want to take a deep dive into a particular destination or religion?  Want to experience a special event, or explore with a small group? We offer escorted tours designed around these  travel styles  and others so that travelers can have the experience that suits them best.
  • Where you want to go.  Whether you’ve long dreamed of exploring America’s national parks, Scotland’s pristine landscapes, or Thailand’s golden temples, you can do it on our guided tours. Some of our itineraries are designed to offer travelers a deeper dive into a single country. Others take travelers to multiple countries in a single trip (think Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, or Portugal, Spain, and Morocco).
  • When you want to go.  Sure, there’s nothing like Paris in the springtime. But maybe seeing the City of Light against a backdrop of fiery fall foliage is more what you have in mind. We’ll make that happen. We offer dozens of departures per tour, and in the case of some trips, we offer departures all year round. And, we make tours available for booking up to two years in advance. Having more time to pay, and more departure dates to choose from, are among the  eight benefits of booking a trip years in advance .
  • Special or seasonal events.  Have you always wanted to see cherry blossoms blooming in Japan? Or sip hot, mulled wine while wandering around a European Christmas market ? Perhaps witnessing the Great Migration is at the top of your travel wish list. Events like these, and others, only happen during certain times of year, so be sure to check out tour packages for travel that occur at the same time.
  • Duration.  Our tours range from six days to 22 days. Want to enjoy a quick break? Consider our shorter tours, which we offer in destinations such as Iceland, Spain, and Amsterdam. Have more time to spare? A 10-day trip to Scandinavia , or a 22-day tour of Australia and New Zealand , could be just the ticket.
  • Who you want to travel with.  Many of our group trips are designed for groups of 15 to 38 travelers. (Think: more opportunities to make new friends.) If you prefer a more intimate experience, consider one of our Small Group Tours, which are designed for groups of 10 to 22 travelers. Want to explore solely with your friends or family? We happily craft Private Tours and Customized Tours for groups of seven travelers or more.

For help narrowing our trips down to the perfect tour, try our  Tour Match Quiz  →

Our trips are bookable directly through our website. (Putting $99 down with AutoPay , our interest-free payment plan, is all it takes to secure your spot on tour.) If you have questions or can’t decide which tour is right for you, you can call us at 1-800-590-1161 . We’re here to help.

We offer more than 175 tour packages. They include:

  • Guided group tours.  These trips are designed for groups of 15 to 38 travelers and include Multi-Country Tours , single-country tours, and City Stay Tours , which give travelers an opportunity to explore a particular city in depth.
  • Small Group Tours.  A more intimate tour experience with a group size of just 10 to 22 travelers. Small group travel styles include Food & Wine Tours, Adventure Tours, and Safari & Wildlife Tours.
  • Special Event Tours.  Typically capped at 35 or 38 travelers, these trips are designed to capture the magic of special and/or seasonal events, such as Oktoberfest, Oberammergau, New Year’s Eve, St. Patrick’s Day, Sakura (cherry blossom) season, fall foliage, Christmas markets of Europe, Halloween, and more. Find the perfect tour for you by browsing our Special Event tours .
  • Private and Customized Tours.  Have a particular interest you want to explore? We happily plan Private and Customized Tours for groups of seven or more travelers.

Map for the Greeks to Greece tour

Board your overnight flight to Athens, the cradle of Western Civilization and one of the oldest cities in the world. Pro tip: if you’re looking to earn some bonus points with the locals upon arrival, make sure you refer to Greece by its real name: Hellas.

Welcome to Athens! This city is at least 5,000 years old, but hardly looks a day over 25 (when you look past the historic structures and ancient statues). What we’re trying to say is, Athens is a beautiful city filled with art, literature, history, and about a million Instagram-worthy spots. And it’s the first stop on your journey through the Greek Islands.

In the evening, enjoy a Welcome Dinner of local cuisine and drinks with fellow travelers at an authentic local spot. Afterwards, you’re free to take the party elsewhere!

Today's highlights:

  • Meet an EF representative at the airport
  • Transfer to your accommodation and check in
  • Receive the latest schedule from your Tour Director
  • Meet your fellow travelers as they arrive
  • Get acquainted with Athens on a brief walk around the city with your Tour Director.

The remains of some historically significant and crazy old structures still stand in this ancient citadel, including the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena Nike. So yeah, it’s kind of a big deal. The rest of the day is yours to explore Athens.

  • Step back in time in the historic Acropolis of Athens with your local guide.
  • See the Propylaea, the Theatre of Dionysus, and a bunch of other structures you’ll need your guide’s help to pronounce.
  • Take in incredible panoramic views of Athens from the citadel’s hilltop vantage point, and understand why the ancient city’s name translates to “high city”.

Free time suggestions

Fill Up: Sample ouzo, the local anise-flavored aperitif, at an authentic Greek restaurant, locally known as a taverna. Dig It: The National Archaeology Museum is considered one of the greatest museums in the world, with pieces ranging from Greek sculptures to Egyptian Antiquities. Mama Mia! That’s quite a collection.

After you’ve taken in the sites of ancient Athens, head to Piraeus Port to board your overnight ferry bound for Chania, Crete.

Chania is one of Crete’s most picturesque coastal cities, with a maze of narrow streets and family-owned shops. Take today to explore the area on your own.

In the evening, head back to the harbor for dinner along the water and a night out on the town. Many of Chania’s tavernas feature live music.

  • Spend the day in Old Port on your own.
  • Admire the unique architecture of Chania, a mix of Venetian and Turkish styles
  • Learn about Chania’s role in history and its Minoan, Ottoman, Venetian, Byzantine and Greek influences

Get Crafty: Visit Tabakaria, the leather district, for well-priced, handmade leather goods Beachy Keen: Lounge at the beach, enjoying the soft sand and sparkling water (round-trip transportation included).

Join your Tour Director and head to Falassarna, a mile-long golden sand beach outside of Chania, or take a free day to explore.

Return to Chania in the evening for one last night before heading to Heraklion.

  • Drive to Falassarna, complete with amazing ocean and mountain vistas
  • Rent an umbrella, grab a fruity drink and relax in style

Enjoy a scenic drive through olive groves and mountainous terrain from Chania to Heraklion. The Old Town is known for its massive stone fortifications, astounding Venetian and Turkish fountains and urban sophistication.

  • Board your private coach en route to modern, urban Heraklion, capital of Crete
  • Arrive and check in to your accommodation
  • Get to know the area with your Tour Director

That's Bull: Visit the Palace of Knossos, the setting of the myth of the Minotaur, just three miles outside of Heraklion Eat Up: Heraklion is home to one of Greece’s most thriving cafe and restaurant scenes Stock Up: The best shopping in the Greek Islands is in Heraklion’s Old Port

You’re headed to Santorini, one of the most iconic Greek Islands, complete with whitewashed and blue-domed buildings, romantic beaches, and endless sunshine. Think you know your adult grape juice? Join an optional Cliffside wine tasting excursion.

  • Hop aboard a short ferry ride bound for Santorini
  • Arrive and check in to your accommodation.
  • Get to know the picturesque island that you’ll be calling home for the next two nights.
  • Sprint to the nearest beach and enjoy a Santorini sunset.

Sun Down: Oia is the traditional village in the northwestern end of Santorini and best known for its blue-domed churched, windmills and winding streets that pop up in everyone’s Instagram feeds. And for good reason. Head there before sunset for awe-inspiring sunset views and get ready to capture some likes…errr, photos. Life's a Beach: Visit one of Santorini’s top beaches for an evening swim—from Perivolos to Kamari to Ammoudi Bay—there are tons to choose from and you literally can’t go wrong.

Quaint villages, wine, and a breathtaking sunset—it doesn’t get more Greek than this. Why wait? Save money by booking this optional excursion before your trip departs.

Keep the good times and island vibes rolling with a free day in Santorini, and take in all the romantic views and olives you can handle. Get your heart rate up with a hike from Fira to Oia, or curl up on a beach towel and work on your tan. Word of advice: don’t fall asleep with a gyro on your lap. It will result in a bizarre and hunger-inducing tan line.

  • Head back to your favorite beach from yesterday, or go on the hunt for a new spot.
  • Wind your way along the paths of Imerovigli. When it comes to sunsets, this village is known as the “balcony to the Aegean.”
  • Enjoy dinner with a view at cliffside cafes and restaurants. Bonus points if your view includes the caldera.

Museum On: Get your history on at a few of the island’s museums. The Archaeological Museum of Thera and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera are home to well-preserved artifacts and fossils dating back to 17th century BC. Skary Stories: Take a trail to Skaros Rock, an outcropping of rock that juts out over the Aegean Sea. This is the perfect place to get some scenic views (and sweaty palms, if you get too close to the edge).

Next stop, Ios! This hilly island in the Cyclades is known for all-day parties, sandy beaches so soft they’ll have you ditching your shoes permanently, and nightlife that stretches into early morning. This is the place to party, relax, and repeat.

  • Blow a farewell kiss to Santorini and board your ferry to Ios.
  • Arrive and check in to your accommodations.
  • Join your Tour Director on a walking tour of the area and get a feel for the island living.
  • Spend the rest of the day exploring on your own, then get the party started with the island’s famous nightlife.

Beach It: Head to Mylopotas Beach, located near the island’s main village of Chora, for a day of sunbathing, or hit the water for windsurfing, snorkeling, and Marco Polo-ing. Prepare to get your socks knocked off—this is the most visited beach in Ios…not that you should be wearing socks at the beach anyways. Take a Hike: Head into the cliff-top villages of Ios and catch a glimpse of the iconic windmills. Then, feel on top of the world after hiking up to Pyrgos, the island’s highest point, and take in some serious views.

Enjoy a free day to explore Ios on your own. By now, you probably already understand why the nightlife on this island is so famous, but Ios is more than just a party destination—it’s full of history, tradition, and activity. Spend the day wandering around island villages, going for a hike, or just relaxing under blue skies on one of the island’s pristine beaches. Bring a bottle of wine, a book, and your personal playlist—you’re in paradise.

  • Make your way to the beach for more splashing, sunshine, and sand between your toes, and love that this is now part of your daily routine.
  • Head to the harbor to devour fresh seafood and ocean views.
  • Snap a picture at the Panayia Gremiotissa bell tower, one of the most photographed spots on the island.
  • Dance the night away in the Greek Islands’ most famous party scene.

Don’t ruin it: Explore Paleokastro (translation: old castle) and discover the ancient ruins that have been standing on a cliff’s edge overlooking the Aegean Sea since 1397 AD. Dig it: Ios is more than just a pretty face. Soak in some of the island’s ancient history at the Archeological Museum.

Speedboat & Shipwreck Snorkel (extra cost)

Hop on your speed boat, grab a snorkel, and swim amongst a shipwreck. Then, voyage into secret caves in the coast of Ios, relax on our favorite isolated beaches and hidden lagoons, and munch on a light lunch. This excursion is  pre-book  only; if your trip is less than five days away, please call 800-766-2645 to purchase.

You can never have too much free time in paradise. Spend the day revisiting your favorite sunbathing spot, exploring new hiking paths, or snorkeling with some fish friends.

  • Take a break from the nonstop parties on Manganari beach, a secluded spot perfect for a peaceful afternoon under the sun.
  • Trek over to Skarkos Hill for a look at the island’s largest archaeological excavation site, and get a peek into ancient civilization.
  • Stay out till the break of dawn (and then stay out a little longer) to end your last night in Ios the right way.

Shop ‘til you drop: Spend some time shopping in Chora, the island’s main village. This classic Greek village offers incredible views and has endless alleys and side streets to explore. ***Go Homer:***Pay homage to one of the greatest poet’s in Greek history during a hike in the northernmost part of the island to Homer’s Tomb. If you ever read Odyssey or Iliad in high school, you know who to thank.

Athens felt neglected, so it’s a good thing you’re heading back to pay it another visit. End the trip with a bang in a city known for stunning views and world-class nightlife. By now, you’re an old pro when it comes to exploring Greece, so we’re giving you the day to adventure in Athens on your own before an included farewell dinner with the group.

  • Take a ferry from Ios to Athens, and greet the ancient city like a really, really old friend.
  • Revisit some favorite spots from day one in Athens, or go on a hunt to find new hidden gems.
  • Check out some of the residential areas for an authentic look at life in Athens.
  • Enjoy one last group dinner, and raise a glass to an epic trip.

Go Ancient: Step back in time in the historic Acropolis of Athens, and take in incredible panoramic views of Athens from the citadel’s hilltop vantage point. Follow the Light: Flood-lit like a beacon towering over the city, Mount Lycabettus offers a spectacular view of the city. If you’ve been holding out on posting a scenic Instagram post, this is your moment.

Farewell Dinner Share some last laughs (and maybe shed a few tears) at an included farewell dinner with the group.

Antio, filoi! Translation: Goodbye, friends. Your next destination awaits—home. Before you head to the airport, enjoy your last few moments together. Take one more group photo. Grab that final drink. (Fine, maybe a couple of drinks.) But this isn’t goodbye. It’s, “See you later.” The only question is, where?

go ahead tours to greece

Just got back from that tour with GoAhead. Titania was fine. It is a business hotel so there is a full restaurant, business center, etc. The location was also fine. A shoft walking distance to the Playka. Rooms were fine.

' class=

As stated above, I took this tour with GoAhead in April 2008 and it was OK to good. A major problem with GoAhead I have found (this was my third trip with them - there will not be a number four) is that if you live on the West Coast as I do, travel with them to Europe can be very convoluted, time-consuming, a hassle, and most of all very inconvenient.

And don't get me started on the pipe that burst in my cabin on the first night. The ship was completely full, so I couldn't change rooms. No compensation, apologies, etc. I had to walk on squishy floors covered with towels for three days. The ship is old and somewhat dirty/musty. Over half the people on my tour got that cruise syndrome which causes vomiting, diarrhea, and more. We were miserable.

Istanbul was fabulous - probably the best part of the whole trip.

The other two trips I took with GoAhead were Walking through Provence and Walking through Tuscany. Both were great except for the travel arrangements to and from the West Coast.

' class=

Although I've never heard of GoAhead, I'm surprised they didn't supply you with the name of the hotel you booked for their tour! Most tour operators will offer you a choice which basically reflects budget-wise the hotel *category*.. As for the Titania, it is pretty much as described..a business hotel..and does allot of 'package tours' and groups..I don't know what the rooms are like but that rooftop bar and restaurant is wonderful..not crazy about their lobby though..a bit too stark for my taste..but it does the job since you'll be mostly on the go and basically use the property to wash-up/sleep! Enjoy!

All-in-all I would travel with Go Ahead again.

Hope you have a great trip!

I agree the ship part wasn't high class but it was clean and all the other tours used them too. The majority of the time wasn't spent on the ship so it was bearable and we had plenty of time on shore at each stop.

Greece Vacations

Oia village at dusk - Greece vacation

Private Greece Tours and Luxury Vacations

Our private Greece tours are all about millennia-old historic sites and sun-drenched coastal towns, their whitewashed buildings stark against the deep blue sea. Wherever you go, tavernas serve fresh seafood, pies, plus iconic favorites: moussaka, souvlaki, dolmades, and keftedes.

The legendary Acropolis looms atop a hill in the capital Athens. Spend the better part of a day exploring its museum and the Parthenon—an ideal way to begin your lesson in Greek history. Follow it up with a cable car ride up Lykavittos Hill at sunset for fabulous views of the city. Take the time to plunge into the maze of cobblestone streets in the Plaka neighborhood, where cafés and markets mingle with ancient ruins. Not too far from Athens is Delphi, where the Temple of Apollo and the Delphi Archaeological Museum let you capture the magnificence of the ancient Greek civilization. Continue your explorations at the rock formations in Meteora and the ancient Olympic stadium in Olympia.

The toughest choice you need to make is about which of the hundreds of islands you should visit on your Greece tours. Whether you choose to go island-hopping or stay in one spot, a knowledgeable Enchanting Travels expert can help you create a perfect itinerary. In the Cyclades islands in the South Aegean Sea, it could be Santorini for its sunsets, black lava beach, and the ancient ruins of Akrotiri. Mykonos for cubist architecture and the buzz of trendy restaurants and nightlife. On Folegandros, vibrant blue doors and pink bougainvillea make the cliff top village of Hora one of the most picturesque you’ll see. And Paros island promises gorgeous beaches and a splendid old church and Byzantine museum.

On Crete, the largest of the Greek islands, explore Minoan civilization through a visit to the Palace of Knossos with our tour guide. This isle also has mountains, beaches, and its very own wines.

Then, for a true experience of  “siga siga” , the Greek attitude of slowing down life, take to the romantic town of Nafplio, or quiet and luxurious Porto Heli, on the northeastern Peloponnese coast.

Our experts can advise you on the  best time of the year to travel to Greece  and craft an experience based on your preferences. Get in touch with us for your personalized, obligation-free itinerary.

Best time for travel greece island hopper featuring athens, mykonos and santorini.

While just about any month is great to visit Greece, there are a few prime times of the year for the Greece Island Hopper tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Spring: Santorini, Mykonos, and other Greek islands open to tourists in mid- to late April. While the weather is mild, most find the beaches are still chilly for swimming or sunbathing. Minimal crowds yield maximum photo opportunities.

Summer: July and August in Greece are hot! (In extreme heat, it’s possible for the Acropolis to be closed during the hottest hours of the day to protect workers and visitors.) During the summer season, tours only run in early July and late August, when temperatures aren’t as extreme. It’s during these months when many Greeks and other Europeans vacation here, too, making it a busy time to visit.

Fall: With kids back to school, September and October are great times to go on tour. Greece remains very busy, as the tourist season on Santorini and Mykonos extends into October, and the water temperatures offer perfect swimming conditions. There may still be crowds at the Acropolis and other popular sites along the way.

On Tour Air Included

  • The cost of all internal flights on tour or within an extension are included into the total tour cost on our website and brochures.
  • Purchasing internal flights through Collette is now required on tours where applicable.
  • This price continues to exclude all round-trip air getting to and from the tour, as well as any additional air segments required to arrive at or depart from an extension.
  • The cost displayed is based on availability at the time of booking.

Enhance Your Trip

  • Tour Extensions

Extend your tour longer with a 3-night stay in Istanbul, Turkey’s most popular city. Istanbul is a central hub for intermingling cultures and legendary architecture. As the former capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, walk in the footsteps of centuries of travelers before you. From the towering Hagia Sophia to the lively Grand Bazaar and Spice Market, you’ll find an indescribable blend of nostalgia and modernity. Full of authentic flavors and legendary cultures, a trip to Turkey is not one you’ll soon forget.

  • Athens - Istanbul, Turkey
  • Fly to Istanbul,* Turkey’s most popular city. Considered to be the bridge between the East and the West, Istanbul is a central hub for intermingling cultures, complicated history, and legendary architecture. The city was the former capital of the Byzantine and Ottoman empires – which is seen through its blend of times-gone-by nostalgia and ever-evolving modernity. This evening, kick-start your exploration of Istanbul by sampling Turkish cuisine during dinner at a local restaurant.
  • Discover the city with a local guide. Start your morning at the famous Hagia Sophia, the Church of the Holy Wisdom. At the time it was built, this massive cathedral was the largest in the world. Continue on to the Blue Mosque,** where vibrant blue tiles line the building’s opulent interior walls. This morning also includes a visit to Topkapi Palace, the main residence of sultans of the Ottoman Empire. After free time for lunch, continue exploring Istanbul with your local expert. Make your way through the lively Grand Bazaar and Spice Market, surrounding yourself with artisan crafts, buzzing energy, and exciting vendors. Enjoy an evening at leisure.
  • Start your day with a relaxing cruise on the Bosphorus, and see the city from a different vantage point. The rest of the day is yours! Explore the local boutiques or maybe taste the culture through Turkish favorites. Perhaps you will choose to go on an optional excursion to a Hammam Turkish bath, where you’ll enjoy an authentic scrub and foam bath.
  • Istanbul - Tour Ends
  • Your tour ends today.

Hotel-Titania Hotel Athens

Immerse yourself in the flavors of the Cycladic Islands during a tour of Mykonos’ culinary gems. Begin the morning at a local farm where you learn about the traditions and history of cheese making, a craft that in Mykonos achieves almost the status of a local art form with secrets passed down through the generations. Sample Xinotiro, Kopanisti, and Vrasto cheeses and freshly-made yogurt, all produced at the farm. Later, explore more flavors of the island at a local bakery before visiting Ano Mera, a traditional rural village with picturesque whitewashed chapels and iconic blue trimmings.

Make the most of a day at leisure and see all that Greece has to offer with an island-hopping adventure! Set sail for the tiny islet of Nea Kameni – an uninhabited island that is formed on an active volcano. Make your way up the side of the still-active volcano with your local guide, pausing at the top of the crater for unparalleled views. After exploring, return to the boat to set off for your next destination – Palea Kameni. Similar to Nea Kameni, this islet is also of volcanic descent. Jump into the water and swim to the island’s rejuvenating hot springs, where you will find ethereal sulfuric waters and therapeutic mud - or choose to relax on the boat. Continue on to Thirassia, an authentic island that embodies the traditional culture of Greece. Enjoy a Greek buffet onboard and take in an unparalleled view of the island as you dine. After dinner, make a stop close to Oia as the sun sets. Marvel as the sky turns shades of orange and gold before sailing back to port.

Take a step into the past with a half-day excursion to the island of Delos, the fabled birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. After a quick 30-minute boat ride, allow your guide to introduce you to this sprawling UNESCO site. See how the Greek myths intertwine with prehistoric ruins, passing through narrow streets from the Hellenistic age. Tour the awe-inspiring House of Dionysus, a relic from the 4th-century BC containing ancient mosaics and preserved columns. Peruse the Temple of Apollo, the Sacred Lake, and the guardian Naxian Lions with your guide before enjoying time to explore independently. Take in views of the Sacred Island of Delos as you ferry back to Mykonos.

Join a local expert in Athens and explore the city's world-renowned sites.

Board your overnight flight to Naples today.

Welcome to Italy! Travel to your hotel on the Sorrento Peninsula, which opens to the Bay of Naples and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Our recommendation for freshening up? Order an espresso con panna, served with a heaping dollop of fresh whipped cream. And take your time—Italians don’t usually take their coffee to go, so sidle up to the coffee bar and savor yours slowly.

Then, meet your Tour Director and fellow travelers at tonight’s welcome dinner, served with beer or wine.

Join your local guide and sail across the Bay of Naples to the famed Isle of Capri. Known around the world as a playground for chic jet-setters, Capri’s dramatic coastline is dotted with colorful cliffside hotels and lavish villas. You’ll traverse crystalline waters by boat and spend time on the island before returning to the Sorrento Peninsula.

  • Boat around the island and bask in the romance of Capri’s caves and grottoes (weather-dependent). You can admire the elaborate White Grotto and Faraglioni rocks as they jut out of the water.
  • Stroll through the winding alleys of the village of Capri, lush with Mediterranean flora—palm trees, umbrella pines, and bright pink-and-purple bougainvillea.
  • Take a funicular ride to Capri’s upper town and watch the island’s vistas unfurl below you.
  • Explore the Gardens of Augustus—a botanical garden with an intimate setting, intoxicating blooms, and a dreamy view of the water.

End the day by adding an excursion to an agriturismo—or farm stay—where you’ll indulge in a four-course, farm-to-table meal, as well as a tour of its fertile grounds. Prefer to spend the time exploring on your own? Enjoy your free evening in the Sorrento region by tracking down the best limoncello.

Rustic Italy: Farmhouse Dinner & Wine Tasting

From $175 per person

En route to Rome, stop at Pompeii for a guided walking tour of the city’s ruins, frozen in time since the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The former port town lay buried under ash for 1,500 years before being rediscovered, and ongoing excavation continues to uncover remnants of everyday life before disaster struck.

  • Discover how Roman citizens lived 2,000 years ago as you stroll through remarkably preserved temples, public baths, and amphitheaters.
  • View the excavated ruins of Roman theaters, villas, temples, and baths.

Then, continue to Rome and sit down for dinner, served with beer or wine.

Follow in the footsteps of the ancient Romans on a guided tour of the Eternal City.

  • Immerse yourself in the grandeur of Imperial Rome, where history unfolds around every corner.
  • Experience the awe-inspiring Colosseum, a monumental amphitheater that reverberates with the roar of ancient spectacles. Walk in the footsteps of gladiators and feel the weight of history pressing down from all directions.
  • Traverse the evocative ruins of the Forum, once the pulsating heart of Roman life. Listen for bygone echoes of parades and gripping trials as you explore the remnants of this marketplace of yore.
  • Imagine the deafening roar of the crowds at Circus Maximus, where Romans raced chariots and gladiators faced off against each other.
  • Pass the collapsed ruins of the once-sumptuous Baths of Caracalla, an integral part of Roman social life.

This evening, choose to get your hands dirty—with flour, that is—by adding an excursion to a pasta-making class. You’ll learn traditional techniques for preparing and rolling out fresh pasta before digging into the dishes you prepared.

Need a moment of respite? Use your free time this afternoon and evening to visit Aventine Hill, home to the peaceful Orange Garden (Giardino degli Aranci) and a view of St. Peter’s Basilica.

It’s your final full day in Rome. Whether you want to take it easy over a morning cappuccino or admire the exquisite art and architecture of the Galleria Borghese, use your free day at your leisure. You can descend into the eerie underground chambers of the Capuchin Crypt—also known as the Bone Chapel, the way it’s adorned with skeletal remains in a unique display of artistic macabre—or add an excursion to the sacred walls of Vatican City, where the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica, and countless masterpieces await.

Please note: On some departures, the optional Iconic Sights: Vatican City excursion may be moved to day 5.

Iconic Sights: Vatican City

Fly to Athens, Greece. Then, stop at the Corinth Canal as you travel to Nafplio. This narrow waterway connects the Gulf of Corinth to the Saronic Gulf and was an important navigational route upon its opening in 1893. While it’s too narrow for today’s modern vessels, its steep limestone walls provide a scenic contrast to the aquamarine waters.

Romantic and slightly out of the way, Nafplio is a thriving seaside town with a rich history that exhibits Roman, Venetian, and Ottoman influences. After settling into your hotel in Nafplio, join your fellow travelers this evening for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Join your Tour Director on a walk through Nafplio’s charming Old Town: Take in Syntagma Square (alive with locals enjoying a coffee or a nightcap), quaint restaurants, and historical buildings around every turn. For a keepsake to take home, look for shops selling worry beads. Used for relaxation or stress relief across Greece, the city has a storied tradition of producing them.

Visit Greece’s archaeological wonderland of Epidaurus, famous for its amphitheater. Remarkably well preserved, it was constructed toward the latter part of the fourth century B.C. as a site for religious ceremonies. In the theater’s current incarnation, visitors can enjoy performances of Greek dramas, set against a backdrop of the surrounding valley and mountains.

Your guided tour continues in the UNESCO-listed archaeological site of Mycenae. No visit to the eastern Peloponnese would be complete without a visit to the cradle of Mycenaean civilization, which peaked between 1400–1200 B.C. As you walk through the hillside citadel, you’ll come across the remains of homes, storefronts, ancient tombs, and Agamemnon’s Palace.

Nothing can prepare you for the sheer sense of awe you’ll feel when you come face-to-face with Athens, where ancient architecture and artifacts coexist with modern life.

Spend a free afternoon to relax and settle in, or opt into the excursion to Cape Sounion this afternoon, where the remains of the Temple of Poseidon—god of the sea—offer the perfect vantage point to take in panoramic views of the Aegean and its island chains.

Cape Sounion

Meet up with your dedicated local guide, who will introduce you to the highlights of this bustling capital.

  • Pass by the Panathenaic Stadium, built entirely out of marble—the only such stadium in the world.
  • Continue to Syntagma Square, home to the neoclassical Greek Parliament building, and admire the plaza’s imposing marble steps, fountain, and lush shade trees.
  • Reflect on the Arch of Hadrian, built to honor the Roman emperor, and imagine how its Pentelic marble stones were carted more than 11 miles from Mount Pentelikon in 131 A.D.
  • View the remains of the sixth-century Temple of Zeus and gaze up at its 16 ornate Corinthian columns.
  • Hop off your bus and walk through the Plaka. Situated at the foot of the Acropolis, this district is one of the oldest parts of Athens and is known as “the neighborhood of the gods” due to the dozens of monuments strewn throughout.
  • Set off on a walking tour around the ancient Acropolis—site of the Parthenon, Temple of Athena Nike, and Erechtheion. You may have seen these enduring icons of antiquity in books and film, but now you’re stepping through the work of craftsmen who quarried and honed these marble blocks thousands of years ago.

Spend a free afternoon in Athens to explore on your own. Head back to the Plaka district, or wander through Anafiotika on the northeast slope of the Acropolis. The neighborhood dates to the 19th century and is chock-full of charming whitewashed cottages and vibrantly hued doors, the likes of which you might have seen—or will see soon—on Greece’s Cycladic islands.

Tonight, celebrate your trip with your group over a farewell dinner, served with your choice of beer or wine.

Transfer to the airport for your flight home. Or, extend your stay to visit inimitable Santorini, where you’ll dive into white-and-cobalt-tinged postcard views of the iconic island. Walk through picturesque fishing villages, enjoy a cruise or local wine tasting (or both), and get your fill of just-caught seafood.

You’ve seen the photos—now get ready to star in them yourself. Board a ferry to Santorini today. Watch for the steep cliffs that plunge into the Aegean and the island’s famed caldera (the large depression formed by a volcanic eruption), dotted with whitewashed buildings.

Your guided tour of Santorini will take you from black sand beaches to jagged cliff-lined shores and back—a stark contrast to the island’s beloved whitewashed buildings and sprays of fuchsia bougainvillea vines.

  • Visit the archaeological excavations at Akrotiri, a settlement buried in volcanic ash, where richly pigmented Bronze Age frescoes and other Minoan artifacts survived a devastating volcanic eruption in the 16th century B.C.
  • Ride to the top of Mount Profitis Ilias for a panorama of Santorini, neighboring island chains, and blue waters kissing the horizon.
  • Stop in small, picturesque Pyrgos, where you’ll weave through the steep streets of this slightly off-the-beaten-path village.

Spend a free afternoon poking around shops and sampling local wine, or opt to join what’s sure to be an unforgettable excursion—a steal-your-breath-away catamaran cruise with views to match.

Santorini’s nutrient-rich soil lends itself perfectly to growing wine grapes. Get to know the island’s unique vineyards during an excursion to a local winery, complete with a tasting and accompanying lunch.

Prefer to spend the day on your own? You can sample some traditional dishes—like moussaka (a hearty eggplant dish) or tomato fritters—then explore the unique black-pebbled shores and clear waters of Kamari Beach. End the day with a sunset stop at the lighthouse found on the southern tip of the island.

Please note: For an additional cost, you can book a visit to the village of Oia through your Tour Director. The visit will either take place on the evening of day 11 or 13, depending on the ferry schedule.

  • Roman food is typically freshly prepared and varies depending on the season. Must-try bites include cacio e pepe (a simple dish of pasta, cheese, and pepper) and supplí (a fried rice ball similar to Sicily’s arancini).
  • For more authentic meals, try local trattorias, small restaurants set away from the main piazzas. A typical Italian meal includes wines and the occasional beer, followed by a few sips of after-dinner drinks like grappa or limoncello.
  • Greece’s warm climate ensures a constant supply of fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables. Salads served with aromatic olive oil, feta cheese, and oregano are plentiful. Simple grilled fish and meat are integral to Greek cuisine, as well as squid and octopus. Don't miss the spinach and cheese pies, called spanakopita.

  • You will use the euro on tour.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers. We also recommend keeping coins in the local currency on hand, as some public bathrooms may charge a fee for use.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the chat feature in the app.
  • Wifi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wifi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey. You will have the same Tour Director throughout your tour.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • Italy is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and six hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • Greece is two hours ahead of GMT and seven hours ahead of ET.
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 6pm in Italy and 7pm in Greece.
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • Environment: On this tour, we recommend the use of a reusable water bottle, as the local drinking water is safe for travelers. Your Tour Director can provide additional guidance on local water standards. Make sure to bring a reusable water bottle to cut down on single use plastics.

EF Go Ahead Tours Review 2024: Are their guided tours worth it?

EF Go Ahead Tours Review 2024: Are their guided tours worth it?

EF Go Ahead Tours is a world-leading guided tour company offering a comprehensive travel package with local guides and authentic travel experiences. You've likely heard of them before, but are they really worth it? What do they offer, and how do they stack up to other guided tours?

go ahead tours to greece

Guided tours are a great way to travel, make new friends, and enjoy new experiences without the hassle of planning the logistics of the trip.

While guided tour companies boast of convenience, they tend to fall short when it comes to flexibility and customization. Hence, many travelers resort to planning their trips by themselves using helpful apps like  Pilot .

But, if you still prefer a guided tour with some level of flexibility, EF Go Ahead Tours is definitely a choice to consider.

EF Go Ahead Tours is one of the world's largest tour companies that host small group tours with unique, authentic experiences. A great benefit of joining an EF Go Ahead Tour is that they allow travelers the benefits of hosting a free private tour with larger groups.

However, are the experiences they're offering for you? What are the pros and cons? Here's our review of EF Go Ahead Tours!

EF Go Ahead Tours Logo.

What is EF Go Ahead Tours?

EF Go Ahead Tours  is a brand under the EF Tours group that offers both guided and fully customizable tours to destinations worldwide. It caters to young and older travelers, admitting anyone from age six and above (under-age travelers accompanied by adults). The number of travelers in each group is capped at 14-38, and small group tours only admit 10-22 people.

EF Go Ahead Tours aims to provide you with meaningful tours with flexibility and personalization. It also promotes responsible travel by supporting local communities and adopting sustainable practices.

EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app helps you easily manage your bookings and view tour details. It is available for both Android and iOS devices.

What does EF Go Ahead Tours offer?

  • Tour directors and local guides:  A tour director is assigned for each group to be in charge of all logistics of the trip. They will accompany you throughout, sharing insider knowledge and background information about places you visit.
  • Accommodation:  3-4 star hotels that provide comfortable amenities while being located in close proximity to the city.
  • Meals:  Breakfast and some other meals are included in the pricing. Primarily, they focus on local food and beverage specialties. They will arrange meals meeting your dietary requirements if necessary.
  • Transportation:  Transport between airport and hotels and other transportation required during the trip are included in the package. While flights are not included, you can get EF Go Ahead Tours to arrange them for you at an additional cost.

How does EF Go Ahead Tours work?

You can browse for tours by  Destination  or  Travel Styles  on the website. Travel styles are further categorized as  Trip Type, Interests, Seasonal and Special Events , and  With Your Own Group .

For example, all the related tours will appear if we pick Adventure Tours under travel styles. You can filter the results further by destination, dates, duration, price, and travel style.

Check out its details, trip highlights, prices, reviews, etc. There's a list of FAQs below related to the trip and other similar tours for you to compare and choose from.

What destinations does EF Go Ahead Tours cover?

EF Go Ahead Tours covers many of the popular destinations worldwide. Here's a list of where EF Go Ahead Tours covers:

  • Europe:  Ireland, Italy, Greece, Iceland, England, France, and Germany
  • The Americas:  United States, Canada, Costa Rica, Peru, Ecuador, and Belize
  • Africa & Middle East:  Egypt, Kenya, Israel, South Africa, Turkey, and United Arab Emirates

Benefits of EF Go Ahead Tours

  • Worry-free guarantee

If you cancel the booking within 60 days from the reservation date, you are entitled to a full refund. EF Go Ahead Tours also allows you to change the date of tour or destination up until your final payment day. It helps you book with confidence knowing there's ample time to make changes.

In addition to covering many destinations worldwide, the tour company also offers a diverse range of tours. Group trips for solo travelers provide ample privacy while facilitating socialization. In addition, there are cruise tours, rail tours, food & wine tours, battlefield tours, winter tours, and many more!

  • Fewer people

The worrisome factor about large group tours is they can seem too crowded and noisy to have a quality experience. There's also less opportunity to get to know other travelers better. In this case, small group tours offer a more intimate travel experience. Guides can give individual attention and advice easily. Overall, it makes the trip more enjoyable and memorable.

  • Flexibility

If you like to travel with friends but don't have the liberty to plan, get EF Go Ahead Tours to plan one for you. You can explain your requirements and get a whole new itinerary done or choose one they offer. Invite your friends and/or family, choose your travel dates, and enjoy. There's also the option of organizing faith-based tours!

Adventure travel experiences.

Drawbacks of EF Go Ahead Tours

  • Increase the number of tours

While there's a variety of tours, different trip options under each category are quite limited compared to other guided tour companies like  G Adventures  or  Contiki . For example, there's only one tour option for India. They can also add more countries to their list of destinations.

  • Improve refund and cancellation issues

Customers had faced refund and cancellation issues for scheduled or booked tours during the pandemic. There were complaints of EF Go Ahead Tours not refunding the money as per its cancellation policy. But, it's a common problem that many tour companies dealt with their customers following the Covid outbreak. We hope they are resolved now.

EF Go Ahead Tours vs. EF Ultimate Break

The most significant similarity between EF Go Ahead Tours and EF Ultimate Break is that they are managed by EF Education First Tours. This means that you'll most likely be getting a similar refund, cancellation, and customer service policies between the two tours.

EF Go Ahead Tours identifies itself as the 'older sibling' of EF Ultimate Break. Ultimate Break Tours is geared towards college students and folks aged 18-29, while Go Ahead Tours admits anyone 6 and above. So, the tours offered also tend to be different from each other.

EF Go Ahead Tours has a wide variety of tours catering to all age ranges. It also provides both private and group tours. EF Ultimate Break only offers group tours and are tailored to suit youth's preferences.
