Barbecues are ten a penny, as are cricket games; just try not to mention the Ashes. It’s a fine time to catch a concert at the free St Kilda Festival, or to rummage around independent clothes and homeware stores in the hip suburb of Richmond. Most of all, though, try to do as the locals do — namely, decamp an hour’s drive south to the eucalyptus-scented Mornington Peninsula, where calm, sandy beaches and informal but high-quality vineyard restaurants await.

Average temperature 20C A more authentic alternative to Dubai, the UAE ’s capital city of Abu Dhabi is home to numerous treasures. Top trump, arguably, is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque; not only one of the world’s largest Islamic places of worship, but beautiful thanks to dazzlingly white domes and minarets. Similarly eye-catching are the island-set Louvre Abu Dhabi, which aims to bridge the gap between eastern and western art, and indoor theme park Ferrari World, devoted to Italy’s most famous fast car. The best places to travel in February prove that the shortest month of the year is full of vacation opportunities. Aside from all the romantic Valentine’s Day weekend getaways, it’s also a great time to embrace winter sports, check out new hotel openings, and shuck off the doldrums of January with a warm-weather escape . Whatever type of trip you choose, there’s no better mood-booster than a vacation in the middle of winter.

Here, we’ve rounded up 11 of the best places to visit in February, from storied ski slopes to remote islands. It’s never too early to start cashing in those paid vacation days, after all.

On the Mother Nature front, explore glorious wonders like Lake Atitlán and the active (but still explorable) Pacaya Volcano. Stowe, Vermont

Stowe has long been a top ski destination for East Coasters, thanks to its mix of high-quality intermediate and black diamond runs. Home to two different mountains, Spruce Peak and Mount Mansfield, a lift connects the two, making it easy for visitors to ski both on the same day. The town itself is also downright adorable, with old-fashioned general stores, steepled churches, and some of the best accommodations in New England. (And a Ben & Jerry’s factory.)

Costa Rica is always on our minds, but the country’s dry season (December to April) is probably the best time to visit. Sink into the pura vida lifestyle as you surround yourself with misty waterfalls, deserted beaches, and protected jungles. Cocos Island National Park, the only island in the eastern Pacific with a rainforest, is a world-class diving destination replete with hammerhead sharks, giant manta rays, sea turtles, and dolphins. La Amistad National Park is another unique site, with cloud forests, glacial valleys, and a rare tropical alpine grassland (say that five times fast). It’s also home to Cerro Chirripó, the highest mountain in Costa Rica .

Along with those natural wonders, the hotels and resorts in Costa Rica are an equally compelling reason to visit. Stay at one of the 50 colorful casitas at Nayara Gardens , a family-friendly resort where spacious balconies and outdoor showers afford views of the Arenal Volcano. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe is sunny and warm most of the year, but the New Mexico capital still gets its fair share of snowy weather—that snow looks extra beautiful against the adobe buildings and rock formations though. The best snow conditions of the year typically occur in February, beckoning travelers to the 77 trails at Ski Santa Fe . Back in town, places like the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum and Museum of International Folk Art provide culture away from the nippy weather. And if you get really cold, there’s nothing like the state’s supply of green chile to warm you from the inside out.

Readers’ Choice Award favorite Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi has a tangible warmth to it, with gaslit kiva fireplaces and hand-carved four-poster beds adorning the rooms. The downtown Adobe hotel is just a block from the Plaza, but the grilled elk tenderloin and achiote chile-roasted duck breast at the in-house Anasazi Restaurant might tempt you to stay put for the evening.

If Egypt is still an unchecked item on your bucket list, February might be the time to take the plunge. The month is particularly well-suited for a Nile River cruise , with mild weather ensuring you can actually enjoy pit stops in Luxor and Aswan, and not melt while walking through ancient tombs and temples, where temperatures rise well above 105 degrees during the summer.

More than 300 cruise ships sail along the Nile, but among the best and oldest is the S.S. Sudan . The ship moves at a leisurely pace, allowing passengers to take in the nature and architecture scattered along the riverbanks. You’ll definitely be able to relax, as there are only 23 cabins on board; but when the time comes for adventuring, the ship’s excursions include a visit to the Temple of Dendera near Qena, the temple of Kom Ombo, and Elephantine Island.

A chain of 26 atolls and more than 1,000 islands in the Indian Ocean, the Republic of Maldives is one of the most sought-after tropical destinations in the world. It’s also one of the best places to visit in February, when temps remain in the low 80s with little risk of rain—superb conditions for snorkeling and diving. If you’re a scuba or underwater expert, good news: Manta rays are easier to spot this month, as they cluster to feed on the surfeit of plankton near the atolls, and it’s also the start of whale shark season, another plankton-feeding animal that can grow up to 40 feet in length.

Hole up at Alila Kothaifaru Maldives , which opened in 2022 in the Raa Atoll. The Hot List-winning property offers true luxury and relaxation: Think perfect white beaches, endless palm trees, and thick jungle vegetation. The 80 villas (all with pools) are divided between overwater villas and beach villas, and guests can enjoy on-site restaurants and bars, as well as a spa tucked away deep in the jungle.

Telluride, Colorado

Easily one of the best ski towns in the U.S., this Colorado city rises above the pack with its gorgeous location, casual crowds, and ski experiences that are refreshingly free of artifice. Telluride has a whopping 148 trails of varying lengths and difficulties, as well as sublime winter sports like heli-skiing and snowbiking. For extra bragging rights, enjoy a four-course tasting menu at Alpino Vino , the highest restaurant in the country at 11,966 feet.

When it comes time to rest your head, the location of Dunton Town House truly can’t be beat, sitting on a pretty street adjacent to Telluride's main drag and gondola. The property could easily be mistaken for an Alpine chalet, with its hand-carved antiques, in-room fireplaces, and faux-fur throws. Plus, the B&B can only house ten people at a time, further cementing that home away from home feeling.

Jaipur, India

The Jaipur Literature Festival—one of the largest literary festivals in the world—is a 17-year-old, five-day extravaganza (February 1–5, 2024) drawing heavy-hitting arty types to Rajasthan’s Pink City for lectures, debates, and readings. This year’s roster features dozens of speakers, ranging from award-winning novelists to literary critics and art historians.

Another compelling reason to visit Jaipur this year: Villa Palladio Jaipur , a Hot List 2023 winner. The boutique hotel is a riotous ode to Rajasthani craftsmanship and color (especially hot red), featuring delicious details like hand-painted walls and bubbling fountains. Hole up in one of the nine dollhouse-like rooms and soak up views of the lesser Aravallis—all followed by Tibetan spa treatments and homemade Indian dinners.

Coastal Mississippi

New Orleans may be synonymous with Mardi Gras , but the coastal region of neighboring Mississippi embraces the season with equal gusto and a fraction of the crowds. Krewes host parades, including an assortment of more than 100 floats that glide around Biloxi on Fat Tuesday (which falls on February 14 in 2024, but you’ll want to visit earlier in the month to enjoy all the parties leading up to it). Duck into the city’s Mardi Gras Museum to see costumes, beads, and photographs documenting three centuries of celebration.

There’s also a kids’ parade in Pascagoula, and balls throughout the month—black tie and gowns required. And best of all, most bakeries in the region will also offer a King Cake, a pastry iced in the same shades and served in slices (whoever finds the plastic baby in their piece must provide the cake next year). Try a classic recipe from the Mockingbird Café in Bay St. Louis, or Melissa’s in Gulfport.

Tuscany, Italy

Bypass the summer crowds with a winter visit to Tuscany—one of the best places to travel in February. Start out by spending a few days in Florence : Book supper at the Massimo Bottura-run restaurant inside Gucci’s trippy flagship in the city center, Gucci Garden ; and explore the Uffizi and Accademia galleries virtually tourist-free. Then head to the coastal, Belle Epoque-era town of Viareggio—a little over 50 miles west of Florence—to celebrate Carnival.

While a major celebration in all of Italy, the Tuscan approach to Carnival is different from Venice’s iconic masked balls. Famous for building some of the world’s superyachts, Viareggio’s celebrations (February 3–24, 2024) include papier-mâché floats that are bitingly satirical, and the rest of Italy watches to see what current events will be targeted most mercilessly each year. Finish off the trip with a stay at the 5-star COMO Castello del Nero , a converted 12th-century estate in the Chianti region that’s been repurposed by the ultra-luxe Singaporean hotel chain.

Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs relishes its reputation as a chic enclave of mid-century design all year, but never more so than in February during Modernism Week . The event takes place from February 15 to 25 in 2024, featuring more than 350 events ranging from home tours to architecture lectures. (Tickets for every event tend to sell out quickly, so book as early as possible.) You can also visit the 200-acre Sunnylands complex, with its haute modern pink-roofed mansion built by the late media magnate Walter Annenberg and his wife. To explore houses that are usually off-limits, join one of the self-driven Signature Home tours, where visitors will see houses built in a variety of modernist styles.

Book a stay at Casa Cody , a 30-room hotel tucked away in the desert like a secret garden. It‘s the oldest operating hotel in Palm Springs, with velvet furnishings and wood-beamed cottages providing a nice contrast to the stark modernism you’ll be immersed in all week. Take a leisurely stroll around the bougainvillea-draped pathways, or take in the views of the San Jacinto Mountains as you enjoy breakfast made from the on-site garden.

Warmest Places & States in the US in February – To Escape The Winter Blues!

The second Monday of the year (aka Blue Monday) can have us longing for warmer climes, winter getaways, and spring to roll around sooner rather than later! In which case you may be thinking, like me, about where you could visit in February that will offer brighter days and warmer temperatures.

I decided to do a bit of my own research to bring you my top list of the warmest places to visit in the US in February so that you can simply choose a destination and set out to seek the sunshine!

While many destinations in the United States are still covered in snow throughout the month of February, there are a handful of destinations that still offer t-shirt temperatures and even the climate for some beachside relaxation! Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, and Hawaii offer the warmest weather in the US in February, and I’ll give you an overview of a few different locations so that you can see what takes your fancy…

The 10 Warmest Places to visit in the US in February

1. houston, texas.

Weather across Texas in February is pretty mild which allows visitors to explore the sights, walk around the cities and enjoy the state’s festivals without getting too chilly. However, even on cooler days, Houston offers plenty of indoor activities for travelers to discover such as the Houston Museum of Natural Science , the NASA Johnson Space Center , the Museum of Fine Arts, and Minute Maid Park, the home of Houston’s Major League Baseball team the Astros.

Temperatures in Houston in February will generally be in the mid 50/60s(F) so you’ll be able to wear lightweight clothing and still enjoy the city’s Waterwall Park, Buffalo Bayou Park, and Discovery Green.

By night, you might want to watch shows like Cirque du Soleil, catch some stand-up comedy, or watch one of the many gigs or sports games that are on throughout the month.

Recommended hotels to stay in Los Angeles: Ocean View Hotel  is an option for those wishing to be close to a beach. It is a 3-star boutique hotel with some rooms having views over the bay in Santa Monica. This lush climate allows you to spend days walking along the seafront, enjoying the amusements, bars, shops, and restaurants as well as lounging on the sand and perhaps taking a dip in the sea!

February is also a great time for festivals in Miami, with Miami Veg Fest, the Coconut Grove Arts Festival, Miami International Boat Show, the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, and even The Miami Marathon taking place throughout the month. This year, Miami is hosting the Superbowl Live on the 2nd of February, so it is a fantastic time to be in the city!

It, therefore, makes a wonderful family vacation destination for February and is especially good for those who want to avoid the scorching temperatures of summer. Temperatures in the 60s(F)/teens(C) mean that it is plenty warm enough to enjoy your hotel or villa swimming pool while also not being too hot to have days out at the Osceola County Fair or Pioneer Days festival.

Another hot spot for February in the US is Tampa, Florida with downtown being packed full of great things to do! Tampa offers museums, galleries, shops, and restaurants galore as well as unique attractions like the TECO Streetcar, the Tampa Riverwalk, and the Agua Luces when five of the city’s bridges are illuminated.

If the weather is particularly good in February, you may want to kayak or stand-up paddleboard on the water of the Hillsborough River which is a peaceful way to see the city skyline. February in Tampa also sees the Annual Flower Show come to town as well as the Beer, Bourbon & BBQ Festival and regular comedy and country gigs.

The crown for the warmest place in the US in February goes to Honolulu, Hawaii. The temperatures here in February barely drop below 65(F)/20(C) which is most definitely warm enough to enjoy Hawaiian beaches, and Polynesian culture, and to sip cocktails on the sand!

Some of the highlights of Honolulu include Waikiki Beach, Iolani Palace, Diamond Head State Monument, and discover the history of Pearl Harbour at the USS Arizona visitor center. Visitors who love the great outdoors may also want to swim and surf or even tackle the Koko Crater Trail on the southern side of the city.

There’s always something happening in Las Vegas, and the city’s first Super Bowl is already generating buzz. In Mississippi, February brings Mardi Gras festivities and an opportunity to honor Black History Month at the state’s important sites.

Lake Forest, Illinois

Located about half an hour from O’Hare International Airport and 30 miles from downtown Chicago, this city on the shore of Lake Michigan is perfect for a romantic getaway. Browsing the boutiques in historic Market Square, strolling along tree-lined streets, or grabbing a snack at Sweet’s are a few ways to explore Lake Forest. Sure, February in Chicago is cold, but it’s the perfect excuse to cozy up in front of a fireplace with a warming drink. Bundle up and take the Metra from the historic train station to Chicago Union Station to tour some of the Windy City’s indoor attractions, like The Art Institute of Chicago.

Where to Stay: The Deer Path Inn offers English-style charm, afternoon tea, a pub, two restaurants, plush rooms, and an inviting lobby with fireplaces and gorgeous furnishings. During my recent stay, I enjoyed a tasting in the Hidden Wine Cellar and a wonderful cocktail-making session with Master Mixologist Jorge Centeno, the Inn’s “Chief Spirits Officer.”

There’s always something happening in Las Vegas, and with events like November’s Grand Prix and February’s Super Bowl LVIIl , visitors have more reasons to head to the “Neon Capital of the World.” On Feb. 11, Allegiant Stadium will host Nevada’s first Super Bowl. In addition to the events surrounding the game, entertainment seekers will have several top concerts to choose from, including the ongoing residencies from U2, Adele, and Christina Aguilera. 

Where to Stay: Waldorf Astoria Las Vegas just completed the first phase of a major renovation which included the guest rooms and suites, and Caesars Palace recently debuted its redesigned Colosseum Tower. The Durango Casino & Resort just opened off the Strip with over 200 rooms and suites, gaming, and a food hall.

Miami, Florida

See what’s new at the International Boat Show (Feb.14-18), enjoy Art Wynwood (Feb.14-18), or dance to live music at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival (Feb.17-19). The South Beach Wine & Food Festival brings celebrity chefs, dinners, and wine tastings to its oceanfront location from Feb. 22-25. Miami is also perfect for a romantic Valentine’s Day visit — consider booking a sunset cruise on Biscayne Bay or a couples massage at one of Miami’s spas. Be sure to stroll along historic Española Way, revitalized as a pedestrian-only street with restaurants, bars, and shops.

Santa Monica, California

While you may not want to jump into the Pacific (although you’ll see many wet-suited surfers doing just that), you can enjoy ocean views and stunning sunsets as you stroll along Santa Monica’s waterfront this February. Without summer’s crowds, you’ll have no trouble hopping on the rides at the Santa Monica Pier or scoring reservations at popular restaurants. The weather is ideal for exploring the Santa Monica Mountains where you can go hiking or horseback riding to take in the spectacular vistas. If it gets too chilly, head inside to check out the art galleries at Bergamot Station or learn about California history at the California Heritage Museum , housed in a historic building.

Maui, Hawaii

The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum in Jackson is a good place to start, as it delves into stories of those who fought against social injustice with photos, timelines, and videos. Feb. 13 brings Mardi Gras , and the state’s early French influences show in its Gulf Coast towns with colorful parades, music, and vibrant costumes.

Port Jervis, New York

This historic small town is an easy getaway about 80 miles northwest of New York City. The year-round Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is nearby, and in summer, there’s whitewater rafting, fishing, swimming, and camping. In winter, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and ice climbing take over, and downhill skiing is available less than 45 minutes away. “Northeast travelers and city dwellers will love a February trip to Port Jervis to experience the charming small town and winter scenery, with opportunities for cozy fireside dining and outdoor adventures like skiing or hiking on the pine tree-lined paths,” Lisa Karvellas, co-CEO and owner of Cedar Lakes Estate, said in an interview with T+L .  

Where to Stay: Cedar Lakes Estate, set on 500 acres, features cottages and cabins for Winter Weekends that include meals and activities. 

Quebec City, Canada

Where to Stay: Québec offers many places to stay, but for a unique experience, consider Hôtel de Glace, the only ice hotel in North America. Guests are given sleeping bags, insulating sheets, fireplaces, and hot tubs to stay warm while it’s around 23 degrees Fahrenheit in their rooms.

Loreto, Mexico

Dry weather in the high 70s makes February a great time to visit Loreto, but the main attraction is the arrival of the blue whales during their winter migration. The largest animals on Earth, blue whales migrate each year to feed, mate, and give birth in the warm waters of Loreto Bay National Marine Park . Other whale species, dolphins, sea lions, and marine turtles also make their home in Loreto Bay. Located on the eastern coast of Baja California, Loreto is about six hours north of Los Cabos. The charming town features historic Spanish missions, beaches, restaurants, and an esplanade for seaside strolling. 

Where to Stay: Villa del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto welcomes families with spacious rooms, a kids club, an 18-hole golf course, a spa, five pools, restaurants, and an optional all-inclusive plan. “Loreto is known as a year-round destination, but February is an extra-special time for travelers looking to experience the magic of our incredible underwater wildlife,” Villa del Palmar general manager Miguel Lince told T+L. 

Courchevel, France

“In my opinion, the best ski destination in Europe is Courchevel. It offers the most variety of any ski resort in the world,” according to luxury travel planner and T+L Top Travel Advisor Jonathan Alder . The resort area includes a ski school, trails ranging from beginner to advanced, and many properties with ski-in, ski-out access. Family-friendly features include the new Aquamotion swimming and leisure complex with swimming pools, slides, river rapids, a climbing wall, and a spa. Courchevel is located in the Three Valleys ski area in southeast France; four international airports are about two hours from the resort (in Geneva, Grenoble, Chambery, and Lyon), and guests can also arrive by train with connections from London and Paris.

Where to Stay: Alder’s recommendations are L’Apogee , with a full-service ski valet, ski-in, ski-out access, and five-star service and Aman Le Melezin , a boutique ski lodge that provides the utmost luxury.

Dominican Republic

Located on the island of Hispaniola, the Dominican Republic is bordered by the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean with nearly 1,000 miles of coastline. Its gorgeous beaches are the main draw for many travelers, but there are other diverse landscapes to explore. Adventure travelers can soar over rainforests, explore deep in ancient caverns, or take river rafting trips. Snorkeling, deep sea diving, and boating to nearby islands are more things to do during your Dominican Republic trip. Francisco Camps, area managing director for Meliá Hotels International Punta Cana, suggests visiting during mid-February’s Carnival. “From the colorful costumes to the joyous celebrations taking over the streets, Carnival is one of the most unique times for travelers to visit and immerse themselves in the DR’s vibrant culture.”

Where to Stay: For a stress-free trip, choose one of the best all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic . Paradisus Palma Real Golf & Spa Resort in Punta Cana, an elegant beachfront resort, recently unveiled a $40 million renovation. The family-friendly resort also offers The Reserve , a separate adults-only section. 

The Bahamas

Family vacations, romantic getaways, and diving trips are all reasons to head to the beautiful islands of the Bahamas. The swimming pigs of the Exumas are a visitor favorite, and travelers can find secluded beaches and uninhabited cays during boating excursions. The islands are paradise for divers, with coral reefs, caves, blue holes, and shipwrecks to explore. And no visit is complete without trying local Bahamian specialties like conch fritters, Johnny cakes, and fresh seafood. With several international airports on the islands, visitors have lots of ways to get here.

With wildlife encounters, rugged Outback, and amazing wine, South Australia has a ton to offer visitors. Adelaide, the capital city, offers entertainment, dining, and Adelaide Fringe , a month of art and culture beginning on Feb. 16, 2024. Known for outstanding wines, the Barossa wine region is less than an hour from Adelaide. Kangaroo Island, a ferry ride away from the mainland, boasts rugged beauty, wildlife, and (of course!) kangaroos. Plus, February is summer in South Australia, so you can expect warm weather. 

Where to Stay: Two years after it was razed in the island’s bushfires, the luxurious Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island just reopened this month. The Louise , set among the vineyards of the Barossa Valley, offers 15 private villa-style suites.

Dolomites, Italy

Located in northeastern Italy, the Dolomites are beautiful in summer — and even better during the winter. During the snowy months, the mountains — a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site — attract skiers and snowboarders from around the world. One of the many valley towns, Cortina d’Ampezzo, will host the 2026 Winter Olympics . The ski season runs from about December until March, so February is ideal if you want to hit the slopes. About a three-hour drive from the international airport in Venice, the Dolomites border Austria, which is apparent in the language and cuisine.

Where to Stay: Hotels, resorts, home rentals, and condos are available. Alpin Garden in Ortisei is a charming inn with a spa and daily guided ski experiences. La Perla in Corvara offers a variety of rooms and a Michelin-starred restaurant.

February isn’t typically the time of year that many people travel. It’s just after the Christmas season , so people tend to be a little stricter with their budgets, plus, it’s cold at many of the best places to travel, right? Nope, wrong! There are plenty of warm places to visit in February, across every continent (except Antarctica). So, there really is no reason to stay bundled up in a blanket wishing you were on a beach!

February is actually one of my personal favourite times of year to travel. It’s typically quieter than the summer months, but also a great way to find lower costs and get off the beaten path. Plus, after the winter festivities are over, February tends to leave me feeling a bit sick of the cold English weather! So, jetting off somewhere warm seems like a very good idea.

17 Warm Places to Visit in February

Whether you want to explore the warmest islands in Europe, hop across to Asia, or bask on a Caribbean island , here are the 17 best warm places to visit in February.

1. Thailand

Average Temperature : 28°C (82°F)

My first ever trip to Asia began in Thailand and I loved every minute of it. It remains one of my favourite trips of all time to this day and I can’t wait to go back. 

We visited in January, but temperatures in February aren’t that different. You can definitely expect the heat – perhaps with a few tropical showers thrown in – and plenty of opportunity to get a sun tan. It’s also a country with some of the friendliest people I have ever met. It’s not called ‘Land of the Smiles’ for nothing. 

Everyone was so welcoming and happy to help you with anything. It’s also a very affordable destination. The most expensive thing for me was the flight to get there. After that, I don’t think I spent more than the flight cost over the two weeks I was out there, which included hotels, food, and attractions.

Some of the top places to visit in Thailand include the capital of Bangkok with its impressive temples and busy city vibes. I also highly recommend heading to Ao Nang and Krabi for more laid-back mountain vibes and beautiful scenery. The northern city of Chiang Mai is also well worth a visit. Despite being a little cooler than the south, it’s still one of the best warm places to visit in February.

Mexico is a fascinating country. It’s not quite on the same level of budget travel as Thailand, but it’s still much more affordable than most of Europe. Plus, in February, you can expect some of the country’s best weather. 

During our trip to Mexico in February, we travelled from Mexico City, through the Chiapas region in the middle of the country, and down to the coastal Yucatan Peninsula. The whole time we were there, it was blue skies, around 29°C every day and not a drop of rain. 

Mexico is such a varied country to travel to. It has a bit of everything – lush green jungles, beautiful waterfalls, busy cities, cute colonial towns, and white sand beaches. There are also activities here for adventurers, those who want to party, or those who simply want to relax. 

It’s easily one of my top picks for countries to visit in February.

3. The Canary Islands, Spain

If you don’t fancy going long-haul and would rather stay closer to home, the Canary Islands are one of the best warm places to visit in February in Europe. Located closer to Africa than Spain, this archipelago has what is known as the ‘eternal Spring’. 

Bathed in sunlight year-round, the Canaries only see about 25 days of rain each year, including through the winter months. This means they’re a great short-haul option for those living in Europe and a fantastic long-haul choice for those across the pond who want to visit Europe at a cheaper cost but still get fantastic weather. 

There are 8 islands in the Canaries, but the most popular to visit include Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Tenerife, and Fuerteventura. Since the islands are primarily volcanic, there’s lots to do here. You can go hiking, biking, and climbing in the many national parks across the islands, explore the cobbled streets of the traditional towns and villages, and eat plenty of Spanish cuisine. Who can say no to a paella, right?

On top of that, there are lots of great beaches in the Canary Islands. February might not be the best time to go for a swim, but you can definitely paddle in the waves and go for a peaceful walk along the sand.

Average Temperature : 16°C (60°F)

In my opinion, Malta is one of the best winter destinations in Europe and definitely one of the top warm places to visit in February. Perched in the Mediterranean, between Italy and Africa, this little island is a European hidden gem. And there’s so much to do there! We only spent a week on the island, yet it felt like we could’ve easily spent another week at least exploring all the hidden spots and history. 

For those looking to visit Malta in winter, know that it won’t be beach weather. However, it’ll definitely be warmer than most of Europe with temperatures hovering around 15. This makes the perfect weather for exploring the outdoors. 

Malta has a wealth of history from thousand-year-old temples to a cobbled old town that looks like it was plucked out of a medieval TV show. It was actually used during the filming of Game of Thrones, so this isn’t far off the mark! 

There are also lots of great restaurants, beautiful gardens overlooking the ocean, and a fantastic heritage walking trail that I highly recommend. 

Of course, when visiting Malta, you’ve got to take a ferry across the neighbouring Gozo as well. This little island has even more history, including the oldest and most impressive temples on the island, and another cobbled old town.

5. Florida, USA

Average Temperature : 25°C (77°F)

If you’re after one of the warmest destinations to visit in the USA in winter, head down south to Florida. There’s much more to this state than Disney World (although, if you like theme parks, you will love it here). In the winter months, you can expect the temperature to be pretty warm, around 25°C.

A few of the best things to do in Florida (excluding theme parks) include going on a tour of the Everglades National Parks or savouring the laid-back charm of the Florida Keys . Also, be sure to explore the cities, from the lively vibes of Orlando to the neon beach scene in Miami to the artsy vibes in St. Petersburg.

Plus, if you enjoy hitting the shops, it’s a great place to go shopping at the discounted Outlet Malls. You might even find a few lingering January sales!

6. Southern California, USA

Average Temperature :19°C (66°F)

Another toasty destination to visit in February is California. Primarily, the south of the state because places like Yosemite and San Francisco aren’t what I would consider toasty any time of year! However, further south, you’ll find much nicer weather and much less fog, even in the winter months.

The best places to go in February are San Diego, Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles. You can expect mild temperatures, clear skies, and, for some, a gentle coastal breeze.

Whether you’re exploring the trendy neighbourhoods of Los Angeles, taking a scenic drive along the Pacific Coast Highway, or unwinding on the sandy shores of San Diego, February offers a perfect mix of outdoor activities. It’s also the ideal month to explore the outdoors and do a bit of hiking. You won’t be instantly boiling hot the moment you set off! 

The vibrant energy here is contagious. You’ll find yourself immersed in a world of diverse cultures, trendy boutiques, and, some of the best tacos you’ll ever taste. You’ll also find that iconic attractions, from Disneyland to the stunning beaches, are slightly less crowded, allowing you to enjoy it that little bit more.

7. South Africa

If you’re looking for a unique winter destination, South Africa needs to be on your list. Falling in the country’s summer season, South Africa is an amazing winter break if you want to escape the cold. You can expect daily temperatures of around 24-30ºC. It’s also a prime destination for a once-in-a-lifetime trip with so many incredible settings across the country.

In February, it’s best to focus your South Africa itinerary on the southern coast. Here, you’ll be able to take in beautiful spots like sunny Cape Town, the Garden Route and the game reserves in the Eastern Cape. For a truly unforgettable moment, a safari in South Africa is an absolute must and will definitely be a highlight of your trip!

The Eastern Cape is the best place for a February safari as Kruger National Park in the northeast has its hot rainy season at this time of the year. However, the Eastern Cape is no less brilliant.

It’s a year-round safari destination with fantastic reserves that promise a bucket-list winter experience. It’s also where you’ll find Addo Elephant National Park – the country’s third biggest park that’s home to over 600 elephants. If you’re an animal or nature lover, it’s a dream destination to spend the winter months.

8. Dubai, UAE

Dubai sits on the western coast of the UAE in the Arabian Gulf. As the airport is a central hub, you can fly there with most major airlines.

Although it’s very hot and humid in the summer, the winter weather is pleasant. Temperatures usually range from 21ºC (70ºF) to 30ºC (85ºF) in the daytime.

This makes it the perfect time to enjoy Dubai’s gorgeous beaches, stroll around Bluewaters Island, have fun at Motiongate or just laze by the pool. For a view contrasting old and new Dubai, take a trip up Dubai Frame .

Little New Zealand floating about in the South Pacific is an excellent destination to visit in February. Being a southern hemisphere country, summer is in full swing during February, meaning there’s plenty to see and do. 

Fancy spending the coldest month of the year in Europe on the beach? Why not? That’s a Kiwi tradition for most in New Zealand and there are literally hundreds of beaches to explore. Or perhaps you’re up for something more adventurous? Why not go hiking? If so, Angelus Hut is easily one of the country’s most beautiful options.  

For those looking to do something more relaxing, try a beer or wine-tasting tour of one of New Zealand’s numerous award-winning vineyards or breweries.

With temperatures averaging around 25°C, the lovely climate in New Zealand is hot enough to enjoy a swim but not too intense to prevent you from partaking in one of the limitless outdoor activities on offer.

If you’re looking for that tropical getaway head to one of the islands in the south of Vietnam, such as Con Dao. February, with an average temperature of 25°C, is the perfect time to stroll over the pristine beaches and swim in the clearest oceans. 

If you prefer to absorb some culture rather than sea salt, consider heading to Hue, in the middle of Vietnam. Those who visit Vietnam’s Ancient Capital in February will be greeted by pleasant temperatures around 25°C. Making February a great time to immerse yourself in the countless temples and citadels the city has to offer. 

Lastly, for those who aren’t necessarily looking for the sun during their winter holiday, head to the breathtaking mountains of northern Vietnam . Immerse yourself in the culture of some of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minorities. Rent a motorbike, wander colourful markets and stay at local homestays. Don’t forget to pack warmer clothes and prepare yourself for temperatures averaging around 17°C, making February a comfortable month to visit the region. 

Whatever it is you’re after, Vietnam has an option for your next winter holiday.

12. Sri Lanka

From December to March , much of Sri Lanka is warm and dry. This offers picture-perfect beach days, especially along the south and west coasts. As such, February is a great time to visit. You’ll fly into Colombo which is worth a day of sightseeing. But also venture around the country to enjoy the stunning scenery Sri Lanka has to offer.

The south coast of Sri Lanka has an array of places to explore from the charming colonial town of Galle to the sandy beaches of Mirissa and the wildlife of Yala National Park. If surfing is your thing, head to Weligama or Hiriketiya Beach. Otherwise, enjoy swimming in the calmer waters of Jungle Beach. 

In addition to relaxing in the sun on the coast, you can head inland to stay in towns like Kandy, Ella, and Nuwara Eliya via the famous Sri Lankan train journey. The long scenic train route runs about seven hours from Kandy to Ella. But you can opt for a stop in the middle at the quaint town of Nuwara Eliya. 

There are picturesque rolling green hills with tea plantations, majestic waterfalls, and hiking trails to be explored. Keep in mind these towns are at a higher elevation and will be a bit cooler than the sunny south coast. Regardless of these cooler regions, this is still one of the best warm places to visit in February.

Hawaii is one of the most beloved winter getaways in the United States, thanks to its warm temperatures, beautiful beaches and endless outdoor activities.

During winter in Hawaii , you can expect to enjoy highs in the upper 70s and lows in the mid-60s. While the skies tend to be a little rainier than in the summer, there will still be plenty of sunny days to enjoy beach time, snorkelling with Hawaii’s incredible wildlife, and hiking on its jaw-dropping hiking trails.

Hawaii has four main islands that are frequented by visitors, each of which offers different things to do. 

For example, you can watch Big Wave surfers on Oahu’s North Shore take on 30-foot tall waves—an activity you can only do in the wintertime! 

Alternatively, Maui is renowned as being one of the best places to see humpback whales on the planet. Tens of thousands of these majestic creatures migrate from their arctic waters to the island’s warm lagoons to breed and raise their calves. And February is one of the top times to see this. 

As the southernmost island, the Big Island enjoys the warmest and driest weather. This is perfect for hiking in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park or snorkelling through its incredible coral reefs. 

Finally, Kauai is known as the rainiest island, especially in the wintertime. But, it’s an excellent time to see this paradise at its lushest, with rushing waterfalls and fragrant tropical flowers abound. 

14. Kerala, India

If you are looking for an exotic warm place to visit in February, make sure to put Kerala on your list. Kerala is in the south of India. It is a great winter getaway destination as you get sun and warm weather all year round. 

There is so much to explore and the perfect way is to organise an ultimate road trip around Kerala . You can visit the beautiful backwaters of Kerala in Alleppey where you can explore life on the water, stay in a moving houseboat, or indulge in some delicious local cuisine. Things to try include fish curry, Idiyappam which is made with rice flour and served with different curries or the sweet dish Palada Payasam made with rice, milk and sugar. 

Kerala is also known for its cultural activities and is famous for its Kathakali dance and art performances. If you go early you can even see the dramatic makeup being applied by the actors. Or why not head to Munnar to see the famous rolling hills of the tea plantations? 

Munnar is a stunning hill station with beautiful landscapes. As well as tea plantations you can also visit the spice plantations, or visit the Eravikulam National Park and just enjoy the tranquillity around you. Kerala really is one of the best places to visit in February.

Jordan, located on the Arabian Peninsula between Israel and Saudi Arabia, is one of the most visited countries in the world. It is best known for Petra, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, and the Wadi Rum desert, where many Hollywood films were shot. 

February is one of the best times to go to Jordan, particularly for those who love hiking. 

The coldest month in Petra is January with an average temperature of 15°C (58°F). February is slightly warmer, with temperatures around 17°C (62°F), so great for exploring the outdoors.

One of the main advantages of visiting Jordan in winter is that you can enjoy Jordan with fewer crowds. This is especially true for Petra which tends to get very crowded during the main season (March- May , September- November ).  There are many great hiking trails in Petra but the most beautiful and adventurous trail is the back door entrance route to the monastery .

The warmest places in Jordan in Winter are Aqaba (the Jordanian Red-Sea Resort) and the Wadi Rum desert. The average daytime temperature in February in the desert is 23°C (73°F) with a 10-degree drop at night. Wadi Rum desert is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The best way to explore the desert is by 4 or 6-hour 4×4 wheel drive which will include sunset watching. 

16. Singapore

Average Temperature : 30°C (86°F)

Singapore is situated just north of the equator in Southeast Asia, along the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. The average temperature in February is around 28 to 32°C (82 to 89°F), which makes it the perfect location for a winter trip. 

Singapore packs a punch for such a small island country regarding “things to do”. From Sentosa Island to Little India, There’s lots to do in Singapore. Explore the streets of Kampong Glam, Little India and Chinatown, be wowed by the giant trees at Gardens By the Bay or go and wander through the many parks, gardens and hiking trails this tropical island offers.

If you are looking for a new place to travel in February, consider Belize , a small Central American country with a Caribbean feel. It offers so much—beautiful rivers flowing through jungles, fascinating Mayan ruins, and gorgeous reefs within easy reach of relaxed island stays. 

The dry season continues from January through May, so February is a great time to visit.

If you have a week to spare for a visit, consider heading west after arriving at Belize’s international airport. Stay at one of the jungle lodges near the traveller hub town of San Ignacio. Even within the US land borders, there are plenty of warm places to visit. Nearby Mexico and the Caribbean also offer reliable hot weather, golden beaches, and extravagant cocktails to banish thoughts of winter. In the Southern Hemisphere, summer is peaking, from New Zealand to Cambodia . To tick off a true bucket list destination , visit Easter Island. Best warm beaches to visit in February

With chill winds blowing across much of the mainland US, thoughts turn to days spent lazing on golden beaches. Daydream no more. 

1. Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao

• Average temperature: 81°F
• Average hours of daily sun: 9 hours

Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are often lazily grouped as the ABC islands. Despite their shared Dutch influence, each has emerged distinct from the others in many ways. Except perhaps for their consistently flawless beaches.

February is peak Caribbean season with all three islands basking in blue skies and beach temperatures. The main party is found in Aruba, especially as it’s Carnival month. Head for Oranjestad and Palm Beach to join the parades and parties. 

Blessed with more sand than its rockier siblings, Curaçao is the largest island with the most beaches . Find dramatic cliffs, picture-perfect coves, and Caribbean blues at Grote Knip, Klein Knip, and Playa Lagun.

My top pick is Bonaire. The outlier of the trio, it is lesser-visited but has world-beating diving and a glowing reef only feet offshore. Watersports are a part of daily life here and the island’s 400-plus caves make it a spelunker’s utopia.

2. Raglan, New Zealand

• Average temperature: 66°F
• Average hours of daylight: 14 hours

Growing up a surfer, I had a photo of the famed wave known as Raglan on my wall for 15 years. Amazingly, from the moment I first visited, it lived up to my expectations. Warm and inviting yet dramatic and mind-blowing , it’s a landscape that could only exist in New Zealand. 

February is a great time to explore the coastline of this Waikato region on North Island. Daytime temperatures regularly sit in the mid-70s, water temperatures in the mid-60s, and the sun shines and shines. The primary surf break is at Manu Bay , where waves can run down the coast for a thigh-burning 330 yards. If you are a beginner head for the dramatic black sands of nearby Ngarunui Beach.

Surf sated, head into laidback Raglan, the archetypal surf town . Lively bars, great home-cooking restaurants, cool inns, and a healthily eccentric art scene are all just a two-hour drive from Auckland . 

3. Loreto, Mexico

• Average temperature: 64°F
• Average hours of daylight: 12 hours

Take a road trip down the Baja peninsula and you’ll spend a lot of time alone, staring at cactus fields as the miles tick by. A beacon of cool amid the arid landscape, Loreto is one of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos , or Magic Towns. 

Marked for its lovely colonial architecture and rich cultural heritage, its cobbled streets lead you into Mexico of old. The 17th-century Misión de Nuestra Señora de Loreto, pottery stores, and deeply rooted locals can feel from another world. But among them, you’ll also find boutique hotels, delicious family-run restaurants , and a modern buzz.

Offshore is where Loreto really shines. The pristine islands of the Parque Nacional Bahía de Loreto teem with nature. Deserted beaches fringe an ocean that in February is alive with whales drawn there to feed, mate and calve. 

4. Arabian Desert, Saudi Arabia

• Average temperature: 62°F
• Average hours of daily sun: 8 hours

A vast sea of red-hued sand spreads across most of the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabian Desert is home to extreme temperatures and towering dunes, Bedouin culture, and a diverse wildlife habitat. February is winter, when daytime temperatures hover in the mid-70s and conditions are more agreeable . 

A few hours southwest of Riyadh , Al Kharrarah National Park is a playground for adventure. Follow in the tracks of ancient Egyptians who would surf and shift cargo on sandboards and sleds. Local guides can take you deep into the desert to virgin dunes, where you’ll be the first to lay your line in the sand.

If you’re lucky, winter rainfall will transform the area into a fleeting oasis. Water surging down steep dunes creates a temporary waterfall and the Lake of Liquid Light , which is deep enough to swim in. For a time at least, it may just be the best beach in the world.

Best warm places to visit in the US in February

Happily, there are plenty of locations in the US that enjoy winter sun, with temperatures warm enough to make the most of outside.

5. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

• Average temperature: 69°F

Once the East Coast go-to for raucous spring breakers, Fort Lauderdale has grown up. Today it’s renowned for beaches and boating canals, luxury shopping, and fine dining. And with the weather in Florida in February pushing average high temperatures into the late 70s, it’s become a premium winter vacation destination .

With the sun shining, head straight for Florida’s 23 miles of golden sand beaches . Lay out under swaying palms and blue skies at Las Olas Beach, in the heart of the action. Behind you, Las Olas Boulevard reaches like an artery through the canals and on into the city.

Hop on a riverboat to cruise the canals while sipping Champagne and disembark amid the chic boutiques and shiny hotels flanking Las Olas Boulevard. To end your day gorge at the many sea-to-table restaurants, overflowing with fresh seafood and Floribbean flair .

6. O‘ahu, Hawai‘i

• Average temperature: 65°F

Tropical and temperate O‘ahu offers a blissfully warm February vacation. The natural Hawai‘in entry point from mainland US, its skies are clear and its seas sparkle. Average high temperatures don’t drop below 70, which means the beaches and hiking trails are primed and ready .  

Kick off a stay in the capital, Honolulu . Splicing the chaos of a metropolis with island culture in an awe-inspiring location, it’s at once hectic and laid back. O‘ahu really shines in the wilds, though. Sunrise has never looked better than from the highs of the Makapu‘u Lighthouse Trail , one of more than 200 crisscrossing the island.

Then of course, there are the beaches. Waikiki needs no introduction but it’s the infamous North Shore that steals the show. Home to some of the world’s best waves (for surfers and spectators alike), winter is when the big swells hit. Pull up a towel, sit back and enjoy the show. 

7. Tucson, Arizona

• Average temperature: 55°F

Okay, an average of 55 doesn’t scream warm weather. But with average highs of 69 and little to no rain, Tucson is something of a dream in February. Especially if you love to hike.

Arizona’s second city is engulfed in the enormity of nature. Pass its borders in any direction and you’ll soon find yourself in alien landscapes. Sabino Canyons are the quick and easy option for a scenic stroll. My pick, however, is an hour south amid the desolate grandeur of Elephant Head . 

A huge granite peak traversed by the well-worn East Ridge trail , its summit delivers eye-watering views over the Santa Rita Mountains to the east. Start from Chino Canyon for a challenging trek that takes in the ruins of Old Elephant Head Mill and the abandoned Quantrell Mine. At its peak, the bizarre but brilliant Elephant Shrine is framed by Baboquivari Peak in the distance. Magic.

Best warm places to visit in February around the world

If distance is no object, the world opens up in February with some extraordinary destinations at their finest. Here are three of my favorite and far-flung warm places to visit in February. 

8. Easter Island, Chile

• Average temperature: 75°F
• Average hours of daylight: 13 hours

Don’t mind a long-haul trip ? Deep in the heart of the South Pacific, Easter Island basks in balmy summer temperatures in February. It’s a lovely time to step out of the rat race and immerse yourself in one of the world’s most spellbinding islands.

Your first stop should be the moai statues , 887 giant rock sculptures better known as the Easter Island heads. Trek the Ara O Te Moai ancestral trail where you’ll find fallen heads and on the slopes of Rano Raraku volcano, the quarry they were mined from. Seeing them in place is made only more fascinating by the fact no one knows how the Rapanui people got them there.

For a unique experience, join a guided dive to see the submerged moai near the town of Hanga Roa. There’s excellent diving, snorkeling, and surfing around the coast, served by among others, the lovely white-sand beach at Anakena.  

9. Conil de la Frontera, Spain

• Average temperature: 53°F
• Average hours of daylight: 11 hours

In Andalucía, Spain’s far south, the beaches are wilder and the cities more historic. Cádiz , Europe’s oldest, is a window into 3,000 years of history laid open for exploration. Farther south still, the town of Conil tumbles down cliffs to the beach like a white wave breaking into the Atlantic.

It’s become my default European beach vacation because it’s a fabulous place to soak up the sun, even in winter. February temperatures aren’t scorching hot, but with typically bright sunny days it always feels warmer. 

Instead of sunbathing, get involved. Nearby El Palmar is a miles-long surf mecca with a thriving and friendly beachfront community. Surf schools and camps, buzzing bars with built-in skate ramps, and local ‘cervecerias’ serving 2€ cañas and outrageously good tapas. And there are few better ways than to finish a day with a sunset horseback ride through the surf.

10. Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Yet to garner the attention and investment of other Southeast Asian metropolises like Bangkok and Hanoi , Cambodia’s capital is a rough diamond. In February it swelters under blue skies, yet rainfall and humidity are at their lowest .

Any visit must acknowledge the atrocities of Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge. A trip to Choeung Ek , known as the Killing Fields, is informative and deeply moving. It’s my choice over the Tuol Sleng Museum, which is almost unbearable in its stark grimness. 

But Phnom Penh is so much more than this tragic history. Follow in the footsteps of royalty, war reporters, and Hollywood icons with a stay at the historic Raffles Hotel Le Royal . Dine on delicious Khmer cuisine (but trust me, skip the fried tarantula) at Romdeng restaurant . A non-profit, the waiters are all impoverished Cambodian youths getting training in hospitality. 

And don’t miss the mighty Mekong , my favorite river, alive with life of every kind. Southeast Asia’s great artery, extend your trip with a three-day cruise along it into Vietnam and wonderful Ho Chi Minh City .

Mexico and many islands of the Caribbean are excellent choices for a hot, budget vacation from the US in February. February might mark the month of romance with Valentine's Day, but the UK winter season is still very much ongoing. If there's ever a time to escape the cold, dark days and lift new year spirits, this is it. From summer sun in South America and culture hopping in Asia , to chic city breaks in Paris or Copenhagen , here we round up the best places to visit in February 2024. Tulum, Mexico

Over the past decade, this corner of Mexico ’s Caribbean coastline has become a bucket list staple for influencers and wellness enthusiasts. As a result, finding your own white-sand beach for the afternoon is a little tricky, but with miles of pristine shore and crystal-clear waters, that’s the epitome of a first-world problem. It’s like Tulum was designed for social media feeds. Beauty spots are at every turn, while the clever minds behind the design of the sleek hotels, bars and restaurants here have tapped into the pockets of aesthetes and lovers of all things boho-chic. History buffs head to the mysterious archaeological sites and Mayan ruins slightly inland, while many others opt to simply soak up the dry season’s rays poolside or in the glitzy beach clubs.

Where to stay: Embrace jungle living at Hotel Bardo . Contemporary luxury is rooted in wellness, and regular rituals include sound healing ceremonies and yoga classes. It’s an adults-only oasis where sun-kissed travellers emerge from loft-style villas in search of fruit platters and punchy cocktails by the swimming pool.

Cairo, Egypt

The ancient city of Cairo is a unique, fascinating city everyone should experience once in their lifetime. However, sightseeing isn’t much fun in the blistering summer heat when temperatures exceed 40C. Visiting in February means you’re more likely to stick to the bucket list itinerary and explore elsewhere while you’re at it. Stand before the Grand Pyramids of Giza, explore the sandy desert scape by camel, and wile away the hours in the many museums.

Where to stay: Rest tired toes at the Waldorf Astoria Cairo Heliopolis . The sprawling hotel opened its doors at the end of 2023, and there are 252 rooms and suites to choose from. Make time for afternoon tea in the opulent Peacock Lounge, and sip chilled rosé at Le Jardin Pool Bar before heading to supper in the sleek Mediterranean brasserie.

Never turn down a trip to the Maldives , even in monsoon season (May to November). But if you can choose, February is one of the best months of all to go – when the skies are clear and blue, the days long, dry and not too humid, and the sunshine turns the water a luminous turquoise that’s hard to tear your gaze from. The waters are clear for snorkelling and diving and this is the time of year to see manta rays, tiger sharks and whales sharks. Check the eco-credentials of a resort before you book: many Maldives resorts have their in-house marine biologists and conservationists leading underwater and wildlife conservation initiatives; gardens where they can grow vegetables to supply their restaurants ; are plastic-free or, like Kudadoo, use only solar power.

Where to stay: There are dozens of out-of-this-world Maldives hotels ; the thing is to find the castaway fantasy that’s right for you, whether you want haute cuisine or high-octane activities, knock-out design or lo-fi Crusoe chic. For a bit of everything, we love Gili Lankanfushi , where all villas sit stilted above one of the most beautiful lagoons in the country. For a cool newcomer, Patina Maldives offers hi-tech therapies at its unique Flow Spa, while its collection of bars and restaurants are all exceptional.

Courchevel, France

Courchevel is the superstar ski resort of the French Alps. Of its four villages, Courchevel 1850 is the highest, biggest and glitziest, drawing a jet-set crowd with its Michelin-star restaurants , super-smart chalets and hotels, posh aprés ski – oh yes, and its abundance of snowy slopes for all levels, on-piste and off, with a long season and 230 snow cannons to guarantee good snow. It’s brilliant for superstar and beginner skiers alike, so makes a great option for the February half term ; families may prefer the slightly less high-glamour vibe of 1650.

Where to stay: Ski-in ski-out  Portetta  in Courchevel Moriond (1650) is a lovely rustic-chic alpine retreat. There are lots of dark wood and log fires, a great spa (Bamford facials, double treatment rooms, gym, hammam), an Angela Hartnett Italian-influenced mountain restaurant, and 44 rooms including six loft duplexes and various family options with extra bunk rooms. If you're travelling in a group, the beautiful  Chalet Montanum  sleeps nine and offers a true ski-in, ski-out experience – there's slope access from the end of the drive.

Cotswolds, United Kingdom

If there’s one thing that can make a British winter appealing, it’s the thought of getting cosy in the Cotswolds . Amid a quintessentially English landscape, publicans pull artisan ales, sipped by roaring fires. Frosty walks ramble past country manors and up green hills topped with Iron Age forts. But while its home to some of the most beautiful villages in the UK , this isn’t back-in-time England. Clued-in movers and shakers have helped sow an ultra-modern crop of Michelin-starred restaurants in the Cotswolds between the organic spacs, antiques stores and tea rooms. Naturally, rates and reservations are more manageable in winter. Two of the best hotels in the Cotswolds that particularly embody contemporary village living: Soho Farmhouse (copper bathtubs; bottled Negronis), and Lady Bamford’s trailblazing Daylesford farm and estate, where the organic ethos extends to everything from the farm shop and pub to wellness treatments.

Where to stay: The Lygon Arms , located in a 16th-century coaching inn in the middle of Broadway Village. The interiors are of the traditional countryside kind and the four courtyard rooms are particularly spacious. For a private stay, takeover this quaint and cosy thatched cottage in Kingham , one of our favourite Airbnbs in the Cotwolds .

Paris, France

The City of Love should be an obvious pick in February, but potential suitors are all-too-often put off by the weather. Très grosse erreur . Anyone who knows the French knows they scarper tout de suite in summer, shuttering restaurants, frustrating foreigners and not giving a tiny French fig. Come instead in winter, when everything’s open, visitors are fewer, reservations easier and rates lower. All the best stuff is indoors anyway: cute, candle-lit bistros; echoey art museums; bo-bo (bourgeois-boho) bars. South Pigalle – or SoPo – still sizzles as one of Paris ’s hottest spots, where the best table is at Bouillon Pigalle. The queue around the block is worth it – three-course meals with drinks here can cost less than €25, practically unheard of within the list of the best restaurants in Paris .

Where to stay: Parisians in the know will recommend Château Voltaire , once the showroom for cult fashion label Zadig & Voltaire and now a super chic bolthole on the rue Saint-Roch. In terms of Paris hotels with a great location, it's hard to beat La Réserve which faces the Grand Palais and, at a slightly greater distance, the Eiffel Tower, overlooks the Champs-Elysées and is only a few doors down from the presidential palace. For Eiffel Tower views, take over The Margaux , a three-bedroom Airbnb apartment on the Left Bank.

Swap the white sludge on your doorstep for a bright white beach in the Bahamas . Those in the know head for the Caribbean islands in sleepy February, just as the December holiday crowds have dispersed and before the raucous spring breakers descend in March, for the pristine sands, laidback lifestyle and 18th-century streets tinged with the scent of frangipani. Take advantage of the relative quiet with a barefoot stroll across Pink Sands beach, consider a diving class after a long lunch on Harbour Island or while away the afternoon with a mojito and a novel – what's the rush?

Where to stay: Paradise Island is home to the most famous retreat in the Bahamas, One&Only Ocean Club , a 106-room resort with a neighbouring championship golf course, and a near-perfect, alabaster-white beach

Ibiza, Spain

Winter on the White Isle isn’t as bonkers as it sounds. It’s the best time to experience Ibiza as the locals know it – almond trees flush pink-white with blossom; beach bars and pavement cafés are laid-back not lairy; and the tapas and drinks come cheap. Bargain isn’t a word too often associated with this Balearic, but without the club crowds, proprietors look to lure customers with deals. During winter nights, island restaurants participate in Gastrojueves – Gastro Thursdays – where meals are offered half-price. Craving a blowout? Small towns across Ibiza celebrate Carnival with parades early in the month; superclubs such as Pacha throw the after-parties. Really, though, it’s all about taking time to soak up the quieter side of Ibiza. Ibiza’s bohemian north is the best place to discover a more peaceful side to the island, and one of the smartest experiences here is found at Ibiza Horse Valley . This sanctuary rehabilitates mistreated animals and reintroduces them to riding, offering horseback trips to the White Isle’s untouched forest, remote mountaintops and secret beaches .

Where to stay: The address to know about is OKU Ibiza , a laid-back luxury retreat with two serene swimming pools, wabi-sabi-inspired decor and regular yoga sessions. Another option is Nobu Ibiza Bay in Talamanca, all soothing white bedrooms, fabulous sea views and mostly crowd-free at this time of year. This little slice of Central America packs a powerful punch. With verdant rainforests and towering volcanoes sitting beside vibrant cities, explorers are spoiled for choice. You can trek through rugged Tenorio National Park, frolic in Arenal's secret waterfalls and finish the day dining on French fusion in San José. Dive into the action in Costa Rica in February, just as prices dip after peak tourist season. The rainforests are still lush (monsoon season ends in December ) and the coconut-strewn beaches of Puerto Viejo as idyllic as ever.

Where to stay: The Harmony Hotel (pictured) in Nosara, with daily classes (yoga on the beach, vinyasa body dance), one-off retreats, a vegetarian juice bar, and a kidney-bean-shaped pool with white-faced monkeys swinging from the nearby trees. A seven-and-a-half-hour flight transports you to another place and time – one of heat and spice, epic landscapes and exotic otherness – in this most welcoming country of the Arabian Peninsula. Its topography is diverse and dramatic, with adventures of many kinds: go driving over dunes and diving in the marine-rich waters off the Musandam Peninsula; stay at remote Bedouin camps or polished-luxury resorts from desert to beach. February is the last month of winter in Oman , which means it’s still bearably hot rather than unbearably hot.

Where to stay: In a hard-to-reach cove surrounded by mountains, Six Senses Zighy Bay is one of the country’s original five-star retreats, and for many, still the best hotel in Oman . Its natural adobe casitas are built in harmony with the surrounding desert stone, the restaurants and spa are superb, the creamy-sand beach is footprint-free sublime, and staff can arrange the kind of adventures that are never forgotten. Another impressive option is Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort , a wilderness retreat set on the rim of a beautiful canyon. Mornings are ushered in with dawn yoga while evenings are spent smoking shisha under the stars.

New Orleans, USA

“I don't want realism. I want magic,” cooed Blanche DuBois in Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire , an enduring love letter to this romantic, crumbling city. Mardi Gras certainly delivers on that. The iconic two-week carnival sees daily parades and masquerade balls transform New Orleans into a riotous party town. Don a mask, discard your inhibitions and wander the city in mystical torchlight. After the festivities, crawl out of bed for a meal of gumbo over cheese grits and stroll through the cobblestone alleyways of the French Quarter to a soundtrack of Otis Redding and Aretha Franklin. Without the glittering krewes the quaint streets are almost unrecognisable - the discarded beads that litter the pavement act as the only proof that you're in the same place.

Where to stay: W French Quarter , a contemporary urban oasis, with small courtyard pool, bar and Miami-style cabanas; and rooms are in a former sugar mill with grey shutters.

Venice, Italy

February is carnival time in Venice , which makes it either the very best time to come, or the worst. Noblemen clink swords in St Mark's Square, courtesans cloaked in red silk drift down the Grand Canal on plumed gondolas, and gilded masks allow royalty to walk freely among the commoners. What seems like a Canaletto painting comes to life every year when revellers gather for three weeks of masked debauchery. Those seeking the quiet charms of the floating city will be disappointed, but if you dare to join the huddled masses you'll be rewarded with an otherworldly experience. You can flaunt your finery on the Rialto, dance the quadrilles at the Doge's ball and wake up the next morning in a luxurious four-poster bed in your very own Venetian palace wondering if it was all a dream.

Where to stay: Palazzo Cristo , a renovated 16th-century house with original exposed timber beams, Carrara marble, oak parquet flooring and canopy beds, all done in a pared-back palette, a million miles from the usual gilded ceilings and Murano-glass extravagance. A more recent addition to St. Mark's Square is Ca'di Dio , where the interiors of the 66-room hotel are molto chic, and many enjoy views of the lagoon. For a stay that feels like a best kept secret, this Airbnb apartment 's canal-side balcony makes it one of the most romantic Airbnbs in Europe. Cartagena, Colombia

Temperature in February: 31°C high; 24°C low Season: dry Travel time from UK: 14 hours 40 minutes Time difference: GMT -5

A riotous clash of Spanish, Latin and Caribbean cultures, the Colombian seaside city is a feast for the senses, with corn-yellow colonial villas and palm-dotted plazas, citrus-kissed ceviche and potent rum cocktails. True, old Cartagena ’s picturesque romance has turned it into a well-known destination. But the locals in its Getsemani neighbourhood still cling to artsy authenticity: streets here belong to bright murals and vagabond musicians, Champeta dance clubs (Afro-Caribbean beats meet salsa) and hip restaurants (find Di Silvio Trattoria’s thin-crust pizzas in a former soap factory). Ready to dial it down? Rent a boat for the one-hour ride to the Rosario Islands, where simple beach shacks pour Mojitos into coconuts on peaceful, powder-soft beaches. February sea breezes take the edge off summer’s humidity.

Where to stay: Casa San Agustin is the top boutique hotel in the old walled city. Three 18th-century houses knocked into one with a pool in the courtyard and an upstairs library has deep armchairs and an honesty bar.

Finnish Lapland

Temperature in February: -6°C high; -13°C low Season: winter Travel time from UK: 5 hours 20 minutes Time difference: GMT +2

February in Finnish Lapland might be bracing, but there’s plenty going on here that’s hot. How about hopping aboard the world’s only sauna gondola – a wooden cable car that treats passengers to a steamy ride over the slopes of Ylläs Ski Resort? Or working up a sweat by fat-biking across Ylläs National Park’s stark-white scenery (the thick treads help plucky cyclists pedal in deep snow). Of course, Christmas is high season here, but conditions are every bit as romantic in February, without the sky-high prices or crowds. Northern Lights stalkers also have a good chance of spotting those elusive, swirling illuminations – perhaps best viewed from the Aurora Domes at Harriniva, where igloo-like tents are fitted out with a transparent wall, wood burner and Champagne. Experiences with the Indigenous Sami people of Lapland are becoming ever more popular, but be sure your operator is providing a genuine connection with their culture (rather than a ‘show’). Done right, this kind of tourism helps boost a local economy that can only rely on a lucrative revenue stream – tourism – a few months of the year. Magnetic North Travel , for example, organises time with genuine reindeer herders and their families, so you get a real sense of their way of life.

Where to stay: Hotel & Igloo Village Kakslauttanen . A short drive from Saariselkä, these glass igloos are fabulous. There's an ice gallery, ice restaurant and an ice chapel for weddings.

Kerala, India

If you're dreaming of drifting down Kerala 's tranquil backwaters in relative solitude, wait until February. The tail end of peak season sees low humidity, practically no rain and fewer tour groups to disturb your zen-like state of mind. Whether you prefer to hide away on an elegant houseboat or enjoy southern hospitality at a local homestay, it's impossible not to fall for this state's easygoing charm. Spend your evenings lingering over delicious South Indian thalis, exploring the meandering Dutch canals of Cochin and lazing on Varkala's deserted beaches. Hiring a houseboat to explore the backwaters is undoubtedly a magical experience, but the popularity of the practice has led to some less-than-honourable operations that cut corners and pollute the water. Be sure to research the eco credentials of who you’re going with, and consider combining a houseboat tour with a homestay, which keeps your money within the communities you’re visiting.

Where to stay: If you're not on the backwaters, take over one of the many nearby homestays like Anugraha . The stylish two-bedroom heritage home was restored by former Architectural Digest India editor Manju Sara Rajan.

Antarctica

February is summertime in the Antarctic. Temperatures can soar as high as slightly above freezing, it’s the optimum time to cross the Antarctic Circle, and fluffy baby penguins are toddling around making hay while the sun shines – for up to 24 hours a day. It’s one of the best months to see the extraordinary white icescapes against blue skies, and spot whales – humpbacks minke, orca – gliding below on Zodiac trips.

How to do it: Adventure company Pelorus has the truly extraordinary 10-night ‘Shackleton’s Antarctica’, following in the footsteps of the polar explorer – climbing, abseiling, hiking, ice-walking and sailing aboard sleek superyacht La Datcha.

Bahia, Brazil

It’s carnival time in Brazil – but it’s not only Rio de Janeiro that brings the party. Salvador, capital of Bahía – the north-eastern state and birthplace of Afro-Brazilian culture – hosts bigger, longer and louder festivities. Drumming troupes thunder through the streets playing the region’s signature axé music: a rousing fusion of reggae, merengue and salsa. And while the Sambadrome is the base for carnival activities in Rio, in Salvador it’s the whole city. Caipirinha-weary revellers can recover with a stint at any one of Bahía’s golden, jungle-fringed sands along its 1,000km-long coast. Beach town Trancoso is where Brazilians go on holiday: it’s a languid, curiously hippie-glam mix of billionaires and bohemians.

Where to stay: Uxua Casa Hotel & Spa is not just a great sustainable stay but also a top stay in general. A ramshackle façade disguises the beloved hotel, where ten beautiful houses are set among high-growing gardens. There's a spa and a pool lined with green aventurine stones.

Senegal has always danced to its own beat – usually the beat of a booming sabar drum – and attracts adventurers with its delta wildlife, spicy street food and thriving contemporary art scene. Gloriously golden beaches have also turned it into an unexpected surfing hotspot and February is the best time to catch some big waves. While it's tropical and hot all year round, this month sees no rain, totally bearable heat and eight hours of sunshine a day – your typical Senegalese winter. Even a short trip guarantees life-changing experiences.

Where to stay: Sobo Badé hotel in Toubab Dialaw is an utterly serene stay on the water.

Nowhere is the world quite so multi-dimensionally mindblowing, so humbling in its majesty, as Chile . It’s a vast land of two time zones and epic proportions – towering volcanoes, endless deserts, dramatic mountains reflected in pristine glacial lakes. Its clear skies and great uninhabited expanses – Patagonia , Atacama , the Andes – make the night sky an awesome spectacle like no other place on earth. February is the best month for stargazing and, as the last month of summer, it’s also still warm enough for walking, horseriding and wild swimming in the staggeringly beautiful Torres del Paine and other national parks .

Where to stay: Explora lodges are contemporary, low-slung and gloriously miles from anywhere, in Torres Del Paine , Patagonia National Park , Easter Island and Atacama .

Copenhagen, Denmark

Home of hygge, layering up is all part of the fun in the undisputed capital of Scandi-cool . The Danes’ design prowess has lately seen the city popularised as a hipster dreamland, but it’s been fabulous far longer than beanie-clad bicyclists have been on Instagram: leading-edge visual arts, high Nordic cooking and fancy coffee are all in the Danish DNA.

Where to stay: Steep yourself in Copenhagen cool at Design Hotel digs Nobis , where contemporary interiors have reinvigorated the former Royal Danish Conservatory of Music, restaurant Niels does frilly things with local, seasonal ingredients, and there’s a traditional sauna to stave off the chill. We also like Hotel Danmark , where bedrooms are styled in a hipster-spartan style, painted deep, inky forest-green with contemporary Danish designs – nab a room on the sixth floor for views of the Tivoli fireworks on a summer’s evening.

Following the Covid pandemic and Sri Lanka's political troubles, tourism to the country has greatly suffered. More recently the country's Tourism Ministry and government have taken many initiatives to revive the industry. And while the foreign office recommends exercising caution, travel to Sri Lanka is allowed. It may also even help to make a difference. According to The Diplomat , "economic analysts are of the view that, if there is an increase in tourist inflows, it could have a positive impact on pulling the nation out of its current economic crisis." If you're up for the adventure, the best place to begin is in the historic capital Colombo, then head down the coast to the colonial town of Galle, sampling some mouth-watering seafood along the way.

Along with the popular Maine sea salt, plain and other everyday flavors, Scratch has a daily special bagel. There’s honeyed rosemary on Wednesday and jalapeno cheddar on Thursday. Scratch is also famous, at least to locals, for its P-Cheese spread. It’s a pimento cheese recipe made with cheddar, mayo, roasted red peppers and seasoning and was passed down to co-owner and head baker Allison Reid by her grandmother, Mern.

THE MAINE BAGEL

The Maine Bagel is a drive-thru with several breakfast and other kinds of sandwiches available. With a bagel list that features egg and bialy among the standards, the family-owned spot is the perfect place to stop on your way to Pine Point Beach. The Maine Bagel really shines with a dozen kinds of cream cheese spreads, including raisin-walnut, lox, strawberry, cranberry-nut and bacon-chive.

THE WORKS CAFE

The Works Cafe is an institution on the edge of the Portland’s Old Port. It opened in 1990 as Bagel Works before it changed its name in 2002. The original shop in this regional chain opened in Manchester, Vermont, in 1988, and there are 11 locations around New England, though just the one in Maine. Gone are the ’90s-era banana-walnut bagels and cold pizza cream cheese, but The Works Cafe is still a reliable place to grab a salt, multigrain or cinnamon raisin bagel, among others. The menu also has bowls, sandwiches and smoothies.
