New York Series: The True Story Behind Ace Frehley’s “New York Groove”

ny groove tours

Ace Frehley turns 72 on April 27th, proving you are never too old to keep rocking and rolling. While the famed guitarist is most known for his prominent role in the hard rock group KISS , he has also enjoyed a fruitful solo career.

Perhaps one of his biggest solo hits is “New York Groove” – an anthemic encapsulation of Frehley’s youthful spirit and the city that drove him to new heights. But it might surprise you to hear that he didn’t actually write the tune. And that it was popular in Europe long before it ever reached America.

ny groove tours

Ace Frehley was born Paul Daniel Frehley in 1951. He grew up in the Bronx and first picked up a guitar at the age of 14 . It was here in New York City that Frehley saw the Who and Cream perform live, further solidifying aspirations of rock stardom into his young, impressionable brain.

Frehley cut his teeth on the local NYC scene throughout the late 60s and early 70’s. It was during this time that he answered an ad calling for a guitarist in a hard rock group. It read, “Lead guitarist wanted with flash and ability.”

That fateful listing brought him into the fold of bassist/singer Gene Simmons, rhythm guitarist/singer Paul Stanley and drummer Peter Criss –  KISS was officially born.

The band was signed to Casablanca Records in November 1973 and for most of the decade they toured around the world, skyrocketing to the top of their charts. Catchy choruses, searing guitar riffs and a flair for the theatrics helped the band stand out in more ways than one. A string of platinum albums and sold-out tours lasted throughout the late 70’s.

KISS 1983 - Paul Stanley/Getty images ace frehley

Despite the hectic schedule, all four members of KISS recorded and released respective solo albums on the exact same day in 1978. Frehley’s project was self-titled and featured what would become one of his most popular solo tracks: “New York Groove.”

While the song feels representative of Frehley’s own experiences in New York, the track is actually a cover, originally written by Russ Ballard and recorded by a glam-inspired rock band called Hello . The original track achieved a fair amount of success in Europe, charting at #9 in the U.K. and #7 in Germany . It was reportedly recorded in less than 5 hours in a studio just north of London.

Ballard said in an interview that he had the idea for the song while on a plane ride to NYC.

I felt that’d be a good title for a song,” he said. “The whole idea was of someone going back to New York and singing about the experience.”

The song encapsulates the feeling of a nostalgic return to a place once called home. It starts with the lyrics:

Many years since I was here On the street I was passin’ my time away To the left and to the right Buildings towering to the sky, it’s outta sight

After years of relentless touring, one would think Frehley could relate to the feeling of coming home for the first time in a while. But apparently, Frehley was not enthusiastic about recording the song; he had never even heard the track before covering it. But alas, the label wanted a more commercial song on the album and so, Frehley went ahead with it.

In an interview with Louder Sound in 2016, Frehley put it like this:

“A lot of people think I wrote New York Groove. It’s not a myth that I’ve perpetuated, but that’s the way it is. I wish I would’ve wrote the song, though. I would’ve made a lot more cash out of it, ha-ha-hargh!”

While most of Frehley’s solo album was recorded in a studio in Connecticut, “New York Groove” was a late addition and was recorded in Plaza Sound Studios, right above Radio City Music Hall.

Frehley, Simmons, Stanley and Criss all released their solo albums on September, 18th 1978. But Frehley was the only one who managed a hit single, with none other than “New York Groove. “It stayed on the U.S. charts for 21 weeks , peaking at #13.

Frehley told Louder Sound in that same interview that there was no competition among bandmates to have the best record. But he also revealed that he hadn’t really listened to his fellow bandmates’ projects.

“I did put Gene’s on once,” he recalled in the interview. “When I heard his version of When You Wish Upon A Star I had to pull it off the turntable, ha-ha-hargh!”

Frehley has continued to release solo projects in the past few decades. His most recent solo album, Origins Vol. 2, was released on September 18, 2020. It is a follow-up to Origins Vol. 1 , released in 2016. Both consist of covers of some of Ace Frehley’s favorite songs. Still, “New York Groove” remains a signature song.

In an interview, Russ Ballard attributes the song’s success to its simplicity. “I guess it surprised me because it’s so incredibly simple. They say a good song will always sell, and there’s a lot of truth in that.”

“New York Groove” Lyrics

Many years since I was here On the street I was passin’ my time away To the left and to the right, buildings towering to the sky It’s outta sight in the dead of night

(Ooh) Here I am, again in this city (Ooh) With a fistful of dollars And baby, you’d better believe

I’m back, back in the New York Groove I’m back, back in the New York Groove I’m back, back in the New York Groove Back in the New York Groove, in the New York Groove In the back of my Cadillac Wicked lady, sittin’ by my side, sayin’ “Where are we?” Stopped at 3rd and 43, exit to the night It’s gonna be ecstasy, this place was meant for me

(Ooh) I feel so good tonight (Ooh) Who cares about tomorrow So baby, you’d better believe

I’m back, back in the New York Groove I’m back, back in the New York Groove I’m back, back in the New York Groove Back in the New York Groove, in the New York Groove

I’m back, back in the New York Groove I’m back, back in the New York Groove I’m back, back in the New York Groove I’m back, back in the New York Groove

I’m back, back in the New York Groove I’m back, back in the New York Groove

Review: It’s All Right to Groove to Huey in ‘The Heart of Rock and Roll’

The new musical doesn’t take itself too seriously and has many winning moments — almost enough to eclipse the weaknesses of its story.

  • Share full article

A man in a blue blazer has wrapped his arms around a woman in a yellow dress who is holding a guitar while the man plays it. They are surrounded by dancers, and a band is playing on an upper level.

By Elisabeth Vincentelli

It’s 2024, and Huey Lewis is having a moment . Just let that sink in.

Lewis was an unexpected highlight of the recent Netflix documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop,” about the star-studded 1985 session where “We Are the World” was recorded. An everyman rocker, Lewis was amazed (and still is) that he was rubbing elbows with Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Tina Turner and Bruce Springsteen. He even got to sing the part originally intended for Prince.

Now comes the new Broadway show “The Heart of Rock and Roll,” which is not so much a Huey Lewis (and the News) musical as the Huey Lewis of musicals: not taking itself too seriously, doing what it does well, and just happy to be on Broadway, keeping company with starrier productions.

Like most jukeboxes, “The Heart of Rock and Roll” shoehorns big hits, including “The Power of Love” and “Stuck With You,” with lesser-known tracks into a plot generic enough to accommodate them.

Set in 1987, Jonathan A. Abrams’s book, based on a story by Tyler Mitchell and Abrams, centers on Bobby (Corey Cott, from the underrated “Bandstand”), an employee at an ailing cardboard box manufacturer, Stone Incorporated, in Milwaukee. Bobby works on the assembly line, but he really wants to join the sales department so he can “Be Someone,” as the show’s new song puts it. Wait, no, maybe what he really wants is to rock out with his old band, the Loop. Bobby might sing “It’s Hip to Be Square,” but deep down, does he really believe it?

By now you might have noticed that dreams play a big part in “The Heart of Rock and Roll.” There are numerous references to chasing the dream, making it come true and living it, but also giving it up. Sentimentality is often ladled out, along with clichés. And Bobby, whose sole personality trait appears to be “good guy,” carries more than his share of both — he hears the fateful siren call “one last show” and lugs emotional baggage related to his “old man.” At least Cott gives Bobby a laid-back charm that’s not unlike Lewis’s own, along with his emotional big Act II aria, “The Only One.”

Fortunately, there is also enough good-natured goofball humor to keep Gordon Greenberg’s production from sinking into cloying goo. Much of the levity comes from amusing supporting characters, starting with Bobby’s love interest and his boss’s daughter, Cassandra (McKenzie Kurtz, a recent Glinda in “Wicked”). She is an uber-dork with a fondness for spreadsheets, and Kurtz’s Cassandra is a daffy delight that recalls Annaleigh Ashford’s performance in “Kinky Boots.”

That is not the only time “The Heart of Rock and Roll” brings to mind that hit, which is also set at a factory. Like Jerry Mitchell’s in the earlier show, Lorin Latarro’s high-energy choreography here makes clever use of props, having employees slide on cardboard sheets and deploying the ensemble in a number that involves jumping on Bubble Wrap.

That scene takes place at a packaging convention, where Stone Inc. is trying to drum up business. For obscure reasons, the company’s sensible head of H.R., Roz (a wonderfully droll Tamika Lawrence), has tagged along. She, too, had to make a life-changing decision once — “and it’s a good thing,” Roz dryly quips, “because otherwise I never would have found the unbridled joy of ‘human resources.’” (This sets up the best plot twist, which comes at the very end.)

Naturally, nice Midwesterners need a wicked antagonist, preferably of the putting-on-airs kind (a big no-no in the Huey Lewis universe). And here the show over-delivers thanks to the loose-limbed physical-comedy ace Billy Harrigan Tighe and his memorable performance as Tucker, Cassandra’s cocky finance-bro ex. In the number “Give Me the Keys (And I’ll Drive You Crazy),” he and his old Princeton a cappella group, the Undertones, invite Cassandra for a ride in a pretend car. The moment when Kurtz mimes opening the door and Tighe mimes rolling down the window is a strong contender for single funniest scene of the Broadway spring.

While the dialogue has occasional pop, it’s the performances that keep the show rolling, along with Greenberg and Latarro’s fast-paced, resourceful staging. Bobby’s “I Want a New Drug,” for example, is an economical summary of why many men join rock bands: In his hotel room at the convention, just as he pulls out his beloved guitar, handling it like a holy relic, three women magically emerge from inside the bed — in a nifty touch, their outfits are stylized representations of Bobby’s axe. (The costumes are by Jen Caprio.)

“The Heart of Rock and Roll” is not going to be the subject of think pieces and graduate theses, but its easygoing good spirits are bolstered by solid craftsmanship, and it’d be silly to turn up our noses at that. “Have a good time,” Huey Lewis once sang, wisely quoting Curtis Mayfield. “’Cause it’s all right.”

Breaking news, sands official rips ny for slow-walking state gaming licenses with 3 casinos planned downstate.

Don’t bet on New York gaming regulators winning any races.

A top Sands Casino official ripped state gaming regulators for a “confusing” years-long review process that means licenses in the Big Apple region are still months away.

“We’re very disappointed by New York,” Rob Goldstein, CEO of Sands  told investors on a first-quarter earnings call first reported on the gambling site  playny.com .

Las Vegas Sands Reveals Proposed Casino

Sands has pitched a $4 billion casino complex at the Nassau Coliseum site in Uniondale but the state gaming commission said it won’t decide as many as three new casino licenses in the New York City area until late 2025 — after nearly three years of preliminary discussions.

“We’ve been working there for a long time and we thought it would happen in 24 … Now they’re saying 25 or 26,” Goldstein said.

“I don’t think we have any clarity to be honest with you. It’s confusing and disappointing … I just don’t know about New York. We wish they’d figure it out and let us know,” he said in rare public criticism  leveled at  a regulator ruling on applications.

Still, Goldstein said he remained “hopeful that things [will] turn around” in New York.

The foot-dragging pushes out the over-under on the earliest a gaming facility could open in the metro area to some time in 2026.

Sands is now saying publicly what other casino industry insiders and bidders have griped privately about the snails pace. But the longer time frame could benefit other bidders struggling to overcome community and political resistance.

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and the Republican-led county legislature approved a 99-year lease for Sands to run a casino at the government owned Nassau Coliseum — if they ultimately win a state gaming license.

New majority owner Patrick Dumont

The Nassau-backed Sands bid has been beset by some opposition and legal challenges — led by Hofstra University.

Nassau on Friday announced it will rework its lease agreement with Sands after Hostra won a court ruling that determined county officials violated the open meetings and environmental laws when ramming through the initial approval last year.

Neighborhood and political support will be crucial in determining which bidders win the right to operate a casino in the New York City area.

Any casino bid must get sign off from the state Gaming Facility Location Board.

The review board in a particular area where a casino is being proposed includes the local council member, state senator and assemblyman, borough president and the mayor and governor.

Community boards have raised objections to some of the casino plans pitched in the city — notably the Related Companies /Wynn $12 billion gaming facility and officer tower complex for Hudson Yards and the Thor Equity consortium gaming facility complex along the Coney Island boardwalk .

Other casino projects include Mets owner Steve Cohen’s bid for a $8 billion project near Citi Field, Bally’s at Ferry Point in the Bronx, and the Silverstein Properties in Hell’s Kitchen.

The Cohen and Bally’s proposals also need a state law approved to convert use of their properties from parkland to commercial use.

Meanwhile, Genting-Resorts Worlds at Aqueduct racetrack and MGM-Empire City at Yonkers Raceway are seeking a license to add table games to their slots parlor.

Reached for comment, the Gaming Commission referred The Post to previous statements made by executive director Robert Williams, who insisted the timetable to award casino licenses is  “ahead of schedule” because Gov. Kathy Hochul and the state legislature have not anticipated revenues from casinos to help bankroll the MTA until 2026.

A winning bidder must pay an upfront $500 million license fee for the privilege of operating a casino.

Las Vegas Sands Reveals Proposed Casino On The Nassau Coliseum

The Hudson Yards, Citi Field, Coney Island and Bronx pitches would also have to first be approved under the city’s lengthy Uniformed Land Use Review Procedure, the commission said.

“I have been informally advised that navigating the [land use] process will extend through the second quarter of 2025,” Williams said.

He said bidders will also have to undergo a separate state environmental scrutiny — under the State Environmental Quality Review Act that could take time.
