Sunset Kayaking Mangrove Adventure

This kayaking tour does both; kayaking and seeing the beautiful Malaysian mangroves. You get to see the gorgeous sunset whilst floating in the middle of the sea, plant a baby mangrove, visit a floating fish conservation platform (and get dinner there) and visit a secret hidden beach. If you want the best of the best then this is the tour for you.

An Incredible Langkawi Mangrove Kayaking Tour - Possibly The BEST There Is!

How To Choose A Langkawi Mangrove Tour

There are two ways in which you can enjoy a Langkawi mangrove tour; by motor boat or by kayak. These two options are quite different and both come with significant pros and cons.

Kayaking offers a much closer and more personal experience in the mangrove forests but, of course, requires you to put in some physical effort. On the other hand, a boat tour allows you to sit back and relax but you will not be able to go down the more secluded areas of the mangrove.

In this guide, we will look at and compare the different options so you can make your decision more easily. All of the tours we talk about will have links to book so remember to check prices and availability by clicking through!

Kayaking Lankawi Mangrove Tours

Mangrove forest kayaking.

This Langkawi mangrove tour is unique as it actually has both boat and kayaking during the tour. You start by traveling through the mangrove river to a bat cave where you will see sleeping bats in their natural habitat.

You will then travel to a floating fish farm where you will get to see many different species of fish that live in the waters in the mangroves. After this, you will have a quick kayaking demonstration and start the kayaking section of this experience.

Floating fish farm on a langkawi mangrove tour

The kayaking part of this Langkawi mangrove tour is roughly 2 hours which is a good amount of time for all ability groups. You will explore the mangrove forest with a guide who will try to spot and show different species of flora and fauna throughout the trip.

After this, you head back to the floating fish farm where you will have a set lunch before being taken back to the mainland by boat. This is a very good tour for a family or anyone wanting to get the best of both worlds, kayaking, and boating.

Key Information

  • Tour Duration: 4 Hours
  • Pickup Included: Yes (if selected)
  • Age Suitable For: Any (I recommend 8+)
  • Tour Pace: Medium
  • Start Time: 09:00
  • Lunch Included: Yes (if selected)

Kubang Badak Mangrove Kayaking Tour

This tour is quite similar to the one above but there is no boat a the beginning. Instead, you go straight into kayaking from the start which means that you are kayaking for a lot of the 3.5 hours. There is also no floating fish farm which means even more time to explore the mangroves on the water.

They do visit the bat cave and provide lunch after kayaking which is exceptional considering the lower price of this tour compared to some of the others on this list. After lunch, they also take you down to a secluded swimming hole where you can have a dip in the cool water.

Mangrove fingers on a Langkawi mangrove tour

I think that this Langkawi mangrove tour is much more suited to the adventurous type, so if you’re looking for more activity and less standing around then this is the tour for you. You don’t have to be super fit to do it either!

  • Tour Duration: 3.5 Hours
  • Pickup Included: No
  • Start Time: 09:30
  • Lunch Included: Yes

Mangrove Kayaking Sunset Adventure

This is the top recommend Langkawi mangrove tour in this article and it gets this for good reason. It does everything the other tours do plus a little bit more. You start by kayaking from the jetty over the river to plant your own baby mangrove. Not only do you learn about the mangroves but you also get to contribute to their continued survival!

Then you kayak over to a floating fish conservation platform where you get a demonstration and tour around the platform showing you the different fish that live in the nearby area and then eat lunch. After this, you head out to more open water where you find a secret beach where you can have a quick dip and swim in the perfect tranquility of the area.

You finish by kayaking through the blue lagoon, a small mangrove forest, and finally, watch the sunset in the middle of the sea. The kayak back to the jetty is in the dark which is even cooler in my opinion.

I admit, other Langkawi mangrove tours in this list have more time in the mangrove forests themselves but this tour beats all the others for pure enjoyment. It is also quite a lot of kayaking so make sure you’re ready for it!

  • Tour Pace: Fast
  • Start Time: 16:00

Kilim Adventure Mangrove Tour

This is another great Langkawi mangrove tour that includes lunch at a floating restaurant and hours of floating through the incredible mangrove forests with experienced guides. This tour is 4.5 hours long so you will be doing more kayaking than some of the others on the list so be aware of that.

The groups can also get quite a bit bigger than the other tours but this also comes with lower prices! If you consider that the price includes both lunch and pickup/drop off from your hotel then it becomes very tempting.

Overall this is a great way to see the mangroves so make sure you check out the prices right here.

  • Tour Duration: 4.5 hours
  • Pickup Included: Yes
  • Age Suitable For: 8+

Click here to check availability and prices

Half-Day Mangrove Kayaking

This Langkawi mangrove tour is essentially identical to the first in this list (Mangrove Forest Kayaking). You take a boat over to the fish farm, go kayaking, see the bat cave, etc. I have included it as others may be fully booked so this is another great option.

This tour does not have the option of including lunch so you save some money there but if lunch is a necessity then take a look at some of the others. This operator does have the ability to book a private tour though! So if you have a group of 8 of you then you can make it private just for your group which is cool.

  • Start Time: 10:00
  • Lunch Included: No

Motorboat Langkawi Mangrove Tours

Half-day mangrove safari boat.

This Langkawi mangrove tour starts by motoring over to see the gorgeous mangroves and the bat cave and then makes its way over to see the sea eagles and a floating fish farm. You are then driven over to a gorgeous white sand beach for a quick (30-minute) swim in the crystal blue water and then finally back to the fish farm for lunch.

This is a well-paced 6-hour tour that packs a lot into a decent amount of time. The price is also probably the most tempting out of all the Langkawi mangrove tours on this list considering what you get (that also includes pickup/drop off).

  • Tour Duration: 6 Hours
  • Age Suitable For: All

Tanjung Rhu Mangrove Tour

This boat tour of the Kilim Geoforest Park includes a tour of the mangrove forest, a visit to the bat and crocodile caves, and lunch at a floating restaurant. It is a little shorter than the tour above so this comes with a small discount on the price.

I actually recommend the Half-Day Mangrove Safari Boat tour above as it comes with a few more activities and is better value in my opinion, however, if you are pressed for time then this is a very affordable and great option for people wanting to do something in the afternoon on the same day.

  • Tour Duration: 3.25 Hours
  • Pickup Included: No (can add)
  • Start Time: 09:45

Mangrove Kilim UNESCO Geopark & Cave Tour

I think this is a great option as it includes basically everything of the two tours above and also a cave that you get to go into and travel through. It has some seriously high reviews but I do think that the price is a little higher than the two options above.

It does include hotel transfers from a LONG way away from the activity so this may actually end up saving you money if you are a long way from the activity itself. So, check where you are staying relative to all of these activities before booking so you can maximize your savings!

Pros & Cons Of A Kayak Tour

  • Getting up close and personal to the mangroves.
  • Not adding to the already high levels of boat pollution.
  • The much more adventurous option.
  • More of an experience (in my opinion).
  • Slightly more expensive.
  • Requires physical effort.
  • Not suitable for families with small children.

Pros & Cons Of A Motorboat Tour

  • No physical effort required
  • Get around much quicker, this might mean you see more.
  • The cheapest option
  • Suitable for all ages
  • Cannot visit the small mangrove streams as they are inaccessible by boat.
  • Contributing to the high levels of boat traffic.
  • No as peaceful.

This depends on where your Langkawi mangrove tour is but most of them start in the North East jetty called the Tanjung Rhu Mangrove Jetty. There are very few options for accommodation up there except for luxury accommodation.

The following 3 options are our hand-picked accommodation options, taking different budgets into mind. Remember to check if your tour includes pick-up if you are going to get a hotel a bit further away!

Other Things To Do In Langkawi

Sunset cruise.

We did this ( see the full article here ) and it was one of our favorite activities in all of Langkawi. We even got a catamaran that had a ‘sea jacuzzi’ which is a net that is dragged along the back of the boat which you swim in (much better than it sounds!).

langkawi to mangrove tour

The sunset, the dinner, and the unlimited alcoholic drinks made this one of the most memorable moments of our trip. Check out the exact trip we went on here.

Eagle Square

Eagle Square is a super cool statue of the Langkawi ‘national’ bird, the Brahmini Kite. It is well worth a visit but I would only recommend coming all the way if you are planning to do something in the local area, for example, a sunset cruise.

This is the way we went and had a look because it is quite close to where you leave for these cruises.

langkawi to mangrove tour

Cable Car And Sky Bridge

The Langkawi Sky Cab covers a distance of 1700m and takes you all the way up to the mountains for the best scenery in all of Langkawi. Then, when you get to the top, you can walk the famous Langkawi sky bridge. This bridge spans over the peaks in the mountains and is truly a spectacular piece of engineering. Check out a tour of the cable car and sky bridge here.

langkawi to mangrove tour

Pantai Cenang Watersports

Pantai Cenang has a truly fantastic beach with easily the best watersports on the entire island. If you want to try jet skiing, parasailing, banana boating, and more then this is the beach to go to.

To be honest, if you like the beach then just get down here and spend the day because it really is a spectacular beach to relax and enjoy a few drinks at one of the many bars.

langkawi to mangrove tour

Island Hopping

This is also an amazing activity we did where we got to go to 3 different islands, including the Tasik Dayang Bunting which is a really cool freshwater lake on a small island in the middle of the sea. You also get to see the incredible eagles feeding in the sea and spend time at a secluded beach. Watch the video below to see how amazing our day was and read the full article here!

I highly recommend checking out the exact tour we went on as it was incredible.

The Kilim Geoforest Park, guarded by the Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia, isn’t just any park—it’s the star of Langkawi’s Geopark, a hot spot for ecotourism, especially when it comes to the Langkawi Mangrove Tour and Mangrove Tour Langkawi.

Imagine cruising through this park on a Langkawi Mangrove Tour by private boat, ready for an adventure! This place is a wildlife wonderland, home to herons, red eagles, long-tailed macaques, reptiles, and a school of saltwater fish having a blast in the mangroves. Add in the coastal wetlands, dreamy beaches, and islands like Dendang and Langgun—now that’s what we call nature’s blockbuster!

Hold onto your hats because, on the Langkawi Mangrove Tour, you’ll watch white-headed eagles doing their thing while you’re gliding through the forest of mangroves. And guess what’s for lunch? Fresh seafood from local fish farm restaurants! Yum!

If you’re up for some Mangrove Tour Langkawi fun, book with us. This tour isn’t just sightseeing; it’s an adventure you’ll talk about for ages! Escape to this unique and stunning environment that serves up the most beautiful scenery and a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It’s not just a tour; it’s a hilarious, awe-inspiring, nature-filled extravaganza

Explore The Bat Cave

Welcome to the Bat Caves (Gua Kelawar), an epic stop on the Mangrove Tour Langkawi adventure in Kilim Geoforest Park!

Here, the bat squad consists mainly of Malaysian Fruit Bats—don’t worry, they’re not up for a midnight chat. These nocturnal cuties are snoozing upside down, making adorable squeaking sounds that echo through the cave. They’re experts in echolocation, using sound waves to navigate their surroundings.

As you strut across the 100-meter pontoon or footbridge, a strict rule: shhh! These bats need their beauty sleep, so no noisy disturbances! And hey, no smoking either—definitely not their vibe.

Inside, the caves stretch about 750 sq. meters high, resembling a living bat art gallery on the ceiling! Plus, there’s a cool spot where you might need to duck (around 1 to 3 meters high)—watch your head, it’s part of the bat cave dance routine

So, join us on this quirky bat-tastic adventure and witness these adorable night flyers in their natural habitat. It’s not just a cave visit; it’s a whispering, ducking, and awe-inspiring escapade into the realm of these fascinating creatures

Cruising Along Mangrove Forest

After soaking up the bat cave’s vibes for about 15 minutes, get ready for the real adventure! As the boat cruises through the mangrove forest, brace yourself for a jaw-dropping spectacle. Picture this: lush greenery as far as the eye can see, emerald waters twinkling in the sun, and that fresh forest air doing a happy dance with your inner zen. Oh, and hold onto your hat and shades—these breezy boat rides might just give them wings of their own!

At a medium speed, the cruise lets you glide along smoothly, letting you soak in nature’s serenity. It’s like a soothing balm for the soul. Keep those eagle eyes peeled! Who knows, you might spot some tree-dwelling reptiles or catch a show put on by the vibrant bird squad soaring overhead if luck is on your side. It’s not just a boat ride; it’s a thrilling, nature-packed escapade that’s as wild as it gets

Eagle feeding during your Mangrove Tour Langkawi? Get ready for a serene, tranquil experience that’ll soothe your soul and leave you in pure awe.

As our boat gently glides through the waters, the engines purr softly, setting the stage for a serene encounter. We sprinkle chicken skin not for thrills, but to invite our graceful eagle friends for a calm, peaceful coasting session.

Ever wondered why these majestic creatures gather around us? It’s a feast! Fishermen toss out small fish, creating a delightful banquet for these regal birds.

Now, picture this tranquil scene: the sky adorned with these magnificent beings, showcasing their effortless flight. Among them, the enchanting Brown-winged Kingfisher, a true symbol of Langkawi’s natural beauty, and the elusive Red Eagle, a mystical sight exclusive to this paradise. This is an opportunity for nature enthusiasts to witness the tranquility of Langkawi’s Red Eagle during their Mangrove Tour Langkawi.

It’s not just about birdwatching; it’s about basking in nature’s calming embrace, witnessing the beauty of the world in its most peaceful form. Join us for this relaxing journey where the majestic flight of these eagles becomes a melody of tranquility.

Guess what? The Crocodile Cave, or Gua Buaya, is no ordinary cave—it’s a stone-cold crocodile lookalike! Picture this: its entrance resembles a giant croc, from snout to tail, with a mouth and teeth to boot as you exit. Just watch out, it might give you a playful snap!

This cave’s a celeb in Kilim Geoforest Park, where the Kilim River smoothly flows. But here’s the scoop: it’s only party time during low tide when the river connects the dots, making this place the hotspot. Back in the day, it was the rumored hangout spot for crocs, but now it’s a chill pad for funky limestone formations and a bat crew that calls it home.

So, join us for a mind-blowing fact: the Crocodile Cave isn’t just a cave—it’s a croc-shaped hangout where limestone and bats party together. Talk about a funky twist in nature’s tale

As we sail onward through Kilim Geoforest Park after our jaunt through the Bat Cave, you’ll notice the boat gradually slowing down as the canal starts to narrow. Ahoy, we’ve reached the Monkey’s Home! Keep your eyes peeled along the riverbanks—you might catch a glimpse of these cheeky fellas, often with their families in tow.

Our skilled boatmen will aim to get us as close to the banks as possible. Don’t be taken aback if a few curious monkeys hop aboard! They’re on the lookout for a snack, and guess what? You’re their ticket to a treat! Channel your inner babysitter as you help them sip from a mineral water bottle. Trust me, they’ll love it! These monkeys are the friendliest bunch around, so sit back, relax, and enjoy this unique, up-close encounter

Snorkel Or Fish Feeding Dangli Island

It’s a 20-minute boat ride to reach Dangli Island, slightly outside Kilim Geoforest Park. This spot’s so cool; on a clear day, you can even catch a glimpse of Thailand from here! And when the water’s crystal clear, it’s like looking through a window to an underwater paradise—corals and colorful fishes galore

Snorkeling’s the name of the game, folks! Snag your snorkel set, or if you’re without one, no worries—rentals are available at the jetty. Splash into the water and dive in for an underwater adventure. Fish buddies are eagerly awaiting your visit! But hey, if you’d rather stay dry, share some crackers with them instead.

At Dangli Island, there’s no sandy beach to laze around; it’s a massive limestone structure rising from the sea. All the fun and action happen right from the boat. So, whether you’re diving into the water or chilling on deck, get ready for an aquatic escapade unlike any other

Private Beach

After your splashy adventure at Dangli Island, hop aboard as we whisk you away to the private beach along Pantai Pasir Panjang. Brace yourself for some seaside bliss! This spot’s a gem—a few beaches facing the Andaman Sea with jaw-dropping vistas.

You’ve got about 45 minutes to soak in the sun, take a dip, or even set up a lovely picnic with your favorite person. Picture this: no buildings, no crowds—just you and fellow travelers soaking up the serenity. Remember, it’s our own slice of paradise, so let’s keep it pristine. Please, no littering! Let the little ones go wild building sandcastles and having a blast. And hey, rest assured, it’s all perfectly safe for a worry-free beach day

Hey photo enthusiasts! Listen up for the ultimate tip at Kilim Geoforest Park—a killer pic spot! Look out for this cool thing on the ancient limestone wall—it’s like a massive turtle rock just hanging out up there!

This spot’s a must-snap for your family album—a solid proof that you’ve hit up Kilim Geoforest Park! Our boat crew’s got your back. They’ll steer us just right so you can grab a pic with this epic turtle-shaped backdrop. Get ready to strike a pose and make it a memory worth sharing

Floating Restaurant and Fish Farm

After sailing for what felt like ages, we finally roll up to the floating restaurant hooked onto the fish farms. But before you get cozy, there’s a sneak peek lined up! The crew’s all about showing off the A-listers—the stingrays, groupers, seabass, and their fishy pals, chillin’ right up close. These guys are the real deal, destined for the plates at the restaurant, making it the freshest seafood fiesta you’ll have in Langkawi!

Quick rundown: spend about 10 minutes getting to know the underwater celebs, then it’s grub time at the restaurant (your treat, of course). And hey, veggies in the house? Just give ’em a shout-out, they’ll sort something special for you. Not feeling the restaurant vibe? No sweat! Just tell your boat crew, and you can hop back aboard. Talk about options, right?

An introduction to the mangroves of Langkawi’s Kilim Geoforest Park

The northwestern corner of Langkawi is draped by the mangroves of Kilim Geoforest Park , one of the three main areas associated with the Langkawi Geopark, the first geopark inscribed by UNESCO in Southeast Asia in 2006.

At Kilim, a sprawling mangrove forest meets ancient gigantic limestone rock formations that formed some 500 million years ago. The beauty of Kilim is its stunningly diverse natural geological, biological and cultural resources. It’s also the only place in Malaysia where coastal karst formations coexist with mangrove ecosystems.

A visit here is one of the top experiences to have in Langkawi — and we believe that the best way to experience Kilim Geoforest Park is by paddling on a kayak.

The reason? You can’t get closer and more personal to Langkawi’s mangroves than by floating right next to them, peeking at their habitat of fish, insects, and water snakes.

How to reach Kilim Geoforest Park’s jetty?

First of all, check out our detailed guides on Langkawi Airport , going from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi and from Penang to Langkawi .

If you want to ride a ferry to Langkawi, see the latest info on the ferry from Kuala Perlis to Langkawi .

The Kilim Geoforest Park jetty is in the northeastern part of Langkawi, near the village of Ayer Hangat and on the way to Tanjung Rhu.

It’s pretty far from Pantai Cenang and Kuah, and you’ll need your own transportation — consider renting a scooter in Langkawi here or hire a taxi.

Here is a map of Kilim Geoforest Park’s jetty:

This is where most boat and kayaking mangrove tours in Langkawi depart.

Langkawi Mangrove Tour in a nutshell

Langkawi mangrove tour kayaking

Going on a tour of Langkawi’s mangroves is best done with operators who know the area inside out and propose eco-sustainable business practices in line with Langkawi’s post-pandemic reopening green targets .

German-owned Dev’s Adventures is one of Langkawi’s most established and eco-savvy tour operators who pioneered guided kayaking tours of the mangroves and their smaller, inner canals. For four hours, you’ll sample first-hand what it means to float in one of Malaysia’s oldest and most interesting ecosystems.

Climb into a kayak and take off through the mangrove forest to observe local flora and fauna like sea eagles and kites, kingfishers, herons, mudskippers, fiddler crabs and monitor lizards. A guide will escort you, leading the kayak expedition. Most tours include lunch at a floating restaurant, where you can also visit a small fish farm.

Getting ready for a Langkawi Mangrove tour by Kayak

langkawi to mangrove tour

Dev’s Adventure Tours can organize transport from your hotel to Kilim Geoforest Park. If you prefer to use your own to go somewhere else in northern Langkawi after the mangrove tour, you’ll need to get there by 9 am to meet with your guide.

Let me tell you that their guides are one of Dev’s Adventure Tours’ highlights — locals who speak perfect English and have a deep knowledge of the mangroves, the sea, and their inhabitants. My guide was Haris Mukmin, a young and enthusiastic guy who met us and the rest of the group at the jetty.

Haris whisked us immediately on a bumboat for a short ride to the fish farm-cum-restaurant where we switched to our kayaks — couples may opt for a two-person kayak and paddle together.

Haris explained the basics of paddling and safety before letting us loose in the water. He also handed out our Sippys — the reusable glass water bottles that Dev’s Adventure Tours provides to each of their customers to avoid single-plastic waste.

After a few spins and adjusting to our new vehicles, we all followed Haris across the channel and into the deep of Kilm’s mangroves.

Kayaking the smaller canals of Langkawi’s mangrove coast

langkawi mangrove tour

My favourite part of the Langkawi Mangrove tour was following Haris off the main waterway and into the side canals that criss-cross Kilim’s large network of mangrove forests.

We immediately started navigating along small canals where we had to proceed in single-file, for a kayak at a time was barely enough to slide through. The mangroves closed in on both sides, giving us a unique opportunity to observe this unique ecosystem up close. Haris was very attentive and skilled in pointing out aspects of the local ecology and natural environment.

Crossing the Kilim Geoforest Park

langkawi to mangrove tour

After paddling within the forest, most Langkawi mangrove tours return to the main sea channels where guests can marvel at the geologic formations within Kilim Geopark. Seen from the water level, the looming karsts are amazing.

At one point, Haris asked us to slide towards the mangrove coast, secured our kayaks to it with a rope, and let us take some time to rest and swim all around. It was very refreshing after having worked on the paddles for a couple of hours.

How a Langkawi Mangrove Tour ends: Lunch and Getting Back

The tour finishes back at the starting point — a floating fish farm that also serves as the simple restaurant where you’ll have your lunch. After leaving the kayaks, we enjoyed a lunch of fried rice with seafood — you can also choose meat or just vegetables.

After a relaxed hour for lunch, we spent some time watching the fish farm’s enclosures. It’s a bit of a sad spectacle because you know well that those fish will end up on a plate, but we were able to observe some rare species, including a horseshoe crab.

The bumboat picked us up again from here and whisked us back to the Kilim Geopark headquarters in ten minutes. We were ready to leave on our rental motorbike by 2 pm.

Langkawi Mangrove Tour: Final Thoughts

langkawi to mangrove tour

The beauty of Langkawi is its nature, and a mangrove tour by kayak is possibly one of the best ways to get out and explore it.

Striking out in the morning allows for spending a beautiful half-day on the water checking out the mangrove coast up close, and getting back to Cenang by early afternoon to continue watersport activities , a sunset cruise , or just chill with a sundowner on the beach.

Langkawi mangrove tours by kayak are recommended for families and couples alike. If you have small children, you can ride with them in a two-person kayak, and let them try some little adventure.

Langkawi Mangrove Tour: A Stunning Introduction To The UNESCO Site

Langkawi is a famous island worldwide. In addition to being absolutely stunning, the island is also a UNESCO heritage site. There is a lot to do in Langkawi as the UNESCO heritage site is huge and has multiple facets to it. One of the best ways to see its beauty up close is to head out on a Langkawi mangrove tour.

You’ll find that there are a variety of packages that are available based on the amount of time you want to spend in the area. Each package takes you to different parts of the UNESCO heritage site. From the bat caves to the crocodile cave, you will find a lot of intriguing things to explore. It was one of the highlights of our 3 days in Langkawi.

Table of Contents

Mangroves in langkawi.

Located to the north east of the island, the mangroves of Langkawi are a unique ecosystem and provide a stunning contrast to the towering limestone peaks in the background. If you haven’t seen mangroves before, know that these plants grow along the riverbanks.

Their long roots are what make them special. They hold the soil together preventing soil erosion on the river banks. Mangroves are also great for the fish in the river. They provide a spot for the fish to lay eggs and for the babies to hatch and hide from predators.

Today the mangroves in Langkawi are protected. A couple of years ago, they were harvested for charcoal. At least that was what our guide told us.

The Kilim river winds between the mangroves and into a couple of caves too. Some of which you may be lucky enough to enter.

One interesting thing to do in the mangroves of Langkawi is to notice the roots of the mangroves. You will notice water marks. These will tell you just how high the tide rises.

Langkawi Mangrove Tour Price

As I mentioned before, the Langkawi Mangrove tours are divided based on the number of hours you want to spend in the area. There are four different packages. The smallest being one hour and the largest being four hours.

We chose the two hour tour which took us to five different locations: The Eagle feeding area, the fishing village,  the Arabian sea, the crocodile cave and the bat cave.

There are three ways of booking your Langkawi mangrove tour.

Book the tickets at the jetty point in Kuah: Here they charge you 100 MYR per person for 3 hours. Note that this is sharing a boat and not a private one.

Head to the Kilim Geoforest park: You can book your Langkawi mangrove tour from here directly. Note that from this location you can only get a private boat. A great way to reduce the costs is to go with a large group. The rates here are 250 MYR for 1 hour, 350 MYR for 2 hours, 450 MYR for 3 hours and 500 MYR for 4 hours.

Book your tickets online : This is great because you don’t have to waste time heading to the jetty the prior day. You can also avoid the lines in Kilim Geoforest park during peak season.

Best Time Of The Day For A Langkawi Mangrove Tour

It is hard to give an exact point of time in the day that is best for a Langkawi mangrove tour and that is because of the changing tides. You don’t want to head out during either low or high tide because it makes some areas of the park inaccessible.

Crocodile cave is one such example. Too high waters means that the cave would fill up. Too low waters and the boat will get stuck. We were extremely lucky because we picked the perfect time. Were we an hour late, we would not have been able to enter.

In general, the Langkawi mangrove tours are packed during the morning hours. The evening hours however see fewer tourists. The last tour booking occurs at 5pm.

Don’t expect an epic sunset however. Our guide explained that the sunset views are blocked by the limestone peaks as the last groups are usually on their way back.

Langkawi Mangrove Tour

As I mentioned before, the Langkawi Mangrove tour that we chose was the 2 hour package. It was a great introduction for the kids to boats, mangroves and sea life! Once you book your tour at the counter, you will find yourself ushered to a buggy (they charge you 1 MYR for this and you don’t really need it unless you have mobility issues.).

The jetty is a clean, easy to access spot with a lot of boats docked there. You also get your first views of the mangroves here. Once you hop on board, your guide will introduce himself and hand out lifejackets should you want them.

Langkawi Mangrove Tour Stop 1:  The Crocodile Cave

Crocodile cave was our first stop on our Langkawi mangrove tour.

Crocodile cave was our first stop on our Langkawi mangrove tour.

Our guide Fikhir took us straight to the crocodile cave. As we explained before, the tide determines whether you can enter the cave or not and he made sure we did not miss our golden opportunity.

The crocodile cave does not contain crocodiles mind you. It gets its name from the rock formation on the outside of the cave that resembles the snouts of crocodiles. The inside of the cave does harbor bats though.

One interesting thing that the Fikhir showed us at the entrance of the cave was Archer fish. These fish are found in the mangrove area and are famous because they spit water at great heights. The force of water is meant to knock out insects for them to eat but you can also get a face full of it if you are peering out of the boat.

Fun fact: Full grown archer fish can spit water up to a distance of 3 meters!

Langkawi Mangrove Tour Stop 2:  The Fishing Village

The Langkawi mangrove tour also included a stop at a fishing village.

The Langkawi mangrove tour also included a stop at a fishing village.

The second stop was at the Fishing village. This floating village is really intriguing. With huge nets sunk into the ocean, the fishing boats bring their catch here to release. The fish are allowed to remain in the water until such time as they are needed for consumption.

Here we saw crabs, lobsters, grouper, snapper and a different species of tuna that we had never seen before. The kids even got to touch and see a horseshoe crab.

The fishing village that we visited also had a floating restaurant. We were told that we could place our order and that the food would be ready for us when we finished our tour. It wasn’t something that we did so I can’t give you a review of what it was like.

Langkawi Mangrove Tour Stop 3:  The Eagle Feeding Area

Eagle watching is one of the main activities on the Langkawi mangrove tours.

Eagle watching is one of the main activities on the Langkawi mangrove tours.

Langkawi is known for its eagles. In fact, in the local Malay dialect spoken on the island, Lang means eagle. Kawi is a kind of stone whose color matches the color of the eagle almost perfectly.

The mangroves in combination with the tall limestone peaks make a great place for the eagles to nest and live. The river provides them with all the fish they need while the peaks provide their young with protection from predators.

The Eagle feeding area is popular. Guides throw chicken skin to attract the birds. According to our guide Fakhir, the guides in the area are conscious of how much they feed the birds and don’t throw a lot of food out. If there are multiple boats in the area, only one guide will feed them. This is to ensure that the birds don’t lose their hunting instincts.

The Eagle feeding area is a rather peaceful place. If you are lucky, you can spot as many as 40 eagles flying overhead simultaneously. There are two main species that you will see here. The White Belly sea eagles are hard to miss. They have a huge wingspan which can reach as high as 1.3 meters. This is why these birds can be seen outside in the Arabian sea too.

The Brahminy kite is brown in color, much smaller and is usually seen in the mangrove area. This kite has a smaller wingspan which is around 0.6 meters.

Langkawi Mangrove Tour Stop 4:  The Arabian Sea

Some of the Langkawi mangrove tours take you to the Arabian sea.

Some of the Langkawi mangrove tours take you to the Arabian sea.

With the first three stops out of our way, we headed out to the Arabian sea. This is where you will catch a glimpse of the famous Kilim Geoforest sign. If you are lucky like us you will even get to see dolphins frolicking in the water.

From this area, you can catch a glimpse of Thailand. I kid you not! There is even a ferry that takes you from Langkawi to Thailand which was stopped due to Covid.

Fun fact: One of the islands in the bay looks like a shoe and hence is called Shoe island!

Langkawi Mangrove Tour Stop 5:  The Bat Cave

Langkawi's bat cave is a popular attraction too.

Langkawi’s bat cave is a popular attraction too.

The Bat Cave or Gua Kelawar is one of the biggest attractions in the area. The cave is home to hundreds of bats. You would need a torch to explore this area not just to see the bats but to also make sure you have a good footing.

A boardwalk takes you through the mangroves of Langkawi. You will find a number of monkeys playing in the area. Make sure you do not feed them. The monkeys have been known to attack tourists for food.

The bat cave is impressive. The high domed structure is filled with stalactites and stalagmites. The roof is dotted with hundreds of tiny bats. These bats are great for the mangrove ecosystem because they eat the fruit and drop the seeds through their poop in various locations.

With the last part of our tour done, we headed back to Kuah happy content and really tired. In hindsight, there are a couple of things that I would have carried to make the journey easier.

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B07WNL1JG7&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=loberove 20&language=en US

Water: I always recommend carrying a water bottle wherever you go. Langkawi is hot even at the best of times and you can dehydrate really quickly. Plus carrying your own water bottle means that you can fill it up wherever you go. Less plastic wastage and you save a lot on not buying bottled water!

I’m completely fascinated by the new collapsible water bottles !

They fold down neatly so that when they are not in use they occupy almost no space. If you are person like me who loves to travel ultra light, this something that you will love.

Hat: Don’t forget to take your hat along. That and a pair of sunglasses. As I mentioned before, the heat does get to you.

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B07G4YHJPB&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=loberove 20&language=en US

The boat has a covered area that protects you from the worst of it but if you intend to sit in an unshaded area for those iconic pics, it is going to feel like a sauna!

Shawn swears by his Oakley’s . They have become an iconic part of his wardrobe.

I haven’t found the perfect pair yet and unfortunately for me, the ones I had broke during our Langkawi Mangrove Tour. So there’s that. I guess it is time to shop for something different.

Sunscreen: Always carry sunscreen. I personally prefer reef safe options especially since we get into the water to check out the coral. I also find it easier on the skin. You however need to do you. See which one works for you and make sure to test it beforehand so you know if you have any allergies to the contents.

A snack for the kids: This is a bit variable and in a way it depends on how long you plan to be out on the water. If you take one of the longer Langkawi Mangrove tours you probably should take snacks for the kids.

Welcome to Langkawi Mangrove Tour Kilim Geoforest Park. It is a fun tour suitable for all ages. Book for private tour of Langkawi Mangrove Tour Kilim Geopark Langkawi.

Langkawi mangrove area actually consists of three river estuaries. there is also a bat cave within the kilim geoforest park mangrove in langkawi a favorite stop for tourists. limestone, inherently porous, forms caves and there are several in the mangrove tour langkawi..

Back to the mangrove tour Langkawi, you will make a stop at Bat Cave. The boatman will berth the boat closely to the jetty, so you can step out to the stairs that lead to the cave mouth. Walk along the walkway to the cave entrance, then enter the cave. Once you inside, you will 'feel' something on top of you. That are the bats. Use the torch light to spot them - hundreds of bat hanging at the cave ceiling. If you snap a photo with the flash on, you will able to see the bats and the cave ceiling clearly on your monitor screen. Keep walking. At the other end, there is another cave mouth, so you just walk straight further and start looking outside of the cave with half round until come to the jetty - the boat is ready to proceed your tour.

Wan Mangrove Tour Langkawi not only with the cave but also a tour to explore and knowing the animal, birds and dolphin. The boat continue to cruise to the mangrove area where the boatman will throw some chicken intestine into the water, in minutes, a dozens of Brahminy Kite fly out from the mangrove trees to catch their 'food'. Snap the flying eagle with your camera. The eagle is flying up and down around the boat. This what they called eagle feeding. Done with the eagle feeding, proceed your mangrove tour to the open ocean, here you can see Street of Malacca. Over there look at the huge signage saying 'KILIM GEOFOREST PARK'. Many people went there to take photo of the signage.

The Kilim mangrove tour  is not end yet, because the boatman will then proceed to the Crocodile Cave. It is a cave but without a crocodile. Unlike Bat Cave, we can meet bats, but not Mr. Croc. During low tide the cave mouth is left open and the boat can easily enter the cave with the boat. It don't have dry floor for you to walk on. Just by boat. Fish Farm is another stop in mangrove tour. Here at the fish farm, people come to see different types of fish and the one that will interest you is the stingrays. Many love to feed them because they are tame animals. But if you opt with 3 hours mangrove tour, we will be going to beach. Over there of course beach activities will take place. Don't forget your swimsuit.

We have also 4 hours mangrove tour and this time we will add one island for you to visit. At Dangli Island, you can feed the fish from the boat. Dont forget to bring bread for fish feeding. If the weather good, you can add on snorkeling activity RM15 per person. However, the add on of snorkeling gear must be made before boat departure at kilim jetty.

If you plan to have lunch at fish farm floating restaurant during the mangrove tour, please do that after you complete the mangrove tour. You can order your food at fish farm floating restaurant during your mangrove tour. Kindly tell the boatman if you want to have your lunch at fish farm floating restaurant, the boatman will drop you there after you complete your mangrove tour.

an aerial view of Everglades National Park in Florida

Everything you need to know about Everglades National Park

Plan your trip to the southern tip of Florida to visit the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States.

Why you should go to Everglades National Park

Sprawling between South Florida’s Lake Okeechobee and the Gulf of Mexico, the Everglades is one of the world’s largest tropical wetlands. About 20 percent of the region is protected within the confines of Everglades National Park , the third largest national park after Death Valley and Yellowstone in the lower 48 states. While the park’s main purpose is preserving wilderness, Everglades also provides plenty of scope for outdoor adventure.

Although technically a wetland , perhaps it’s best to think of the Everglades as the nation’s slowest, widest river—a constant stream of freshwater roughly 60 miles wide, moving at a speed of around 2.5 miles per day as it makes its way south to Florida Bay. The Seminole people called the region Okeechobee (“river of grass”). And while a large part of the Everglades is covered in razor-sharp sawgrass, the region also encompasses mangroves , tropical hardwood hammocks (island forests), pine and cypress forests, freshwater prairie, and various marine and estuarine habitats.

(This ambitious new trail will someday connect South Florida’s two national parks.)

“A visitor with an untrained eye—especially one used to the dramatic vistas of some western national parks—might arrive at Everglades National Park and think ‘What's the big deal?’” says Eve Samples, executive director of Friends of the Everglades. “It's a park that requires you to really train your eye and be mindful and be present. When you do that, you can experience some really incredible and subtle nature.”

Where to find the best views in the park

With elevation ranging between sea level and eight feet, it’s not easy to snatch a lofty view of the park anywhere other than the 70-foot-high Shark Valley Observation Tower . Opened in 1984, the futuristic spiral renders views of up to 20 miles across the Everglades.

Fourteen miles west of Coe Visitor Center along the Main Park Road, the Pa-Hay-Okee boardwalk and elevated shade shelter provides another wide view across the river of grass.

One of the best coastal views is from the second-floor breezeway of the Guy Bradley Visitor Center in Flamingo.

Where to find the park’s best trails

Located near Coe Visitor Center, the Gumbo Limbo Trail (0.4 mile) and Anhinga Trail (0.8 mile) meander through Royal Palm hammock, while the 22-mile Long Pine Key Trails   penetrate the park’s largest stand of native pines.

Cypress trees in Everglades National Park

Dead flat and paved, the 15-mile Shark Valley Trail varies between sawgrass marsh and tropical hardwood hammocks. Despite the name, there aren’t any sharks, just snoozing gators to step around (at a safe distance, of course).

Where to spot wildlife

Flamingo village is surprisingly good for wildlife. Osprey hatch and raise their young on nesting towers beside the marina, while manatees and American crocodile are sometimes spotted in the bay and nearby mangrove channels.

Alligators   routinely emerge from the swamp and sun themselves on or beside the Shark Valley Trail . It’s also a primo bird habitat for creepy-looking wood storks, gorgeous roseate spoonbills, and anhinga “snakebirds.”

Other places to watch gators and birdlife are the Anhinga Trail and Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk   in Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park adjacent to the national park.

(Go on a wildlife odyssey through the Everglades and Key West.)

How to visit the park like a Nat Geo Explorer

National Geographic Young Explorer and conservation biologist Gabriela Tejeda has guided visitors along the park’s Florida Bay coast in boats, kayaks, and on paddleboards.

Her favorite way to explore inland areas is "slough slogging." It entails hiking in knee-to-waist-high water through sawgrass to reach secluded hardwood hammocks   or cypress domes —flora and fauna rich arboreal islands in the sawgrass.

Close up of a gator tail in the high grasses of Everglades National Park, Florida.

When viewed from above, the domes form a rough circle around a pond. “What I didn’t know the first time I explored a dome,” Tejeda recalls, “is that the water in the middle is an ‘alligator hole’—a place where they hang out in the winter when the rest of the Everglades is drying out.”

“[The cypress domes] are unlike anything I had ever seen,” Tejeda continues. “I like to equate them to a fairy tale—a little fairy dome where you just feel like there’s going to be something magical flying around.” No fairy sightings so far. “But I always see owls and alligators and snakes.”

She highly recommends joining a ranger-led slough slog to Double Dome or other cypress domes along the Main Park Road.

Notable activities and excursions

Driving:   The Main Park Road runs through a variety of Everglades ecosystems—freshwater prairie, cypress forest, mangrove, and coastal marsh — on a 38-mile journey between the Coe Visitor Center and Flamingo . Along the way are sideroads to the Royal Palm trails, Historic Nike Missile Site , the   Mahogany Hammock boardwalk trail, and West Lake Boardwalk .

Tours:   Shark Valley offers two-hour narrated tram tours that stop at the Shark Valley Observation Tower. January through April, rangers lead Full Moon/New Moon Bike Rides and other activities.

Narrated boat tours depart from Flamingo and Everglades City . The latter is also homebase for private outfitters offering airboat tours, including Everglades City Airboat Tours. History buffs should visit the town’s small but interesting Museum of the Everglades .

Paddling:   Flamingo and Everglades City bookend the Everglades’ ultimate kayak/canoe experience —the Wilderness Waterway —a 99-mile meander through mangroves and marshes with raised platform “chickee hut” campsites along the way. Everglades City is also the starting point for self-guided paddles along the Turner River Canoe Trails .

Best things to do for families

Bikes & boats:   If keeping kids active is your mission, rent bikes and dodge snoozing alligators along the Shark Valley Tram Trail or explore Florida Bay and the mangroves by boat. Flamingo Adventures   offers canoe and kayak rentals in two-hour increments, as well as full-day pontoon boat rentals.

Tours:   Hop aboard a narrated boat tour of Florida Bay (from Flamingo Marina) or the Ten Thousand Islands (from Port Everglades); or feel the wind in your face during an adrenaline-pumping airboat ride from outfitters around the periphery of the park.

Junior Rangers:   Offered in English, Spanish, and Haitian Creole, the park’s Junior Ranger Booklet features hands-on and self-guided activities including a scavenger hunt to spot wild animals that call the park home.

The park also participates in the Every Kid Outdoors program that provides vouchers for fourth graders and their families in the U.S. to visit the Everglades (and other national parks) free of charge for an entire year.

Where to stay

Hotels: Destroyed by a hurricane in 2005, Flaming Lodge is open again with new waterview rooms. Outside the park, the closest hotels are in Homestead and Doral (on the eastern edge of the park) and Everglades City, Marco Island, and Naples (beyond the western edge).

Houseboats: Modern, six-person, 42-foot houseboats at Flamingo Marina are equipped with a bathroom (and with shower), an indoor galley, outside grill, air conditioning, bedding, and fish-cutting tables.

Camping: Long Pine Key Campground is open November 1 to April 30. Flamingo Campground is open year-round. Both feature bath houses, dump stations, and potable water. Reservations highly recommended. For camping with the comforts of home, Winter Glamping Tents are available November-April in Flamingo.

Wilderness camping is allowed on certain ground or beach sites or “chickees” (elevated camping platforms). Most sites are accessible only by water and all require wilderness permits. Reservations at Recreation.gov .

Here’s what else you need to know

Access: Although the entire coast is open to exploration via watercraft, land-bound visitors have three options for entering the park: Everglades Homestead in the east, Shark Valley in the north, and Gulf Coast in the northwest.

When to visit:   The dry season (December to March) is when most ranger programs and park concessions are available. This is also the best time to see wading birds and other wildlife. The wet season (April to November) is hot, humid, buggy, and has fewer park services.

“Many people prefer the winter for the terrific weather,” says ranger Allyson Gantt. “But each season offers something special. The shoulder seasons of fall and spring are less busy and may offer more solitude. Summer is especially great for boating and other water activities.”

Closures: A multi-year construction project to raise the level of the Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41) often features delays. Shark Valley parking is often full by 10 a.m. Check out the latest road, trail, and parking lot conditions, plus weather and prescribed burning alerts at the park’s   conditions page.

Fishing: Unless you’re under 16 or a Florida resident 65 or older, a state fishing license is required. Anglers casting south of Nine Mile Pond need a saltwater fishing license; from Nine Mile Pond northwards, a freshwater fishing license is mandatory.

Swimming: Swimming and snorkeling are forbidden anywhere inside the park.

Remote control aircraft: Drones, model airplanes, and similar unmanned aircraft are not allowed in the park.

Read before you go:   Originally published in 1947, the definitive Everglades book remains The Everglades: River of Grass ,   by Florida writer and conservationist Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

Are pets allowed?

Because of the park’s wildlife-rich environment—and the potential threat that it poses to both pets and wild animals—pets and service animals are only allowed in parking lots, on boats, and in the campgrounds and picnic areas at Flamingo and Long Pine Key.

How accessible is Everglades?

Among the accessible sites and services are seven trails, all four visitors centers, two developed campgrounds and one backcountry campsite, narrated boat tours, and the Shark Valley Tram Tour. Visitor information via TDD is available at (305) 242-7740.
