Laura Marling is a BRIT Award winning folk musician from Hampshire, England. Her first, second and fourth albums were all nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2008, 2010 and 2013.

Laura Beatrice Marling was born on February 1st 1990 in Berkshire, England and started playing the guitar at a young age. It was her father Sir Charles William Somerset Marling, the 5th Marling Baronet who ran a recording studio and introduced her to folk music. Marling described this experience as “a bit of a blessing and a bit of a curse… I couldn’t slot my self into the age-appropriate genre”. She earned a scholarship to attend Leighton Park School, a private school in Reading Berkshire, where she completed her GCSE’s and joined her older sisters to move to the suburbs of London. She joined various bands that played acoustic arrangements of songs which was dubbed “nu-folk” by the British Press”. She also joined the original line-up of indie folk band Noah and the Whale, but parted ways with the band due to a dissolved relationship with a band member. She collaborated with many artists around this time, most notably The Rakes on their song, “Suspicious Eyes” from their album “Ten New Messages” and Mystery Jets’ 2008 single “Young Love”. This was the same year that she was personally invited to tour with Jamie T after he attended her second solo gig. In 2008 she released her debut EP “London Town” on WayOutWest Records, however, it was her full length studio album “Alas, I Cannot Swim” that was released on February 4th 2008, and nominated for the Mercury Prize. Still at the age of eighteen, she appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and Later With Jools Holland, where she performed “Ghosts” and “New Romantic”.

Her follow up album called “I Speak Because I Can” was released on March 22nd 2010. It featured a little more maturity than the prior release. On March 28th 2010, it endered the UK Albums Chart at number 4, and again, was nominated for the 2010 Mercury Music Prize. Her third album “A Creature I Don’t Know” was released on September 12th 2011, and like it’s predecessor, reached number 4 on the UK album charts. She picked up a BRIT Award for Best British Female and an NME Award for Best Solo Artist.

Her 2013, “Once I Was an Eagle”, surpassed her prior releases and made it to number 3 in the UK Album charts, and 4 on the US Folk Albums chart. It featured the single “Master Hunter”.

She currently resides in the Silver Lake neighborhood in Los Angeles, California, explaining that Americans are “a lot more poetic”.

Live reviews

Laura Marling is probably one of the most adorable artists I’ve ever come across. She may be tough, talented, and a brave performer, but she is, first and foremost, adorable, and it makes her performances all the more charming. Laura Marling is a seasoned performer and graces the stage with quiet confidence. She may look a bit like Dakota Fanning and dress like a schoolgirl, but when she sings, she has a sultry and sophisticated presence. Marling is like a much edgier version of a traditional folksinger, adding intricate, high-toned, Joni Mitchell-esque riffs to many of her songs. Most of all, she knows how to be soft-spoken and still remain interesting, which is why she never fails to keep her audiences captivated.

What is so incredible about Marling’s live performances is that she has the ability to alternate between playing certain pieces with a grand orchestra behind her and others as acoustic solos. Not only does this add layers to her shows, but it also makes it clear to her audience and her fans that she is limited to neither option. At the Hammersmith Apollo in London, she had no reservations about sending the orchestra off stage and taking the audience on with just her voice and her guitar, as she does during her haunting, breathtaking performance of “Ghosts.” This is all part of Marling’s brilliance, and watching her live, no matter how big the venue, always manages to be an intimate experience.

A songwriter who is wise beyond her years, Laura Marling is one of Britain's most acclaimed new artists who captivates audiences globally. Often performing in ornate buildings, churches and cathedrals during visits to her homeland of the UK. The settings suit the show perfectly as Marling appears with just two accompanying musicians and a couple of backing singers, she creates all the sounds with her trusty accompanying guitar.

Beginning with four beautiful tracks that make one lengthy introduction, she thanks the audience for their patience before beginning a powerful rendition of 'Master Hunter' quickly followed by early track 'Ghosts' taken from her debut 'Alas I Cannot Swim'. Her skills as both a vocalist and as an instrumentalist shine in the sparse interior of the cathedral and engage the audience completely.

She shows off her trained chords during an emotive performance of 'Alpha Shallows' and fan favourite 'Sophia' is melodic and poignant. She is a humble performer, often giggling at mistakes either she makes or her band. There is a feeling of warmth throughout despite the cool atmosphere of the cathedral and by the final tones of 'All My Rage' the whole audience are infatuated.

Laura Marling is so damned talented. So musically talented and diverse in her talents and presentation: folk, Americana, rock, pop, classical guitar, alt-country, blues, acoustic, and more.

She has a voice that can sound very comfortsble in several genres and her guitar talents & song-writing carry throughout. Only 27, Marling feels much more mature & comfortable in her skin than might be expected. Her 6 albums since 2008 speak to her drive & their high quality is wonderful to see & to hear for music lovers. If you haven't seen Laura Marling live yet, go!

Support talented young artists, like Laura Marling! Enjoy as she continues to make music & grow. Marling is the real deal.

A lovely atmosphere and here voice was absolutely wonderful! The stage scenografi was really beautiful as well. The only thing that bummed me a bit was the fact that she didn't play any of her old songs. I have been a fan since her first album so I hoped for some old tunes. But I do understand that it was a tour for her latest album.

I had a great time tough, and my friend to!

She has such a lovely voice, but we left when the second number came on because the back up instruments and her seeming to scream into the microphone made for a painfully deafening experience. Profoundly disappointing & we won't be going to another of her concerts - nor probably concerts at the Mayan (a stunning venue), if this was representative of their decibel level.

Laura is an amazing singer songwriter, who tells deep personal stories with her songs. Her voice is hauntingly crisp and her guitar works is perfection. The Moe's Alley show in Santa Cruz was another great performance by one of my favorite artist.

Laura Marling's voice was as beautiful as when I heard her live for the first time, nearly two years ago.

She was at her best, however, when it was just her and her guitar.

She really does sound like Joni Mitchell on occasion.

miranda-richardson’s profile image

She does a little too much speaking in her songs instead of singing, but otherwise it was amazing. Great performer. She played the four-part song from the beginning of Once I Was an Eagle and it was fantastic.

Really good concert, very good sound / acoustics, and a nice compact venue with a really good atmosphere. Staff were friendly and the hall was very accessible, with lots of good restaurants and parking close by.

The route to Song For Our Daughter began in the wake of touring Semper Femina, when Laura stepped away from both her record label and her management, and for the first time in many years found herself without any firm idea of her future.

Instead she chose the unexpected: she collaborated with the theatre director Robert Icke; she formed a duo called LUMP with Mike Lindsay from Tunng, recording and touring an album of dissonant melodic beauty. Then she enrolled in a masters degree in psychoanalysis.

For a time she distanced herself from the idea of being Laura Marling – all of the connotations and associations her own name conjured, and began to explore something new. She realised that the songs she wrote after Semper Femina “felt too much like similar rewritings of other ones – like a writer who’ll write the same book over and over again,” and pushed herself to write beyond the known edges of herself. “And that was quite painful for me actually,” she says. “It’s the first time I’ve made a concerted effort to not just keep writing the same song again.”

The effect of exploring beyond her familiar world – her collaborative experiments and academic studies particularly, has been to liberate her. The next twelve months will also bring a new album from LUMP, and Laura credits the experience of working with Lindsay for a new perspective on songwriting.

laura marling tour

Laura told us….

“Lump gives me a totally different space, it’s just so much easier for me to have a really differentiated persona and the outcome is such a surprise to me.”

Time away has also allowed her to find a new kind of settledness. After many years of touring, and time living in the US and on the south coast, she has returned to London, living one street away from her oldest sister and her niece; her middle sister shares her home; she describes herself as “at a very comfortable place in my life, in a functioning long-term relationship.”

Her first record written away from the road, it is perhaps this contentment that has allowed her to step away from confessional songwriting. “It’s really hard for me to say, but I think that lack of ‘I’ is probably there,” she says.

“I’m aware of being looked at, internally, by the proximity of people around me. There’s a really good Henry Miller quote where towards the end of his life he stopped writing and started painting and said, ‘I found painting to be the only medium by which I couldn’t cause people harm’. I was like ‘I feel you!’”

She has built herself a studio in the basement of her house, where she can spend her time enjoying “a lot of experimenting with sound” in part a result of working with Semper Femina producer Blake Mills, who showed her “how much character you can draw out of sound” and of course her work with LUMP, where her voice is often used as an instrument.

It was inevitable Laura was heading down the music route. Her mother is a music teacher. Her father, Sir Charles William Somerset Marling, ran a recording studio, introduced her to folk music, and shaped her musical taste, an experience that Laura later described as, “a bit of a blessing and a bit of a curse because I couldn’t slot myself into the age-appropriate genre”.

laura marling tour

Laura gained considerable confidence from self-producing 2014’s Short Movie, and though she returned to Ethan Johns to co-produce Song For Our Daughter, she was steadfast in her vision for the album.

“I demoed everything really heavily, and re-edited loads of stuff,” she says. “So I did all of the arrangements, I knew all the musicians I wanted to work with. I mixed the record with Dom [Monks – who has engineered several Marling albums]. And all of the backing vocals on this album I did at home because I wanted no one else’s opinion!”

It is a lusher sound than previous Laura Marling records, with broad sweeps and an abundance of strings by Rob Moose (Antony and the Johnsons, Bon Iver, the National)

“I wanted to indulge in that, I just wanted to let him go free.”

She wanted the spaciousness she had found with LUMP

“Where you’re in an aural world rather than sitting watching something; or like a really great Bill Callahan album where it feels as if he’s in the centre of your brain.”

There is an unexpected melodic poppiness too – there on tracks such as Held Down, Blow by Blow and For You.

“So I was introduced to Paul McCartney at the later stage of my life – I was Lennon. And I really only saw a surface level of Paul McCartney — dyed hair and Converses that I found unacceptable. But then I did the full catalogue of solo Paul McCartney stuff and saw I was obviously wrong. You realise the little things that get you, the little sentiments.”

She describes Blow by Blow then as

“my little homage to Paul McCartney … I was just trying to write a bit more simply and it’s so much easier on the piano because I’m so bad at it, I’m forced to really simplify.”

After several years of recalibration, this year will be another shift for Laura Marling: two new albums, headline tours, and, one imagines, many more collaborations, experimentations and solo adventures to come.

LAURA MARLING gets to the Tramshed in Cardiff next week on Wednesday 13th October. It’s 10 years since she’s been in the city so grab this chance to see her. Tickets are £25 and the gig gets underway at 7:30pm. To get yours, go HERE.

My life is a soundtrack, i track my life through music, photography is my passion, my escape, my expression. Without both i have pieces missing, thankfully i’m blessed and get to combine both. Born in Manchester, lived in Australia for 22 years where i was heavily involved in the Australian Music Industry, firstly in bands (Singer) and then managing bands (all original), I moved back to the UK, Wales specifically 10 years ago and married my childhood sweetheart and life is good.
