Nissan Patrol review: old-school V8 SUV tested
What are you doing with El Chapo’s car?
It’s true the Nissan Patrol has a whiff (or snort) of the white powdery stuff about it. No idea why. Maybe we’ve just watched too many episodes of Narcos , in which Pablo Escobar’s henchmen travel from murderous appointment to murderous appointment in its mid-Eighties equivalent. Or maybe it’s true, and the world’s drug smugglers really do rate these things above every other SUV. Shame there is no evidence to support this.
Moving swiftly on…
Quite right. If you’re European, you won’t have seen one of these before. Not this generation, anyway. There’s just not enough demand for an eight-seater, V8-engined body-on-frame SUV in this part of the world for Nissan to justify selling it here. So it doesn’t. Not anymore.
But in the Middle East, where petrol is so cheap it’s basically free, these things are near enough as common as Ford Fiestas are in Britain. It’s over there where the Patrol’s Land Cruiser-rivalling, decades-old reputation for go-anywhere indestructibility has snowballed into fiercely loyal following. Even Emirati royals are known for having Patrol-shaped soft-spots – and they’re well-heeled enough to buy any SUV they want.
I think we need a history lesson.
The ‘latest’ Patrol, codename Y62, has been around since 2010. And it’s still a proper off-roader at heart, albeit one festooned with much luxury and shiny faux-wood trim.
It can trace it roots back to the early Fifties – the original Patrol was launched in ’51, sold exclusively in Japan and used mainly by its military. A few years later, a second-gen Patrol was allegedly the first car to cross Australia’s notoriously inhospitable Simpson Desert.
This Patrol is a bit softer than its predecessors. An SUV that can do off-road stuff, not a 4x4 that’s built exclusively to do it. The Aussies were especially unhappy the last one, the Y61, was taken off sale there (though you can still buy one in the Middle East, where it’s sold as the Patrol Super Safari), because it was a proper back-to-basics off-roader, and there aren’t many of those around anymore.
I see. Let’s start with the inside.

Ok, so there’s acres of space wherever you sit (even in the third row, which can take three people) and the seats are wide, soft and pillowy, but the dashboard is distinctly 2007. It’s packed with buttons and, while they all work (and will no doubt continue to for decades to come), there’s just no escaping the fact they, and the infotainment system, look like they belong in a car from a decade and a half ago. Get in a Patrol in 2018, and it’s eminently obvious this is a car that was released in 2010.
Is it old-fashioned to drive, too?
Yeah. We take back what we said earlier. This is not a sports utility vehicle, there’s no sports involved. It’s comfortable and easy enough to drive, and the 5.6-litre N/A V8 gives enough acceleration and a good but subdued noise, but don’t be tricked into thinking this is anything like a modern, unibody SUV. The separate chassis makes it good off-road (we tried, can confirm) sure, but on-road it makes the Patrol ponderous and truck like. Best ignore any buttons with the word ‘Sport’ on them, forget about the glassy steering, and just sink into the throne-like driver’s seat, and waft your way to wherever you’re going.
I think I still want one.
If you’re in the US, the Armada is basically the same thing, just with a few of the more hardcore off-road tech taken out. So if you really want one, then by all means go ahead. But in Europe? Don’t worry, you’re not missing out. Our modern SUVs are better to drive, more comfortable, faster and some will rival the Patrol off-road too. Especially so-equipped Range Rovers, with their deeply intelligent Terrain Response system. The Patrol is weirdly likable we’ll admit, and well suited to the markets in which it’s sold, but it’s not for us. Sorry.

Are you thinking of getting a used hybrid car? Then the Japanese Nissan Patrol is a good choice. AutoUncle has 10 used Nissan Patrols for sale in UK, gathered from online marketplaces and various dealership websites, which means you get nearly an exhaustive overview of all available pre-owned Nissan Patrol for sale in the United Kingdom.
What is the price of a used Nissan Patrol?
The pricing range for a used Nissan Patrol model at AutoUncle will accommodate a wide range of budgetary demands. The listed prices for these pre-owned vehicles presently start as low as £4,500 and extend up to £27,950.
The cost of a pre-owned Nissan Patrol is determined by several factors. Key contributing elements include the year of manufacture, fuel consumption of the model, how far the car has already travelled as well as the level of equipment in the car.
As an example, a newer model with fewer miles covered, or a high-end version boasting a potent engine, often fetches a top-tier price.
Equipment for Nissan Patrol
The most popular equipment variants for the Nissan Patrol are:
- Nissan Patrol S Plus (2 cars for sale at an average price of £4,748)
- Nissan Patrol Nismo (1 cars for sale at an average price of £27,950)
- Nissan Patrol SE (1 cars for sale at an average price of £7,990)
When assessing the price tags of second-hand Nissan Patrol cars, it is important only comparing the sale prices of cars with a similar engine and equipment variant. If not, you may make a wrong conclusion on which car to acquire.
The Nissan Patrol is popular in the suv body type
In the UK, the Nissan Patrol is exclusively offered in the suv body style. SUV means Sport Utility Vehicle. This is one of the most popular types of cars available today. Cars of this type are versatile and have a higher ride height than traditional cars, which many people prefer.
Red is the most popular colour
The Nissan Patrol is available in the following colours: red, blue, silver, green, gold and grey.
Most motorists prefer the Nissan Patrol in red and AutoUncle has 2 cars for sale in that colour at the moment. The second most popular colour is blue with 2 cars available on AutoUncle, and the third most popular is silver with 1 cars available on AutoUncle.
Positive aspects and things to weigh up about the colour red
Red is a captivating and visually pleasing colour, making it a preferred choice among car enthusiasts. Darker shades of red excel at concealing dirt and mud, resulting in reduced cleaning and maintenance requirements compared to lighter colours. Moreover, red cars are known for their commanding and unmistakable presence on the road, leaving an enduring impression.
One downside of darker red cars is that they may be less visible in low-light or at night, requiring proper lighting for safety. Minor scratches and blemishes are more visible on darker red cars, needing careful maintenance for appearance. Finally, while red is a vibrant and attractive colour for many, personal preferences may vary, and some individuals may prefer more neutral hues.

No car says ?indestructible tank? more than the Nissan Patrol. It?s an immense brute of a 4x4 that?s muscle bound and incredibly hardy. A pure off road machine, it does things regular 4 wheel drive autos can?t, and doesn?t bother with airy fairy characteristics or sensitivity. It?s the kind of car you?d buy if you really want to get out and explore or dominate rough terrain. Dakar Rally anyone?
With a heritage that stretches back all the way to 1951, the Patrol has certainly seen a lot of action over the years. From armies to adventurers and off road enthusiasts, it has been the premier choice for anyone looking for a hardcore versatile 4x4. Available in both long and short wheelbase models, variants include pickups, wagons, cabriolets and regular ?Jeep? types.
Most people buy 4x4s these days because they want the practicality that?s associated with them, not the almighty ability to grab the outdoors by the throat. The Patrol however isn?t a ?poser? by any means- it?s designed to go into the wilds and that?s exactly what it does.
There?s a no-nonsense attitude in terms of design and modern versions look imposing and commanding. The interior is massive and quite comfortable, but remember it?s made to take a pounding so don?t expect form over function as that?s not the case. With an abundance of equipment, incredible practicality and a high driving position, there?s not much it can?t do.
Look, this car is designed to survive in some of the world?s most inhospitable landscapes, so it?s understandable that the ?on road? driving experience isn?t akin to a regular car. While the handling is good enough, it?s not great at speed, but there?s a lot of grip and mountains of power from a monstrous series of engines. Who cares if it doesn?t shine on tarmac when it works wonders on everything else?
It?s very straightforward to get hold of a used Nissan Patrol at Motors.co.uk due to the seriously large selection of cars for sale and big price discounts. For an auto that?s all about being big and strong, the price tag of a pre owned one is actually quite small and meagre, which is great news for buyers.
Basically the Nissan Patrol is the last word when it comes to hardcore 4x4s. While other brands offer better all around packages, the Patrol is by far the best when it comes to tearing up the rough stuff. It?s big, comfortable and spacious, but excels at what it does. If you?re going into the wild, there?s no better car to get you there.

Nissan Patrol Super Safari 2022: upgrades announced for the off-road stalwart
It was tough before, but now the uae favourite has had a series of enhancements that have taken it to the next level.
The new upgraded 2022 Nissan Patrol Super Safari. All photos: Nissan
Never one to let the blowing dust settle around the wheels of its most popular vehicles, Nissan has announced a series of upgrades and adjustments for the 2022 Super Safari, the most hardcore of the Patrol breed .
This offshoot of the UAE’s most popular car is easily distinguishable from the standard version, standing higher and looking just a little bit more high-spirited.
The latest Super Safari comes with a 4.8-litre in-line six-cylinder engine that produces 280 horsepower and 451Nm of torque. You can get the car in a five-speed automatic or manual transmission version.
The 2022 car has greater ground clearance, allowing it to tackle harsh gradients with more ease. It also has a heavy-duty coil spring suspension, with telescopic shock absorbers and a torsion bar, which should make the ride smoother.
In addition to the usual electronic power steering, the Super Safari is also equipped with a range of Nissan’s intelligent mobility features.
These include cruise control, tyre-pressure monitoring, anti-lock braking, airbags, and a system that prevents understeer and oversteer by reducing engine speed and applying the brakes individually on specific wheels when entering or exiting a corner. Not a feature those into drifting would approve of.
Inside, drivers can opt to have the seats and cabin decked out in PVC, fabric, or tan leather, with the latter being adorned with a special Super Safari emboss.
The new vehicle now comes in three colours — black, white, or gold — with a choice of grey or gold flourishes across the roof, front and rear bumpers, wheel arches and spare tyre cover. That is all set off, of course, with the bold Super Safari decal along the side, just to drive the point home.
The Patrol is now in its 70th year of production , with a special edition being unveiled at Expo 2020 . The Super Safari, introduced in 2016, is a trim line specific to the Middle East.
The 2022 Patrol Super Safari is now available in the UAE at Al Masaood Automobiles in Abu Dhabi and Arabian Automobiles in Dubai. It has a starting price of Dh153,000 ($41,654).

Safari owners in the UK
- Add to quote
Hi, Are there any present safari owners here in the UK? If so has anyone had any issue sourcing parts? Also do used Safaris command a premium over normal patrols? Im based in the South East (UK) so was wondering if there were any expert mechanics down this way as I dont have a lot of time to do work on the car.
Post some pics of your car and what year model, engine and trim level might help. The Patrol is called different names depending on which country you're in. Japan and Europe they are called a Safari, In Australia they are called a Patrol. Should be basically the same. However in Australia in the early 90's, the GQ model had a Safari released but I think it was a special edition which had some extras the stock patrol did not have. If you need new parts try this place in UAE. www.Partsouq.com Put in your vin and you will get the factory parts catalogue for your car. They will ship to anywhere in the world.

Hi, I don’t own it yet. Just looking at the pitfalls and problems before I commit. It’s a jap safari (high top) import 1992 4.2 manual Diesel with Kinugawa aftermarket turbo. No leather trim and no wood. In fact I have a normal gq; can I take the leather door cards off and swap them with the safari? I’m hoping the fixtures underneath are the same?
Is this the one in eBay with the red graphics? Looks absolutely beautiful, wish I had the money. You don't see many of these in the UK, or GQs for that, so parts are probably equally as hard to find as for your GQ? There a European based app called AutoDoc which I've used for Y61 parts and also Landcruiser 70 series parts (a 1980s one). Worth putting the Safari reg in there and seeing how much stuff is available off the shelf. Postage can take a couple weeks but had some good purchases on there as it shows comparable OEM part numbers etc. Other than that maybe check Milners, and Japanese4x4 parts. If you buy that Safari, it would be cool to see pictures if you do modify it. Cheers. Mike.
The only difference is the roof line. Body wise the rest of the car will be pretty much identical.
thanks!!
Ah, I’ve seen that one. I couldn’t justify the price for the condition vs my GQ. It’s a lot more expensive than my petrol GQ. I’m erring away from the safari as much as I think they look great only due the electronics being on 24V and with safaris made, parts are more scarce.
It is but as with all car ads, the reality wasn’t quite up to the photos. Paintwork is a bit faded, but seems like an honest motor. 18k is a lot though
Makes me feel a bit better! Always a long trip to see a motor when you don't end up buying it. Gotta know when to walk and not get carried away. Like you say, £18k is a lot of money. Especially in a country with silly ULEZ restrictions growing. I do wonder how long old 4x4s will be allowed on the roads here...
Ah, thanks for the advice. I’ve not seen a Safari for sale for a while so I’ll keep my eyes peeled.
