Can you ski on christmas day.

First up, let’s get this question out of the way. It’s one I hear all the time: Can you ski on Christmas Day? Yes – of course you can! Imagine waking up on Christmas morning, surrounded by snow-covered peaks, and hitting the slopes with your loved ones. Most – if not all – European ski resorts keep the lifts running on Christmas Day, so you can ski to your heart's content.

What to expect skiing in Europe at Christmas

Picture this: charming alpine villages adorned with twinkling lights, festive markets, and the scent of mulled wine wafting through the air. There will be extra activities put on for families and to build on the festive cheer. Undoubtedly, there will be a Santa’s grotto to get family photos taken and depending on your ski resort, Father Christmas will visit the ski slopes. In my home ski resort of La Plagne, Father Christmas visits in his sleigh pulled by either huskies or reindeer (depending on the year!).

Skiing in Europe at Christmas is a magical experience that combines world-class slopes with holiday cheer.

For a good example of what to expect in a European ski resort for Christmas, you can read my full review of La Plagne at Christmas .

How to save money skiing at Christmas

I've got a little secret for you – booking early can save you a bundle! Keep an eye out for Christmas ski deals and packages that often include accommodation, ski passes, and more. It's the perfect way to make your budget stretch.

To hack your Christmas ski holidays and find cheap ski deals, try these 5 things:

  • Sign up to ski resort and tour operator newsletters
  • Join any loyalty programs you can take advantage of – that don’t leave you out of pocket
  • Follow your top ski resorts and tour ops on all their socials
  • Find community Facebook groups for the ski resorts and other ski communities
  • Use price comparison sites like Booking.com , Ski Lifts, Rail Europe etc., to find the cheapest of each ski holiday element

When is the best time to book a Christmas ski holiday?

The early bird catches the worm! To secure the best deals and accommodations, start planning and booking your Christmas ski holiday as early as possible. That way, you'll have more options and fewer worries. This is especially important for families and larger groups of friends who are looking for specific ski chalets with 16 beds for example.

Will there be snow in Europe for a Christmas ski holiday?

Whether there will be snow in Europe for a Christmas ski holiday is a question I hear a lot. And whilst I’m not God (spoiler alert!), the good news is that European ski resorts, especially those in the Alps, Pyrenees, and high-altitude ski resorts, generally enjoy reliable snowfall during the winter season. And while Europe generally offers great skiing opportunities during the Christmas holiday season, it's wise to do your research and monitor conditions to ensure you're greeted by the picturesque winter wonderland you're dreaming of when you arrive at your chosen resort.

Should I book ski-in/ski-out accommodation for Christmas?

For the ultimate convenience, ski-in/ski-out accommodations are a game-changer. They'll save you time and make your holiday stress-free, especially when you're skiing with the family.

Jen’s Top Tip : If you are beginner skiers or skiing with young children, what you really want is ski accommodation close to either the ski lift you will mainly be using or the ski school meeting point. Ask your accommodation provider about this, they’ll be able to let you know.

Luxury Christmas ski holidays in Europe?

If you're in the mood for some extra pampering, there are plenty of luxurious options available in Europe's top ski resorts. Think spa days, gourmet dining, and stunning mountain views. If you are looking for something specific, then this is another tick in the “book early” column to make sure you get exactly what you want.

What to wear for skiing at Christmas

If you’re heading skiing for the first time or for a Christmas ski holiday, you might be wondering what to wear for skiing at Christmas?

To start, layering is essential. Begin with moisture-wicking thermal base layers for both your top and bottom. Materials like merino wool or synthetic fabrics work wonders in keeping you warm and dry as you glide through the snow. These base layers create a crucial barrier against the cold.

For your mid-layers, opt for insulating options such as a cozy fleece or a down jacket. These pieces help trap heat close to your body, ensuring you stay snug during your skiing adventures.

Your ski jacket plays a vital role in protecting you from the elements. Make sure to choose a waterproof and insulated ski jacket. It'll shield you from the snow, wind, and cold temperatures that often accompany winter sports. A jacket with a hood adds an extra layer of warmth and protection.

When it comes to your lower half, consider insulated, waterproof ski pants. Not only do they keep your legs warm and dry, but they also typically feature ventilation zippers, allowing you to regulate your body temperature as you heat up on the slopes.

Now, here's where the holiday spirit comes into play. Don't hesitate to add a touch of festivity to your skiing attire. During the Christmas week, many skiers dress up as Santa or in other festive costumes, creating a lively and cheerful atmosphere on the slopes. You can join in the fun by incorporating Christmas-themed snow gear or even dusting off your old-fashioned and vintage Christmas sweaters. Embracing the holiday spirit adds an extra layer of joy to your skiing adventure.

So, as you prepare for your Christmas ski holiday, remember that layering for warmth and comfort is key. And don't be afraid to get creative with your attire to infuse the slopes with a bit of Christmas cheer. Whether you're skiing as Santa Claus or sporting your coziest holiday sweater, you're sure to make memories that will last a lifetime.

ski trips christmas 2023

Updated November 29, 2023

Many Colorado resorts have seen 2-3 feet since the beginning of November, and there is a healthy storm bearing down on the Rockies for early December. Steamboat, a perennial performer during the early season , saw more than 20 inches.

The 10-day outlook for Jackson Hole and Targhee includes two feet of snow, with three feet of snow headed to Utah mountains on the Salt Lake side of the Wasatch. The Pacific Northwest has a number of ski resorts that look due for 3-4 feet of snow during the next 10 days.

There is also some good snow on the ground at Alta and Snowbird, whose northerly aspects help them preserve it better than most places during the early season. There is more on the way, too, for Utah, with the Cottonwood Canyons due to see a foot plus during the next seven days.

This early season still has the potential to shape up like last year when the snows of November and December were kind to the North American West. We hope for more of the same in 2023-2024. We will continue to update this page in the fall as we have more data on snowfall and forecasts beginning in late September.

Last season, early openings were the norm, from the Sierra to the Front Range of Colorado. It was the strongest snow season overall in many years and the strongest start to the winter for holiday skiing that we've seen in decades.

Jackson Hole, for instance, received more than 200" of snow before Christmas and New Year's

Overall: This is the best guide for understanding which ski resorts are the best bets for good early season snow conditions, including Christmas and New Year's 2023 - 2024.

Our data go back 40 years and we take into account every variable that contributes to a given ski resort having good snow and terrain open for the holidays.

Most big destination ski resorts are full for the Christmas - New Year's holidays during the early ski season. This is, quite simply, the time that many people find it most easy to get away. Kids are out of school and many companies have a break between December 25 and January 2.

People don't ski winter break because it's a good time to ski—it sometimes isn't—they ski winter break because it's when they can ski. Many of us find ourselves in this exact situation. And when one can ski, one should ski.

Booking a ski trip during early in the ski season can pose a bit of a risk. There are years when some western ski resorts aren't close to being fully open at this time. But some ski resorts have far better historical records of getting most of their terrain open by December 25.

We've compiled a handy list to guide skiers planning trips during the early winter and around the Christmas and New Year's holidays. The important factors that determine what resorts are on this list:

  • The amount of terrain as a percentage of a resort's total that a ski resort averages having open on December 25.
  • The percentage of winters in which the resort has less than half of its terrain open on December 25—a smaller number here is better.
  • A resort's average seasonal snowfall.
  • Just as important, if not more so, than the preceding factor, is the likelihood of the prolonged drought at a given ski resort. Some resorts like those in California have large annual average snowfalls but are also more likely to go a month with less than 30 inches of snow compared with a ski resort in the Rockies. These resorts have higher standard deviations of snowfall and therefore are more likely to have extremely dry early seasons. This is why there are no California resorts on this list.

Top 15 best ski resorts for snow during the early season and Christmas - New Year's break:

Alta - early season snow score: 99.0

Alta has the best snow of any spot that's tracked in North America, and its conditions during the early season are no exception. For skiers hoping to sneak out at the beginning of the season and find a ski resort that's draped head to toe in a deep façade of snow, Alta is always an excellent bet. Its advantageous position in Little Cottonwood Canyon makes it a funnel for snow, turning small early-season weather disturbances into major snow events that leave behind two feet of powder on Alta's iconic slopes. On Christmas day, an average of 96% of Alta's terrain is open for business. Just a scant 5% of winters see Alta with less than half of its terrain open on Dec. 25. For skiers seeking early season deliverance, with a good shot at big-time snow, the opportunities at Alta are nearly unmatched.

Steamboat - early season snow score: 95.9

Steamboat excels at many things, but its snow coverage in the early season of the Rocky Mountain winter is nearly without peer. Anybody who has looked at a map of Colorado knows that Steamboat sits off by itself, away from the rest of Colorado's destination resorts. It's this unique spot on Colorado's high plateau that is a veritable vacuum cleaner for early-season storms that come across the continent. Steamboat averages 93% open on Dec. 25, and only 5% of its winters see conditions where less than half of the mountain is open. Steamboat is further helped by the shape of its mountain, which is chock full of mellow slopes that hold snow rather than sloughing it off like the steeper terrain of Snowbird or Jackson Hole. Steamboat is as close to a sure thing at Christmas and New Year's as a skier can have, and its lodging base is deep and comprehensive, making it an ideal destination for holiday ski trips.

Grand Targhee - early season snow score: 87.0

For snow seekers, Grand Targhee is the best bet in North America for the holidays. It has a perfect record on having all of its lifts and terrain open on Dec. 25. Targhee's slopes sit almost as high as Jackson Hole's, with top elevation of 10,000. But whereas Jackson Hole is on the lee site of the mountains (it catches storms after they have hit western-facing slopes), Targhee sits in storms' crosshairs. This is why it receives even more snow than the copious amounts that grace Jackson every winter. In addition, Targhee's terrain isn't particularly steep or rocky outside of a few small nooks. This means it requires less snow to get acreage open in the early season at Targhee. Pairing a day or two at Targhee with a holiday trip to Jackson Hole can make for a surefire season opener.

Jackson Hole - early season snow score: 75.7

Our No. 1 ranked ski resort overall is also a stalwart in the early season. This is when Jackson Hole excels, in fact. Its snow conditions peak early, compared with most ski resorts in the North American west—see Jackson's snow graph below. The first thing Jackson Hole has going for it during the early season is that, quite simply, it receives a lot of snow. In the early part of the season, when its colder and darker, Jackson preserves this snow fairly well, and its northerly latitude keeps the sun at a low angle, minimizing its effect. This is why Jackson Hole averages an 82% open rate for its terrain on Dec. 25, a exceptionally high number given the overall steepness of Jackson's slopes—this is a place that requires more snow for good coverage than any other major ski resort in North America. Only 15% of Jackson's winters pass with less than half the ski resort's terrain open on Christmas.

Brighton - early season snow score: 87.9

Positioned at the end of Big Cottonwood Canyon, Brighton harvests snow at a clip that only other Utah resorts can match. Its terrain is mellower than that at next-door neighbor Solitude, which helps it get terrain open more quickly. Brighton averages having 90% of its terrain open on Dec. 25. It's less than half open at Christmas in only 10% of winters. This place is a great bet for destination skiers coming from across the world during the holidays.

Solitude - early season snow score: 83.0

As Brighton's neighbor in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Solitude enjoys the Utah Wasatch snow effect, wherein small storms turn into big ones thanks to the snow trap formed by the west-facing canyon. The west side of the Wasatch is one of the most dependable stretches of mountains for snowfall in the world, and Solitude gets its fair share. The ski resort averages having 85% of its terrain open by the holidays. Only 10% of the time does it have less than half its terrain open on Dec. 25. This is a quiet resort with a wide array of terrain and a good selection of on-mountain lodging, making it a great bet for families seeking a snow-filled holiday trip.

Snowbird - early season snow score: 82.1

Only Alta gets more snow in Utah than Snowbird does. Outside of Alaska, this is the most dependable spot for snow on the continent. Snowbird usually gets covered in generous doses of powder throughout the early season, and it's often fully open by Christmas. On average, it's 84% open on Dec. 25, with only 10% of Christmases passing with less than half of the ski resort's terrain open. These numbers would be even better if Snowbird was less steep. But some of the mountain's excellent terrain requires extra snow for full coverage. Either way, Snowbird and its newly renovated Cliff Lodge could be the best ski-stay combo for powder seekers who want early-season bliss.

Aspen Mountain - early season snow score: 72.1

As the most famous and glitzy mountain in all of skiing, there's a high demand for time on Aspen slopes during the holidays around Christmas and New Year's. Town is packed, the restaurants are full, and Aspen does a great job of getting its original mountain open for the holidays. Thanks to a high elevation, and strategically placed snowmaking, Aspen Mountain averages having 80% of its terrain open at Christmas. Only 17% of its winters see Dec. 25 pass with less than half of the ski resort's terrain open. New Year's eve celebrations in Aspen are a delight, made even more poignant by having a mountain ready to take that eager batch of early-season skiers. Christmas and New Year's ski trips to Aspen are special trips within the world of ski travel.

Mt. Bachelor - early season snow score: 87.9

Oregon's gem of a ski resort, parked on the volcano from which it draws its name, attracts copious amounts of Pacific-borne snow, which it greedily stows away on its glaciers and within its tall stands of Douglas fir. Mt. Bachelor has a fairly high base for the Pacific Northwest, at 5,700 feet, and 55% of its terrain faces north, which helps the resort average a 90%-open rate on Dec. 25. Just as impressive, only 10% of winters see the resort at less than half open on Christmas, making Mt. Bachelor the best bet for the early season in not only Oregon, but also all of the American Northwest.

Park City's depth of terrain and acreage make it a good early season spot.

Park City - early season snow score: 70.2

Ski trips during the early season and Christmas and New Year's holidays to Park City benefit from having access to a ski resort with more acreage—7,300—than any other in the United States. Park City averages a 77% terrain open rate on Dec. 25. But 77% of 7,300 acres is 5,621 acres, which is bigger than Vail. In 20% of winters, Park City is less than half open on Christmas. This is due to the fact that Park City is on the leeward side of the Wasatch, so it typically receives less snow than the ski resorts in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons. But half-open at Park City is still 3,650 acres. Park City skiers have the additional option of scooting over to the other side of the Wasatch for easy day trips to ski Alta, Snowbird, Solitude and Brighton if they so desire.

Beaver Creek - early season snow score: 73.8

Beaver Creek has a special knack for nailing the ambience for any occasion. Its honed reflexes in this department show well for ski trips around Christmas and New Year's. Early-season ski trips to Beaver Creek offer a number of advantages for those seeking a decent snowpack in December. For one, the resort is toward the upper-end of the snow spectrum in the I-70 corridor, as it's on the west side of Vail Pass, which nets it more snow than ski resorts in Summit County. Just as important, 55% of the terrain at Beaver Creek faces north, which helps it preserve anything that falls on its slopes during December, including some strategically-placed snow guns. Beaver Creek averages an 80% terrain open rate on Dec. 25; the ski resort has less than half its terrain open at Christmas only 15% of the time, making it a great bet for destination skiers. Beaver Creek has a deep on-mountain lodging base, and the early-season skiing holidays around Christmas and New Year's are when that lodging is most full and most expensive—so the resort is extra motivated to ensure that the place is eminently skiable.

Beaver Creek sits on the right side of Vail Pass and gets snow early.

Vail - early season snow score: 76.6

The biggest name in skiing seems to pop up on every list, and here it is again. But Vail truly is an early season giant, as its wealth of north-facing terrain and high annual snowfall—359", with an advantageously smaller standard deviation—make it very good bet for skiers betting on snow in late December. Vail averages having 83% of its 5,289 acres open by Dec. 25. And only 15% of winters pass where less than half the ski resort is open on Christmas. Vail Village is overflowing at New Year's, with good reason: there's almost always ample snow and more than enough revelry to go around.

Big Sky - early season snow score: 75.6

Montana is beautiful during late December and early January. Big Sky's northerly latitude gives it low sun angles and lots of cold nights to keep snow well preserved early in the ski season. Big Sky also benefits in the early season from the fact that much of its terrain is low angle and mellow, which means it holds most of the snow that falls on it. This means the place can get white in a hurry—all the better for holiday season skiers. This shows through in the fact that on Dec. 25, Big Sky averages an 80%-open rate on its terrain. Only 13% of its winters see less than half the ski resort's terrain open on Christmas.

Winter Park - early season snow score: 75.2

Winter Park is a well known item of interest to skiers who live in the Denver area. Many locals prefer it because driving here avoids some of the drama that ensues on much of I-70 on Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings. Skiers going to Winter Park have to put up with Berthoud Pass, and a little bit of I-70, but it's generally a smoother operation to get to Winter Park than the ski resorts in Summit County, as well as Vail and Beaver Creek. Many Denver skiers also know that Winter Park is a dependable early-season venue for powder-seeking forays. Winter Park preserves its snow well, and it receives more of it than any ski area in Summit County. This is why the ski resort averages 77% open on Dec. 25, and only 10% of its winters see the resort with less than half its terrain open by the holidays.

Whistler-Blackcomb - early season snow score: 84.0

The behemoth of the British Columbia coastal range is a stalwart of the early season, drawing in storms from the Pacific and hoarding enough snow that the ski resort averages having 86% of its terrain open by Dec. 25. This makes Whistler a fantastic bet when planning a Christmas-New Year's ski trip, or perhaps something even earlier. Whistler's large lodging base means affordable stays can be had during the holidays, even when booked a little later in the fall. (Booking earlier almost always results in lower rates, though!) Whistler's advantageous snow conditions mean than only 10% of its winters see Dec. 25 pass with the ski resort being less than half open, a elite rate.

Whistler catches early winter storms from the Pacific, piling up snow for holiday skiers.

Fernie - early season snow score: 81.2

A trusty member of the inner-BC sanctum, where Pacific Northwest precipitation loads combine with drier air and colder temps to create one of the best environments for snow on the planet, Fernie gives skiers a great option for early season skiing in the Canadian Rockies. Fernie averages an impressive 88% of its terrain open on Dec. 25, all the more impressive because this is fairly steep resort with big long fall lines that require more snow for good coverage. The inner BC snowbelt limits the odds of a bad experience during the holidays, as only 15% of Christmases pass with less than half the terrain at Fernie being open. Fernie, the town, has a number of good dining spots worthy of foodies' attention, as well as some unique lodging options.

Wolf Creek captures snow better than any other ski resort in Colorado.

Wolf Creek - early season snow score: 89.0

We don't have detailed data on Wolf Creek's open rate and averages on Dec. 25, but we do know that this place tends to gather more snow, more quickly, than almost anywhere else in the Rockies. Within Colorado, it's probably the most dependable early-season destination. Wolf Creek benefits from a very high base elevation of 10,600 feet, and a high density of north-facing terrain - 65%. More important than those traits, however, is the fact that Wolf Creek exists in a microclimate that funnels storms to its ridge and wrings them for all they're worth. Wolf Creek can sometimes pick up 20" or more from innocuous systems that leave little snow elsewhere in Colorado. In a hallmark of its early season snow prowess, Wolf Creek is open by Halloween in about a quarter of winters, and averages a 37-inch base at Thanksgiving.

Top 10 Most Popular

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and if you love the mountains as much as we do, there's no better way to spend it than skiing and snowboarding.

With the finest early season snow, calendars crammed with festivities and villages straight from a Christmas Card, these are our favourite resorts for a seriously cool Yule.

Top 10 Christmas Ski Resorts

ski trips christmas 2023

When a ski resort tends to open in November, dreams of a white Christmas become very much a reality. The brilliant snow history owes a little something to the Pissaillas glacier up at 3330m – and most slopes sit above 2500m. With La Daille’s tree trails to seek shelter in and a full 300km to ski in the Espace Killy, Val sees some stonking Christmas schussing. While it has the heights of a purpose built resort, you’ll find all the appeal of an old mountain town: Stone and wood chalets with cascades of little lights along their roofs. The early season start means there’s a serious buzz around Christmas from the get go: Giant floodlit snow sculptures usually line the streets, looking up to grand fireworks displays and fairy-tale torchlight ski shows. Even Santa wouldn't miss the merriment here - eyes peeled for his traditional dash through the snow in that one-horse open sleigh…

Residence Chalet Izia

Nowhere does Noel quite like Mayrhofen: While it's constantly breaking new ground on snow sports, ski area tech and festivals, when it comes to Christmas everything’s charmingly traditional. No inflatable, lit-up Santa’s here - huge wreaths or nativities are the usual centrepieces, found amongst a market selling all manner of trinkets and pastries. No Wham! on repeat either - you’ll usually find a fabulously old-school brass band near the tourist office, where sprogs (and the rest of us when no-one's looking) can send off wish lists at Father Christmas’ post office. Hotels traditionally put on gala dinners but if you’re eating out, try the centuries-old Wirtshauz zum Griena - most parsnips and stuffing can’t hold a candle to their Tiroler grostl. Not that Mayrhofen ever makes it onto the naughty list, but if Santa hasn't delivered the white stuff yet, every last 136km of piste can be covered with artificial snow.

Elisabeth Hotel

While the rest of the world sing carols of The Three Kings, there’s a different trio they chant from the rooftops here - The Three Valleys. Hogging the heart of the world’s biggest linked ski area with a sea of old-style wood and stone buildings, Meribel is adored by British skiers at this time of year. There's uber-easy access to the 600km of groomers, including the ones in swanky Courchevel and diddy St Martin de Belleville (which looks straight out of a snow globe). Christmas here is traditionally celebrated with all manner of festivities: Torch lit descents, firework displays, carols in the main square and vin chaud galore - stick around to see if Santa visits in his horse drawn sleigh… And with more chalet accommodation than you can shake a bauble at, hosts are known to prepare traditional spreads on the big day for one and all.

Chalet L'Ancolie

Zermatt begins to look a lot like Christmas as soon as the first flakes fall, often in November. And if good conditions are at the top of your wish list, this is Europe’s highest ski area, where everything from glaciers to forest runs keep the mountains deliciously white. Get the international pass and you can ski all the way over to Cervinia in Italy, for proper pizzas on the mountainside (worlds away from that Christmas Eve Dominos...). The village itself is a feast for the eyes - Swiss wood and stone buildings, one horse open sleighs, ice-skating on the lake and the mighty Matterhorn looming overhead (Chocolaterie Laderach’s diddy chocolate versions don’t always make it to the stockings…). But the real feasts here come in the restaurants - book Capri or After Seven for a Michelin-Starred banquet that’ll blow all other Christmas dinners out of the water.

Le Mirabeau Hotel & Spa

Zell is pretty stunning at the best of times, but Christmas takes it to a whole new level. The centre hosts one of the finest markets in all the land: With woodwork, toys, baked goods and Gluhwein by the gallon, the chaos of Christmas shopping at home will be a distant memory. We love a Boxing Day walk along the lake, which traditionally has a throng of sparkling stars floating on its surface. With most beds based in hotels, the week can be as chilled and relaxing as it should be. No decorating, cooking or cleaning will leave you plenty of time to explore the good stuff: 138km of pistes between the local Schmitten mountain, the Maiskogel by Kaprun and the fabulously snow sure Kitzsteinhorn glacier.

Salzburger Hof

Santa might pop in to visit the other ski resorts, but he actually LIVES in Lapland - which has all the makings of a week you won’t be forgetting in a hurry. Visit the man himself at Rovaniemi’s Santa Park, or get the elves to show you his secret grotto in the woods. Reindeer farms and sleigh rides send the festive factor into overdrive - but that’s just the start of the wonderlandish activities here: The likes of husky-sleds and snowmobiles take you far out into other-worldly wilderness. 67.8 degrees north in the Arctic Circle, the nippy climate brings fabulous snow conditions. Fill stockings with an extra layer of thermals so you can really make the most of the slopes, which are dotted with fire pits and warming huts to keep things cosy. The icing on the Christmas Cake? If the skies are clear enough you might spot the Northern Lights.

Design Hotel Levi

Cham's grand Savoyard buildings are cloaked in fairy lights come Christmas, with the whole spectacle topped off by the surrounding Mont Blanc massif. In the snow department, St Nick’s known to deliver: Especially in the Grans Montets area, where altitudes of 3300m and the closeness of the Argentière glacier help provide good cover at the beginning of the season. Though managing to ski all day can be a challenge with so much going on: Christmas Eve is traditionally marked with big street parades and carol concerts, with Santa famously arriving on Le Train du Pere Noel - or on skis, in a torch lit descent into town. The restaurants tend to go all out too, with festive menus of champagne and traditional nosh. For a real yuletide treat, visit the Ice Cave via the wonderfully old-school pinion cog-railway.

Residence Cristal de Jade

Morzine’s always marvellous for families, and Christmastime is no exception. The transfer’s a short hour and half, letting you really make the most of the festivities… And if recent years are anything to go by, the event calendar will be fit to bursting: A dazzling Ice Show, firework displays, choirs and Santa’s arrival in the square would leave even the Scroogiest feeling jolly. If you’re staying in a catered chalet (there are tons here) you’ll most likely return home to a traditional lunch on the big day - or book a table at Le Clin d’Oeil, where a certain merry fellow’s known to pop by after his round the world tour… You’re not short of treats on the slopes either. The local pistes cover grassland so only need around 20cm of snow to be skiable (though they usually get lots more). With gorgeous tree-lined skiing and the stonking great 650km Portes du Soleil on your doorstep, you’re bound to find many a slope in fine fettle.

Hotel Les Champs Fleuris

The Dolomite peaks make you feel like a speck on the wintry horizon, then the town itself treats you like a king. Wander Cortina’s fairy-lit streets where Tyrolean goodies traditionally fill the market stalls: Food, wooden toys and handmade candles sit alongside Corso Italia’s iconic boutiques, which normally stay open late in December for any last minute stocking fillers. A grand tree sits in the main square, where you can usually catch a horse-drawn sleigh ride for a clip clop around the town. Even if all you did was ski, you’d have a cracking Christmas here: The local lift pass covers 140km of the most staggeringly pretty terrain, and you can explore more with the Superski pass and its 1200km of pistes. On a clear day, wrap up warm and watch the mountains change colour as the sun sets – look closely and you might just spot Santa on the horizon…

Hotel Montana

Place Centrale is a glorious hub of Christmas trees and overflowing cheer at this time of year. Santa usually appears on Christmas Eve, handing out gifts for the sprogs and vin chaud for grown-ups. Gospel concerts fill the air, and church masses continue age-old traditions. With links to the 4 Valleys and the makings for terrific early-season conditions, the skiing’s just as spiffing: A heavenly host of high slopes on the glacier, sheltered tree runs and hundreds of snow cannons for back up. Most catered chalets will have all the trimmings ready for your return from the hill. But if you want to spend Christmas in serious style, W Café do a smashing turkey supper - you can even take it away if you’re self-catering. But beyond all else, this place knows how to put on a Christmas Party - Farinet, Farm Club and Pub Mont Fort throw the biggest bashes in the Alps with seasonal themes and showers of champers to celebrate.

Chalet Marmottière

We’ve selected the top Xmas ski resorts from those best known for putting on a Yuletide to remember. In recent years, Meribel has pulled out all the stops with events for all ages. Zermatt is a feast for the eyes at this time of year and the lively Sno lovers in our office rate St Anton for the Christmas partying of your life - there’s never a dull moment in that hedonist’s heaven. It’s worth remembering that the places which made it onto this “Best Of” list are known to all as the best places to ski and celebrate. Best advice is to book your Christmas holiday early if you want to spend a very cool Yule in the likes of Val d’Isere or Verbier.

If there’s a particular vibe you prefer, each of the skiing nations has a different approach to celebrating the festive season. The resorts in French tend to have lots of organised events, Austria and Switzerland are more traditional and the Italian resorts are all about great food, family and relaxation.

Best US Ski Resorts for Christmas

Solitude, salt lake city, utah.

Stay At: The Inn at Solitude

If you’re looking to visit somewhere that’s got a fantastic combination of a big city AND skiing, then head to Salt Lake City, Utah.  From the airport, it’s only 30 minutes to Solitude, our family favorite ski resort in Utah making this one of the best Christmas ski resorts.  It’s a family friendly ski resort where there are plenty of fun trails for the kids, but when Mom and Dad want to take a few runs solo, we can get right to some of the steepest skiing in the US, and enjoy Utah’s legendary powder snow, right away.

kids skiing solitude

Solitude is a great Christmas ski resort since the kids can get to get out and ski with Santa on Christmas day (since he obviously earned a vacation too after all his hard work), and if you stay at their village, you’ll not only enjoy their Christmas atmosphere, but you’ll also be pretty sure you’ll have a White Christmas.

From Solitude Resort in Big Cottonwood Canyon, it’s only a short drive into downtown Salt Lake City which is absolutely magical at Christmas.  Temple Square absolutely cannot be missed as there are an estimated 1 million Christmas lights that light up the trees and grounds.  Our kids look forward to seeing the lights there every year and enjoying the music and nativity presentations as well.  After you check out the lights, head across the street to City Creek to see the famous candy window displays.  If you’re looking for a big night out, check out Ballet West’s Nutcracker as well.  Whatever you do, before you leave Salt Lake, make sure to head up the hill to Hatch Family Chocolates for the best hot chocolate EVER!

Make sure to stick around Solitude for their great New Years celebrations that include magic shows and a torchlight parade. Make sure to check out our Ultimate Guide to Solitude Resort for everything you need to know before you visit. Want to visit another Utah ski resort at Christmas? Big Sky, Montana

Stay At: The Summit Hotel

Big Sky is one of the largest ski resorts in the US, but the thing that most people don’t know is that it’s also one of the least crowded, with lift lines often being nonexistent.  This makes it the perfect place to ski at Christmas when most resorts are overrun with vacationers – Big Sky is one of the least crowded ski resorts at Christmas.

ski trips christmas 2023

Since Big Sky is such a huge resort, it really does have something for EVERY skier – A LOT of something for everyone.  The resort is over 5,500 acres and almost half of that is beginner and intermediate terrain.  Combine that amount of terrain with a lack of crowds and it’s a perfect place for a family ski holiday.  They’re are tons of trails that are specifically designed for kids as well to not only help them learn to ski better, but to help them have a ton of fun while doing it.

Big Sky is a fantastic place to spend your Christmas ski holiday if you’re looking for a chance to get away from it all and really just enjoy time together as a family in the mountains.  On Christmas Eve there is a torchlight parade, a skiing Santa, and even fireworks.  You can also schedule a night skiing tour where a guide will take you skiing by headlamp, which sounds absolutely amazing (especially since the chairlift is HEATED).

Every Saturday night, enjoy s’mores in the Village and a rescue dog demonstration while you sit by the campfire.  While you’re in Big Sky at Christmas make sure to also head for a sleigh ride, take a fat bike tour, or go dog sledding, because if it involves winter, you’re pretty sure to find it at Big Sky.

Park City, Utah

Stay At: Marriott Mountainside Resort

Park City is home to the mega Park City Mountain Resort, and the skiers only Deer Valley making it one of the best places for skiing on Christmas.  It’s got all the conveniences of Salt Lake City (including being only 45 minutes from the airport), tucked into a mountain town.  Both resorts offer a variety of terrain, though Deer Valley is geared more towards the luxury skier and Park City is geared more towards extreme skiers and families.  If you want a cute ski town, head to Park City, but be warned that the Christmas ski crowds in Park City are horrible. This is the best place to go for a ski town with a small dose of skiing on the side.

READ: Planning A Magical Park City Christmas

boy skiing through trees

From downtown Park City, you can take a lift ride straight up to the resort, and with their free shuttle system, you probably don’t even need to rent a car.

Downtown Park City is magical at Christmas time, and you could happily spend an evening strolling, shopping, and eating.  If you’ve got kids don’t forget to take them to Java Cow for some great ice cream and hot chocloate (yes, you’ll want BOTH).  Park City is one of the best ski towns at Christmas for families.

From December 20 – January 5, Park City hosts their annual Snowfest where there are festive events every day including live music, fireworks, a torchlight parade, visits from Santa and more.  While you’re in Park City for Christmas, I’d also recommend taking a sleigh ride, going ice skating, and then heading to nearby Heber City for a ride on the festive Heber Creeper train.  While you’re in Heber this winter , make sure to check out the Midway Ice Castles for a super unique and magical experience, as well as Soldier Hollow for tubing and cross country skiing! If you’re looking for the best family Christmas ski vacation, Park City has a bit of everything to make your family ski trip extra magical.

Beaver Creek ,  Avon, Colorado

Stay At: Park Hyatt Beaver Creek

Beaver Creek, Colorado is an amazing Christmas ski resort for families, and at Christmas there’s no better place to be. Nestled in the Vail Valley two hours west of Denver, Beaver Creek is paradise for both beginner and advanced skiers alike.

The mountain’s extensive network of green and blue runs makes it one of the most kid-friendly ski resorts in the Rocky Mountains. Unlike many ski resorts where beginners are confined to a lower bunny hill, Beaver Creek’s vast upper green runs offer long, wide terrain to ski from the mountain top to bottom. Beaver Creek’s newly opened Haymeadow Park and Red Buffalo Park provide a perfect learning ground, both in ski school or skiing together as a family. Another reason to love Beaver Creek –every afternoon chefs in white ski suits serve warm chocolate chip cookies at the foot of the slopes.

ski trips christmas 2023

Particularly around the Christmas skiing holiday, there are so many great things to do in Beaver Creek for families. You’ll find the Dickens-worthy Beaver Creek Village dressed to the nines in its holiday best, providing a festive ambiance to celebrate the holidays. Take the kids for a visit with Santa, go ice skating on the center rink, then cozy up by the fire pit while carolers make the rounds singing your favorite Christmas songs. Cap off your Christmas at Beaver Creek by taking a sleigh ride up the mountain to a cozy dinner at Allie’s Cabin, then join the community to watch the fireworks light up the slopes. If you enjoy luxury, Beaver Creek is one of the best places to ski at Christmas.

Mt Bachelor, Sunriver Resort, Oregon

Stay At: Tetherow Resort

Mt Bachelor is a great place for a Christmas ski vacation, especially for families.  Since it’s actually a dormant volcano, the chutes and terrain are incredibly unique.  Not to mention the rollers that kids will absolutely love, giving many of the runs a bit of a roller coaster feel!  Also, if parents purchase their lift tickets in advance, kids under 12 can ski for FREE!!

ski trips christmas 2023

If you’re skiing at Mt Bachelor in Oregon, I highly recommend choosing Sunriver Resort as your home base.

Around Christmas, Sunriver puts on holiday events to make the season extra special. Horse-drawn sleigh rides and Gingerbread Junction – a gallery of gingerbread houses – are ongoing through December. The resort also hosts events like Christmas movie screenings, holiday sky viewing parties, and a New Years bonfire. Plus, there’s always a high probability that you’ll enjoy a White Christmas at Sunriver (something which can’t be said about the rest of the State)!

Sunriver Resort is a great one of the largest and most well known Central Oregon vacation destinations, just 20 minutes from beautiful Mt. Bachelor. The small town of Sunriver, Oregon has its own grocery, shopping, art galleries, and coffee shops, not to mention multiple fitness centers, lodges, golf courses, walking trails, etc. Skiing, snowboarding, sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and ice skating are all popular winter activities in the area. All of these combine for the perfect low key Christmas ski trip.

Canada is a great option for a ski trip at Christmas since the colder temperatures up north often mean better early season snow conditions. We’ve compiled a list of the best Canadian Chrismas resorts for you!

Whistler, British Columbia, Canada

Stay At: Fairmont Chateau Whistler

The mountain resort at Whistler, British Columbia is the perfect ski resort to visit at Christmas!  A just a short two-hour drive from Vancouver, visiting Whistler is the perfect addition to your family vacation in Vancouver for the best Christmas skiing.

skiing whistler

Nestled in the Coastal Mountains of beautiful British Columbia , Whistler is one of the world’s premier ski destinations, and it really knows how to do Christmas right.  It is so unapologetically festive that even a real Grinch would enjoy it!

Whistler sets up an outdoor rink at Whistler Olympic Plaza with festive holiday music, twinkly lights and lots of snow.  Family Après is the perfect go-to for families after the slopes close for the day.  With tobogganing, live entertainment and hot chocolate, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The Whistler Conference Centre is transformed during the holidays into a kids playground, with holiday crafts, bouncy castles and a myriad of ways for kids to enjoy themselves.  Parents can relax in the lounge while kids play and (hopefully!) wear themselves out. Don’t forget to check out the Whistler tree lighting.

A Christmas sleigh ride is one of the best things about Whistler at Christmas, or Whistler on Boxing Day.  You can ride in a one or two-horse open sleigh.  Great for a night out with the kids or a romantic evening with your sweetie.  Also, don’t miss Santa’s workshop at Creekside, complete with a great gingerbread house.

Of course, skiing with Santa is a kid favorite at a ski resort.  If you dress up as Santa or Mrs. Claus, you might be able to ski for free.  Don’t miss the mass Santa run down to Emerald Chair. This is hands down the best Christmas ski resort in Canada.

Lake Louise , Alberta, Canada

Stay At: Lake Louise Inn

Located within Banff National Park, you will find the stunning Lake Louise Ski Resort, one of the largest ski resorts in North America.  It is a very family-friendly mountain that’s perfect for a snow holiday with terrain for every one, from cruisy green runs to the challenging back bowls and glades.  They have a fantastic ski school with instructors from all over the world.

ski trips christmas 2023

There is limited accommodation options in Lake Louise since it is a National Park.  If you want to experience this winter wonderland setting, staying at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is worth every penny.   This historic hotel is nestled in the mountains right on Lake Louise.  In addition to skiing at the Lake Louise Ski Resort, there are a myriad of winter activities to explore.  It is a truly magical experience.

One of the highlights is a grand ice castle built on the Lake.  It is like stepping into a real life snow globe where you can ice skate around the castle and warm up with a hot drink at the ice bar.  You can take a sleigh ride around the lake, go tobogganing, go cross-country skiing, snowshoe across the Lake, making this one of the best family ski resorts at Christmas.

During the month of December you can see Santa on the slopes at Lake Louise Ski Resort, where he will pose for photos at designated times.  The Chateau Lake Louise is decorated to the nines with Christmas trees and decorations.  You can even request a Christmas tree in your guest room.  Activities include campfires, Christmas craft workshops, story time and movie nights.  On December 24th, Santa arrives at the Chateau by sleigh for a very memorable Christmas Eve.  Spending Christmas holidays at Lake Louise is a once-in-a-lifetime magical experience and an amazing holiday ski resort

Sasquatch Moutain Resort, Hemlock Valley, BC, Canada

Stay At: Bear Behind Lodge

Sasquatch Mountain Resort (formerly Hemlock Valley Resort) is nestled about 2 hours drive from Vancouver and is a great place for a ski holiday. A small mountain in comparison to nearby Whistler, it is great for families who want to spend a week skiing at Christmas and want to be able to stay on the mountain. Whether condos or homes, there are plenty of options for rentals, making it a great winter getaway for Christmas, especially if you live in British Columbia.

christmas skiing at sasquatch

I would say that this is a beginner ski mountain, so all you experts, head to Whistler to get bang for your buck. If you want a great ski atmosphere and friendly people, Sasquatch is a great choice for a quiet ski Christmas. They have loads of fun activities over the holiday from Tree Lighting to Costume Contests and they cater to families. I love that kids under 5 ski for free! This is a great reason to get little ones on the slopes! Sasquatch Mountain also has a tube park and a fun pub for some Apres Ski!

There is no grocery store on the hill, the closest one is about 30 minutes away. A vehicle is required as there is no transit options and make sure you have 4×4 and carry chains. This mountain really caters to those who call Metro Vancouver home, but that does not mean that out-of-towners cannot come and enjoy what it has to offer! Check out the events calendar to see what they have in store this holiday season.

Mt Seymour,  Vancouver, Canada

Stay At: The Pinnacle Hotel

Mt Seymour is the perfect place to hit the slopes during the holiday season for a few different reasons. First of all, its location is absolutely ideal. From Vancouver city center it is only a short 30-minute drive to the very top of Mt Seymour. This means that you can stay in the heart of one of Canada’s most vibrant cities and enjoy all of the best things to do in Vancouver when you’re not up in the mountains! What more could you want from a Christmas ski resort?

ski trips christmas 2023

Mt Seymour is also perfect for families on a budget as ski passes are very affordable in comparison to most ski resorts in North America. They offer special rates for those who come after 2 pm or those who come after 5 pm. Adult day passes are priced as low as $36 CAD and kids between the ages of 5-12 passes start at only $21 CAD! So, if all those Christmas presents have you’re strapped for cash, you can still manage a day out on the slopes with your family.

The festive season is especially exciting at Mt Seymour as they prepare for their annual family-friendly New Year’s Eve event. Each year Mt Seymour brings lights and entertainment for families on NYE. Expect tobogganing, snow showing, face painting, crafts, live music and entertainment, and of course, fireworks! The event runs from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm making it early enough for those with young children . It is a ticketed event that sells out almost every year, so be sure to get your ticket in advance, to add that to your best ski Christmas holiday!

Sunshine Village,  Alberta, Canada

Stay At: Sunshine Mountain Lodge

Sunshine Village resort located in Alberta Canada may provide some of the best nostalgic Christmas vibes you can imagine. This fun Christmas ski resort is family-friendly and nestled in the Canadian Rockies which provides some amazing skiing and snowboarding terrain. The kids will love the gondola ride up to the main ski area and a heated chair lift too! The resort is set up with kids ski lessons, daycare, rentals and food services at the resort. In the past, Sunshine Village had promos to ski for free if you dress up as Santa, Mrs. Claus or Rudolf if you are up for some fun on the slopes and want to enjoy a skiing Santa moment.

christmas skiing sunshine village

You can either stay at the resort or stay at the world-renowned city of Banff which is only a 20-minute drive from Sunshine Village. Banff is probably where you will most likely spend your time off the slopes or on rest days. Enjoy all the Christmas festivities that Banff has to offer with the hotels, streets and shops which are all geared up for Christmas. Sleigh rides, Christmas lights, hot chocolate, beaver tails (a Canadian version of a donut) and so much more. Usually, each of the hotels has a line up of special activities going on for kids and families to participate in or entertainment. Sunshine Village and the Canadian Rockies will give you a special white Christmas and get you into the holiday spirit in this winter wonderland.

Best Ski Resorts for Christmas in Europe

If you’re taking a Christmas ski trip, there are few places that are more charming that Europe! You’ll get a traditional holiday ski trip, and you can easily combine that with visits to Christmas markets and fiars, for a truly memorable family ski trip!

Kitzbuhel, Austria

Stay At: Hotel Kaiserhoff

Our friend Lee might be slightly biased since he learned to ski there but Kitzbuhel, a little town nestled in the Austrian alps, is the best ski resort to visit around Christmas time. Why, you might ask? It not only offers some of the best skiing in Austria but the picturesque, cobbled stone streets of the town come to life from the end of November, as the Christmas market pops up and a veritable feast of festive activities commence. This is one of the best European ski resorts at Christmas!

kitsbuhel austria

Kitzbuhel’s ski slopes might not be the best for beginner adult skiers, as the pistes are more geared towards those who can make their way down a red or black-flagged run. However, the ski schools are perfect for kids and the number of activities for children (and grown-ups alike), make this the ideal winter wonderland.

The ski Christmas market, hosted through the main streets of the village, is cozy and convivial – you’ll brush shoulders with locals downing mugs of mulled wine while also enjoying the typical treats of reibekuchen (potato cakes), lebekuchen (gingerbread in chocolate) and Austrian sausage. The town comes alive with campfires for kids, storytelling nights at the museum and the petting zoo is a marvel all year round. Particularly great for the young ones is that during the Advent season, the streets become a walkable Advent calendar as a new themed window is opened each night along the main alleyways! The nearby Rasmushof farm also hosts a Christmas alley, with 40 towering fir trees made up as Christmas trees; a twinkling, beautiful sight for anyone visiting the town.

Les Arcs, Auvergne Rhône Alps, France

Stay At: Aiguille Grive

Les Arcs is part of the Paradiski ski area, the second-largest ski resort in the world. Accessible from Lyon and Geneva, the resort is unique as it has several sites ranging from 1600-2000 meters all in one destination. Additionally, Les Arcs has 262 runs over a multitude of pistes, ensuring everyone from beginners to enthusiasts can enjoy this winter wonderland!

ski trips christmas 2023

For those looking for a white Christmas, Les Arcs is the perfect European ski holiday . There’s plenty going on to keep the whole family happy, and each of the 5 villages hold après ski events. Everything from firework displays, sledge rides, snowman building contests, and reindeer visits. There is even a Christmas Marshmallow party, followed by a fabulous street parade and an opportunity to visit an igloo ice bar.

The most unique Christmas ski event has to be the traditional torchlit descent. Up to 100 children ski down the flood-lit slopes led by instructors to meet Santa Claus at the bottom. For the parents, expect hot chocolate, vin chaud (mulled wine), candy canes and gingerbread whilst you wait for your excited children to return.

If one Santa visit isn’t enough, get in contact with the tourist office and they may even be able to arrange for Father Christmas to visit your ski chalet!

Wengen,  Switzerland

Stay At: Arenas Resort

If you’re looking for a great little ski resort village for the family at Christmas, the small village of Wengen in the Jungfrau region makes a great spot.  Wengen is a car free village, so families can walk around safely without being concerned about traffic.  Plus it’s just magical in Wengen at Christmas with lovely decorations lining the streets and there usually is a Christmas market on into town too.

christmas skiing wengen

Wengen itself doesn’t have a lot of slopes, but it is a great place to learn as there a range of snow schools in Wengen as well as some smaller ski slopes which are perfect for both skiing and sledding.   There are two different ski schools in the village and children can learn to ski safely in the beginners area – children as young as 3 can participate. This is a great Swiss ski resort for Christmas since the charm is everywhere.

However, if you’re skills are a little more advanced or once you get a little more confident there are 206 kilometers of ski slopes around Wengen in the nearby areas of Grindelwald-First, Kleine Scheidegg-Mannlichen and Murren-Schilthron.  Combined these regions have over 200kms of ski slopes and 70kms of sled runs.  All areas are easy to reach from Wengen via a combination of cog rail and cable cars.

You can hire everything you need including snow gear right from within the Wengen Village.   Even if you’re kids aren’t really into skiing, you can hire a sled as there are plenty of little hills around the place perfect for it.

Also when you’ve had enough of skiing there are plenty of great family activities and day trips in the surrounding area including going to the top of Schilthorn and Jungraujoch.

Civetta Ski Region, Italy

Stay At: Anteleo Dolimiti

Civetta Ski Region is wrapped around the Civetta Mountain and consist of four locations: Zoldo, Palafavera, Alleghe, and Selva di Cadore. Our pick for a place to stay was Val di Zoldo, a small town in the province of Belluno at the feet of Civetta Mountain.

Christmas skiing Civetta Ski Region

We have visited the Civetta Region in February 2019 with the whole family. Clear sky, sun shining, great weather, perfect food and relax – those are the reasons why each year we choose Italy as the place for winter holidays.

The biggest enthusiasts of Civetta are our kids – they love this place as the slopes are not too demanding. In total, you will find there 22 lifts and 72 kilometers of slopes. Majority of tracks are blue, few red ones, and 4 black slopes for skilled skiers. Honestly, I think that even the red slopes are not too demanding. The best recommendation comes from my daughter. She is just a beginner, and she had no problems with skiing on all tracks. No fear – just great fun. This helped her to increase her skills.

Just to wrap up – Civetta Ski Region has beautiful views, great ski tracks and it’s not so crowded as other Italian resorts. If you hate crowded ski resorts, this place is perfect for you.

Val di Sole,  Trentino, Italy

Stay At: Hotel Val Di Sole

Val di Sole is a beautiful valley located in Trentino, in northern Italy, that is perfect for a winter holiday and one of the best destinations for ski lovers. December is a perfect month to visit, as that’s when snow starts falling regularly. This means that the slopes get excellent quality snow that make it perfect for skiing or snowboarding, and the whole area gets a beautiful, fairy-tale atmosphere.

CHristmas ski val di sole

Val di Sole counts on a whopping 150 km of slopes of varying length and difficulty, most of them connected one to the other. Scattered throughout the slopes you’ll find a series of “rifugi” which are perfect places to stop for a meal or a drink (make sure to try bombardino, a thick, creamy drink that is guaranteed to boost your energy level).

Speaking of food – like in the rest of Trentino, food in Val di Sole is absolutely delicious. Among the dishes you should try there are canederli – sort of bread and sausage dumplings served in broth. Make sure to spend a day at Agritur Solasna, where enrolling in a cooking class will allow you to learn to master the art of making canederli and other local specialties in a cozy local environment.

Val di Sole villages become incredibly atmospheric at Christmas, with markets and shops beautifully adorned for the celebrations. The nicest one is by far Ossana, where nativity scenes of all styles and dimensions are scattered around the village.

Levi Ski Resort, Kittilä, Finland

Stay At: Break Sokos

Levi Ski Resort, located above the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland, is a true winter wonderland. The skiing in Levi is really unique, as the slopes are lit by floodlights, due to the short daylight hours in the winter months. It usually isn’t crowded, making it a great place for kids and families to learn how to ski. Sledding is also available, and ski instructors are very experienced in teaching children, as Levi is such a popular European ski destination for families.

Christmas skiing Levi

There are so many fun activities to do in the area, including reindeer sleigh rides, a visit to a husky farm, 4WDing through the snow, and Christmas dinners, where guests can meet Santa himself. The region is also home to the Sami people, and there are many opportunities to learn about the traditional arts and crafts, culture, and history of the Sami, so do include that on any trip to the region. The whole area, including the village, really feel like you’ve stepped into Santa’s homeland- wooden cabins dripping with icicles, log fires, and a festive atmosphere that families and kids of any age will love.

Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau, Tyrol, Austria

Stay At: Alpbach Lodge Chalet

The Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau in the Austrian Tyrol is one where family memories are made at Christmas. Not only does it offer great family-friendly skiing, but all the off-piste elements for a wonderful Christmas holiday too.

Christmas skiing Alpbachtal Wildschönau

The village of Alpbach, at the centre of the Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski region, has been named Austria’s prettiest more than once. At Christmas, the town with its unique stone and wood chalets is turned into a winter wonderland by festive lights and snow-capped mountain peaks. If you’re really lucky, it may snow right down in the village too.

Getting to the ski runs from Alpbach is easy via a free ski bus to the gondola stations. You are spoiled for choice between the Alpbach and the Wildschönau ski areas, both accessible from one lift station at Inner Alpbach.

Small kids will love the practice slopes and the fun park on the Alpbach side of the Ski Juwel. You can also book them into a ski school where they are entertained and fed while you enjoy some time alone with your partner. And for a break in skiing, there are some great sled runs to try.

In the evenings, various activities are organised for guests staying in Alpbach. How does a hike by lantern light sound, or drinking a glass of Glühwein or punch in a romantic Christmas market atmosphere? In Austria, the Christkind or Christ Child brings the presents on Christmas Eve. If you’re lucky, you may even see the angelic figure arriving or leaving!

Best Resorts in Asia for Christmas Skiing

Ski dubai , dubai, uae.

Stay At: Hilton Garden Inn

Finding Christmas in the Middle East can be a bit of a chore, but ski Dubai is an absolute MUST if you’re in the Middle East around Christmas.  From their penguin experiences, to skiing and tubing, it’s a true gem.  What’s it like skiing at Ski Dubai?  Well first off, you must know that Ski Dubai is located inside of a giant mall, the Mall of the Emirates.  It’s got 2 chairlifts as well as a surface lift.  Because it is really small, you probably don’t need to ski for the entire day, but I’d recommend skiing for a few hours and then taking some time to go tubing or see the penguins.

skiing family ski dubai uae

With your admission, you get a helmet, ski rentals, and a jumpsuit, so the only thing that you need to bring is your own gloves (you can purchase them there as well).  We put our younger kids in ski school, and since the slope was really gentle, it was a great experience for them and they felt like they could really ski.  The instructors were kind and encouraging which is exactly what you hope for when kids are just starting out.

The biggest surprise for me was the snow – it felt REAL! Now, the snow at Ski Dubai is obviously artificial and isn’t going to be soft and powdery, but it felt very similar to early spring skiing, back at a resort in the Rockies, so that was an exciting surprise. Ski Dubai is the best Christmas activity in the UAE, and this is one of the most unique Christmas ski resorts in the world.

The Vintage, Gulmarg India

The Vintage Gulmarg is nestled in the Himalayas, just 50 km from Srinagar which is the nearest airport. From Srinagar, you can get a regular taxi service to Gulmarg. Gulmarg is famous for skiing in India and other snow-related activities. The Vintage Gulmarg is a 4-star luxury hotel providing luxurious rooms and suites with a spectacular view of the Apharwat mountain range and Gulmarg Golf course. They provide various snow activities like Skiing and Snow-boarding, Ice-Skating, Gondola ride, and Heli-Skiing. They have a lounge to enjoy a game of cards and a gift shop to buy souvenirs. The hand-made Kashmiri shawl is a unique gift. They have four restaurants with sitting areas in the garden and terrace. They have in-house spa facilities too.

vintage india skiing

Some places nearby to the resorts are Khilanmarg, Alpathar Lake, Maharani Temple, and St. Mary’s Church. During Christmas Snow Carnival of Gulmarg is a major attraction. The whole place is decorated with lights, small shops and markets, gaming stall, huge Santas and many snow activities like yak safari, snowmobile riding. There are cultural and musical shows for the tourists too. The ski resort at Christmas also has Christmas parties and New Year Gala. The ambiance and hospitality of the place are amazing you would have a great Christmas with your family. They also have an in-house Christmas tree and gifts distribution. There is also a church nearby if you wish to pray and spend time there.

What to expect when skiing at Christmas?

When you take a Christmas ski trip, there are a few things that will be very different than skiing at other times of the year. The first thing that you’ll notice is that Christmas ski resort prices are higher. You’ll oay more for Christmas lift tickets, Christmas ski town lodging, and even Christmas snow activities.

The other thing that’s different about skiing at Christmas are the crowds. Skiing at Christmas is the most crowded time of year to ski. In fact, if you’re skiing with young kids, I recommend NOT skiing at Christmas, or skiing the week before Christmas instead of after (the week before Christmas is usally much less crowded). When you ski in Christmas crowds, make sure to put a plan in place if you get separated and have designated meeting points in case people get lost. I also recommend dressing kids in bright kids ski coats so that they’re easy to find if they get lost (and take a picture of them in the morning, in case you need to show it to others to help you find a lost child on skis).

How To Save Money Skiing at Christmas?

One of the best ways to save money on a Christmas ski holiday is to find cheaper lift tickets. Often it’s cheaper to buy a season ski pass in the fall than to pay Christmas lift ticket prices (just make sure that you get a pass that isn’t blacked out on the days you want to ski). If you don’t want to pay for a season pass, then I recommend skipping the big ski resorts. If you ski at a small ski resort at Christmas you’ll not only have less crowds, but the prices will be cheaper as well.

When is the best time to book a Christmas ski trip?

It’s best to book a Christmas ski trip as early as possible, ideally 6-8 months in advance. Christmas is a peak period for ski resorts, so accommodations and amenities fill up quickly. Early bookings might also secure better deals on lodging and other reservations. Make sure to also reserve your spots in ski school as early as possible!

Will there be guaranteed snow during Christmas?

Unfortunately, snow is a variable that resorts have no control over. Some years, you’ll have 6 feet of snow, and other years you’ll only have 6 inches. It’s something outside of most resort’s control, so if you’re worried about a resort not having now at Christmas, go somewhere with colder temperatures and good snowmaking abilities.

Should I book Ski-In Ski-Out Accommodations at Christmas?

Absolutely YES! Christmas at a ski resort is magical, but things can get crowded and hectic on the roads. By booking ski-in Ski-out lodging, you can assure that you can avoid some of that chaos, by just going straight to and from your room after your ski day. I highly recommend booking your ski-in ski-out lodging as early as possible since it nearly always sells out.

Many resorts offer ski-in/ski-out accommodations for direct slope access. These are often in high demand, so book early. They provide convenience but might be pricier than off-slope lodgings.

How Do We Prevent Altitude Sickness During a Ski Trip?

The best way to prevent altitude sickness is to gradually ease into activity once you arrive at the resort. Take a day or 2 to have mild to moderate activity. Stay well hydrated and sleep plenty. Whatever you do, don’t ski on your first day at the resort if you’re coming from a much lower altitude.

Are There Package Deals To Save Money?

Many ski resorts have some sort of package deal where you can get lessons, rentals, and lift tickets at a reduced price. Other lodging might offer discounts on restaurants if you stay on site. Generally if you’re looking for deals to save money, it’s best to ski at another time of year besides Christmas when crowds are less and resorts are more incentivized to provide deals.

Should Beginners Take Ski Lessons at Christmas?

If you’re a beginning skier, taking a ski lesson is always the best idea. However, ski school during the Christmas holiday is usually overcrowded and busy. We highly recommend trying to do a small ski trip before Christmas, taking a few lessons, and just enjoying the Christmas ski trip without the ski school crowds.

There you have it – some of the absolute best ski resorts to spend Christmas at this year. It’s a guaranteed way to add some magic and fun to your holiday this year!

HOLIDAYS IN THE MOUNTAINS

Skiing or snowboarding is an excellent way to spend your holiday vacation . Just about every ski resort goes above and beyond to make the holidays a special experience—glittering Christmas lights line village shops, families ice skate under the stars, seasonal music rings through the streets, and fireworks dazzle wide-eyed onlookers. Oh, and did we mention skiing Santas?

So no matter if you’re celebrating Christmas, Hannukah, Diwali, Kwanza, or simply looking to ring in the New Year in style, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite resorts for skiing during the holiday season. Here we go…

Aspen Snowmass , Colorado

Aspen at Christmas

When it comes to picturesque holiday destinations, Aspen, CO is about as good as it gets. Featuring plenty of Christmas concerts, on-mountain festivities, and above all: a reliable snowpack, Aspen Snowmass provides an incredible mountain setting for the holidays.

Adults will revel in exciting after-hours events at Theater Aspen while the kids will never forget activities like on-mountain scavenger hunts and Santa sleigh rides. Besides a never-ending list of things to do, Aspen is also the perfect place to unwind in peace. The spas at the Viceroy and Little Nell are some of the best in the world and Aspen’s relative remoteness and 4 distinct mountains allow skiers and riders to move freely on the slopes.

Vail , Colorado

Vail New Year's Eve Fireworks, Vail NYE Fireworks, Vail Fireworks

Vail ’s Tyrolian-inspired villages shine brightly each night of the holiday season and everything from the skiing to the boutique shopping makes Colorado’s largest ski resort also one of the best to call home for the holidays. During typical years, Vail hosts a variety of festive activities including tree lighting and the New Year’s Eve Torchlight Ski Down, and of course… fireworks.

Stowe , Vermont

Stowe

Ever a quaint, quintessential New England town, Stowe is one of the most charming places to be – and ski – during the holidays. Walk around the historic town, which lies draped in Christmas lights, and peruse the local artisan market for special gifts for the folks who couldn’t make it.

Some of the featured events include concerts at the Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center as well as the Community of Lights Contest, which allows visitors to rank local light displays using their smartphones.

Sun Valley , Idaho

ski trips christmas 2023

Sun Valley, ID plays a fantastic host for holiday celebrations. Downtown Ketchum is typically adorned in breathtaking Christmas lights and nothing is quite as romantic as walking along the historic main street, arm in arm with those you love after a long day of skiing on Baldy.

The Christmas Torchlight Parade is a free, must-see event and the kids can even warm up with complimentary hot chocolate and cookies afterward.

Palisades Tahoe , California

Christ,as

While a visit to this Lake Tahoe resort is always a treat, Palisades Tahoe really shines during the holiday season. With a vibrant village, ice skating rink, and more Christmas lights than you can count, this Tahoe mainstay features both great skiing and lots of off-mountain activities for the whole family to enjoy.
