Taking a Madison Square Garden tour is the best way to see this famous coliseum-style arena up close. Madison Square Garden (MSG) is a world-renowned performance venue that has hosted some of the biggest names in athletics and is home to the New York Knicks basketball team, the New York Rangers hockey team, and the New York Liberty women’s basketball team.

In addition, MSG regularly holds concerts, comedy shows, and political events, and it has several exhibits chronicling its 130-year history.

The Best Tour of Madison Square Garden

You can explore MSG on your own when you attend an NBA game or concert, but if you don’t plan on going to an event, the Madison Square Garden all-access tour is a great alternative. Personally, we don’t prioritize sporting events, so being able to take a guided tour of the facilities was super convenient.

After all, MSG is part of the fabric of the Big Apple, so visiting the arena is crucial to any New York experience. During the tour, you’ll get a peek at the backstage preparations, player locker rooms, luxury VIP box seats, and other exclusive areas. Below, I’ll let you know what to expect from the tour as well as important information like ticket prices and schedules.

If you’re ready to book and want to skip our Madison Square Garden tour review , you can book your ticket online here . Keep in mind that the tour is included in several New York city passes like the New York Pass , so if you plan on visiting some other attractions, I recommend getting one of these tourist cards.

Why take a tour of Madison Square Garden?

Madison Square Garden is one of the most famous places in NYC and is well worth visiting, especially if you love music or sports. This huge performance venue has 130 years of history and has a prominent place in New York City’s culture.

It’s also an important part of New York’s sports scene, particularly professional basketball and hockey. MSG has hosted several All-Star Games for the NBA, WNBA and NHL, and it’s where Stephen Curry broke the NBA’s all-time record for three-pointers in 2021, scoring his 2,977 th three-pointer.

Outside of MSG, tours of madison square garden

Over the years, the Madison Square Garden arena has seen musicians, comedians, politicians, and other top performers take the stage. Elton John says MSG is his favorite performance venue, and he once held the record for most shows here. Billy Joel now holds that record, with 134 shows.

It’s not hard to see why celebrities love this place. MSG’s coliseum-inspired shape and rich history make it one of the most unique venues in the world, and taking a Madison Square Garden tour is the best way to see its most exclusive areas.

The Madison Square Garden all-access tour

During the all-access tour of Madison Square Garden , you’ll follow a professional guide to see several backstage areas and interesting exhibits.

In the Main Concourse, you’ll see the Garden 366 Retrospective , a visual exhibit showcasing one important cultural moment for every day of the year, including February 29 th . The oldest event is from 1879 when the arena first opened, and this Hall of Fame is subject to change as new moments occur.

Another thing you’ll see is the Defining Moments exhibit , a documentary-style collection of memorabilia, including articles, photographs, and recordings chronicling the 130-year history of Madison Square Garden . Here, you’ll get a glimpse of key moments from the past, like John Lennon’s final performance before his death, Wayne Gretzky’s retirement from professional hockey, and the legendary 1971 boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier.

This backstage tour of Madison Square Garden continues with a visit to more exclusive areas like backstage, the luxury suite, and the Chase Bridge , a catwalk-style overhang under the roof with two rows of seating. From here, spectators get the most unique aerial view of the arena, which is why they’re considered the best seats in the house.

Finally, each tour includes a bonus surprise visit. Depending on the day, it could be the ice rink, a new stage setup, the locker room, or another exclusive area that’s normally closed off to the public.

Our experience and review of the Madison Square Garden tour

Visiting Madison Square Garden is totally worth it, even if you aren’t a huge sports fan or music lover. At the end of the day, the arena is one of the most impressive places in the Big Apple and a crucial part of its cultural significance and history. If you’re not going to attend a game or event at MSG, the tour is a great alternative that will allow you to explore the famous performance venue.

I also think the Madison Square Garden tour is great for all ages since there are parts of the tour that will appeal to everyone. Whether you want to learn more about its history or you want to see the expansiveness of the arena, you’ll walk away satisfied.

However, I do wish that the tour was a bit longer, so we had more time to take photos. The tour is only an hour, so the guides are pretty strict about moving everyone along. Also, I highly recommend getting the New York Pass so you can save money on your Madison Square Garden tour tickets and save money on other nearby attractions like the Empire State Building .

Nicknamed The World's Most Famous Arena, Madison Square Garden is no stranger to being the backdrop for some of the most iconic athletes and musical artists to enter those professions. Opened in 1968, and located in the heart of New York City, the Garden is the home to the New York Knicks of the NBA, New York Rangers of the NHL, and New York Liberty of the WNBA, in addition to countless concerts and shows held throughout the year.

The Knicks are the most high-profile tenants of Madison Square Garden, and the venue has played host to many memorable nights during the Knicks' more successful periods. Memories of the crowd erupting after Larry Johnson completed his four point play against the Indiana Pacers to send the Knicks to the NBA Finals and Willis Reed hobbling out of the tunnel and onto the court to help the Knicks clinch a championship are two of the many great basketball moments the Garden has seen under its roof.

In addition to professional basketball, Madison Square Garden has been the home to plenty of incredible college basketball moments, thanks in large part to its role as the host of the Big East Tournament. 'Cardiac' Kemba Walker's stepback jump shot to sink Pitt at the buzzer helped UConn find momentum before a national championship run in 2011. And Syracuse's six overtime win over UConn in 2009 remains one of the most incredible college basketball games of all-time.

Boxing fans have fond memories of Madison Square Garden as well, with big fights happening regularly at MSG, including Muhammad Ali's first loss in 1971, when Joe Frazier took him out to become the heavyweight champion of the world.

In addition to all of those unforgettable sports moments, music superstars such as Madonna and U2 have taken the stage at Madison Square Garden.

Here’s Where to Watch Billy Joel’s Madison Square Garden Concert Special Online

  • By John Lonsdale

John Lonsdale

Quick Answer: Fans can watch the Billy Joel 100th – Live at Madison Square Garden concert special online for free with trials to DirecTV Stream , fuboTV , and Paramount+ with Showtime .

Billy J o el kicked off his legendary Madison Square Garden residency back in 2014. Years later, the music legend celebrated his 100th MSG show at the end of March, with special guests, including Jerry Seinfeld. Now fans who didn’t get to see the Piano Man’s show in person will get another shot at seeing it all online, thanks to an encore of The 100th – Live at Madison Square Garden concert special.

“There’s three things that make Billy a genius of music: The voice, the music, the writing of the most beautiful songs,” Jerry Seinfeld told Madison Square Garden’s audience at the show in March. “But there’s another thing about Billy that makes him so unique and so special. It’s that we captured how we all feel living in this particular part of the world, Long Island [and] New York.”

Continued Seinfeld: “He is like the companion that we have gone through our whole lives with. His music is our best friend for our whole life. I don’t even think he can understand how much his music means to us being from where we are.”

After getting cut short by two minutes when it initially aired on April 14 due to what CBS called a “network programming timing error,” the Piano Man’s concert special will air once again — disruption-free — today on the network starting at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT. But for Joel’s fans who don’t have access to a tradition cable package, they can still stream the 100th special online. Read on for our streaming guide.

How to Watch Billy Joel’s 100th Madison Square Garden Concert Special Online

If you want to watch the encore of Joel’s 100th – Live at Madison Square Garden concert special, you have a few ways you can tune in online.

Stream Billy Joel Concert Special on DirecTV Stream and fuboTV

DirecTV Stream and fuboTV each carry CBS in their channel lineups, so you can watch the broadcast once again even if you’ve already cut the cord. DirecTV Stream and fuboTV both offer free trials before you have to pay a monthly subscription fee. Fans can score a five-day free trial at DirecTV Stream , and a seven-day free trial at fuboTV .

Stream Billy Joel 100th Concert Special on Paramount+ with Showtime

Another way that fans can livestream the Billy Joel concert special online is with Paramount+ with Showtime . The package lets you watch local channels in real-time, including today’s CBS encore broadcast, starting at $11.99 a month. But best of all, you can score a one-week free trial to stream the Live at Madison Square Garden special before you have to pay a dime.

Following the premiere of the concert special, Joel’s Madison Square Garden run will wrap in July 2024, where he’ll play his 150th show, with tickets still available to purchase online.

Madison Square Garden

Legendary New York-bred singer-songwriter Billy Joel has toured only sporadically in recent years, but fans have plenty of opportunities to score tickets to see him in concert going forward -- if they're willing to head out to New York's Madison Square Garden. Joel signed an open-ended deal with MSG that will have him playing a concert at the venue once per month for as long as there's demand. And demand has never been a problem for Joel at he historic New York venue; he played his first show there in 1978, and had logged 46 concerts at the arena by 2013.  New York isn't alone in its love for the singer. Joel has long been established as one of the top-grossing touring artists in the U.S., and has sold more than 150 million records over the course his four-decade career. After recording a long string of hits including "Piano Man," "New York State of Mind," "Just the Way You Are," "You May Be Right," "Pressure," "Uptown Girl," "We Didn't Start the Fire," and  "The River of Dreams," Joel decided that he was done writing pop and rock songs. It's a decision he's stuck with; it's been more than 20 years since he's recorded a new pop or rock album. He's composed new classical material instead, while continuing to play songs from his catalog in concert.

So far away.

While the performers each deserve 5 stars, the venue is not the greatest for a concert. Petco Park is a great BASEBALL stadium but not for a concert, the seating is so far away from the stage that the performers appear 1 inch tall. Thank goodness for the giant video screens or we wouldn't have seen anything. The sound system was great. The floor seats went out so far to the sides, I'd be surprised if those people on the outer floor sections could see much. At these prices, I would prefer other San Diego venues better designed for these kind of shows. BUT, both Billy Joel and Sting were fabulous !!!

Even with the rain it was fun

My original tickets were awful, and misrepresented. 7 rows back from the front, but the view was 100ft to the left of the stage looking at metal railing and a sign for restrooms. The good news was that LiveNation remedied the situation. We ended up center 35 rows back. What an improvement. The sound was perfect. Sting is still rock star. The music was tight and engaging, although it did come off a bit procedural. Billy Joel, is out there giving it his best, and is still fun and his band is great. Showcasing some of the individual artists from both bands was a great way to demonstrate the level of talent in both bands. Rain or not, I’m glad I didn’t miss this event.

Billy and Sting Are the Men!

Both put on an amazing show! Sting was the perfect opener for Billy Joel. Billy is still amazing at his age, unbelievable he can bring it in his mid 70's. Sound and vision, the video and light production was top notch!

The pros pro concert

Fifty years and better than ever. The band was point on the entire show and the horn section was phenomenal. Billy Joel packs so much entertainment into his singing and playing. The crowd was also into it all night, in spite of rain and cold.

Distorted sound - bummer!

Disappointed in the sound and visual systems at the park. We were in 3rd level and the sound was very distorted. Also disappointed that the concert was not on the big screen. The 2 screens it was projected onto were really only beneficial for the people on lower levels. And then the rain.....Unfortunately we got very wet and had to leave a few songs into Billy Joel's portion of the concert. Good info about PETCO - great for games but would never go to a concert there again.

Billy Joels encore was great, wish it could have lasted longer. Sting was a pleasant surprise. Would liked to have heard Do Do Do Da Da Da.

Great concert/ bad weather

The Billy Joel portion of the concert was wonderful, unfortunately the weather did not cooperate and it rained during his entire performance.

The best of Sting and Billy Joel’s

I have seen both Sting and Billy Joel on their own concerts over a dozen times, but this last tour brought up the best of both, and also their team of musicians, all super good!

As expected

He played a variety of songs, didn’t waste a lot of time talking, he got down to business. The weather could have been better, I believe he was freezing initially.

It was a great concert eventhough it rained on us. I was on the floor secction and the staff was nicer than Elton johns farewell Concert.

cbs madison square garden billy joel 1000th special

Billy Joel fans will get to find out whether Davy is still in the Navy after all. A broadcast special of the singer in performance at Madison Square Garden was cut off abruptly in most time zones Sunday night during his climactic rendition of the signature hit “Piano Man,” and after considerable public outrage, CBS has committed to re-airing the entire program on Friday night.

Popular on Variety

The show started a half-hour behind schedule in the eastern and central time zones because it followed a broadcast of the Masters Tournament that went past its expected end time. CBS has not explained exactly what transpired to have the Joel special get so close to its finish time before the abrupt cutaway. But with some local affiliates upset that the lateness of the Joel special was cutting into their local news time, it would seem that someone made the fateful decision that no one would miss it if they never got to the part of “Piano Man” about how “the microphone smells like a beer, and they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar.”

Wrong, on that score, as even some local newscasters found themselves in the position of apologizing to Joel fans upset to see their faces instead of the singer’s, which was definitely not an instance where they “got us feelin’ alright.”

And west coast viewers, meanwhile, will get a chance to see Joel stick the landing twice.
