SINGAPORE, 26 April 2022 – Since marking the end of travelling restrictions into Malaysia on 1 April 2022, tourism stakeholders from Malaysia rushed to take part in the inaugural Malaysia Digital Travel Fair (MDTF) in anticipation of the travel surge for the upcoming Singapore’s mid-year school vacation.

With over 70 exhibitors offering a wide range of holiday packages to Malaysia, Singapore consumers are spoilt for choice.

“This online portal elevates tourism to Malaysia. This will benefit the Malaysian tourism industry stakeholders with an aim to create business opportunities for travel industry partners, transport operators, and tour agents in Singapore,” said His Excellency Dato’ Dr. Azfar. Malaysia is a Southeast Asian country occupying parts of the Malay Peninsula and the island of Borneo.

It’s bordered by Thailand to the north, Indonesia to the south, and Brunei to the north. The capital is Kuala Lumpur.

There’s much to see and do in Malaysia. The country is home to rainforests, pristine beaches, scenic mountain ranges, and vibrant cities.

Kuala Lumpur is a bustling metropolis with gleaming skyscrapers, while George Town on the island of Penang is known for its colorful colonial architecture.

Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy hiking and rafting in the Cameron Highlands and jungle trekking in Taman Negara National Park.

Travelers can also experience Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage. The country is home to a mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous cultures, and each has its own unique traditions and cuisine.

Visitors can explore ancient Hindu temples, watch a traditional dance performance, or savor a bowl of spicy Malaysian curry.

Malaysia is a convenient destination for travelers. It has excellent infrastructure, with well-maintained roads and a widespread network of airports. English is widely spoken, making it easy for foreigners to get around.

There are also plenty of places to stay and eat, making it easy to plan a trip. Despite its growing popularity, Malaysia remains a relatively affordable destination.

Those on a budget can find cheap accommodations and good-value meals throughout the country. While Malaysia is a great destination for all travelers, it’s particularly well-suited for those looking for an exotic and affordable escape.

Follow our news, recent searches, 'dying to travel': holidaymakers willing to pay more for longer tours despite price increase, advertisement.

Crowds were back at the NATAS fair, which was last held in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

malaysia travel fair 2022 singapore

Natasha Ganesan

SINGAPORE: Prices may have increased for some tour destinations but travellers are still willing to head abroad despite the cost.

The National Association of Travel Agents (NATAS) travel fair, last held in 2019, returned on Friday (Aug 12) for a three-day event at the Singapore Expo. It is billed as one of Singapore's largest consumer travel fairs.

More than 40 exhibitors including travel agents, airlines, cruise operators, hotels and national tourist organisations are involved in the event.

NATAS president Steven Ler said in response to CNA’s queries that the fair will “kickstart the season of safe travels" and pivot industry players back to near full operations.

“As more resources are being deployed, the entire supply chain is activated and businesses are revitalised,” he added.

About 80,000 to 100,000 visitors are expected over the three days, Mr Ler said, almost on par with pre-pandemic visitorship of about 108,000.

When CNA visited the fair around noon on Friday, the crowd was moderate but footfall started picking after 4pm.

malaysia travel fair 2022 singapore

Some visitors were even waiting for doors to open at the start of the event at 10am, said Chan Brothers Travel’s senior marketing communications manager Jeremiah Wong.

“As travel agents, we really feel like people are really dying to travel,” said Mr Wong.

Director of EU Holidays, Mr Wong Yew Hoong said the current travel demand was "even stronger" compared to pre-pandemic peak seasons such as school holidays.

While travel demand is strong, the supply has yet to catch up, he said, adding that airfares for popular destinations in December such as Japan’s Hokkaido have “tripled” compared to a few months ago.

"If they don’t travel this December, it will be next December. That will be four years (without travel) ... They do not want to wait again."

Air ticket prices have also gone up due to the increase in fuel prices worldwide, said Ms Lee Hwee Noi, senior manager of international product development at Hong Thai Travel.

malaysia travel fair 2022 singapore

"PRICE IS NOT A BIG PROBLEM"

Station manager Mr Meswan Satin, who attended the travel fair on Friday, said that he will still opt for tour packages even if they are expensive.

“We understand that the inflation rate has gone up because of the pandemic ... That (is) something that you got to live with,” said Mr Meswan who was looking at destinations such as Dubai and Turkey.

“We have no choice … because we enjoy travelling.”

Assistant general manager of leisure and travel at New Shan Travel, Ms Chris Tay said: “We have not been travelling for quite some time. So I believe during this period of time, they have saved enough so they don't mind (going) further.”

This observation was shared by the Japan National Tourism Organisation (JNTO), which provides travel information to tourists looking to visit Japan.

“Price is not a big problem,” said Ms Hatsume Nagai, JNTO’s executive director for Singapore, citing a survey conducted by the organisation.

She also noted that the travel demand for Japan is “higher than expected”.

Some travel agents told CNA that Japan was among the most popular destinations for the December holiday period.

This is despite the country allowing only visitors on package tours as part of its first phase of reopening which began on Jun 10.

Welcome to Singapore: Up to 6 million visitors expected this year as recovery gains momentum

In addition to seeing more people lean towards longer trips, many travel agencies also reported that more travellers were seeking tour packages that offer more included activities.

“Now when people are travelling overseas, they are more willing to pay for longer trips and better inclusion,” said EU Holidays’ Mr Wong.

Although travellers previously visited multiple countries during their holidays, Mr Wong noted that many now look for more in-depth tours.

Apart from Japan, trips to see the Northern Lights and Turkey were among the popular tour options.

FIRST TIMERS AND SHIFTING MINDSETS

With destinations like Japan allowing visitors on group tour basis, agencies such as Chan Brothers Travel have observed “great interest” for such tours from repeat customers as well as first timers.

“Because they miss Japan so much and they want to travel soon … We are seeing customers switching to group tours and coming to us,” said Mr Wong.

While travel hesitancy is not as strong as when the vaccinated travel lanes (VTLs) began, some still have concerns about travelling.

This has led to many opting for group tours for the first time.

malaysia travel fair 2022 singapore

“They now have a chance to experience what a group tour is like in 2022 and maybe some of that mindset of what a group tour is like can be changed,” said Mr Wong.

“They might be converted for their future travels.”

This shift in mindset also applies to cruises which used to be seen as an activity for "old people", said New Shan Travel's Ms Tay. However, many younger travellers were "converted" after they opted for cruises during the pandemic.

She also noted an increase in travellers booking through agents.

“Before COVID-19, all these people just do it online and off they go. But now they will book from agent(s) although they know there is a service fee,” said Ms Tay.

Ready for take-off at MATTA Fair Penang 2024

Digital skills for the era of IR 4.0 in facing the VUCA world

Putting malaysia on the digital track towards the future, aeon and grabpay join hands in promoting digital-first lifestyle.

Last year's MATTA Fair Penang saw visitors spoilt for choice with the many good deals offered by the travel agents at the fair.

SOME 300 booths promoting international and domestic travel packages at the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair Penang 2024 were all snapped up even before the registration date closed on April 15.

The fair's organising chairman for the third consecutive year, Carolyn Leong, said this indicated the promising growth of the state's tourism industry.

"The booths have all been taken up even before the registration date closed.

"This shows the confidence the travel agents have in the fair, which also augurs well for the state's efforts in promoting local tourism," she said recently, adding that the tourism industry is picking up again and travellers are eager to resume exploring the world.

Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Penang Chapter chairman Carolyn Leong is optimistic about tourism rebound and compliments the state’s efforts in promoting local tourism as well.

She said the fair will not only feature travel agents offering attractive packages to international destinations but also domestic travel agents who will be promoting Penang to Penangites and holidaymakers alike from the northern region states such as Kedah and Perak.

"Therefore, to encourage domestic players, MATTA Penang is subsidising 50% of the booth price for them.

"Besides featuring Penang's attractions and charm as a heritage city, the state's tourism booth will also highlight attractions and holiday spots in other parts of Penang such as Balik Pulau's greenery and durian orchards as well as other activities found on mainland Penang," she added.

The fair that will be held at the Setia SPICE Arena on April 27 and 28, is expected to draw some 35,000 visitors.

Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Wong Hon Wai (centre, in batik) and Leong (on his right) together with industry stakeholders at last year’s MATTA Fair Penang opening ceremony.

The booths set up at the arena and concourse areas will feature both domestic and international exhibitors representing a diverse range from the travel industry including airlines, financial institutions, travel agents, hoteliers, associations, theme parks, wellness spas and other small businesses.

Leong said a sales revenue of RM40mil is expected at this year's fair compared to the RM33mil recorded last year.

"The fair will be a one-stop venue for everyone's travel needs offering fantastic deals, be it domestic or international packages.

"We have Malaysian Airlines as our official airline and RHB Bank has come in too," said Leong, who is also chief executive officer (CEO) of Angel Tours Sdn Bhd.

Attractive prizes await

The highlight of the travel fair will be the lucky draw prizes which will see visitors winning air tickets from flydubai, Xiamen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Scoot, China Airlines, Starlux Airlines, and Air Arabia to destinations like Dubai, Xiamen, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Visitors who buy any domestic packages by securing a RM300 deposit per person will stand a chance to take part in the lucky draw to win an air ticket to a domestic destination while anyone who buys an international holiday package with a deposit of RM1,000 will be eligible to win an air ticket to an international destination.

Besides air tickets, visitors who take part in the lucky draws also stand a chance to win hotel stays, staycations, tour vouchers and admission tickets.

Leong said the fair will feature halal tourism or Muslim-friendly travel packages too which has been gaining popularity.

She noted that the favourite travel packages this year includes China due to the one-year visa waiver programme between Malaysia and China, and other countries such as Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Dubai, Indonesia and Thailand.

“This is due to the increasing number of direct flights between Penang and these destinations, and vice-versa.

“We are also seeing a high demand for Australia, especially Western Australia such as Perth,” she said.

As for domestic packages, Leong said Kota Kinabalu in Sabah and Kuching in Sarawak remain the most popular places for local travellers.

The fair on both days will be held from 10am to 9pm.
