From planting trees to opening roads and the halls of academia, the Queen came to Birmingham to celebrate that success.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96, after 70 years of reign.

During that time, the Monarch has visited the West Midlands several times, including several trips to Birmingham and Solihull .

Each time the Queen visited the region, she was greeted with excitement, delight, large crowds and great celebrations.

Before she became the Queen, Princess Elizabeth II made a royal visit to Birmingham in 1951.

In the following month, Her Majesty was pictured receiving a bunch of flowers from a youngster in Coronation Gardens in Dudley, during her Jubilee tour.

No doubt this was one of countless bouquets of flowers the Queen received during her Tour of Britain and indeed, her reign.

Queen Elizabeth II visited the new exhibition halls at the NEC in Birmingham accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, who she called 'her constant strength'.

The Queen revisited Birmingham where she met with the Lord Mayor of Birmingham , Cllr. Bill Turner.

The Queen's visits to the West Midlands in the 1980s and 90s

From her cousin's ancestral home to a revamped football stadium, the Queen made several visits to the West Midlands during the 1980s and 1990s.

queen visits to birmingham

Her Majesty kept it in the family when she came to the region in June, 1980, visiting Shugborough Hall in Staffordshire.

The mansion, between Stafford and Rugeley, was the ancestral home of her cousin, the late Patrick, Lord Lichfield, and she was taken on a tour of the palatial building, where she presented a new guidon – pennant – to the Queen's Own Mercian Yeomanry.

She also called in at Saxon Hall School in Lichfield.

She returned to Lichfield in 1988, when she marked Maundy Thursday on March 31 by distributing the traditional Maundy money at Lichfield Cathedral.

She arrived by train at Lichfield City station, where scouts and guides from across the county formed a guard of honour.

She was driven to the Civic Hall where, after being greeted by district council chairman Councillor Charles McEwan and his wife, she went on a walkabout, She joked that she didn't think there could be many daffodils left in Lichfield after being presented with so many by well-wishers.

On reaching the Cathedral, the Duke of Edinburgh helped eight-year-old Emma Court, from Whittington, over a barrier so she could present the Queen with flowers.

Nine-year-old Claire Lorden, of Jeremy Road, Wolverhampton, and her five-year-old brother Peter, also presented her with flowers.

Inside the cathedral, she handed out the Maundy money to 124 elderly people – 62 men and 62 women – from across Staffordshire, Shropshire and the West Midlands.

Tipton, Dudley Zoo, Molineux and Dunstall Park were all on the royal agenda on June 24, 1994.

But the visit also prompted a security alert after a suspect package was found outside the MEB base in Tipton on the day of her visit.

Police cleared back the crowds on the corner of Brick Kiln Street as an explosives expert was called to the scene. The package turned out to be a child’s school bag full of books and sandwiches.

The Queen arrived by train at the newly refurbished Tipton station, before being driven to Dudley Zoo where she opened a new visitor centre at the castle – making her the first monarch to visit the 11th-century fortress since her namesake Elizabeth I in 1575.

Her Majesty was given a tour of the centre before unveiling a piece of commemorative glass and receiving a crystal key to the castle as a gift from the borough.

Schoolchildren then performed a concert in the courtyard in her honour.

She later unveiled a plaque at Walsall probation centre – where the handle dropped off the curtain – before attending a special service in at St Peter's Collegiate Church, which was celebrating its millennium.

She then moved on to the nearby Molineux football stadium, where she unveiled a plaque marking the completion of redevelopment work, before wrapping up the day at the official opening of Dunstall Park's new £13.5 million racecourse.

Further afield, she visited Telford in 1981 and 1982, and Redditch in 1983.

U.S. travel alert: Cruise line cancels more visits to popular Caribbean destination

Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has canceled more stops at one of its most popular destinations due to safety concerns.

RoyalCaribbeanblog.com, a website that tracks the line, reported guests booked in the summer and early fall are receiving notification their visits to Labadee, Haiti have been canceled. Labadee is a private resort operated by Royal Caribbean.

The line had previously canceled visits to Labadee through the end of May. The stop was replaced with visits to other destinations or a day at sea.

The cancellations affect several Royal Caribbean ships, including Adventure of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Liberty of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, and Symphony of the Seas, the website reported.

Royal Caribbean announced in March it was suspending calls to the resort on the northern coast of Haiti after the U.S. State Department issued an alert advising people not to visit the country. Haiti is at a Level Four travel advisory, alongside countries such as Russia, Syria and Burkina Faso, due to issues with “kidnapping, crime, civil unrest and poor healthcare infrastructure,” U.S. officials said.

Haiti is located on the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic sharing the island to the east. The Dominican Republic is under a level 2 advisory with visitors urged to exercise increased caution.

King Charles to Return to Public Duties as Palace Shares Major Update on His Health amid Cancer Treatment

The King, 75, will visit a cancer treatment center with Queen Camilla as the palace says he is "greatly encouraged to be resuming some public-facing duties"

Stephanie Petit is a Royals Editor, Writer and Reporter at PEOPLE.

queen visits to birmingham

King Charles is gearing up for a return to public-facing royal duties after revealing his cancer diagnosis in February.

Buckingham Palace shared an encouraging update about the monarch's health on April 26, announcing that King Charles, 75, will visit a cancer treatment center to meet medical specialists and patients with Queen Camilla , 76, on April 30. It's understood that the center has not been directly involved with the King's medical care.

The palace added that the outing will be the first of several engagements planned for the King in the coming weeks, including hosting a state visit at Buckingham Palace for the Emperor and Empress of Japan in late June.

After beginning cancer treatment, King Charles postponed public duties but continued to work behind the scenes and undertake meetings including small audiences at Buckingham Palace . However, a royal source previously told PEOPLE that the monarch's desire to work was "wholly undiminished" with his nephew Peter Phillips revealing in an interview that his uncle was "frustrated" by his limitations .

Buckingham Palace/PA Wire

“He is always pushing, his staff and everybody and his doctors and nurses to be able to say, 'Actually, can I do this? Can I do that?' " Peter said. “So the overriding message would be that he's obviously very keen to get back to a form of normality. And he's probably frustrated that, recovery is taking a little longer than probably he would want it to."

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said that King Charles' cancer treatment will continue, but "doctors are sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far that The King is now able to resume a number of public-facing duties."

The King will continue all official state business and select audiences in addition to adding public outings to his agenda, but he will not have a full summer schedule, according to the palace. His appearance at Trooping the Colour , the annual celebration and parade marking the British monarch's birthday in London, on June 15 is still unconfirmed, in addition to other highlights on the royal calendar such as Royal Ascot in June and palace garden parties in May.

"Any public-facing engagements will be announced nearer the time in the usual way and will remain subject to doctors’ advice," the palace spokesperson said.

"His Majesty is greatly encouraged to be resuming some public-facing duties and very grateful to his medical team for their continued care and expertise," the spokesperson added.

Hollie Adams - WPA Pool/Getty

The latest health announcement was accompanied by a new portrait of King Charles and Queen Camilla, taken to mark the first anniversary of the coronation approaching on May 6. The snap was taken in the gardens of Buckingham Palace on the morning of April 10, the day after the couple's 19th wedding anniversary , by portrait photographer Millie Pilkington.

Pilkington also got behind the camera last year to snap the official birthday pictures of Kate Middleton and Prince William 's three children, Prince George ,  Princess Charlotte  and  Prince Louis . She also snapped the image of the Prince of Wales surrounded by his sons and daughter that was released last year to celebrate Father's Day.

King Charles was most recently seen spending time with Queen Camilla in Scotland. On April 21, what would have been  Queen Elizabeth 's 98th birthday, the couple were photographed in a car after attending church at Crathie Kirk near Balmoral Castle, where the royal family traditionally gathers in the summer months.

The sovereign  made his first major public appearance since his cancer revelation at Easter. After attending a church service at St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle with Queen Camilla and other members of the royal family, he greeted well-wishers outside by shaking hands and wishing them a happy holiday.

A royal source told PEOPLE last month that King Charles was " progressing well " in his cancer treatment and there is an "amplified confidence" amid the sophisticated treatment receiving.

"He is positive, the doctors are optimistic," the source said.

King Charles Will Return to Royal Duties With a Visit to a Cancer Center

Nearly three months after announcing a cancer diagnosis , King Charles III is getting ready to return to royal duties. On Friday, Buckingham Palace announced that he would return to public engagements next week, and his first event will be a trip to a medical clinic focused on cancer with Queen Camilla.

“His Majesty The King will shortly return to public-facing duties after a period of treatment and recuperation following his recent cancer diagnosis,” the palace statement read. “To help mark this milestone, The King and Queen will make a joint visit to a cancer treatment center next Tuesday, where they will meet medical specialists and patients. This visit will be the first in a number of external engagements His Majesty will undertake in the weeks ahead.” These engagements will include a state visit by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan, set to take place in June.

The announcement came alongside the release of a new official portrait of the couple on their 19th wedding anniversary on April 10. Taken by Millie Pilkington, it shows the king and queen walking in the gardens at Buckingham Palace. The palace statement also mentioned the upcoming anniversary of King Charles’s 2023 coronation and thanked the public for their support since the big event. “As the first anniversary of The Coronation approaches, Their Majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year,” it read.

The king said that he would be taking a break from public duties when he announced his diagnosis with an unspecified form of cancer on February 5. The cancer was discovered during a workup for a procedure to treat benign prostate cancer at the London Clinic, though Vanity Fair confirmed at the time that the king was not suffering from prostate cancer. Though the king did not conduct any public engagement while he was undergoing outpatient treatment, he did continue to receive his daily red box delivery of government papers and also hosted small meetings at Buckingham Palace.

Earlier this week, V.F. reported that king had planned to resume public duties as soon as next month and that his treatment was going well “At the moment HRH is doing very well and responding very well to treatment,” the source said. “He is very keen to get back to public-facing duties before June if he can. He is doing well but is frustrated more than anything else that he has had to take time off. He is being a good patient but not always a patient one.”

13 Undersung TV Gems to Binge Right This Second

After a drag queen show during prom, an Albuquerque high school principal is removed

The principal of a high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has been replaced and multiple employees have been put on administrative leave as the district investigates a drag queen show that took place during prom.

Earlier this week, the chief of Albuquerque Public Schools, Channell Segura, sent a letter to parents confirming the performance occurred during April 20's prom and said an investigation would determine how it happened and how it may have affected students.

Segura was unavailable for comment Friday. She did not say in the letter whether the replacement of Atrisco Heritage Academy High School's principal was related to the drag performance.

In a video on TikTok, students can be seen gathering around the performer in thigh-high black boots and a matching body suit, as the performer is bending over, squatting and dancing provocatively.

Atrisco Heritage Academy High School.

NBC News affiliate KOB 4 in Albuquerque identified the performer as drag queen Mythica Sahreen.

Sahreen told the station that he previously worked with the Gay-Straight Alliance and was invited to perform at the prom. He did not say who invited him.

On the school’s official Facebook page , several people expressed disappointment and frustration over the performance.

“Every staff member who knew anything about that disgusting spectacle at prom should be fired," wrote a poster named Kristin Arnold Waide. "Immediately.”

Another poster, identified as Paul Miller, wrote, "How wicked and morally corrupt must people be to allow this? Whoever approved this should not be allowed anywhere near children.”

A poster named Robb Vann said the performance resembled grooming and predatory behavior.

“What do y’all teach the students there? Did not one person on staff stand up and say anything?" Vann wrote.

It was unclear whether the posters were parents of students at the school.

School district spokesperson Martin Salazar declined to say Friday whether the performance was approved by school officials or how many staff members were placed on leave.

“At this point, I do not have any other information to share,” he said.

The district this week named Anthony Lovato acting principal, he said. Former principal Irene Cisneros could not be reached for comment.
