Snorkel the Wrecks

One of australia's best snorkelling locations set amongst dramatic shipwrecks.

The Wrecks are home to a large variety of different species of reef fish, coral formations and marine life. The Snorkel Tour is a much safer experience as you are taken to the wrecks by boat - so there is no need to battle the currents and swim there yourself. This tour includes a guide and all snorkel equipment included (wetsuits, fins/flippers, mask, snorkel, life jacket, pool noodles and prescription masks).

  • Snorkel the Tangalooma Wrecks

Join the boat trip for a guided snorkelling tour of the Tangalooma Wrecks, with all gear included. The Wrecks are home to a myriad of different species of reef fish, coral formations and marine life. Minimum age for snorkel tour is 6 years old.

For your convenience we supply: Wetsuits, Fins, Mask, Snorkel, Life Jacket (if required), experienced guides, pool noodles, and prescription masks.

  • Adult $69 /Per Person Child $59 /Per Person
  • Intro to Snorkel Tour (Add On)

Intro to snorkelling is a 30-minute training session add-on that precedes the snorkel tour at the shipwreck. You can only book this training session in conjunction with a Wrecks Snorkel Tour - this is not a stand alone tour. This training will take place either at the swimming pool or in front of the water sports shallow area, provided the weather permits. It is specially designed for beginners, those who cannot swim, have never tried snorkelling before, or might feel anxious in the water during the snorkelling tour.

We conduct two intro snorkel tours daily, with scheduled times at 9:15 am and 12:30 pm. Guests are required to check-in at the water sports location 15 minutes before the tour begins.

During the training, our experienced guides will demonstrate the correct way to wear snorkelling equipment and the proper techniques for using them. Participants will also have the opportunity to practice these skills in the swimming pool. Additionally, our friendly staff will provide instructions on how to use life jackets, floating noodles, and life rings effectively during the snorkel tour at the shipwreck.

Further details about the snorkel route will be provided during the actual briefing for the snorkel tour.

Kayaking & Snorkelling on Moreton Island

Kayaking & snorkelling on moreton island – get wrecked.

We’ve got all the same crystal clear blue waters, stunning coral formations and countless varieties of fish that you’ll hear about from some of the other spots in Queensland, but what’s missing is the pain-in-the-backside travel, briefings, tourists and price tag! Oh, and Brissie’s only snorkelling shipwrecks are in Moreton Island. That’s not bad for a short trip from the city! 15 sunken shipwrecks amongst colourful fish and marine life create an amazing snorkelling site. Brisbane’s only shipwrecked snorkelling site will blow your mind – it’s a must do experience!

Snorkelling gear – you can BYO gear for snorkelling or otherwise as long as you’re within the luggage limits, and if you’re bringing a kayak this needs to be booked in with your passenger tickets or you could save the hassle and just hire one on the beach with Sunset Safaris! Meet our local wildlife:

sea turtle

Green Sea Turtles

Moreton Island is home to 5 different species of Sea Turtles and while snorkelling the wrecks it’s not uncommon to come across one going about their day. Sea Turtles often nest on the same beaches they were born on and the temperature of the sand is what determines the sex of the turtle. Moreton Islands cool sands mean that male turtles are more likely to hatch than females.

wobbegong shark

Wobbegong Sharks

Reading the word shark probably sounds intimidating however the Wobbegong Sharks that inhabit the wrecks are harmless. These bottom-dwelling sharks spend most of their time on the sea floor eating crabs and other smaller fish. The name “Wobbegong” comes from the “Australian-Aboriginal” language meaning “shaggy beard” which refers to the many growths on the bottom of it’s mouth.

Ratings & Reviews

Your experience.

Begin your day with a luxury cruise across Moreton Bay towards Moreton Island. Upon arrival, board a 4WD and drive on to the beach. As the world's third-largest sand island (98% of it is a protected National Park), Moreton Island has no sealed roads - you can only travel via 4WD. Take the middle road and go through the rich eucalypt forest, home to stunning 250-year-old Xanthorrhoea (grass trees). Once you reach the desert, it's time for a dose of sandboarding and tobogganing. This high-speed, high-adrenaline activity can take you to speeds of up to 50km/h. Don't forget to bring your camera!

Later, your guide will prepare a fresh picnic lunch for you as you take a moment to relax on the white sandy beach. Enjoy a swim or a walk, or take some time out to sunbake. After lunch, go on a guided snorkel around the Tangalooma Shipwrecks. There are 15 shipwrecks located just 50m off the beach, and they are home to one of Queensland’s most diverse marine ecosystems. Spend your time here spotting marine life like butter bream, blue-tang surgeonfish (Dory), and clownfish (Nemo)! You can also choose to go kayaking with the guide around these iconic wrecks.

Tangalooma Island Resort Review - Feature Photo

Engage in friendly beach volleyball or cricket matches with loved ones, or simply unwind and soak up the beach vibes.

This exciting trip guarantees a day of fun, relaxation, and cherished memories.

The activity was stellar! They provide transportation to and from the island, as well as 3 hours of kayaking, 3 hours of snorkeling equipment (you can rent a wetsuit for an extra $10) , and 1 hour of stand up paddle boarding! 7 hours worth of activities! The snorkeling is amazing with the wrecks and reefs that have since grown on them. The experience is self guided (except the boat ride, obviously), which we really liked, but it is something to keep in mind. If you are looking for an experience with a guide, this one is not for you. Or you will have to pay extra when you get to the island to have a guide (tour operators) lead you. A Exceptionally good day started off with a very pleasant boat trip to the island. Well organised and friendly staff. Once we got to the island, we were made to feel welcome as daytrippers. The snorkelling, the Tangalooma Shipwrecks was awesome. We chose the quad bike riding which was great fun and stayed for dinner, which was very nice and reasonably priced. Then we watched the dolphin feeding and caught the last ferry back. Would definitely recommend this trip we would go again and quite possibly would stay a few nights at Tangalooma resort. The ATV riding was fun! We had 2 adults and 2 kids (ages 10 & 13) and our guide split us off from the rest of the group so we didn’t slow the others down but we could still enjoy the ride. She was very patient as my kids learned how to operate the ATVs and let us ride a bit longer. When you arrive at the ferry terminal they give you specific instructions to proceed to the resort desk to receive your tickets with a time to get to the ATV activity. Yes, Moreton Island has day trips and cruises. You can enjoy the beach without having to face much traffic and switch to cruise mode on a return day cruise to Tangalooma Island Resort, situated at the Island.

Moreton Island tours start at AU$119.

It is ideal to have a car to travel on Moreton Island. Since it is mostly a National Park, you do require a vehicle access permit to drive on the island, even if you are just driving your way to the resort.

Generally, there are no lifeguards patrolling around Moreton Island. It is important to be cautious while swimming or surfing as strong currents are witnessed around the Tangalooma Wrecks. Also, never swim alone!

Moreton Island has a number of places where you can pick things from if you have forgotten to carry something during your trip.

A lot of people can be spotted frolicking on the bay side of Moreton. While you can enjoy a number of activities like snorkeling, dolphin feeding etc., the sharks can be seldom seen at Moreton Island but tend to remain in deeper water.

Ensure you treat the water before drinking. There is fresh water available at Big Sandhills (western beach), Rous Battery (eastern beach), Eagers Beach (eastern beach), at the established campgrounds.
