On this day each month, a street party is held in Little Havana called Viernes Cultural that features an array of music performers, dancers, Cuban cuisine, and theater performances.

Learn More About Miami Shore Excursions

Top things to do in miami, explore everglades national park.

Miami is located close to Everglades National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The best way to fully comprehend the rich nature and wildlife of the Everglades is to take an airboat tour with a knowledgeable guide who will tell you about the history of the Everglades and point out its most popular feature: the many alligators that call it home. When the guide starts telling you about some of the stories surrounding these prehistoric looking creatures, we won’t blame you if you scoot a little bit farther from the edge of the boat.

Walk Around Vizcaya Museum & Gardens

Due to its wet, humid climate, gardens in Miami are able to prosper into lush, beautiful landscapes. One of the highlights of the Miami garden scene is the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, where you’ll find an Italian-style mansion surrounded by manicured gardens adorned with lovely sculptures and a view of sparkling Biscayne Bay.

See Animals at Zoo Miami

A popular attraction in Miami for families is Zoo Miami, where you can see over 3,000 animal species. Kids have a chance to feed giraffes, rhinos, and camels, as well as play in the splash pads. Rent a Safari Cycle to navigate the expansive grounds of the zoo.

Pretend You’re Under the Sea at Miami Seaquarium

Miami Seaquarium is another fun outing in Miami that is centered around animals, only here you’ll see ocean mammals. The Seaquarium features a variety of species, including bottlenose dolphins, crocodiles, and sea lions. Children will love the fact that there’s an onsite play structure (the Salty’s Pirate Playground) and a touch pool where they can feel the silky skin of stingrays. Visitors of all ages will be wowed by the Sea Trek Reef Encounter, an underwater walking path through the aquarium.

What should I eat in Miami?

Miami’s food scene is a fusion of international flavors, but you’ll find a particular Latin flair going through many of the dishes. While in Miami, there are some dishes that stand out from the rest, and five you should try are:

Arepas: This popular South American food item is also popular in Miami. It infuses cheese into a flattened, folded pastry, which is then cooked until the dough turns golden.

Ceviche: With the close proximity to the sea, you can find a variety of ceviche in Miami, which typically mixes cold seafood with any number of ingredients from fruit to salsa.

Chicharrones: If you’re a meat-lover, you can’t miss trying chicharrones in Miami, which are pork skins that are deep-fried and have a salty aftertaste.

Florida Stone Crab: If you’re visiting between October and March, try the local seafood delicacy of stone crab, served chilled on ice. The meat of the stone crab claw is known for its tenderness and hint of sweetness.

Cuban Sandwich: This iconic Miami dish is a sandwich made with Cuban bread. In between the slices of bread, you’ll find a pile of delicious ingredients like roasted pork, baked ham, gooey Swiss cheese, dill pickles, and yellow mustard.

When it comes to drinks, you’ll likely be able to find your favorite libation at one of the many bars and nightclubs lining the streets of Miami Beach. However, if you want to try a local specialty, look for a mojito or a Miami Vice.

What is the culture and history of Miami?

The culture of Miami has been largely influenced by the influx of immigrants to the city over the past 80 years, giving it an intriguing multicultural scene that extends to the arts, music, beach, and nightlife. You can find Latin flair throughout the city before departing on one of our cruises from Miami, along with a distinctly Caribbean vibe, especially when you’re in the Little Havana and Little Haiti areas of the city. Beach bars intermingle with nightclubs, and the laidback lifestyle mixed with the ritzy nightclubs that attract the rich and famous from all around the world create an interesting dichotomy.

Where can I go shopping near the Miami cruise port?

It’s not hard to find places to shop in Miami, but if there’s a particular type of shop you’re after, certain areas of the city are best. The Design District of Miami is known for its art galleries and high-end boutiques.

For clothing, you’ll find designer boutiques at Bal Harbor, and more clothing stores along Collins Avenue or Lincoln Road in Miami Beach. You’ll also find some shopping with an international flair in Little Havana or along historic Española Way in Miami Beach.

For jewelry and local crafts plus more fashion and trinkets, the Miami Fair Trade Marketplace is a great place to shop both for the variety and because you can be assured that souvenirs were made in fair and safe working conditions.

For a fun shopping mall experience with a quintessential Miami vibe, head to Bayside Marketplace. This mall has open-air walkways leading to over 100 shops. At this mall, you’ll also find restaurants and bars, street performers and live music, and even a launchpad for boat tours along the Miami coastline.

Bargain shoppers who love a great deal on luxury finds will enjoy a day of shopping at Dolphin Mall, which is an outlet mall located close to Miami International Airport.

How can I get around Miami?

Public Transport

You have four main options for public transportation in Miami: the Metrobus, the Metrorail, the Metromover, and the trolley. The Metrobus is a bus system that runs all around the Greater Miami area, and the Metrorail runs from the north to the south end of Miami with stops in downtown.

The free Metromover covers downtown Miami and Brickell. It is a fully automated shuttle that runs on electricity. The Metromover also connects with the Metrorail and Metrobus at downtown stations. For traveling around Miami and Miami Beach, trolleys offer free services with many routes available.

For private transportation, taxis and rideshares are popular ways to get around Miami. Make sure you’re hailing a licensed taxi, which should have written that it’s a taxi cab on the side of the car and display the license for the driver and the taxi’s rate card inside the vehicle.

Miami International Airport (MIA)

If you’re embarking on one of our cruises from Miami and you don’t live within driving distance to the port, there’s a good chance you’re flying into Miami International Airport (MIA). Upon landing, you can get local information at the airport, where you’ll also find a bank, post office, pharmacy, baggage storage, ATM, and car rental companies.

If you’re flying in the night before your cruise (which we recommend to accommodate for possible flight delays), check with your hotel if they offer a shuttle from the airport. Otherwise, you have plenty of other options, including a 24-hour Super Shuttle van service, taxis, and buses. If you’re going straight to the cruise port from MIA, you can take a taxi to the cruise terminal or take the cruise shuttle bus that you can purchase tickets for through Celebrity Cruises.

What are the local currency and tipping customs?

The currency accepted in Miami is the U.S. dollar, and you’ll be able to find ATMs dispensing U.S. dollars all over the city. Tipping is very common and expected in Miami, especially in restaurants, bars, and taxis. A common tip for restaurants, taxis, and most other services is 15% to 20% of the total amount.

Cruise from Miami – the essential guide

Cruise from Miami watching the skyline

The port of Miami is home to the busiest passenger cruise terminal in the world. It has been the main gateway for cruise travelers exploring the Caribbean, the Bahamas, South America, and beyond for many years.

With an enviable location in southern Florida, Miami is one of three major cruise ports in Florida . And it is so much more than just your departure point.

Miami is synonymous with outdoor living, great nightlife, busy restaurants, numerous shopping opportunities, and endless beaches.

Quick navigation

The holiday hotspot of Miami

Over 20 cruise lines offer cruises starting in Miami, and 55 cruise ships use the port. So you can only imagine the number of cruise passengers in and out of the port yearly.

Check your cruise ticket to ensure you know which of the nine terminals your cruise ship uses. See below for more information on getting to the cruise port and finding the correct terminal.

A cruise from Miami means you can spend time in the city before you start your cruise vacation. The average time spent in Miami before a cruise is just three days. But you can see and do a lot within this time. So pack your beachwear and follow our suggested 3-day guide below.

Miami – the heat, the traffic, and the beach

The most common question we get regarding staying in Miami is about location. Is it best to stay on the beach or in the city? The good news is that they are easily accessible, so staying in one place will never rule out spending time in the other.

Most cruise guests choose a beach location. And not just famous South Beach. North Beach, Surfside, and Sunny Isles are further north of Miami Beach. Hotels here will be slightly less expensive.

Or choose Bal Harbour for an exclusive shopping and nightlife area that will command a higher price than the hotels.

Further afield, there are the famous Keys and plenty of islands around Miami to explore. If you have set your heart on visiting The Keys while in Florida, then be prepared for a 2-day trip, and we recommend that you overnight in Key West to make the most of your day. It’s just too far to drive there and back in one day.

How to get from Miami International Airport to downtown Miami or Miami Beach

Miami International Airport (MIA) is 2216km/10 miles east of South Beach and 11km/7 miles northeast of downtown Miami. Transfer time by taxi or Uber is around 25 minutes.

Taxicabs are outside the baggage collection areas. A journey to the beach, downtown, or the port is listed on the taxi window and is a fixed charge. You can pay by card or cash. There is no need to pre-book a taxi, as plenty are available.

Go to the designated taxi stand to find the official taxis. You will see uniformed airport employees there to help and guide you. If you have not booked a private transfer, avoid accepting rides from unsolicited people inside the terminal. Head for the official transport areas outside of your arrivals lounge.

Lyft, Uber, and Wingz

Download the app and use your favorite transport service, all serviced at the airport.

The MIA Mover

The MIA Mover is a free, elevated train connecting you from Miami International Airport to the Miami Intermodal Center (MIC). At this center, you find all the links for ground transportation, including rental car agencies, buses, and Tri-Rail.

Maimi Beach Bus

From Miami central station, a Miami Beach bus runs every 30 minutes. The comfortable bus goes to Miami Beach (41st Street to South Pointe Drive) and costs around $3 per person. There are luggage racks for your suitcases. Buy your ticket at the station before you get on board.

Also, a good rail link from Miami central station connects Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach with several stops, including Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale Airport, and downtown Fort Lauderdale. This is the Tri-Rail service. For around $5, you can travel from Miami Airport to Fort Lauderdale in just 40 minutes. This is a great money-saver compared to the price of a taxi or Uber.

Car Rentals

The car rental center is at the Miami Intermodal Center. Get the MIA Mover from the airport to the MIC. The MIA Mover is free of charge and signposted at Miami Airport. Once you arrive at the MIC, car rental agencies are easy to find.

Hotel Shuttle Buses

Check with your hotel if they offer a free shuttle bus ride from the airport. All hotel shuttle buses are now picking up passengers outside baggage claim areas. Look for your designated zone and check with the driver that you are on the right bus before climbing aboard.

Where to stay before your cruise from Miami

A stay in Miami means a beach vacation. And you have hundreds of good hotels to choose from. We have a list of tried and tested hotels in Miami and on Miami Beach that we recommend. Read on, then pick the one that suits you best.

Hotels close to Miami International Airport

Many cruise travelers want a place to stay at the airport. Especially if the flight arrives late at night or they have visited Miami before and are just interested in a place to stay before boarding the cruise ship the next day.

It is also an excellent way to stick to a tighter budget, as airport hotels are less expensive than those in the city.

Our recommendations for hotels close to the airport are:

  • E.B. Hotel Miami – An excellent option for a good quality hotel. There are free shuttles bus to and from the hotel, and the rooms are a good size, modern and comfortable. Try out the rooftop cafe with excellent views over the Miami skyline. The hotel does not offer a shuttle to the cruise port, but the friendly service team will book you a taxi; ask reception.
  • Comfort Inn Airport North – This basic hotel is just 5 minutes from the airport. Expect a comfortable bed, free wifi, and even breakfast included in your rate. The hotel also offers a complimentary shuttle from the airport to the cruise port. It is a good choice as a budget-friendly alternative. If you want to get to downtown or Miami Beach, an Uber ride will cost around $20.

Hotels in downtown Miami popular with cruise guests

Many guests like to stay downtown. If you are only in town for a few days, you want to fit in as much as possible, which means having the major shopping, restaurants, and sights on your doorstep.

We recommend either the Bayside area or the Brickell neighborhood.

Bayside also has some hotels located closest to the port, as there are no hotels in the port itself. It’s a lively spot on the water, with many restaurants at Bayside Marketplace.

Brickell is said to be one of the safer areas of downtown Miami with plenty of visiting tourists and many hotels on offer.

Popular hotels with cruise guests include:

  • InterContinental Miami
  • JW Marriott Marquis Miami
  • Kimpton Epic Hotel
  • Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton
  • Miami Marriott Biscayne Bay

Miami Beach hotels

The most popular hotels in Miami Beach for cruise guests are:

  • Kimpton Palomar South Beach
  • Fontainebleau Miami Beach
  • Pestana Miami Southbeach
  • The Palms Hotel & Spa
  • Loews Miami Beach
  • 1 Hotel South Beach
  • The Confidante Miami Beach
  • Hilton Cabana Miami Beach
  • The Betsy South Beach
  • Kimpton Surfcomber Hotel
  • The Shepley Hotel

How to get around the city

Uber and taxis work well anywhere in Miami but can be expensive.

There is a Miami Beach Trolley that visitors tend to forget about, but we can highly recommend it. It runs every day of the week. There are four loops to choose between to get you around. And best of all, it’s free of charge.

Three great ways to see the best of Miami before boarding your cruise ship

Two days in Miami will allow you to explore the city and still have a day to venture further afield with a rental car to visit, for example, Key Largo, Sawgrass Mills, or Everglades National Park.

Day 1: Downtown, Bayside, Biscayne Bay & Coconut Grove

Use Miami’s Trolleys to get around quickly in Miami and around Miami beaches – it’s free to ride!

Start by exploring downtown Miami and the adjoining Brickell neighborhood. You can also use the Metromover, a free elevated train ride.

This area has numerous art venues and museums, and the American Airlines Arena – now known as the FTX Arean – is home to Miami Heat. Book tickets before you arrive if you want to catch an NBA game.

Start with the shops at Brickell city center and make your way towards Bayside Marketplace. Ride the observation wheel here for fantastic panoramic views of Biscayne Bay.

Hop back on the trolley (for maps and schedule, visit the website here ) and head towards our favorite neighborhood, Coconut Grove. This stunning bayfront community has a farmer’s market, art galleries, restaurants, and shopping. Visit the Dinner Key Marina area and enjoy a walk around the bay.

Coconut Grove is home to the beautiful Vizcaya Museum and Gardens with its Mediterranean landscape and majestic mansion. Viator does some excellent guided tours here.

Day 2: Miami Beach, South Beach & shopping on Collins Avenue

Enjoy one of the world’s most famous beaches. Miami Beach is an island joined to the mainland of South Florida by bridges.

The Miami Beach boardwalk stretches 40 blocks, all the way from 5 to 46th Street. The best way to enjoy the boardwalk and get to know this wonderful area is by using the free Miami trolley or renting a bicycle. Start early and bike north to south, ending at South Beach.

Once in South Beach, we recommend having a tour of the Art Deco district with a knowledgeable local guide.

A guided tour takes you along Collins Avenue, Washington Avenue, and Ocean Drive between 5th and 23rd Street, where you’ll find most of the 800 art deco buildings. It is fascinating to hear the history and stories behind how this district became what it is today.

At the very least, visit the welcome center and the museum to learn about the styles of Art Deco. Lummus Park is an excellent place to sit and look at the Art Deco skyline. If you’re an art lover, you will see Miami in a new light.

After lunch, try authentic Cuban flavors at Havana Vieja South Beach. Enjoy the endless shopping along Collins Avenue, Lincoln Road, and Ocean Drive. Don’t forget to visit the Villa Casa Casuarina, fashion designer Gianni Versace’s home. This beautiful mansion is now a hotel and restaurant.

Options for dining and nightlife are endless. A few noteworthy venues include the Mango Tropical Cafe, LIV nightclub at Fontainebleau Hotel, and even their restaurant Scarpetta and Joe’s Stone Crab. For casual indoor and outdoor dining, head across the Rickenbacker Causeway to Key Biscayne and visit The Rusty Pelican.

Day 3: Key Largo or Everglades National Park

Rent a car and get out in nature. Choose to swim with dolphins in Key Largo or feed the alligators in the Everglades.

Key Largo – the first of the beautiful Florida Keys

Key Largo is just a one-hour drive from Miami and is the first in the long chain of islands making up the Florida Keys. A visit here is certainly doable in one day. Rent a car – numerous car rental offices are in Miami Beach or downtown Miami – and start early.

The drive itself is fantastic. You will quickly be a world away from the city, out into what feels like authentic island living.

There is a fabulous dolphin encounter program, nature trails, and water sports to enjoy. Snorkel the coral reefs or take a glass bottom boat tour at the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. You can even rent canoes or kayaks here. As you are driving on U.S. 1 to Key Largo, look for the entrance to the park at Mile Marker 102.5. Book your activity online here .

Everglades National Park – see alligators in their natural environment

When driving from Miami, the most accessible place to stop and experience an airboat ride in the Everglades is Gator Park along the Tamiami Trail.

We recommend that you purchase tickets before you leave home . Your ticket will include an entrance to the park, an airboat ride, and a wildlife show.

Alternatively, book a trip with shuttle bus transportation to visit the Everglades without renting a car and driving. There offer some great Air Boat tours, including transport to and from Miami.

The park has eateries, toilet facilities, and a souvenir shop. It is exposed and can get sweltering in the Florida sun. Remember to pack a backpack with sunscreen, a long-armed t-shirt, a hat, and a water bottle!

How to get to the Port of Miami

The Port of Miami is very close to downtown Miami and Miami Beach; however, you cannot walk there.

If your hotel does not offer a shuttle bus service for your cruise from Miami, we recommend a taxi or Uber. The ride will take around 20 minutes (assuming good traffic conditions).

It is the most convenient way to get to your cruise terminal, considering you also have your cruise packing and luggage to carry.

If you have opted to rent a car during your stay before your Miami cruise, note that there is no car rental station at the cruise port. Most big-name car rental companies such as Hertz, Enterprise, and Sixt have locations downtown, not that far from the port, and a free shuttle bus service to and from the port.

How can i find a cheap cruise.

Cheap cruise deals are fairly easy to find in most cases, and you can begin by considering what kind of features and itinerary you want. The more simplistic the experience is, the cheaper it is in general. On Expedia.com, you can filter for specific features and sort your results by price. By mixing and matching certain features, unforgettable experiences may be available with discount cruises. For example, booking a cruise with stunning restaurants and live performances while opting for an inside cabin without an ocean view window or balcony could be ideal for a traveler who doesn't plan on spending much time in their cabin anyways

The cheapest month to take a cruise varies based on your destination and the cruise line company that runs the ship. A Caribbean cruise , for example, is generally cheapest in the late summer and early fall since it's the local hurricane season.

Can I cancel my cruise booking?

Yes, you can cancel, but there may be fees for canceling depending on how far in advance you cancel and what kind of booking you have. You can check the specific cruise lines’ cancellation policies in your itinerary on Expedia.com.

Are river cruises worth the money?

River cruises are quite relaxing, with much more varied scenery than you'd experience on an ocean cruise. These ships often also feature several stops along the river, so passengers can enjoy a greater variety of destinations to explore. Viking river cruises are especially adept at providing this unforgettable experience.

What cruises are best for families?

The best family cruises in 2024 / 2025 tend to be Disney cruises with plenty of offerings for kids and adults alike, though MSC cruises are known for their iconic Children Cruise Free promotion. Disney cruises, specifically, are essentially a Disney theme park on a boat with live shows, rides, and attractions with your kids' favorite characters.

How much does a cruise ship cost?

Cruise prices can vary quite a bit, with cheap cruises and especially luxurious all-inclusive cruises available. Budget lines can offer cruise tickets as low as $50 per night in some cases, while the more high-end experiences can reach up to $1,000 per night and more.

What are some of the best cruise lines?

Several different cruise lines have a lot to offer, such as Viking cruises , which are known for traversing oceans and rivers with a style that blends outdoor and indoor splendor. Celebrity cruise line is more upscale with luxurious features like WiFi, included beverages, champagne, and suites with panoramic views. Other top cruise lines include Royal Caribbean International , Carnival Cruise , Disney Cruise , and Norwegian Cruise .

How far in advance do you need to book a cruise?

It's generally best to book a cruise about 6 to 12 months before your cruise departure. That's the safest way to balance availability and affordability. Technically, you can book earlier or later than that, with some last-minute cruise deals occasionally available up to a weekbefore cruise departure.

Are cruise trips affordable?

They can be, and it's especially simple to search for more affordable cruises with Expedia.com. Not only can you filter by cruise length, cruise line, and cabin experience, but you may also sort your results by price to put the more affordable options first on your search results page.

What is it like to go on a cruise?

A cruise is generally designed to offer the most relaxing experience possible. Despite the size of the ship, it's possible to feel the wave. Many passengers report that the movements help them sleep. Additionally, many fun cruises offer live stage performances, several restaurants, and shopping opportunities. When the ship is in international waters, you may even be able to enjoy a bit of tax-free shopping.

Are cruises a good way to travel?

Cruise travel is great if you're looking for some varied fun. Compared to a plane or a train, cruises have their own attractions and can be considered an integral part of cruise vacations. Plus, a cruise can hit several different destinations as well, with plenty of time to enjoy the cruise and scenic locales. It's certainly worth it for a unique experience no other method of travel can match.

Which cruise line is the cheapest?

The actual cheapest cruise available depends on a variety of different factors. Still, Carnival Cruise tends to be very affordable overall, most of the time with great options like the Carnival Sunrise and Carnival Horizon . Royal Caribbean is also another fantastic cruise line offering great deals if you are watching your budget.

What do I need to know when I book a cruise?

To book a cruise, you'll need to know where you'll be setting off from and where you'll be going, in addition to how many people will be with you and the features of the specific cruise you book. Keep in mind that you'll want to factor in spending money in your budget for the cruise's restaurants and shops in most cases.

Where should I go on a cruise in 2024 / 2025?

Plenty of incredible cruise destinations are accessible such as cruises to the Bahamas and cruises to Mexico . You may also be interested in cruises to Alaska or cruises to Europe for something outside of the Caribbean.

What countries are best to visit by cruise ship?

A lot of countries are accessible via a cruise, but the best include a cruise to Australia . However, a cruise to Australia is quite a long trip at sea and really allows you to take in everything the cruise ship has to offer.

Can I get last-minute cruise deals?

Yes, last-minute cruise deals are often available, and you can find them on Expedia.com by inputting your travel dates in your search and sorting your results by price. The deals will automatically be applied to the price estimates so that the cheapest estimates will show up first on your search results page.

Are cruises all-inclusive?

Cruises aren't always all-inclusive, but they can be. If you're interested in all-inclusive cruises, you can activate a search filter for it to ensure your search results only show cruises that meet your all-inclusive standard.

Is food free on a cruise?

Food is sometimes free on a cruise, but there are often specialty restaurants that aren't included with the general booking that you'll have to pay for separately. Check the details of each cruise before you book in the "What's included" section after clicking the cruise on your search results page.

What cruise lines are adults only?

Several lines offer adults-only cruise experiences, including Viking cruises , Carnival cruises , and Princess cruises . With an adults-only cruise, you can relax in a tranquil and laid-back setting without kids running around and enjoy all the cocktails you want.

What cruise lines are considered to be the most luxurious?

Viking cruises are considered exceptionally luxurious, with smaller ships and larger cabins that make them feel more exclusive, but Celebrity cruises offer luxury cruise lines too. Booking a luxury cruise means you can expect high-end amenities including gourmet restaurants, sizable suites, top-tier performances, massive pools, and much more.

What are the best cruises for couples?

Viking Cruises have much to offer for a more romantic experience. Holland America Line cruises can be quite refined and romantic as well, with an adult-oriented experience that's sophisticated rather than rowdy. Romantic cruises offer exceptional service as well as cozy suites for you and your partner to enjoy that's complemented by delicious food often themed around the cruise destination.

Why should I go on a cruise for my honeymoon?

Going on a cruise is a great way for you and your new spouse to be pampered with luxury while also being able to explore a new destination. Whether you're taking a cruise to Hawaii or a cruise to Bermuda , a particularly romantic experience is almost guaranteed thanks to the sheer number of things to do.

Are there any Christmas cruises?

Yes, quite a few cruise lines operate around Christmas, and you can find them easily by entering travel dates around Christmas into your 2024 cruise search. Some of the most popular Christmas cruises are available with Carnival and Disney.

Do I need a passport to go on a cruise?

Whether or not you need a passport depends on where you're going and the kind of cruise it is. Any US territory like Bermuda and Puerto Rico won't require a passport, of course, but you also don't need one if you're on a closed-loop cruise. This is a cruise that begins and ends at a US cruise terminal, even if there are stops in other countries on the way.

Why should I book a cruise with Expedia.com?

Booking a cruise with Expedia.com makes it easy to find a cruise type that works best for you. You can use the cruise finder and sort by cruise line, type, destination, length, and itinerary. One Key members also earn OneKeyCash on all eligible bookings that can be used to save on future eligible trips.

What happens if a cruise is canceled?

Every cruise has a different cancellation policy, but generally, passengers are entitled to either a full refund or a credit for a future cruise at a later date. Remember that they may automatically change your booking to their rescheduled date, so you may have to contact them if that date doesn't work for your schedule.
