A Day Cruise on the Rhine River in Germany

Pinterest Graphic

One of the most memorable day trips we took while living in Germany was for our anniversary, a cruise on the Rhine River. With multitudes of castles strung throughout the hilly banks of the river, it’s the best way to see and learn about the reigning history of Germany.

Here’s a Day Cruise on the Rhine River in Germany:

Burg Ehrenfels on the Rhine River

Info for the Rhine River Boat Tour

With multiple route options to choose from, we opt for embarking from Bingen. Buying our tickets through the Bingen-Ruedesheimer company, the cost was around 15 Euro per person.

While there are a multitude of tour options, we chose the castle excursion for a chance to see up to 20 castles. A tour guide on the boat discusses the history behind each as we float by. For an up close and personal castle experience, the boat docks at multiple villages. A second boat rounds back every hour for you to grab and continue on down the river.

Since I wanted to see all of the castles in our short time on the Rhine, we didn’t depart the boat at any time but I loved seeing them from the water.

Rolling Hills of Germany with Castles at the Top

The German Castles Along the Rhine River

With more than 20 different castles to view, it’s hard to decide which one is worthy of your time to stop at. I’ll go into detail about each one in this post, while also giving historic information about them!

Watch Tower on the Rhine River

Burg Ehrenfels

Although the actual date of construction is unknown, Burg Ehrenfels was used as a customs point on the Rhine in the 1200s. A ‘Mouse Tower’ was built on an islet in the water across from the castle to ensure complete supervision over the Rhine. Burg Ehrenfels was damaged in the Thirty Years’ War, then completely ruined during the Siege of Mainz in 1689.

Vineyards dating back to the 13th century still dominate the cliff around Burg Ehrenfels, where the Ehrenfelser grape was born.

A hike to the ruins is possible, taking about an hour, but the castle is officially now closed off to tours.

Burg Rheinstein in Germany

Burg Rheinstein

Only a few years after it was constructed in 1316, Burg Rheinstein suffered from the wars fought around it. In the late 1800s, it was purchased by a Prussian Prince and rebuilt into what stands today. The castle features multiple drawbridges and doors that resemble the Medieval era. With a courtyard hosting a 500 500 year old vineyard, grapes are still produced today.

You can visit Burg Rheinstein on a tour from March to November.

Burg Reichenstein

Burg Reichenstein

Burg Reichenstein, also known as Falkenburg, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Sight. While the exact date of construction is unknown, it was first mentioned in 1213. Much debate lies around the history of this castle but theory suggests that Dietrich von Hohenfels’ inherited it after the death of his father. Eventually, Hohenfels became known as a robber knight and had a small army join him. In 1282, King Rudolph I of Habsburg flooded the area of the castle with his men, successfully capturing Hohenfels and his people. He destroyed the hostages and the castle, forbidding it to be rebuilt. Over the next few hundred years, the castle fell into many different hands but was finally restored in 1834 into what it is today.

Burg Reichenstein is open to the public and also features a restaurant and hotel.

Cathedral on the Rhine River in Germany

Sooneck, another UNESCO World Heritage Sight, has a similar history to that of Burg Reichenstein. Hohenfels and his Lords ran this castle as well until it was also besieged by King Rudolph I in 1282. The castle fell into many different families over the next 300 years but when their bloodline ran out, it was no longer taken care of. Along with every castle on the left bank of the Rhine, it was destroyed during the War of Palatine Succession, specifically by the army of King Louis XIV of France in 1689. In 1834, the castle was rebuilt by the Prince of Prussia and his brothers, converting it into a hunting lodge but never was used. After WWI, it was handed over to the State then given to the State Ministry of Castles, who still own it today.

The Sooneck Castle is open to the public for tours.

Stahleck Castle on the Hill Overlooking the Rhine River

Stahleck Castle was built in the 10th century by the Archbishop of Cologne and features a rare characteristic of German castles, a moat. In the 11th century, Goswin von Falkenburg inherited the castle through his marriage to Luitgard von Hengebach, a widow of a Holy Roman Empire King. Their son married a woman who was brothers with King Conrad III of Germany. In 1140, that son exchanged Stahleck to King Conrad. This in turn made him one of the greatest Lords of the Holy Roman Empire because he already owned two other castles along the Rhine River. Since Stahleck was between the two, he made Bacharach into a trading town for the wine they grew on the vineyards. After many deaths, inheritances and exchanges of hands, Stahleck was conquered and destroyed multiple times during the Thirty Years’ War. Spaniards and French continued to capture the castle but it ultimately was blown up by the French in 1689. The castle ruins continued to be traded to different hands but in 1909, it was passed over to a restoration organization by the Prussians.

In 1925, the castle was turned over to the Rhineland-Palatinate Youth Hostel Association. It still operates as a hostel today with 168 beds.

Burg Gutenfels on the Rhine River

Burg Gutenfels

Burg Gutenfels was built in 1220 and was used as a toll castle per the Holy Roman Empire. Pfalzgrafenstein is the small white castle on its own island in the middle of the Rhine River. Built to guard customs posts and for long-distance trade routes, it served as a sort of border crossing. Back in its prime, walls connected the two castles, leading directly down from Gutenfels and across the water to Pfalzgrafenstein. Prussia purchased the castle in 1866, ending the tolls a year later.

Today, the castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Sight and was once used as a hotel but transferred to a private residence in 2006.

Schönburg Castle on the Rhine River

Schönburg Castle was first mentioned in the early 900s, with the Duke of Schönburg imposing tolls and taxes for passing by. The bloodline of all heirs eventually died out in the 1600s. It was then burnt down by French troops during the Palatinate Wars. The ruins of the castle were left for two centuries until it was restored.

Today it’s leased to a family who operates a restaurant and hotel there .

Schönburg Castle on the Rhine River

Loreley is the name for the large cliff that juts out into the Rhine River. Synonymous with many myths and legends, the name comes from German and Celtic terms meaning ‘murmuring rock.’ Legend says that a mermaid, scorned by her lover, would sit on the edge of this rock brushing her golden hair and singing sweet tunes. Apparently this caused the captains of the ships below to wreck into the rock. Loreley has been the focus of many German poems and songs, allowing the folklore legend to live on.

The Cliff of Loreley

Located around the bend of Loreley, Burg Katz was constructed in 1371 by Count William II of Katzenelnbogen. In 1435, the Count was the first to plant a Riesling vineyard here which still exists today. Burg Katz was seized and destroyed by Napolean in 1806.

The castle was restored in 1896 and is now privately owned.

Burg Katz

Constructed by Count Diether V of Katzenelnbogen in 1245, Rheinfels is the largest fortress in the Middle Rhein Valley. It’s also the largest castle on the Rhine River. Rheinfels features the largest butter-churn tower in Germany and the largest self-supporting vaulted cellar in Europe. The cellar can fit up to 400 people and is used today as a meeting place for concerts and other events.

In 1797, the French Revolutionary Army destroyed the castle completely.

While much of the castle remains as ruins today, the fortress is so massive that it supports a luxury hotel, a restaurant, wellness center and a museum.

8 Highlights of a Rhine River Day Cruise, Germany

By Author Paulina

Posted on Published: November 15, 2018  - Last updated: September 13, 2022

I discovered a gem, that’s so close to my home country Luxembourg , that I cannot believe why it took me so long to explore it. I am talking about the Middle Rhine River Valley in Germany !

Steep vineyards, legendary castles on hilltops, great food and quaint wine villages are creating a truely enchanting setting. My favorite way to explore the German Middle Rhine River is by river cruise.

Let’s sail off to the best destinations for a Rhine river day cruise in Germany!

Read more about the best castles on the Rhine

There are 2 options on how to explore the Rhine River Valley, a declared UNESCO Heritage Site since 2002, by boat:

  • You can either opt for a cruise that takes you from Basel or Strasbourg to the German Rhine
  • or you can explore the Middle Rhine River Valley by day cruises from main Rhine towns

rhine river day cruise, day trip, rhine river valley, attractions, reviews, prices, europe, castle, village, wine, germany, cologne, frankfurt, mainz, koblenz, rudesheim, boppard, bacharach, one day, full day, avalon, viking cruises, loreley rock, unesco,

A European  river cruise on the Rhine can take everything in between to 2- 8 days. You sleep on the boat and enjoy entertainment and dinner on the boat. You mostly discover the highlights of the Rhine River Valley during the day trips. Some of the most popular Rhine River Cruises are

  • the classical Rhine River cruise from Basel to Amsterdam
  • the Romantic Rhine by Avalon Waterways

The main difference to a Rhine Day River Cruise or tour is that you don’t have your base on the boat but in one of the quaint wine villages along the river or in a larger town like Koblenz or Rüdesheim.

My favorite route to explore the gems of the Rhine River is with the Rhine Pass from Koblenz . It gives you the freedom to visit all the villages and castles at your pace. I recommend taking the route from Koblenz to Bacharach which covers all of the highlights mentioned in this post. Your base can thus be in Koblenz or in one of the quaint wine villages like Boppard, St.Goar or Bacharach.

Buy here your Rhine Boat Pass from Koblenz to Mainz

If you want to spend more time in Koblenz I recommend the River Cruise including a Cable Car ride in Koblenz and a visit to Ehrenbreitstein Fortress.

Now that you are ready to sail off, let me share with you my favorite highlights of Rhine River Day Cruise. The order is based upon my personal preference, however, you’ll find a map at the end of the post with the best of a Rhine River Day Cruise.

Where to stay in Middle Rhine Valley, Germany

1. bacharach, altes hause – “old house” in bacharach.

Bacharach reflects the quintessence of the Romantic Rhine : green, steep vineyards, an impressive castle, medieval ruins, timber frame houses, cobblestone streets, a perfectly maintained fortification wall and friendly people.

The dock is located only a few meters away from the historic town center.

Like so many towns on the Rhine, Bacharach made its money from collecting taxes from the ships passing down the river. In order to absorb the romantic, absolutely relaxing atmosphere, I recommend to start your tour at one of the medieval entrance gates , make it to “ Altes Haus ”, the prettiest and oldest house (1368) in town, stroll on the main street “ Koblenzerstrasse ” packed with wine terraces.

Take “ Rosenstrasse ” to your left and walk up to the Northern entrance gate, from here it’s only 5 minutes to reach the “ Postenturm ”, the best place for panoramic views over the Rhine river and charming Bacharach village.

I was particularly intrigued by the Gothic ruins of a massive chapel, the Wernerkapelle , which lays on the way to the castle Burg Stahleck . For me, Bacharach village is the best place to enjoy the (wine) Romantic of the Rhine river.

Buy here your R hine River Day Cruise Pass to Bacharach

I highly recommend spending at 1 night in Bacharach, as the atmosphere is sublime in early mornings and at nightfall.

Where to stay in Bacharach

The best place to stay in Bacharach is Rhein-Hotel Bacharach. The hotel is family-run since 3 generations and lays on the fortification wall. Mr. Stüber, manager and cook at Rhein-Hotel Bacharach will serve you German cuisine with a modern touch. Their entire menu is based on the concept of “ Slow food” including regional and seasonal products. You can also buy local wines and liquors at Rhine-Hotel Bacharach. It’s definitely the place to stay in Bacharach.

My second favorite village for a sightseeing cruise is Boppard. Winegrowing center, it is home to several prestigious Riesling wines. Viticulture in Boppard goes back to Roman times and with its 75 hectares, one of the largest wine-growing towns in the Middle Rhine.

Boppard is the perfect place to enjoy the romantic vibe of a typical Rhine village . I recommend to wander through its narrow streets and enjoy the terraces on the Rhine promenade. I also loved to explore the particularly well-maintained fortification walls.

Buy here your Rhine River Day Cruise Pass to Boppard

The main sights of Boppard are the ancient Roman fortress and the Electorial Castle, one of the few castles along the Rhine River that hasn’t been destroyed. Usually, castles were built on hilltops, away from the villages.

I highly recommend to include a wine tasting in Boppard in order to enjoy the locally produced white wine. Almost every restaurant will be pleased to give you an introduction to viticulture in the Rhine River Valley.

3. Sankt Goar

Goarshausen.

Sankt Goar is the last village before you reach the Lorelei Rock, it’s thus an extremely popular destination due to its central location in the Rhine Gorge. You can easily explore it in one day cruise from Koblenz.

The dock is only a few metres away from the historic town center.

Like other towns on the Rhine River, Sankt Goar has an impressive castle , Burg Rheinfels towering on a hilltop. The castle can be visited and you’ll enjoy a great view on the Rhine and on the sister town Sankt Goarshausen on the opposite river bank.

Buy here your Rhine River Day Cruise to St.Goar

Sankt Goarshausen with its own castles, Maus and Burg Katz, is connected by ferry to Sankt Goar.

You’re looking for something quirky ? Then the Doll and Teddy bear Museum might be for you! The museum hosts a large collection of puppets, soft toys, and puppets on over 3 floors. The items come from all over the world. (Sonnengasse 8, 56239 St. Goar, +49 6741 7270)

Did you know that Sankt Goar is home to the largest free-hanging cuckoo clock in the world? It is hanging outside a souvenir store and is about 3.5 meters high and 2 meters wide. Every hour, the little figures in the clock spin and of course, the cuckoo makes its appearance. The souvenir shop, family-run business is located on the road along the Rhine River. ( Heerstr. 131, Sankt Goar 56329, +49 6741 934120)

4. Loreley Rock

View on the loreley.

The river bend and its legendary Lorelei (or Loreley ) rock are an absolute must when visiting the Middle Rhine River.

rhine river day cruise, day trip, rhine river valley, attractions, reviews, prices, europe, castle, village, wine, germany, cologne, frankfurt, mainz, koblenz, rudesheim, boppard, bacharach, one day, full day, avalon, viking cruises, loreley rock, unesco,

Located between the winegrowing villages of St.Goar and Oberwesel , the steep, the 194m high slate cliff is the narrowest point of the Rhine river . Shrouded in legends, this place has been depicted in countless paintings, poems, and songs. However, the most famous one is by Heinrich Heine.

The legend says that Loreley, a melancholic mermaid sits on a rock, combing her golden hair. Sailors get easily distracted by her beauty and her mesmerizing song and smash their vessels against the rocks.

Indeed the place is particularly difficult to be navigated, but there was no ship wreckage during the last decades.

5. Oberwesel

Oberwesel is the first stop on your Rhine River Day Cruise after the Lorelei Rock. Also known as the ‘City of Towers and Wine’ , Oberwesel is an absolutely charming place to visit due to its old city wall, the picturesque old half-timbered houses and the ancient ruin Schönburg .

Buy here your Rhine River Day Cruise to Oberwesel

Oberwesel has the oldest, largest and best-preserved city fortifications on the Middle Rhine. Of the original 22 towers of the city fortifications, 16 are still preserved today. The “ox tower” is the most famous one. The town also used to count up to nine monasteries.

Oberwesel is also the perfect departure point to hike up to Maria Ruh will from which you’ll enjoy panoramic views on the Lorelei cliff. Just follow the RheinburgenWeg signage and you’ll reach the hill in 1h30. The hike is medium-difficult and includes climbing parts.

6. Stolzenfels Castle

Princess moments in stolzenfels castle.

You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to castle hooping on the Middle Rhine River, but I highly recommend to visit Stolzenberg Castle, probably the epitome of Rhine romantic.

Located at only 10 minutes by car from the city center of Koblenz, Schloss Stolzenfels towers on the left river bank and offers dramatic views on the Rhine and backcountry.

Buy here your Rhine River Day Cruise to Stolzenfels

Built in the 19th century on top of medieval ruins, Stolzenfels castle is one of the prettiest castles on the Rhine river thanks to its park, artwork and fanciful, majestic exterior. Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm rebuilt the castle in a Gothic Revival style and it opened again in 1842. The prince even opened up the castle to foreign visitors, something very unusual at that time.

Opening hours vary with the seasons and tickets cost ~5€. You can reach the castle by foot from Stolzenfels village.

7.  Marksburg Castle

Marksburg setting.

Although I didn’t visit Marksburg castle, I particularly liked the dramatic atmosphere around the castle. Whilst I was on the opposite river bank, I had the best view on one of the most well-preserved castles in the Rhine River Valley.

Towering above the of Braubach , the Marksburg is one of the principal sites of the Rhine Gorge UNESCO World Heritage Site. In opposite to other Rhine river castles, the fortress was used for protection rather than as a residence for royal families.

Of the 40 hill castles between Bingen am Rhein and Koblenz the Marksburg was the only one which was never destroyed. That means that the Marksburg was left basically unchanged since Medieval Ages.

Guided visits cost 7€ and can be arranged here .

From B 42, in the direction of Rüdesheim or Koblenz, use the exit to Braubach and follow the signs to “Marksburg”. You will find a spacious parking site close to the castle.

8. Visit Bingen

Mäuseturm in bingen.

Bingen was not only home to one of the most remarkable women in the Middle Ages, Hildegard von Bingen , but also a perfect stop during your Rhine River Day cruise.

Surrounded by vineyards, Bingen is one of the larger towns on the Rhine river. Some of the must-sees in Bingen include the wooden crane and the Klopp castle who has been destroyed several times during the last centuries. From here you’ll enjoy beautiful views on the town and on the river. The castle site also hosts a restaurant .

Buy here your Rhine River Day Cruise to Bingen

The icon of Bingen is the Mouse Tower ( Mäuseturm ) shrouded in historic traditions and legends. Located on a small island in the Rhine River just outside Bingen, it makes for a nice photo opportunity from the river bank or a boat.

The legend says that the cruel archbishop of Mainz, locked up the peasants of the town in a barn and set it on fire. He got chased out of his castle and halfway across the river to the tower by an army of mice who ate him alive.

I hope some of these, admittedly very personal, highlights of my visit to the Middle Rhine River Valley in Germany  could convince you to include the region in your travel plans.

We appreciated that we were well informed as to where our ship would be rocked on the day of embarkation. We also were notified of changes to our itinerary, because of river closures because of river closure, due to annual upkeep. I was not clearly informed that wifi was not included in my plan. That was very inconvenient. I would have liked to be given the opportunity to decide to include that in my package, even though it may have meant an extra cost. The Amadeus Star crew were magnificent! Arno, the cruise director, orchestrated the tour through the many unexpected changes that were cause by no fault of theirs. He quickly made alterations to the itinerary, that I am sure we’re very difficult for him to do, but we’re pulled off seamlessly. We passengers were shielded from the stress that would have been invoked in last minute changes to the schedule and instead we’re allied to enjoy a stress free vacation. All of the staff we very friendly and and helpful. I have endless examples, but for the sake of time I will just mention a few of the people who stood out to me. Elvira, was so welcoming and warm. She alway was available for the passengers and paid close attention to the small details, that personalized our cruise experience and made us feel important. Carlin our main server in the dining room was so efficient and friendly and funny. We loved him and it was sad to say goodbye to him and his team on the last morning of our cruise. Our cabin attendant was the invisible fairy who would clean and pick up after us everyday. When we passed him in the hall, he always greeted us with a smile. On our anniversary and on my husbands birthday, he mad beautiful towel sculptures and left them to greet us, in our cabin, at the end of the day. There are so many examples I could share, but suffice it to say that because of the wonderful crew on the Amadeus Star, our cruise experience will remain an amazing memory for us to keep and share! Mosel River Cruise and Charming Bernkastel Day Trip

Are you looking for one of the most charming things to do in Germany? Riding on a Mosel River cruise and exploring the beautiful town of Bernkastel is what you are looking for. Check out our recommendations!

No visit to Germany would be complete without a visit to the Mosel River Valley, taking a Mosel River cruise and a fantastic Bernkastel day trip. The stretch of the river that runs between Trier and Cochem, the middle Mosel, is one of our all time favorite drives in the country, maybe even the world.

Tourist Train in Bernkastel.

I know that sounds over the top, but the terraced vineyards climbing precariously up the steep valley walls, the crumbling towers and fortress ruins overlooking the river, and the quaint half-timbered villages along the banks make some seriously picturesque vistas.

Read our most popular articles on Germany! – Winter in Germany – Bavarian Christmas Markets ( + Itinerary) – Variations of Schnitzel – 5 Things You Didn’t Know about the Hofbrauhaus (Munich) – Fairytale Rothenburg and its Christmas Market

Also, in our opinion, the food and wine from the Eiffel region and the Mosel Valley in particular is some of the best the country has to offer. Whether you decide to take in the views through the windshield of your rented BMW, from the seat of your tandem bicycle, or sipping wine as your river boat cruises slowly on the water, we think you’ll fall in love with the Mosel River Valley as well.

Mosel River Cruise Leaving Charming Bernkastel.

Things To Do Around Bernkastel

About half way between Trier and Cochem lies Bernkastel, right in the heart of the middle Mosel. This is one of the most charming villages on the river. The town has survived throughout the ages with its roots going back to Roman times.

Most of the buildings in town, however, are younger than that having been built in the late middle ages about 400 years ago. And Bernkastel has it all. Multi-storied half-timbered buildings, castle ruins, vineyards perfect for hiking , outside cafes, beer gardens, river boat cruises, and some of the best festivals.

Things to see on a Bernkastel day trip-Half-timbered houses.

Bernkastel Day Trip

It doesn’t really matter which time of year you come, spring, winter, summer, or fall, Bernkastel old town is ready to show off everything the season has to offer. The flower boxes go up on the windowsills in early spring and bloom all through the summer and late into the fall.

Once the weather turns colder, however, the flower boxes come down and the pine garlands go up transforming the town into a Christmas dream. The narrow lanes and alleys leading to surprisingly open squares that with bubbling fountains, cozy cafes, half-timbered buildings leaning crookedly over the street, and a wineshop or too offering some of the best of the local Riesling.

Some of the main places to see in Bernkastel are:

  • Historic Market Square
  • Spitzhäuschen
  • Graachertor
  • Bear fountain
  • Candy Maker
  • Castle Ruins
  • Mosel Wine Museum

Bernkastel Day Trip - Marktplatz.

Start your walking tour of the old town in the historic market place. While the weekly farmers’ market no longer takes place here, this is the heart of the town and special events may be set up throughout the year.

The market itself is surrounded by some of the most impressive fachwerke (half-timbered) buildings and a richly ornamented fountain in the center of the square. Just off the square besides the Rathaus (town hall), is the Spitzenhausche, or little pointed house, that is the most charming tiny half-timbered house anywhere. Step into the street-front wine bar to try some local vintages.

Things to do around Bernkastel - River Cruise.

Leaving the marktplatz, wander along Romerstrasse towards the Graachertor. Shops, wine bars, and restaurants offer up pleasant distractions but the the richly decorated and colorful buildings are the real draw here. The tower itself was built in the 1300s as one of the old arched entries into the town and holds a small museum and a restaurant.

Interior of traditional candy shop in Bernkastel.

From here the vineyards beckon where walkers can climb up above the town for a view of the rooftops and the river below. Coming back into the town I always take the time for a stop at the historic candy-makers shop in the upper part of the old town. I love to watch the candy being pulled and stretched, molded and shaped, and cut into delectable bite size pieces.

Mosel Wine Festivals

We love a good wine festival, and the best one of all, our favorite is the Middle Mosel Winefest. Held on the first weekend of September, over our Labor day holiday, the Middle Mosel Winefest is a bucket list must.

It starts out with a fabulous parade, has food and wine booths set up all over town, and then a fantastic fireworks show in the evenings. The parade of vintners gives local growers the chance to show off the quality of their wines as they wind through the left bank town of Kues, across the bridge over the Mosel, and then into Bernkastel.

Hold up a tasting glass and try some free samples as the parade marches by. Be careful, though, Mosel wine is clean, semi-sweet, and fruity; easy to drink, maybe too easy when your glass is being constantly refilled. I had never been to a festival where free wine was dispensed in this fashion, and it was so much fun.

Carnival rides and games, festival food, and of course wine tasting is all on offer. The real highlight, though, is the fireworks display each night in which the illuminated battle takes place between the fortress above and the river below. The attacker starts to volley shots at the castle, it retaliates, and the grand finale is the castle burning down. I think I’ve been four or five times, and I still love it!

Bernkastel Wine Festival - It all starts with the grapes.

Other Mosel River Valley Wine Fests

If you can’t be in the Mosel Valley for the big Bernkastel fest, don’t despair, there’s sure to be something going on somewhere along the Middle Mosel region almost any weekend. For example, on the last weekend in May, the town has “Open Wine Cellar Days” when local vintners open their cellars, set up booths, and get to know their customers.

Another of our favorites is the Zeller Long table festival with its 300 meter long festival table winding through the center of the village. No matter what, however, there is sure to be wine tasting, wine festivals, or open wine cellar days on any given weekend throughout the spring summer and fall in one of the villages and towns along the Mosel between Trier and Cochem.

Bernkastel Christmas Market

If you’ve come to Germany for the Christmas markets , you won’t want to miss Bernkastel. The Old Town Bernkastel Christmas Market begins in the last week of November and runs to just before Christmas. Be sure to see the largest advent calendar in the Mosel river valley in the window of the apothecary on the old town market square.

Shop for traditional hand-made Christmas gifts, munch on some sugar roasted almonds, sip on mulled wine, and watch the wonder in children’s eyes at this magical festival. If you’re feeling adventurous, go on the Saint Nicholas Walk, a ten kilometer walk through the city with the jolly old elf himself, with stops along the way for mulled wine, hot chocolate, and other treats.

Castles on the Mosel

The Mosel River Valley isn’t quite as richly populated with fortresses and castles as, say, the larger and more popular Rhine valley. And it is that small, quaint feeling that makes the Mosel that much better than the Rhine.

Sure they both have castles, wine, half-timbered houses, but the Rhine is more industrious and bigger in every way, including the tourist crowds. Still, there were a few robber barons along the river banks of the Mosel. Not much remains of most of these forts but even the craggy ruins present a romantic landscape as you wind your way down the river.

One of these typical old ruins is the Burgruine Landshut sitting high above Bernkastel and overlooking the the sweeping curves of the middle Mosel river. Vineyards stretch off into the distance and the shining tiles of the town roofs lie below.

Hiking up to the ruins is a bit of challenge, but the views once there are definitely worth the climb. Take a break in the onsite restaurant in a renovated part of the castle ruins and enjoy the vista laid out before you.

Mosel River Cruise - Castle overlooking the river.

In Cochem, however, is one of the few rebuilt castles along the river. Cochem castle is a real stunner, perched atop a hill in the center of town overlooking the river.

The original castle was built in the middle ages and survived in some form or another until French occupying forces under Louis the XIV burned it to the ground in the late 17th century. The castle was rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style popular at the time in 19th century as a family residence.

Today Cochem Castle opens its gates for visitors around the world looking for a glimpse into life in Medieval Europe. It houses a large collection of renaissance and baroque furniture and art that can be viewed on one of the 40 minute guided tours.

Things to do aorund the Mosel River - Cochem Castle.

Power tip: If the climb up to the castle is out of the question, why not hop aboard the vintage bus, Burg Landshut Express, and let the driver do the work for you. Enjoy the view and ride in an old restored bus? Yes, please!

Mosel River Cruise And Boat Tours

Perhaps the most enjoyable way of  seeing the Mosel river valley is take a ride on one of the short river cruises. There are a variety of options for getting out on the river. There are one-hour trips that will take you out of the town a, around the bend and then back to town, intended to give the visitor a view of the surrounding countryside from the water.

Then there are half day trips that will float down river around a bend or too past a few towns and castles, and then back to the starting point. There is enough time on these trips for a glass or two of wine and a small meal aboard. Very cozy, very comfortable, very relaxing.

Longer full day trips can take you from one location on the river to another town where you can disembark, explore, and then return to the boat for a ride back down to the starting point. Check your schedule and makle time for at least a short ride on the river to get a real feel for what life was like moving slowly along the flowing water.

When is the Best Time To Go On A Mosel River Cruise?

As we’ve said, there’s no bad time to visit the Mosel river valley. However, Fall is, by far, the most popular, and for good reason. Late summer and early fall bring the best weather to the region.

The days are getting shorter, true, but the weather is beautiful and perfect for long hikes or treks along the river or up into the vineyards. The terraced vineyards clinging to the steep slopes of the valley are changing colors carpeting the hillsides in brilliant yellows oranges and reds. Of course, this is harvest time, so don’t be surprised to see local townspeople climbing through the vineyards harvesting grapes for the next years’ wine.

More importantly, this is wine festival season. Vintners are showing off their best at open wine cellar events, festivals, parades, or just on the side of the road. Stop and say hi, meet the locals, and enjoy a glass of crisp, white Mosel wine. Just be sure and have a designated driver.

Where To Eat

The Eiffel region is the first part of Germany that we ever lived, and we fell in love with its food, especially schnitzel and unique wines. One of our favorite spots in Bernkastel is on a small hill between the old town and the Castle. The Schützenhaus offers some of the best meals and views of the town, vineyards and river below. Sit out on the terrace with a glass of white wine and a cheese plate.

Another great meal can be found at the Am Doktorberg on the edge of the old town tucked away under the vineyards climbing out of the village.

Mosel River Cruise Dining Room.

Where To Stay

Most visitors to Bernkastel come for the day and then leave in the afternoon. This makes for some pretty crowded times, especially on the weekend. However, spending the night here should not be missed.

Once the day crowds leave the town becomes much quieter, the vineyards are more inviting, and the whole town is transformed into a twinkling medieval village right out of a fairytale.

Where to stay in Bernkastel - Riverside Hotel.

How To Get There

Getting around Germany is easy thanks to the excellent and efficient public transportation system. However, there are no trains running through the Mosel so you’ll need to take a bus into the valley.

Otherwise, we always recommend driving yourself. Having your own car allows for last minute changes, a chance to just follow the road, or make an unexpected turn to a new, unplanned adventure.

These are the often the best experiences. Leave the B-49 at Alf to continue up river on the B-421 and then B-53 to make your way to Bernkastel-Kues. Parking can be found in most towns and villages right on the river banks. Expect to pay a small fee of 2-5 euros.

How to get to Bernkastel - Take a tractor?

From Frankfurt

By public transportation.

Travel by train to Wittlich and then transfer to the 301 bus direct to Bernkastel-Kues.

Follow the A-3 autobahn in the direction of Cologne (Köln) and switch to the A-48 at exit 39 (Dreieck Dernbach). Stay on the A-48 to exit 4, Kaisersech and head south following the signs to Cochem.

In Cochem get on the scenic route B-49 and wind away upriver towards Trier. Feel free to stop as often as you like along the river for photos, walking, exploring castle ruins, or just being amazed at the scenery. Notable stops along the way are Cochem and Traben-Trauerbach.

Travel by train to Wittlich, and transfer to the 301 bus and ride into Bernkastel-Kues. The old town is just across the bridge from the bus stop.

Take the B-53 northeast and follow the river as it winds its way downstream to Bernkastel-Kues. Notable stops along this stretch of the river are Piesport and Mülheim. Overall driving time from Trier along the river is about one hour. Longer if you stop more often for photos and wine shopping in the small towns along the way.

Mosel River Cruise - View of the river.

Where Does The Mosel River Start And End?

One year we were feeling adventurous and decided to take a longer road trip along the Mosel river. We had been to the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz where the waters of the Mosel and Rhine rivers merge. But we had never been up river past Trier. We climbed in the car and took off up river to find the source of the Mosel.

A little past Trier the Mosel takes a turn to the south and forms part of the border between Luxembourg and Germany. Still further south the river runs right into France. By now we realized the scenic parts of the river were behind us. The steep valley walls, vineyards and castle ruins disappear as the land turns to flatter, rolling hills of farmland.

The Mosel river starts as a small spring in the Vosges mountains in the Alsace region of France which, coincidentally, is one of our favorite parts of France. The total length of the river is about 240 kilometers.

The Mosel valley is one of the 13 major wine regions in Germany. It produces mostly white wine using the Riesling grape in a variety of qualities and types. Breaking down all of the intricacies and minutiae of the German wine classification system is a bit too much for this article.

It is important to note, though, that Mosel wine has a slightly sweeter and fruitier quality than most but can be found in a variety of sweetness levels. Typical Mosel wines can be Trocken (dry),  Halbtrocken (half dry), or Liebling (sweet). With athe amount of sugar largely depending on the harvesting of the grapes. Spätlese (late harvest) is a semisweet wine while Auslese (select harvest) is sweeter still.

Later harvesting yields an even sweeter dessert wine known as Beerenauslese made from overripe grapes. One specialty wine the Mosel is known for is Eiswein which is made from grapes that have been allowed to remain on the vine until the first frost. This is a very delicate sweet wine, definitely give it a try while visiting the Mosel region.

Mosel Wine - Grapes grow on the steep hillsides.

As with most things in life, I’ve found my wine preferences have changed over the years. When I first moved to Germany (long ago) my love for wine started with the sweeter fruitiness found in the Auslese wines.

Later, with a little more maturity, I found the dry Halbtrocken Spätlese more to my liking. Now, it’s the drier Trocken Kabinett that I go for almost every time. Regardless of where you are in your own personal wine journey, however, you’re sure to find something to your liking in the Mosel wine region.

Germany is known for its castles, half-timbered houses, medieval cities, festivals, and food, wine and beer. Perhaps the one most accessible region in Germany that has the most to offer in all of these categories is the Mosel river valley. Maybe that’s why the area has always been on the top of our list of places to visit in Germany. Maybe it has got more to do with the beautiful scenery, or calming influence of the slow moving river. No matter what, I find myself being drawn back to the Mosel river and Bernkastel-Kues over and over again.

Passau Germany – One Day Visit On A Viking River Cruise

During our one day stop in Passau Germany on the Viking Grand European Tour, we explored this quaint town, learning about its history, culture, architecture, and people. One of the great things about Passau Germany is that its Old World charm is fairly contained, so it is easy to navigate through various attractions on foot.

You can plan your day in Passau, Germany to encapsulate all of the venues listed below, and if you find yourself too weary from traveling, you can easily stop in a local cafe or one of the Passau restaurants and take in the scenery. But please note, this charming town is going to steal your heart with its colorful facades  and lush greenery.

Passau Germany

Passau, Germany – Exploring Options During Your Cruise

Passau Walking Tour

One of the greatest things about visiting Passau Germany is that you can experience so much of what the town has to offer on foot. During the Walk Tour, we had the opportunity to visit so many venues and also experience the sights and sounds of the town, interact with locals, and see more than we might if visiting by car or tour bus. This unique experience is highly recommended, and fortunately you can experience so much of Passau Germany by walking along the city’s streets. Once you’ve had a chance to take in the charm of the town of three rivers, you’ll be glad you did so on this wonderful walking tour with Viking.

Veste Oberhaus (Old Bishop’s Residence)

Visit Veste Oberhaus for some of the most magnificent panoramic views of Passau Germany. Royalty ensues at this venue that was previously the residence of the former Archbishop of Passau Germany. The structure is delightfully majestic and globally imposing in stature. You’ll find the architectural pieces, rich colors, attention to detail, and shear size of the residence astonishing.

There is a special museum now housed within the Veste Oberhaus. You’ll also find a restaurant inside as well, serving local traditional cuisine with a palatial terrace that offers more noteworthy views. You can select from the lunch or dinner menus, or enjoy a coffee and snack while you take in the extraordinary views, especially of the three rivers converging at Dreiflusseeck.

Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall)

This government building is situated against the Danube River, and you’ll find it by its distinctive Gothic clock tower at the front. This is one of the more notable landmarks in Passau Germany. The building is constructed in a classical Venetian style, dating back to the 15th Century. On the facade of the building, you’ll find depictions of historical figures from Passau Germany. There are even water levels recorded for Passau Germany, with data logged from many years past.

Inside the Town Hall, you’ll find various noteworthy murals, each hand painted with immense attention to detail. An information center provides data, local attractions, and more history. There is a well-kept area in front of the Old Town Hall for people-watching, reading, or enjoying a refreshing beverage.

St. Stephan’s Cathedral and Organ Concert

St. Stephan’s Cathedral in Passau Germany

St. Stephan’s Cathedral

One of the most visited sights in all of Passau Germany is St. Stephan’s Cathedral. When you observe the grand nature of this castle style cathedral with its prominent Baroque style architecture, you’ll soon know why it garners such popularity. History even states that there were various churches built on the site where the present day cathedral stands as early as the year 730. Still a very historical building, the present day St. Stephan’s Cathedral was completed in 1688. There is incredible craftsmanship and pride in detail throughout the Cathedral, and the gold accents evoke an enchanting, magical style.

You’ll hear a grand pipe organ within the Cathedral, echoing traditional sentiments found throughout the Cathedral of Old World Europe. It is actually the largest pipe organ in Europe, and the sound is incomparable. Remarkably enough, the sound comes from the concentration of five organs performed by one organist. Concerts take place for roughly an hour, and seats tend to fill up quickly. The concert is not one to be missed during your visit to Passau Germany! This is a seasonal concert, but should not be missed if you are in town while it is operating.

Glass Museum Passau

While many venues in Passau Germany possess unique character and immense charm, this museum falls no short on either one. The Glass Museum offers such variety of exhibitions scattered among several floors, including art noveau and contemporary, with various colors and more types of glasses than you could ever imagine. It may be considered more of an exhibition or featured collections rather than a museum. Czech, Sisi, Art Deco, Nouveau, and other styles are all found here.

The architectural design of the Glass Museum is especially curious. There are many winding corridors, large doors, stairs that lead to nowhere, and compressed windows. It is truly one-of-a-kind, and for those interested in niche museums or glass, you will find it especially noteworthy.

Roman Museum Castle Boiotro

In Passau Germany, you’ll find a resounding history regarding the Roman settlement in this region of Europe. While this museum may be small in size, what it lacks in magnitude it more than makes up for through informative exhibits and visual demonstrations. Throughout the museum you’ll understand how the Romans assembled and lived in Passau, as well as how they interacted with other social groups during the time period.

The museum is well-kept and overall beautiful. It even features a notable children’s play area and greenery out front, very suitable for relaxing before or after your museum visit.

MMK Passau – Museum of Modern Art

For those familiar with Modern Art, you’ll find many lesser known local artists with their works prominently on display in the small town of Passau Germany. The historical building is well preserved, with an eclectic format and flow to the collections featured here. There is also an excellent cafe housed within the museum.

Schaibling Tower

Located on the south side of Passau Germany Old Town, one could sit outside at Schaibling Tower for hours. Whether it is catching up with an old friend, enjoying a relaxing walk, reading a captivating book, or enjoying a meal, this popular landmark offers enchanting river views unlike any other.

The Schaibling Tower is likely named after the cone shape dome at the top. There is an exceptional closed passage to the house, a unique feature of this landmark. You have another prime spot to watch the water buses departing to various destinations, as well as take memorable photographs of your travels.

Passau Dachshund Museum

A small museum located within the city center of Passau Germany, for those who love the German Dachshund canines, you will fall in love with the displays at this quaint museum. Featuring notable collections of Dachshund art, there are all kinds of unique figurines on display in glass cases. The collection is fairly small, but truly a one-of-a-kind ode to a very loved breed of dogs by this country. The proprietors operate the museum as a gift shop as well.

Dreiflusseeck

When visiting Passau Germany on the water, you’ll descend upon Dreiflusseeck, a crossing where the Inn and Ilz Rivers meet the Danube. This picturesque sight is the confluence of the three, where you’ll find a beautiful outdoor park to lounge, read, enjoy a meal, or take memorable photographs. The boats traveling in the background, cascading along the water, makes for magnificent scenery. There’s even a variety of ducks frolicking in the river.

If you’re lucky enough to visit during springtime, the flowers blooming make for quite the natural backdrop. Even during the wintertime, people visit the park bundled up, watching boats go by and admiring the Christmas decorations. This is a beautiful landmark in Passau Germany visited by tourists, locals, couples, groups, and all enjoy Dreiflusseeck.

Hike Passau Hills

If you are looking for an active adventure, might I suggest hiking the Passau Hills? This activity will give you incredible views and a workout you won’t soon forget.

These are best captured in the city center of Oberer Stadtplatz, Silberzeile. This is a convenient plaza where you’ll find shopping, restaurants, parks, and more for people watching. The city is fairly small and not densely populated, but exploring this small town is a great way to spend a few hours or so during your trip to Passau Germany.

A notable landmark in Scharding is Schlosspark. A small park along the Inn River, it is a well-kept park and hidden gem in Scharding. Filled with lush greenery, this is a secret spot to relax along the river. It is a bit of a hike to make it up to the park, but well worth it for the clean air, extraordinary views, and serenity in store at Schlosspark.

Scharding is a quick drive from Passau and on this tour you will take a coach over to the city where you will get a walking tour and then hop on a boat for spectacular views from the river. Additionally, while on your boat tour of the city, beer and pretzels are passed while you take in the marvelous views of the architecture that lies along the river.

Salzburg Highlights

If the Sound of Music is more your thing, skip Passau and head out on this tour back to Austria to see famous filming locations from the movie.

Additional Information About Passau:

  • Your stop in Passau Germany with Viking River Cruises will be for half a day. During our time in this gorgeous city, we took the included morning walking tour with a guide and then also did the afternoon trip to Scharding, Austria. There was plenty of time to accommodate both and to have lunch in between back on the ship. You can easily do two tours here (both a morning walking tour and an optional afternoon excursion).
  • Alternatively, you can venture out on your own. I would recommend at a minimum taking the included walking tour just to get some knowledge of the city from your guide and to see a few places. I know for myself I learned a lot from the guides who have first hand knowledge of the areas. This is information you would not normally get if you are on your own.
  • The Salzburg Highlights trip was just over 8 hours. If you do take this tour, you will not be seeing any of Passau Germany. You will have to make that decision. However I did speak to people who went on that tour and they raved about it. If you are a big fan of the Sound of Music, it sounds like that was the tour to do! Unfortunately I could not do everything so I had to make a decision. I did truly love the walking tour of Passau and visiting Scharding, Austria. Picking tours might be tough here, but you are going to have a wonderful time in this port with Viking.
  • Passau was easy to navigate both on foot and to get a taxi. We needed to go to the mall to buy a camera lens and it was very easy. So that is one way you can get around if you are in a pinch for time.
  • Also, do not forget to grab your tour card and passenger card before exiting the ship so the staff know you are not on board.

Viking River Cruises’ Romantic Danube: How To Make The Most Of Every Stop

River cruising is a popular way to get the ease and convenience of a cruise while enjoying a more intimate experience.

Viking River Cruises is one of the most recognized names in the industry, and we had the chance to take their eight-day Romantic Danube cruise in the wintertime. The cruise stops vary from year to year and season to season, but each version has stops in Germany, Austria, and Hungary.

During our trip, we wanted to indulge in one of our favorite travel hobbies: visiting different European Christmas markets . Not only did we immerse ourselves in many memorable Christmas markets, but we also explored some charming, beautiful, and historically important towns.

Viking River Cruises’ Romantic Danube offers so many different ways to optimize your time. Our experience was absolutely magical, and we wanted to share some suggestions for how to make the most of every stop on this unforgettable itinerary.

We were guests of Viking River Cruises on their Romantic Danube itinerary. All opinions expressed are our own and are based on our experiences.

Nuremberg, Germany

The Romantic Danube itinerary varies, sometimes beginning in Hungary and other times in Germany. The stops may vary slightly as well. But wherever your specific journey takes you along this beautiful river route, you’ll find a lot to explore.

Our itinerary began in the German city of Nuremberg . Steeped in World War II history, it witnessed the rise and fall of the Third Reich. History buffs can visit the Nazi Party Rally Grounds , the Nazi Documentation Center , and other historical sites.

But as the second-largest city in Bavaria (after Munich ), Nuremberg also has lots more to offer. The Old Town features beautiful half-timbered houses along with the medieval Imperial Castle . Art lovers can visit the home of German Renaissance artist Albrecht Durer , explore the Germanisches Nationalmuseum , and enjoy numerous art galleries around town.

The food is incredible in Nuremberg, so we recommend having at least one meal or hearty snack ashore. Don’t miss the city’s skinny German sausages served three to a roll or on a plate with sauerkraut or potato salad. Paired with a frosty local beer, it’s a perfect meal.

Stop by the open-air Hauptmarket in the city center for a colorful look at local produce, flowers, handmade gifts, and delicious food specialties. If you happen to be there during the holiday season , you’ll see the transformation of the Old Town into a winter wonderland where over 180 vendors make up the Christkindlesmarkt . Stalls display art, local products, handcrafted goods, and treats of the season. Glittering lights and fresh greenery enhance the festive atmosphere.

Regensburg, Germany

A well-preserved medieval city on the northern portion of the Danube River, Regensburg boasts some of the most interesting historic buildings in Bavaria.

The Altes Rathaus is a bright yellow building dating to the 1200s. The Thurn und Taxis Palace is the impressive residence of an aristocratic family that had amassed a fortune from postal operations in the early 1800s. During the holiday season, a Christmas market springs up on the castle grounds. The Porta Praetoria comprises the ruins of a gateway made of rough stone blocks dating to the 13th century. Neupfarrplatz, a Roman fortress built during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, was later home to one of the first Jewish communities in Germany. The ornate German Gothic Saint Peter’s Cathedral is worth seeing, too. Walk across the Old Stone Bridge, a pedestrian walkway over the Danube, and then turn to see the colorful clock tower.

A UNESCO World Heritage site , Regensburg also has great food. The Historische Wurstkuchl , or Historic Sausage Kitchen, is 1,000 years old and the oldest sausage kitchen in Europe, maybe even in the world. If you have time, sit a while at the Weltenburger am Dom , a restaurant and brewery right next to the cathedral. Try the amazing schnitzel with a beer from Weltenburg Abbey, the oldest monastery brewery in the world.

Passau, Germany

Right on the Germany-Austria border, Passau is a picturesque city. It’s known as the City of Three Rivers, since it’s where the Danube, Ilz, and Inn Rivers come together. Something you won’t find in many other places is a wasserstand , a chart depicting high water marks from floods in the city center. It’s drawn on a wall of the old town hall as a reminder that while being at the confluence of three rivers may be beautiful, it is not without risks.

Art is important to Passau, with the city’s modern art museum and a unique glass museum containing more than 30,000 European pieces of art glass. Check out the fun Artists’ Alley, where cobblestones painted in bright colors line the streets and darling boutiques hold plenty of unique souvenirs.

Passau is home to one of the largest pipe organs in the world, with almost 18,000 pipes. It resides in the gorgeous baroque Saint Stephen’s Cathedral. If the timing is right, you could catch a concert for an unforgettable experience.

Modern pleasures in Passau include the Klostergarten, a contemporary park that is home to farmers markets and gardens. It lights up at night with dramatic lighting, water features, and choreographed fountain displays, perfect for enjoying on an evening stroll.

Melk, Austria

As the Romantic Danube cruise moves into Austria, you’ll spot the Melk Abbey standing grandly atop a hill overlooking the Danube. More than just an abbey, it’s a complex comprising seven courtyards, a beautiful church, and a library with over 90,000 volumes and rare manuscripts.

Melk is located in the Wachau Valley , where small towns and monasteries flourished during the Renaissance. The scenery is stunning. Several castles — including Schloss Schallaburg , Schloss Artstetten , and Schloss Schonbuhel — beg to be explored, and the ruins of other castles dot the landscape.

If you’re interested in local food and beverages like we are, the Wachau Valley is renowned for its apricots and wine. In addition to excellent wines made from grapes such as riesling and gruner veltliner, apricot wine, apricot dumplings, apricot cake, and some unique items made with saffron are also local specialties.

Krems is the town at the other end of the valley and is sometimes part of the Romantic Danube itinerary.

Vienna, Austria

Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. There are so many things to see, do, and eat that you will not want to waste a moment of your time there.

We have to put the Viennese culinary culture at the top of our list. Famous desserts like sacher torte and apple strudel, gorgeous coffeehouses, incredible farmers markets, delicious street food, and a wide range of restaurants provide many opportunities to sample local delights. Most people don’t know that Vienna is also home to its own wine regions, making the local wine a great option to try.

Music is another highlight of Viennese culture. The City of Music has many venues from which to choose. The Musikverein , Vienna State Opera , Wiener Konzerthaus , and Schonbrunn Palace offer concerts featuring everything from the classical music of Mozart and Strauss to jazz, pop, and rock. There are also cafés, bars, and nightclubs offering food, drinks, and music in a more intimate setting.

World-renowned palaces like Schonbrunn and the Hofburg as well as sacred spaces like Saint Stephen’s Cathedral and Karlskirche impress with their magnificence.

Of course, Vienna also offers gorgeous Christmas markets in stunning venues like the City Hall, Belvedere Palace, Maria Theresien Square, and Schonbrunn Palace, among others.

Animal lovers can check out the elegant Lipizzaner stallions performing at the Spanish Riding School or visit Vienna’s Tiergarten , the oldest zoo in the world.

Budapest, Hungary

Budapest is actually three different cities: Buda and Obuda on the west side of the Danube  River and Pest on the east side. That only adds to the intrigue of this unique destination.

The quieter Buda side has hills and a funicular, which you can ride to the top for a panoramic view of the Pest side. The City Park is a lovely place to stroll, with botanical gardens, a municipal zoo, the Budapest circus, and a museum of agriculture. There’s also a huge timer containing sand that takes a year to go from the top to the bottom. It’s started all over again every New Year.

The Great Market Hall features three floors of local produce, prepared delicacies, crafts, and souvenirs. If you like to shop, be sure to stroll along Vaci and Kiraly Streets, pedestrian roads full of touristy joints as well as fun local shops and cafés.

Budapest has several spas and thermal baths in which you can relax while also getting your history fix; many of these structures have been around since Ottoman times.

Budapest also boasts several phenomenal holiday markets, including the Advent Feast at the Basilica , considered among the best Christmas markets in Europe.

The folks at Viking River Cruises know that the spectacular Hungarian Parliament Building is a vision at night. They generally provide an opportunity to see it while you’re on the water and make a picture-perfect memory to last a lifetime.

What To Know Before You Go

Viking River Cruises offers several excursions as well as a variety of add-ons. Be sure to take time before your departure to explore what interests you and book anything extra well in advance because space is often limited. While the ship is comfy, the service delightful, and the onboard activities lots of fun, be sure to get out and explore at every stop. There is so much awaiting you on your Romantic Danube journey.

Day Trip Rhine and Main River Boat Cruises from Frankfurt in Germany

Riverboats depart frequently from Frankfurt for day-trip excursions and pleasure cruises on the Main and Rhine River in Germany.

Primus Line Boats in Frankfurt am Main for river boat cruises

Pleasure cruises on the Main and Rhine rivers are easy to enjoy from Frankfurt am Main. Primus and KD boats have several sightseeing cruises on the Main River – often with meals or after-work drinks – allowing passengers to enjoy views of the skyscrapers of Germany’s top banks and financial institutions. Longer day-trip cruises go to other destinations on the Main River and even on the Rhine. Buy tickets online for Primus or KD panorama one-hour cruises in Frankfurt.

Although it is possible to cruise to the Middle Rhine and the Loreley Valley from Frankfurt am Main, many visitors may find taking the train to Rüdesheim or other Rhine towns a better option. See By Train to Day Cruises on the Rhine River from Frankfurt for details.

River Boat Cruises from Frankfurt am Main

Frankfurt is a popular departure point for riverboat cruises – both for multiple-day cruises and shorter day excursions. Several cruise lines call at Frankfurt but the biggest operators of day-trip cruises are Primus Lines and KD . It is generally easiest to stick to the line with the most departures, as prices are very similar.

Cruises on the Main River from Frankfurt are possible year-round — even a few times in January and February. The main cruise season is from April to October when cruises depart daily. During winter, except for the Advent Christmas market period, cruises are very limited and mostly on weekends only.

Day-trip excursion boats depart mostly from the northern shores of the Main River near the Eiserner Steg (pedestrian bridge). It is a short walk from the Römer square at the heart of Frankfurt’s old town .

Day-trip pleasure cruises from Frankfurt may be divided into four basic groups:

  • Short circular sightseeing or panorama cruises beginning and ending in Frankfurt lasting generally an hour or two. (Very frequent)
  • Half or full-day cruises on the Main River mostly to destinations upriver from Frankfurt. (A few times per month)
  • Full-day cruises from Frankfurt to destinations on the Rhine River. (Very limited — using the train is a better option)
  • Event and theme cruises (reservations are usually essential).

Circular Sightseeing Panorama Pleasure Cruises from Frankfurt

Cruise Boats in Frankfurt

The classic Frankfurt am Main circular sightseeing panorama cruise trips are 50 minutes upriver turning back near Gerbermühle or downriver turning at the Griesheim Schleuse (lock). Combining the upriver (Mainaufwärtz) and downriver (Mainabwärtz) cruises is hardly more expensive than a solo trip.

From April to October, these cruise boats depart daily at least seven times (more on Sundays). In March, boats depart on most weekends as well.

These panorama cruises are easily booked online for either Primus or KD boats .

A similar hour-long cruise departs a few times per month late at night as Sky-Light Tours to show off the lights of Mainhatten (Main + Skyscrapers reminding of New York + a lot of wishful thinking!). Departure times range from 20:30 to 22:00 depending on the time of sunset.

Day-Trip River Cruise Excursions on the Main from Frankfurt

The Maria Sybilla Merian, Primus Line's newest boat, in Frankfurt am Main.

A few times per month, day-trip excursions are possible from Frankfurt am Main upriver to Seligenstadt and even all the way to Aschaffenburg.

Seligenstadt is closely associated with Charlemagne and the main sight here is the Romanesque basilica that dates partly back to 830. Aschaffenburg is much larger and more interesting. Top sights in Aschaffenburg include the largest Renaissance castle in Germany, the Pompejanum (a copy of a Roman villa from Pompeii), and a collegiate church.

Cruise times from Frankfurt are around 3h30 to Seligenstadt and five hours to Aschaffenburg (slightly faster coming back). Combination tickets are available to do one leg of the journey by train.

The ship usually returns from Seligenstadt and Aschaffenburg two hours after arriving. In between, the riverboat offers local circular sightseeing cruises on the Main.

Day-Trip Cruises to the Rhine from Frankfurt am Main

A few times per year, it is also possible to cruise from Frankfurt am Main to Rhine River destinations including Rüdesheim , the Loreley Valley , Mainz , Wiesbaden , and occasionally Heidelberg on the Neckar River . Often, for these excursions, a bus is used one way.

The most frequent cruise is from Frankfurt down the Main River to Mainz and then on the Rhine River to Wiesbaden and Rüdesheim, returning a few hours later to Frankfurt. It is usually possible to change to another boat in Rüdesheim to cruise down the Loreley Valley and return by train from St Goarhausen.

Cruising times from Frankfurt am Main is around 3h to Mainz, 3h30 to Wiesbaden-Biebrich, and 5h to Rüdesheim. The upriver returns are slightly slower.

On the whole, most travelers may find it better value (both time and money-wise) to take the train from Frankfurt to Rüdesheim and cruise on the more interesting part of the Rhein from Rüdesheim rather than take the boat down the Main.

Special Event and Theme Cruises from Frankfurt

Boat Cruises with Fireworks in Frankfurt

In addition to the regular circular sightseeing and scheduled cruises, many special events and theme cruises also depart from Frankfurt. Reservations are usually required.

Special event cruises are available year-round including New Year’s Eve cruises , cruises to see firework displays, theater, and music performances. Meal cruises often celebrate the start of a new harvest season.

After Work Shipping cruises depart a few times per week with drinks and a disco. Similar cruises are occasionally also available for departures from Mainz and Wiesbaden-Biebrich.

Tickets & Deals on River Cruises from Frankfurt am Main

Primus Lines sells only return tickets – this means that the price is usually the same whether returning by boat or by train to Frankfurt (but around €4 more expensive from Aschaffenburg or St Goarhausen, where an additional ticket must be bought at the station). Indicate at the time of purchase whether the return will be by boat or train.

Ticket prices for Primus Lines and KD in Frankfurt often differ only by a few cents making it hardly worth waiting for a later boat if cruising spontaneously.

Combinations tickets (RMV Kombitickets) allow one leg of the journey by train, which is faster and allows travelers to stay longer at a destination than the boat does. If the RMV Kombiticket is bought in advance from Primus Lines, passengers can take the train to the destination, cruise back to Frankfurt, and continue to use public transportation from the Main to home. Alternatively, buy the combination ticket with the boat ticket to return after the cruise by train.

Reservations for regular circular and scheduled cruises on the Main and Rhine are usually not necessary but it is easy to buy tickets online for Primus and KD panorama cruises . Special event cruises usually require reservations, although available tickets are sold until the boat departs.

Children under 6 years (4 for KD) cruise free (maximum three children per paying adult) and children 6 to 14 pay half price.

Dogs and bicycles are mostly transported for free. Primus does not have a free-cruise-on-birthday policy – for such savings try KD lines . KD also has a more generous discount policy for seniors – starting at 60 years rather than 63 as on Primus – and for students up to 27 years old.

Inside the Olympic effort to clean up the River Seine — and why it may be spoiled by a rainy day

PARIS — Meandering down the Seine R iver , the light breeze, gentle current and the sun’s glistening rays weren’t the only things the three kayakers were hoping to catch on a warm spring day — they were also on the hunt for garbage.

By attaching nylon stockings to the side of their kayaks, they scooped up even the smallest fragments of plastic, as well as the everyday detritus of life in the French capital that washes to the river’s surface every time it rains. The members of the Arc de Seine Kayak club then sent what they had collected to be tested for bacterial levels.

“My kayak capsized this morning and I’m OK,” a laughing Paul Maakad told NBC News on Sunday, at the Pont de Sevres in central Paris.

But while Maakad, 40, and his fellow boaters said they were not scared of getting into the river, with less than 100 days to go before the 2024 Paris Olympics , fears are growing that events like the marathon swim, the triathlon and the paratriathlon could be postponed or canceled because of high pollution levels, or that the flotilla-based opening ceremony could be affected.

Kayakers Paul Maakad, Sarah Birden and Vincent Darnet with the trash they collected from the Seine.

Earlier this month, Tony Estanguet, the president of the Paris Organizing Committee, expressed confidence "that it will be possible to use the Seine,” but admitted that the swimming leg of the triathlon could be canceled if pollution levels are too high. "It’s what we want to avoid, of course,” he said .

His comments came days after a French charity warned that bacteria, including “pollution of fecal origin,” was far higher in the river than permitted.

As part of an ambitious plan to open up the Seine to public swimmers by 2025 — after being illegal for 100 years because of dangerously high pollution levels — France has spent 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) on altering and upgrading the city’s antiquated sewage system, which now includes a 13-million-gallon overflow tank called the Austerlitz Basin.

But in August, the swim portion of the test marathon event was canceled because the river failed pollution tests.

As the starting gun to the Games approaches, Fluidion, one of the companies the city of Paris contracted to monitor bacteria in the water, exclusively shared its findings with NBC News.

Paul Maakad and Vincent Darnet are members of the Arc de Seine Kayak club.

A sample of water collected by the Pont Alexander III bridge, in the city’s center, showed E. coli levels two-and-a-half times the level considered safe for swimming.

But that in itself isn’t necessarily a concern for the Games themselves, according to Dan Angelescu , the CEO of Fluidion, a tech company that develops water testing products.

“In the summer when there is a lot of sunlight, when the water flow, river flow rate is really low, and when there is no rain for several weeks, let’s say two or three weeks without rain, you can actually reach really good water quality conditions,” he said in an interview this month.

But he added that even a small rain event could make E. coli levels shoot up.

“You may swim in very polluted water and nothing may happen to you, or you may swim and you may develop itches, or you may develop infections, or you may catch a strain of E. coli that may be pathogenic," he said. "Those aren’t very common, but they exist, and that could get you really sick.”

Austerlitz Basin Paris River Seine

But he cautioned that exposure to other pathogens associated with the presence of E. coli could lead to contracting a norovirus, diarrhea “or you could get certain diseases that can really kill you.”

In a bid to boost public confidence, French President Emmanuel Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo have both promised to swim in the river to prove its cleanliness.

Pierre-Antoine Molina, a director of public policy in Paris, said he would follow suit. In an interview Monday, he said that water pollution in the river “has been gradually improving.”

He added that the work to upgrade the city's sewage system had led to the modernization of wastewater treatment plants and an improvement in the network that separates wastewater and rainwater.

Olympic organizers began working with Paris officials three years ago to clean the Seine, a venue for Paris 2024 Olympic swimming events.

“It’s an ancient city going back to Roman times, so inevitably that’s a big task,” he said, adding that a lot of buildings had been gone up after World War II “and the sewage system did not always cope.”

Around 30 miles downstream from Paris, Edouard Combette, 50, showed no fear as he plunged headfirst into the storied waterway, which has inspired artists like the impressionist painter Claude Monet.

“Life is good here,” he said after coming up for air, adding that he didn’t know whether the water was completely safe.

“Don’t drink the water. You can swim, but don’t drink,” he said. “I haven’t heard of anyone dying or getting sick.”
