During the Spanish Colonial Period, Mexico was known as “Nuevo Mexico.” It served as a vital river trading seaport in 1581, and its name paid homage to Mexico City, a part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, to which the Philippines once belonged. Thousands of Mexican immigrants arrived in Mexico, Pampanga, during this time, leaving a lasting cultural influence.

Mexico, Pampanga, even became the capital of the newly formed province of Pampanga. Gaspar de San Agustin, a historian, described Mexico as “beautiful and charming.” The Parish of Santa Monica, an opulent stone and tile church, was erected in 1581. Mexico was also once part of the City of San Fernando, which included the area now known as Angeles City.

In 1660, a local leader named Don Francisco Maniago led the Pampanga Revolt against the Spanish Regime due to forced labor and rice tributes. However, in 1661, the revolt was quelled. As a consequence, Mexico lost its political status, with the provincial capital shifting to Bacolor. Nonetheless, it retained its economic significance, particularly among the Lúsung Chinese and their mestizo descendants.

The 18th century witnessed the growth of business and social ties among Chinese dealers and their mestizo de sangley descendants in Mexico, Guagua, and Malabon. This economic hub in Mexico became known as the Parián, similar to the Chinese sector in Manila.

When the Americans took over as colonial rulers, General Maximino Hizon led Kapampángans against the Spaniards under Emilio Aguinaldo. He was later apprehended by the Americans in 1901 and exiled to Guam, where he passed away on September 1, 1901.

Museo Ning Angeles used to be the Municipio del Pueblo or the Town Hall of Angeles City until 1998. 

Constructed in 1922, the two-story building stood guard over Angeles City, witnessing its growth and development throughout the decades.

The museum, which opened in 1999, gives a glimpse of Angeles City’s history through its memorabilia display. 

The museum also serves as a venue for art classes, cultural performances, and exhibits of local artists.

The Pamintuan Mansion is a Spanish-era colonial home that has a beautifully preserved architecture and design. 

It is where the first Philippine President, Emilio Aguinaldo, stood to celebrate the first anniversary of Philippine independence from Spain.

Now open to tourists as a museum, the Pamintuan Mansion offers a view of what life was like for one of the influential families in the province.

Wash away your stress by taking a dip at Miyamit Falls in Porac, Pampanga. Reaching this hidden gem at the heart of the province involves a long trek, but the view is worth the sweat.

It’s easy to be mesmerized by the stunning nature view and the sound of the water hitting the rocks as it makes its way down to the pool.

There is no entrance fee to the Miyamit Falls, but you need to secure a permit from the Porac municipal hall.

If you want to try a 3- to 4-hour, 12-course menu of the best of Kapampangan cooking, get reservations at Bale Dutung in Angeles City, one of the best Pampanga restaurants  and tasting menu restaurants near Manila .

Run by Chef Claude Tayag and his wife, Mary Ann, the private dining restaurant offers a perfect venue for quiet, intimate family gatherings.

Due to popular demand, they now also have an Anthony Bourdain menu, inspired by the late chef/travel host/writer’s visit to the restaurant.

As Bale Dutung also serves as the Tayags’ home, the restaurant only opens occasionally to diners. It’s best to check their website for the latest restaurant schedule and call for reservations.

For sightseeing in Pampanga, visit the Candaba Swamp where you see white egrets, Philippine ducks, white-breasted herons, streaked reed-warbler, and other birds.

The swamp has about 32,000 hectares of wetland, which includes freshwater pools, marshes, and grasslands.

Migratory birds usually make the trip to the Candaba Swamp from October to February to escape the harsh winter conditions in China and Russia.

16. Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth with Razon’s Halo-Halo

It’s a simple dessert made with shaved ice, creamy milk, leche flan, macapuno, and saging na saba, but hands down, halo-halo is one of the best desserts in the Philippines.

Razon’s of Guagua shops can be found all over Pampanga, so you can get your halo-halo fix at any time during your trip.

As the terminus of the tragic Bataan Death March in 1942, this train station ruins served as a silent witness to the suffering of Filipino and American soldiers under the Japanese forces right after the fall of Bataan.

Thousands of exhausted and dying prisoners-of-war were loaded into box carts at this station to be sent to Camp O’Donnell in nearby Capas, Tarlac.

Fondly called by locals as Pisambang Maragul (“Big Church”), the Holy Rosary Parish Church is a living church and a national historical site in Angeles, Pampanga.

Construction of the church began in 1877 and was built under the “polo y servicio” labor system, the forced, unpaid labor system for Filipino native men imposed by the Spanish colonial government.

Mount Pinatubo is an active stratovolcano that erupted last in 1991. Located in Magalang, Angeles City Flying Club offers introductory ultralight alight sport flying where you can enjoy flying in the air for several minutes while enjoying the view of the farmlands in Pampanga!

The ultralight adventure lasts 15 minutes but is sure to be a lasting memory. Aside from this activity, you can also full access at the club’s facilities including a resort-styled pool and a café serving an assortment of snacks and cold drinks.

This one should go into your bucket list of best things to do in Pampanga! Every year, the province celebrates the Hot Air Balloon Festival in the Clark Freeport Zone. The festival dates vary but is usually scheduled in January or February.

During the festival, you can ride a hot air balloon and see the stunning landscape of Pampanga from above. Don’t forget to bring a good camera because this is one of the best experiences you won’t forget.

Aside from the hot air balloons, the festival also hosts other sporting events including skydiving, ultralight flying, precision flying, aircraft maneuvers, and more. You can also join exciting concerts and trade fair.

San Guillermo Parish Church is a Spanish Colonial-era church located in Bacolor, Pampanga. It was originally constructed in 1576 and is named after the town’s patron saint. Aside from its beautiful baroque design, this church is unusual in that it is half-buried. In fact, locals also call it the Sunken Church of Bacolor , referring to how it got overflowed with lahar from the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991.

Old Sta. Monica Church Belltower

Have you been to one of the proudest towns of Pampanga? I am sure, the first time you have heard this town, you thought of a country and confused that there is also a place named that way in the Philippines. Mexico is one of Pampanga’s prides when it comes to attractions and landmarks that pictures the province’s natural wonders.

When visiting in Pampanga, don’t pass the chance to visit Mexico. You are lucky if you have family living in the place, but if you don’t have, I can tour you to the town’s landmarks that may get your attention to visit the place.

• Abacan Bridge also known as the San Jose Malino-Anao Bridge is one of the old structures in Mexico which connects the town’s northern and southern villages. The Abacan River is one of the largest waterways in Pampanga which stretches from upstream Angeles City to Mexico. The stream merges downstream with the larger Pampanga River.
• Hizon Ancestral House is the home of Kapampangan culinary authority Lillian Lising Borromeo. The heritage house was built in 1916 and was originally owned by the family of Dona Maura Hizon-Lorenzo, a descendant of Mexico’s early settlers Dona Paula David-Hizon and Don Vicente Hizon.
• Maximino Hizon Monument is the Monument of the greatest Kapampangan revolutionary hero stands at the grounds of the Municipal Plaza on the side of the Municipal Hall. The Monument was built in memory of General Maximino Hipolito Hizon, a brave and extraordinary young man who joined the Katipunan in 1896 and became the Comandante General of Pampanga in the latter part of the revolution. Born in May 9, 1870 in Parian, Mexico, he supported the Revolutionary Government of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. Hizon also played an important role in the Philippine-American war under Aguinaldo’s regime. One of his most difficult missions was to recapture Manila from the Americans. When he was captured along with the other Katipuneros, Apolinario Mabini, Artemio Ricarte and Mariano Llanera, he chose to be exiled rather than collaborate with the colonizers.
• National Grid Corporation is the largest sub-station of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) in Central Luzon is based in Mexico. NGCP is a private corporation that maintains and operates the power transmission network of the Philippines. NGCP is a joint venture of the State Grid Corporation of China, Monte Oro Grid Resource of the Philippines and Calaca High Power Corporation. NGCP took over TransCo on 15 January 2009. The corporation was inaugurated in Manila by Zheng Baosen, vice-president of the State Grid Corporation of China. This venture is the biggest investment made by China in the Philippines, in which 40% is owned by China
• Old Sta. Monica Church Belltower is the only remnant of the Sta. Monica Parish Church that was built by Spanish friar, Fr. Jose dela Cruz in 1665. The tower is made of stone and bricks. It is believed to be one of the oldest remaining structures in Pampanga that depicts the Hispanic period and the deep Catholic faith of the people of Mexico.
• Rotonda Sto. Domingo is one of the few structures that serves as turning point for different major roads in Mexico. Rotonda Sto. Domingo has two roads leading to Sta. Ana town and the town proper.
• San Jose Matulid Chapel is believed to be the oldest church in Pampanga. Although there are no written records that show the exact construction of the chapel, the locals claim that it is older than the Sta. Monica Parish Church which was built by the Augustinian friars in 1665. San Jose Matulid chapel could have been built in the late 1580’s.
• Both the Sta. Monica Parish Church and the St. Benedict’s Institution de Mexico were built by Fr. Jose dela Cruz in 1665. However, prior to this account, another author claimed that the church and the convent were severely damaged by earthquakes in 1645 and 1658. Should this be true, the structures could have been older and were only restored in 1665. The old church reveals characteristics of a typically Mexican-Aztec architecture with its massive and, round columns. In 1922, Rev. Fr. Felipe Roque constructed a beautiful façade of the church which still stands today.

• There are other subdivisions in Mexico town that are equally comfortable and spacious, most of which became a sanctuary to those who love the fusion of an urban and rural setting. These are the Ligaya Village in San Antonio, Panorama Heights, Golden Estate, Villa St. Raphael, Villa de San Agustin and St.Peter’s Village all in Camuning, Nueva Villa in Sta. Cruz, Sto Domingo Village in San Jose Matulid, El Grande Mansionette in Lagundi, Lapid’s Ville and Sta. Clara Subdivision both in Sapang Maisac and Northville and Royal Meadows in Tangle.

Where to stay?

Getting to Pampanga

Motorists and commuters will arrive in Pampanga in just 1-½ hours by car or bus from Manila through the North Luzon Expressway exiting via San Fernando, Angeles or Dau Toll Plaza. All bus lines linking Manila with Baguio, Pangasinan, and Ilocos pass through the province. Philippine Rabbit serves the provincial capital (San Fernando) from Manila. Victory Liner links Angeles City and Olongapo City. Baliwag Transit and E. Jose Transport operates route services from Olongapo City to Cabanatuan City in Nueva Ecija via San Fernando, Pampanga. Arayat Express also serves the San Fernando-Cabanatuan route. Other buses that pass through the towns of Pampanga include Dagupan Bus Lines, Dangwa Tranco, Five Star Bus Co., Farinas Transit, Franco Federico Lines, Maria De Leon Trans, Partas Trans Co. and Viron Transit. Also, there are jeepneys and/or mini-buses in each town or city that serve inter-zonal points towards other parts of the province.

Expect to pass through long steep ascents and descents, towering hardwood trees, and rope segments. Hikers are advised to bring plenty of water, a change of clothes, mosquito repellant, snacks, and walking sticks. At the summit, get a spectacular view of the Pampanga plains, Pampanga river, rice fields, and nearby mountains. 

Puning Hot Spring

After the grueling hikes, tourists can relax at the Puning Hot Spring. Puning Hot Spring is one of the rustic nature tourist attractions located in Angeles, Pampanga.

Puning Hot Spring is a hot spring along the Sacobia River where the water temperatures range from 40 degrees to 70 degrees. The area somehow looks like a furnace because smoke billows endlessly from the mountain crevices. In this 32,000-hectare swamp filled with freshwater pools, marshes, and grasslands, the birds head to escape the cold weather in China and Russia.  ABOUT PAMPANGA  

Before we travel, let’s have quick trivia about Pampanga.

•  Pampanga is located in the Central Luzon region. The capital of it is the City of San Fernando, Pampanga.
•  Pampanga is near with Bataan and Zambales to the west, Tarlac and Nueva Ecija to the north, and Bulacan to the southeast. It also lies on the northern shore of Manila Bay.
•  Angeles City is classified as a first-class, highly-urbanized city. Although the place is within Pampanga, the place has own government independent of Pampanga.
•  Diosdado Macapagal International Airport is located at Clark Freeport Zone in Angeles and Mabalacat City.
• Pampanga is known as the “The Culinary of the Philippines”.
•  Pampanga has two Philippine Air Force air bases: Basa Air Base located in Florida Blanca, and the other one is the former U.S. Clark Air Base found in Angeles City.

Mt. Pinatubo (Pampanga Tourist Attractions | Travel Guide )

MOUNT PINATUBO

One of the most popular Pampanga Tourist Attractions is the Mount Pinatubo. For the adventurous souls, trekking to Mount Pinatubo is a must-experience adventure. You can try this trip and avail a Mount Pinatubo day tour package. Most travel packages include transfers from Manila to Mount Pinatubo and vice versa.

FONTANA WATER PARK

This water-theme park located at Clark Freeport one has 10 water park features with six kinds of waves as high as three feet. There is also a slide which is known as the Big Horn – a slide wherein you will ride a floating tube that twists and turn before you splash in a four-foot-deep pool. This Pampanga Tourist Attraction has water park features such as an idle river, three giant aqua exciting slides, a water factory, an Olympic-size pool, a hot spring and a lagoon pool, a refreshing water cottage slide, and a kiddie pool.

MIYAMIT FALLS

Are you up for some trekking? Then visiting the Miyamit Falls, located in Porac, Pampanga would be great for you. Although ATVs are available, it’s better to walk for four hours to enjoy and to be amazed by the beauty of nature. Just make sure to garb properly when deciding to on trekking and don’t forget to wear the right shoes.

DECA WAKEBOARD PARK

If going to Nuvali or Davao is difficult for you, you can try this place if you want to experience wakeboarding. This place is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

PRADERA WAKE PARK

Pradera Wake Park is built in Prado Siongco in Lubao. The place uses regeneration lake wherein it is clean 24 hours and it does not use any chemicals. It also has villas and hotel rooms waiting for guests who would want to stay during their visit. Aside from the wake park, it has an 18-hole golf course. THE SANDBOX

This place has Avatar One, a roller coaster zip line with 180 meters long and 12 meters high. The SandBox also offers a Giant Swing and Aerial Walk Challenge which challenges your agility, balance, and flexibility through nets and rope walkways. Also, it has an Adventure Tower, a 15-meter structure that offers rappelling, wall climbing, and free falling. Other attractions include ATV rides and outdoor archery.

ZOOCOBIA FUN ZOO

This 50-hectare zoo and theme park has the following features: a labyrinth and a garden maze full of animal topiaries, a unique gallery of stuffed real animals preserved, Zooc, a gravity car track that has a unique steering and braking system that can maneuver the gravity car down the 400-meter track. DINOSAURS ISLAND

Kids and adults will surely love the Dinosaurs Island because the place offers a life-size, moving dinosaur displays, a Fossil Museum and a World of Fun. It also has an Adventure Ride wherein you can ride an imitation of the extinct creature, a Jurassic Safari Ride wherein you can experience being chased by a dinosaur, a 7D Super Screen Theater, and the replicas of the Wonders of the World.

PARADISE RANCH

If you want to try Baguio in Pampanga, then you should try the Paradise Ranch. With the beautiful scenery of the place, you and your family will surely have fun. At Paradise Ranch, you can feed the fishes, check out the butterflies in the Butterfly Kingdom, walk through their aviary to see the magnificent peacock, ostriches, and the well-known “Ibong Adarna.”

The Hot Air Balloon Festival  is one of the most talked about festival in the country (Pampanga Tourist Attractions | Travel Guide)

HOT AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL 

This festival can be seen during January or February in Clark Freeport Zone and March in Lubao, Pampanga. You can ride a hot air balloon. Aside from riding it, it has a lot of activities such as kite flying, gliding, skydiving, powered paragliding, and searching and rescuing flight demonstrations. It also offers aviation exercises and aircraft exhibitions. This exciting festival is already one of the most celebrated Pampanga Tourist Attractions.

NAYONG FILIPINO

This 45-hectare tourist attraction has replicas of the Philippines’ most well-known sights, a miniature version of Magellan’s Cross and Chocolate Hills, and the statutes of our national heroes and political figures. It also has the Mabini House wherein you can see the mini-museum of Pampanga artifacts, which was used in the Paleolithic Age, Neolithic Period and the Metal Age Period. Opposite the Mabini House is the Jose Rizal’s house and the shrine/mansion of President Emilio Aguinaldo with artifacts and memorabilia. There is also the Spanish Culture and Religion Museum and Philippine Museum. Moreover, the place has Lagoon wherein the guests can go boating and fishing. Tuwali House which can be seen in Aeta Village and Ifugao Village is also featured in the place.

Giant Lantern Festival (Pampanga Tourist Attractions | Travel Guide)

GIANT LANTERN FESTIVAL

If you want to experience watching giant lanterns during December, you can go to this event. These 16 feet giant lanterns are exhibited within the part of San Fernando, Pampanga in the whole month of December. That is the reason why San Fernando, Pampanga is known as “Christmas Capital of the Philippines.”

AIRFORCE CITY PARK

If you like to see the actual fighter aircraft used in World War II, you can visit this place. It also has a library wherein you can read books.

PUNING HOT SPRING

Another exciting attraction in Pampanga is the Puning Hot Spring. This Hot Spring is considered as an Aeta Ancestral Land which is located at Brgy. Sapang Bato. It is surrounded by lush foliage. It has 11 natural hot springs. The place also has two heated pools, and a sand spa with hot mud coming from Mount Pinatubo. The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) confirmed that it has zero coliform and pH level at neutral 7.5 pH.

If you like old Western environment, you can try this place because it has complete replica recreations of a saloon and a telegraph office. You can also do activities such as riding lessons, adventure, and scenic trail rides, carriage tours, photo opportunities, and shopping.

This place is a former grain storehouse that was built in 1840 and later became a restaurant in 1973. Moreover, 8 flavors of pizza. Camalig offers an exciting Capampangan Buffet prepared by Chef Bonits Pamintuan. They use fresh ingredients available in the market cooked the traditional Kapampangan way.

HOW TO GET TO PAMPANGA

Pampanga can access by land and air. For International Tourists, you can fly in via Clark International Airport in Clark Freeport Zone. If Clark Airport is not feasible for you, you can fly in at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila and take a bus going to the province.

hoping to visit Pampanga very soon! 🙂 I am from Quezon Province.

Pampanga is known as the Culinary Capital of the Philippines for all the mouthwatering reasons. A Pampanga food trip is all you need to taste the best dishes that the province has to offer.

Can you recommend good decent eateries near clark that specializes in kapangpangan dishes? I 9nly saw 2.

I was supposed to come there with a friend but now becoming by myself I’m interested in the culture how far is the bus ride from Manila to pampanga It really looks like it has some nice attractions it’s time I start living life take a chance

It is so nice to know how much development has happened in Pampanga after the Pinatubo eruption. Who would thought that Pinatubo’s crater will be a hit to tourists! Nice!

My husband was in the Philippines when Pinatubo erupted, he was one of the many US soldiers that removed ashes. It would be nice to see the place with our kids.

I want to visit Pampanga! I haven’t been to Fontana Water Park. Hope I can go there.
