Exploring the Rich History and Vibrant Culture of Mexico, Pampanga

Lea Ann David

Are you ready to embark on a journey to the vibrant Municipality of Mexico? Situated in the heart of the province of Pampanga, Region III, also known as Central Luzon, this first-class municipality has a rich history and an array of attractions that will captivate your senses. Join us as we dive into the fascinating world of Mexico, Pampanga, and discover its history, festivals, landmarks, and more.

History of Mexico, Pampanga

The origins of Mexico’s name are shrouded in history. Some believe it was derived from “Masicu or Maca-sicu,” while Spanish colonizers spelled it as “México.” Others claim it originated from “siku” (elbow), referring to the bends of the Abacan and Pampanga Rivers. Regardless of its etymology, Mexico, Pampanga, has a unique charm that beckons travelers to explore its past.

During the Spanish Colonial Period, Mexico was known as “Nuevo Mexico.” It served as a vital river trading seaport in 1581, and its name paid homage to Mexico City, a part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, to which the Philippines once belonged. Thousands of Mexican immigrants arrived in Mexico, Pampanga, during this time, leaving a lasting cultural influence.

Mexico, Pampanga, even became the capital of the newly formed province of Pampanga. Gaspar de San Agustin, a historian, described Mexico as “beautiful and charming.” The Parish of Santa Monica, an opulent stone and tile church, was erected in 1581. Mexico was also once part of the City of San Fernando, which included the area now known as Angeles City.

In 1660, a local leader named Don Francisco Maniago led the Pampanga Revolt against the Spanish Regime due to forced labor and rice tributes. However, in 1661, the revolt was quelled. As a consequence, Mexico lost its political status, with the provincial capital shifting to Bacolor. Nonetheless, it retained its economic significance, particularly among the Lúsung Chinese and their mestizo descendants.

The 18th century witnessed the growth of business and social ties among Chinese dealers and their mestizo de sangley descendants in Mexico, Guagua, and Malabon. This economic hub in Mexico became known as the Parián, similar to the Chinese sector in Manila.

When the Americans took over as colonial rulers, General Maximino Hizon led Kapampángans against the Spaniards under Emilio Aguinaldo. He was later apprehended by the Americans in 1901 and exiled to Guam, where he passed away on September 1, 1901.

Barangays in Mexico, Pampanga

Mexico is divided into 43 barangays, each with its unique character and charm. From Acli to Tangle, these barangays make up the tapestry of Mexico’s diverse community.

  • Mexico’s Town Fiesta (May 4) : Dedicated to Saint Monica, the mother of Saint Augustine, this celebration is a colorful and lively event.
  • Feast of Virgen dela Consolacion y Correa (September 4) : A unique celebration where locals obtain blessed cinctures, symbolizing the Virgin Mary’s gesture of consolation to Saint Monica.

This animatronic theme park will let you see life-sized dinosaur replicas that will make you feel like you’re transported back to the prehistoric era, including the Tyrannousaurus Rex, Iguanodon, Triceratops, and more.

Aside from the displays, it also features thrilling rides and attractions, a museum, a botanical garden, and others.

El Kabayo horseback riding - one of the best things to do in Pampanga

Yeehaw! Did you know that one of the best things to do in Pampanga is horseback riding? This activity is available at El Kabayo and is suitable even for newbie horseback riders.

El Kabayo features a facility inspired by old western movies. Unlike other horseback riding facilities in the country, the horses kept here were trained for horse sports or show circuit, with some horses having a championship blood line. You can find horoughbreds, standardbreds, quarter horses, and others in the horse line up.

If you are inexperienced riding a horse, you can avail of a lesson by a trainer. Otherwise, feel free to explore the green areas of Clark on your own.

Tara na sa Mexico Pampanga!

Old Sta. Monica Church Belltower

Have you been to one of the proudest towns of Pampanga? I am sure, the first time you have heard this town, you thought of a country and confused that there is also a place named that way in the Philippines. Mexico is one of Pampanga’s prides when it comes to attractions and landmarks that pictures the province’s natural wonders.

When visiting in Pampanga, don’t pass the chance to visit Mexico. You are lucky if you have family living in the place, but if you don’t have, I can tour you to the town’s landmarks that may get your attention to visit the place.

  • Abacan Bridge also known as the San Jose Malino-Anao Bridge is one of the old structures in Mexico which connects the town’s northern and southern villages. The Abacan River is one of the largest waterways in Pampanga which stretches from upstream Angeles City to Mexico. The stream merges downstream with the larger Pampanga River.
  • Hizon Ancestral House is the home of Kapampangan culinary authority Lillian Lising Borromeo. The heritage house was built in 1916 and was originally owned by the family of Dona Maura Hizon-Lorenzo, a descendant of Mexico’s early settlers Dona Paula David-Hizon and Don Vicente Hizon.
  • Maximino Hizon Monument is the Monument of the greatest Kapampangan revolutionary hero stands at the grounds of the Municipal Plaza on the side of the Municipal Hall. The Monument was built in memory of General Maximino Hipolito Hizon, a brave and extraordinary young man who joined the Katipunan in 1896 and became the Comandante General of Pampanga in the latter part of the revolution. Born in May 9, 1870 in Parian, Mexico, he supported the Revolutionary Government of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. Hizon also played an important role in the Philippine-American war under Aguinaldo’s regime. One of his most difficult missions was to recapture Manila from the Americans. When he was captured along with the other Katipuneros, Apolinario Mabini, Artemio Ricarte and Mariano Llanera, he chose to be exiled rather than collaborate with the colonizers.
  • National Grid Corporation is the largest sub-station of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) in Central Luzon is based in Mexico. • Old Sta. Monica Church Belltower is the only remnant of the Sta. Monica Parish Church that was built by Spanish friar, Fr. Jose dela Cruz in 1665. The tower is made of stone and bricks. It is believed to be one of the oldest remaining structures in Pampanga that depicts the Hispanic period and the deep Catholic faith of the people of Mexico.
  • Rotonda Sto. Domingo is one of the few structures that serves as turning point for different major roads in Mexico. Rotonda Sto. Domingo has two roads leading to Sta. Ana town and the town proper.
  • San Jose Matulid Chapel is believed to be the oldest church in Pampanga. Although there are no written records that show the exact construction of the chapel, the locals claim that it is older than the Sta. Monica Parish Church which was built by the Augustinian friars in 1665. San Jose Matulid chapel could have been built in the late 1580’s.
  • Both the Sta. Monica Parish Church and the St. Benedict’s Institution de Mexico were built by Fr. Jose dela Cruz in 1665. However, prior to this account, another author claimed that the church and the convent were severely damaged by earthquakes in 1645 and 1658. Should this be true, the structures could have been older and were only restored in 1665. The old church reveals characteristics of a typically Mexican-Aztec architecture with its massive and, round columns. In 1922, Rev. Fr. Felipe Roque constructed a beautiful façade of the church which still stands today.

But did you know that Razon’s originated in Guagua Pampanga? It all started with the three sisters when their version of halo-halo became a hit from their small stall inside their ancestral home in 1972. What are the nature tourist attractions in Pampanga?

  • Mount Pinatubo

Mount Arayat

  • Puning Hot Spring
  • Miyamit Falls
  • Candaba Swamp

Pampanga is a popular travel destination in Central Luzon and is known as the Culinary Capital of the Philippines. The province is every foodie’s haven with iconic dishes like sisig and desserts like halo-halo. Pampanga is also where you can find well-preserved ancestral homes, thrilling adventure parks, and bright festivals. But if you’re looking for more nature-inspired activities when visiting Pampanga, you are also in for a great time. Unknown to many, Pampanga is rich in natural wonders like majestic cascading waterfalls, stunning mountain views, and natural pools. Here are five nature tourist attractions in Pampanga you should not miss out on visiting.

Discover the off-beaten ecotourism destinations of Pampanga. Each one will surely make your vacation more enjoyable and memorable.

Mount Pinatubo

Mount Pinatubo

Mount Pinatubo is one of the top tourist attractions not just in Pampanga but in the Philippines as a whole. Situated in between Pampanga, Tarlac, and Zambales, Mount  Pinatubo is an active volcano. Its eruption in 1991 was a historical event as it was the second-largest eruption that occurred during the 20th century.

The beauty of Mount Pinatubo lies in its crater lake. Depending on the season, the water color of the lake varies from blue-green to deep-blue. To see the crater lake, tourists will have to embark on an exciting journey on a 4×4 truck until reaching the drop-off point where the hiking begins. Enjoy passing through rocky trails, surface streams, and lahar fields. The hike takes 2.5 hours before reaching the spectacular crater lake. Once you see the glittering lake with massive rock formations, you’ll find that the sweat is well worth it.

There are spots at Mount Pinatubo that are perfect for selfies and beautiful portraits, so make sure to capture the once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Mount Arayat

Mount Arayat is a potentially active stratovolcano located in Pampanga. Hiking to the top of Mount Arayat is perfect for tourists looking for a challenging yet fulfilling experience as it takes 3 to 4 hours to reach the peak. If you’re going for a day hike, it is advisable to start the hike as early as 5 AM.

When wanting to climb Mt. Arayat, there are two jump-off points: Arayat (986 meters above sea level) and Magalang (1,026 meters above sea level). Experienced hikers can choose the Magalang jump-off because it is more difficult to traverse.

Expect to pass through long steep ascents and descents, towering hardwood trees, and rope segments. Hikers are advised to bring plenty of water, a change of clothes, mosquito repellant, snacks, and walking sticks. At the summit, get a spectacular view of the Pampanga plains, Pampanga river, rice fields, and nearby mountains.

Puning Hot Spring

After the grueling hikes, tourists can relax at the Puning Hot Spring. Puning Hot Spring is one of the rustic nature tourist attractions located in Angeles, Pampanga.

Puning Hot Spring is a hot spring along the Sacobia River where the water temperatures range from 40 degrees to 70 degrees. The area somehow looks like a furnace because smoke billows endlessly from the mountain crevices. There are also lush vegetation and grand rock formations surrounding the spring, making it a paradise for nature lovers. Overall, there are 11 natural hot springs and two heated pools.

Visit the Puning Hot Spring for a therapeutic bath. Aside from this relaxing moment, tourists can also fill their tummies with delicious dishes at the buffet.

Miyamit Falls

Wash away the stress from your hectic daily schedules by taking a dip at Miyamit Falls located in Porac, Pampanga. Tourists will need to trek to reach the Miyamit Falls. Nonetheless, everyone will find that the scenic view waiting is worth the sweat.

It is not hard to be mesmerized by the unspoiled mountain scenery and the sound of cascading waters of the Miyamit Falls. Its natural pools can offer you instant relaxation with its cool and crystal-clear waters. There is no entrance fee paid to visit Miyamit Falls, but a permit needs to be secured from the Porac Municipal Hall.

Candaba Swamp

Candaba Swamp

From the months of October to February, thousands of great white egrets, wild ducks, white-bellied herons, speckled reed-warblers, and other migratory birds from other countries fly all the way to the Candaba Swamp in Pampanga.

In this 32,000-hectare swamp filled with freshwater pools, marshes, and grasslands, the birds head to escape the cold weather in China and Russia. Bring a pair of binoculars and travel to Candaba before sunrise to see the different bird species in their natural habitat. Tourists will surely come home with a deeper appreciation for Mother Nature after visiting the Candaba Swamp.

Key Takeaway

Add these nature tourist attractions in Pampanga to your travel list this year! Whether you are traveling with family or friends, there is so much to see in Pampanga . And it’s not just because Pampanga is the Culinary Capital of the Philippines, but also because it is filled with scenic natural destinations that fall nothing short of majestic.
