The Layout of the Nairobi Safari Walk

Once you pay the entry fees and walk in, the first area is on the ground level, with various tree species on display. The first enclosure houses monkeys and baboons.

Then, a few metres in, the buffalo, warthog, and wildebeest area is on the opposite side, followed by the white rhino-protected enclosure.

The rhino boma opens into the wild, where they can roam about the entire side of the park. You then walk into a forested area, where you can see and hear the birds’ call.

Finally, sit on one of the many benches to enjoy your packed lunch in the serene environment.

After the brief nourishment stop, keep walking down the well-kept paths until you reach the boardwalk.

At the end is the lookout area where you can see wild animals drinking from the waterhole. Unfortunately, it is seasonal, and there are months when it is completely dry.

The most exciting part of the tour is the lion, cheetah, and leopard enclosures. Here you spend time trying to catch a glimpse of the big cats that prefer to camouflage at the tree tops. It is your lucky day if they emerge, so time your visit during feeding.

There is no glass covering in this section, although there is a metal mesh covering to prevent the animals from jumping out. However, the lion’s enclosure has a glass covering and can be seen roaming around its habitat.

The aerial view at the end of the boardwalk also allows you to see beyond the Nairobi National Park.

Walk back using the other side of the park to catch a glimpse of young antelopes and gazelles. Towards the exits is a crocodile waterhole and tortoise enclosure to end a lovely visit.

The entire walk is about a kilometre and a half long. The beauty of the boardwalk is that it is painted green to blend in with the natural environment.

If you are still not ready to leave, there are more benches in a shaded area next to the exit to sit and rest.

Remember to take care of your environment by not littering. Instead, respect the animal’s habitat by protecting it from pollution.

Nairobi National Park is a national park in Kenya that was established in 1946 about 7 km south of Nairobi. It is fenced on three sides, whereas the open southern boundary allows migrating wildlife to move between the park and the adjacent Kitengela plains. 

The park is sometimes called Kifaru Ark, which means “Rhinoceros Sanctuary”. It is one of Kenya’s most successful rhinoceros sanctuaries, and it is one of only a few parks where visitors can be certain of seeing a black rhinoceros in its natural habitat.

Herbivores are also known to gather in the park during the dry season and the park itself brings a unique charm that sets it apart from other parks in Kenya with the proximity alone outside the capital city making it an easy addition to most visitors travel plans.

Size aside however, Nairobi National Park’s landscape hosts thousands of wild animals at home in various ecosystems. Primarily the park consists of open grasslands dotted with scrub and upland forests, making it an ideal habitat for many of Kenya’s native species. 

But given the relatively restrictive size of the park, its carrying capacity for predators is limited. Most are shocked to learn that Nairobi National Park is home to a nearly complete set of Kenyan species. 

Only leaving the most formidable creature, elephants, out of the landscape. Simply put the park is too small for their massive appetites, plus elephants would destroy the three-sided fence perimeter. 

Nairobi NP is known for healthy populations of cape buffalo, Masai giraffe, plains zebra, impala, ostrich, and hippo. And where there is prey, there are often predators! Within Nairobi National Park’s boundaries live prides of lion, spotted hyena, jackal, and even elusive leopard and cheetah.  

Visitors will also find numerous lions, hippos, giraffes, zebras, over 400 bird species, and many large herbivores. But the main highlight of Nairobi National Park is its resident rhinos. 

In fact, the park hosts one of the highest densities of black rhino in Kenya. Many view the park as the best location to observe this critically endangered species in the entire country, if not the world. 

Nairobi National Park is home to approximately 111 black rhinos and 24 white rhinos. These population numbers are a true success considering the park was void of rhinos until their introduction back in 1996. 

With over 500 bird species recorded, Nairobi NP probably gives Kenya’s capital the longest bird list of all cities in the world. The park’s substantial area of undisturbed grassland is of great importance for species such as the restricted-range Jackson’s widowbird, which breeds here regularly after good rains. 

Other grassland birds include ostriches, secretary birds and bustards. Nairobi NP is a popular birding destination and it’s easy to book a full or half day guided birding trip at short notice.

The park’s predominant environment is open grass plain with scattered Acacia bushes. The western uplands of the park have highland dry forest with stands of Olea africana, Croton dichogamus, Brachylaena hutchinsii, and Calodendrum. 

The lower slopes of these areas are grassland. Themeda, cypress, Digitaria, and Cynodon species are found in these grassland areas.

Nairobi National Park is located 9km/ 5mi south of Nairobi. The park is usually visited as a half-day or full-day trip from a hotel in the city. 

Getting to the city of Nairobi is easy – it’s one of the biggest and busiest transport hubs on the continent. International flights arrive in Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), 15km/9mi southeast of Nairobi.

Nairobi Safari Walk is one place I frequently visit to connect with nature, relax, and see wildlife at a close range.

It’s also a perfect place to take kids or hang out on a weekend afternoon. Most people fall in love with the lush green nature and the peaceful environment.

I live in Nairobi and after doing the safari walk so many times, I’ve written this ultimate guide to help you visit like a local.

So let’s dive right into it!

Where is Nairobi Safari Walk Located?

Nairobi Safari Walk is located at the KWS headquarters along Lang’ata Road. About 7 km south of Nairobi CBD and less than a 30-minute drive from the city center.

The safari walk is right next to the main entrance to Nairobi National Park and Animal Orphanage .

It’s conveniently located along the highway making it easily accessible using public or private means of transport.

Now that we’ve established its location, you’ll want to know how to get there.

To get to the Nairobi Safari walk, you can either use a matatu , taxi, or Uber .

As mentioned earlier, it’s so accessible for everyone and how you get there is all a matter of preference.

Using public transport ( Matatus ) is the cheapest way to get there. If you are new to Nairobi, don’t worry these are the easiest matatus to locate.

You’ll want to board a matatu heading to Ongata Rongai (No: 125). These are located along Moi Avenue near Africa Nazarene University or opposite the August 7th Memorial Park .

I recommend using these buses as you get to kill two birds with one stone. You experience the popular matatu culture in Nairobi and also get to the park easily.

Other matatus you can use include those heading to Kiserian (No 126). Located at the railway station bus terminal and along Moi Avenue next to those heading to Ongata Rongai.

The other public transport option is catching a bus heading to Langata (No 15) found at the Bus Station in downtown Nairobi.

Remember to let the conductor/driver know to drop you off at KWS or Nairobi National Park bus stop , this is on the left side of the road when coming from the city center.

The most convenient option for most visitors is Uber or a taxi. The price will vary depending on your pickup point.

You could also book a tour including a visit to the safari walk and your tour operator will organize the logistics.

In summary, you can catch a matatu to Nairobi safari walk, or use Uber, or a taxi. Once the matatu drops you at the bus stop, simply walk into the KWS premises and you’ll be directed to the safari walk entry and payment point.

How much does Nairobi Safari Walk cost?

The Nairobi safari walk entrance fee is KES 215 for adult citizens and residents and KES 125 for kids. Tourists pay $22 for adults and $13 for kids as of 2024.

No cash payments are accepted all payments are through the e-citizen portal. It can be a bit complicated for a first-time user but quite easy once you familiarize yourself with the new look and changes on the portal.

If you don’t have an account yet, the receptionists will help you with the payment process but a service charge may apply. I was charged 50 shillings extra.

The Safari Walk Experience and what to expect

The Nairobi Safari walk offers visitors a chance to closely encounter wildlife, see 3 unique ecosystems found around Kenyan, and relax.

It’s a quick introduction to Kenyan safaris.

After payment, you walk into the main area and immediately encounter the wetlands. Here you’ll find pygmy hippos, crocodiles, water lilies, turtles, and information on all national parks in Kenya.

At the entry just next to the wetlands, lush green palms line the boardwalk on both sides giving you a feeling of entering into a jungle.

Your surroundings completely change from the busy highway to a serene and quiet environment. The only sounds you hear are from nature and maybe an occasional plane flying by.

In each section with wildlife, you’ll find signs explaining what animal is there and some fun facts about it.

The beautiful palm walkway leads you to the savannah ecosystem. Here you’ll find herds of animals grazing in the central area. Here you can test your wildlife knowledge by identifying the various animals.

Some animals to expect include; the rare bongo, white rhino, albino zebra, antelopes, giraffes, ostrich, hyena, buffalo, colubus monkeys, birds, and many primates.

Well landscaped walkways help you navigate around and walk to the elevated boardwalks where you’ll find predators.

Rhinos, lions, cheetahs, leopards, and buffalos are found behind highly secured areas keeping you and the animals safe.

As you head towards the elevated boardwalk, you’ll encounter the forest ecosystem. Along the way, there are signs on which animals to find where.

Each viewpoint is strategically positioned to help you spot the animals. In addition, there are benches all over the park in case you need to relax.

The furthest accessible point on the boardwalk gives you a view of the Nairobi National Park and the Mokoyiet River that runs through the park. On this side, you’ll also find so many baboons/monkeys hanging by the boardwalk.

Nairobi safari walk is a 2.5 km walking tour and can take about one hour or less to fully explore.

I highly recommend spending enough time spotting animals such as the leopard and cheetah that love hiding in trees. Or simply admiring the grazing animals in the savannah ecosystem and enjoying nature.

Don’t just rush by, relax on the benches and simply be in the moment with nature. Also, take beautiful pictures.

What is the best time to visit Nairobi Safari walk

You can visit the safari walk any time of the year and any day of the week between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm.

In my opinion, the best time to visit the Nairobi safari walk is in the morning hours. The weather is just perfect even in the hot months and you find wildlife relaxing in good viewing spots.

In hot months some animals such as lions and leopards hide within tree branches when it gets too hot and can be hard to spot.

On the other hand, during the rainy months in Kenya, such as April, it tends to rain heavily in the afternoons.

This is just my preference but you can visit any time as long as it is within operating hours.

Matatus that will take you to the Nairobi Safari walk include No. 125 heading to Ongata Rongai, No. 126 heading to Kiserian, and No. 12 heading to Lang’ata. Since you are the safari walk isn’t their ultimate destination, ask the conductor to drop you at the KWS bus stop.

You can bring snacks to enjoy and don’t litter the park. There is no point in carrying huge picnic baskets with food since the safari walk is only about 1 hour. There’s also a restaurant within the premises.

The best time of day to visit the safari walk is in the morning and evenings. You can visit any time of the day but these are the best hours to escape the hot sun.

Nairobi safari walk is an educational and informative guided walking tour done on Langata road next to the Kenya Wildlife Service at Headquarters and the main entrance of the Nairobi national park.

The Kenya Wildlife Service Headquarters is a big complex located 7 kilometers from Nairobi City, the walk gives visitors a clear picture of what to look forward to while on an exploration adventure in ant of the many Kenya National Parks while on the safari.

The Safari walk showcases Kenya’s vast natural diversity and eco-systems namely the savannahs, forests and wetlands, on this activity visitors walk along the raised broad walk through the different habitats. Visitors get to observe from close range the wonderful variety of wildlife in each ecosystem.

A wetland covered in water lilies and fringed with papyrus is the first ecosystem visitors will encounter, the wetland is also a home to grazing pigmy hippos and crocodiles.

The next habitat to encounter is the Savannah environment which hosts herds of albino zebras, other regular species include antelopes, giraffes, hyenas, the rare Bongo, white rhino, leopards, cheetahs and rhinos.

The raised boardwalks meander through the different enclosures with signboards along the way providing useful information on the species of plants and animals found here.

There are strategically located viewpoints close to the enclosures offering a close-up look at the occupants going about their daily lives, a nature trail through the woodland, the last of the 3 habitats in the Nairobi safari walk showcases some of Kenya’s indigenous plants with signposts along the trail describing their traditional uses.

The best time to visit Nairobi national park for a safari including the Nairobi safari walk is during the dry season, though the park can be visited all year round.

The dry season in Nairobi national park is from July to October and also January and February. The month of July has the lowest rainfall among all months of the year, along with July, August being the driest month in Nairobi City .

The Nairobi national park is easily accessible by both public and private means, board a matatus going to Lang’ata (number 15) from Bus Station  or board a matatus going to Ongata Ronga (number 125/126) from Railway Bus Station. Alternatively you can hail a taxi to and from your home or hotel in Nairobi.

Welcome to Kenya’s most accessible yet incongruous safari experience. Set on the city’s southern outskirts, Nairobi National Park (at 117 sq km, one of Africa’s smallest) has abundant wildlife that can, in places, be viewed against a backdrop of city skyscrapers and planes coming in to land – it's one of the only national parks on earth bordering a capital city. Remarkably, the animals seem utterly unperturbed by it all.

The park has acquired the nickname ‘Kifaru Ark’, a testament to its success as a rhinoceros ( kifaru in Kiswahili) sanctuary. The park is home to the world's densest concentration of black rhinos (more than 50), though even the park's strong antipoaching measures couldn't prevent poachers from killing one of the rhinos in August 2013 and then again in January 2014. They were the first such attacks in six years, and reflect the current sky-high Asian black-market price for rhino horn.

Lions and hyenas are also commonly sighted within the park; rangers at the entrance usually have updates on lion movements. You’ll need a bit of patience and a lot of luck to spot the park’s resident cheetahs and leopards. Other regularly spotted species include gazelles, warthogs, zebras, giraffes, ostriches and buffaloes.

The park’s wetland areas sustain approximately 400 bird species, which is more than in the whole of the UK.

Matatus (minibuses) 125 and 126 (KSh50, 30 to 45 minutes) pass by the main park entrance from the train station. You can also go by private vehicle. Nairobi tour companies offer half-day safaris (from US$75 per person).

Apart from the main entrance, which lies 7km from the city centre, there are other gates on Magadi Rd and the Athi River gate; the latter is handy if you’re continuing on to Mombasa, Amboseli or the Tanzanian border. The roads in the park are passable with 2WDs, but travelling in a 4WD is never a bad idea, especially if the rains have been heavy.

Unless you already have your own vehicle, the cheapest way to see the park is on the shuttle, a big Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) bus that leaves the main gate at 2pm on Sunday for a 2½-hour tour. You need to book in person at the main gate by 1.30pm, but do call ahead if you want to do the tour, as times can change.

Nairobi Safari Walk

Nairobi National Park is a national park in Kenya that was established in 1946 about 7 km south of Nairobi. It is fenced on three sides, whereas the open southern boundary allows migrating wildlife to move between the park and the adjacent Kitengela plains. Herbivores gather in the park during the dry season. Nairobi National Park is negatively affected by increasing human and livestock populations, changing land use and poaching of wildlife. Despite its proximity to the city and its relative small size, it boasts a large and varied wildlife population, and is one of Kenya's most successful rhinoceros sanctuaries.
