Back in time on magical Mackinac Island Location Information Description

The tiny treasure known as Mackinac (pronounced "Mackinaw") Island remains much as it was when the first Europeans settled the island centuries ago. Folks get around here by foot, by bicycle or by horse... because motorized vehicles are not permitted on the island. Although the year-round human population is only about 600 residents, the horse population can be as high as 500 during the summer months!

A sightseeing tour by horse-drawn carriage reveals all that is magical about Mackinac Island and is sure to be a highlight of your Michigan tour. You'll see Fort Mackinac, built by the British to guard the Straits of Mackinac during the American Revolution, as well as "downtown" Mackinac Island with many historic homes and grand Victorian cottages. You'll also learn more about your celebrated hotel at a presentation by a local resident historian who shares unique anecdotes about this famous landmark. The remainder of the day is yours to explore the island as you please; you're bound to discover things that capture your interest.

An architectural gem in Midland Location Information Description

Midland, United States

Leaving peaceful Mackinac Island behind via ferry to the mainland, continue on to Midland, where you’ll explore the home and studio of noted 20th-century architect Alden B. Dow, son of the founder of the Dow Chemical Company, who was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. Dow's innovative use of geometric planes, angles and landscaping elements to integrate his home into its natural surroundings has earned the home the designation as a National Historic Landmark. Arrive late afternoon at your riverfront hotel in Bay City, where you'll have dinner at your leisure this evening.

Dearborn, United States

Continue on to Dearborn, a city instrumental in America's automobile culture, where a guided visit to The Henry Ford is a fascinating, "must-do" experience on any Michigan tour. Historic trains, automobiles, airplanes and more help illustrate the American experience of progress and innovation between 1800 and 1950 – along with Dymaxion House, created by R. Buckminster Fuller; and the homes and workplaces of ground-breaking innovators such as Thomas Edison, the Wright Brothers and Harvey Firestone.

Tonight you'll begin a two-night stay at The Dearborn Inn on the Ford Motor Company grounds. During dinner at the hotel tonight, enjoy a Tauck Exclusive – a private Motown musical performance by a live band.

Salacia Nile Cruise over Christmas

Tour operator.

It's easy to see the world's sights. To stand in long lines, push through the crowds, and generally have the same standard-issue vacation as everyone else. But that's not good enough for us, and it's not good enough for you. We believe that travel should be easy. It should be fun. It should be worth your time and the price you paid. It should re-energize and transform. And above all else, it should be beyond the ordinary. Because how you see the world matters.

In 1882, Herman Tauck arrived in New York City from Germany in search of the American dream. His determination and values were passed on to his son, Arthur Tauck, who would realize that dream. With ingenuity and an innovative spirit, Arthur started Tauck Motor Tours, a travel company that would give birth to a new industry. The first tour, through the back roads of New England, was created by this 27-year-old in 1925. It embodied the same successful formula used by Tauck today: do the right thing. Craft a life-enriching travel experience; provide it at a single all-inclusive price; ensure there is great value for money; and rely on recommendations of satisfied customers to build a following and grow the business.

Two elements that did change over the next 90+ years – and three generations of Taucks – were the scope of destinations served and the variety of modes of travel used. Today Tauck delivers life-enriching travel experiences to every corner of the globe, incorporating small cruise ships, premium riverboats, trains, helicopters and more. What started as a New England motor coach tour company has truly evolved into an extraordinary global travel company. The fourth generation of Taucks is now involved in the company. While remarkable in any business, this seamless continuity across generations speaks to shared vision and values.

Throughout its history, the concept of “family” at Tauck has gone far beyond those sharing the surname to include hundreds of valued employees, and hundreds of thousands of loyal guests. The story of Tauck is the story of a unique American family company celebrating a passion for travel – a story that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Tour begins: 5:15 PM , Grand Traverse Resort & Spa.  A transfer is included from the Cherry Capital Airport to the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Traverse City, set amidst 900 acres of lush landscapes. Tauck has reserved Tower Rooms for your two nights at this great resort, named among the top 50 domestic destinations by Condé Nast Traveler . Join us tonight for a welcome cocktail reception and dinner.

You might be surprised to learn on your Michigan tour that the state's western coast is a land of vineyards and sandy beaches as well as really impressive sand dunes. This morning you'll see some of the spectacular Lake Michigan shoreline as you travel along the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and through the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore; ranging in color from the palest champagne to vibrant sienna, the constantly shifting dunes can be as high as 400 feet! This afternoon, board the 114-foot schooner Manitou for a private tall ship cruise on the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay. Wind up a great day with a winery tour and wine-pairing dinner at Chateau Chantal Winery on the Old Mission Peninsula in Grand Traverse Bay.

On your first stop today, music fills the air at the Music House Museum, displaying rare antique musical instruments and music-making machines from between 1870 and 1930; feel free to hum along during your visit! Then wind your way along the shoreline of beautiful Grand Traverse Bay as your Michigan tour continues toward the historic Straits of Mackinac; this strip of water connecting Lake Michigan and Lake Huron saw both booming commerce and some pretty spirited conflicts during the active fur-trading era of centuries ago. Stop in quaint Petoskey for lunch en route to Mackinaw City, from which a ferry carries you across the strategically important straits to historic Mackinac Island, where no cars are allowed... so you'll ride a horse-drawn carriage to your accommodation at the world-famous Grand Hotel, among the most celebrated hotels in America! This stately hotel's front porch, reputed to be the longest of its kind when it was built in 1887, is still a very popular gathering place for guests and local residents alike.

Leaving peaceful Mackinac Island behind via ferry to the mainland, continue on to Midland, where you'll explore the home and studio of noted 20th-century architect Alden B.

You might think you've landed in Bavaria today when you visit the little village of Frankenmuth, founded by German pioneers in the 1840s, for lunch and some free time to poke around. Tonight you'll begin a two-night stay at The Henry, Autograph Collection located just steps away from both Fairlane Town Center and the campus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn, putting you in the center of this premier city. During dinner at the hotel tonight, enjoy a Tauck Exclusive – a private Motown musical performance by a live band.

Begin the day with a look at a state-of-the-art automotive manufacturing facility when you take the impressive Ford Rouge Factory Tour in Dearborn, connecting the innovation of the past with the technology of the present and future. Then head to Detroit, where a city orientation tour introduces you to the "Motor City," historic home to the American automobile industry; see the Renaissance Center, Comerica Park (home of the Detroit Tigers), the Fox Theatre and more. Return to Dearborn, where the afternoon is free for your own further exploration and discovery amidst the living history and Americana of Greenfield Village; in true Tauck Style, when you take an included spin in a Model T, you won't have to pay for the gas! Please join us at our farewell cocktail reception and dinner this evening, and enjoy the opportunity to share your memories of your Michigan tour with those who shared the adventure with you.

Tour ends : Detroit. Fly home anytime. A transfer from The Henry, Autograph Collection to Detroit Metro Airport is included. Please allow two hours for flight check-in.

Welcome to Tauck's Celebration of Roses Event

We could think of no better way to launch our 100th anniversary year than by bringing back A Celebration of Roses , combining small group sightseeing tracks by day with exclusive private gala evening events held in premier venues. Images of Hollywood's halcyon days come to life in Beverly Hills and Hollywood, evoking a nostalgic look at the film industry and the stars who made movies shine... ringing in the New Year at an exclusive Roaring 20s themed party... and having the "Best day Ever!" from premier Grandstand seating at the 136th Rose Parade.

Take a trip back in time to when the talkies made history on a guided tour of Warner Bros. Studio and visit The Huntington, where rare books, art and gardens promise a feast for the senses. Stop to smell the roses at the Parade Barn, where a behind-the-scenes visit reveals make-up secrets of the Rose Parade floral stars. Attend an exclusive Roaring 20s New Years Eve party... the 136th Rose Parade from premier Grandstand seating... have lunch at a four-generation family-owned winery... visit the Academy Awards Museum, Peterson Automotive Museum or LA County Museum of Art as you choose – and have lunch at a sought-after beach club oceanfront in Santa Monica or optional tickets to the 111th Rose Bowl Game® in Tauck's optional reserved seats, picnic lunch in hand. Make the start of 2025 truly the best year ever with us at a "Celebration of Roses."

Tauck Exclusive – Rose Parade Float Barns

An exclusive look behind-the-scenes at the rose parade float construction barns.

Welcoming the New Year in like nothing else, Pasadena's Rose Parade has been drawing crowds for years with its creatively designed floral floats, every visible surface ingeniously covered with flowers, bark, leaves or seeds. With Tauck, you'll see the floats close-up, both before and during the Parade. First, learn what it takes to make these amazing floats when we take you behind-the-scenes at the Parade Float Construction Barns for an up-close look at the pre-parade preparations. Then, on New Year's Day, you'll see them in their full technicolor floral glory from the best seats along the parade route; we've reserved them especially for our guests!

Tauck Exclusive – Gala New Year's Party

Ring in the new year with our private gala new year's party.

Our "Celebration of Roses" Event is highlighted by the party of the year – our Tauck Exclusive New Year's Eve extravaganza at the Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel! Dress up in your dazzling Roaring 20s best and join us for a cocktail reception followed by dinner, before dancing the night away and toasting midnight in every US time zone with a glass of champagne and a memorable rendition of "Auld Lang Syne"!

Art masterpieces & spectacular gardens – a visit to The Huntington

Art museum... library... botanical gardens... explore the huntington.

Visit The Huntington in Pasadena, where an esteemed library of rare books and manuscripts include a Gutenberg Bible, a manuscript of the Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, books by Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus and numerous items relating to the US Civil War; an art museum of international renown showcases the works of European and American artists in galleries awe-inspiring to behold; and manicured gardens, meticulously curated like museums, are truly memorable

Beverly Wilshire, A Four Seasons Hotel

A fitting base for your "celebration of roses" event – beverly wilshire, a four seasons hotel.

If the historic Beverly Wilshire looks familiar, it might be for two reasons – its exceptional location and service – or because the hotel was the primary setting for the 1990s hit film "Pretty Woman." Originally built in 1928, the hotel has reinvented itself throughout the decades while retaining its popularity with the ever-changing "in" crowd. Located at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Rodeo Drive, you'll spend four nights in what is thought to be the best location in the heart of Beverly Hills – with designer shopping, fine dining and postcard-worthy views at your doorstep.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Travel Documents

Real ID Act - Effective May 3, 2023

Beginning in May, 2023, some state IDs will no longer permit you to board a domestic flight. Currently, some states are compliant, some have received extensions, and some are not compliant. Click here  to see the status of your state. If your state license is not compliant, you can use a passport in lieu of a valid state ID.

Note: The federal government has extended the deadline to May 3, 2023 for domestic airline passengers to secure a Real ID driver's license for use as identification at the airport. Travelers without a verified license or ID card will also have the option of showing other identity documents, such as a passport or military ID to board a plane.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling to the U.S., you should contact an embassy or consulate of the U.S. to determine what travel documentation is necessary. You may also log on to the U.S. State Department's Internet site by clicking here .

If you are traveling by air to join and/or depart from this tour within the U.S., please read the section above entitled Airline Security Measures to determine what travel documentation is required.

If you are a citizen of the U.S. or Canada who travels frequently between the two countries , you may benefit from the NEXUS program, which is a joint initiative between the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency and the Canada Border Services Agency that allows pre-screened and approved travelers faster processing at designated highway lanes in high-volume border crossing locations, at a NEXUS kiosk at several airports, and at certain marine reporting locations in the Great Lakes and Seattle regions. For further information, you may log on to the Nexus Internet website by clicking here. Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

Please note that you must present a license or photo ID to enter Warner Bros. Studio on "Hooray for Hollywood" sightseeing track.

Travel with Children Age Recommendations – The minimum age requirement on this Tauck event is 5 years of age or older at the time of travel. Based upon our experience with family travelers, we have a minimum recommended age of 10 for this event to encourage comfort and enjoyment for all of our guests. All children must be accompanied on activities by a parent or guardian. At least one guest in the traveling party must be 21 years of age or older in order to make a reservation. Please Note: Children under 5 years of age are not permitted on the Warner Bros. Studio Tour. Babysitting – Our journeys are designed for adults and children to share the wonder of discovery together. If you require babysitting services, your Tauck Director will put you in contact with the appropriate hotel staff with whom you may make babysitting arrangements. There is usually an additional fee for these services. Many hotels do offer on-site babysitting services; however, babysitting services may not be available at all of our hotels. Please note that our Tauck Directors are not responsible for providing babysitting services.  Safety and Welfare Responsibility ― We welcome the participation of child travelers on our exciting excursions. If you are traveling with a child on a Tauck journey, you have the sole responsibility for ensuring that that the child with whom you are traveling follows all rules of safety throughout the tour. By traveling with us, you release Tauck, Inc. and our partners of all liability for any risks and/or injuries to the child with whom you are traveling.

Weather in Southern California varies moderately with the seasons. December and January in the Los Angeles area are typically very comfortable with little rain, warm days and cool nights. In December and January the average high temperature is about 68 °F (20 °C) in the daytime and the average overnight low temperature is about 48 °F (9 °C). The region averages 1.9 in (49 mm) of rainfall in December and 3.3 in (85 mm) in January. The air is typically very dry, and the daytime temperatures can drop up to 20 °F or 11 °C by evening.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible and allows for layering. Casual, cotton resort wear is suggested. For the New Year's Eve Gala event, you may wish to dress up a bit – jacket and tie for men, casually-elegant outfit for ladies - but by all means be comfortable. A light jacket or sweater for late evenings or early mornings is recommended. Comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in are advisable.

Bathrobes and hairdryers are provided in each hotel room.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through the entire event, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription (or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you), a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for the Celebration of Roses Event:

  • Jacket and tie for men
  • Casually-elegant outfit for ladies
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for cloudy weather or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm functions (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Reusable zipper lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Please be sure to attach your Tauck luggage tag to your suitcase before leaving home!

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.
