The Perfect Mediterranean Coast Itinerary

 Cultura RM Exclusive/Anthony Charles/Getty Images

From tasting the paella in Valencia to walking the Cinque Terre, this route takes you to the best places along the European Mediterranean coast. The trip can easily be done by car or train—each of the cities and villages included have central train stations. Allow 2-3 weeks to make the most of each destination— consider a rail pass if you're going to travel the entire route!

Valencia, Spain

Start in Valencia, Spain's third-largest city. Explore the city's compact historic center and two central squares. Mingle with locals at the Mercado Central and eat plenty of paella—this is where the famous rice dish originates. Don't miss a walk through the historic La Lonja silk exchange building, and if you time things right, throw tomatoes at your friends during the annual  La Tomatina  festival.

Tarragona, Spain

Next, make a pit stop in the town of Tarragona, which was founded as an important Roman Military camp in 218 bc. Explore Roman ruins  like the Amfiteatre Romà, eat seafood and tapas near the marina and hit the beach at one of the city's surrounding coves.

TripSavvy / Jamie Ditaranto

Allow for at least three days in Barcelona , everybody's favorite port city on the Mediterranean. Get lost exploring the narrow, art-filled streets of the Barrio Gotico, dare yourself to track down every one of Antoni Gaudí's unique designs (including the eternally-under-construction Sagrada Familia ), snap photos of fruit and fish at the colorful Boquería market and start a staring contest with a human statue on La Rambla.

Narbonne and Carcassonne, France

Spend a day or two exploring Narbonne and Carcassonne. Narbonne was the first Roman colony outside of Italy and was located at the crossroads of the Via Domitia, the Roman road linking Italy to Spain. In Carcassonne, visit (or simply stare at) the best preserved Cathar castle in France.

Nimes, France

TripSavvy / Ivey Redding

Like the nearby towns of Arles and Avignon, Nimes is a historic center that shares space with remarkable Roman ruins. Nimes is more Spanish than Arles; you'll find bullfighting and plenty of tapas here. Outside of town, take the opportunity to taste Mulsum, an ancient Roman wine that's still being made today.

Avignon, France

The papacy's former home town is a must-see part of Provence. The towering 1300s palace (the largest gothic palace in Europe) is still open to visitors today, and the city's narrow streets and pedestrian plazas offer plenty to explore. Avignon is also a launch pad for day trips to other Provence towns, so plan for at least three days there.

Arles, France

Founded by the Greeks, colonized by the Romans, made famous again by Van Gogh— Arles is the essence of Provence , complete with a great Roman arena right in the center. That arena is now host to bullfights and other festivals, and the town has settled into its reputation as a destination for artists, filmmakers, and photographers.

Marseille is best known as a bustling port town and France's second largest city. The town's charm is in its laid-back, urban lifestyle  rather than traditional tourist attractions, and it's become a desirable destination on the alternative travel scene. The city has historically served as a hub for African immigrants entering France, thus boasts strong North African influences and a fascinating fusion of cultures. Bouillabaisse—the famous French seafood stew dish—originated here, so come with plenty of room for snacking.

Nice is the urban capital of the flashy Cote d'Azur. It's a beach destination , a market mingler's paradise, and an eater's daydream. Drive through the seaside cities of Saint Tropes and Cannes to get there, and once you've arrived, meander along the Promenade des Anglais, browse vegetables and fruits at the Cours Saleya Market and admire the works of Matisse in the town that provided the painter with years of inspiration

Genoa, Italy

The old port city of Genoa got a facelift when it became the 2004 European Culture Capital—its large Medieval quarter offers plenty churches, palaces, and museums to occupy a couple of days. The city's Rennaissance and Baroque-style Rolli Palaces were granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2006, and the Genoa's rejuvenated port hosts Europe's second largest aquarium.

Cinque Terre, Italy

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Tourists flock to this group of five seaside towns for good reason. Linked by hiking trails (and a frequent train) that ascend up the surrounding cliffs through lemon groves and vineyards, each colorful center brings its own identity to the region. Spend a couple of days traversing each of the paths on the water's edge while stopping for pesto pizza, limoncello, and refreshing rock-pool swims along the way.

Old and new mix in interesting ways in Italy's capital city. Spend three to four days exploring the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and the Forum. Toss a penny in the Trevi Fountain for good luck, and enjoy a gelato in one of the city's market squares. Head to the Trastevere neighborhood for an iconic Italian meal, and gawk upwards at Michelangelo's frescos in the Vatican's Sistine Chapel.

18 Day Mediterranean Coast Road Trip Itinerary

mediterranean travel itinerary

3 adults, 2 kids, 2 walkie-talkies , and 2 cars. Our Mediterranean coast road trip lasted 18 days across 4 countries: Italy, France, Monaco, and Spain. If you’ve ever thought about taking a road trip around the Mediterranean coast of Europe, here’s the ultimate itinerary to get you started.

When my parents asked whether I’d consider driving the Mediterranean coast with them. It was not a difficult decision. The kids and I flew to Italy, cruised the eastern Mediterranean with them, and then decided to drive the western Mediterranean in one epic 18 day Mediterranean Coast road trip itinerary.

Can you drive around the Mediterranean?

The Mediterranean Sea region is surrounded by 21 countries, which together share a coastline of 46,000 km. They are Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia , Cyprus, Egypt, France , Greece , Israel , Italy , Lebanon, Libya, Malta , Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, Slovenia, Spain , Syria, Tunisia, and Turkey . And you can drive around, through, and between them all.

What is the Mediterranean coast road called?

No one road takes you from coast to coast as you pass through multiple countries, but here is a rough map of our Mediterranean Coast Road Trip itinerary.

Mediterranean Coast Road Trip - map of 18 day journey

What is the best way to see the Mediterranean?

Having cruised the Mediterranean and road-tripped, both offer pros and cons. But for freedom to stop, change the itinerary, stay longer, leave sooner than nothing beats a road trip Mediterranean coast.

How long does it take to travel across the Mediterranean?

Well, that’s an open-ended question depending on how many of the 21 countries you’d like to visit along the Mediterranean sea. We traveled from the Amalfi Coast in Southern Italy through the French Riviera and Monaco, ending in Spain at a leisurely 18 days.

Mediterranean Coast Road Trip - Citroen in Europe

Our perfect 18 Day Mediterranean coast road trip itinerary

Note: Tolls & fuel have been converted from EUR to AUD.

Day 1 – Italy: Rome to Praiano

Tolls: $22.90 | fuel: $73, accommodation: hotel margherita, praiano ( check prices ).

Picked up my car lease from Citroen and had a beautiful drive to coastal town, Praiano. Check here for prices on how to get to Praiano from Rome.

We found an insanely scenic place to stay, high up on the hill, and settled in for a few days. We finished this evening with a stunning view at dinner overlooking the sandy beach at a cliff-side restaurant that sported a small kid’s playground, and the glorious sound of Church bells.

Mediterranean coast road trip - Positano

Day 2 – Italy: Praiano

Accommodation: hotel margherita, praiano ( check prices).

We didn’t use the car today as we decided to miss the infamous curves of the Amalfi coast and take the bus to Positano . As predicted it was quite the hairy adventure.

After our magnificent day in Positano, we got some laundry done next door for €15 and spent the afternoon swimming in the hotel pool.

Mediterranean coast road trip - positano

Day 3 – Italy: Praiano

Accommodation: tramonto d’oro, praiano ( check price here ).

We were going to attempt a drive to Amalfi today but ended up taking the bus again for our day trip. Our plans to visit Capri were spoiled by bad sea weather. It’s a must if you haven’t been before. The evening ended with a sunset from the rooftop.

Day 4 – Italy: Praiano to Pompeii to Matera

Tolls: $2.80, accommodation: hotel sassi, matera ( check prices in this area ).

We were back on the road today leaving Praiano for Matera. We made a quick stop at the famous Pompeii ruins, an Italian UNESCO World Heritage Site, but didn’t feel like it lived up to its reputation.

Mediterranean coast road trip - pompeii

Our arrival in Matera was a huge surprise. This city is stunning and used in many ancient movies, including Mel Gibson’s famous one.

Mediterranean coast road trip - Matera

Day 5 – Italy: Matera to Termoli

Tolls: $17 | fuel: $86, accommodation: hotel mistral, termoli ( check prices ).

My dad captured the most beautiful photos on a sunrise photography tour around Matera before we ate some breakfast and headed down the coast to the ancient city of Alberobello. This little town is so mysterious and a must-see in Italy. The little houses look like something out of a fairytale for gnomes.

From Alberobello, we visited the Molfetta Outlet before heading to Termoli. We arrived late and simply bought ham and bread for sandwiches that night before hitting the sack.

Mediterranean Coast Road Trip - Alberello

Day 6 – Italy: Termoli to Perugia

Tolls: $21| fuel: $121, accommodation: albergo nyers, perugia ( check prices ).

The breakfast at our hotel was worth a mention! We didn’t stick around in Termoli, opting to head straight to Perugia instead. The kids and I were supposed to meet my mum and dad for lunch, but we headed straight to Perugia as we couldn’t find them.

Perugia was just as surprising as Matera, a beautiful part of Italy that should be visited. We enjoyed a walk around the city and dinner in town.

Mediterranean Coast Road Trip - Perugia

Day 7 – Italy: Perugia to Florence

Accommodation: villa san michele, fiesole firenze ( check the price here ).

Funny story today as our GPS directed us down some dangerously narrow roads to the wrong location. Felt truly Italian. When we arrived at our hotel I was gobsmacked, it was incredible, and I didn’t want to leave. Thank God we had booked 2 nights.

Leaving the car at the Villa we decided to take a taxi to Florence and enjoyed an evening walk around town visiting the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, and letting the kids ride the carousel. We returned to Villa San Michele for dinner and enjoyed one of the best meals I ate in Italy.

Mediterranean Coast Road Trip - Villa San Michele

Day 8 – Italy: Florence

Accommodation: villa san michele, fiesole firenze ( check price ).

Following another incredible breakfast, the kids and I went for a swim in the pool. After our swim, the kids wanted to stay at the kids club so I enjoyed a leisurely lunch by the pool, caught up on some writing, and even booked some flights.

Once the kids returned I organized a babysitter and headed back to Florence via the hotel shuttle for an evening with my parents. My Dad attempted a 1kg steak before we walked around Florence with our Italian gelato.

mediterranean travel itinerary

Day 9 – Italy: Florence to Pisa to Monaco to Nice, France

Accommodation: little palace, nice ( check prices ).

A sad farewell to Villa San Michele, but I wanted to start early because I could not leave Italy without letting the kids see popular Italian icon , Leaning Tower of Pisa. I found a great parking spot, took a few happy snaps and we were back in our car on the way to Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Mediterranean Coast Road Trip - PIsa

We stopped in Monaco very briefly for a quick look at the super impressive cars and gold star hotels before continuing onto Nice in Southern France.

Phew! 3 countries in one day.

In Nice, we had a walk along a beautiful beach in the French Rivera, stopped for a terrible dinner with arrogant waiters, and checked into our tiny out-of-the-way hotel. Not a great start for the French part of our journey.

Mediterranean Coast Road Trip - Nice France

Day 10 – France: Nice to Arles

Tolls: $30.20 | fuel: $91, accommodation: airbnb apartment, arles ( check prices in this area ).

Our crepes for breakfast were better. And we checked out of Nice and headed to Cannes. Took some photos by the beach and then drove to Aix.

We had a delightful time walking around Aix, before driving onto Arles. We had an ultra-cute French-loft Airbnb apartment for the evening so we cooked our meal and had a night in.

Mediterranean Coast Road Trip - france

Day 11 – France: Arles

After meeting up with my parents we took a walk around the old city , visiting the amphitheater, taking another ride on another carousel, and made it back home for an afternoon nap.

Mediterranean Coast Road Trip - carasoul

Day 12 – France: Arles to Creissels

Tolls: $7.80, accommodation: hericlea hotel sport, millau ( check price ).

Today we drove to Saint-Guithem-le-Desert. An adorable medieval-style town, easy to walk around and enjoy. Decided to have dessert for lunch and it didn’t disappoint with mouth-water crème Brulee and profiteroles. I have to admit at least the French know how to do dessert.

mediterranean travel itinerary

Back on the road we made it to Millau and checked into our log cabin, while my parents chose a castle.

Mediterranean Coast Road Trip - log cabin

Day 13 – France: Creissels to Toulouse

Tolls: $2 | fuel: $105, accommodation: airbnb apartment, toulouse ( check prices in the area ).

Today we decided on an impromptu visit to the French countryside to see a French cave, Aven Armand . I’m so glad we did. The countryside was gorgeous and the caves were fascinating.

Mediterranean Coast Road Trip - cave

After the caves, we headed to Toulouse, checked into our apartment, and bought some kebabs for delivery as the kids were already fast asleep.

Day 14 – France: Toulouse

We took a walk around Toulouse today, found a playground, and rode yet another carousel. Had an afternoon nap before heading for dinner at the Hippopotamus, which was pretty good.

Mediterranean Coast Road Trip - toulouse

Day 15 – Spain: Toulouse to Pamplona, Spain

Tolls: $39.30 | impound: $140, accommodation: hotel avenida, pamplona ( check price ).

An early start this morning didn’t happen. As the kids and I walked out of our apartment towards the car, there was no car. Instead, there was a market. The French police stole my car. Finally, after several hours we were back on the road and made a mad dash out of France to our Spain road trip. After a quick highway road stop for lunch. We made it to our hotel in Northern Spain late afternoon.

Mediterranean Coast Road Trip - markets

Never to miss any opportunity to see an old town we decided to take a walk around Pamplona and stumbled, by chance, upon a family “running of the bulls”. What fun! And such a relief to just have fun after our stressful morning in France.

mediterranean travel itinerary

Day 16 – Spain: Pamplona to Barcelona

Accommodation: mercer hotel, barcelona ( check price ).

Zaragoza was on our list of stops today and we had a fun lunch at Tommy Mel’s Diner before continuing our trip to Barcelona . Having decided not to visit Southern Spain, we all decided Barcelona was not made for cars and hit up Citroen to return our car. It happened to be the same depot as my parent’s Renault so we all squished in a taxi back to our hotel. The taxi driver actually had no idea what he was doing and dropped us some distance. I was bummed we weren’t going ot make it to Costa Brava, but after walking miles to our hotel, I was more then happy. The Mercer Hotel was incredible.

mediterranean travel itinerary

Day 17 – Spain: Barcelona

As part of our Spain itinerary today we explored Barcelona. We walked the main drag and took the bus to Guell Park . Later that evening we walked to the harbor and stopped for some Spanish food. Dinner at El Ray De La Gamba was a disappointment.

mediterranean travel itinerary

Day 18 – Ireland: Barcelona flight to Ireland

Accommodation: ballsbridge hotel, dublin ( check price ).

It was a sad start as our Spanish road trip came to an end. My my parents came to our hotel to say goodbye and I was emotional mess, but determined that the travel must go on. The kids and I grabbed a taxi to the airport and took a flight to Dublin, Ireland. We settled in at the Ballsbridge hotel for the next 6 nights for TBEX.

What is the Mediterranean coast road trip final tally?

And there you have all my travel tips for an 18-day Mediterranean coast road trip through Italy, Monaco, France, and Spain.

Italy by far was my favorite, followed by Spain. Unfortunately, this being my third trip to France, I’m still not a fan, jaded as it was by the missing car incident, rude restaurant staff, and disappointing food choices. I also blame my English blood.

In all seriousness, seeing the Mediterranean Coast by road is a great way to go. There are so many little towns that are the epitome of history and have such a unique flavor. I wish we could see them all. Maybe next time.

2. Barcelona, Spain

3. Montpellier, France

Montpellier in Southern France is just 6 miles from the Mediterranean. The city is known for its remarkable architecture, including the Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Pierre dating back to the 1300s. It’s a beautiful, stately, and laid-back French coastal city.

4. Marseille, France

Even though it's considered the black sheep of France’s Mediterranean, especially when compared to Cannes or Nice, Marseille's gritty charm is worth exploring. Its 1500-year-old history as a fishing and trade hub is a fascinating foundation for Marseille’s resurgence.

There are hourly trains between Montpellier and Marseille with several rail companies. The journey takes 1h 30m to 2h 30m, depending on the route. It is possible to get to Marseille directly from Madrid and Barcelona using the AVE high speed train.

A post shared by Instagram Marseille Officiel (@igersmarseille) on Jun 7, 2017 at 12:19am PDT

View this post on Instagram A post shared by MONACO | #ThisIsMonaco 🇲🇨 (@thisismonaco)

8. Savona, Italy

On first appearance, Savona is a traditional Italian port city, but you'll find many layers when you wander through its medieval center. Bars, restaurants, and stores help make this a vibrant stop on your Mediterranean itinerary.

Trenitalia operates regular direct trains between Monaco and Savona. The trip takes between 2 and 3 hours.

A post shared by Viaggiare attorno al Mondo (@viaggiareattornoalmondo) on Jul 20, 2017 at 10:31pm PDT

9. Genoa, Italy

Genoa played an important role in maritime trade, and this shows through in various ways. The medieval old town, with winding alleyways and several notable museums, is a pretty intriguing place to explore.

There are hourly trains between Savona and Genoa that take approximately 1 hour.

  A post shared by @genovamorethanthis on Jul 13, 2017 at 2:51am PDT

10. Pisa, Italy

The city’s famous leaning tower is a tourist favorite, but there’s a lot more to Pisa than its faulty architecture. Pisa’s iconic university, founded in the 12th century, gives this popular Italian destination a youthful vibe.

Pisa is 1h 40m away from Genoa by rail, and there are trains approximately every three hours.

A post shared by Instagramers Pisa (@igerspisa) on Jul 13, 2017 at 9:55pm PDT

11. Livorno, Italy

This port city on Tuscany’s west coast is known for its seafood and fortifications dating back to the Renaissance era. Livorno’s waterside promenade also provides beautiful views of the Mediterranean Ocean.

Livorno is just 15 minutes away by train. There are frequent Trenitalia and InterCity trains.

A post shared by Igers Livorno (@igerslivorno) on Jul 22, 2017 at 1:24am PDT

12. Rome, Italy

The Italian capital is a sprawling mass of captivating history. Historical and architectural marvels hide around every corner, and it’s an easy hub from which to start or end any Mediterranean rail trip.

There are trains approximately every four hours to Rome. The journey takes approximately 2h 40m, depending on route taken.

Valencia is the third-largest city in Spain and home to some of the Mediterranean’s most pristine beaches. There's a 2-mile palm tree-lined promenade along the beachfront, which is perfect for long walks. The vibrant urban centre is known for its classic and modern architecture.

How to get there

There are regular trains to Valencia from the capital Madrid. The journey takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Barcelona is famous for its art and architecture, and it’s an unmissable hub on any Mediterranean itinerary. Tour Gaudí’s famous buildings, walk the winding roads of the Gothic Quarter, party the night away at hundreds of bars and clubs, or soak up some sun on Barceloneta Beach.

There are trains along the coast from Valencia to Barcelona at least every two hours. The journey takes about 3 hours.

Montpellier in Southern France is just 6 miles from the Mediterranean. The city is known for its remarkable architecture, including the Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Pierre dating back to the 1300s. It’s a beautiful, stately, and laid-back French coastal city.

There are direct, daily trains to Montpellier with both the TGV and the AVE high speed trains. The journey takes approximately 3 hours.

This glitzy town on the French Riviera is famous for its annual film festival. The lavish yachts, sandy beaches and glistening blue waters make it an intriguing destination to visit at other times of the year as well.

The train to Cannes takes approximately 2 hours from Marseilles. There are regular connections with both TGV and SNCF.

On France’s southeast coast, Nice offers visitors popular restaurants, beautiful buildings, a vibrant nightlife, and, of course, an impressively wide beach on the Med.

Nice is a short 30-minute train ride away from Cannes, and there are trains every few minutes.

This small city-state on France’s Mediterranean coast is famous for its flagrant display of wealth. Yachts, casinos, stunning architecture, and its famed Grand Prix race make this a popular destination to visit throughout the year.

The journey to Monte Carlo in Monaco takes 20 minutes from Nice, and there’s a train every half hour.

On first appearances Savona is a traditional Italian port city, but you'll find many layers when you wander through its medieval centre. Bars, restaurants, and stores help make this a vibrant stop on your Mediterranean itinerary.

Regular regional trains operate between Monaco and Savona with a connection in Ventimiglia. The trip takes between 2  to 3 hours.

Genoa played an important role in maritime trade, and this shows through in various ways. The medieval old town, with winding alleyways and several notable museums, is a pretty intriguing place to explore.

There are hourly trains between Savona and Genoa that take approximately 1 hour.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Genova, Italy (@genovamorethanthis)

The city’s famous leaning tower is a tourist favourite, but there’s a lot more to Pisa than its faulty architecture. Pisa’s iconic university, founded in the 12th century, gives this popular Italian destination a youthful vibe.

Pisa is 1 hour 40 minutes away from Genoa by rail, and there are trains approximately every three hours.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Instagramers Pisa (@igerspisa)

This port city on Tuscany’s west coast is known for its seafood and fortifications dating back to the Renaissance era. Livorno’s waterside promenade also provides beautiful views of the Mediterranean Ocean.

Livorno is just 15 minutes away by train. There are frequent Trenitalia and InterCity trains.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Igers®️ Livorno (@igerslivorno)

The Italian capital is a sprawling mass of captivating history. Historical and architectural marvels hide around every corner, and it’s an easy hub from which to start or end any Mediterranean rail trip.

There are trains approximately every four hours to Rome. The journey takes approximately 2 hours 40 minutes, depending on the route taken.

Day 2: tabarca island, day 3: serra gelada & altea, day 4: el castell de guadalest & calpe, spain mediterranean coast road trip itinerary.

The Mediterranean’s reach is expansive — you can enjoy coastal visits from destinations like Barcelona in the north and Malaga in the south (and of course from France and Italy too).

But one of the Mediterranean’s grandest stretches is along Spain’s western coast from Alicante to Valencia . Frequented by locals and tourists alike, you’ll find some of the country’s most beautiful beaches, gorgeous national parks, sprawling vineyards and quaint villages with this 7-day Spanish Mediterranean coastal road trip itinerary.

RECOMMENDED: The Best Things to Do in Seville Spain This Year

You can fly nonstop to Madrid , Spain from many major US hubs on airlines like American, Delta, United and Iberia. Great flight deals into Madrid  can be found here.

From there, it’s a short hop via train, bus or plane to Alicante . If you have a little extra time on your hands, rent a car in Madrid and drive to Alicante (about four hours). Either way, once there, you’ll need a car to maximize this itinerary. Spain has plenty of car rental options; expect familiar brands like Avis, Budget or Hertz among others. Just keep an eye out for speed cameras and read up on the rules for round-a-bouts.

This itinerary can be done year-round but is best during the shoulder seasons like May or October . Keep in mind that winters are cold and some spots may shut down seasonally. Summer brings crowds and heat but may be ideal if you’re looking to enjoy some serious beach time.

From luxury hotels to budget hostels to comfortable home rentals and everything in between, you’ll easily find accommodation along the coast that suit your taste and budget. Just plan to book in advance if traveling during high/shoulder seasons or during holidays such as Easter week.

Spain uses the Euro, so make sure to have some of the currency on hand. While most locals speak a bit of English, brushing up on your Spanish isn’t a bad idea.

Alicante: 2 Days

(Click Here for Hotel Recommendations in Alicante)

Day 1: Tour Alicante

7 Day Spain Itinerary Starting in Alicante

You can see the highlights of Alicante’s historic city center in a day. Start with a trek up to the hilltop Santa Barbara Castle — its roots date back to the 9th century. The fortress offers stunning views of the city and azure Mediterranean waves. You can even enjoy a craft beer tasting while at Santa Barbara Castle .

Then, stroll the city’s palm-tree-lined pedestrian street, Esplanada d’Espanya, admiring the port and market stalls selling local goods. Make sure to check out the city hall and the cathedral, and if it’s too hot or rainy, there’s always the MACA art museum. For a sunny break, visit the main city beach, Playa Postiguet, or for an even longer stretch of white sand, drive 15-20 minutes to San Juan or El Campello, some of the most popular destinations for beachcombers within the province. These can be done via Bike or E-Bike ride , helping to make more of your time and get some fun activity in.

Hop a ferry from Alicante’s main port to the nearby island of Tabarca. The ride usually takes between 45 minutes to an hour, and voilà, you’re in island paradise. Tabarca is perfect for a relaxing day enjoying the beach, for water sports like snorkeling, or exploring the island to discover landmarks like the lighthouse. You can book round-trip ferry tickets ahead of time right here.

Altea: 1 Day

(Boutique Hotels in Altea)

Things to do in Altea Spain

Altea is just a 40-minute drive from Alicante, but it feels worlds away. Reminiscent of Andalusia’s white villages , this whitewashed, hilltop hamlet practically drips Spanish charm. Wander the village, snapping photos of all the beautiful buildings and the sea in the distance.

Before you get to Altea though, a visit to the Serra Gelada is a must . Whether it’s a quick stroll or a full-on mountain hike, you’ll get the perfect dose of nature with a stop at this small but gorgeous natural park.

Calpe: 1 Day

(Take a Look at These Beachfront Hotels in Calpe)

It’s time to head to Calpe with a stop at the medieval village of Guadalest. The highlight is the castle, set atop a jagged rock mountain overlooking a reservoir. The white village in the valley below is the perfect spot to wander and stop for an ice cream or coffee.

Calpe is the destination where you’ll want to visit the beach. The sandy stretch of Arena-Bol has all the amenities. The many coves that sit between and around the city and the famous Penon de Ifach rock are pebbly, but gorgeous. Hikers should head to the top of the rock for stunning views of the coast. There are even some stunning waterfalls that are well-worth visiting .

Valencia: 3 Days

(Romantic Hotel Options in Valencia)

Day 1: Wine Tasting & Drive to Valencia

Things to do in Valencia Spain on a 7 day road trip

Head north to Valencia, stopping along the way to visit some wineries. Bodega Xalo has local wine, honey and olive oil, and the Maserof Wine Museum offers activities like candlelight grape stomping and Spanish cooking classes.

Once in Valencia, head to the Albufera Natural Park , where the freshwater lake ( you can explore it via boat ) overlooks the salty Mediterranean Sea. After a long drive, a walk on one of the trails will give you that added energy boost.

Book Tickets for Things to Do in Valencia in Advance

Day 2: valencia’s city of arts and sciences.

Apt for visitors of all ages, the buildings in Valencia’s Art and Science Park are imposing, modern structures. Although the park has a museum and planetarium, the most unique spot is the Oceanogràfic, one of the largest marine parks/aquariums in Europe. Check out all the different options and plan your day ahead of time, buying tickets online for your desired attraction(s) to avoid waiting.

Day 3: La Sierra Calderona

This natural park is just over an hour northwest of Valencia, apt for walkers, hikers or cyclists. With various castles to visit and viewpoints to discover, the options are endless. There are routes and trails for beginning walkers to avid climbers and everything in between. One of the most popular hikes is up to the Garbí Viewpoint . Parts of the route can be grueling on foot, but you can drive to the viewpoint too.

It’s time to return your rental car and head off to the Valencia train station or airport. If you have more time, you can always enjoy a few nights in Barcelona or Madrid to end your trip.

Mediterranean cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Erica Silverstein

No two Mediterranean cruises are the same. Some bring travelers to the French and Italian rivieras for food, wine and cultural pursuits. Others head east to the Greek Islands, where passengers alternate days sipping ouzo at a beachfront taverna with trips to ancient sites. Each itinerary is a mix of urban tourist capitals — Barcelona! Rome! Istanbul! Jerusalem! — and sleeper gems, such as Portofino, Italy, or Kotor, Montenegro.

If you've never been to Europe, you may feel overwhelmed by destination choices. If you know which ports are on your must-see list, you might be more stumped by which cruise line to choose or which specific itinerary will be the best for you.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Know that you can't see everything in one Mediterranean cruise — even on sailings that run multiple weeks. Once you let go of your need to see and do it all and accept that you're on a sampler tour, you'll be better able to make your cruise selections and enjoy the ports your ship does visit.

Get started with this Mediterranean cruise guide. You'll learn the basics of itineraries, cruise lines, destinations, when to go and when to book your European adventure at sea.

Why cruise to the Mediterranean?

mediterranean travel itinerary

Many of the European countries on your travel bucket list lie along the Mediterranean Sea: Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Israel and Egypt. A cruise lets you hit many of the hot spots (the French Riviera, Barcelona and Venice, Italy) on one trip without having to navigate multiple hotels, transportation between cities and making dinner reservations in foreign languages.

For some people those experiences are a key part of travel. However, for vacationers who want all the attractions without the hassle, a cruise is an ideal way to explore the Mediterranean. This type of European cruise can be especially alluring to honeymooners, families and older couples.

Mediterranean cruises beckon travelers with a love of culture and history. Visit the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, or the Colosseum in Rome; see Michelangelo's David in Florence, Italy; or make a pilgrimage to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. Take a tour to a medieval town or marvel at the construction of a soaring cathedral. If you've always wanted to see the pyramids in Giza, Egypt; the ruins in Ephesus, Turkey, and Pompeii, Italy; Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona; and the famous casino in Monaco, you can do it easily on a Mediterranean sailing.

You can also eat your way through the markets, cafes, trattorias, gelato shops and crepe stands in the ports you visit. Sample local wines at vineyards in France and Italy, or sip ouzo or limoncello made on the premises.

When do cruises go to the Mediterranean?

You might be surprised to learn that cruise ships sail the Mediterranean year-round.

The majority of ships, however, arrive in the spring and depart in the fall, choosing warmer climes like the Caribbean for holiday sailings. Only a few hardy stalwarts remain through the winter months. Most of those are European-based lines, such as Costa Cruises , MSC Cruises and Celestyal Cruises , but Viking also braves chilly weather for its destination-focused itineraries in Europe.

Best Mediterranean itineraries

You can find a variety of weeklong Mediterranean cruises, but if you've got the time, nine- to 14-night sailings are not uncommon. Seven-night cruises are best if you're short on time or want to tack on a few days in Barcelona, Rome or Athens before or after your cruise. Longer itineraries are ideal for experiencing a greater variety of destinations and traversing more of the Med.

Here are some the best Mediterranean cruise itineraries you should consider for your European vacation.

Western Mediterranean

The classic Western Mediterranean cruise sails between Barcelona and Rome, and calls in ports in Spain, France, Monaco and Italy. This is your chance to explore Tuscany and the French Riviera, as well as hit up Florence, Monte Carlo, Naples and islands such as Corsica, Mallorca, Sicily and Sardinia. Just watch out: Marquee destinations like Rome and Florence are both located an hour or more from the cruise port, so get ready for long bus rides and long days off the ship.

Greece and Turkey

The classic Eastern Mediterranean cruise sails out of Athens or Istanbul and visits a mix of historic places (Delphi, Ephesus via Kusadasi, Rhodes) and sun-drenched islands (Mykonos and Santorini).

Adriatic Sea

Some so-called Mediterranean cruises actually spend most of their time on the Adriatic Sea, sailing from Venice and visiting ports in Croatia and Greece, and sometimes Montenegro and Albania. You may also find an Adriatic sailing wrapped into longer Western or Eastern Mediterranean cruises.

The most easterly of the Eastern Mediterranean itineraries, Holy Land cruises spend time in Israel and sometimes Egypt, often with overnight stops or multiple days spent in each country to maximize touring opportunities. These sailings may also call in Cyprus or ports in Greece and Turkey.

Best Mediterranean cruise lines

mediterranean travel itinerary

Most major cruise lines send at least one ship to the Mediterranean every year. Even Carnival Cruise Line , known for its affordable cruises out of U.S. home ports, offers some Mediterranean sailings, as does Disney Cruise Line , which typically bases its ships near its theme parks.

If you're looking for a bigger ship, Celebrity Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean are the best choices as they base a handful of ships in the Mediterranean each year, arriving in the spring and departing in the fall. These lines offer a variety of itinerary choices, so you can find the Mediterranean ports you most want to visit. You'll also find lots of restaurant choices and evening entertainment options to keep you occupied at night when the ship is sailing.

Couples or families with grown children looking for longer sailings and a destination focus should consider Viking, which offers eight- to 15-night cruises through the Mediterranean, including three- and four-week voyages for retirees (or workationers?) who have the time for a most thorough exploration of the region.

Which luxury line is best for your Mediterranean cruise will come down to what you're looking for in a luxury ship and a European itinerary. However, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises stand out for including a large variety of shore excursions in their cruise fares. If you're a foodie, these two lines plus Oceania Cruises are notable for their culinary tours in port, plus destination-themed cooking classes on board.

Things to do in the Mediterranean

Sightseeing is a big component of Mediterranean cruises, whether that's exploring a historic site like the Roman Forum or the walled city of Dubrovnik, Croatia; visiting cathedrals in Florence and Barcelona; or touring medieval villages, forts and old towns. You might want to skip the formal tours and merely wander around the port town, browsing local shops or grabbing a coffee or snack in a local cafe.

Culinary tours are also popular here. You can choose from roving food tours, cooking classes, winery visits and tastings, and meals made with local produce and cheeses in beautiful villa or farmhouse settings.

Travelers looking to stretch their legs might want to sign up for cycling tours in city and country settings, hike around a volcano on Santorini or Sicily, or even take a kayak for a spin in Croatia or Greece.

A beach day is possible in the Greek Islands or along the French Riviera, and many ports will have sightseeing cruises.

Best Mediterranean cruise ports

mediterranean travel itinerary

Everyone has their favorite list of the best Mediterranean cruise ports (as evidenced by the discussion I just had with TPG's cruise team about which to include). Some travelers want to hit all the most popular cities, while others prioritize the ability to walk right off the ship into the heart of the town. Some ports are better for historical attractions, others for cafe culture or outdoor activities.

The following cruise ports are generally standouts, no matter your travel style.

Barcelona: Both an embarkation port and a port of call, depending on your itinerary, Barcelona has much to offer first-timers and repeat visitors. Cruise ships dock at the end of Las Ramblas, the main thoroughfare in the old part of the city, so it's easy to leave the ship and simply wander. Don't miss Gaudi's fantastical buildings or a meal of tapas.

Monte Carlo, Monaco: Monte Carlo is both a fascinating port on its own and a gateway to the French Riviera. In town, you can walk to the casino, palace and stunning oceanographic museum. From town, you can take the twisty-turny Corniche coastal roads to destinations like Nice, Eze, Cannes and Grasse.

Dubrovnik, Croatia: Even if you're not in it for the "Game of Thrones" tour, you will be captivated by Dubrovnik and its famous walled city. Walk the walls or take to the water for scenic views of the old town.

Rome: It's actually a pain to get to Rome from the cruise port of Civitavecchia by bus or train, but it's worth it to experience the Eternal City firsthand. Tour the Vatican and Sistine Chapel at St. Peter's Cathedral, step back in time at the Colosseum and Roman Forum, climb the Spanish Steps, throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain and meander through the Borghese Gardens. When your feet give out, take a breather with a gelato or plate of pasta.

Rhodes, Greece: The historic port of Rhodes no longer has a Colossus, but that doesn't take away its appeal. Ensconced by ancient stone walls, Old Town is easily walkable, composed of cobblestone streets lined with restaurants and stores housed in structures dating back to the 14th century. If shopping isn't your thing, keep walking until you reach the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, where you can take a tour, or venture out to one of the city's beaches.

Naples, Italy: Naples is one of our favorite ports because you have so many options of what to do there. It's the jumping-off point for tours to Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, Capri and the Amalfi Coast. Or, if you want to explore the city on your own, perhaps sitting down to a lunch of the region's famous pizza, it's a quick walk right into town from your cruise ship.

Ashdod, Israel : Most cruisers don't stick around Ashdod; it makes our list of best Mediterranean cruise ports because it's the gateway to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Tel Aviv and the Dead Sea. Prepare to be amazed by the sites you will see, but also be ready for long bus rides and long days off the ship touring.

Istanbul: Istanbul is the vibrant city you might not know you need to visit. Serving as both a departure port and port of call on Mediterranean cruises, the city offers something for everything: the cultural icons of the Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque, intense shopping experiences at the Grand Bazaar, Byzantine palaces, traditional Turkish baths (called hammams), flavorful cuisine, Bosporus day cruises between Europe and Asia, and plenty of neighborhoods to explore.

When to book a Mediterranean cruise

It's a good idea to book your Mediterranean cruise early, even nine to 12 months in advance. You can take advantage of early booking discounts and promotions and have the widest selection of available cabins and suites and dining times (if applicable). An early booking is ideal if you're planning on using miles to book your flights or points for a pre-cruise hotel. Look for fall sales when the current Mediterranean season is winding down.

Another smart time to book a Mediterranean cruise is during January or February when cruise lines run their " wave season " sales, often with lots of extra freebies thrown into the cost of the sailing. You might find last-minute deals on spring cruises to Europe or still be considered early for fall itineraries.

What to bring on a Mediterranean cruise

The Mediterranean region has a temperate climate, but it still gets chilly in the spring and fall and can be brutally hot in the summer. Check the weather before your sail date and pack for the predicted temperatures — with layers, in case the forecasters are wrong and it's unseasonably hot or cold.

You'll likely do a good deal of walking on a Mediterranean cruise, so a good pair of walking shoes is a must. Bonus if you can find cute options you can wear on sea days or sneakers that can do double duty in the ship's gym.

If your tours take you to religious sites, especially in Israel and Egypt, you might need a modest outfit that covers shoulders, arms and knees. Ladies, a shawl is a versatile option you can toss over your shoulders (or hair if need be), use for warmth with your strappy formal night attire or as a blanket on the airplane.

Of course, North Americans taking Mediterranean cruise vacations will need a passport to fly to and from their ship's departure and arrival ports.

Bottom line

The Mediterranean is an amazing region to cruise, and a sailing there is a wonderful introduction to Europe for travelers who have never been. The varied choices of itineraries, cruise lines and ships can be intimidating, but rest assured, you can't really go wrong with any of them. Just know that once you go, you may feel a need to return — either to see a port you loved more in-depth on a land vacation or to sail to the Mediterranean countries you missed on your first go-round.

Zagreb to Athens: Adriatic & Ancient Capitals

Excellent tour with fantastic tour guide (Noddy). It's a tour aimed at younger (under 40) travellers, so the accommodation is mainly hostels and the pace is pretty fast but we still managed to spend a reasonable amount of time in each place. There was a good balance of history/culture and activities, and there is a lot of flexibility with the optional activities and free time to spend more or less time at the beach, museums, etc. Highly recommended as an introduction to the Balkans!

We were a small group of 7 people, which was great. Our Tour Guide Alice was amazing, totally amiable, knowledgeable and fun. Everytime we wanted to change the trip activities she accommodated our wishes. I most enjoyed the part of the trip in Montenegro, a beautiful country. The overall trip is a well-balanced combination of experiencing nature, cities, culture and party-opportunities.

He coordinated all of tour times and kept us updated. We had such a large group but he was able to up with us all at all times! I miss this crew. If you are thinking about taking this trip but on the fence I would highly recommend Ivan and this particular sailboat crew with Viktorja!

Enjoyed the whole experience. Several things need improvement. You need to offer Versalles entrance as an option. Everyone wanted to go in. It was sold out and we were told we should have bought our tickets ahead, but no one could tell us when we would be there or for how long, till we got there. Everyone wanted more time in Peniscola. A recommendation to come a day early or stay a day later to catch The Lourve or Prago. Nobody liked the Paris hotel. Bad neighborhood. Overall, a wonderful tour and trip.

My tour guide was knowledgeable, fun and resourceful. She was really good at bringing everyone together, in terms of hanging out and eating together. She was quick in arranging the tasks or the places we were supposed to see and visit that were given to her to get the tour done for that day. She was very friendly and by the end of the tour, I became close to her and to others in the tour because she made sure to involve everyone. It was a pleasant and fun experience overall.

Here is my review: - The trip was too tiring, yet interesting.. too many places in such short time, but we knew it and were not surprised. - No internet on board of buses, which is a bit annoying. _ Guides are ok: punctual, knowledgable, and caring. I would like to thank: Damir Kopljar, our tour guide in Zagreb. Maja, our tour guide in Sarajevo, Mostar and Medjugorja. Dolores, our tour guide in Dubrovnik (very caring person). Ivan, our tour guide from Split. As for the hotels, I classified some to be 3 stars, some 4 stars and some 5 stars, as follows: Hotel Rainers, Vienna 3.5 stars Hotel Antounovic, Zagreb 4 stars Hotel Hills, Sarajevo 5 stars Hotel Lero, Dubrovnik 3 stars Hotel Mondo, Split 3 stars Hotel Bristol, Opatija 4 stars Hotel M, Ljubljana 4 stars Lugano Torretta, Venice 3 stars Thank you and best regards, Sherif Guirguis

Turkey Explored Tour

It was an excellent trip with an excellent guide Two issues foe me were 1 I missed out on a balloon trip over Capadocia. On the first day the weather was deemed too windy and on the second the Intrepid balloon was full . However other totally adequate balloons went up and had spaces to filI. I understand it is not Intrepids policy to encourage it's clients use other companies, and as a result I missed out . 2 The Museum card was not the money saver we had expected it to be For example it could only be used on one turnstile every five days inTopcapi Palace leaving us with extra unexpected costs

We really enjoyed the tour. Some of the meals were great, other meals not so much. Some of the hotels were great, some others also not very good. The hotel in Catania (4 days) did not have functioning airconditioning and the dinners there were actually depressing. We passed on the second-night dinner at the hotel and went elsewhere. Our guide (Placido) was very knowledgeable and helpful. Our driver (Angelo) was also very good and courteous.

Baltic vs. Mediterranean cruises: Which European itinerary should you choose?

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Europe has so much to offer by cruise ship that it can be a challenge to decide where to start. Should you choose a Baltic cruise versus a Mediterranean cruise for your sailing abroad? How do you decide?

A Mediterranean cruise is often the first dip into European waters many travelers take. It’s an easy choice because there are many options, including cruises to France, Spain and Italy on familiar big-ship cruise lines with reasonable prices and relatively easy flights. Mix ancient sightseeing and culinary sampling with a dash of beach time, all while surrounded by stunning blue seas, and you’ve got the essence of a summer cruise in the Med.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Baltic cruises are not about beach time, and most of the historical sights are anything but ancient. What you’ll find instead is incredible architecture, garden tours and deep dives into modern European history, as well as access to everything offered in some of Europe’s most vibrant cities in Germany, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. As with the Mediterranean, the region is rich with foods and beverages to taste. Think Danish pastries, German beer and Swedish meatballs.

Let’s look at what each of these two distinct European cruise choices offers to help you decide which one you’d like more.

Mediterranean vs. Baltic on the map

The Mediterranean Sea lies south of Europe, and though it’s connected to the Atlantic Ocean, it is almost entirely enclosed by the European, African and Asian continents. It comprises 11 smaller seas, which can confuse things when you shop for cruises; itineraries are sometimes labeled according to the smaller sea. In general, though, any ocean cruise with ports in Spain, France, Italy, Monaco, Greece or Turkey are Mediterranean cruises.

Eight northern European Union countries and Russia surround the Baltic Sea. It connects to the Atlantic via the North Sea at Denmark. Baltic cruises, particularly the longest itineraries, may begin or end outside the Baltic Sea itself, adding bonus countries to the itinerary. Countries most Baltic cruises visit include Denmark, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, plus Sweden and Finland. Longer cruises might also include Norway and United Kingdom countries outside the Baltic Sea.

Cruise itineraries

Mediterranean cruise itineraries generally are seven nights or longer. Peak season is summer, but it’s possible to find Mediterranean cruises during every month of the year. Summer daytime temperatures average around 80 degrees Fahrenheit but can spike well into the 90s in July and August in some locations. Spring and fall cruises in the Med have more moderate weather.

You’ll find a wide range of choices of departure ports and countries your ship will visit. The most flexible departure ports in terms of what direction the cruise will take you are Barcelona, Rome (Civitavecchia) and Athens (Piraeus) — all of which serve as departure or return ports for cruises in all directions across the Mediterranean.

Depart from Venice (Ravenna or Trieste) to sail to destinations along the Adriatic; in addition to Italy, your itinerary may include Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Greece.

Because there are so many ports in the Mediterranean, sea days are generally limited to one per weeklong sailing, and many itineraries lack sea days entirely.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruises for every type of traveler

One-way itineraries that depart from one port and end in another are common in the Mediterranean, allowing your cruise to visit more ports in more countries than you might on a round-trip route. This can, however, complicate flight plans and may make flights more expensive than round-trip fares — something to pay attention to as you shop for your cruise.

The bonus of these one-way routes is that they are easily combined into longer cruises. A cruise that starts in Barcelona and ends in Athens can be combined with a second cruise from Athens to Istanbul or back to Barcelona. Some lines — such as Viking , Holland America , Princess , Windstar and Oceania — pre-package multiple one-way cruises to make the planning easy. On other lines, like Azamara , Royal Caribbean and Norwegian , you can book two (or more) cruises back-to-back to create your own extended voyage.

Lines that primarily offer round-trip cruises in the Mediterranean include Virgin Voyages , Celebrity and Carnival . Disney Cruise Line also offers round-trip itineraries, including some of the shortest cruises in the Med, with four- and five-night sailings during the line’s brief season there each summer.

Cruisers who count continents can check off three big ones with a carefully planned extended cruise in the region. One way to add Asia to your list is to spend time in Istanbul on both sides of the Bosphorus River, as it’s the dividing line between the continents. Alternatively, the Turkish ports of Kusadasi, Bodrum and Izmir are among those commonly visited in Asia.

Finding a Mediterranean itinerary that visits Africa can be a bit more challenging, but the ports to look for include Alexandria, Egypt; Casablanca, Morocco; and Tunis, Tunisia. If you want to hit three continents in one voyage, look for 10- to 14-night itineraries on lines such as Norwegian, Celebrity and Holland America.

Baltic cruise itineraries are also mostly seven nights or longer. Because the Baltic countries are farther north, chilly weather is possible even in mid-summer in the Baltic. Average high temperatures in Copenhagen, for example, are barely 70 degrees Fahrenheit during June, July and August. Helsinki is a degree or two cooler. Because of the climate, cruise ships only sail these waters from April through September.

Related: The best time to go on a cruise

Departure ports may be cities located on the Baltic, like Copenhagen, Stockholm or Warnemunde, Germany, or outside the Baltic, as in Southampton, England, or Amsterdam and Rotterdam in The Netherlands. As with Mediterranean cruises, you’ll find a mix of round-trip cruises beginning and ending in the same port city and one-way itineraries — many of which begin outside the Baltic Sea and end at a Baltic port.

The opportunity to create longer journeys by connecting multiple cruises is available in the Baltic. Those usually include Northern European or United Kingdom add-ons before or after your Baltic cruise. Think Stockholm to Edinburgh, Scotland. After a thorough cruise of the Baltic Sea, the itinerary might include multiple stops in the fjords of Norway before ending in the U.K. Baltic cruises that begin or end outside the confines of the Baltic Sea often have at least one day at sea, sometimes more.

Country counters rejoice! A solid itinerary within the Baltic can add eight countries to your list; add-ons in the North Sea will get you another handful if you plan carefully.

Prior to March 2022, Baltic cruises often included a stop in the Russian port of St. Petersburg. Currently, no cruise lines catering to Westerners call on Russian ports.

Ports of call

The list of ports of call in the Mediterranean is lengthy, ranging from European mainland ports like Dubrovnik, Zadar, Naples, Nice and Istanbul to popular ports on the islands of Sardinia, Corfu, Crete, Mykonos and Santorini, all of which can accommodate ships of all sizes.

Smaller cruise ships have an even greater range of options. Ports you may never have heard of — such as Durres, Albania or Bonifacio, France, on the island of Corsica — are listed in the itineraries of small-ship lines like Emerald and Ponant. Ports you’ve only dreamt of visiting, like Capri, Amalfi or Jerusalem, are surprisingly accessible on several cruise lines sailing the Mediterranean, including Windstar, Azamara and Celebrity.

Ports of call in the Baltic include recognizable city names like Copenhagen, Helsinki, Gdansk and Stockholm, along with cities you may be less familiar with — Visby, Tallinn and Riga, in Sweden, Estonia and Latvia, respectively.

Copenhagen is rich in architecture and seaside charm. Warnemunde, Germany, is the gateway port to Berlin. Cruise lines often schedule overnight stays there to allow ample time to explore the city, a train ride away from the port. Stockholm is another Baltic port where some ships overnight, allowing passengers to enjoy the city’s nightlife.

Shore excursions and activities

The range of shore activities in the Mediterranean is vast. In Rome, Naples, Athens, Nafplion, Crete, Corinth, Olympia, Santorini and Kusadasi, you can explore ancient Greek and Roman historical sites. In Istanbul, Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Corfu, Florence and Venice, tours focus on more recent art, architecture and history.

You’ll find vineyard and winery tours from almost every port in Italy and along the French Riviera (like Marseilles). Olive farm tours are popular from most ports of call in Greece but don’t rule out Greek wineries if your cruise itinerary takes you there.

Foodie tours are available in almost every port in the Mediterranean. The best include food-themed walking tours in Athens, truffle hunting tours from Livorno, Italy, and tapas tours in Barcelona. Or, you can do what I do and make it a point to sample local fare like pizza and gelato in every port.

Active tours in the Mediterranean include abundant choices for hiking and biking. If you’re itching to dip your toes into the blue Mediterranean waters, you’ll find beaches on almost all the Greek islands. Not every ship offers beachy shore excursions, so you may be on your own getting to them.

The easiest beach excursions are on Santorini, Crete and Mykonos. The most stunning beach I’ve ever seen is Myrtos Beach on the Greek island of Kefalonia. It’s not near the cruise port, but half-day excursions are available to take you there.

And let’s not forget the beaches of the French Riviera or Barcelona’s beautiful stretches of sand.

The most surprising beaches in the Mediterranean include those along the crystal-clear waters of the upper Adriatic. Trieste (where some ships dock for Venice), Koper in Slovenia and Zadar in Croatia all have beaches (some pebble rather than sand) accessible from the cruise ports. If more active water sports are your thing, boating, snorkeling and even scuba diving are easily arranged on Santorini, Crete and Kefalonia and in Zadar.

Related: Avoid these 10 mistakes when booking cruise shore excursions

Baltic destinations also offer beaches and watersports, but you’re more likely to find a scenic boat ride than jetskiing, and beaches are more likely to be enjoyed through windy walks along the shore than sunbathing and swimming. If the weather is suitable, the best beaches are in Copenhagen, Warnemunde and Stockholm. Boat rides, both slow scenic cruises and thrilling speed boat rides are popular throughout the Baltic. Boats are the ideal way to experience Copenhagen.

Land-based activities in the Baltic lean toward city tours, either via hop-on-hop-off buses or sometimes walking tours. Expect landmarks and museums of all sorts, many focusing on local events or areas of importance. Riga, Lithuania, and Tallinn, Estonia, both have museums focused on the Soviet occupation of those countries, for example.

Lighthouses and castles are some landmarks you can visit in the Baltic. Look for castles and fortresses in Gdansk, Copenhagen and Helsinki. Lighthouse excursions are possible in Kiel and Warnemunde, Germany. You can visit a medieval village in Old Town in Tallinn and a Viking village near Copenhagen.

Active tours on Baltic cruises include hiking and biking, available in almost every port. Kayaking is often easy to arrange if the weather turns out nice.

Winery visits are possible from ports in Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Estonia and Poland but may not be offered by your cruise ship. You may have to seek them out and arrange your own tour guide or transportation. Brewery tours are considerably easier to arrange throughout the Baltic. Foodie tours include those that focus on cheese, pastries, meats and seafood. Walking food tours are possible in the larger cities, and farm visits with lunch are a popular way to experience the region’s cuisine.

Bottom line: Baltic vs. Mediterranean cruises

What you want to experience on a European cruise can help determine whether you’d enjoy a Mediterranean or a Baltic cruise more. Both regions are loaded with visits to stunning European ports where you can experience the food, history and culture through tours and by simply walking the streets mingling with locals.

On a Mediterranean cruise, you gain the ability to add one or even two continents to your list of places traveled to, but if you’re trying to push your country count higher, a Baltic cruise can help you out based on the sheer number of countries it’s possible to visit on a single cruise.

Weather in the Med is more likely to be warm and sunny, allowing for more time enjoying water sports or lounging on a beach. But if escaping blistering summer heat at home is your chief objective, the crisp air in the Baltic may be what you need to reset on vacation.

Both regions have dozens of cruise lines to choose from, starting with mainstream lines you may already know but also including premium and luxury lines you may be longing to try. Transportation to and from Europe can be slightly easier and cheaper to Mediterranean departure ports when compared to some Baltic ports, but there are options for round-trip Baltic cruises from London that serve as a workaround.

The bottom line, then, is that it comes down to personal preferences. Ancient history or something more recent? Beach time or intensive sightseeing? Sample some of the world’s best wines or the world’s best beers? Either way you go, you can expect the cruise adventure of a lifetime.

Fjords, Pharaohs or Koalas? Time to Plan for Your Next Eclipse.

If you can’t get enough of totality, or missed out this time, you’ll have three more chances in the next four years in destinations like Iceland, Spain, Egypt and Australia.

A small, black disk surrounded by a bright, white halo suspended in a mostly dark sky over the still waters of a lake in which dim, golden light from the horizon is reflecting. There are dark hills and mountains beyond the lake.

By Danielle Dowling

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

mediterranean travel itinerary

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”

Expert Tips for Discerning Travelers

The best time to visit the Mediterranean is between May and June, and again from September to October. These months represent spring and fall respectively, boasting warm weather and fewer crowds than in summer.

The peak summer months of July and August are hot and overcrowded. While travelers can expect great weather at this time, outdoor activities may be canceled if temperatures rise over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Crowded beach days can also become overwhelming and distract from the splendors of the Mediterranean seascape.

The Mediterranean is huge and can cover a lot of experiences, places, and cultures, but two weeks in the Mediterranean can give you the best opportunity to explore. Whether discovering the Iberian Peninsula, touring a single country, or island hopping around different archipelagoes, a two-week Mediterranean vacation can take you from Greek ruins to French romance, Spanish passion to Portuguese wine, or other exciting combinations.

We typically advise that travelers book trips three months in advance. That said, booking five to six months in advance will give you a better chance of securing ideal accommodation during busy travel seasons.

To enjoy a stress-free and successful Mediterranean vacation travelers should plan ahead of time. Summer vacations in the Mediterranean are popular and planning will help you navigate the crowds and expensive rates. Booking well in advance will ensure you get the best deals possible for your chosen itinerary.
