This song seems biblical but I have no idea what its trying to say.

This is a liberal take on the biblical end times. One can see a reference to current problems of extreme self-centeredness. Reference to the Anti-Christ that the book of Revelation speaks of. Satan himself being an angry child after being tossed from Heaven for his self-ish desire to be hire than God. You can go line by line and reference many biblical references. Best to read the books of Daniel and Revelation in the Bible. I know Jonathan Cain--although not a professing Christian has used the bible as inspiration for other songs.

Meaning of One More by Journey

The song "One More" by Journey seems to convey a somber and introspective message. It touches upon themes of violence, injustice, and the struggle for survival.

In the verses, the lyrics paint a picture of a world filled with wicked prophets, where speaking the name of someone can lead to death. The "innocent age" described may refer to a time of purity and peace that has been corrupted. The birth of a king in a house filled with rage suggests the cycle of violence being passed down through generations.

The bridge highlights the suffering of the blind, metaphorically representing those who cannot see the truth or escape the consequences of sin. The phrase "lines are drawn where the boundaries begin" could refer to the division and conflict caused by differing beliefs or ideologies. The madness within humanity is depicted as breaking ten thousand souls, emphasizing the widespread destruction caused by these divisions.

The chorus repeats the phrase "one more" several times, which could signify the continuous cycle of pain and injustice. It portrays a cry in the night, a war left to fight, and lives being cut down by fire, all driven by anger and desire.

The second verse emphasizes the cold-heartedness of individuals, pride without shame, and the ongoing violence perpetuated by wicked prophets in the name of someone or something. It also hints at the downfall of society, with the heavens falling from the sky and brother turning against brother.

The bridge mentions wings of fire and drums of thunder, perhaps alluding to the chaos and destruction caused by warfare. It asserts that there should be no more of this violence, creating a plea for mercy.

The song closes with a repetition of the chorus, reinforcing the message of the continuous cycle of pain and tragedy caused by human aggression.

Overall, "One More" by Journey appears to explore the destructive nature of humanity, the consequences of violence, and the longing for peace and mercy. It encourages reflection on the cycles of injustice and the need for change.

In his old age Jacob now begins one more journey. Many years earlier, Jacob had fled his homeland in fear; now he leaves in the hope of a joyful reunion with a son he had thought was dead. But this journey also requires him to leave the land God has promised to him (Genesis 35:12). This journey will take him to Egypt, a place of danger for his father and grandfather (Genesis 12:10-20; 26:2). Can God be involved in this unexpected change of plans?

It is to Jacob’s credit that he begins this journey with worship—for even if a plan seems appealing to us, it will not succeed if it does not honor God. Though his own son had invited him to come and stay in Egypt, Jacob also surely knew of God’s warning that his descendants would be mistreated in a foreign land (Genesis 15:13). For this reason, God’s assurance is vital to his journey.

Perhaps it seems that God has placed you on a journey you did not expect: a new career, a new home, a challenging situation that stretches your faith. Hear today the great assurance that Jacob heard: “Do not be afraid. . . . I will go . . . with you.” God, who lived among us and journeyed with us in the flesh of his Son (John 1:14), will redeem and bless even the unexpected journeys of all who trust in him.

Lord, sometimes you send us to unexpected places in life. Give us wisdom to discern your leading in our journeys, and give us courage in knowing you are always with us, through Jesus, our Savior. Amen.

Apt-p on the move in 1990.

In June of 1988 the seven remaining APT-P cars were hauled on what, at the time, was thought to be their final short journey, from sidings at Crewe Electric Traction Depot , up the Chester line and onto the Heritage Site . Here they were manoeuvred onto specially laid track, once in position the temporary point over which the train had travelled was removed leaving the APT standing isolated from the other Heritage sidings.

Staff and volunteers then went to work to recommission some of the on board facilities in order that visitors could enjoy the comforts of the train and purchase drinks from the buffet bar.

During the summers of 1988 and 1989 the train was regularly used in this way, as well as serving as a workroom for visiting school parties.

With the sale of the land by the council for retail development it became clear that the APT must once again move. Several locations were considered, the chosen one being next to the West Coast Main Line on a narrow strip of land owned by British Rail.

The next problem was HOW ?? Laying track across the site was ruled out because the radius of curvature would be too small, cranes and helicopters were also mentioned! It was decided to call upon Econofreight Heavy Transport, a Middlesbrough based company who regularly work all over Europe moving unusual loads such as oil rigs. They surveyed the site and drew up a plan to split the train and move it one section at a time; because of the articulated bogies the only way it could be split was into four sections as shown in the table below -

In order that the NICOLAS Hy draulic, S elf P owered, E lectronically C ontrolled ( HySPEC ) modular transporters could be driven underneath each bogie, the entire train needed to be jacked up to a height of 1.3 metres.

Firstly all the primary traction rods were removed along with the C-APT aerials as they protrude below the level of the bogies, then 22 shallow holes were dug at each side of each of the bogies, into these steel plates were placed, a spreader beam was slid under the bogie and then hand jacks were used to raise the beam to enable the hydraulic climbing jacks to be placed between the beam and the steel plate.

These jacks were all linked to the same control unit so that they all lifted together. The jacks were so named as they climb up wooden blocks by lifting to allow wood to be slid underneath, then the ram was retracted and more wood slid in. The ram was then pushed out again raising the train by a further 100mm, more wood slid in and the process repeated, until the section was at the required height of 1.3 metres. The jacks were then replaced by stillages, to enable work to progress on the next section. Meanwhile the rails were removed from underneath the raised section, this was necessary as the transporters could only be used on flat surfaces. The rails were moved over the site ready for when they were needed to be put under the relocated train.

When the train was fully raised, the HySPEC transporters arrived. They had four driven axles, and each wheel could be turned independently to any angle, so if required the trailer could carousel on the spot. After being unloaded by crane one was taken for a test drive across the car-park and onto the newly prepared site, here problems were found. Due to the loose ground the wheels of the transporter tended to spin at high speed this combined with the deep tread on the tyres to produce a highly effective digging tool, soon the unit became well and truly stuck after being rescued by an excavator a decision was made to lay steel sheet over this area.

Meanwhile the other three transporters had been positioned under each of the bogies of the two car section (48602 & 48106). With an operator at the controls of each unit, the move began. Things got off to a bad start with all three transporters moving off sideways in the wrong direction, after an emergency stop which clearly demonstrated the APTs tilting capabilities as it lurched sideways, they then slowly moved off across the car-park occasionally stopping to make small adjustments and check their progress. The direction of travel then changed to bring the train down a prepared path and onto the tarmac drive, it was then forward again to bring it parallel to the ballasted area where the sleepers had already been laid. The transporters wheels were then turned through 90 degrees to enable it to move sideways over the new position, and after a number of small movements of each of the three trailers in turn to align it correctly, stillages were placed under the spreader beams and the transporters lowered and then removed.

The next day the same procedure was carried out for the two powercars in turn. Meanwhile the rails were put onto the sleepers under the newly positioned section, ready for it to be lowered again using the climbing jacks.

The movement of the power cars went quickly and smoothly, this then left just the three car section. There had been problems with jacking up of this section caused by the uneven weight distribution of the buffet car.

This section needed all four of the transporters and also the most manoeuvring, this involved zigzagging across the car-park, during this movement a loud bang was heard from between two of the coaches, this was found to be one of the dampers being pulled apart as one of the transporters had not been driven at the same speed as the rest; thus causing a tight curve between the two coaches. The move then continued towards the main drive, here one of the wheels began to spin. A quick acting volunteer shouted a warning and it was stopped just in time. This unit then continued down the drive and through the gates, and then, when the back end was on the drive, back out again and finally moved sideways over the sleepers. Here it was transferred to stillages to allow the remaining track to be laid. Then finally all the sections brought down to rail level.

The move was then complete, all that remained to do was to re-couple the sections together. With this done, the 415V 3-Phase electrical supply was connected in time for this summer season, the external paintwork has been cleaned and the buffet car is now being used again. This new position gives superb views of both the Manchester and West Coast Main Lines.

In one woman's mysterious drowning, signs of a national romance scam epidemic

By Jim Axelrod , Sheena Samu , Andy Bast , Matthew Mosk , Sari Aviv

Updated on: April 21, 2024 / 11:19 AM EDT / CBS News

The scammer who drained Laura Kowal of her $1.5 million nest egg and sent the widowed healthcare executive on a path that ended with her death in the Mississippi River, hundreds of miles from her western Illinois home, called himself "Frank Borg."

Frank drew Laura into a relationship after she connected to his profile on the popular dating website Match.com. Over months of giddy cellphone calls and in hundreds of florid emails, Frank manipulated her by drawing on publicly-posted details of her life to forge a bond, then induced her to invest with his online trading firm. As her skepticism grew and love waned, he strong-armed her into helping him dip his hands into the accounts of other victims.

"She had all these buckets full in her life, my mom did," said Kelly Gowe, Laura's daughter. "But there was this one bucket that was missing… and that was companionship. ... And that's ultimately where we're at now, is because of that."

kelly-laura.jpg

This increasingly common pattern — a modern spin that combines emotionally exploitative catfishing schemes with fast-moving investment and crypto scams — has served as the leading edge of an epidemic of pernicious scams targeting users of dating apps and websites. U.S. Justice Department and FBI officials told CBS News there is a public account of the toll: more than 64,000 American victims in 2023. But multiple experts told CBS News that those numbers significantly under-represent the true scope.

"They may be embarrassed that they have been victimized in this way," said Arun Rao, who oversees the Consumer Protection Branch at the U.S. Department of Justice. "They may be ashamed. They may be afraid to tell their friends or family."

With so many cases going unreported, he said, it is a national crisis unfolding largely in secret.

The human cost is likely more severe than law enforcement can quantify. Senior FBI officials told CBS News a striking number of cases are ending with victims dying by suicide.

"They shouldn't feel embarrassed or ashamed," Rao said. "These are sophisticated fraudsters who are preying on the human desire for affection. For connection with another person. And they are manipulating [victims] … using sophisticated technology."

Dating sites a "hunting ground" for scammers

A year-long CBS News investigation has found a growing number of federal agents, local police and online security experts believe the law enforcement response has, to date, failed to address the problem. The financial toll of known losses has swelled, from $500 million in 2019 to $1.14 billion last year.

Our investigation has found:

  • Local police officials from across the country are deeply frustrated by the lack of options to address the steady flow of complaints they receive, often from the adult children of divorced or widowed victims who have struggled to navigate the unfamiliar world of dating apps.
  • Federal agents struggle to keep pace with scammers who are often operating in plain sight in West Africa and South Asia.
  • Scammers have had increasing success in leveraging the promise of love to strong-arm victims into becoming unwitting co-conspirators, creating a legal mess for investigators who must decide how to treat victims who have openly committed fraud at the behest of the scammers, helping perpetrators launder funds swindled from others.
  • Law enforcement and security experts from dating and social media sites told CBS News those apps have been a "hunting ground" for scammers, and the industry has struggled to effectively curtail the problem. Several former insiders at the publicly-traded company with the largest market share, Match Group , criticized its record for protecting customers. Match Group CEO Bernard Kim defended the company's performance, telling CBS News: "We invest a tremendous amount of capital, incredible talent on trust and safety. It is the first and foremost top priority for us as an organization."

Victim's daughter says her mother "was endangered"

The tragedy of Laura Kowal touches on every one of those alleged weaknesses, unfolding in ways that now sound painfully familiar to the experts who are immersed in finding a solution to the online scam epidemic.

Hundreds of emails between Laura and "Frank" detail a long con, in which Laura is drawn in with promises of love and manipulated into sending more and more money.

Mark Solomon, president of the International Association of Financial Crime Investigators , said Frank followed a familiar playbook used by scammers to manipulate their victims.

"We don't blame a person that's on the side of the street and gets robbed with a gun pointed at them," said Solomon, who was the first to tell Kowal's story on the association's podcast, The Protectors , produced by Modified Media . "We can't do that to the victims of these frauds and scams either. These are professionals, they do it every single day. They're good at it."

The only anomaly in Laura's case, Solomon said, are the lingering questions surrounding her death.

evidence-bag.jpg

While several local detectives who investigated the final days and hours of her life appear persuaded that she died by suicide, they have stopped short of that formal finding. Her autopsy report, prepared in the days after her body was discovered in August 2020 floating in the river by a couple out fishing, says only that she died by "drowning."

Those who knew Laura best, however, believe the actions of her final hours are so incongruous with how she lived that she may have met her end at the hands of someone involved in the fraud.

Her daughter, Kelly Gowe, said she believes scammers, including the person using the pseudonym "Frank Borg," drove her mother to a point of feeling "like she was endangered. That she was going to die."

"It's the scammers," she said. "It's the criminals behind those emails. It's Frank Borg… this character. He killed my mom. And everyone that is involved in this scam in any capacity, that's moving the money, that's placing a phone call, that's hitting 'enter' and 'send' on an email — they're all responsible for my mom's death."

An eerie letter that Laura left behind, buried in a file drawer and found while Laura was missing, leaves more questions than answers.

"You were right in your judgment of me," Laura wrote to her daughter. "I've been living a double life this past year. It has left me broke and broken. Yes, it involves Frank, the man I met through online dating. I tried to stop this, many times, but I knew I would end up dead."

The reach of scammers has widened, officials say

Over the course of this week, CBS News will tell Laura Kowal's story. And, through her story, the reports will re-examine a problem many in law enforcement now believe has been grossly underestimated.

The head of the FBI's financial crimes sections, James Barnacle, said the reach of the scams has widened as overseas criminals have gained direct access to their targets: lonely Americans seeking a connection through social media and dating apps.

Match Group, the largest company in the online dating space, has tried to keep pace, telling CBS News it is now swatting down 44 spam profiles per minute. "We're working really, really hard every single day to make sure that people are authentic," Match Group CEO Bernard Kim told CBS News. "That's the key to our platform."

An effort to rally a stronger federal approach has a growing number of advocates — among them, Laura's daughter, Kelly Gowe.

Last year, Gowe left her job with a farm supply company and has dedicated herself to sharing her mother's story as a cautionary tale. At a speech to a women's group in Iowa earlier this year, she urged financial institutions and law enforcement to do more to protect victims.

"It wasn't until I learned that I was going to have a daughter of my own that I knew that, one day, she would know the full story of how her grandmother passed away," Gowe said. "I want her to know that her grandmother's story has the ability to educate people and to promote change, and ultimately her grandmother's story can save someone's life. And that's now the responsibility that I carry, to do that."

CBS News investigative reporters Pat Milton, Clare Hymes and Alyssa Spady contributed to this report.

Senate Approves Aid for Ukraine and Israel, Sending It to Biden’s Desk

The overwhelming bipartisan vote for the long-stalled $95.3 billion aid package capped a tortured journey for the legislation on Capitol Hill. President Biden is expected to quickly sign it.

Reporting from the Capitol

The Senate voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday night to give final approval to a $95.3 billion package of aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, sending it to President Biden and ending months of uncertainty about whether the United States would continue to back Kyiv in its fight against Russian aggression.

The vote reflected resounding bipartisan support for the measure, which passed the House on Saturday by lopsided margins after a tortured journey on Capitol Hill, where it was nearly derailed by right-wing resistance. The Senate’s action, on a vote of 79 to 18, provided a victory for the president, who had urged lawmakers to move quickly so he could sign it into law.

And it capped an extraordinary political saga that raised questions about whether the United States would continue to play a leading role in upholding the international order and projecting its values globally.

“Our allies around the world have been watching Congress for the last six months and wondering the same thing: When it matters most, will America summon the strength to come together, overcome the centrifugal pull of partisanship and meet the magnitude of the moment?” Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the majority leader, said on Tuesday. “Tonight, under the watchful eye of history, the Senate answers this question with a thunderous and resounding ‘yes.’”

In a statement minutes after the vote, Mr. Biden said he would sign the bill into law “and address the American people as soon as it reaches my desk tomorrow so we can begin sending weapons and equipment to Ukraine this week.”

“Congress has passed my legislation to strengthen our national security and send a message to the world about the power of American leadership: We stand resolutely for democracy and freedom, and against tyranny and oppression,” he said.

The House passed the package on Saturday in four pieces: a measure for each of the three U.S. allies and another meant to sweeten the deal for conservatives that includes a provision that could result in a nationwide ban on TikTok. It sent the legislation to the Senate as a single package that required only one up-or-down vote to pass.

Facing vehement opposition from his right flank to aiding Ukraine, Speaker Mike Johnson structured the legislation that way in the House to capture different coalitions of support without allowing opposition to any one element to defeat the whole thing. The majority of House Republicans opposed the aid for Kyiv.

The components of the bill are nearly identical to one that passed the Senate with bipartisan support in February. It includes $60.8 billion for Ukraine; $26.4 billion for Israel and humanitarian aid for civilians in conflict zones, including Gaza; and $8.1 billion for the Indo-Pacific region.

In addition to the package of sweeteners, which also includes new rounds of sanctions on Iranian and Russian officials, the House added provisions to direct the president to seek repayment from the Ukrainian government of $10 billion in economic assistance. That was a nod to a call by former President Donald J. Trump to make any further aid to Kyiv a loan. But the bill allows the president to forgive those loans starting in 2026.

Nine Republicans who opposed the Senate-passed aid legislation in February supported the bill this time. When Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma changed his vote on Tuesday, this time agreeing to advance the legislation, Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the minority leader, gave him a thumbs-up on the Senate floor.

“Seventy-five percent of the bill, the total funding, stays within the United States,” Mr. Mullin said on Newsmax, explaining his support for the bill. “That’s what a lot of people don’t realize. This goes to our defense industry; this goes to replenishing our munitions.”

Fifteen hard-right Republican senators who oppose aid to Ukraine voted against the legislation. Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, who opposed the measure but was one of three Republicans who did not vote on final passage, argued that Congress was “rushing to further bankroll the waging of a war that has zero chance of a positive outcome.”

“Pouring more money into Ukraine’s coffers will only prolong the conflict and lead to more loss of life,” Mr. Tuberville said. “No one at the White House, Pentagon or State Department can articulate what victory looks like in this fight. They couldn’t when we sent the first tranche of aid over two years ago. We should be working with Ukraine and Russia to negotiate an end to this madness.”

Three liberals, Democratic Senators Jeff Merkley of Oregon and Peter Welch of Vermont, as well as Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, also opposed the measure. They said they could not endorse sending more offensive weapons to Israel when the government’s campaign in Gaza has killed tens of thousands of people and created a hunger crisis there.

“We are now in the absurd situation where Israel is using U.S. military assistance to block the delivery of U.S. humanitarian aid to Palestinians,” Mr. Sanders said. “If that is not crazy, I don’t know what is. But it is also a clear violation of U.S. law. Given that reality, we should not today even be having this debate. It is illegal to continue current military aid to Israel, let alone send another $9 billion with no strings attached.”

But the vast majority of senators in both parties supported the legislation, and Senate leaders regarded its passage as a triumph, particularly given the opposition to aid for Ukraine that had built up in the House.

For months, Mr. Johnson and right-wing Republicans in the House had refused to entertain aid to Ukraine unless Mr. Biden agreed to stringent measures to curtail immigration on the U.S. border with Mexico. When Senate Democrats agreed this year to legislation that paired the aid with stiffer border enforcement provisions , Mr. Trump denounced it and Republicans rejected it out of hand.

Then the Senate passed its own $95 billion emergency aid legislation for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan without any immigration measures, ramping up political pressure on the House to do the same. For weeks, the message to Mr. Johnson from Mr. Schumer and Mr. McConnell had been the same: Pass the Senate bill.

In extensive remarks on the Senate floor on Tuesday before the procedural vote, Mr. McConnell cast congressional approval of the aid package as “a test of American resolve, our readiness and our willingness to lead.” He rebuked the naysayers in his party, criticizing those who, he said, would “indulge the fantasy of pulling up a drawbridge.”

“Make no mistake: Delay in providing Ukraine the weapons to defend itself has strained the prospects of defeating Russian aggression,” Mr. McConnell said. “Dithering and hesitation have compounded the challenges we face. Today’s action is overdue, but our work does not end here. Trust in American resolve is not rebuilt overnight. Expanding and restocking the arsenal of democracy doesn’t just happen by magic.”

Ukrainian officials cheered the impending passage of the bill.

Ruslan Stefanchuk, the speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament, posted a photograph on social media of lawmakers holding American flags inside the chamber in Kyiv, in “gratitude to the United States and to every member of the House of Representatives who supported the Ukraine Aid Bill. We look forward to a similar decision from the Senate.”

“The United States has been and remains a strategic partner that stands shoulder to shoulder with the Ukrainian people in our fight against the russian aggressor!” Mr. Stefanchuk added.

The photograph recalled the scene on the floor of the House on Saturday when Democrats waved miniature Ukrainian flags as they voted for the aid bill. They were rebuked by Mr. Johnson and other Republicans, who called it a violation of decorum and said that only American flags should be displayed in the chamber.

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

News and Analysis

The authorities in Poland and Germany have arrested at least five of their citizens  and accused them of spying for Russia or of offering to help Moscow commit violence on European soil, including a “possible attack” on the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

The drone combat in Ukraine that is transforming modern warfare has begun taking a deadly toll on one of the most powerful symbols  of American military might — the tank — and threatening to rewrite how it will be used in future conflicts.

At least 17 people were killed and scores more injured when three Russian missiles struck a busy downtown district of Chernihiv , north of Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said.

World Military Spending: The world spent more on military costs and weapons in 2023  than it had in 35 years, driven in part by the war in Ukraine and the threat of an expanded Russian invasion, according to an independent analysis.

New American Technology: Project Maven was meant to revolutionize modern warfare. But the conflict in Ukraine has underscored  how difficult it is to get 21st-century data into 19th-century trenches.

Resuming U.S. Military Aid: Much-needed munitions like artillery shells could start arriving relatively quickly , but experts say it could take weeks before U.S. assistance has a direct impact on the war . What would $60 billion buy ?

Journey has long been one of the bestselling bands in the U.S. For decades, the rock group has outpaced so many of their competitors in the industry in one specific manner, as Americans never seem to tire of their music.

This week, Journey’s Greatest Hits , the singles-packed compilation from the band, hits 800 weeks on the Billboard 200. It ranks as the third-longest-charting title on the ranking of the most-consumed albums in the U.S., and Journey is in incredible company by reaching this milestone.

Journey is just the third musical act to see one project live on the Billboard 200 for at least 800 weeks. They join a club that includes both Pink Floyd and Bob Marley, two of the most beloved names in music history.

For many years now, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon has ranked as the album with the most weeks spent on the Billboard 200. The rockers are in a very distant first place, and the public isn’t done with that title just yet.

This time around, Dark Side of the Moon is back on the Billboard 200 after falling away some time ago. As of this frame, the project has lived on the roster for 989 weeks, and that number increases with some regularity.

In second place on this list of the longest-charting titles in the history of the Billboard 200 is Legend by Bob Marley and the Wailers. That compilation has earned 830 stays on the tally, including this week.

This time around, Journey’s Greatest Hits falls down the chart, though it’s not in danger of disappearing from the tally. The compilation slips from No. 71 to No. 90, tumbling nearly 20 spaces. It shifted 12,376 equivalent units in the past tracking period, which is down a little more than 3% from the period before, according to Luminate.

It will be some time before another album reaches 800 weeks on the Billboard 200, but it certainly will happen again. Metallica’s self-titled project has now spent 746 frames on the list. Behind that title comes Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits , which has yet to reach 700 stays.

Journey is an American rock band formed in 1973 in San Francisco by former members of Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch. The band has gone through several phases; its strongest commercial success occurred between 1978 and 1987, after which it temporarily disbanded. During that period, the band released a series of hit songs, including 1981's "Don't Stop Believin'", which became in 2009 the top-selling catalog track in iTunes history. Its parent studio album, Escape, the band's eighth and most successful, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and yielded another of their most popular singles, "Open Arms". Its 1983 follow-up, Frontiers, was almost as successful in the United States, reaching No. 2 and spawning several successful singles; it broadened the band's ap… more »

Ten years, eight clubs, one dream: The story of Fa'amanu Brown, rugby league's ultimate journeyman

Analysis Sport Ten years, eight clubs, one dream: The story of Fa'amanu Brown, rugby league's ultimate journeyman

A collage of one player wearing eight different rugby leagye jerseys

Fa'amanu Brown has had plenty of days to remember though his 10-year, eight-club career in rugby league, but the past week was something new, even for him.

After securing a release from Hull FC, he flew from England on Sunday, landed in Australia on Monday, signed with St George Illawarra on Tuesday, trained with them on Thursday and played in the club's 30-12 win over the Warriors on Friday.

"I didn't think I'd play on Friday but Flanno (coach Shane Flanagan) said he'd throw me in the deep end," Brown said.

"It was surreal to get a win against a quality side like the Warriors and it was the first time we won back-to-back in a couple of years, so that's important.

"Nobody is ever going to turn down an offer to play in the NRL, even if you're straight off the plane."

Brown's move is the latest chapter of a long, winding journey that started in Christchurch and has taken the 29-year-old from Cronulla, to Canterbury, to Featherstone Rovers in the English second division, to North Sydney Bears in NSW Cup, to Wests Tigers, back to Canterbury, then to Newcastle, Hull FC and finally the Dragons.

That's nine different stints at eight different clubs across two continents and four different leagues in 11 seasons, for those of you playing at home. The Dragons are the fourth team he's played for in 18 months.

Throw in his appearances for Samoa, his belated debut for New Zealand – where he played in last year's record Pacific Championship final belting of Australia – and the fact he overcame a leg injury that left doctors telling him he'd never walk again let alone play, and it's one of the most remarkable careers in modern rugby league.

Some players might take being described as a journeyman as disparaging. Brown uses it as a sign-off on Instagram and wears it as a badge of honour. Few can match his journey, on the field or off it.

Plenty of people who have faced Brown's hardships would have retired long ago. The uncertainty of life as a rugby league vagabond isn't for everyone but Brown has been making the very most of what he's got his whole life.

A group of rugby league players celebrate a try

"It's from my upbringing. We all face adversity on our own journeys but I grew up in a three-bedroom state house as one of nine kids. We just had to deal with what we had," Brown said.

"It's the hardships I've had to go through. I grew up in a home with domestic violence. I grew up in a house where you had to deal with what you had and I've carried that with me.

"When you're chucked in the deep end it's swim or drown and I've been put in that position my whole life.

"That's what built my resilience and my character. I'm so lucky with my family and my support base, my fiance Jordan has been with me through everything. She's been right there on the rollercoaster with me.

"There have been plenty of times when I've wanted to retire but I'm so lucky."

Brown got his first shot at the top grade back in 2014 with Cronulla as the club struggled in the grip of the ASADA scandal.

The Sharks were outscored 56-0 in his first two matches. But, as he's done so many times, Brown kept at it and Cronulla, somehow, won their following two games – overturning 22-0 and 24-0 deficits in the process.

He stayed at the Sharks until the end of 2017 – that's where he worked with Flanagan, who was instrumental in bringing him to the Dragons this season — before he headed to Canterbury and began his wandering.

"It sounds like a cliché, but I love giving back. For me, the only way out of the hood was rugby league. That was all I knew. So I have to represent people who do it tough," Brown said.

"There's a lot of kids, some kids who come from nothing, who might be unlucky with injuries or they're down and out and think there's no way back, that's who I represent. If I can do it then, bloody hell, anyone can.

"I never left a stone unturned. You can have all the achievements in the world, but you know in your heart if you gave it your all, if you never stopped fighting."

That attitude helped Brown the most during the toughest stretch of his career in 2020 when a succession of foot injuries put his career on the brink.

Five doctors told him he'd never play again. Some of them said he'd never run again. At the same time, he was nursing his mother through the final stages of her life as she battled lung cancer.

Amid everything, he found a way to keep going. He always does. He's realised he's more than his football career, a perspective that gives him the strength to carry on in the hardest times.

"Rugby league is a part of me, but it's not all of me. I still have so much away from the game and I'm still young in the real world. I had to learn that rugby league is so important to me but it isn't me," Brown said.

"So when you go through injuries, or when you're on a string of one-year deals or you lose yourself trying to train too hard or think about it too much, you have to remember that, and you only learn it through experiences."

Brown is still hopeful of having some experiences left. He'll play for the Dragons on Anzac Day against the Roosters in front of a sold out crowd at the Sydney Football Stadium, which is one of rugby league's great occasions, and with Flanagan's coaching beginning to take effect on the Red V, who knows where this season could end up?

A man passes the ball during a rugby league match

"When you look at the Dragons you can see that when they face adversity they play for one another, they turn up. That's something they haven't had in recent years and that's what I think Flanno has bought, that winning mentality," Brown said.

"He knows what he's doing and a lot of the boys are trusting him and what he's trying to do."

For the time being, Brown's goals are modest. He wants to earn more minutes as he re-acclimatises to the NRL. He wants to lock down a contract for next year, to get just a little bit of security.

He's taking his career year-by-year at this point, but the end isn't in sight yet. The man is still on his journey.

"Not many people get to do this, not many people get to be in our shoes, so I was always going to take it with both hands," Brown said.

"It doesn't matter if it's one minute or 80 minutes, you get to be out there in front of 20,000 fans.

"A normal person doesn't get to experience that, so I'm so grateful for everything, I'm so grateful to be at the elite level and I believe this is where I belong.

"I'm a full believer that everything happens for a reason. With my journey you can't really write a story like this."

Great app but one small but essential thing

I just got this app and I already enjoy it! Though when it says I get free 20 generations, I was hoping I would get a few free generations a day (like 3-5 or something). I was a little bummed out when i see that it’s not the case. So as a suggestion, i would like there be a few free generations a day kind of feature. I’m sure folks would love that. Other than that, I really enjoy this app.

Does Not Work with High Load of Generations

The Niji journey app make my phone hotter than when I’m playing a graphic intensive game like genshin or tower of fantasy. When I begin to do more than 4 generations I only do 3 at a time, my phone gets hot the app basically stops responding. It makes it impossible to look up a previous photo to make generation of it. When you got to your profile it takes 3+ mins to load your list and then once you are there it won’t let you select any of them. The app has more functionality than discord and more options but it’s almost unusable after 10 mins or one visit to your profile page. Please fix this for those who generate high numbers of photos.

Developer Response ,

Hi, Thank you for your feedback. We have been made aware of this issue, and have released some updates to address this. We are also constantly working towards making the app better, and if you are able to help give us more specific information. We can take a closer, and better look.

Pretty good

Mainly, there are no issues that have really messed with the app or the experience. The app runs smoothly, you can see the image progress, you can choose prompts, and add reference photos which is all amazing. HOWEVER, a big issue I run into is when a ‘Job failed to run’ while using a free trial. It takes one of your free generations without even showing a result. Or if you cancel a generation, you don't get your little trial generation back. The app is good, I’m just not sure if these are bugs or something :)

Embracing vulnerability: a doctor’s journey of healing and connection

One doctor I’ve worked with had gotten caught up in the idea of being a doctor. She realized, during her training with us, that she had stopped looking her patients in the eye. In fact, she had stopped making eye contact with her patients when she was in residency. She had to tell these two parents that their baby had died in the womb, and she did not know how to do that. This doctor was a deeply caring person, a deeply loving person, but she got so uncomfortable, and then she came to cling to this story of discomfort. It was through learning how to be with her fear and discomfort, staying in a relationship with those things, and asking for help that transformation came. This is what practicing medicine contemplatively can look like.

Slowly this doctor learned that she could actually be with all of her feelings, which gave her the capacity to truly be more present with her patients, no matter what she needed to say to them. She could create spaces, which we co-created together, and she was actually able to begin looking at her patients again. Really see them! And she began loving them again, and feeling sorrow with them, and feeling the mystery of it again. This process took time and support. It was amazing to see her start showing up to work with this super energized feeling. I was amazed because when she came the first day, I was thinking, well, she’s in trouble. Her shoulders were hunched up, and her head was kind of down. She almost collapsed into herself. Over the months of our work together in contemplative medicine, she started to engage, her shoulders went down, and her head went up. It was like a weighted blanket had come off her, and she remembered who she was. “I’ve been almost like Rip Van Winkle,” she said. “I have been asleep for a long time.”

Difficult emotions can come up in our workplaces: fear, hopelessness, anger, greed, pride. There is a danger in accepting that as simply part of our work life and cutting it off from our full humanity. While we might not allow ourselves to be cut off at home or at work, we just shut down and accept it. What we learn through contemplative practice is that feeling alone is not the same thing as actually being alone. If we find ourselves feeling isolated and separate, we can reach out to others who are struggling with the same thing.

Our work can become a mirror, and when it does, it reflects our practice back to us. Every moment of our lives matters and deserves our undivided attention. There really isn’t any dead time in our lives, you know—heaven forbid. No moment with any one patient will repeat itself, and everyone’s path is different. If we continuously keep this in mind, each encounter can be the practice of waking up to our lives.

The journey of practicing contemplative medicine underscores the importance of learning to have a new relationship with our discomfort and vulnerability. By facing our fears directly and seeking support, we become capable of rediscovering our capacity for compassion and connection within ourselves and with our patients equally, ultimately revitalizing our energy and sense of purpose. Challenging emotions are an inherent part of our work and life, and yet they need not define us. We can feel our fear, or any emotion, without becoming it. By acknowledging and embracing our humanity, both within and beyond the confines of our profession, we can cultivate resilience, compassion, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and others. Let us heed the call to remain present in every moment, connecting deeply and recognizing each encounter as an opportunity for growth and awakening in our lives and practice.
