Tips for Senior Travelers in Bahamas

In The Bahamas, the standard adult rate usually applies to everyone 21 years of age and over. The careful, frugal travel shopper, however, might find some deals if arrangements are made before you go.

Members of AARP, 601 E St. NW, Washington, DC 20049 (tel. 888/687-2277; www.aarp.org), get discounts on hotels, airfares, and car rentals. AARP offers members a range of benefits, including AARP The Magazine and a monthly newsletter. Anyone over 50 can join.

Many reliable agencies and organizations target the 50-plus market. Road Scholar (tel. 800/454-5768; www.roadscholar.org), formerly Exploritas/Elderhostel, arranges study programs for those aged 55 and over.

Recommended publications offering travel resources and discounts for seniors include the quarterly magazine Travel 50 & Beyond (www.travel50andbeyond.com); Travel Unlimited: Uncommon Adventures for the Mature Traveler (Avalon); 101 Tips for Mature Travelers, available from Grand Circle Travel (tel. 800/959-0405 or 617/350-7500; www.gct.com); and Unbelievably Good Deals and Great Adventures That You Absolutely Can't Get Unless You're Over 50 (McGraw-Hill), by Joan Rattner Heilman. The Louisiana high school graduate who disappeared after leaping off a cruise ship into dark waters off the Bahamas last week may have met a grisly fate in the “shark-infested” area, a local official said.

The waters off Athol Island, where 18-year-old Cameron Robbins was last seen swimming after jumping off the Blackbeard’s Revenge sunset cruise on May 24, are “really shark-infested,” Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF) Commodore Raymond King told the Daily Mail on Tuesday .

A chaotic video was taken moments after the jump also shows the Baton Rouge native ignoring onlookers’ pleas for him to grab a buoy and swimming in the opposite direction –prompting social media sleuths to suggest that a silvery reflection near the boat’s hull may have actually been a shark that scared him off.

“Haunting, but you can see the exact moment the shark gets him,” one Twitter user wrote alongside a screenshot of Robbins and the shadow just inches apart.

Cameron Robbins with friend Virginia Moore.

“Tragic & scary in every way.”

Another viewer argued that Robbins could be seen abandoning the life ring after he notices the shape nearby.

“He initially goes for the buoy but then turns around when he sees the shark, ultimately disappearing into the water, likely dragged down. Very sad,” they wrote .

The video was taken moments after the jump also shows the Baton Rouge native ignoring onlookers’ pleas for him to grab onto a buoy.

The Blackbeard’s Revenge , which is designed to resemble a pirate ship, remained in the area for several hours while the crew attempted to look for Robbins.

The Coast Guard called off its own search two days later , after reportedly scouring over 325 square miles.

What to know about Cameron Robbins' disappearance

Cameron Robbins, 18, graduated from University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge in May and was on a trip to the Bahamas with students from several local high schools.

According to witnesses, the teen — who was apparently acting on a dare — took a plunge off a party cruise into the ocean near Athol Island at night.

Robbins was last seen splashing in the dark, “shark-infested” waters a few feet from the boat, before vanishing from view.

A chaotic video taken moments after the jump also shows the recent graduate ignoring onlookers’ pleas to grab a buoy.

The party ship remained in the area for several hours while the crew looked for Robbins.

The Coast Guard  called off its own search two days later , after reportedly scouring over 325 square miles.

Robbins disappeared three days after his graduation from University Laboratory School.

He was staying at Atlantis Paradise Island with a group of fellow seniors from other area high schools.

In the wake of the tragedy, University Lab School Director Kevin George described the former baseball star as a “great kid.”

“He’s an athlete … great smile, great head of hair,” he told WBRZ.

“Just one of the kids you’re so proud of when they cross the stage.”

Looking for information from anyone who has traveled with a student travel company to the bahamas.

Quality of places you've stayed?

Activities organized by the travel company?

Would you go again or send you child back if you had it to do all over again?

Would love to hear from Parents that have sent their and/or you adults that have made the trip.

' class=

I've never allowed my teens to do this, but as a local, I've seen it many times over the years.

Chaperones rarely pay any attention, and kids get stupid drunk and in trouble all the time.

As for safety, the Tourist corridor is generally safe during the daytime for sober folks. But teens drinking lose their way. We have scooter and jetski accidents every season, some fatal. We have locals hitting on young girls, and young men befriending kids, getting them drunk and taking their money.

we have young women going off with local boys and finding themselves in trouble. All while chaperoned.

Natalie Hollaway is a true story. It happens, even to the best of kids. They are children, not adults.

As a parent, I would never let my teens travel to a foreign country at this age. Especially one where partying is the nature of the trip.

s for places to stay.. it depends on what you book. Some places are dumps, some middle of the road, and some decent. Depends on your budget. when you have the names of some places, come back to the forum and we'll give you the skinny.

Most organized activities have to do with partying. Drinking Games, beach parties etc. Chaperones are rarely around.

In your post, you refer to your CHILD. As a parent, I would never let my CHILD go to a drinking party, especially in another country.

Just my 2 cents.

Thank you so much for you for taking time to reply to my post. IF i decide to let my son attend this trip I will be traveling with him. The hotel the are selling is the PI Harbour Resosrt. Any links to local stories regarding safety or accidents that I could share with other parents would be appreciated.

Paradise Island Harbour Resort is a 2.5 star spring break hotel On the shabgy sde -with thin walls.

Read the reviews. Decent food, cheap brand alcohol.

This hotel was bought at auction recently and is scheduled for a complete overhaul this summer.

Locals will say anything not to have kids in their area. I sent my children on this trip (they are 1 year apart and i sent them both in different years) and they did not drink or go to nightclubs and were extremely safe! as long as your child is trustworthy this trip is very educational. i am glad i sent my child on this trip because i know many parents who haven't and their children go in college which is even worse! this trip was very safe and the gradweek organizers were very responsible with my children. id recommend to anyone to send a 17-19 year old on this trip.

I would imagine that the advice given here must be considered plausible as so many return here looking for answers...

So here it is: Any parent who thinks Gradweek or other such company's trips are educational is delusional- period.

I would urge any such parents to behoove themselves of the advertised weekly "action pac" on Gradweek's website filled w/ discounts to local nightclubs and bars ie. cheap booze, to re-think their naivete, their claims "they do not drink or go to nightclubs".

Or better yet go to the facebook pages or youtube videos of these establishments.

As the parent of four wonderful boys and having lived in a front row seat so to speak to the action, I have no delusions as to the behaviour of teenagers even the "trustworthy" ones.

There is nothing quite like the nightly experience when the " Sunset Cruise" makes it slow progress across your dock bass a-thumping, packed with drunken teenagers and the loud calls from the DJ to "lick it up b****h" reverberating in your chest.

So the statement of not wanting "kids in their area" might be true, but thankfully the liars who lurk here are usually easily to recognize: they usually have only 1 or 2 posts with their name.

Is anyone willing to stake their child's life or well being on the fact that the dangers of which we warn are not based in fact?

Educate yourself, for your child's sake.

I enjoyed living in the Bahamas, but I do not miss spring break on PI.

This post was determined to be inappropriate by the Tripadvisor community and has been removed.

Rosie.. a big "LIKE" to you.

I couldn't even respond to this.. Glad you did.

' class=

If you're going to say they are staking their lives, well they're doing it just as much at home as here.

It is all about the individual "kid". The stupid kids get stupid drunk and in trouble all the time. The sensible ones do not.

Thanks Scuba, I couldn't let that silly rant go unanswered!

I agree that there are just as many temptations and crime etc..back home and there are sensible and stupid kids; that being said given the statistics of kids/students who drink, party etc. it is clear that some must be casting aside their smarts and sensibilities at least some of the time....how did all these dumb kids get into university?

high school senior trip to bahamas

Making Memories at the Beach

One of the best ways to capture those unforgettable moments is with a  waterproof disposable camera . This gadget will allow you to document every dive into the crystal-clear waters and every sunset stroll along the shoreline. Imagine  looking back  at these pictures and reliving the fun times you had with your friends. ? Next, don’t forget about the little things that can make a big difference. Pack a  waterproof pouch  for your phone and other valuables, so you can relax and enjoy the water without worrying about your belongings. And for those moments when you just want to lay back and soak up the sun, don’t forget a comfortable pair of headphones so you can relax to your favorite tunes ?

Beach Games – Turning Free Time into Fun Time

Ready to take a break from the books and have some fun in the sun? Beach games are the perfect way to turn your free time into an absolute blast on your senior trip to Freeport. Grab your travel essentials and make sure they include some game-changing items that will take your beach experience to the next level. First up,  waterproof playing cards . Whether you’re lounging on the sand or enjoying a beach picnic, these cards will provide endless hours of entertainment. Challenge your friends to your favorite card game or test your luck with some card tricks. The possibilities are endless! But if you’re looking for a beach game that’s a little more interactive, check out the  TidalBall Set . This unique game is like a combination of bocce ball and cornhole, and it’s perfect for the beach. Set up your TidalBall court in the sand and let the competition begin. It’s a great way to meet new people and make friends with fellow senior trip-goers. So, when you’re packing your travel checklist, don’t forget to include some beach games. They’ll add a whole new level of excitement and fun to your senior trip. Get ready for some friendly competition, laughter, and memories that will last a lifetime. Let the games begin!

Navigating Bahamian Sun

When you’re enjoying the beautiful beaches of Freeport on your senior trip, it’s important to take care of your skin under the Bahamian sun. That’s where sunscreens and protective gear come in. Packing the right sunscreens and protective gear will ensure you stay safe and have a worry-free time on the beach. There are different types of sunscreens to consider. Chemical sunscreens use active ingredients to absorb UV rays, while mineral sunscreens use minerals like zinc oxide to block and reflect the sun’s rays. If you’re planning to go swimming or snorkeling, opt for a waterproof sunscreen to ensure maximum protection. And remember, it’s important to choose  reef-friendly sunscreens  that won’t harm the beautiful marine life in the Bahamas. In addition to sunscreen, protective gear such as a wide-brimmed hat and  UV-blocking sunglasses  are essential for shielding your face and eyes from the sun’s harmful rays.

Staying Hydrated and Fueled: Reusable Water Bottle + Liquid IV

Stay refreshed and energized during your senior trip with a  reusable water bottle  and Liquid IV. Hydration is key, especially under the Bahamian sun, and a reusable water bottle will ensure you have access to fresh and cold water wherever you go. Pair it with Liquid IV, a hydration multiplier that provides electrolytes and vitamins, to keep you feeling your best throughout your beach adventures. Don’t let dehydration dampen your fun – stay hydrated and fueled up for the trip of a lifetime!

Get Ready For The Trip of a Lifetime

Pack your bags, grab your friends, and get ready for the  trip of a lifetime  in Freeport, Bahamas! This senior trip is the perfect way to celebrate your graduation and make memories that will last a lifetime. From lounging on the beautiful beaches to exploring the vibrant culture, Freeport has it all. So get ready to embark on an adventure like no other – it’s time to create unforgettable moments with your closest friends and make this trip the highlight of your senior year!

Here are some tips to save up for your trip :

  • Get a part-time job – Earning extra money by working part-time can be a great way to save up for your senior trip. Consider getting a job after school or on the weekends to boost your savings.
  • Cut back on expenses – Take a look at your monthly expenses and see if there are any areas where you can cut back. Skipping your morning latte or packing your lunch instead of eating out can save you a lot of money in the long run and help you save up for the senior trip of your dreams!
  • Ask for contributions – Instead of traditional birthday or holiday gifts, consider asking your friends and family to contribute to your senior trip fund. Every little bit helps!
