It takes three to four hours to complete a Mt. Pinatubo tour (one-way). It includes a 4×4 ride across the lahar field for one hour, and a trek to the crater lake for about two hours, depending on your pace.

Overall, you need to spend an entire day to finish your Mt. Pinatubo tour from Manila. Please see sample itinerary below so you have an idea on how long it takes to actually complete a Mt. Pinatubo tour.

Sample Mount Pinatubo itinerary

3am – Depart from Manila 5.30am – Arrival at the base of the 4×4 ride 6am – Start of 4×4 ride 7.30am – Arrival at the foot of Mt. Pinatubo and start of trek 10.30 – Arrival at the crater lake 11am – Lunch break 12.30pm – Start of descent 2pm – Aeta Village (if time permits) 3pm – Ride the 4×4 back to the base 5pm – Clean self and cool down 6pm – Depart for Manila 9pm – Arrival in Manila

Our Mount Pinatubo experience

When we arrived at the base camp, we took a quick breakfast and attended a brief orientation before commencing our official Mount Pinatubo tour.

After the orientation, we then hopped on our assigned 4×4 vehicles and traveled across the expansive Pinatubo lahar field, which is considered one of the largest lahar fields in the world.

The scenery looked like it came straight out of a painting. Don’t you think?

We endured an hour of dust and bumps, and finally reached the foot of Mt. Pinatubo where we started our two-hour trek to the crater lake.

We made a quick stop at the Aeta Village to meet and greet the indigenous Filipinos who inhabit the mountains of Zambales and other parts of Luzon.

We treaded on steep, rocky paths.

And crossed small rivers and waterways.

Finally, we reached the crater lake after a strenuous two-hour hike. Look at that breathtaking view!

Of course, a photo op here is a must! We also had our lunch and stayed for a bit for more sightseeing.

For safety reasons, swimming and boating at the Pinatubo crater lake are prohibited.

Time to go home

Then, it was time to descend. We made a few stops to rest and recover. We reached the foot of Mount Pinatubo mid afternoon and hopped on the 4×4 ride again to go back to the base camp.

We had to go through another hour of rough road until reaching the base camp where we cleaned ourselves, changed clothes, and cooled down before heading back to Manila.

We survived and arrived safe and sound!

Is Mt. Pinatubo easy to climb?

Yes, it is relatively easy to climb Mt. Pinatubo even for beginners like us. However, this hiking activity is not recommended for those with serious medical conditions, pregnant women, PWDs, and even young children.

The lahar field is really dusty which could trigger any respiratory problems like asthma and allergic rhinitis. The long hours of trekking on rocky and slippery slopes could also be a challenge to young children, pregnant women, PWDs, and those with cardiovascular problems.

While Mt. Pinatubo is beginner-friendly, it is definitely not family-friendly. So, you should consider all these when attempting to climb Mount Pinatubo.

Travel tips

• As it is an outdoor activity, it is best to wear an outfit good for hiking such as dri-fits, shirts, shorts, leggings, and trekking shoes.
• Wear face masks to prevent yourself from inhaling the lahar particles.
• Put on sunscreen to protect your face and skin from the sun.
• Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the dust.
• Bring some trail food and water to stay hydrated.
• Bring some toiletries so you can clean yourself after the hike.
• Bring a towel and extra clothes so you can change after.
• You’ll be crossing some mini rivers, so you can bring waterproof bags and waterproof phone pouches if you wish.
• Listen to the orientation before the hike and follow the health and safety protocols.
• Follow your tour guide and never veer too far away from your group.
• As the signage says, “Take nothing but pictures. Leave nothing but footprints.”

If you are physically fit with no serious medical condition, we’d say go for it! The feeling of conquering this beauty of a disaster is incomparable and truly one for the books.

Mount Pinatubo is one of the most picturesque volcanoes in the Philippines . With that said, it has also one of the more popular volcano crater lakes in the country. Hiking to these nature’s work-of-art is very tiring but the destination is surprising. You would have that feeling of reconnection with nature once you set foot on Mount Pinatubo’s viewing deck.

The view deck, which is the more popular sights going to the volcano’s crater, has quite a view of Mount Pinatubo’s landscape. All the exasperation during the climb will be wiped out once you see the crater lake itself.

Mount Pinatubo erupted violently on June 15, 1991, making it the second largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century after Mount Novarupta in Alaska. With its iconic and sudden eruption, a sudden splurge of lahar and volcanic ash were spewed.

Things I love about the Mount Pinatubo Adventure

Mount Pinatubo is an unusual tourist destination to visit, but you might as well consider this whenever visiting Botolan, Zambales. Mount Pinatubo is my 5th summit for 2017. Here, I jotted down some of the things I loved during the visit.

1. Early registration

Registration starts, I think, at around 5 or 6 in the morning and end at around 7 a.m. The registration is closing early so as to regulate the number of people going in and out of Mount Pinatubo. This is also to give equal chances to the locals to handle every tourist group that will be assigned to them.

Every group is allowed with a maximum of 5. This is to ensure comfort when riding the 4×4. The guide assigned to you will accompany to the drop off point in Botolan, Zambales for another registration before starting the hike going to Mount Pinatubo’s crater.

The earlier you go, the better. It is because the sun is not yet out and you get to enjoy the cool breeze in Mount Pinatubo. Worry not as there are small eateries, stores, and bathing stations in the vicinity of the Municipal Tourism Office of Capas (in Tarlac).

You will then be escorted by another guide when you hike the 3 Kilometer stretch of rocks and rivers going to Pinatubo. There is also a store at the registration area if you wish to have refreshments and souvenirs from the trip. The hike will last around 1 to 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on your group’s pacing. Upon reaching the 2 Kilometer mark, this is what you will see:

Buy trail food and drinks before going to the registration site. Food and beverages in the area are quite expensive.

2. 4×4 experience

The 4×4 experience is a first for me. It is the first time I rode on such going to the foot of Mount Pinatubo. Given Capas’ route’s terrain is rocky and rugged, riding a 4×4 is mandatory. The ride from Capas Sattelite Municipal Tourism Office to Botolan jump off is around 1 to 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on weather conditions.

You will get to cross rivers, etched mountains, grazing lands for bovine animals, and big boulders. Don’t worry as the drivers are experienced enough to handle such rugged nature of the terrain. It is also part of the adventure ! Yeah!

3. Meet and know more about the locals

Upon reaching the jump off point in Botolan, Zambales, we met a handful of Aetas in the vicinity. They are the ones overseeing the place and they actually live in the outskirts of the mountains.

If you want to organize an outreach program for the locals in different sitios, coordinate with the Botolan Municipal Tourism Office (at the second registration area) or ask your tour guide on how you can reach the sitios located within Mount Pinatubo.

4. Nature trip at one of its best

We labeled it as a “beautiful disaster” because of the prized view you get to see upon reaching Mount Pinatubo’s crater. Along the trip, especially on the hike part, you will get closer to nature. Different terrains with different stories to tell, the hike is one of the must-be-experienced in visiting Mount Pinatubo.

Once getting to the main viewpoint of Pinatubo’s crater, you will get an 180° view of it. You will never run out of good angles to take a photo of it. It is like a huge mural painting when captured by a high-end camera.

There are two ways going to Mount Pinatubo’s crater. The easier one is via Capas and the harder one is through Porac.

a) Capas, Tarlac route

The Capas route is the most usual route in going to Pinatubo. This is where you get to ride 4x4s, get to see the Aeta Community up close and have an easy hike up to the main viewpoint. All in all, it may take you 3 to 4 hours before getting to see the crater.

b) Porac, Pampanga route

Also known as the “Delta 5” route, the way through Porac is quite challenging. A rigorous hike awaits the ones who would traverse this route. It may also take you around 4 hours to see the crater. It also offers a different viewpoint of Mount Pinatubo’s crater.

Mt. Pinatubo Day Trip Experience: What to Expect

My seemingly unending proverbial list of places in the Philippines to see before I die include hiking into volcanoes. It started when we went on a hike in Taal volcano, an active one that erupted just this 2020 (now closed) and told myself I should venture more into such. It’s more than just the thrill of being at the edge of a volcano’s caldera. As a true sucker for earth sciences and adventure, the awe-striking scene that the nature has formed and the fun in getting there got me drawn into it. Since then, I have set my eyes and intentions into meeting Mt. Pinatubo. So, if you’re also looking forward to witnessing this beautiful disaster with your own eyes too, here’s what you need to know and what to expect on a Mt. Pinatubo day trip!

About Mt. Pinatubo

Mt. Pinatubo , tucked in the mountain ranges in Botolan, Zambales , boasts a rich and tumultuous history. This stratovolcano remained dormant for about six centuries. However, on June 15, 1991, Pinatubo violently awakened with a cataclysmic eruption, considered as the second most powerful in the Twentieth century. The eruption expelled about 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide and other volcanic debris affecting not only the local landscape but also causing a decrease in the global temperature for about two years. The devastating event led to the formation of a massive caldera and the collapse of the volcano’s summit. Prior to its eruption, Mount Pinatubo was relatively unknown, but its catastrophic awakening left an indelible mark on both geological records and the collective memory of those who witnessed or experienced the disaster it has brought.

Presently, this dubbed as ‘beautiful disaster’, has become a tourist hotspot in the province.

Best Time to Visit Mt. Pinatubo

The best time to visit Mt. Pinatubo is during the dry season in the country (March, April to first few weeks of May) . It is also relatively the best time to go there around January to February . In these months, a more stunning crater lake under a clear blue sky would welcome you after your long journey. However, expect it to be crowded.

Mt. Pinatubo Day Trip with Abraham Tours

Pre-travel: from the hostel.

We booked our Mt. Pinatubo trip with Abraham Tours Manila . The trip includes the transportation from Makati to Capas v.v., entrance fees, and local guide fees. Food and drinks are excluded in this fee, hence, it’s necessary to grab some prior to the trip. Their Pinatubo Day Trip is available on Mondays , Wednesdays and Saturdays .

Since it starts at 2:45 AM and we’re coming all the way from the south, we decided to stay in their hostel located in Poblacion, Makati City the night before. It’s actually quite a good decision as we were well-rested before the trip. The hostel seems relatively new, somewhat giving off a hippie vibe yet ultimately comfortable. It offers both dorm-style accommodations and private rooms with en-suite bathrooms and we stayed in the latter.

Before 2:45 AM, we all gathered by the lobby where Paul, our tour coordinator gave us a brief orientation regarding the trip. Right after, we just grabbed some snacks and off we departed for our adventure for the day. I must say, they are very punctual!

We comfortably settled in the van indulging into more sleep as we drive for more or less three hours to Capas, Tarlac — the jump off to the easier trail to Mt. Pinatubo’s crater lake. At around 5:30, we arrived at Allan Bognot’s Accommodation where we were oriented formally about the trek and waited for our 4×4 ride.

The 4×4 Ride

The adventure commenced with a 4×4 ride. Each 4×4 ride can carry up to three (3) guests, a local guide and a driver . Before all the fun, we dropped by Capas Tourism Office first to register and sign the waiver.

The journey lasted over an hour and a half or so, yet time seemed to elude us completely as we drive through the scenic, lunar-like route bathed in the glow of sunrise. We had to go through dusty, muddy trails with occasional water splashes that got us and our stuff soiled early on. We made a stop at the so-called ‘ Toblerone ‘ — a series of towering heaps of volcanic ashes resembling the Toblerone chocolate bar. It’s also where you can meet and greet some members of the Aeta community in Capas. We took a few snaps of the surreal, picturesque scene then off we went again to the jump off.

After a while, we arrived at wide open space locally known as quadra where the 4×4 adventure ends — where our ride parks. The trek from the Capas jump off towards the volcano’s crater lake is beginner friendly. It is some 3 to 7-Kilometer walk on a rugged terrain of various scenes featuring streams and river crossing, rocky paths, ash-laden trails, showcasing the remnants of the volcano’s historic eruption. The final stretch rewards adventurers with the breathtaking sight of the stunning crater lake nestled within the heart of the volcanic caldera, its azure waters contrasting against the rugged, volcanic surroundings.

The last stretch of the trek left us breathless in both the literal and figurative sense. We found ourselves climbing the concrete stairs under the heat of the sun. The view awaiting us at the summit was the most gratifying sight of the day — the mesmerizing Mt. Pinatubo Crater Lake. Anticipating a weekend visit, we had braced ourselves for crowds. I did not expect it to be THAT crowded. To our astonishment, it turned out to be one of the most densely populated locations I’ve ever encountered. Since we arrived at midday, several groups have found their spot and settled under the tree to savor their lunch, famished probably due to the long trek. Good thing, it was cloudy so we sat wherever.

Regardless, we still enjoyed the view at the crater lake. It was immaculate, tranquil and even surreal. The ash-laden sides of the caldera made it look like ranges covered with snow from afar.

02:45 – Departure 03:15 – Jollibee Shell Edsa Balintawak pick-up 05:30 – Arriving at Pinatubo Capas entry, fill up forms waivers 06:00 – Start the 4×4 drive 07:30 – Hike to the volcano’s crater and back 11:00 – Arrive at the crater, lunch 12:00 – Hike back down 14:30 – Arrive back in the jeeps 16:00 – Back in the tourism office 18:30 – Start the drive back 21:00 – Estimated time of arrival at Abraham Manila

Mt. Pinatubo Day Trip Practical Tips

• Visit Mt. Pinatubo on non-peak season (i.e. weekdays) to avoid the crowd.
• Wear comfortable trekking clothes and footwear. You’ll also be crossing several rivers and streams.
• Secure your stuff in a dry bag to protect your valuables especially your gadgets from getting soaked and soiled.
• Expect getting caught in dust and mud so bring extra set of [changing] clothes.
• Bring enough trail snack and drinking water in a reusable bottle.
• Bring cash especially you think of getting snacks at the Crater Lake. Expect instant goods only.
• Expect being exposed to sun on your way back to the jump off. Hence, bring sunscreen, hat or anything that would protect you from such element.
• Pack a poncho. The weather in the area has a tendency to be unpredictable.

Mount Pinatubo Day Trip

Literally one of the biggest attractions around Angeles City in Pampanga, Philippines, a day trip to Mount Pinatubo traces the second largest volcanic eruption in the 20th century, and ends at the beautiful crater lake of Mount Pinatubo, a stark contrast to the trail of destruction it left it the mammoth eruption in 1991. After lots of sand and sea in Coron , time for the mountains!

About Mount Pinatubo

Mount Pinatubo is an active volcano near Angeles City in Philippines. It last erupted in 1991 with devastating effect, changing the landscape and climate forever, with long lasting economic and social impact. Today it is a popular tourist destination, with a typical itinerary consisting of an hour long jeep ride through wide open valleys scarred by its lahar flows before a 2 hour (each way) hike towards the crater lake of Mount Pinatubo.

Do I need to book a tour for Mount Pinatubo/ Can I visit Mount Pinatubo without a tour

It is possible to visit Mount Pinatubo without a tour. First you’ll need to head to the Santa Juliana Capas Tarlac Tourism Office. From there the rest is managed by the local tourism office. You’ll be required to pay for the local guide (500 PHP) and 4×4 service (3000 PHP) to the start of the hike. It’s possible to share the guide and transport service with up to 5 people, and merging with different groups is allowed. There is an additional 300 PHP per person environmental fee. This was what I could find on the internet and may be subject to changes. During off peak season (July to October) it may be more tricky to form a group.

Alternatively, you can book through a tour agency. They’ll cost more, but comes with a packed lunch and they can help to form groups if possible to lower the cost. Further, timings when Mount Pinatubo are sometimes affected by military training so an agency may be able to advise on the conditions. Some only sell by full jeeps (regardless of number of people), while some sell by number of passengers and will make more sense to people on a budget.

To be honest after completing the tour I don’t think there is much benefit of pre-booking a tour, but being the first time and being alone it was nice being provided with detailed directions and having someone to check with for more information. Either way the jeep and guide are staff of the tourism office and not the agency.

Majestic Mount Pinatubo Tour

Just to make sure there’d be no hiccups I booked through Majestic Mount Pinatubo Tour . Prices are higher in July to October, and there seems to be no weekend rates too. I paid 2,450 PHP basically for them settling the arrangements and lunch. Prices may differ depending on expected number of tourists. During weekends on peak season it seems the price may go down to 1,650 PHP excluding lunch. These prices do not include transport from Clark/ Angeles/ Manila. They offer transfers from the cities too. It’ll be better to just drop them a message on Facebook or Whatsapp for updated prices as their prices vary with the number of expected visitors on the day. I paid a deposit of 1500 PHP in Angeles City at Cebuana Lhuillier, and the remainder in cash on that day. For a payment of 1500 PHP there was a transaction fee of 80 PHP.

Getting to Santa Juliana Capas Tarlac Tourism Office from Angeles City

First you’d need to get to Dau Bus Terminal around 4am. Jeepneys may be running at that time, or you can take a Grab ride to the bus terminal. If you are taking Grab, book the trip on your own and do not let hotel staff do it for you. A Grab driver told me how he had picked up guests who paid 500 PHP to the hotel staff for a 150 PHP ride. Another note if you’re taking Grab in Angeles City is to start booking earlier, as sometimes it can take very long to find a ride especially in the wee hours.

From Dau Bus Terminal you’ll need to take a bus that’ll pass by the McDonalds at Capas. Waiting for the right bus may take awhile. These include buses to Baguio, Dagupan or Urdaneta. Check with the driver or terminal staff which of the buses will pass by the McDonalds at Capas. Let the driver know to drop you off at the McDonalds. The bus ride took about 30 minutes and I paid 50 PHP for it.

Right after you alight, tricycle riders will approach. Let them know you intend to get to the Santa Juliana Tourism Office/ Mount Pinatubo jump off (Google Maps: 8CHJ+PM Capas, Tarlac, Philippines), and confirm that the price is not more than 300 PHP. This took about 30-40 mins.

Most tours start around 6am, and the cut off for jeeps leaving towards Mount Pinatubo seems to be at 10am, but you’ll probably not want to leave so late as it may be hot.

After some waiting for the paperwork and for other guests to arrive, the jeep and guide were ready. We had 5 tourists, the guide and the driver on board. It was a bit of a squeeze. Within minutes we were crossing shallow rivers in the jeep and driving across the wide open valley where lahar once flowed.

The landscape gradually turned more rocky, barren and mud covered.

Somewhere along the way the driver stopped for us to take pictures. There were some beggars approaching tourists there. There were also some kids who didn’t really bother tourists.

Moving further in, the wide valleys narrowed and the walls seem to close in.

We got closer to the mud walls. The stream crossings also seemed to get more intense and some water got in.

After the most intense final stretch the jeep stopped. That was as far as the jeep would go as the terrain ahead was even rougher. The ride from the tourism office to the start point of the hike took about an hour. There were a few jeeps already parked there but less than half of what was to come that day.

Very quickly we got right into the action with a couple of stream crossings. The guide picked the safer paths to cross as helped us across the crossings. While some were deeper or faster flowing it was generally possible to keep dry with steady footing, as there were usually rocks jutting out.

It was a little scary walking through the deep narrow valley imagining how massive amounts of lahar once flowed through these channels.

After about half an hour we passed the first checkpoint, where there’s a drinks stall and a basic toilet.

After the first checkpoint the hills were greener and climb was a little steeper.

And another half an hour after the first checkpoint is the second one, where there are shelters and basic toilets.

Beyond the second checkpoint, the crater lake is near. This was where vegetation got much denser and the climb a little bit steeper again.

When you reach the stairs, you’re almost there!

Half an hour after leaving the second stop, or about 2 hours from the start, the crater lake of Mount Pinatubo!

Unfortunately it was really cloudy that day, and the crater rim was obscured. Still a very beautiful spot with that water, clouds and mountains.

Our guide found a spot for us to sit around and have lunch by the view of the lake. Over lunch the clouds cleared a tiny bit, just for a little while.

Hiking back to the start point

We spent about an hour at the lake, enough time to enjoy the peacefulness in between groups arriving at the lake. Then it was back all the way to the start. Fortunately the sky was clearing up. That also meant it was getting warmer.

It was a different experience walking out with slightly clear skies, compared to the overcast one that morning.

Back at Santa Juliana, one of the guests on the tour had hired van transport. The driver offered to get me back to Angeles City for a fee if the other guests were fine. The price started high but we eventually settled for 200 PHP. Slightly cheaper than what I would have paid going by tricycle + bus but probably a bit faster. The ride back took longer than the morning though, with heavier traffic.

How much did it cost to hike Mount Pinatubo

Here’s what I paid for my entire day trip from Angeles City:

• Grab ride to Dau Bus Terminal: 221 PHP
• Bus to Capas McDonalds: 50 PHP
• Tricycle ride to Santa Juliana Tourism Office: 300 PHP
• Tour in shared jeep, including lunch (Majestic Mount Pinatubo Tours): 2,450 PHP (should be cheaper outside Jul-Oct period)
• Fee for transfer of 1,500 PHP deposit (Cebuana Lhuillier): 80 PHP
• Shared van back to Angeles city: 200 PHP (don’t count on this though)
• Jeepney back to hotel: 11 PHP
• Total: 3,312 PHP (~USD64 / SGD88)

Final thoughts

If you’re in Angeles City, or in Manila with an extra day, a Mount Pinatubo day trip is definitely worth a visit. A vast contrast to the packed cities and idyllic islands Philippines is more well known for. The walk to the crater lake is beautiful and pretty manageable, and the jeep ride to the start point is an experience on its own. The jumping-off point for the climb up Mt Pinatubo is the village of Santa Juliana, from where you take a memorable 4WD journey across an eerie, lunar-like landscape involving action-packed river crossings before arriving at the trailhead. From here it's a relatively easy 45-minute walk up to Pinatubo's crater, with its tranquil lake and sandy beach. Swimming in the crater lake was prohibited at time of research, but this may be relaxed in the future.

The easily eroded lahar flows have created a stunning landscape around the volcano that is gradually recovering some of its vegetation. The Abacan and Pasig-Potrero Rivers have both cut channels through the sediment, which has led to the formation of towering pinnacles of lahar, hanging valleys and canyons.

Other than the sweaty, steep climb towards the end, it's a largely nontaxing trek, though be prepared: your feet may get wet when navigating small river crossings. Pack plenty of water, a hat and sunscreen.

This shared Mount Pinatubo day tour is a great experience for beginner climbers as Pinatubo has well-established trails that are generally easy to follow. The tour also comes with transfers from Manila, fees, permits, an event bag tag, and the service of a guide throughout the entire climb. Please note that this shared tour needs a minimum of four people to push through.

You have three options for the pick-up location: SM Mall of Asia in Pasay, Greenfield District in Mandaluyong, or Wendy's Quezon Avenue in Quezon City. Please note that each location has a different pick-up time, so make sure to choose the one that best fits your schedule. You can stop here to take a few photos as well. Then when you reach the mountain, you'll begin the ascent to the Mount Pinatubo crater lake. The climb usually lasts around an hour or two but will differ depending on your pace. Your estimated time of arrival at the crater lake is 9:30 AM

Once you reach the entrance to the lake, you'll be rewarded with a view of the majestic caldera set against alpine-like rock formations. Feel free to rest here and take photos of the beautiful scenery after your climb. You can also enjoy lunch at your own expense here before preparing to return to the base of the mountain. After your descent, you'll take the 4x4 jeep back to the jump-off point. At around 4 PM, you'll head back to Manila. You can have dinner at your own expense along the way. Your estimated time of arrival in the city is 8 PM.

MOUNT PINATUBO: The Hike With A Story

The Philippines is usually dubbed as the pearl of the orient, because of its resplendent coastlines and majestic seas, but behind that splendor, it is also the home of one of the most catastrophic volcanic eruptions in the history of Asia – most commonly known as The Devastation of Mount Pinatubo.

June 12, 1991, a year before I was born, Mount Pinatubo is to be recorded as one of the largest volcanic eruptions of the century, resulting in huge avalanches, and gas-charged magma emulsions. Years before the said eruption, the volcano seemed like it is destined for eternal slumber, with very minimal signs of volcanic activity. So imagine how petrified I was when I finally decided to go there. What if it suddenly erupts while I was there? Well, PHIVOLCS or The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology have been keeping a close monitor of the Sleeping Mountain after that dreadful day, so do not worry – it’s perfectly safe.

HOW TO GET THERE

To be honest, this trip was pre-arranged by an acquaintance, so I can’t really give you which agency she went to, but I can give you an assessment of what I can remember. If you are coming from Manila, travel time is approximately 2-3 hours depending on traffic. You can also go there via public transport- although we opted to go with a private van, costing us about Php 1,600 each, which should include other expenses like the 4×4 rent (Php 3,000 for 5 people, guide fee Php 500 and environmental fee Php 300). Also, be sure to have your breakfast before you go there because looking for an area to eat can be quite a challenge, especially if you’re not into Filipino Food.

Upon arrival at the checkpoint area of Mount Pinatubo, via bus, van or any other means of transportation, you will be greeted by a safety officer. The Safety officer will explain the do’s and don’ts during the hike, and what you should watch for. Be very attentive on this one, because you are first and foremost entering the lair of a LIVE volcano, so be smart. There will be kids offering you support to stick for your hike, but, this is definitely not necessary. The hike is not that difficult and there is no need for additional support, so do not waste a single penny over this . Another thing you should remember is: To check the weather a day before , because the road can be extra slippery when wet, and the fog can cover the view at the peak. Fortunately for us, the rain subsided the moment we reach our hike destination. Also, in case I haven’t mentioned before, please keep in mind to wear proper HIKING SHOES , or really stable slippers (not those wedgies), or else they will not allow you to hike at all.

You will be required to ride a 4×4 for one hour, to go all the way to the start of the hiking trail. The reason for that is, the Mountain is massive, and you will have to pass through all the areas affected during the last eruption, so the road can be a little rough. You will see seismic rocks and sulfur emissions flowing from one stream to another. I know this will sound cliche, but after seeing the wonderful landscapes created by the eruption, all I could think about was: “sometimes bad things happen before good things can.”

The hike itself is really easy (yes that is coming from someone who struggled to hike at Mount Taal) so, no need for that pre-hike extensive exercise. There are no insane rocks or mountain climbing like my hike at The Peak in Squamish, Canada. This is easy-peasy and all you have to do is to enjoy the scenery. In case it gets a bit too hot or steamy, it’s handy to have a set of cloth to cover your mouth, accompanied by constant water intake. You will also have a chance encounter with some of the locals or ethnics who have made a living around the area (like farmers), and it can be a bit rare to see them anywhere else. To get a glimpse of what I am talking about, check out these photos:

As I’ve mentioned, it was a bit rainy when we arrived there so the fog covered the mountains and the rest of landscapes, almost making it impossible to see anything. Fortunately, the rain subsided a few minutes in, and the view started to marvelously unravel itself. The mix of blue and green, along with fresh soothing breeze makes the entire scene captivating. To give yourself a bit of an edgy overview, there is a great photo area right by the stairs. This should be able to cover the entire look of the place, although it would probably be filled with other tourists.

Mt. Pinatubo Trek Tour

• The Pinatubo trek is a thrilling adventure that takes you to the majestic crater lake of an active volcano, surrounded by stunning rock formations and lahar canyons.

TERMS & CONDITIONS:

• Jump off-site to Pinatubo crater is the crow valley which is a part of the military exercise ground. Latecomers will not be allowed entry once the military closes the gate.
• The earliest arrival back to basecamp is around 2:30 pm and if there are delays due to the exercise, the next or latest arrival from the hike is between 4:00 and 5:30 pm. Always anticipate that the tour will end at 5:00 pm.
• Mt Pinatubo trekking is also weather-dependent. During the rainy season, the advisory will be based on the report of the Pinatubo rangers living near the crater via VHF radios (early morning). So, it is possible the trek can be canceled even if you are already at the jump-off point.
• From the jump-off site to the crater is about 22 km. To date, the first 15kms are via a 4×4 jeep (1.5hrs ride) which is bumpy & dusty with river beds crossing. The last 7kms is the hike proper (2 hours or more depending on your pace).
• A 4×4 jeep may malfunction or break down which is common due to trail conditions and vehicles of those vintage types. So be patient if this situation happens.
• The majority types of trail guides are locals or from tribal groups. They are mostly non-English speaking guides but knowledgeable about the trails. Avoid asking a lot of questions otherwise the trail guide tends to walk a few meters ahead.
• No restrooms along the way. You can bring/buy a walking stick at the jump-off site that can stabilize you when you hike.
• During the hike, check if rocks and sand will not collapse especially during river bed crossing. The hike is not a marathon, be extra careful and take your own pace.
• Swimming is prohibited in case the stairs leading down to the crater lake are open. violators will be fined Php 15,000 per person. the guests can only touch the water or sit along the crater wall.
• The Pinatubo tour is non-refundable even if you did not make it to the crater due to the Military exercise. Do not spoil your day with things that are not within anyone’s control.

3:30AM pickup from Manila

First, settle in for 2.5 hour drive from Manila to Sta. Juliana, Capas Tarlac. Eat the breakfast you brought along before arriving at the site.

After a safety briefing, join the passengers for the 4×4 and follow your guide along a bumpy route and for about 1.5 hours you’ll make your way over the volcanic terrain until arriving at the base of the volcano.

Disembark your vehicle for a guided trek to Mt Pinatubo Crater, starting down a lahar slope and then climbing into the forest. During the approximate 1.5 to 2-hour hike, your guide points out valley streams, volcanic rocks and other natural features in the landscape. Finally, climb a stairway to the viewing deck to peer at the shimmering, gemstone-like green waters of the Crater Lake from afar — swimming is prohibited.

Explore the region before starting your 1.5-hour trek back. When you reach the area where your 4×4 is parked, climb aboard for the rugged ride back to base camp.

Replenish with lunch at Bognot’s Homestay. You’re free to take a shower here before your return drive to Eco Resort.

Mt. Pinatubo Day Trek

One of the fast rising tourist destinations in Central Luzon is the Mt. Pinatubo, the infamous volcano that had its catastrophic eruption in 1991 after centuries of dormancy. Its eruption was considered as the biggest and most destructive volcanic eruption in the recent years.  It claimed hundreds of lives, displaced thousands of families, destroyed billions worth of crops and unknown to many, brought down the world temperature by a few centigrade.

Years after its tragic past, the volcano is slowly becoming a popular tourist spot, attracting many local and foreign tourists, myself included.

A day trek to Mt. Pinatubo was actually a great way to start my travel year 2009. Together with the Travel Factor guys, I braved one cold Sunday morning of January to trek the volcano. We left Manila around 3 in the morning and headed to Tourism Office in Barangay Sta. Juliana, Capaz, Tarlac, where we rode the 4×4 jeep via the skyway.

There are actually two known ways of going to the crater from Capaz, Tarlac, the longer one requires four to five hours trekking along a gradual gradient of rocky trail, while the shorter one is via skyway,  where only 4×4 vehicles are allowed, passing to a desert like field and traversing an uphill trail to a jump-off point that requires only one to two hours of trekking. We took the latter, and after one to two hours of walking on a rocky trail, we finally reached the crater around 10 in the morning.

The scene on the top is fascinating. The crater reflects a vivid color that perfectly matched its gray sand wall and  blue sky. It is really picturesque. I forgot the hunger, the tiring two hour trek (how much more if we didn’t take the skyway) and the heat of the sun. I just marveled on the awesome scenery right in front of my eyes, then after a moment of enjoying its beauty, I grabbed my camera and started capturing it digitally.

After sometime, more tourists arrived in the crater. I put my camera to rest. I sat near the water and just killed the time eating my trail foods while watching people and the surroundings, others were busy clicking their shutters, exploring the area and swimming in the crater. I loved the moment. It is not everyday that I get to see amazing natural scenes, and most if not all require hard work, patience and a strong will to see nature at its best.

Day Trek Itinerary

As mentioned, it is possible to trek Mt. Pinatubo on a day. Here is our itinerary.

03:00am – Departure to Barangay Sta. Juliana, Capaz, Tarlac 06:00am – Arrival at Tourism Office, Capaz, Tarlac for Registration 06:30am – 4 x 4 skyway ride to jump-off point 07:30am – Trek from jump-off point to crater 09:30am – Arrival at the crater, explore, photo ops 11:30nn – Lunch 01:30pm – Departure from crater to jump off point 03:30pm – Arrival at jump off point, 4 x 4 ride back to Tourism Office 04:00pm – Arrival at Tourism Office 05:00pm – Departure to Manila

Before going home, have a glimpse of Philippine History at Capas Shrine. It is a memorial shrine for those Filipino and American soldiers who died during the Bataan Death March during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines of World War II. See the 70-meter obelisk towers above the grounds of the former interment camp and imagine yourself  seeing The Needle of Washington DC.

Bring your own lunch, there are no restaurants on the crater, and please follow the LEAVE NO TRAIL PRINCIPLE: TAKE NOTHING BUT PICTURES,  LEAVE NOTHING BUT FOOTPRINTS, KILL NOTHING BUT TIME.

For a day trip, P1500-P2000 would be enough. Yes, swimming is allowed in the crater lake.

Some more info for everyone. Also available is a Pinatubo flight with I believe a cessna aircraft departing from Clark airfield. Price about PHP4500 pp and tour will take about 50 minutes. Well worth a different view of Pinatubo.

I don’t know what registration fee are you talking. If you are talking about the registration fee for the climbers, it is P50 plus a guide fee of P500 (for one to five trekkers). If you are talking about the Travel factor Registration Fee for the climb, it is at P2000 all in.

Mt. Pinatubo may have brought pain and suffering more than two decades ago but it is nowadays a testament to the never-ending wonders of nature. This magnificent creation is now dubbed as “The Beautiful Disaster” and has been one of the most sought locations for movies. Bet no one ever thought that the monster that once plagued the entire nation will evolve into something inexplicably beautiful. Twenty years ago, people would cringe by the mere mention of Mt. Pinatubo but today, its name is synonymous to adventure, fun and unrivaled charm.

THE JOURNEY

12 Midnight. I was on a cab moving towards Five Star Bus Station in Cubao. With me was my 30L Rhinox backpack, sheer courage, anticipation and uncontainable excitement. Ten Years. It was ten years ago since I last saw these friends I’ve known since I was six. The memories of us chasing one another at the school’s lawn under the midday sun during breaks put a little smile on my lips. We had so much fun back when we were younger and to be able to enjoy their company once more in one epic adventure in Mt. Pinatubo is such a delightful opportunity I surely can’t miss.

Four years. That was how long I stalled my Mt. Pinatubo adventure due to some unforeseen circumstances. It just makes me glad that I am finally making this long time dream a reality and I have my long time friends to share it with. As soon as I reached the bus station in Cubao, I quickly grabbed my stuff and searched for those faces I last saw ten years ago. I somehow feared for awkward moments given how I wasn’t the type to communicate constantly with people but as soon as we saw one another, words came flowing through that we spent hours talking just about anything. Guess friends will always be friends no matter what.

Travelling from Manila to Capas, Tarlac took only two hours. At four in the morning, we were in McDonalds Capas sharing stories over coffee and cheesy eggdesal. Thirty minutes past the hour of five, off we went to journey the roads to the DOT registration site. The tricycle ride was pretty much uneventful with the exception of the beautiful sunrise enveloping the far flung horizons with orange and crimson. A few minutes past the hour of six in the morning, we arrived at the registration site.

After all the formalities were covered, off we started with our adventure ridden in a 4×4 jeep. We were kind of disappointed at first cause we wanted an open jeep but what we were given was the covered jeep. We felt like it wouldn’t give us the kind of adventure we hoped to experience.

The first “supposedly exhilarating” part of our 4×4 ride was crossing the river but since  we were all safe and sound inside a close jeep, the exhilaration didn’t hit us that much. After crossing a half kilometer river, we continued the ride passing by rugged terrains all the way to what they call the “Toblerone Hills”. We stopped by for a moment, took some photos and interacted with the cool Aeta kids. We then resumed the ride to an even more rugged terrain until we reached the start point for the trek.

It was 8AM and the sun has already made its way up the sky when we started the hike. It was at first very easy but after covering several meters, the rugged terrain began. Things have started to get too challenging when the scorching heat began to takes its toll. While the hike was generally easy with us hiking along rocks and crossing too many streams I lost count of, it was the sun which made the hike a nightmare.

We stopped for breathers several times before being able to cover almost half of that 7KM hike. We arrived at a resting hut where a welcome sign to Mt. Pinatubo stood. We rested for a bit, took some photos, relieved ourselves of thirst and pretty much did everything to prepare ourselves for the next hour or so of hiking under the scorching heat of the sun. When we felt we’ve rested enough, we continued the hike.

The hike went on along gradually ascending dry and rugged path. This time we were crossing wider streams of freezing cold water. If only I wasn’t wearing a shoe, I would have loved to dip my feet into the water to freshen up a bit. It would really be a pleasurable feeling being able to escape the punishing heat of the sun but we needed to get going or we would be dealing with an even worse pain given it was already approaching the hour of 10AM and we were no where half way to the crater.

After overcoming several mini-river crossing and enduring that knee breaking hike along a gradually ascending path emblazoned with oversized rocks, we finally covered 6KM of the hike and arrived at a resting hut. There I was able to finally relieve myself off water which I had been suppressing for a good 2 hours since there was no way I could sit anywhere in the trail and pee.

I never really expected the hike to be that exhausting. If I would really think about it, it would no where be as difficult as the other mountains I had hiked before but Mt. Pinatubo really gave me a hard time. Yeah, I think I should keep on getting better. Everyone does. It doesn’t matter really how many mountains you had conquered but when you’re in a mountain, uncertainty is a total guarantee.

When we were ready to resume the hike, off we went to the final stretch of our Mt. Pinatubo adventure. From the resting area, we descended to a river. This time the hike would be along rocks accompanied by gushing water. Unlike the first 6KM of the hike where we encountered moderate uphill walk, the last kilometer of hike was like climbing a ladder of boulders dripping wet with water. It was an assault from the start to finish.

Not only did the final stretch leave us out of breath due to the continuous uphill path we had to pass through but it did challenge our balance as plenty of times we needed to jump over gushing water with only slippery rocks waiting on the other side. Just as it had always been, I was walking last trying to keep pace with the rest of the pack. And just like I had always been, I was able to conquer my human weakness and survive.

A few minutes before the clock hit the hour of 11AM, I caught up with my friends who were waiting for me seated on a concrete ladder leading the way up to the crater. I took some time to catch my breath and when I was finally ready, together we climbed that 50-step ladder towards where our priceless reward awaited.

Relief engulfed my entire body as soon as my eyes got a glimpse of that mesmerizing pool of emerald green water. There was no way to describe the joy I was feeling at that moment after overcoming my own limitations and finally emerging triumphant and bestowed with the best reward, a stunning view view of Mt. Pinatubo crater. Indeed, she was a beautiful disaster much like how this hike had been. After all the adversities came the most rewarding feeling of success while witnessing Mt. Pinatubo’s beauty unfold with out very eyes.

TIPS AND USEFUL INFO

• The hike is through a rugged terrain all the way up to the crater. It would normally just take two hours the most. I would suggest start hiking early to avoid the sun.
• Bring lots of water. Trying to endure the hike under the scorching heat of the sun would be too impossible without water.
• Food, water and other drinking beverages sold by vendors in the park are triple the original price so you would do best to bring your own food and water enough to last until the end of the hike.
• Bring umbrella not only to ward off the heat of the sun but to shelter you from the rain as it normally rains in Mt. Pinatubo in the afternoon. Rain coat and poncho would do as well.
• Every 4×4 jeep is only good for 5 people max. Tric may be shared by up to 4 people but would depend whether you carry big backpacks.
• There is NO need for slot reservations except during the summer months when influx of visitors are expected. If you need to reserve, please contact Kuya Wendel – +63 919 608 4313
• Option other than 4×4 is ATV. Package for 2 people inc all the fees is P8500. You’ll be taking the short trail to the crater if you would choose this option.
• Cut off time for registration is 8AM for day tour and 2PM for overnighters.
• Best months to go there would be from October-May. During these times, the 4×4 jeep could drive you all the way to the 6KM mark where you would only cover one more kilometer of uphill road to the crater.

HOW TO GET THERE

In Cubao Bus Stations (5-Star/Victory Liner), ride a bus going to Capas Junction (3Hrs ; P172/way) . In Capas Junction, ride a trike going to DOT site (45Min ; P300/trike/way) . Ride a 4×4 jeep to the jump-off (1Hr ; P3000/5pax) then start trek to the crater.

I highly discourage going there while it’s raining. Just keep an eye on the weather. If it improves soon then yes you can go but if it keeps on raining, I suggest you wait.

Yes but there are times when the 4×4 can drive up to the 6Km mark so you would only cover the last kilometer to the crater.

Hi Rio. I think for pure trekking, there is another trail to do that which is via Sapang Uwak/Delta 5.

BACKGROUND As you behold the crater of Mt. Pinatubo, after a two-hour walk, you will be filled with awe. It will be – and this is not an exaggeration – sensory overload, for who would imagine seeing glacier-like barren brown peaks with white smoke effusing up, in the background of a crater lake that was in itself enchanting? It was truly an awesome sight to behold.

Although more of a tourist spot than a mountaineering destination, the Mt. Pinatubo trek is a must-do for Filipino mountaineers because of its stark difference from the regular mountains. Instead of forests you have stretches of sand; and instead of the blue-green mountains, you have a white-gray-brown, almost Alpine, formations.

The elder generations will remember Mt. Pinatubo as a forested mountain; indeed, prior to 1991 nobody expected it to erupt. After all, its previous eruption, 600 years ago, is recalled only in myth as a war between Apung Pinatubo and Apung Sinukuan ( Mt. Arayat ), in which the former threw stones at the latter. The 1991 eruption had worldwide implications: spewed ash reached as far north as Russia , and worldwide temperature dropped by 1 C. There are so many stories and narratives about this internationally-renowned catastrophe.

It is unimaginable then that the most powerful volcanic eruption of the 20th century will, less than two decades later, give rise to one of the country’s most beautiful travel destinations. However, the relative barrenness is a transient phase which will be gone in a matter of years. Trees will grow and the landscape continues to evolve. Hence, enthusiasts are encouraged to visit Mt. Pinatubo while it lasts! The next time around it may no longer be the same.

It is safe to swim in the crater of Mt. Pinatubo , but do not go in the middle. The guides warn that currents might drown you or pull you underneath. Kayaks may be rented at the crater lake. You may climb Pinatubo at any time of the year, but pay attention to weather conditions especially during the wet season months of May to September. Heavy rains, especially those of typhoons, cause lahar floods that have stranded tourists in the past. PinoyMountaineer does not recommend attempting climbs to Mt. Pinatubo if there is any storm within Luzon, even if there is no storm warning for Zambales and Tarlac.

TRIVIA The color of Mt. Pinatubo ’s crater varies from blue to green to brown. From December to February, the color is a beautiful cyan.

Mt. Pinatubo is one of the world’s most famous volcanoes. When it erupted back in 1991, it was considered the second most intense eruption of the 20th century. In addition to that, the event even caused a sulfuric haze that dropped global temperatures for two years.

These days, Mt. Pinatubo sits peacefully and provides a gorgeous backdrop for anyone who visits. It’s a popular tourist attraction. No further than 3 hours away from Metro Manila, you can explore its natural beauty in one day. Not bad if you don’t have vacation leaves or long weekends coming up.

How to Get There

Private Car / Car Rental

As it’s now a popular tourist spot, plenty of travel companies provide private air-conditioned charter vans that can take you and your friends from Manila to Sta. Juliana.

Public Transportation

You can also take the public bus if you are on a budget. You can either take a Tarlac-bound bus and stop at the Capas Public Market, or buy a ticket with any bus line that has routes to Baguio, Ilocos, or Pangasinan. These will pass by Sta. Juliana in Capas, Tarlac.

From Capas, take a jeepney or a tricycle and ride to Sta. Juliana. From there, you will have to pay the environmental fee at the tourism office and book a 4×4 to take you closer to the mountain. The adventure starts the moment you leave the tourism office!

What to Do in Mt. Pinatubo

The hour-long ride on a 4×4 jeepney is the only way to get closer to the mountain. It takes a while but it’s a very fun ride. At the other end of Crow Valley is the start of the trekking point. It may take up to 2 hours of walking one way (4 in total) and is a rigorous exercise, but it’s a lot of fun and you’ll be surrounded with nature the entire time.

The hike may be tiring but all exhaustion will be gone the moment you feast your eyes on the crater’s lake. It is beautiful with clear turquoise waters and surrounding land formations. It’s very exciting to realize that you’re at the crater of a volcano—definitely something to cross off your bucket list!

Travel Advisory

Swimming, kayaking, boat ride and staying close to the water is currently not advisable according to Department of Tourism due to the harmful substances found in the lake.

Other Things to Do in Capas Tarlac

While the sight of the crater’s lake is enough for many visitors, there are lots more you can do at and around Mt. Pinatubo. You can enjoy a relaxing volcanic ash massage at the Pinatubo Spa or take a dip at nearby Bueno and Dolores Hot Springs .

For a bit of culture and history, you can also pass by the Capas Shrine and learn more about WW2 heroes that fought for the freedom of our country. There’s also the Museo de Tarlac in Capas and the O’Donnell Catholic Church where you can see for yourself the remnants of Tarlac’s colorful history.

Mt Pinatubo Travel Tips:

• Always check the weather before planning your Mount Pinatubo Day Tour.
• Eat a big breakfast that will give you lots of energy. Expect a late lunch at around 1:30 PM during the trip.
• Do not forget sunscreen and other garments that will protect you from the Philippine summer heat.
