Situated in the Mbirikani Private Ranch in Kenya, the Lodge is a member of the Great Plains Conservation in collaboration with National Geographic filmmakers, the Jouberts. At ol Donyo Lodge, guests can expect daily game drives and views across the savanna, including the great Mount Kilimanjaro.

While the main house at ol Donyou Lodge is a colonial-style lodge with ten bedrooms (sleeping up to 20 guests), for a more private getaway nothing beats the Sambu Suite . Another luxury safari resort set on the edge of Volcanic National Park in northwest Rwanda, Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge is uniquely situated on the slopes of an eroded volcanic crater. The 10 Best Safari Lodges in Africa in 2022

The best safari lodges, according to Travel + Leisure readers, go beyond the traditional game drive with a wide range of cultural experiences.

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite safari lodges in Africa.

For Travel + Leisure readers, the best safari lodges in Africa aren't necessarily traditional safari properties — though plenty of those did make this list. Take, for example, Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge — a luxurious base for tracking mountain gorillas in the cloud forest of Rwanda. It seems that this once-in-a-lifetime experience elevated guests' memories beyond those of Big Five safaris: the word amazing appears repeatedly in Bisate reviews.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

This year's World's Best list reveals a growing interest in nontraditional safaris. In addition to Bisate at the top spot, there's another Rwandan lodge, One&Only Nyungwe House (No. 3), where the highlights are tracking chimpanzees, bird-watching, and visiting a tea plantation. "A gorgeous property in an incredible location," said one voter. And there's a second gorilla-tracking property on the list: Bwindi Lodge (No. 10), in Uganda. "How special to stay at Bwindi Lodge," wrote one guest, "and be so well cared for when setting out to see the magnificent gorillas."

At No. 2, Gibb's Farm is "the most unique lodge of any kind in East Africa," claimed one reader. Overlooking Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, a protected area known for its incredible density of wildlife, the 17-cottage property offers activities around its coffee plantation and gardens, as well as bush walks from the property and wildlife drives in the crater. One guest loved that it was "fun for adults and kids." It's "an incredibly beautiful hotel," said another. "The food was amazing, and I loved the farm-to-table philosophy."

Classic safaris are still well represented, with guests favoring wildlife-rich areas such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya, and the South African Kruger National Park. As well as wildlife sightings and luxurious rooms, it was the people who made an impact on T+L readers. Of andBeyond Bateleur Camp (No. 6), in Kenya's Masai Mara, one reader said that "the guides are truly spectacular," while another described "warm, welcoming service."

1. Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge, Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

On the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bisate Lodge has six stylish and cozy villas, each overlooking the surrounding villages, forests, and misty mountain peaks. The main activity there is trekking into the national park to spend some time watching the mountain gorillas, but there are also opportunities to see golden monkeys, go hiking in the mountains, or visit the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey. The staff are "amazing," said one reader, who added the food was "delicious," especially the homegrown vegetables. Another fan said staying at Bisate was "the absolute best...experience we have ever had. The food, service, and rooms were beyond amazing."

There are 16 luxury Club Rooms and 4 Club Suites, which include a lounge, adding to the feeling of abundant space and comfort.

All rooms, which face the bushveld, feature an open-plan design and are elegantly decorated in earthy tones to blend harmoniously with the African surrounds.

The rooms have two three-quarter beds that may be converted to a king-size bed, sliding glass doors and gauze screens which open out onto a private balcony with sunset views. The bathrooms feature a large free-standing bath and separate walk-in rainfall shower, bathrobes, slippers and a selection of luxurious toiletries.

All rooms have a complimentary minibar, laundry service and tea and coffee making facilities, including a Nespresso machine.

Our Club Rooms, each with   two three quarter beds that may be converted to a king-size, have sliding glass doors and gauze screens which open out onto a private balcony .  The bathrooms feature a large luxury free-standing bath and separate walk-in rainfall shower, bathrobes, slippers and bath salts.

Our Club Suites offer the same facilities as our Club rooms, and also have a lounge which adds to the feeling of abundant space and comfort.

Theme suite rules:

• It is not allowed to light candles due to fire safety. The security system is activated immediately.
• A valid ID must be presented at check-in. Check-in is possible from the age of 18. Both guests must be 18 years of age or older. Minors must always be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
• A maximum of two people are allowed in the suite.
• It is not allowed to receive unregistered or other hotel guests in the room. If other guests are found in the room, you will be asked to leave the hotel immediately.
• The check-out time for the suite is noon at the latest. After this we will check the suite.
• No pets are allowed in the suites.
• Before issuing the room key, we ask for a deposit of € 100,- cash or pin, or an authorization from your credit card, as a guarantee.
• Any damage will be deducted from the deposit. In case of larger damage, we will send you an invoice for this. After the suite has been inspected, the security deposit will be returned to you.
• Deposit will only be refunded to the guest who provides identification during check-in. Showing identification with the return payment of the deposit is mandatory.
• It is required to present a valid ID. If the room is reserved for 2 people, both must show a valid ID.
• Smoking is not allowed, as is the possession and use of drugs and nitrous oxide cartridges. In case of violation, the hotel can impose a fine of up to €250.00 and we ask you to leave the hotel immediately.
• Our general house rules also apply during your stay at Hotel Utrecht.

If you do not comply with the above house rules or if property of Hotel Utrecht is damaged, lost or destroyed, you will not receive a warning, but this will lead to immediate removal, liability and/or reporting to the police. This also means that no money will be returned and your deposit will unfortunately be withheld.
