Truly Tokyo

A Tokyo Travel Guide

Arriving at Tokyo’s Narita International Airport

For most travelers, Tokyo’s Narita International Airport (NRT), will be their gateway to Japan. Here is a step-by-step guide to arriving at the airport and getting everything you need for a great stay in Japan.

Flying above Tokyo

Tokyo Airport Introduction

Two airports serve Tokyo: Haneda (HND) and Narita (NRT). Haneda is closer and more convenient, but Narita handles most international flights. Narita is an efficient, modern airport where you can get everything you need for your stay in Japan. What do you need?

  • Japanese cash
  • A SIM card, pocket wifi, or rental cellphone
  • Quick refreshment or snacks
  • A train or bus ticket into Tokyo
  • A Japan Rail Pass (if you haven’t purchased one before arrival)
  • A Welcome Suica card

Amazingly, you can take care of all of this within 200 meters of exiting the customs hall into the arrivals hall. If you’re timing is good and it’s not too crowded, you can get all this taken care of within half an hour and be sitting on the Narita Express sipping a cup of coffee racing into Tokyo to start one of the most incredible experiences of your life. Here are all the details.

Note, the following guide covers Terminal 1, which is Narita’s biggest terminal. I describe the process of emerging from customs in the South Wing of Terminal 1. Terminal 2 is very similar and the facilities are the same, but locations differ slightly.

Step-by-Step Narita Arrival Guide

Entering the arrivals hall from customs

Once you clear immigration and customs, you will pass through automatic doors into the arrivals hall. It can be crowded here, but not nearly as chaotic as some other airports. Directly in front of you, you will see a small counter selling JR and Keisei line train tickets. Savvy travelers buy their train tickets here, since the lines are usually much longer downstairs. You can use credit cards, so Japanese cash is not necessary. But, you cannot convert exchange passes into Japan Rail Passes here (you can do that downstairs).

Train ticket counter in arrivals hall

Next to the train ticket counter, you will see the limousine bus ticket counter. If you’ve got a lot of luggage and don’t want to deal with taking it through train stations, these buses are a great way to get into the city. For details on trains, buses and taxis between Narita and Tokyo, see our Tokyo Airport Transport page.

Limousine bus ticket counter in arrivals hall

There another counter in the arrivals hall that specializes in low-cost buses into Tokyo. These offer significant savings over the normal buses, so it’s worth asking if there are any buses going your way.

Low-cost bus ticket counter

Nearby, you will see an information counter. The bilingual ladies here are incredibly helpful and can help with all kinds of questions.

Information counter in arrivals hall

At the extreme end of the hall, you will find luggage delivery services (takkyubin). Savvy travelers use these to ship their big bags or suitcases to their first night’s hotel, then board their train/bus/taxi with nothing but a light knapsack or shoulder bag. The luggage will usually arrive the next day. You can also book your luggage delivery service online through an agent like Klook before you leave home. See our detailed guide for more information about how Japan's luggage delivery services work.

Takkyubin counters in arrival hall

When you stand with your back to customs and have the bus and train counters in front of you, if you take a left, you will be headed for the central part of the terminal arrivals area. Here you can get money , train passes, SIM cards etc. It’s also the direction for trains.

Direction of service center and trains

On your left, just before the escalators, you will find 7-11 ATMs. This is a great place to get Japanese cash and the machines work with most international cards.

7-11 ATM signs in arrivals hall

The ATMs are marked “7 Bank” and the international cash networks they accept are clearly listed. English instructions are available.

7-11 ATMs in arrivals hall

If you walk just past the escalators, you will find yourself at a JTB Travel Service Center. You can buy a Japan Rail Pass here, in case you did not do so before arriving in Japan.

JTB Travel Service Center in arrivals hall

Just to the right of the JTB Travel Service Center, you will find counters where you can buy SIM cards, and rent pocket wifis and cell phones. Rates and prices are generally pretty similar, but you might want to shop around for the best deal. For the complete lowdown on internet and phone issues in Japan, see our Internet in Japan for Tourists page.

Cell phone and SIM counters in arrivals hall

To get to the train station and JR/Keisei ticket offices, take the nearby escalators down to the B1 floor. It’s clearly marked.

Escalators down to trains in arrivals hall

On your left, at the bottom of the escalators, you will find a Lawson convenience store, where you can buy all kinds of snacks and drinks. There’s an ATM here that works with many international cards. If your card doesn't work here, head back upstairs to the 7-11 ATMs.

Lawson Convenience Store in arrivals hall

On your right as you enter the main concourse on the B1 level, you will see the Keisei Information Center. The Keisei Line is a private rail line that runs between Narita and Ueno and Nippori Stations in Tokyo. Their Skyliner airport express will get you to Ueno in 41 minutes. It’s a good choice for those staying in Ueno, Asakusa and other area on the northeast side of Tokyo. It’s also a good choice if the lines at the JR ticket counters are very long.

Keisei Information Center

Also on your right as you enter the main concourse on the B1 level (just after the Keisei office), you will see the JR East Travel Service Center. This is the place to convert a Japan Rail Pass exchange voucher into the actual pass. Note that if the line is long or if you are planning to spend your first few days in Tokyo, you should buy your train ticket with cash and exchange your pass in Tokyo. Note, you can buy train tickets at the regular JR counter near the JR turnstiles, and the line is usually much shorter and faster here. You can also buy JR tickets from the ticket machines if you have Japanese cash.

JR East Travel Service Center

The JR ticket machines are on the right, shortly before the entrance to the JR train platforms. These are a little fiddly to use and you’ll need Japanese cash as they don’t work with foreign credit cards. Still, if you’re up for the challenge, these can save you a lot of time if the lines are long at the service center and ticket counter. There’s usually someone on hand who can help you work the machine.

JR ticket machines

The JR ticket counter is a good place to buy your Narita Express ticket if you aren’t using a Japan Rail Pass and don’t want to deal with the machines.

JR ticket counter

You enter the JR station itself via the turnstiles on the right side, at the far end of the concourse.

JR turnstiles

Just before the JR turnstiles, you will find a bank of three machines. The one closest to the turnstiles is where you can buy a SUICA card. These super-useful cards are highly recommended. For full details, see our Tokyo Smart Cards: Pasmo and Suica page.

Suica machines

If you’d like to buy a Welcome Suica card (which requires no deposit), you can do so at a vending machine on your left, just before the JR turnstiles.

Welcome Suica vending machine

Next to the JR entrance is the entrance for Keisei Line trains. Use this if you’re taking the Keisei Line (Skyliner etc) into Tokyo.

Transportation Between Narita Airport Terminals

There are many ways to get from one terminal to another. While you can walk or take a taxi, the most convenient way is to catch a free shuttle bus. They are easy to recognize with their bright yellow and blue colors.

Free terminal shuttle bus

Narita Shuttle Bus Timetable

Narita Shuttle Bus Timetable

Important: Be sure to allow plenty of time when using the shuttle service, as buses may be delayed or canceled due to traffic congestion. Also, compensation is not available for missed connections to other means of transport (aircraft or rail, etc.) resulting from delayed or canceled bus services.

If you are leaving Narita Airport by train, you have two basic options to get to Tokyo. For other transportation options, check here . Don’t hesitate to ask for the information counter about how to pay for your transportation fare.

Get a Rechargeable Train Card (IC Card)

※As of September 21, 2023, the sales of certain Suica and Pasmo IC cards have been temporarily suspended due to a shortage of IC chips. Specialized PASMO (PASMO Passport) IC cards and JR’s (Welcome Suica) cards are still available for sale.

Japan is a country often regarded as the king of convenience, and this is clearly on display with its public transportation system . Have you ever heard of an IC card? If you haven’t, you definitely need to get one for your trip, as it will save you a lot of time and headaches. IC cards look like credit cards and act as rechargeable train tickets that can be recharged at train stations throughout Japan.

Get a Rechargeable Train Card (IC Card)

It doesn’t matter which card you get because Suica and PASMO can be recharged at each other’s ticket terminals and can be used at train stations in Japan.

Where can you use an IC card?

  • Public transportation
  • Vending machines
  • Some shops and convenience stores
  • Some restaurants

The card itself costs around $5 USD, plus the amount you decide to add to it. It’s possible to get back the $5 as well as any remaining credit by returning the card to a train station clerk (go to a JR station for Suica and any other station for PASMO).

Earlier, we mentioned Portable WiFi and SIM Card rental services at Narita Airport. Having the internet on the go is not only lifesaving, but it can offer you a side of Japan you might never have experienced without it. Let’s dig in a bit more on how the internet can make your trip to Japan easy and stress-free.

Are you staying in Japan for less than 28 days?

The Complete Guide to Narita Airport: All Terminals!

Narita Airport is often called the “gateway to Japan,” with numerous international flights arriving and departing on a daily base. It is somewhat far from the center of Tokyo, but year after year, access to the large airport has become faster and more convenient. Using trains and buses, you’ll find yourself in Central Tokyo faster than expected! But how to get to these trains and buses? Let’s take a thorough look at all of Narita Airport ’s three terminals!

■ Terminal 1

1) structure and exits of the arrival lobby.

The main characteristic of Terminal 1 is the divide in north wing and south wing. Regardless of the terminal you find yourself at, there are counters that sell bus and train tickets at both north and south wing. The Arrival Lobby is on the 1st floor and all buses depart from the 1st floor as well. If you go by train, take the elevator or escalator down to B1F.

2) Surprisingly Easy: Getting to Central Tokyo

Keisei Bus is on the left, Limousine Bus is on the right.

As soon as you leave the Arrival Lobby, you’ll immediately find the bus ticket counters right in front of you. The main ones are Keisei Bus and Airport Limousine Bus, but there are plenty of buses serving various directions, so make sure to carefully check where you want to go at the ticket counter. If you’re confident and not afraid of possible transfers and so on, we especially recommend Keisei Bus’s Tokyo Shuttle – a one-way ticket to Tokyo costs a mere 1,000 yen. Both Keisei Bus and Airport Limousine Bus sell combination tickets for Tokyo Metro, allowing you unlimited train rides for 24 hours, 48 hours, or 72 hours. Buying this combination ticket is cheaper than purchasing these passes separately. ・ Limousine Bus (counter): south wing & north wing, 6:30 a.m. – 11:00 p.m. ・ Keisei Bus (counter): south wing & north wing, 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.

The bus stations are right behind the ticket counter. Make sure to check time and destination before boarding.

If you choose to go by train, such as Keisei’s Skyliner or JR’s Narita Express, go down to B1F, where the ticket counters are. The trains also depart on this basement floor.

・ Narita Express: Ticket Counters and Boarding Platforms

As soon as you go down to B1F, look for the ticket counters with a red sign above them. You can get your tickets either at a staffed ticket counter, or at an automatic ticket vending machine. To save some money, we recommend buying a round-trip ticket, but in any case, make a seat reservation. If you don’t decide on a specific time for your way back to Narita Airport , you can’t make such a seat reservation. It’s recommended to either decide a time or making a seat reservation at ant JR Station before boarding the train.

・ Skyliner: Ticket Counters and Boarding Platforms

Keisei’s staffed ticket counters.

The Skyliner takes you from Narita Airport to Tokyo in as little as 36 minutes. For the Tokyo subway combination ticket, ask the staff at the ticket counter. The ticket vending machines only accept cash while at the counters, you can pay with a credit card. By the way, the Keisei Main Line and the Keisei Access Express are cheaper alternatives to the Skyliner but stop at local stations, so they take longer.

3) Where to Buy Japan Rail Pass and Other JR Tickets

In today’s world, you don’t want to travel without internet. On Narita Airport ’s Terminal 1, there are both SIM card and rental Wi-Fi vending machines and counters on the 1st-floor Arrival Lobby and B1F, close to the train platforms. The prices don’t vary too much by provider, so mainly keep an eye out on how much data you plan to use, your schedule, and what kind of SIM card you want.

・ Buying a SIM Card at a Vending Machine

This SIM card vending machine can be found behind the Visitor Service Center

Two vending machines sell SIM cards from different providers. Choose by type, such as micro or nano, as well as length: 7 days, 14 days, and 15 days. The ones on the right can even be paid with credit cards. 1F floor Arrival Lobby, behind the Visitor Service Center Hours: 24/7

The same system works the other way around, of course, allowing you to use every minute in Japan and picking up your luggage right at the airport before you leave. When you arrive, head to a delivery service counter at the Arrival Lobby, while you can easily pick up luggage at similar counters at the Departure Lobby on your last day.

・ Train If you want to go to Central Tokyo by train, go down to B1F and find a ticket counter there. Both Keisei’s Skyliner and JR’s Narita Express depart from this floor.

After going down to B1F by escalator, you’ll immediately see the train sign.

Tickets for the Narita Express are available at either ticket counters or vending machines. Buying a round-trip ticket will save you quite a bit of money, but do pay attention to seat reservation. If you don’t decide on a specific time for your way back to Narita Airport , you can’t make such a seat reservation. It’s recommended to either decide a time or making a seat reservation at ant JR Station before boarding the train. ・ Skyliner: Ticket Counters and Boarding Platforms

■ Terminal 3

Terminal 3 is the terminal of low-cost carriers and domestic flights. Arrivals and departures share a lobby. The structure of Terminal 3 is simple and easy to understand. However, train access and luggage delivery services aren’t directly available – you’ll have to go to Terminal 2 for that. Let’s take a look at how to get around Terminal 3, the connections to other terminals, and how to get to Central Tokyo from there.

A route map in Terminal 3. If you want to take the train, you need to go to Terminal 1 or 2 by bus first.

After your arrival, simply follow the floor’s orange marks with a train or bus symbol and head towards the exit. You’ll end up right in front of the bus ticket counter. Three different bus services are available: Airport Limousine, Keisei Bus, and JR Bus.

jtb travel center narita

Additionally, the vending machines right next to this bus ticket counter sells tickets for the Skyliner up to 20 minutes before its departure. It’s a good idea to buy them here to avoid congestion at the station. Keep in mind, however, that tickets for JR lines cannot be bought here, but the bulletin board still shows all necessary information. If you want to take the Narita Express, you’ll have to go to another Terminal to buy a ticket. Getting to the Bus Stations At the other terminals, the bus stations are right in front of the exits, but Terminal 3 requires a bit of a walk. Follow the orange signs within the terminal and take the escalator downstairs to get to the buses. See the picture below.

Leave the terminal and continue straight, past the fork. You’ll arrive at the bus terminal after going down the escalator.

・ Train (Different Terminal) If you want to get to Tokyo by train, you have to go to another terminal first. There’s a free shuttle bus that runs between Narita Airport ’s different terminals or simply walk to Terminal 2. That takes about 10-15 minutes. ・ Taking the Shuttle Bus

Leave the terminal and follow the road as it turns right. Get off the escalator, the shuttle bus stop is right in front. The time of the next bus is displayed on the bulletin board.

The shuttle buses to Terminal 2 run frequently, arriving roughly every 5 minutes. If you want to go to Terminal 1, you might have to wait up to 30 minutes if you are unlucky enough to get a particularly bad connection. See the image below for a timetable.

jtb travel center narita

・ Walking to Terminal 2 If you don’t travel with heavy, large luggage, you might want to go to Terminal 2 on foot. Leave Terminal 3 and go straight ahead. Stick to the left as the road splits into two and take the escalator.

There are also maps that indicate your location.

The walk to Terminal 2 is about 530 meters long. That sounds rather long at first, but you’re walking under a roof at all times and essentially only have to go straight. On top of that, there are plenty of areas to rest at, so stretching your legs after a long flight might be rather invigorating.

3) Getting a SIM Card and Rental Wi-Fi

Both SIM cards and Wi-Fi routers are directly available at Terminal 3.

Please note that these vending machines only accept cash.

Vending machines are right next to the terminal’s exit, in a corner of the coin locker area. 2F Departure/Arrival Lobby ・ Buying & Renting at the TelecomSquare

jtb travel center narita

Buy a SIM card that works in Japan or rent a portable Wi-Fi router at the TelecomSquare. There are two kinds of SIM cards available 7 days for 3,800 yen, and 30 days for 5,500 yen. If you plan to share it with friends, we recommend the rental Wi-Fi routers for 1,296 yen per day. For stays longer than 7 days, there are even plans with 7, 15, or 30 days respectively. 2F Departure/Arrival Lobby Hours: 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. If there’s anything you want to know, need help with, or feel like you’re lost, make sure to go to a nearby information center or ask the Narita Airport staff. Make your journey smooth and fun!

Its reputation for granting wishes and bestowing good luck first grew in the Edo Period, after the kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro prayed at the temple for a son who could become his heir, and the temple’s main deity of Ofudo-sama granted his wish in 1688. The characters in the name Shinshoji mean ‘new’ and ‘victory,’ and the temple is considered one of Japan’s most sacred places. Adjacent to the temple lies Naritasan Park, featuring a beautiful walking path, several ponds and a waterfall, and the impressive Great Peace Pagoda.

Omotesando Street

Omotesando Street

Narita’s Omotesando Street leads up to Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, and is lined with traditional shops where you can snack on hand-grilled rice crackers, taste saké, browse handicrafts, and more. In the Edo Period this was the last kilometer of the long pilgrimage route from the capital, and here tired pilgrims found inns at which to rest as well as numerous places to eat. One food reputed to provide a special energy boost is unagi, a grilled eel dish usually served over rice, and its popularity with visitors to Narita has led it to become a local specialty. Today you can choose from dozens of different unagi restaurants along Omotesando Street, including some at which you can watch the chefs prepare and grill the freshly caught eel.

Optional Activities

Sutra Copying Experience

Sutra Copying Experience

Called shakyo, sutra copying is a form of meditation not unlike the chanting of a sutra. At Narita you can try this unique experience at the Great Peace Pagoda located in Naritasan Park.Select from two different sutras: the ten-character Gohogo sutra (1000 yen, approximately 15 minutes required) or the Heart Sutra (2000 yen, between 1 and 2 hours required). Reservations are not necessary.

Famous Unagi Cuisine Restaurant

Famous Unagi Cuisine Restaurant

Locally caught unagi (freshwater eel) is grilled with a special sauce and served over white rice, and the delicacy’s reputation for being a good source of nutrition and stamina has made it a popular choice among visitors to Narita since the Edo Period. At this famous restaurant the eel is cleaned and prepared in open view, so if you like you can watch the chefs at work. Budget approximately 2500 to 5000 yen for a meal.

Kimono Rental

Kimono Rental

If you’ve ever worn kimono before you know that few other things bring so much authenticity to the Japanese experience. And if you haven’t ever worn a real kimono, the Edo Era atmosphere of Omotesando Street with its many traditional shops is perfect for the occasion. Kimono rental is available Wednesday through Friday, 10am to 3pm, at Machikado Fureaikan, located right off of Omotesando Street. Kimono can be worn by men, women and children, with a range of sizes fitting heights 100–180cm (39–71 inches) best. Cost is 800 yen per adult and 500 yen per child. Machikado Fureaikan is closed from the end of December to early January, mid-August, and during major Narita events.

Goma Fire Ritual

Goma Fire Ritual

A daily tradition held since Naritasan Shinshoji Temple was founded in the 10th century, the Goma Fire ritual, also referred to as the Ogoma Kito prayer, calls upon the temple’s main deity of Ofudo-sama, the God of Fire, to grant worshipper’s wishes and protect them from bad luck. The ritual is held several times per day, lasts 20–30 minutes, and is free. Reservations are not required. Photography during the event is not permitted.

Tea Ceremony

Tea Ceremony

Every Thursday morning, free tea ceremony demonstrations are given with English explanations of the traditional customs and significance of many elements of this art form which dates back to the Heian Era. Held at the Narita Tourist Pavilion, located about halfway along Omotesando Street on the way to Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, this tea ceremony experience lets tourists enjoy hot matcha tea and small wagashi sweets in a tatami room while learning about the traditional Japanese tea ceremony in a relaxed environment. Schedule: Every Thursday from 10:30 to 11:30. Not held in January.
