Its beautiful capital, Heraklion Town, is one of the busiest cities in Crete. In the Heraklion region, you will find two of the most important Crete monuments: Knossos Palace & Phaistos Palace . Being over 20,000 square meters big, the Minoan Palace of Knossos is the largest of all Minoan palatial structures. Cruise ships docking in Heraklion, Crete, primarily use the Heraklion Port, which is one of the largest in the Mediterranean. This port is well-equipped to handle several large cruise ships at a time and is located conveniently close to the city center, offering easy access to Heraklion’s main attractions.

The disembarkation process in Heraklion, as in most ports, involves a few key steps:

Clearance Procedures: Upon arrival, the ship’s crew must complete port and customs clearances. Passengers usually wait on board until these formalities are completed.

Disembarkation: The disembarkation process is fairly straight forward with passengers disembarking in groups according to the ship’s schedule or their booked shore excursions. Most shipped tie up to the dock and passengers can walk right off.

Transport and Tours: Just outside the cruise terminal, passengers will find various transportation options, including taxis, buses, and sometimes shuttle services provided by the cruise line or local operators.

Public Buses : Heraklion has an extensive public bus system that connects the city center with the airport, port, nearby beaches, and other towns across Crete. Buses are a cost-effective way to travel, especially for longer distances outside of the city.

Taxis : Taxis are readily available in Heraklion and can be a convenient way to move around, especially if you’re traveling in a group or with lots of luggage. Some of them may be happy to say with you the whole day and proudly show you around their town. Always agree on the fare before starting your journey or ensure the meter is running.

Car Rentals : Renting a car will give you the flexibility to explore Heraklion and the surrounding areas at your own pace. Crete has many beautiful places that are easier to access with a car. Driving in Crete is fairly easy if you stick to the main roads and highways. There are some great road trips to enjoy, especially if you can stay a week or two!

Bicycles and Scooters : For short distances, renting a bicycle or a scooter can be a fun and efficient way to get around. This option offers greater flexibility and the ability to explore off-the-beaten-path areas.

Hop-On Hop-Off Tour Buses : Catching the red HOHO bus is a good way to see the city’s main attractions, allowing you to explore the sights at your own pace with various stops that you can visit. 

One Day in Heraklion Activities

It is likely your cruise will offer several tours that you can do. This can be easy and convenient as you simply follow the instructions of the Guide or Activities Director and join the rest of the tour.

The downside to these tours is they are often more expensive than doing them independently, and they usually result in large crowds of people all descending on the same attractions at the same time. It also means you will be bound to the times dictated by the tour which may be at a slower pace than you would like, or perhaps too rushed.

As an alternative you can book some tours direct and these are the ones on offer that we think are the best value and the most enjoyable. Be sure to check the start and finish times to ensure they work with your ships schedule!

Knossos Palace Skip-the-line guided tour

The most important archaeological site in Crete and one of the most famous across the country if the Palace of Knossos.

First erected around 2000 BC in 1700 BC, a catastrophic earthquake destroyed the Palace and a new one was built immediately, the most monumental of all. For over 300 years it represented the pre-eminent center of power in Bronze Age Crete and was an imposing complex with significant architectural innovations, splendid frescoes, hundreds of rooms across its four stories, impressive storage facilities & engineering, specialized workshops, and spacious courts hosting ceremonies and feasts.

It was the throne of King Minos and home to the Minotaur, who lived in its dungeons.

With this tour you will need to catch a taxi from the port but if you do it quickly you will beat the hundreds of cruise ship passengers who arrive by bus.

One Day in Crete Itinerary – General

If you would like to city and surrounds at your own pace, this is what we suggest to maximize your one day in Heraklion.

8 am –  Get to the Palace of Knossos as soon as it opens and before all the other cruise ship passengers descend.

10 am – Visit Heraklion Archaeological Museum and nearby Morosini Fountain and the Church of Agios Titos.

12noon – Cretan wine is considered to be some of the best in Greece. Drive or do a tour up to wine country, less than 30 minutes from the Port. We highly recommend visiting Douloufakis Winery and Lyrarakis Winery and Tasting Room which are quite close together.

3 pm – Stop on the way back for a delicious lunch at Koukounari , one of the most authentic places on the island and hugely popular with locals.

5 pm – Explore Heraklion city. Wander the maze of streets around the harbour and the Venetian Fort. There is some good shopping to be found and very affordable too!

7 pm – If you are still in port in the evening try and have dinner at Peskesi , which is a national institution on the island.

9 pm – return to Ship

One Day Itinerary in Heraklion for families

9 am – Get the Palace and the Archaeological Museum out of the way before it gets too hot and crowded( do the Museum after the Palace)

11 am – Visit the Natural History Museum of Crete and/or the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology . Yes, it’s a lot of museums but families really do love these two!

1 pm – Head to a nearby beach. Amnissos Beach is only 10 minutes by taxi and is a designated ‘blue flag’ beach right behind the airport, with Arena Beach a little further than that. There are lots of bars, cafes, toilets, and sunbeds for hire. Active families may like to head out to Karteros Canyon which has lots of walking and hiking trails and is home to many herds of sheep, goats, and other animals.

5 pm – Explore the area around the harbour, the Rocca a Mare Fort, and perhaps a bit of shopping.

Have dinner at child-friendly places such as Lucky’s Souvlaki, Mama’s Restaurant, Cacio e Pepe and Avocado.

8- 9 pm  – return to ship or board ferry

Beaches in Heraklion

Crete has some of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. On the north and south coast of the island, you will find stunning beaches that are easily accessible from the city of Heraklion. Most of the beaches have amenities like umbrellas, sunbeds and cafes, while some are more secluded and quiet. 

On the north coast of Crete, we suggest the following beaches for your holidays in Heraklion:

• Agia Pelagia : this is the beach next to the village of Agia Pelagia. It has coarse sand and turquoise waters, as well as bars and cafes, which are flooded with young people when night falls.
• Lygaria : it’s a beautiful popular beach with coarse sand and calm turquoise waters. It has amenities like umbrellas, sunbeds, cafes, tavernas, water sports facilities and a diving school.
• Potamos (river): this is a charming beach with sand and crystal-clear waters near Malia. The beach offers amenities for visitors, but it is quieter and calmer than the beach of Malia.
• Psaromoura : it's a pebble beach with crystal blue waters. It has a canteen and a big trademark rock that shelters it from the waves.
• Limanakia Sarantari (small ports of Sarantari): this is a series of coves that have beautiful glassy waters and are sheltered from the wind.

Tip : don’t miss the opportunity to visit the islet of Dia and swim in the magical waters of Agios Georgios and Panagia. 

The southern part of Crete is full of impressive beaches overlooking the Libyan Sea . Ferryhopper recommends that you visit: 

• Matala : this is one of the most famous beaches in Crete. It has fine sand and deep crystal-clear waters and is known for its man-made caves that have been cut into the rock. It has amenities such as umbrellas, showers, lifeguards, beach volleyball courts, snack bars, restaurants, bars and water sports infrastructure. A large part of the beach has tamarisks that offer their shade to visitors.
• Agiofarago : this beach is accessible either by boat or with a 30-minute hike in the gorge of the same name. The beach is beautiful, with fine pebbles, crystal-clear waters and imposing rocks.
• Aspes : this lovely small beach with black sand is accessible only by boat. High cliffs with caves and turquoise waters complete the gorgeous scenery.
• Listis : it is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Crete. It has sand and relatively shallow waters and gathers a lot of people. The beach stands out for its large rocks, which are located inside and next to the sea and are ideal for dives! Keep in mind that the beach has no umbrellas or other amenities.
• Agios Nikitas : to reach the beach, you have to go down 230 steps from the monastery of the same name. The beach is beautiful, with pebbles and crystal-clear turquoise waters.
• Komos : this is a beach that offers a lot of amenities, such as umbrellas, sunbeds, a lifeguard, showers and a canteen. It has tamarisk trees and dunes, which are full of beautiful white sand lilies!
• Kaminaki : amazing but difficult to reach, this beach is accessible mainly by boat. It has gray pebbles and crystal-clear waters, and is ideal for seclusion.
• Kokkini Ammos (red sand): this is a stunning secluded beach with beautiful red sand and turquoise waters. You can reach it by hiking (15-25 minutes) or by boat. Keep in mind that the sea gets rough when a west wind blows.

Sightseeing and activities in Heraklion

Heraklion has a rich history and is full of impressive sights , monuments, neighborhoods and museums worth discovering. We suggest you take a walk from Liontarion Square to the old port, where the Venetian fortress stands majestically next to sailing and fishing boats.

Nightlife in Heraklion

Heraklion has a great public transport system and the bus station is 10 minutes away from the port. The airport of Heraklion is about 5 km from the center and it is accessible either by bus (lines 1 and 78) or by taxi . Where is Heraklion Port?

Heraklio , home to Greece’s third busiest port, serves about two million passengers annually. Situated on Crete’s north coast, it lies 130 km east of Chania , 75 km east of Rethymno , 60 km west of Elounda , and 3 km west of Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport (code HER). Athens, Greece’s capital, is 340 km northeast of Heraklio and accessible by a 7-13 hour ferry ride. The closest island to Heraklion Port, Santorini, is a 2-3 hour ferry journey away. Heraklion Ferry Port Transportation Heraklion Port Buses Bus Station A in Heraklion. It’s easy to get to or from Heraklion Port by bus, but the bus station (A or B) and type of bus you’ll use (blue/local or green/intercity) will vary: Heraklion Bus Station A , also called the Port Bus Station, is located very near the ferry port (an easy 6-minute walk down and across the street). Station A serves green intercity buses with routes along the northeast coast (Hersonissos, Archanes, Sitia, Agios Nikolaos, Lassithi Plateau), Chania , and Rethymno , as well as connecting buses to Imbros, Sfakia, Kastelli and other places in west and south-west Crete. • KTEL regional bus website Blue local buses to the Heraklion Airport , ancient Knossos , the city of Heraklion, its suburbs, and its surrounding villages also operate out of Bus Station A near the port. Multiple local bus lines stop at the airport, with buses departing every 10 minutes or so; the trip between the port and the airport takes about 20 minutes and costs 2€ per person. The #2 bus to ancient Knossos departs every 15-20 mins or so. Buses run from 6am to 11pm. • KTEL local bus website Heraklion Bus Station B , also known as Chanioporta, is located on the western side of Heraklio just outside the city walls (a 30-minute walk or 11-minute taxi ride ) and serves green intercity buses with routes along with the southeast coast of Crete: Zaros, Agia Galini, Anogia, Matala, Mires, Phaestos, and places in between. • KTEL regional bus website Most areas in Greece, including Crete, have public transportation strikes on various dates throughout the year. These strikes can affect all forms of transit, including, buses, trains, ferries, flights, and taxis. During strikes no buses, no ferries, and only a handful of trains and flights will depart on time (or at all); taxis tend to be the least affected mode of transport. Though strikes can occur any time, there is always a huge strike on May 1. Avoid booking any ferries, flights, or trains that day . A taxi between Heraklion Port and the Heraklion Airport will take about 10-15 minutes and cost around 15€. Taxis in Greece accommodate a maximum of four passengers. If there are more than four people in your party, you’ll need to take more than one taxi. As mentioned before, taxis are the least affected mode of transportation during public transportation strikes. Private Car Service at Heraklion Port Welcome Pickups is my favorite car service to use in Greece, and is a great pre-planned alternative to a taxi. Drivers operate 24 hours a day, speak English, monitor the ferry schedules in case of delays, and are available by text to answer travel questions throughout your stay in Heraklio. They can even provide travel extras such as guided tours, SIM cards, and maps. Child car seats can be pre-ordered in advance of your trip, and minivans are available to accommodate larger parties. When you arrive at the port, your driver will be waiting, holding a sign with your name.

Heraklion Port Parking and Car Rental Heraklion Port is located along the Green National Road 90, a well-maintained highway that connects all major cities along the northern coast of Crete. If you are driving from Agios Nikolaos or another area east of the port, drive west along the national highway, and then north towards the sea once you get to Heraklio. If you are coming from Rethymno, Chania, or other areas to the west, drive east along the national highway and follow the signs towards Heraklio, again heading north toward the sea. Heraklion Port provides plenty of short and long-term parking spots. These are located just to the west of Piers I and II. Handicapped parking spots are also available. A few car rental companies are located near the Heraklion Ferry Port. There are more rental cars at the Heraklion Airport , inside the Arrivals terminal. If you need an automatic shift, definitely pre-book your rental car, as these are often in short supply – especially in July and August. I recommend reserving through Rentalcars.com . The bus station across the street from the port has frequent buses to the airport on the Agios Nikolaos route. Heraklion Port on Foot My boys boarding the Santorini ferry in Heraklio. Walking is the easiest way to get around Heraklio if you’re not carrying a lot of luggage. The city is compact, and you can walk the town from end to end in less than an hour. Most of the city’s attractions are found within a five or six-block area, and within 20 minutes’ walking distance of the port. From the Heraklion Port passenger terminal, walk west along the seafront to the old town, the main tourist area where most major sights, shops, and restaurants can be found. The port helpfully provides a walking route that’s marked in yellow along the ground. If you’re just in port for a few hours and want to explore the city, luggage storage facilities can be found inside the port’s passenger station. Heraklion Port to the airport Blue local buses to the Heraklion Airport operate out of Bus Station A, located an easy 6-minute walk from the ferry port. Multiple local bus lines traveling east stop at the airport, with buses departing every 10 minutes or so. the trip between the port and the airport takes about 20 minutes and costs 2€ per person (buy your ticket on board the bus). Located 5km south of Heraklio; the #2 bus to Knossos departs from the Port bus terminal ( 4-minute walk from the port) every 15-20 mins or so. Better yet, get picked up at the port (or your hotel) and take a private guided tour . Heraklion Archaeological Museum – Excellent exhibits about the history of Crete and the Minoan civilazation, with loads of locally-sourced artwork and artifacts. Great to pair with a trip to nearby Knossos (a combined entry ticket will save you money). Admission is half-price from November through March. 12-minute walk from the port. Koules Fortress – Also known as Castello del Molo or Rocca a Mare, this impressive Venetian citadel was constructed in the Sea of Crete to protect the Heraklio harbor. 2€ will get you admission to explore the fort, but bring water and sunscreen – it’s a 2.2km unshaded walk across the rampart to get there. 14-minute walk from port to fort. Join Case Western Reserve University on an exciting trip to Greece where you'll enjoy historical sites and ruins as well as have time for leisurely relaxing on beautiful beaches.

Visit Athens, Delphi, Mycenae, Crete, Paros, and Mykonos. Explore important sites from ancient Greece, including the Acropolis and Agora of Athens, the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, Delphi, Corinth and Mycenae. Enjoy the National Archaeological Museum, the new Acropolis Museum, and museums at Delphi and Heraklion. Relax on beaches, including Matala, Hania, Paros, and enjoy scenic ferry rides to Delos and Mykonos.

Trip Inclusions

• Accommodation in double or single rooms in 3-star hotels for faculty and participants.
• Airport transfers upon arrival and departure if the participants arrive on a group flight.
• Orientation to the program at the Athens Centre, and walking orientations to the Mets area and to central Athens.
• Folders of materials for each student, with maps, program schedules, information on the sites to be visited, and other relevant information about Greece.
• Entry to all sites and museums. 
• Welcome and Farewell dinners, breakfast daily in all hotels.
• Transport on field trips outside Athens by private coach.
• Transport by air from Athens to Crete.
• Transport by ferry Crete to Paros, and from Paros to Athens.
• Cruise boat to the island of Mykonos and the archaeological island of Delos.
• Athens Centre representative to accompany the group on field trips outside Athens.
• A deposit of $1500/person will be required by February 1, 2023.
• Half the program fee is refunded if cancellation takes place before May 1.
• No refunds are given after May 1.
• Participants are strongly advised to get trip cancellation insurance, in case they have to cancel participation in the program at the last minute.
