Colorado to Aspen Tour

A self-guided bike tour, as the name indicates, is a tour that you conduct without a guide. You can do it on your own, with a partner, or with a group of other cyclists.

However, even though you’re riding without a guide, that doesn’t mean that you are completely on your own. The tour organizer will plan the route for you, book accommodation, and take care of the transfers.

While on a self-guided biking trip, you can ride at your own pace following a predetermined route. You can take detours as you wish, as long as you reach the final destination at the end of the day. That’s why these tours are also called “inn to inn bike tours.”

All best self-guided cycling tour companies offer the following services and amenities:

  • Accommodation: The tour organizer will book accommodation for you. Your task is to get there.
  • Meals: Typically, all self-guided biking trips include breakfasts, while some offer dinner as well.
  • Bikes and gear: Most bike tour organizers will provide you with a bicycle and the necessary gear and tools.
  • Private briefing: You will get all the necessary information about the route at the beginning of the tour.
  • Planned route: Tour organizers will provide you with a complete route to follow, often loaded on a GPS device.
  • Transfers: Airport pick-ups and drop-offs are usually part of the package.
  • Emergency   phone and contact: You usually get a cellphone with a local sim card and phone numbers that you can call in case of an emergency.

As you can see, a self-guided biking trip provides you with all the support you need and takes care of the logistics, so you can relax, ride at your own pace, and immerse yourself in the adventure.

Picture of a Bike on a Self-Guided Bike Tour

One of the best things about self-guided bike tours is that you do not need to do much in order to prepare. The organizers will take care of all the most important stuff for you, you just need to be able to ride the required distance every day. However, that doesn’t mean that you should go completely unprepared since you won’t be accompanied by a guide.

Related: Touring Bikes vs Road Bikes

Here are some of the things that we recommend to consider in order to prepare for your upcoming tour and enjoy it to the fullest.

Learn basic bike maintenance

Since you won’t be accompanied by a guide, you should learn how to fix minor issues on your bike by yourself. For example, learn how to fix a flat, adjust the derailleurs and brakes, straighten the handlebar, and tighten loose bolts.

Get in good enough shape

Bike tours differ in terms of difficulty, so make sure that you are in good enough physical shape to be able to ride the daily mileage.

Related: How To Improve Your Cycling

Learn how to follow a GPS route

Tour operators will provide you with a GPS track or a GPS device that you need to use in order to follow the route. If you don’t know how to do it, make sure to learn before the start of the tour.

Ride in similar conditions beforehand

Some self-guided biking trips include terrain and surfaces you might not be used to. Make sure to expose yourself to similar conditions in order to know what to expect during the tour.

Bring your own helmet

While some tour operators will provide you with a helmet, we recommend bringing your own helmet (and gloves) for hygiene, comfort, and safety reasons.

Related: Best Helmets and How To Choose

Learn how to fuel properly

Since you will be riding without a guide, make sure to learn how to eat and stay hydrated on a long ride so as not to bonk or dehydrate.

Carry a power bank

We recommend bringing a power bank with you if the route takes you through remote areas to be able to keep your devices charged.

Following these simple steps will ensure that you are 100% prepared for your upcoming self-guided bike tour. Riding without a guide is a fun and exciting experience, but it also means that you will need to be able to rely on your knowledge and skills to solve potential problems along the way.

See more tips and tricks in our article on how to prepare for a bike trip .

Not sure whether a self-guided bike tour is right for you? That’s ok, some people prefer the ease of mind and the camaraderie that’s guaranteed on guided tours.

Related: Best Touring Bikes

However, that doesn’t mean that you should automatically discard the self-guided option. Drawing from our own experience, you should give self-guided tours a try if you enjoy:

  • Independence and being alone: If you enjoy being on your own or with a select group of friends, you’ll love self-guided tours.
  • Unplanned detours: If you love taking detours, exploring your surroundings, and finding adventure in unexpected places, this type of tour would give you the freedom you need.
  • Challenges that make the adventure: Things don’t always go smoothly on bike tours, but that’s a part of the adventure. Some people enjoy overcoming challenges.
  • Organizing your own time: A self-guided bike tour lets you be the master of your schedule and spend the day any way you want.
  • Interacting with locals and overcoming language barriers: Without a guide tagging along, you will need to interact with locals to ask for directions and solve issues. That’s a chance to practice a new language and potentially make friends.
  • Taking care of the navigation: Being able to get yourself from point A to point B on your own is a very powerful feeling.
  • Exploring local cuisine: Rather than going to the restaurant chosen for you by the guide, you can choose where to eat or have coffee based on your preferences and needs.

If these reasons convince you to give self-guided bike tours a try, you should take another look at our list of the best self-guided bike tours!

A self-supported bike ride is a ride or a tour in which you take care of all the logistics and do everything on your own along the way. This means you need to plan the route, carry all your gear, book hotels or find camping spots, take care of meals, etc.

Is it better to choose a guided tour or organize a trip by yourself?

If you love being independent and spending time on your own, then it’s best to choose a self-guided tour or organize a bike trip by yourself. However, if you love riding in a group and interacting with people along the way, a guided tour is a much better choice.

Are self-guided tours worth it?

Self-guided bike tours are a great way to spend your vacation in a fun, active, and exciting way. They give you the freedom to schedule the day any way you want without having to worry about the boring stuff such as accommodation or transfers at the end of the day.

Do you need to train for a bike tour?

Bike tours differ in terms of difficulty. Some are very easy, whereas others can be quite challenging. If you haven’t ridden a bike in years, it’s a good idea to do some riding before the trip to get used to being on the saddle and pedaling.

I like how you mentioned that bike tours give you the freedom to travel at your own pace following a route. My sister mentioned to me last night that she is hoping to find bike rentals for our vacation and asked if I have any idea what is the best option to do. Thanks to this informative article and I’ll be sure to tell her that we can consult well-known bike rentals for us to have great memories.

Hi John, That is true! Good luck to your planned journey!

Self Guided Cycling Trips in USA & Canada

Cycling through Pt.Taillon National Park along Lac St. Jean, Quebec

The key benefits to self-guided cycling tours in North America are their flexibility and affordability.

As the name implies, a self-guided cycling trip in the United States or Canada trip means that you guide yourself, which allows you the complete flexibility of setting your own daily travel agenda. Start the day when it suits you and stop to admire attractions for as long as you desire.

Supported with luggage transfers, detailed route descriptions and maps to assist with navigation, self-guided cycling trips will provide you with a heightened connection to your chosen destination in the US or Canada, immersing your senses in the sights, sounds, and tastes of the destination.

After a day of cycling, you’ll find your luggage has been transferred to your next accommodation, typically charming two, three, or four-star hotels or inns that embrace the local flavour and style. With modern 21-speed bicycles or electric bikes supplied, you’ll feel the wind in your hair in no time at all!

Most or our North American self-guided cycling trips require only two people to operate and since we transfer your luggage for you, take care of all the accommodation and bike details, you can leave all your worries behind on the pavement and simply focus on the ride ahead to fully soak up the delights of your chosen pocket of the United States or Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions

what is a self-guided cycling trip.

Our wide range of self-guided itineraries across the USA and Canada have been designed to afford you as much freedom as possible to explore what interests you, at your own pace. We take care of the logistics: we supply you with lodgings in charming inns and B&B’s, mountain huts, and 2, 3 and 4-star hotels chosen for their location and local flavour; we provide route maps and information about sites you can visit; we generally include daily breakfast, packed lunches during remote hikes, and often dinner; we organise for your luggage to be transferred daily; on cycling trips we supply rental bikes – typically modern 21-speed bicycles, with the option to upgrade to electric-assisted (ebike) models.

? How fit do I have to be for a self-guided cycling trip?

Fitness is an important aspect of our trips, with each itinerary carefully-graded for ease of selecting the trip that best suits you. Detailed information, including suggested pre-trip training, can be found in the trip notes and pre-departure information. We recommend that you familiarise yourself with the physical requirements of your trip and speak to our staff if you have any questions. View our trip grading system for more detail as to how we grade the activity levels on our adventures and the suggested physical preparation.

? I’m a solo traveller, can I join a self-guided cycle tour?

On a number of our self-guided tours, transfer services are shared so you will meet others along the way and need only pay the cost of covering single room accommodations. On select self-guided tours which operate using private transfer services, we offer Solo Friendly departures; Solo travellers can sign up on these departure dates and we will match them up with other solo travellers. And, for those who are happy to go it alone, there is an option to pay a solo traveller supplement for private transfer services and accommodation throughout. Please check the trip notes or ask one of our agents for more details.

? Are tips included in my trip price?

Tips and gratuities are not included in the trip cost, unless listed under the trip-specific inclusions. Tipping is customary in the USA and Canada but is a completely personal thing. Guidelines are provided in our pre-departure information upon booking.

? What is included in my trip?

It is our aim to ensure that we incorporate as many inclusions as possible in your trip to minimise any out of pocket expenses while you are away. It is important that you refer to our trips notes for the exact inclusions. On most trips, all meals and arrangements are included from the start of the trip right through until the end.

? Do you have family friendly self-guided cycling trips?

Each family is unique in their interests, abilities, and composition. Many of our self-guided tours are appropriate for families with up to two or three children who are physically active and are experienced with the outdoors. Child discounts are listed, where this is possible given the exact tour itinerary and are generally based on a maximum of 2 children sharing a room with 2 full paying adults. Our guided, small group adventures are typically geared toward adult travellers, but we sometimes make exceptions for mature, exceptional children (12 and older) who are accompanied by an adult. Bottom line: Please ask! If our advertised itineraries and pricing do not suit your family, we are happy to customize a tour just for you.

? Can I bring my own bike?

You are welcome to bring your own bike, if you are up for the challenge of transporting it to your tour destination. If you choose to bring your own bike, be sure you notify us well in advance of your trip and we will let you know if any discounts are possible for that specific tour. We do recommend using the bicycles that are included in the tour package as they are good quality bicycles suited for the terrain on which you will be cycling. The majority of our bicycle rentals are replaced each season and we are always sure to tune them up between uses, so you can feel confident in their performance.

Discovery & Cruising

These are our least demanding trips. These journeys of discovery and cruises involve little or no extended activity and are suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health. The itinerary may take place in remote areas (with basic facilities) and may involve long travel days on various types of transport. Sightseeing may be conducted on foot and all participants should be capable of carrying their own luggage from vehicle to hotel rooms. These adventures rarely involve camping.

Adventure Touring

These adventure tours may visit remote areas where facilities are often basic. Some of these trips involve camping or basic lodging. These adventure tours will sometimes involve long journeys and rough roads. Sightseeing and optional day walks are often included and these days may involve up to 5 hours of physical activity.

These trips involve trekking or walking, cycling, or paddling for up to five or six hours a day at a slow but steady pace and should never be misinterpreted to mean they are easy trips. Hikes are mainly on well-defined trails with undulating terrain and cycling is on mostly flat surfaces.

These trips involve a combination of what is described in our Introductory and Moderate levels. The emphasis is on introductory activity with some moderate components. Hiking trips typically require carrying a daypack only, but could involve carrying a pack of up to 20 pounds (9kg), depending on personal gear.

These adventures involve trekking, cycling, or paddling for up to 6 or 7 hours a day at a steady pace. Many moderately graded hiking trips involve the carrying of a daypack only, though some may involve carrying a backpack of up to 30 pounds (14kg), depending on personal gear. Hikers should be prepared for plenty of roots, rocks, significant elevation gain, wilderness camping, and potential variable weather conditions. Cyclists should be prepared for undulating terrain and some steep hills.

Moderate to Challenging

These trips involve a combination of what is described in our Moderate and Challenging levels. The emphasis is on moderate activity with some challenging components. Hikers should be prepared for very rugged off-trail hiking, significant elevation gain, wilderness camping, and to carry a pack weighing up 45 pounds (20kg), depending on personal gear.

Challenging

These adventures involve trekking, cycling or paddling in remote areas in variable weather conditions for up to 8 to 10 hours a day (possibly more subject to weather conditions and altitude). Hikers should be prepared for very rugged off-trail hiking, significant elevation gain, wilderness camping, and to carry a pack weighing up to 45 pounds (20kg), depending on personal gear.

These journeys of discovery and cruises are suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: Once or twice a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour, for at least 2-3 months prior to departure.

To enjoy these adventures, we suggest you are reasonably fit, healthy, have a moderately active lifestyle and have a positive attitude.

Suggested preparation: Two or three times a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour or more, for at least 3 months prior to departure.

Our introductory trips are not ‘easy’ trips and you will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: 30 minutes of aerobic exercise (either cycling or jogging) three times a week for 3 months leading up to your trip.

On these adventures you will need a good level of fitness and be in good health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend 45 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week from a minimum of 3 months leading up to your trip. This can include swimming, jogging, hard walking or cycling. For hiking trips, hill or stair walking with a 15lb daypack is highly recommended at least once per week.

These adventures require a good level of fitness and be in good health.

Suggested preparation: 1 hour of aerobic exercise, three to four times a week and extended periods of exercise during the weekend. This can include swimming, jogging, hard walking or cycling. For hiking trips, hill or stair walking with a full day pack is strongly recommended at least once per week (or a 30lb pack for backpacking trips).

These trips require an excellent level of fitness and be in good health.

Suggested preparation: 1 hour of aerobic exercise, four to five times per week for three to six months leading up to departure. Hill walking with a full pack in variable weather conditions or on/off road cycling is essential.

On these adventures, you will need to be completely comfortable in adverse weather conditions, have an excellent level of fitness and be in good health.

Genius Loci Travel was founded in 2001, more than 20 years ago. It was founded by two of us, a Dutch man with a vision to promote more sustainable travel designed to benefit local communities, and an Italian woman with a dream to be live and work in southern Italy rather than be forced to leave to find work.

We started offering walking and cycling holidays from our base in Salerno at a time when almost no one in the area offered these.

Before starting to organise tours, we had worked/volunteered in nature conservation, land use planning, rural development and environmental protection. This commitment to nature and environment is tangible in most of our tours and the way we organise logistics and operations.

Part 2: Practical things to know about self-guided bike tours in Italy

Is a self-guided bike tour for you.

If you’re interested in an Italian cycling vacation but find guided tours too expensive and going alone too risky, you might consider a self-guided tour.

Self-guided cycling holidays can generally be selected from a menu of tours that the company offers. These come with pre-planned routes and designated hotel stops. The tour company will handle booking your hotels and transferring your luggage between hotels. They can also arrange bike hire for you if you need it.

You will receive a detailed packet at the outset, containing daily route maps, usually in digital format but many companies can also provide physical copies for the old-school cyclists out there. These maps include clear turn-by-turn instructions, elevation profiles, and overall maps. Additionally, you can request GPX digital files for each day’s route if you prefer using a Garmin for navigation.

With the right operator, the routes will be well-thought out and designed to take in the best of the region. Guiliana from Cicloposse says, “opting for a local Italian operator on a bike tour in Italy ensures you get an authentic experience that makes it easy to discover hidden gems.”

Things to love about a self-guided bike tour

  • All the admin hassle of hotel bookings and luggage transfer is dealt by someone else. You can also save time on route planning – which is particularly handy in Italy. Valeria from Genius Loci Travel points, out, “In Italy, unlike other European countries, there aren’t many specific signposted routes, which means route planning can be tricky.
  • There’s usually much more flexibility with start dates and some companies will even tailor the routes to your requirements, for example providing extensions or shortcuts depending on how long you want to ride each day.
  • You don’t need to wait for the group; you can ride to your speed and stop when you want
  • If you have a problem, companies usually offer 24/7 telephone support.
  • If you pick a local company, you can get the local’s experience. Anna from BikesPlus/Cycle Europe  says “We know the area and the country, we personally test the services (including hotels, restaurants and experiences), and we create the best possible cycling routes and travel experience, as only a local can do.” Mauro from Bike Tour Sardinia echoes this. He says “We can organise meeting the centenarians or the shepherds, have a dinner with them at their houses or other truly memorable local experiences.”
  • And finally, Michele from Bike Basilicata makes the point that “By choosing a local operator, you’re supporting the local economy and encouraging sustainable tourism practices. It’s a way to ensure your travel has a positive impact on the regions you visit.”

Key things to be aware of

  • You won’t have a guide on hand, so you’ll need to be happy following a GPS route yourself and will be self-sufficient for sourcing meals and coffee stops. Normally, however, if you want suggestions, your tour company can share some favourite restaurants and coffee shops with you.
  • You won’t have a support van accompanying you. This means that it’s up to you to reach the next hotel each day, regardless of whether you encounter unfavourable weather or run out of energy/inclination to ride. That said, self-guided tour companies will provide an emergency hotline, and in this case the tour company will assist you as much as they can. For example if you encounter bad weather or run out of energy, they may be able to suggest public transportation or organise a private taxi to pick you up.
  • You’ll be expected to be able to do basic bike maintenance such as changing punctures.
  • Self-guided tours usually have a minimum of just two travellers. This means that you probably won’t be riding in a group. So self-guided tours are great if you like independence and freedom but not so good if you’re looking for group comradery.

Planning your self-guided bike tour in Italy

Select the right region for you.

Italy is a beautiful country full of stunning regions and fantastic food, but you’re going to need to select a particular region to visit. Here are some questions that should help you narrow down the choices.

  • What kind of terrain are you looking for? Flat and gentle or hilly and mountainous?
  • Do you prefer beautiful coastline and coastal towns or immersing yourself in the mountains?
  • Are you a food enthusiast looking to visit a pasta region or do you want to explore a wine region?
  • Are you looking to experience culture and history?
  • Are natural landscapes your priority or do you prefer urban life?
  • Are you after charming villages, picturesque towns or vibrant cities?
  • What level of accommodation do you like? Family-run B&Bs, boutique hotels or luxury hotels?

Best time to visit for cycling holidays in Italy

It’s very possible to cycle somewhere in Italy at any time of year. However, the best time to visit Italy is during spring and autumn. During these seasons, the temperatures are normally not too hot or too cold, the scenery is vibrant and (with a bit of luck) the weather should be ideal for cycling.

In spring, many parts of the country start to warm up, ranging from around 15°C to 23°C . It’s still probably not short sleeves weather until at least late April. Around Easter, Italy gets busier, and prices increase. Be aware that in the high mountains in the north of Italy, many passes will still be covered by snow; often until mid-June. By that time though, much of the south will be gloriously warm.

During the summer months, particularly July and August, temperatures are high, usually around 27°C, but often reaching over 31°C during the hottest part of the day. Visitor numbers are at their peak during this time and it’s worth noting that many Italians take the entire month of August off work. As a result, many businesses close, making the cities quieter.

Autumn brings a gradual cool down in temperatures. September is very pleasant (and popular!), with average temperatures around 25°C. October is also still popular in most parts of the country. You can expect autumnal colours and some sunny days, but also be prepared for wet weather. Towards the end of October, the season ends in many parts of the country, so be aware you may encounter closures.

In winter, the temperatures in the south of Italy usually stay mild. However, northern Italy is typically wet and cold. Many of the mountain passes become blocked by snow and are best avoided.

Choose the duration of your trip

Those looking for a beginner cycling tour often start out with a cycling holiday that’s just a few days of cycling; perhaps 3-4 days. When you aren’t used to multiple days in the saddle, it’s a great idea to start out with this kind of length.

Once you’ve been bitten by the cycling bug, have done a weekend cycling trip and are eagerly planning your next cycling holiday, it’s time to look for something a bit longer. 7 day cycling holidays are probably the most popular length trips.

From there, the world is your oyster and many tour companies happily cater for 10 day, 14 day and even longer cycling tours and holidays throughout Italy.

If you’re looking for a group departure, you then need to find a company with dates to match. Or an operator that offers private departures.

Consider your fitness level and experience

When considering the length of your cycling tour and region you’re going to ride in, it’s important to also consider your fitness level.

Italy’s terrain varies enormously, from huge mountains to rolling hills, hilltop villages, dramatic coastline and easy-going riverside cycle routes. Your legs and lungs need to be up to the challenge if you’re going to take on the more vertical of these options!

During a guided bike tour, you can join the support van or shorten the ride, but on a self-guided bike tour this is usually not possible. To prepare, it’s a good idea to try riding on consecutive days and practice on the same type of bike you’ll be using during the tour. There are significant differences between riding mountain bikes, road bikes, and hybrid bikes.

Bear in mind the average distance and elevation gain you’ll encounter on the tour itinerary, and make sure to experience riding a similar distance before joining the tour.

Research cycling routes and itineraries

One of the great things about asking a local Italian company to plan your cycling holiday is that they are the experts on the routes in their area. They know them like the back of their hand and so can suggest routes that fit what you’re looking to achieve from your trip. Elisabetta from FunActive says “on a self-guided tour, we ensure you’re riding the best routes and getting the most exciting travel experience.”

If you are looking for a DIY tour in Italy, then it’s time to block out some time and dig into the detail in order to avoid the crowded towns and find the quiet roads and beautiful points of interest along your route. There are lots of route planning sites out there and we always suggest checking resources like Google Street View too. You can find more tips here.

You’ll also need to think about whether you’re going to carry your own luggage or arranging luggage transport.

Highway code and travel information

As ever, it’s a good idea to check current travel information before you book and travel. For UK visitors, the UK government travel information pages for Italy are here . You should also read and follow Italy’s highway code.

Tips for going on a self-guided tour in Italy

We asked our panel of Italy cycling experts for their top tips for planning a cycling holiday in Italy. Here’s what they said

  • Elisabetta from FunActive : “It’s not all about the riding; don’t forget to make time for cultural stops and time to enjoy the food and wine!”
  • Guiliana from Cicloposse : “Our top tip for anyone considering a bike tour is to thoroughly assess the difficulty level offered by the company and inquire about the specifics of the bikes provided. A crucial aspect of any bike tour is having access to high-quality bikes equipped with all the necessary gear. It’s essential to evaluate the company based on the information they provide about bike specifications and equipment. By doing this, you can ensure you pick a holiday that gives you an enjoyable and comfortable biking experience throughout your tour.”
  • Anna from BikesPlus/Cycle Europe : “Search for less popular destinations for your Italy bike tour; you’ll be surprised by the marvellous treasures you’ll discover.”
  • Valeria from Genius Loci Travel : “Find out where your operator is based before booking your trip. Are they based in the country themselves or are they reselling someone else’s trip? Because we live in the area and operator our own trips, our guests get the best experiences and can feel they are looked after every single day of their journey.”
  • Mauro from Bike Tour Sardinia : “Have a look at the hotels, not considering just the stars but whether it’s family run and whether it offers something special.”

And finally!

We hope you have a wonderful time riding in Italy. In the comments below, do share your tips for cycling trips in Italy – and also if you’ve travelled with any of the operators mentioned above.

Self-guided bicycle tours

Self-guided individual bike tours have become increasingly popular because of the flexibility and independence they offer. They cost less than guided bicycle tours but still maintain a level of support and convenience that allows you to explore on your own schedule without sweating the logistics.

Be sure to consider your comfort level around navigating a different culture and foreign language, reading maps and signs, ordering food, and dealing with flats or other minor emergencies – some travelers don’t enjoy doing these things for themselves, but others find them the best part of an adventure.

Some of our top self-guided tours

Danube Bike Path (Upscale Lodging) Loved by many, this is the most famous cycling trail in Europe. The route is smooth, stunningly beautiful, and very easy to follow.

Lake Constance Classic The Lake Constance cycle route is the most popular cycle route in Europe. On this tour, you'll cycle around the entire lake and discover three countries (Austria, Germany, and Switzerland) and four islands (Reichenau, Mainau, Lindau, and Werd).

Connemara Lazy Days Cycling This tour is specifically designed for independent travelers who wish to cycle less of a distance and spend lazy days along the way exploring this beautiful region of Ireland.

Medieval Villages of Catalonia This cycling tour is a perfect way to explore the quieter and less-traveled areas of this fascinating region of Catalonia, Spain.

Support and independence

'Self-guided' does NOT mean that you’re totally on your own. While you’ll have more flexibility to ride at your own pace and take breaks at your leisure, the tour operator still organizes the logistics for you.

  • Hotel reservations and luggage transportation from hotel to hotel are included. The accommodations are usually the same as on guided tours as you often follow the same routes.
  • Most tour operators provide a comprehensive information package with the marked route, a detailed route description and tips on sights, cultural highlights, scenic stops, and recommended restaurants. (Note that these info packages are sometimes translated from the local language, and are not always the very best translation. While the materials are adequate, we encourage you to supplement them with advance destination research and guidebooks .)
  • Many tour operators offer a hotline in case of emergencies or problems.

Riding style

Since some self-guided tours have a minimum of just two travelers — or even one — you should not count on riding with a group. For some people, group camaraderie is part of what makes traveling fun. If you’re one of those people, a guided bike tour may be the better choice.

What’s included

  • Breakfast buffet
  • Luggage transport from hotel to hotel
  • Tour description, travel material with route map (usually 1 set per room booked)
  • Detailed route planning
  • Emergency hotline

What’s not included

Unlike guided bike tours, self-guided bike tours (except where noted) do not have an accompanying support van. This means that it’s your responsibility to get to the next hotel every day, even if you head into bad weather or just don’t feel like riding anymore. (If you do run into trouble, though, call the emergency hotline, and the tour company will help as much as possible, whether sending a van or advising you on public transportation options such as trains, boats, or buses.)

You’ll also be expected to fix your own flats. (If you don’t know how, ask your local bike mechanic to show you. Or view our step-by-step instructions ). In the rare case of bicycle breakdowns, you may be asked to take public transportation or a taxi to the next town, where there may be a repair shop that can fix the problem (typically reimbursable by the tour company).

Some companies have spare bikes at 'depots' along the route. In other cases, the tour company will bring a replacement bike, but it may be at the end of the day or the next morning.

Typical day

Quick comparison

Lodging is generally in 3- and 4-star hotels as well as 2-star hotels that are especially appealing—or the only ones in town. The hotels and inns are chosen whenever possible for their more intimate atmosphere and reflection of the history and culture of the area (rather than larger chain hotels). All rooms have private facilities with the exception of certain ships and barges, as noted.

Criteria for hotel categories is standardized in 17 European countries .

Breakfast is included on almost all tours (except as noted), and dinner plans are often available at a surcharge at the hotel or a nearby restaurant (please see individual tour pricing).

Rental bikes and equipment

Rental bikes are generally quite good, but many do not come with water cages or odometers. However, at the other extreme, some tour companies now offer handlebar-mounted GPS. Most companies do not rent helmets due to hygiene/safety reasons. Please bring your own!

Travel plans

Most tours start in the afternoon or evening with arrival at your first hotel. The actual cycling begins the next morning. Start cities usually have easy air or rail access.

Depending on when your overseas flight arrives, you may want to arrive in the departure city a day earlier. You’ll be more relaxed, and you’ll have the chance to explore the city on your own. Likewise, at the end of the tour, there’s usually a final night’s lodging included. You arrive by bike the day before, enjoy a relaxed evening, and depart the next morning after breakfast.

If you can't wait to begin biking, or don't want your adventure to end, consider taking a day tour in your start or end city. You can find all of our bike day tours here: https://www.biketours.com/day-tours/ . Day tours offer a variety of compact sightseeing experiences, allowing you to extend and maximize your cycling itinerary. You can always extend your trip by adding extra nights in the start or end city to explore an area for longer than the included tour dates.

Self-Guided Cycling in Andalucia: Seville to Cadiz

Very well organised tour. The route notes were extremely detailed and helpful as the route was quite complicated some days - presumably to avoid busy roads. However the country wasn’t good for enjoyable cycling, being treeless and agricultural, and apart from the White Villages I really only enjoyed the scenery on the third day from Montellano to Arcos when the route went through the hills and along the river on a good Via Verde. On the last day getting out of Jerez took an hour then soon after it was semi-industrial wasteland. The Via Verde between Seville and Carmona was in terrible condition with deep ruts and sand. I was also unlucky to get a flat- the seal at the tube valve failed- and I had terrible trouble changing the tube- the plastics levers not strong enough and the pump nozzle completely stuck. I left a note to the bike hire.

Fall/Spring Swiss Alps Drive in a Porsche: Pre-set sat-nav guided

Where to begin?! When I discovered EpikDrives, I knew this would be the perfect surprise trip for my husband. Initially the packages and trip seemed “to good to be true” but Stephan was quick to respond to my 1,000 questions. We didn’t find many reviews which made me nervous but booked regardless and ARE WE GLAD WE DID! This turned out to be one of the best trips we have ever taken. Planning of the trip and booking was seamless. Stephan was so helpful and prompt with responses throughout the entire process from start to finish. Once we arrived in Switzerland, Stephan was waiting at the hotel with our supercar on arrival. We were impressed with the ease of everything! We would get into the car each morning and essentially hit “go” on the GPS. Easy GPS guidance to follow along with designated stops for sightseeing, coffee if needed, and re-fueling. We also enjoyed the binder that accompanied with printed out information of the itinerary for each day and description of the different sites or mountain passes. I would certainly give EpikDrives and Stephan a 10+ if I could and we will definitely be taking another trip with them in the near future. Thank you, Stephan, for such an incredible experience!
