Smooth ride

The ride is very smooth through the saddle, but a lot is transmitted through the handlebars. The bike is very stable on downhills up to my max of 44 mph. Upgraded the cassette and chain to Ultegra and shifting the rear became much smoother; cheapest maintenance change to do when your chain is worn. Upgraded the wheels to Dura Ace and lost about 1.25#; climbing instantly became better. Next upgrade is carbon handlebars 46cm and hopefully I'll get less road transmission into my arms. The dirty white bar tape will go away. The saddle was replaced early on with a Brooks. I average about 200 miles per week and do a significant amount of moderate climbing. So far there is about 7000 miles on the bike and I really enjoy it. I didn't give it a 5 overall because there is always something better out there, but this is the bike I'll be riding for a few more years at least. One of my better purchases. I recommend this for anyone looking for nimble, comfortable ride. Probably not for a racer, because lighter models are available.

Race light wheel spokes do not hold up. Remember you are isolated from a lot of the impacts the bike is absorbing. Hands and feet still vibrate. Section of road with caterpillar track damage hurts my feet but the vibrations don't get to my seat. White bar tape immediately looks dirty. Bontrager seat is not comfortable. 4 series carbon not so light. Notice seat movement with cadence over 105. (but smoothed out stroke, originally noticed movement over 90 cadence). Carbon bike: SKS raceblade fender mounts mar the surface finish. I need to get the Trek fender mount accessory pieces.

Smoooooth! Good commuter and distance ride. Bet you will change out wheels and seat. Reliable and takes a beating so you don't.

Very stiff, very smooth, great handling. 6800 ultegra group is brilliant. Wheels feel excellent, stiff durable and smooth. Spokes are standard dt which will make replacements cheap and easy to source.

2014 Trek Domane - I've been riding and racing for about 15 years, have owned 1 custom steel, 2 aluminum, 1 carbon and a scandium alloy bikes. This is a huge step up! The marketing jargon is true, the bottom bracket is as stiff as any bike I've ridden. However the isospeed REALLY works, I was even pedalling seated across stock grids! It handles great, and all (except stock saddle) the bits feel spot on. Oh and it looks great. It's actually a really nice pearlecent white which you can't see on the website. I test rode giant defy advanced, cannondale synapse, specialized roubaix. All the others were good, but this was the best, I don't want to change anything other than the seat. This was also the cheapest. Oh yeah I'm not little either with a fighting weight of 90 kg if it can be this good for me, I reckon it's pretty darn good. Highly recommend it.

Ultegra/105 components, superior seat vibration relief, light and stiff frame, metallic paint scheme.

None so far after 500 miles

Great mix of Ultegra and 105 components for this price range. The standout though is the Iso Speed decoupling, its no gimmick and definitely smooths out road chatter and bumps from uneven pavement. Its not a miracle cure and your hands still get rattled up on rough pavement but coming from a Synapse using the same saddle, there is a HUGE difference in what you feel transmit to your seat. The frame is beefy and offers great comfort for up to 63 miles, my longest since owning it, with just slight discomfort which I know my upcoming fitting will remedy. The frame has a BB90 bottom bracket, hidden fender bolts, a chain dropping prevention device (I've dropped mine 3 times, LBS says it needs adjusting) and will take 28mm tires which is my next upgrade and has been highly recommended. The other Bontrager RL components seem like good pieces so far.

Trek Madone 4 road bike series

Trek’s ever-popular 4 Series continues as a three-bike range for 2014, with the brand including this model in its popular custom programme, Project One.

Using 400 Series OCLV (Optimum Compaction, Low Void carbon manufacturing process), the chassis is the first in the Wisconsin firm’s Madone range to use Kamm Tail technology. Derived from the motor industry, Kamm Tail aerodynamics feature on the frame and forks, sharing this design with higher-spec Madone models and, specifically, the Speed Concept time trial series machines.

Using a flattened profile on the rear of the down tube makes for a stiffer tube — it also tricks the wind into acting as though there’s a full foil. This creates a virtual tail that hugely reduces wind resistance and gives excellent crosswind performance. Better still, the Kamm Tail’s profile complies with the UCI’s 3:1 ratio, but its wind-tricking performance is equivalent to that of a 5:1 aerofoil.

It’s not just about the profiling of the tubes; the 4 Series also carries Trek’s proprietary E2 head tube that is wider side-to-side than front-to-back, with a wide 1.5in lower and 1-1/8in upper headset bearing to increase cornering performance. BB90 is also present; the 90mm-wide exclusive bottom bracket system is claimed to be one of the stiffest on the market.

Not only does the 4 Series offer most of the performance of its more costly siblings, it has some hidden talents. Vanishing mudguard mounts on the rear triangle add utilitarian potential.

The 4.5 model is all but sold out for the year, leaving just the 4.7 and 4.9 available off the peg. At £2,200, the 4.7 comes with a full Ultegra 6800 groupset, Bontrager componentry and tubeless-ready Bontrager Race TLR wheels to give a competitive package.

Trek 4300 Review: Is It a Good Bike or Waste of Money?

Trek 4300 belongs among one of the most iconic mountain bikes .

It was introduced in 2000 and kept in Trek’s lineup until 2014. So, it’s a pretty old bike already.

The question is:

Is Trek 4300 a good bike?

By today’s standards, Trek 4300 it’s outdated. However, many still ride it today because of its sturdy aluminum frame, quality components from Shimano (like brakes, shifters, derailleurs), front fork suspension, and relaxed geometry, allowing a comfortable ride.

Is Trek 4300 a Good Bike?

Trek 4300 was a very popular bike worldwide thanks to its quality and reliability.

Its price slowly increased from around $359.99 in 2000 to $549.99 in 2011. ( Source )

So, it was a great entry-level mountain bike suitable for beginners, commuters, and people who wanted a bike they could rely on.

It was available in multiple sizes (13, 16, 18, 19.5, 21″…), and it came in different colors and slightly modified components every year.

Trek 4300 was sold with rim and disc brakes and also an option for women with specific geometry, making it easier for women to get on.

The last generation of Trek 4300 was released in 2014. Then, it was discontinued and replaced by newer lines.

Main Features of Trek 4300

Let’s now dive deeper into Trek’s 4300 components so you better understand its value.

Aluminum Frame

One of the main features of every bike is its frame. All Treks 4300 were based on an aluminum frame.

Aluminum frames are durable, reasonably lightweight, and affordable. That’s why aluminum is still one of the most popular bike frame materials .

Trek 4300 can take a lot of abuse. In the end, it’s a mountain bike, so it must be durable to withstand rough terrain.

26-Inch Wheels

Trek 4300 was equipped with 26-inch wheels, which are agile and allow you to accelerate quickly but are not as fast, stable, and comfortable as 27.5 or 29-inch wheels.

You probably won’t find adult mountain bikes with 26-inch wheels today. However, kids’ mountain bikes, dirt bikes, etc., may still use them.

The mountain bike market shifted toward 27.5 and 29″ wheels. They are more comfortable, stable, and faster.

If you can, I recommend trying them in person so you can feel the riding difference.

Trek worked closely with Shimano, which supplied components like the shifters, brakes*, front and rear derailleurs, etc.

*Some models came with Tektro brakes.

Surprisingly, some components were supplied by other manufacturers. For example, SRAM supplied cassettes, Suntour forks, and cranks.

Other components like the saddle, seatpost, handlebar, stem, etc., were made by Trek’s brand Bontrager.

By the way, the Trek’s 4300 handlebar was pretty narrow (600-620mm). Today’s mountain bikes come with 700 to 800mm.

The older generations of Trek 4300 came with a 3×8spd drivetrain, offering 24 gears. This range is wide enough for fast downhill and steep sections.

However, the disadvantage of the 3X drivetrain is its complexity. It’s heavier, more things can go wrong, and there is a high chance of cross-chaining.

That’s why 2X and 1X drivetrains are more popular nowadays.

Suspension Fork

Trek 4300 is a standard hardtail mountain bike with a suspended front fork (unlike the Trek 800 , for example).

Entry-level mountain bikes don’t offer too long suspension travel. It ranges from 70 to 100mm. Newer Trek 820 is one of the examples.

So, it can absorb some bumps, but it’s not enough for hard trails or downhill.

Treks 4300 were equipped with different forks from manufacturers like InSync or Suntour. However, due to the low price of the bike, these forks were pretty low-end, and you shouldn’t expect much from them.

Although the Trek 4300 is a pretty old bike, it’s safe to say it was timeless.

It’s a well-built bike you can rely on, suitable for commuting and rides in terrain.

If you are considering buying it second-hand, aim for a price of up to $250 for mint condition and around $150 for decent condition.

Trek 4300 Mountain Bike Features

Frame and fork.

First things first, the frame is a crucial component of any bike. In the case of the Trek 4300, it’s made of aluminum, which is a popular choice due to its durability, affordability, and lightweight. 

In fact, the original 4300 model used Trek’s Alpha Aluminum frame that’s tough enough to handle rugged trails with ease. As the model progressed, Trek introduced the Alpha Gold Aluminum material for the frame of the later versions of the 4300. 

This updated version has a more aggressive race geometry for speed, with internal cable routing for durability, and rack mounts for versatility.

You’ll also find that it has a replaceable derailleur hanger. Now, these upgrades made the bike more versatile and allowed it to handle a wider range of terrain.

Moving on to the fork, the Trek 4300 is a classic hardtail mountain bike with a front fork. This means that the front wheel is equipped with a suspension system that can absorb shocks and vibrations, making for a smoother ride on moderate terrain. 

The suspension fork has 70-100 mm travel, depending on the specific model, and it’s designed to handle mountain trails. However, it’s important to note that the suspension fork isn’t long enough to handle descents on rough trails.

In the first few generations of the Trek 4300, you could find a 3x8spd drivetrain with 24 gears.

But if you’re looking for something a bit more efficient, the later models of the Trek 4300 were fitted with the Shimano Acera M390 9-speed drivetrain. This gives you a wider range of gears for better control on hard trails.

Most mountain bikes we see now have 29-inch wheels, but the Trek 4300 had 26-inch wheels and 26×2.20 tires, which actually are very agile and will quickly pick up speed. 

In later models, these tires were improved to be puncture resistant and could withstand increased tire pressure. 

We consider bigger wheels to be better for mountain riding, but small wheels aren’t that bad either because they are more agile, tend to accelerate faster and will easily move around tight corners. And these features are great for technical riding. 

But the bigger 27.5 and 29″ wheels actually provide more stability and comfort, which is why they are now preferred for mountain biking.

Despite the small wheels, the double-walled rims and 32-spoke design of the Trek 4300 are pretty solid and tough enough to withstand years of abuse on the trails.

At the end of the day, the wheels and tires on the Trek 4300 are a great combination for riders who want to tackle technical terrain and need a bike that can handle quick acceleration and tight cornering. 

While the market may be shifting towards larger wheels, the Trek 4300 is still a great option for those who value nimble handling and puncture resistance.

Saddle and Handlebars

The saddle is an important component of any bike, especially when it comes to mountain biking. 

While the standard saddle on the Trek 4300 may not be the most comfortable, the 31.6mm seatpost offers plenty of adjustment for a customized fit.

When you combine the Bontrager Riser handlebar and the Bontrager Approved stem on the Trek 4300, you get a comfortable and stable ride. 

Size and weight

When it comes to finding the right fit, the Trek 4300 Mountain Bike has got you covered. With a wide range of frame sizes available, from 13″ to 22.5″, you’re sure to find the perfect fit for your body type. 

Actually, you may find sizes ranging from 13, 16, 18, 19.5, 21.5, 23.5″. But since these bikes have been discontinued by Trek, finding them in the exact size you want may be a challenge.

One thing to keep in mind is that the bike weighs around 28.2lbs (12.8 kg), which might not make it the lightest bike on the market. I believe this is due to the front fork, which adds weight but also adds extra shock absorption for a more comfortable ride. 

However, this bike is sturdy enough to support riders up to 265 lbs of body weight.

Ride quality and performance

The Trek 4300 Mountain Bike offers fun and confident rides on the trails, whether you’re hitting the trails or cruising around town. 

While it’s considered an entry-level mountain bike, don’t let that fool you. It’s a reliable bike that can be used for commuting, leisurely rides, or for hitting some challenging trails.

The comfortable riding position and triple chainring setup make it easy to tackle steep hills and rough terrain. Plus, the high-quality suspension system keeps things smooth and comfortable, no matter what kind of surface you’re riding on.

Trek 4300 has durable components that are built to last, so you don’t have to worry about things breaking down quickly.

Best Trek 4300 Alternatives

As Trek 4300 mountain bikes are now discontinued, you cannot buy them brand new. However, Trek has a range of trail bikes that offer superior build quality and performance. 

These models are more advanced and come at a higher price point than the budget options available from brands like Schwinn and Mongoose, but the investment is worth it as the quality is unmatched.

In my opinion, the Trek Marlin 5 and Schwinn Traxion are great alternatives for the Trek 4300 mountain bike.

Trek Marlin 5

Trek Marlin 5 is a trail mountain bike that’s built to gracefully handle daily adventures on rough terrains. It has a lightweight aluminum frame with a 2×8 drivetrain for smooth riding and shifting and powerful hydraulic disc brakes which provide fast and precise stopping. 

While the Marlin 5 is made for trail riding, it’s also versatile and can double as a commuter bike. This bike has a stunning frame with internal routing for the brake and shift cables, which can extend the lifespan of your wires by shielding them from the environment.

It’s the perfect bike for new trail riders and comes in seven frame sizes to fit riders of all heights. Marlin 5 is elegant and comfortable, with a ton of features that are typically reserved for more pricey bikes.

Schwinn Traxion

The Traxion MTB is equipped with a remarkably solid aluminum full-suspension frame that easily picks up speed and maintains it very well.

This bike provides comfortable rides and handles bumps well, regardless of where your trail adventures take you. Thanks to the wide knobby tires, sturdy double-walled aluminum rims, and a superb trail-taming Schwinn suspension fork. 

The 24 speed shifters also ensure fluid gear shifting, which makes for a fun and pleasant riding experience. In addition to that, the mechanical disc brakes lock into place instantly when applied, and this ensures precise and efficient stopping. 

The wheels have all-terrain tires and alloy rims for strength and low weight. Plus, you can easily adjust the height of the saddle using the quick release seat post to get your best fit.

While many brands have introduced “endurance” road bikes over the last few years, few have taken the idea to quite the extreme as Trek.

The Domane was developed with considerable input from Swiss pro cyclist Fabian Cancellara , who is known for his steam-engine riding style, using his massive power output to crush cobblestones in the fabled Spring Classics. He is said to enjoy the bike so much that he rides it year-round, even in the Tour de France, choosing it over Trek’s racier Madone model.

The frame features the intriguing IsoSpeed decoupler , an ingenious system that separates the seat tube from the top tube and seatstays, and allows the seat tube to flex and pivot at the mounting point. If you stand next to the bike and put your weight on the saddle, you can see the seat tube flex slightly, but while riding it is imperceptible until you hit a bump.

A High-Performance Machine

Make no mistake: IsoSpeed is not a suspension system, and this is still a high-performance machine. If you’re expecting something akin to a suspension seatpost, think again. The frame’s ride quality is distinctly carbon—a muted road feel with less of that high-frequency vibration you feel from some aluminum frames, but still generally stiff.

Iso Speed makes itself most noticeable when crossing railroad tracks or other high-speed, sharp impacts that would normally require you to lift or shift your weight on the saddle to avoid being bounced. Not having to do that means you can keep your cadence smooth and the power high. The system seems so extreme some might think it’s a gimmick, but I’m convinced. Trek is as well—the technology will soon be adapted to its line of hardtail mountain bikes .

At the other end of the bike, the fork deserves some of the credit. It was developed with an asymmetrical steerer tube that is slightly thicker side-to-side than front-to-back, giving it a touch of compliance, but it never felt soft or shuddering.

The difference between the Domane 4.5 and the higher-end models is in the stiffness of the carbon fiber itself, and that this version uses a standard 27.2mm seat post rather than a seatmast that is integrated into the frame. I actually prefer the standard post, as it can be swapped for countless alternatives and provides an easy spot to clamp the bike in a work stand.

Trek’s DuoTap Hidden Speed

Other frame details include a spot for Trek’s DuoTap hidden speed and cadence sensor, an integrated chain guide to eliminate dropped chains and more generous tire clearance than most frames. It also has removable fender eyelets, so you can keep the clean look if you’re not using them. For an even smoother ride, you can ditch the tubes and set up the Bontrager Race wheels tubeless—another technology that is easy to dismiss until you try it.

It would be a mistake to write off the Domane as a “comfort” bike for weekend warriors. Despite accommodations for a smooth ride, it is as stiff and race-worthy as I could ask. Yet the slightly longer wheelbase makes it extremely stable, and it’s one of the few bikes I’ve ever plunged downhill at 40mph with a crosswind while still feeling relaxed. The fit adds to the comfort factor, as the slightly taller head tube gives you a more head’s-up position than Trek’s race bikes. Paired with a set of shallow-drop Bontrager handlebars , I felt great in each of the riding positions, an essential element of a long, comfortable ride.

Domane: Initial Acceleration is Direct and Instant

The adage “laterally stiff and vertically compliant” has gone beyond cliché to become something of a running joke in road bike circles. The notion that a bike can be a stiff-as-heck race machine and still be comfortable over rough pavement on long rides is not unlike a unicorn—a magical beast that surely can’t exist. But on the Domane, initial acceleration is direct and instant, with the massive, squared down tube and BB90 bottom bracket all but eliminating lateral flex.

Back in Issue #16 I reviewed the Volagi Liscio, which also features an unusual seat tube arrangement—the seatstays bypass the seat tube and connect to the top tube. While the Liscio was smoother than the Domane in a straight line, it can’t compete with the Domane in terms of power transfer and handling accuracy. The Domane makes no sacrifices in these areas.

The Shimano Ultegra build kit performed flawlessly, as I expected. The compact crankset paired with an 11-28-tooth cassette offers tons of range for tackling the steepest pitches. The 105-level brake calipers offer power to spare, as a single finger is often enough to bring the bike to a stop.

Hitting the street for less than $2,800, the Domane 4.5 struck me as a steal, considering the high-end frame technology and the smart build kit. While it will likely be pitched to riders looking for a high-performance ride for centuries and gran fondos, the Domane is a race bike at heart that won’t beat you up on the weekdays.

Is The Trek 4300 A Good Mountain Bike? [Trek 4300 Review]

The Trek 4 series 4300 mountain bike is a classic Trek 4 series model. It is also many mountain bikers’ first entry-level model. I couldn’t find any mention of them on the Trek website for reasons I don’t yet understand. Hello and welcome to the Best Bike Select blog.

Trek 4300 features

Aluminum frame.

Despite its birth in 2000, the 4300 was built with an aluminum frame at a time when such bikes were more expensive. The frame has a moderately angled head tube and is not intended for intense trail riding.

It does, however, have a double-axle oval at the downtube and a widened finish at the link to the top tube, which increases the strength of the downtube when riding on rocky terrain.

Shimano’s 8-speed/9-speed

It has a 1X gearing combination, just like today’s popular high-end mountain bikes. The Trek 4300, on the other hand, was built with a 1X8 configuration over 20 years ago. However, the Trek 4300, manufactured in 2001 and 2002 and later, uses the Shimano Acera M390, 9-speed transmission, which increases the cost-effectiveness of this mountain bike.

Hydraulic disc brakes

Hydraulic disc brakes are not the same as mechanical disc brakes. The braking effect is more powerful, and the braking stroke is shorter. The corresponding speed is higher, and braking is accomplished with a gentle flick of the brake lever.

Usually, hydraulic disc brakes are more common on motor vehicles and will be paired with hydraulic fluid, which requires little maintenance.

Front Suspension

The Suntour suspension has 80 mm of travel on the XS and S frames. The frame above M, on the other hand, has 100mm travel. This high-quality suspension absorbs road bumps well, whether you’re riding in the woods, on trails, or on rocky terrain. A spring knob with a pre-assembly function is also included. Before riding in the mountains, some adjustments must be made; riding too high or too low is not recommended.

Bontrager Tires

The Bontrager is a 26×1.95″ tire in the 2000 model, but the 2.6 x 2.2″ tire was introduced in the 2002 model. The 2000 version was tubed, but after several iterations, a tubeless tire that is better suited for mountain riding was introduced.

With improved puncture resistance. Can withstand increased tire pressure. The quality of the rims, on the other hand, will be more demanding. The double-walled alloy rims, which are not easily deformed, do a good job of wrapping the tires, but riding with low tire pressure is extremely dangerous, and air leaks can occur.

Fender bracket and rack

Despite the fact that it is defined as a mountain bike, the reserved mounting positions allow it to be transformed into a nice commuter bike. You can easily mount the rear seat because it is equipped with mudguard brackets at the front and rear where you can mount the fenders. Convenient for everyday riding.

Bike Comparison

Trek 820 mountain bike vs trek 4300.

The Trek 820 is also a good entry-level mountain bike, and the Trek 4300 is a good value for money. There isn’t much of a difference between these two bikes for general mountain riding.

However, when it comes to configuration, the Trek 820 mountain bike has a steel frame but weighs only 54 pounds more than the Trek 4300. Riders who enjoy multi-speed gearing will appreciate the ability to ride at different speeds on different terrain with 21 different speeds. Consider the Trek 820 mountain bike, a great beginner’s bike, if you like Trek and are looking for an entry-level mountain bike.

Schwinn High Timber VS Trek 4300

The Schwinn High Timber is an excellent daily rider. Your adventurous spirit requires more than just a regular commute. The Schwinn High Timber is another great mountain bike at a low price. It’s ideal for riding in the woods. However, the Trek 4300 is equally unsuitable for intense trail riding.

Beginners are more comfortable with the variety of mountain biking, constant practice on low-intensity hills or rough trails, and a modest budget to consider, as with entry-level mountain bikes. Of course, the Schwinn High Timber can accommodate all of these requirements.

Schwinn Bonafide VS Trek 4300

The tall Schwinn Bonafide is ideal for taller riders, and with 29-inch knobby mountain tires, it can be ridden faster on commuter roads and has a strong presence in rugged hilly terrain.

That is something the Trek 4300 lacks. The Schwinn Bonafide, on the other hand, has no knob adjustment and relies on a disc brake. However, it is one of the best mountain bikes available for under $500 today. If you’re a tall, inexperienced mountain biker, the Schwinn Bonafide is a good option.

Trek 4500 hardtail review

Clean, functional package

While the glamorous range-toppers attract attention, it’s usually the unsung and unremarkable mid-range bikes that generate most of a bike company’s profits. Trek know this, which is why the 4500 is the product of some time-proven design features and sensible, if unadventurous, hardware choices. It's a competent trail all-rounder that aims to please most riders, most of the time. But you could be having more fun for this kind of cash.

Ride & handling: Newbie-friendly but short on thrills

Trek has years of experience in turning out bikes that won’t scare off new riders. It shows in the 4500, which pulls off the deceptively simple feat of providing a ride position that’s both newbie-friendly and surprisingly efficient. The shortish top tube and longer stem won’t win any prizes for lively steering, but that’s hardly a major concern if you’re looking for your first steed. And the big stack of headset washers between the top bearing race and the underside of the stem leaves plenty of scope for adjustment as your tastes refine.

Out on the trail there’s little to disturb this feeling of confidence-inspiring can-do. Grippy tyres translate your efforts into forward progress without fuss, that extra large rear sprocket makes short work of steep climbs and 100mm of rock-swallowing travel up front means it’s hard to bite off more than the 4500 can chew. The only thing that’s missing is the liveliness that distinguishes fun frames from competent ones.

It’s also worth noting that with its relatively weighty build, conservative geometry and unforgiving wishbone rear end, the 4500 ploughs a furrow through – rather than skipping its way over – rougher sections of trail when the pressure’s on. That means it’s hard to get too excited about the 4500. It’s well built, doesn’t expect too much of you and gets the job done. But if you’re looking for thrills, this isn’t the bike to find them on.

Frame: Functional chassis is ready for a brake upgrade

True to form, there are no surprises in the 4500’s neatly welded chassis. You won’t find any wacky tube profiles or superfluous gussetry here – just well designed functionality. The hydroformed down tube features an extra bulge at the vulnerable head tube junction, doing away with the need for a separate welded strengthening gusset.

Tidy wishbone seatstays incorporate some neat rack and mudguard mounts that you’ll appreciate when commuting or touring, and there are two bottle boss mounts inside the main triangle. A cutaway disc mount, along with disc-compatible hubs, makes any future brake upgrade a relatively cheap and painless process, but you’ll have to live with the rim brake bosses on the seatstays if you make the switch.

Trek’s design team has gone with 100mm of travel up front, in the form of a RockShox Dart 2 coil-sprung fork. The difference between 80mm (3.14in) and 100mm (3.9in) at this price is largely down to your personal preferences, because ride quality is affected by factors such as tyres, frame weight and resilience just as much as it is by fork performance.

Having said that, the Dart 2 is a decent contender, with adjustable rebound damping and a lockout function – great if you’re hard on the pedals and concerned about excess bob. It can’t quite match more expensive forks for controlled plush and steering precision, but it’s a good first line of defence in the battle against blurred vision and loose fillings.

Equipment: Nine-speed cassette and Bontrager kit

You may have noticed the lack of disc brakes on the 4500 already, but don’t worry, there’s an upside to their omission. Instead of hydraulic discs as standard, you get a nine-speed cassette at the rear, driven by Shimano’s evergreen and very reliable Deore mech. That extra rear sprocket creates room for 34 teeth and a genuinely useful low gear.

The Tektro/Avid rim brake setup isn’t as powerful in the wet as the best disc alternatives, but it makes up for it with easy maintenance and a light, progressive lever feel. The Bontrager finishing kit is all good stuff too – particularly the open-treaded Jones ACX tyres, which cope well with the UK’s slimy trail conditions.

Paramount Pictures officially announces the next Star Trek movie, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2025. As reported in January, the next Star Trek movie isn't the long-delayed, Chris Pine-led Star Trek 4 produced by J.J. Abrams, which remains in development at Paramount. Rather, the next Star Trek movie is an origin story directed by Toby Haynes ( Star Wars: Andor ) and written by Seth Grahame-Smith (A braham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter ).

Toby Haynes' Untitled Star Trek Origin Story is yet another prequel, but as it's said to be set decades before Star Trek 2009, it could very well be set after Star Trek: Enterprise 's mid-22nd century voyages but otherwise be an origin story for both Star Trek 's Prime and alternate Kelvin timelines .

Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 4 , which is the "final chapter" of the USS Enterprise crew led by Chris Pine's Captain James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto's Spock, has seen some movement with a new screenwriter, Steve Yockey ( The Flight Attendant ), tackling the long-delayed sequel. Pine and his fellow Star Trek actors, including Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, and Sofia Boutella, have all expressed their eagerness to return if Star Trek 4 can come together.

It's a positive sign that Star Trek movies are finally coming back.

Paramount+ is making their own Star Trek movies, with the recently-wrapped Star Trek: Section 31 awaiting a release date. Starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh, Section 31 i s the first made-for-streaming Star Trek movie, and it is reportedly set during Star Trek 's "lost era" with connections to Star Trek: The Next Generation. Section 31 could get a sequel if successful, and the Star Trek: Picard spinoff dubbed Star Trek: Legacy may also become a streaming movie instead of a series. However all this shakes out, it's a positive sign that Star Trek movies are finally coming back.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 4 Review: Rayner & Burnham Faced the Strange

By using a Time Bug, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 4 revisited the series' greatest hits, and deepened its heroes' characters and journeys.

The following contains spoilers from Star Trek: Discovery, Season 5, Episode 4, "Face the Strange," now streaming on Paramount+ .

In Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Captain Michael Burnham and her crew are in a race against a pair of space-pirates for the future of the Federation. Yet, with only five clues to find before getting to the finish line, there were bound to be some detours. "Face the Strange" is one such side-mission, but it's also a brilliant way to look back at the series' larger journey from being the new kid on the franchise's block to becoming a classic Star Trek series .

Producers said that Season 5 wasn't supposed to end the series, yet this episode is a perfect addition for its final mission. By using time travel as a framing device, the episode looked back at the journey the crew, and especially Burnham, embarked on ever since the show launched in 2017. This was exactly the kind of nostalgic and emotional trip down memory lane that one would expect a character-driven series like Star Trek: Discovery to do in its swan song.

Of course, time travel shenanigans are a classic Star Trek motif, and Star Trek: Discovery already had its share of such adventures. That said, what made this particular time-traveling escapade special was that it allowed for the return of a long-lost character, and it gave Commander Rayner a chance to further define and refine his character while also affirming his place on the Discovery's crew . While his connection to the crew is still a bit tertiary, this episode really showed that Burnham and Rayner made a fantastic and complementary duo.

Face the Strange Revisited Star Trek: Discovery's Greatest Hits

At the end of "Jinaal (Season 5, Episode 3)," Moll slipped into the Trill symbiont caves and planted a strange device on Ensign Adira Tal's sleeve. When "Face the Strange" opened while affirming that the recently broken-up Gray Tal and Adira will remain friends, the spider-like device (later referred to as the Time Bug) crawled from their sleeve and onto the ship.

Meanwhile, Rayner's harsh style of command rubbed Burnham the wrong way. She asks him to join her in the ready room for a slight dressing down, which inadvertently proves to be the crew's saving grace. When the Time Bug does its dirty work, the captain and first officer use their personal transporters, which prevents them from becoming unstuck in time like the rest of the ship and crew. This allowed them to find a way to free the Discovery from its time-displaced prison, and to reflect on their lives.

There is a brief jaunt to the future, Burnham and Rayner learn that their crew died and that the Federation was decimated after a Breen attack. This was also the third mention of the Breen this season, and one of their heaviest bits of foreshadowing yet. Interestingly, this grim sequence evoked the Star Trek: Short Treks episode "Calypso (Season 1, Episode 2)," which featured a marooned soldier many, many tears in the future encountering an abandoned USS Discovery occupied only by Zora.

The two Starfleet officers then appear on the ship during its journey through the wormhole at the end of Season 2. Next, they were thrown back to the battle against Control, the evil artificial intelligence that wanted to merge with the "Sphere Data" that became Zora. They also traveled to the distant past before the Discovery was even launched. However, their most important trip to the past took place just a few weeks after Burnham joined the ship. The best thing about this sequence was that it allowed Airiam, the human-turned-cyborg who died in Season 2, to return for a brief few scenes. That said, this sequence was all about Burnham and her personal journey.

Captain Michael Burnham Confronted Her Past, Insecure Self in Face the Strange

As Rayner and Commander Paul Stamets try to figure out how to stop the Time Bug, Burnham encountered her past self in a turbolift. Past Burnham immediately thinks her future self is a shapeshifter. However, in a universe with wormholes, time travel and the USS Discovery's spore drive , the possibility of a shapeshifter using their telepathic abilities to copy the memories of whoever they impersonated wasn't a big stretch. This led to a fun sequence where Burnham fought her past self.

After incapacitating her past self with a Vulcan Nerve Pinch, Burnham gave voice to the subtext of this entire journey. Burnham reminded audiences just how desperate things were for her back then. She was Starfleet's first mutineer, and her actions led to the death of her mentor, Captain Philippa Georgiou. Even though the Klingon leader, T'Kuvma, was going to start a war with the Federation, Burnham also blamed herself for this close call. The most unbelievable thing for the understandably self-loathing Past Burnham to accept was a future in which she not only had rank again, but was trusted enough to be given a ship.

While this makes Burnham Star Trek 's most relatable captain among the franchise's imperfect fans, the character herself can't believe she could attain new heights after falling so far. Yet, in trying to stop Rayner and Stamets, Burnham again proved her worth . She's determined to do the right thing to protect her ship, her crew and Starfleet itself. This episode underscored that Burnham's unique skill isn't her intellect or fighting prowess, but her commitment to higher ideals even when she thinks she's failed them in unforgivable ways.

Commander Rayner Finally Connected with the Crew in Face the Strange

While Burnham is and always was heroic, it's actually Rayner who saved the day and the rest of time in this episode. Hearkening back to his previous attempts to know the crew, Rayner was now able to prove to Past Lieutenant Commander Gen Rhys that they do know each other. Rayner may have only given Reese 20 words, but these were enough to discover Rhys's affection for Constitution class ships like the USS Enterprise . Still, Past Burnham was not convinced. It's only through Rayner sincerely connecting with her and his own understanding of what it's like to fall from grace that seals the deal.

He told Past Burnham something no one but she could know. Specifically, that when she first stepped on the bridge of the Discovery, she felt like she didn't belong. Yet, he reaffirms that she does belong not just on the vessel, but in command of it. Yes, she's made mistakes, huge ones when compared to those committed by previous Starfleet heroes and captains. However, her heart is always in the right place. In Season 1, Burnham seemed more Vulcan than human, but her emotions were still there. In fact, she cared so much that she told Captain Gabriel Lorca she didn't deserve to serve on a starship.

Another touching moment between crew members in "Face the Strange" came via Rayner's collaboration with Stamets . He was already depressed this season since the spore drive is, effectively, dead technology. Rayner also killed his science-buzz upon realizing the potential of the Progenitor's technology. Yet, when Stamets was worried about being able to save the ship, Rayner motivated him by saying "old dogs" like them still had life-saving tricks up their uniform sleeves. Despite his gruff demeanor, this episode showed why Rayner was such a successful long-serving leader in Starfleet -- especially in a post-Burn galaxy.

Moll & L’Ak’s Time Bug Is a Brutal Weapon Tied to Star Trek Mythology

Star Trek is full of near-magical and nonsensical technology like the transporters themselves , but even by these loose standards, the Time Bug is a little confusing. If Burnham, Rayner and Stamets weren't immune from its effects thanks to the latter's "tardigrade DNA," it's unclear exactly what the device does. Somehow, the present-day USS Discovery is incapacitated while the ship jumps back and forth through time. No one on the vessel is aware of this, and the crew complement changes with the times.

When Burnham and company arrive back in the 22nd Century, it's unclear what happened to folks like Commander Jett Reno or Adira, who were always in the 32nd Century. Trying to figure out how the Time Bug works is really a waste of time, since it's nothing more than a fun sci-fi concept that was used to drive an episode. The show gets around this when Rayner says the Time Bug is technology leftover from the Temporal War first introduced back in Star Trek: Enterprise, and wrapped up for good in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' Khan episode .

In previous episodes, Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 brought in connections to the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Chase (Season 6, Episode 20)," and it also built on the Trill mythology established in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . The Time Bug is yet another way the series used past Star Trek events to tell new, fresh stories instead of just dropping cute Easter Eggs. The bug was an illegal black-market weapon, but one that (despite its inconsistent details and lack of specifics) fit neatly into this six-decade-old universe.

While the crew lost six hours in their race against Moll and L'ak, they still came out ahead. They are now a more cohesive unit than ever before, meaning they will face whatever challenges come next as a tightly-knit crew. This was the way that any Star Trek crew should be.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Renewed For Season 4 At Paramount+

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for Season 4 at Paramount+, despite currently being in production on its third season.

On the other hand, it has been revealed that the animated comedy series Star Trek: Lower Decks , will end with Season 5 on the streaming platform. The final season will premiere this fall.

Strange New Worlds centers around Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) is the USS Enterprise commander at this point in the Star Trek universe. He is joined by younger versions of several legacy characters, including Spock (Ethan Peck), Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and Kirk (Paul Wesley).

It debuted in 2022 and had an epic second season that included a musical episode and a crossover episode with Lower Decks , helping it climb aboard Nielsen’s chart of the 10 most-watched streaming original series over multiple weeks.

“On behalf of the cast and crew of ‘Strange New Worlds,’ we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together,” said executive producers and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers, along with executive producer Alex Kurtzman in a statement according to Variety . “We can’t wait for you to join us and the crew of the Enterprise on another season of exploration and adventure.”

Lower Decks is set in the years following the feature film Star Trek: Nemesis and centers around the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner ( Tawny Newsome ), Brad Boimler ( Jack Quaid ), D’Vana Tendi ( Noël Wells ) and Sam Rutherford ( Eugene Cordero ).

The series also featured voice cameos from several Star Trek alumni including George Takei , Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor, and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Although some aspects of the storyline make it appropriate to conclude the show, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan are leaving the hull open for future iterations.

“We remain hopeful that even beyond Season 5, Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford, and the whole Cerritos crew will live on with new adventures,” they said in a message to fans. “While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we’ve spent making this show has been a dream come true.”

Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is slated to premiere in 2025.
