Destination: Morocco

Morocco

The North African Kingdom of Morocco is often described as a gateway : step through and discover a world of colour, diversity and wonder, unlike anything you have experienced before. Rich traditions and heritage are very much alive here, but there is a paradoxical youthfulness to the culture, and a warmth that will draw you further and further in. Get lost in the myriad of cobbled alleyways, or feel small within the red sands of the desert, or at the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. There is something for every traveller in Morocco.

The need to know

Getting around

Odyssey travels by coach and occasionally uses local transport, including trains and ferries. Specifics are always outlined in your tour itinerary. Morocco has a centralised and impressively extensive rail network — the best in Africa. It links most major centres, is reasonably priced, and is generally preferable to bus travel. The network is operated by the Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF). Casablanca and Rabat are also serviced by modern trams, with plans to extend into Marrakech. Petit taxis are readily available for short-distance travel within main cities.

Accommodation

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses. On our longstay tours, during which you spend the length of the tour in a single location, we use serviced apartments.

Tour guides

In major cities, Odyssey stays in centrally located 3-4 star hotels, with easy access to public transport. In smaller towns or rural areas, we usually stay in family-run hotels or guesthouses.

Health & Safety

As of writing, smarttraveller.gov recommends exercising a high degree of caution when travelling in Morocco. It’s always best to check the latest details before setting out on a trip. Certain parts of Morocco should be avoided for the time being, particularly toward the south and south-east near the Western Sahara. There are risks associated with specific areas, and it is important to take these into consideration when planning your trip. But countries like Morocco rely heavily on tourism, and refusing travel can be detrimental to a struggling economy. Stay apprised of government recommendations for Morocco in order to be best prepared for your trip.

Electrical Supply

Whenever you travel overseas, it’s always wise to take an appropriate travel adaptor. Plugs in Morocco have two round pins, of types C and E. Voltage is 127V, 220V and 50 Hz. Make sure to pick up the right adaptor before your trip.

Egypt tour: escorted small group history & cultural tour of Egypt

This tour was excellent, encompassing not only historical Egypt but also introducing us to modern Egypt. The varied travel by bus, small cruise ship and air, contributed to our interest and enjoyment. The extremely high quality of our tour leader, the Egyptologist and the local guide enhanced our knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of this tour.

Both cruise ships exceeded our expectations for cleanliness and quality of service.

This was a fascinating program and the support was outstanding

A tour beyond expectation. Egypt has so much to offer from the past and Odyssey did a fantastic job.

Mal was a wonderful Program leader. She would be the best tour leader we have ever experienced. Her obvious experience and her calm demeanor contributed greatly to the cohesiveness of our group which, in turn, contributed to our enjoyment.

The Victoria Falls were an outstanding treat.

What is the time zone?

Morocco is on Western European Time (WET), or UTC+0. The nation observes Daylight Savings Time (Western European Summer Time or WEST), making it UTC+1.

Is tipping customary in Morocco?

If you’re on an Odyssey tour, we take care of tipping so you don’t need to give it a second thought. However, in your free time, or if travelling independently, it’s essential that you tip an appropriate amount for services. There is no general rule for tipping in Morocco, so to some extent, it is discretionary. Upmarket restaurants may include gratuities in your bill, so be sure to check this before leaving an additional tip. It is always a good idea to tip hotel staff and drivers.

What is the internet access like in Morocco?

Internet is easily accessible, and most hotels and many cafes will be able to offer it.

Can I use my mobile/cell phone while in Morocco?

Check with your cell phone provider to see whether you’re able to make calls and use data while in Morocco. Many providers will allow you to pay a daily fee that allows you to make calls and check the internet while only being charged your regular rates. However, be certain to inform your provider that you’re heading overseas, because just like a bank they can turn off your service as a result of unusual activity.

Responsible travel tips for Morocco

  • Learn at least the local greetings to break the ice. Although many locals speak English, the more you know of the native language, the greater your experience of the country will be.
  • Carry a business card in your wallet or purse from your local hotel, to assist you with the return journey if you do become lost.
  • Always ensure that you are covered by travel insurance. If you need advice on this feel free to contact Odyssey and we’ll be able to help.
  • When travelling independently, make sure you check the opening hours of shops and museums so that you don’t miss out! Museums and galleries are often closed on Mondays. Also be certain to check whether your trip coincides with any public holidays, so you can plan accordingly.
  • Consider contacting your bank to inform them that you may be making purchases overseas. Otherwise, they may flag any activity on your account as suspicious. Also, check which ATMs and banks are compatible with your cards, to ensure you can withdraw cash with minimal fees.
  • Before departing, make sure you have a number of Moroccan dirham in a range of denominations. You don’t want to be carrying around enormous amounts of cash, but take enough to make it easy to pay in locations that might not accept credit card. It will also help you avoid card transaction fees, and it makes tipping a breeze.

The problems started two weeks before the departure date for the trip when I received a call from Odyssey that my return flight was messed up (they mistakenly had me returning from the wrong city). After a few frustrating phone calls where they tried to put me on a flight with a seven-hour wait-over in Munich, I was scheduled on a flight with Air Canada. That sounded fine. The times sounded fine, but I was unaware that this was an eight-hour flight to Montreal!!!! A direct flight to Boston takes six hours, but they told me that they were unable to do that since they were only contracted with specific airlines . There was no usable internet on this Air Canada flight (you evidently have to preload the app before takeoff, but no one bothered to mention that, since not all the instructions are in English), and there were no movies, or TV screen...it’s basically an antiquated plane . This is NOT what I would expect from the booking on a luxury tour company.

Further, most of the hotels on the trip were funky at best. The last one in Aix-en-Provence was nice to look at, but it was on a noisy street and the air conditioning, which they supposedly fixed in everyone’s rooms, didn’t work. The first night I opened the windows to be awakened at 4 am by trash pickup and at 5 by street cleaners. The hotel said they fixed the air and it worked for about three hours, but at breakfast in the morning, it became apparent from the stories by disgruntled tour members that no one was able to sleep. I was up since 4:30 a.m. that morning. It wasn’t just that hotel. The other hotels had no air at all and in Avignon, when I opened the windows, I then spent the entire night swatting mosquitos as I tried to sleep. I am used to traveling on my own and know what nicer European hotels are like. Again, except for one exception in Perpignon, the company’s brochure misrepresented the accommodations, which were described as first-rate hotels. Three out of four hotels were not even close. However, at that one hotel which I actually liked, the shower door leaked and got the floor all wet. I slipped when getting out of the very deep tub, skidding on the matt on the water-drenched floor, and fell and hurt my neck!!!

The selections and destinations were lovely; France is a beautiful country and our guide was very knowledgeable, organized and capable, but I found the regimen of over-sized tedious meals ridiculous. I felt like I was one of the French ducks being force-fed. Who do they planning these trips for? I am an active, well-traveled, health-conscious woman and by the end of the trip, I had to go off on my own since I couldn’t stand it any longer. People complained they couldn’t sleep since we were all eating too much, too late at night.

I had opted to share a room with a stranger since it was the only way I could go on this booked trip. I lost my husband last year and we had planned a similar trip on our own. To honor him, it felt important to me to go, so I agreed to a roommate. The hotel’s “double” room was two twin beds shoved together to make a kind. I was horrified. They moved the beds one foot apart, all the room would accommodate, the roommate snored like a sailor, was intrusive and anti-Semitic, I refused to room with her. I wound up getting my own room at the last hotel and paid an extra $500 for it. With all of these frustrations, I am very unhappy with the total experience except for France itself and our guide. Asked a refund for $500 to make up for misrepresentation of the trip and inconveniences but they declined, saying that they were sorry and that they would pass my feedback along. I am also passing MY feedback along to you…and can only say, Buyer Beware.

Really did they force you to eat all the food on your plate? Eat what you need and leave the rest. Simply solution that I would expect a well traveled person to know.

I am sorry your trip was disappointing.

I would never assume a hotel is as represented in any brochure so I would have looked up the hotels on line before booking.

I also would never accept an unknown room mate!!

I am glad you wrote so that others will know to check these things before they book any tour. I generally travel on my own without tours and I do a lot of research before going on a trip. I think those who take tours might want to do an equal amount of research.

Well, of course. That's obvious, but when a tour is set up with those kinds of meals with no choices, there is nothing to do but sit there through a tedious meal. Life is too short to spend it sitting at a table, waiting to stuff yourself.

I DID look up the hotels, which on paper, looked okay, but they certainly wouldn't say in their marketing copy that their air-conditioners don't work, the room is full of mosquitos, etc...This is something the tour should know ahead of time. I agree about traveling on your own. Live and learn.

Well then triply sorry about the hotels!! You are correct that you never know about aircon or mosquitos!! Glad that at least the tour guide was well prepared. Have you written reviews of the specific hotels here on Trip Adviser?? That might help other travelers.

My question would be...did you pay luxury tour prices? I mean, it all sounds like a typical tour to me, and I suppose I’m wondering why you would go on a “luxury tour” and share a room. Or why/how your roommate’s anti-Semitism would come up. Or why it’s a problem to show up at a meal, chat, eat your fill, and then just disappear. I don’t take tours because of the food issue, but you never have to stuff yourself.

I don't know about the rest but anti Semitism can come up in normal conversation.

It is not totally unheard of for folks to say things .

It is unfortunate that this was not a successful tour. There may be some things that are the fault of the company, but there are a number of things cited that they would have no control over. Travel is no longer an easy endeavor, and even on a tour where you think things will go right, the traveler still needs to do their homework. It would appear than several of your complaints are due to the 3rd parties involved - not the company. It is clear that your expectations were different than what was provided, and I expect that since this was a trip honoring your husband's plan; there may have been higher subconscious expectations, but you should not put all blame on the company.

A look at the tour details, hotels and TripAdvisor reviews certainly indicate that some details should have been provided. The AC problem in the Avignon hotel had been going on for several weeks and though earlier, OU informed people about it, the hotel was not able to provide sufficient fans for rooms. Depending when you travelled, yes, it would have been advisable to switch hotels - but there might not have been an alternate available. Despite their description as 'first class' they are not the equivalent of North American 'first class'. That is another self education; because European hotel levels are quite different from those in Canada. I expect the mosquitos were due to people trying to get some fresh air and no screens on the windows. OU is not going to be aware of this - that is the clients' fault. I also note not all meals were provided, so you certainly had opportunity to eat elsewhere for your own preference. Granted, if is difficult to pass over meals pre paid for, but there comes a time one has to decide priorities. If the prices are in US$ as I believe, this is not an inexpensive trip and I can see that the additional $995US for the single supplement could easily make it cost prohibitive to NOT share. But it comes at a price of its own.....namely an unknown room mate.

For what it is worth, this company is discussed fairly often over on the Senior Travel forum. They actually get pretty consistent good recommendations with many return travelers. You may want to repost there as the negative to the positive reviews - particularly for people using the search function in the future.

You can also review the restaurants and lodgings accordingly.

Wishing you better luck on your next travels.

To Jeannette H,

We sincerely regret that your tour with us did not live up to your expectations. As noted in our catalog, we select hotels for each tour that we believe will offer our guests the best combination of quality, value, and atmosphere for each destination. We also offer guests the opportunity to make their own air arrangements. Again, as we discussed with you, we are very sorry that you did not enjoy your experience with us. We wish you all the best on your future travels.

odyssey travel small group tours

I just returned from my fifth trip with Odysseys and I think they are top notch; I wouldn’t consider traveling with any other tour company. I found all the accommodations to be excellent and I never had a complaint. Trip before last, I roomed with a woman I had never met and it worked out just fine. We e-mailed and spoke on the phone with each other before committing. Last week I booked my sixth tour with them and, again, am rooming with a stranger who I expect will become a friend. I’m sorry you had such a bad experience, but a lot of it sounds as if it was your own making and is the antithesis of my experiences.

Tours with Odysseys Unlimited are custom-designed specifically for small groups, with a balanced mix of sightseeing, traveling, cultural encounters, and free time. Guests enjoy a personal and authentic travel experience provided by knowledgeable guides. They focus heavily on ensuring a unique, and comfortable small group experience, with flexible itineraries.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling With Odysseys Unlimited?

  • History and culture lovers
  • Active and able

Odysseys Unlimited is the type of tour company for travelers seeking a well organized small group experience - tour attendance is strictly limited to be between 12 to 24 guests. If you’re interested in visiting the top sites, and maybe venturing into the realm of a funky bed and breakfast or two, and enjoying local meals vetted by your guide, this company could be a good choice.

They present solid, easy itineraries, with an eye towards historic and cultural landmarks. Odysseys Unlimited might not be for you if venturing far off the beaten path is an important facet of your travel experience.

Travelers with Odysseys Unlimited are typically between the ages of 50 and 80 - and this age group is where they focus. Activities are generally not too physically demanding, accommodations are comfortable.  Most tours involve a lot of walking, with slight elevation changes.

Odyssey's does require that travelers be relatively physically fit and able. Wheelchair access is unfortunately not an option.

Free time is readily available for those wanting to explore a bit on their own, going shopping or visiting more local areas.

This is adventure and thrills recalibrated for an older audience. You might not be exploring too far off the beaten path, but that doesn’t mean boring and static. Odysseys is for those older travelers who want an African safari, for example, that doesn't require the stamina of a 30 year old, yet are maybe unwilling or unable to spring for a luxury safari.

Odysseys fits comfortably in the middle. Don’t expect full private access everywhere you go, but you can expect a dedicated guide and a fun group of travelers to enjoy the experience with.

Under 50 and families are welcome as well (no children under 15), but the mix in your group will definitely skew older.

Their tours are around 10-20 days long; an ideal amount of time for getting to know your tour companions, visit tourist spots as well as enjoy more local and cultural activities.

If you don’t think small group travel is for you, or you’re unsure about a certain destination whether for safety reasons, language barriers, or other factors - traveling with Odysseys Unlimited is a good place to start.

Their tours are specifically designed to be flexible - a good amount of free time is allotted for the more “independent minded,” yet if you’re more comfortable hanging out with the guide, that’s fine too. Traveling to the next destination is not just a bus ride; you’ll have plenty of opportunities to stop and explore local villages and historical sights.

And if that wasn’t enough, a special perk when traveling with Odysseys Unlimited is the inclusion of international airfare in the trip price!

About the company.

Small Groups: Our Only Focus

Small group travel is all that we do – just 12 to 24 guests on our own custom-designed tours. And it’s all we’ve ever done, from the day we opened our doors in 1998.

We design and operate our tours specifically for small groups, rather than adapt a conventional tour to take fewer guests. And while you’re sure to find tours with fewer guests, or lower prices, or labeled “Deluxe” (with the prices to match), you won’t find the combination of value, quality, superior accommodations and amenities, and guaranteed small groups that we offer.

We do this by creating and operating our own tours, and offering them to you without any middlemen. We work closely with our airline, hotel, and other travel partners to secure the lowest rates possible. Then we put those rates to good use by offering our tours at an excellent value – not necessarily the lowest price, but the best ratio of price to experiences, quality, and service.

We invite you to compare our tours with those of other travel companies and see for yourself. You’ll find that Odysseys Unlimited offers the best package of small group travel and premium quality – at an excellent value.

The Small Group Experience

The small size of our tour groups allows us to move about more flexibly and efficiently; enjoy more spontaneous encounters; and experience a degree of freedom and independence simply not available to travelers on conventional group tours of 40 or more.

Traveling on your own you’d see the major sights, but chances are you’d stick close to the traditional tourist routes. Our goal is to show you the major sights and take you behind the scenes: into private homes and traditional villages, to local schools and neighborhood restaurants. And you’ll travel in the company of experienced, knowledgeable tour directors and guides who share their countries – and their lives – with you, bringing destinations alive in a truly personal and meaningful way.

Not only do these opportunities enhance your travels, but someone else makes the arrangements and manages all the details – leaving you free to savor the small group experience.

Extensive Included Sightseeing

Our small group tours include a great deal of thoughtful and engaging sightseeing and activities, from camel-back rides, rainforest walks, and scenic excursions to guided museum tours, home visits, cultural performances, and wine tastings. In major cities there’s usually free time to explore on your own after a guided city tour.

Respect for Your Freedom and Individuality

If you’ve avoided taking group tours, preferring to travel on your own, we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by our level of service, independence, and value. And if you’re a veteran of traditional group tours, we’re confident you’ll be impressed by the many advantages of small group travel, as well as by the high quality and outstanding value you’ll enjoy with Odysseys Unlimited.

We offer the best of both worlds: the value, ease, and comprehensive itinerary of a group tour, and the freedom, quality, and service that sophisticated travelers demand, and deserve. Should you choose to sit out an included tour or two and go off on your own, you’re entirely welcome to do so. And we think you’ll appreciate having the occasional lunch or dinner on your own, away from the group.

Our Tour Directors Make the Difference

We believe personal attention is key to an outstanding travel experience, so we’ve ensured that it’s a hallmark of Odysseys Unlimited. It starts with our travel counselors when you reserve your trip, then continues on the road with your tour director. Our professional tour directors rank among the best in the business; their love of travel is surpassed only by their desire to share their enthusiasm and knowledge with others. And traveling in a small group means your tour director will have more time to spend with you and to share the personal insights that can add so much to your experience.

A Variety of Accommodations

We know that hotels aren’t the main reason for traveling. But good accommodations can enhance your overall tour experience, and great accommodations can contribute to a great trip. So we select hotels that we believe are best for a particular trip and experience – those that offer the best combination of quality, value, and atmosphere for each destination. Our hotels in major cities are usually centrally located so guests can get around easier; our unique lodgings are often out of the way, offering our tour members a local ambiance larger groups never experience.

Our lodging options are divided into three segments:

Excellent Hotels

These are the Deluxe, Superior First Class, and First Class accommodations we use in major cities, including well-known chain hotels and independently owned properties. You can expect excellent service and amenities in these well-located properties.

Unique Lodgings Perhaps our most interesting lodgings, these properties cater to small groups and independent travelers, and generally are not available to conventional groups of 40 or more. From the historic  paradores  of Spain, to a French farmhouse, to a Japanese ryokan or a Tuscan villa, these accommodations often are destinations in themselves.

Small Ships We leave the mass-market big ship cruise experience to others, and instead focus on the smaller, more intimate ships that ply distinctive waterways. As you cruise along the Yangtze River, the Turquoise Coast, or through the Patagonian ice fields, among others, your small ship is as much a part of the journey as the places you visit. These vessels let you see the life of a country up close, and allow you to disembark frequently to explore. And while they may vary from simple and comfortable to truly deluxe, these ships generally feature a casual onboard atmosphere, single-seating dining, and amenities such as lounges, boutiques, and plenty of open deck space.

Most Gratuities Included

Experienced travelers know that tipping is an expected element of worldwide travel; but at times it can become a nuisance or inconvenience. For that reason, we’ve eliminated the worry by including in your tour price all gratuities for local guides and drivers, hotel and airport porters, and dining room servers. Gratuities for your Odysseys Unlimited Tour Director and shipboard personnel (if your tour includes a cruise) are not included and should be extended on a voluntary basis, in recognition of truly excellent service.

What Your Tour Price Includes

We design our tours to be highly inclusive, while still making it possible for you to exercise some personal preferences. So we include all the essentials – airfare, accommodations, most meals, extensive sightseeing – but leave some room for you to explore on your own or to enjoy a few meals away from the group.

In general, every Odysseys Unlimited trip includes:

  • Travel in a small group of just 12 to 24 guests – guaranteed
  • Round-trip air transportation from listed cities; plus all flights within your tour
  • Accommodations
  • Many meals: all breakfasts, many lunches and dinners – and you’ll also have the opportunity to dine on your own, without the group
  • All advertised sightseeing (plus all entrance fees and admissions)
  • Singular activities and more intimate cultural encounters possible only with a small group
  • The services of an experienced, professional Odysseys Unlimited Tour Director
  • Gratuities for local guides, dining room servers, airport and hotel porters, and all drivers
  • Luggage handling for one bag per person
  • $100 frequent traveler credit toward your next Odysseys Unlimited tour ($200 after three tours; $300 after 10 tours)

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Bue Marino beach on Favignana’s east coast

Where Odysseus threw a barbecue: exploring Sicily’s Favignana island

The Egadi isles are said to have inspired the mythical islands in the Odyssey. Today, the largest of the group is a quiet place of blissful beaches, fresh fish, neon seas and ice-cream breakfasts

I cycled into birdsong, into colour, the light glimmering against the white of the low stone walls. There was a spaciousness as I cycled, a lateral stretching of soundscape, big skies, birds fluting. I didn’t meet anyone else on the narrow lanes and had a sense of being completely alone on an island of 2,000 people. Is there anything happier than being on a bicycle early in the morning, heading to the sea?

The Egadi archipelago off the north-west coast of Sicily is a well-kept secret. Italians come here on holiday, but the islands are relatively unknown to international tourists. And an even better-kept secret is that these magical islands inspired the fantastical lands of the Odyssey, Europe’s oldest travel story. There are a total of five islands and it’s possible to visit three of them.

I’d come to Favignana, Odyssey’s “island full of wonders” according to one theory, as part of my quest to discover the real-life places that inspired the Odysseus’s epic journey for my new book . As soon as I set foot here, I fell tipsily in love. The largest of the islands in the archipelago, it’s still tiny, measuring less than eight square miles.

According to one theory, this was the island where Odysseus’s crew stopped before he and a few companions went off to meet the Cyclops. Favignana is supposedly where they rested, hunted goats, barbecued them on the beach and drank “strong red wine” (though I didn’t see a single goat in all the time I spent there).

Bike by stone wall with bougainvillaea

The first thing I did when I arrived was hire a bici from charming Marcello at the GAC rental shop right by the port. There’s no need for a car, because the island is so small and mostly flat. Favignana boasts one of Sicily’s most famed beaches, Cala Rossa, and I set out to find it. It was the site of one of those endless, confusing Punic wars – this cove was where the Greeks were badly outnumbered but fought their enemies so bravely that the seas turned red with blood, giving the beach its name. It’s a lovely bike ride over and the rocky beach is unlike any I’ve ever seen. Quarrying has left a legacy here, and the huge, vertical standing stones look strange and beautiful. And the water is a neon turquoise.

There are plenty of other – equally lovely, if less iconic – coves to visit. Lido Burrone is the island’s only sandy beach, and the most dramatic is Bue Marino, a former quarry on the east coast where the waters are deep and clear beneath walls of rock. It’s the most striking place for a swim on the island, and a great place to watch the sunrise. Cala Azzurra, nearby, is a more classic cove, and right above it is a simple cafe where owner Dario serves good panini and arancini.

For a little island, Favignana has a very bloodthirsty history. I learned about this at the excellent museum by the harbour. My guide explained that Favignana was the site of the largest tonnara (tuna fishery) in the Mediterranean, owned by the mega-wealthy Florio family (recently the subject of a film, The Lions of Sicily , on Disney Plus, starring many islanders as extras). She showed me around the 19th-century processing plant and explained all its dark innovations – including a complicated arrangement of seven nets that took a month to set up under water, and sinister long, wooden harpoons that were viciously effective. She told me fish were canned here in astonishing numbers.

The tuna fishery wall with fish mural

The plant closed in 1982 and, thankfully, bluefin tuna are now subject to very strict quotas, but there is evidence of tuna fishing heritage all over town in plaques and photographs, and in the ruins of the ancient boathouse buildings across the water.

After all that history I grabbed a coffee from Maria at the Kiosko, a simple shack on Praia beach, near the factory. It also serves wine and beer, to be enjoyed on a deckchair facing the sea. I sat here for a while, reading more about the geography of the Odyssey. There are lots of conflicting theories: some people think Sicily was the island of the sun god , and Samuel Butler, a Victorian novelist, believed that Marettimo, the most remote island in the Egadi archipelago, could be Ithaca, Odysseus’s home island, the place he was desperately trying to return to.

For breakfast the next day I headed to Caffè Aegusa in the village, next to the yellow church, and watched as Italians guzzled enormous brioche con gelato with their espressos. Ice-cream for breakfast, that’s when you know you’re on holiday.

This island is far more relaxed and scruffy than places like Capri, although Camparia , a swish new beach bar that offers elegant cocktails and sunset views, is attempting to elevate the scene. Bar New Albatros in the centre of the village is more relaxed, with strong drinks, chilled vibes and an excellent playlist. For dinner there’s a bunch of options, from simple fried fish or spicy tuna kebabs at Pescheria Florio to more refined dining at Sotto Sale . La Bettola became a favourite for its delicious seafood spaghetti and friendly service. Lorenzo, the owner’s son, gets up at 4am every day to catch fish and calamari for the kitchen.

Levanzo harbour

The island is about 30 minutes by hydrofoil from Sicily’s coast (in high season book tickets, including your return, in advance). It can be done on a day trip from Trapani. But for me, Favignana is not a place to rush around. To appreciate its wonders requires slowing down and spending some time here.

I stayed in Casa Giorgia , on a quiet street in the main village. There’s a wide range of hotels and guesthouses here and around the coast – just be sure to book well ahead in summer. I became friends with local fisherman Silvano “Lo Squalo” ( the shark) and joined him to eat the fish that he’d caught that day and shoot the breeze (even though I speak no Italian and he speaks no English). He’s great company and also offers rustic accommodation at his no-frills homestay in the countryside.

Occasionally I roused myself to take a day trip – to Marettimo for hiking and bird watching, and to Levanzo to look at the cave paintings. For more action, you could book a boat tour with Capitan Sinagra , or go scuba diving in the protected marine zone.

Caffè and a cannolo

But the very best thing to do here is channel the Italians and find il dolce far niente , the sweetness of doing nothing. Favignana is a place to just be in the moment, figure out which direction the wind is blowing from, select a cove on the opposite coast (to minimise the chance of jellyfish stings), grab a traditional pane cunzato (a roll stuffed with tomato, tuna, anchovy, capers and basil) for lunch from Jimmy at the Panificio Costanza and some fig biscuits from Rosa at Antichi Sapori bakery, throw a swimsuit, some water and sunscreen in your bike basket and cycle to the beach, keeping an eye out for the peregrine falcons that live high above on Monte Santa Caterina.

For me, Favignana feels far more like Circe’s island, a place of magical enchantments rather than somewhere to hunt goats. All the geographical theories seemed pretty subjective, so why not invent my own? I lay in the sun and dreamed of Odysseus sailing across the perilous seas, of goddesses that turn into birds, of all those childish gods having their temper tantrums, and sent out a little prayer of thanks to all those old gods for being here in this real-life mythical island.
