In the eighteenth century, the powerful Temple-Grenville family chose to create an idyllic landscape filled with temples. Amidst these enchanting gardens (now cared for separately by the National Trust), they built the most lavish temple of all, Stowe House, famous during its eighteenth-century heyday as an important artistic masterpiece.

In 1922, in the face of demolition, Stowe School saved the building from certain destruction. Unlike the loss and decline of many English country houses, Stowe House found a new and revived use for the twentieth and twenty-first centuries as a school for boys and girls. Stowe House Preservation Trust was established in 1997 to restore the House and share this special place with the world.

Come inside the House to see the results of one of the most pioneering restoration projects of the twenty-first century and see inside one of the most excessive homes in England.

Please note:  The information on the Historic Houses website is advisory, but please always check the website of the house or garden you intend to visit before travelling.

Weekends in the winter months, most days in summer months.

Stowe House release their House tickets one week before the date of the visit. They don’t release them sooner because Stowe House is a working building and so their opening times can be subject to change.

The main entrance to the House is via the gardens of National Trust Stowe. The National Trust Visitor Centre is called New Inn. Please arrive at New Inn and enjoy your walk through the Gardens to reach us. Garden admission applies.

When arriving for a house-only visit we ask that you enter the estate via our private Stowe School entrance.

Please note you must telephone or  email  in advance to arrange access via this entrance to the estate.

Historic Houses members visit the house (but NOT the gardens) for free, but must book in advance online.

Non-member adult admission:  £9.50

Our learning programme is based on the tradition of creativity at Stowe House and we use this to provide an inspirational learning experience. We closely connect our workshops to the National Curriculum but whatever the focus, the content is cross-curricular and includes at least one core subject.

Our sessions are designed to be fun, hands-on and active, with opportunities to be in role, dress up, tell stories and make something creative. All of our workshops have been developed in consultation with local schools and are delivered by a dynamic and highly experienced team.

Getting here

There is ample visitor parking and it is located close to the House. There is no charge for parking at the House.

For prearranged access to this entrance please use postcode MK18 5EH

Isabella   Holmes Beecher Hooker (1822-1907) An ardent member of the woman’s suffrage movement, Isabella Holmes Beecher Hooker joined in the cause along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.

stowe school virtual tour

Isabella was the first child of Lyman Beecher and his second wife, Harriet Porter Beecher.

Isabella began her education at Catharine Beecher’s Hartford Female Seminary and lived with her sister Mary Perkins. In 1841 she married John Hooker, a descendant of Thomas Hooker, the founder of Hartford. John Hooker was a lawyer and an abolitionist.

In the early 1860s Isabella got involved in the woman’s suffrage movement. Isabella joined Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony as a member of the National Woman’s Suffrage Association in 1869. She was a founding member of the Connecticut Woman’s Suffrage Association. Isabella’s ideas of equality were influenced by John Stuart Mills’  On Liberty  and the  Subjection of Women .

In 1871, Isabella organized the annual convention of the National Woman’s Suffrage Association in Washington D.C. and presented her argument before the Committee on the Judiciary of the United States Senate. Her husband,  John Hooker , believed in his wife and supported her activities. He helped Isabella draft a bill to the Connecticut Legislature giving married women the same property rights as their husbands. The bill passed in 1877. Isabella annually submitted a bill granting women the right to vote, but it did not pass in her lifetime.

Due to inclement weather, the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center is closed today, Monday, December 2.
