Orchha is situated alongside the Malwa plateau in the state of Madhya Pradesh’s northern region, in the central region of India. Orchha is traversed by the Betwa River.

Orchha has a variety of palaces and forts to go on a sightseeing tour. Within the Orchha Fort complex, there are a variety of palaces and forts to explore. Formerly a palace, Raja Ram Temple is a popular tourist destination. The second palace in this fort complex is called Raj Mahal, and it is renowned for the religious-themed murals that adorn its walls. The poetess-musician from the 17th century is honoured at the Rai Parveen Mahal. The original location of the Lord Ram idol was Chaturbhuj Temple in Orchha. The architecture of the Laxminarayan Temple is a distinctive fusion of fort and temple. Jhansi, a historic city, is well-known for its involvement in battling the British during the 1857 uprising.

Orchha Fort

The Orchha Fort complex comprises several formidable structures including forts, palaces, temples, cenotaphs and historic monuments. The majestic fort speaks volumes of the glorious Bundela Rajputs and their stories of valor. Situated on the banks of the River Betwa, the fort offers impressive artwork of paintings and stone carving within its premises, catering to the desire of history and nature lovers.

The fort complex houses the prominent Raja Mahal, which is the definition of intricate architecture. A part of it converted into Ram Raja Temple is the only place in the country where Lord Rama is worshipped as King Rama.

Other popular structures in the fort premises include Jahangir Mahal, built by Bir Singh Deo in 1605 and Rai Parveen Mahal, which was built by Raja Indrajit exclusively for dancer-poetess Rai Praveen. Ram Raja Temple

The Ram Raja Temple, also known as Orchha Temple, holds religious importance as it is the only temple in India where Lord Rama is worshipped as King Rama. Built in the 16th century, the temple is a popular monument in the Orchha Fort complex amongst the followers of Hinduism.

It is believed that the structure used to be a citadel in the kingdom of Madhukar Shah, who changed it to Rama Temple when Lord Rama appeared in his dream and asked him to install his statue in the place.

The auspicious occasion of Ram Navami makes thousands of devotees visit this temple to offer their prayers to Lord Rama. Interestingly, not just is he worshipped as a king here, gun salutes are also offered as a mark of devotion and respect.

Chaturbhuj Temple

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the Chaturbhuj Temple in Orchha is an ancient architectural masterpiece built by King Madhukar during 1558-1573. The temple stands tall on a raised rectangular platform with basic architecture. It is divided into three main parts, and the central position of the temple is four-storey high. 

A large part of the temple remains unfurnished, which is a striking fact that makes it one of the interesting Orchha tourist places. It is believed that the temple was initially dedicated to Lord Ram. However, the Lord Rama idol in Rani Niwas refused to move to the temple, where the idol of Lord Vishnu with four arms established itself and gave the temple its identity. Sunder Mahal

Built by Prince Dhurbhajan, the son of Raja Jhujhar Singh, Sunder Mahal has lately become a popular pilgrim place for Muslims. The palace is a symbol of love as the prince fell in love with a Muslim girl and embraced Islam as his religion, giving up all his princely privileges. The transformation saw the prince resort to meditation and renunciation and retired to this very place after getting married.

Why Orchha is an underrated addition to any India itinerary

Orchha might just be the greatest Indian town you’ve never heard of.

I can distinctly remember carefully looking over my Delhi to Kathmandu itinerary before departure, and having no discernable idea of where Orchha was, or why it might be worth including on an India itinerary.

Of course, I knew Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Kathmandu, and other hotspots, but my mind just drew a blank when it came to Orchha. It’s a wonderful thing, too, because when you have no preconceptions about a place, you’re leaving the door wide open to be wowed.

Orchha, as it turns out, is a very different side of India, and one that I’m very happy I became acquainted with. In many ways, Orchha was the unsung hero of the trip, as it offered an intimate look into a different pace of life with a history that was both fascinating and captivating.

Why come to Orchha?

Founded at the turn of the 16th century by Rudra Pratep Singh, Orchha quickly became of some importance because of the impressive and opulent fort that was built there during Singh’s reign, as well as his own showing of independence and military might. He was a chief of Bundela Rajput descent who reigned over the city from 1501 to 1531, during which time he accomplished an awful lot.

What’s remarkable about Orchha is that, compared to other Indian towns and cities, it remains very much unchanged from its original formation. The town has a distinct medieval aura that woos you with its charm. Sure, modern daily life swirls around the town, but the building blocks of the town are clearly and delightfully historical.

What should I see and do in Orchha?

Orchha, due to its size, is a really manageable city from a tourist perspective. During our visit, Intrepid set up guided tours of major sights, but we also had a fair bit of time to explore on our own, which I actually really appreciated. This setup ensured that I covered my bases from a historical perspective, but that I also had some room to make this part of the trip “my own,” and discover on my own terms.

Part of making “my own” trip ironically consisted of discovering with others in my group. John and I actually ended up bonding over our experience at Orchha’s funerary temples (known as Chhatris), which wasn’t on the itinerary, but meant a lot to both of us. We also ended up seeing some other members of our group there as well, and taking a few fun photos together, which only added to the experience.

Orchha Fort Complex

In Orchha, you simply won’t be able to miss the Orchha Fort Complex, even if you wanted to. This sight dominates the skyline and the feeling of the town. The complex consists of the fort itself, but more broadly refers to the palaces and temples in the same area of the fort itself, as well as the gardens and pavilions.

The main palaces which are worth seeing are Raja Mahal (Raja Mandir), Jehangir Mahal, and Sheesh Mahal. Jehangir Mahal in particular is spectacular, and will likely resemble nothing you’ve seen previously in your life. If you’re a fan of Indo-Islamic architecture, then you’ve hit the proverbial jackpot. It was built in the 17th century by the ruler Vir Singh Deo, who built it as a warm welcome for the visit of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir.

Apparently the welcome wasn’t warm enough, as the two engaged in a bloody war shortly thereafter with Jahangir’s troops coming out on top. However, it wasn’t long before Vir Singh Deo again was back on top, and he remained a proud fugitive the rest of his life.

Chaturbhuj Temple

Like the Orchha Fort Complex, you couldn’t avoid the Chaturbhuj Temple even if you wanted to. The spherical spires stretch nearly 350 feet into the air and are impressive and imposing to say the least. The temple was started by Madhukar Shah, but completed by his son, Vir Singh Deo in the 17th century. The temple is dedicated to the god Vishnu, which is exemplified by the name “chaturbhuj,” which in sanskrit literally translates to “one who has four arms.”

Looking at dates, it’s clear the Bundela Rajputs went on an unprecedented building spree in the early 17th century and constructed an impressive collection of buildings and temples, most of which are still standing today.

These cenotaphs are living monuments which pay respect to Orchha’s past royalty, including the likes of Vir Singh Deo, which is separated away from the rest of the cenotaphs near the water. As I mentioned before, during our afternoon off, myself and another participant, John, moseyed on down and were in awe when we got there. Chhatris, right on the banks of the Betwa River, is just a 10 or so minute walk from the center of the town, and I’d strongly recommend a visit.

A cooking class to remember

The cooking class which you can take part in with Intrepid might just have been the highlight of my time in India, if only because we were warmly welcomed into someone’s home in Orchha for the experience. We learned about the local cuisine in an intimate cooking demonstration in a local family’s home. The kids were working on their homework with dad, and mom graciously made a meal from scratch, then we were able to indulge, and it was scrumptious.

Understanding what went into the meal (which was, as it turns out, equal parts spice and love) altered my experience and appreciation for Indian cuisine. While I do love solo travel, I really don’t see how I would have had this experience without Intrepid’s support for and connection to the local community.

Furthermore, our local leader, Chime, played a big part in elaborating upon and contextualizing the importance of cooking in Indian culture and, once again, served as an important bridge for our knowledge of India.

More than big cities like Delhi and Kathmandu , I yearn to be back in Orchha. In many ways, Orchha is like one big outdoor museum, where you’re immersed in the town’s history and stories. That’s what I keep coming back to with Orchha, the sense that you can get the story and see the town without much effort because almost all of the town is worth seeing.

However, I also know the value of going to a place like Orchha and putting in that effort to understand and appreciate what makes the town unique. They’ve got a proud heritage that you’d be remiss not to dive into while you’re a guest in the town. It’s a history that I didn’t know that I’m now personally attached to, and I’m grateful for that. Places like Orchha – smaller places that can sometimes get lost in the tourist fray – provide value because you don’t have a set of expectations for the town or city to live up to. You get to arrive with an open mind and heart, and simply let yourself get swept away.

7 Best Things To Do in Orchha in 2024

Looking for things to do in Orchha Madhya Pradesh? This small town is absolutely a must-visit on your next India trip and this guide has you sorted with the best places to see in Orccha. 

The town of Orchha is over 500 years old and is conveniently close to the city of Jhansi, from where you can easily catch trains all over India . The town is well known as a religious centre and for its historical monuments. 

Set on the banks of the Betwa River, Orchha is a great place to escape the crowds and see a quieter side of India.

I visited Orchha as part of a 2 week India trip that also included Abhaneri , Khajuraho , Varanasi and the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Jaipur and Agra).

A day trip from Jhansi is an easy way to see Orchha, although I would recommend overnighting in the area so you can see more.

Best Things to Do in Orchha

1. orchha palace.

The Orchha palace, or Orchha Fort, is the number one place to visit in Orchha. Built by the Bundela dynasty, Hindu rulers of the princely state of Orchha from the 16 th  century.

The complex technically includes two major palaces as well as a bunch of smaller (but still impressive) outbuildings. It’s heavily fortified, with the river acting as a moat on one side, and outer walls covered in archer slits and elephant spikes.

The Raja Mahal was the residence of the kings and royal family and is richly decorated inside although simpler outside.

The Jahangir Palace was built for the Mughal emperor Jahangir, who sadly only visited once. It’s a stunning combination of Indo-Islamic architecture with countless arches and intricate carvings.

You can climb to the upper levels of the Jahangir Palace to get great views over the palace courtyard and surrounding area. Although don’t try this if you’re afraid of heights or have mobility issues as there are no barriers on the balconies and the steps are very steep.

We hired a local guide from the fort office to explain the history of the complex and I’d definitely recommend this as you learn a lot and there are very few signs to tell you what you’re looking at.

Current guide fees are displayed at the ticket office and are typically a few hundred rupees dependent on group size.

Entry is only around 12rs although you will have to pay extra to take cameras in (smartphones are fine).

The complex is open 8 am to 5 pm but subject to change on holidays.

2. Orchha Temples

Orchha is well known as a Hindu religious hub and particularly for its devotion to Rama, the god who is worshipped as a king (Ram Raja) in Orchha.

There are two main temples in Orchha, the Ram Raja temple which is newer and used for puja ceremonies throughout the day, and the older Chaturbhuj Temple which does technically have an operating shrine but is not used for mass worship.

These temples were built by a previous king and queen of Orchha for their respective favourite deities, with the Ram Raja temple being a converted palace.

Visitors can attend prayers at the Ram Raja temple which is absolutely a must do as the energy here is incredible, creating a very powerful experience. Just remember to remove your shoes, dress (and behave) conservatively and leave room for worshippers.

You can also climb the stairs up to the Chaturbhuj Temple which features panoramic views over the fort, cenotaphs, and surrounding countryside. There is a small shrine to Vishnu at which visitors can make offerings and ask for blessings.

3. Orchha Chattris

Chattris are tombs similar to Western cenotaphs but these monuments are unlike any grave or memorial you would find elsewhere in the world. These memorialise different kings of the Bundela dynasty, who also built the Orchha fort.

Set in a large garden and surrounded by flowers in vibrant reds, oranges and yellows, this is the most peaceful spot in Orchha to explore and is especially brilliant at sunrise or sunset.

There are four large chhattris and ten smaller ones. Each chattri is a multi-storey building, largely hollow with rows of arches that you can walk between and glimpse the river through. They are topped with domes, some short and rounded and others tall and pointed to mimic the Himalayas. This makes for awesome photos!

4. Saket Museum

This museum, next to the Ram Raja temple, is easy to miss but a must-add to your list of places to visit in Orchha.

The museum is small, but it has some beautiful artworks from all over India representing the stories of Lord Ram in markedly different artistic styles.

The main attraction at the museum is the life-size statues of the gods, brightly coloured and made of fibreglass.

5. Betwa River rafting

As Orchha is built around the river, getting out on the water is a great way to see a different side of the town and a very different experience to your typical sightseeing.

There are a couple of companies offering rafting trips, generally one-way starting from just past the main bridge with jeep transfers back to your starting point. The easiest way to book is to call ahead. 

Expect to pay anything from 200-2500rs per person depending on inclusions (ie hotel transfers, lunch). 

The river is fairly calm but there are some rapids (Grades 1/2) to keep things interesting. And the water is much cleaner than elsewhere in India so if you end up falling in it’s not the end of the world.

6. Rajni Cooking School

Learning to cook some Indian cuisine is a must-do on your trip and there is an opportunity to do this in Orchha with Rajni Cooking Classes.

Rather than a hands-on school with an industrial kitchen, these classes are hosted by a local woman in her family’s home. While you can help out with making dishes, the classes are mostly a demonstration. 

Each class typically starts with masala chai and can include 10+ dishes, depending on group size. And yes, you do get to eat them all at the end!

There is no schedule or online bookings so the best way to organise a class is to make a request via the Facebook page .

Like all Indian towns, Orchha has a main street full of small shops and market stalls. The area around the Ram Raja temple in particular, is full of stalls selling both tourist souvenirs and religious paraphernalia like garlands and ribbons.

The shopping here is good, considering the size of the town and provides a calmer alternative to the larger markets in the big cities. You do still need to bargain hard though!

I found most shops sell similar goods of relatively cheap quality but found some great bargains on clothing.

Orchha Tours

There are very few options available for scheduled guided tours to Orchha, especially for foreign visitors. However, you can easily organise a private driver to take you around, make enquiries at Jhansi station.

How to get to Orchha from Jhansi

Orchha is only 20km from the city of Jhansi which is the closest transport hub. 

The best way to get to Orchha from Jhansi is by hiring a taxi which are easiest to find at the train station.

The drive takes around 30-45 minutes, depending on the time of day and can cost anything from a few hundred rupees to a few thousand depending on your bargaining skills.

There is technically a local train that runs between Jhansi and Orchha however it stops quite a way out from the main attractions and accommodations so it’s not a great option if you have baggage with you.

Orchha Itinerary

If you are doing an Orchha day trip from Jhansi, I’d recommend focusing on the palace and two main temples. 

If you have another day, try getting up early to see the cenotaphs (chattris) at sunrise then head out for a bit of river rafting. Hit the markets for some food and a bit of shopping.

Where to stay in Orchha

Like most of regional India, there are no chain hotels and most accommodation is small family-run ‘hotels’ that are very basic however there are 2-3 higher quality options aimed at foreign tourists. 

Luxury: Amar Mahal Hotel – Mahal means palace and this place truly does look like one, right from the front gates

Mid-range: Orchha Resort –this is a mass-market tourist option but offers all the more comfortable touches like a pool, spa and buffet that are less common elsewhere

Budget: Hotel Ganpati – a friendly family-run spot with river views and basic but clean rooms

A tip for Indian accommodation: you get what you pay for so if something looks like a great deal don’t expect it to be as good as the pictures. Things like wifi, AC and hot water may be advertised but not actually working.

Frequently asked questions on Orchha

While peak tourist season in India is from November to February and has the coolest temperatures, you’ll find the place quieter and get even better deals if you come slightly before or after. I last visited Orccha in October which had good weather (hot and humid but manageable with some cooling drizzle). 

While there are many attractions in Orchha, the town is most famous for its fort/palace, closely followed by the temples of Ram Raja and Vishnu.

This really depends on how much you like to cram into a day and how many of the things to do in Orchha are of interest to you. Most people only do a day trip, but I would say overnighting (2 days) is ideal.

Exhibiting the wonderful Bundela-era legends, Orchha remains steadfast as the major historical site that has maintained the culture and legends of the rulers of the Bundela dynasty. Chieftain Rudra Pratap Singh founded Orchha on a piece of land along the Betwa river. This amazing town will fascinate you during your adventure, as it is a perfect destination to tour with friends and family. There are so many historical places to visit in Orchha and it is well connected to almost all the major towns of Madhya Pradesh.

Places To Visit in Orchha

Rudra Pratap Singh, the Rajput king of Orchha, started the construction of the Raj Mahal during the 16th century. However, the work of completing the structure was eventually taken up by the successors of Rudra Pratap Singh, the most popular of whom was Madhukar Shah.

It is a square structure in which two wings have five floors on three sides and four floors on one side. The bedrooms of four queens are constructed to the right of the Private audience's hall. The Cabin of the emperor is at the front, at the same level as the Sanctum of the Chatturbhuj Mandir. The ceiling of the royal chamber has been delicately painted with vibrant colours. Many other paintings, illustrating scenes from Ramayana and the glory of Bundela Court are hung on the walls of the palace. Beautifully stone-carved grills give the palace a majestic royal look and the angle shaft allows natural air and light continuously flow through the rooms. There are parts of the palace which have been converted into a Heritage Hotel called Sheesh Mahal, open for the tourists to stay while they explore the sites of Orchha. The interior of the palace is decorated with fragments of mirrors and includes lavish royal accommodation. These marvellous architectures stand tall inside the Orchha fort complex and enthrall its visitors.

Laxmi Narayan Temple

The history of the temple goes back to the Bundela dynasty. This temple is a square structure built by King Veer Singh Deo in 1622. The outer walls of the temple have the window like carvings and they are topped with battlements. The courtyard is surrounded by walls with galleries that run throughout them and are open to the sky. A hall is located in front of the octagonal sanctum in the centre of the courtyard. The murals that cover the galleries and vaulted roofs are the most artistic feature of the Laxminarayan Temple. The temple has some beautiful paintings on the upper part of the walls. The subjects of the paintings are particularly unusual than that of other paintings in the temple. While some of them illustrate episodes from the Ramayana, and of Lord, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, others depict mythical, martial and secular scenes. There is an outstanding painting of the 'Chungi Chirya', the giant bird that could fly high with an elephant in its claws.

There are fifteen cenotaphs honouring the Bundela kings and other members of their family on the right bank of the Betwa River in the south. The platform on which the chhatris rise as well as the sanctum are square in shape. The cremated remains of the royal princes and princesses are kept in the sanctums. A marble statue of Madhukar Shah and his wife with a painted canopy can be found in the first chhatri. The last chhatri in the line that can be seen from the riverbank is precisely square in structure which is built to honour Veer Singh Deo.

Chaturbhuj Temple

The design of the temple is unique in terms of architecture when compared to other structures in Orchha. The dome of the temple is not ribbed but smooth like that of a mosque. The court of the temple is open to the sky and it also has rising towers resembling the Chhatris of the Bundelas. There is a statue of four armed, that is Chaturbhuj, Vishnu inside the temple. It stands on a pedestal which gives the statue a majestic appearance.

Jahangir Mahal

Jahangir Mahal was built in the 17th century by the Bundela ruler, Veer Singh Deo. It was constructed to honour the first visit of Emperor Jahangir to Orchha. The entry of the palace is marked with a traditional and aesthetic gate. The east-facing front wall of the palace is covered with turquoise tiles. At the entrance, two stone elephants greet you with a bell that marks the entry of the King of that period.

It is believed that this palace is the epitome of Indo-Islamic architecture. The domes have engravings of external ribs which contrasts with the internal carving of the Islamic style. The brackets of the windows are made in a wavy style, following Jain architecture. It is impressively decorated with light-coloured ceramic tiles. This three-storied building has some amazing sculptures, beautiful balconies, Chhatris and beautifully carved-topped domes that reflect its architectural brilliance.

Shri Ram Raja Temple

The Ram Raja Temple is the only temple in the country where Lord Rama is worshipped as the King rather than a god. It is also known as Orchha Temple. Shri Ram Raja Temple in Orchha is beautifully painted in hues of white, pink, and yellow.

The legend behind the temple is as vivid as its walls.Madhukar Shah Ju Dev, the ruler of Orchha, was a follower of Lord Krishna, while his wife, Queen Ganesh Kunwari, was a follower of Lord Rama. The Queen once refused the King's request to accompany him to Braj-Mathura because she preferred to go to Ayodhya. The King insisted and invited her to follow him. However, the Queen declined. The monarch was annoyed over this and instructed her to return only when she would be bringing Lord Rama along. When the Queen arrived in Ayodhya, she began to pray to Lord Rama, but the lord did not show up. She finally jumped into the Saryu River at midnight out of desperation. In response to the Queen's prayers and devotion, Lord Rama manifested himself as a child in her lap.Three conditions were set forth by Lord Rama before he decided to leave, "I will travel exclusively in Pushya Nakshatra so that he reaches Orchha with sages; second, Once we reach Orchha, I shall be the King of Orchha; and third, the first place you seat me will be my final place to stay," lord instructed.

When the King came to know that the queen was travelling back to Orchha with Lord Rama, he began work on the temple. The queen, who had just returned from a long journey, chose to go to her room for the night while sitting with Lord Rama in her palace. But in line with Lord Rama's requirements, he assumed the first position and sat down. Thus, the name Ram Raja Temple has remained attached to the queen's palace to this day. When the King learned that the queen was travelling back to Orchha with Lord Rama, he began work on the temple. The queen, who had just returned from a long journey, chose to go to her room for the night while sitting with Lord Rama in her palace. But according to Lord Rama's conditions, he took the first place where he was seated. Thus, from that day to today, the queen's palace is known as Ram Raja Temple.

Orchha Bird Sanctuary

This sanctuary is full of scenic beauty and picturesque landscapes. Spread over an area of 46 sq. km, the Bird Sanctuary has its significance due to its rich fauna, Betwa River and availability of some rare species of plants.

By Train: Jhansi is the nearest railway junction from the Orchha at 17 km. Cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Indore and Ahmedabad is well connected to Jhansi by rail routes

By Road: The nearest bus stand is at Jhansi. Orchha is situated between Jhansi and Khajuraho and is linked via good National and State Highways. There are regular bus and taxi services from Jhansi to Orchha.

Orchha – Where Ancient Monuments Whisper

Many of Orchha’s temples and palaces are still in pristine condition, notwithstanding their age; most of them were constructed during the 1700s and 1800s. Rudra Pratap, ruler of the Bundela Rajput, as well as successive emperors all contributed to the splendor of Orchha. However, it was Rudra Pratap who picked this site on the banks of the River Betwa to become his capital.

Orchha in Madhya Pradesh was established in 1531 by Rudra Pratap, king of the Bundela and lies only ten miles from Jhansi in the state Uttar Pradesh. The dwellers of magical Orchha city have an interesting explanation for the name of nearby Jhansi; it is derived from ‘jhain-si’ meaning ‘shadow-like’, the words which a former king used to describe it. Today Orchha lies amongst shrubs and low bush, but three centuries ago a thick jungle surrounded it, making it almost impenetrable against Mughal invasions. This made up for the fact that it was not typically situated on a hilltop but rather in a depression in the bend of the river.

Orchha attracts many visitors who marvel at its splendid buildings. The finest amongst these was built by Bir Singh Deo. Many other sites of historical interest can be visited in the area, for example, Gwalior, 74 miles away, and Shivpuri, Khajuraho, and Chanderi. The 45-minute ride by road from Jhansi is worth the while; it wanders through lively villages and through huge green fields.

Entry into the town is through the old royal arched gate, and a little further on, to the left the multi-arched bridge takes the visitor to a quadrangular courtyard, surrounded by enormous palaces built for the Orchha kings. These include the Raja Mandir , Sheesh Mahal , and Jahangir Palace . The fort complex consists of numerous buildings; the Chaturbhuj and pearly Ram Raja Temples , the palaces of Jhujjar Singh and Dinman Hardol , and Sawan Bhadon , Lakshminarayan and Palki Mahal Temples. Phool Bagh is an elegant planned garden with water fountains. A structure underneath the garden served as a retreat for the royals during the heat of summer. The garden leads to a pavilion with eight pillars. On the riverbank are the imposing chhatris, cenotaphs to various rulers.

The town is an interesting mixture of peaceful rural existence with goats and cows roaming around, and the hustle and bustle of tourists hurrying from one magnificent palace to the next. Local residents go on with their tranquil everyday lives in the shadows of history remarkably preserved in these magnificent buildings, all within a one-mile radius. All while the Betwa flows gently past, bearing witness through the years.

Orchha – An Impenetrable Bastion

There are at least two explanations for the origin of the town’s name. Some say that the name itself means ‘hidden’, true to the nature of this land which seems to be veiled in mystery. According to others, a Rajput commander cried out ‘onche’ when he first laid eyes on the land. This means ‘it is low lying or far enough’. In volume twelve of the Imperial Gazette, it tells just how impregnable Orchha once was; even the Mughals with their military powers were deterred by the dense forest, Betwa River, and rugged mountains.

Keshavdas Mishra , Sanskrit scholar and great litterateur of the Orchha court wrote that Orchha was surrounded by the Tumgaranya forest for thirty kos. It was dense like Lord Shiva’s knotted hair. Beyond the forest is an impenetrable jungle, from Tumbavana to Madhuvan and Chanderi across River Madhumati to present-day Datia.

Orchha’s Mythical Betwa River

In olden times the Betwa was called Vetravati. It originates in the village of Vaiton, near Bhopal in the Raisen district and this explains its name, according to some. From Vaiton it continues through the state of Madhya Pradesh, flows past sleepy Orchha town to converge with the Yamuna River in Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh. In a doha or rhyming couplet, Keshavdas compared the river to the mythical Sarayu. In it he says that the seven arms of the river join together at Orchha similar to the 9 palaces belonging to Bir Singh Deo’s sons join around Ram Raja, sitting in their flower gardens.

Orchha’s Ancient History

Raja Rudra Pratap recognized the strategic benefits of establishing his new kingdom at Orchha. For many years, between 1531 and 1783 it was the capital city of the whole of Bundelkhand which included Jhansi, Khajuraho, Datia, Sagar, Lalitpur, Orai, Damoh, Banda, Mahoba, Chhatarpur and Narsinghpur. The cultural influence of Orchha stretched as far as Jabalpur, Gwalior, and Bhopal. Hiuen Tsiang, a seventh-century pilgrim describes Bundelkhand in vivid details and calls it Jejakabhukti, the name it was known as from the 10th to the 16th centuries, during the time of the Chandela Dynasty which lasted between the 10th and 16th centuries.

There are different explanations for the origin of the Bundela’s name. One legend has it that, after his brothers expelled him from his empire, Hemkaran, Gaharwar ruler of Benaras decided to pray to the goddess Vindhyavasini. His sacrifice to her was 5 human heads. This pleased the deity and she bestowed the title Pancham Vindhyela on him, where pancham means ‘the fifth’ and vindhyela ‘knowledge’. It is believed that the name Bundela is a distortion of Vindhyela.

The second explanation also involves Hemkaran. According to this version he tried to offer himself as a sacrifice and slashed his own throat with his sword. Bundela refers to his blood or bund that flowed down his throat.

The Bundelas were the fiercest Rajput warrior race of the time and like the others placed great value on virtues like loyalty, weaponry, like astra (weapons) and the sacred texts or shastra.

The Rulers Who Determined Orchha’s Destiny

• Rudra Pratap Singh , founder and first king of Orchha ruled from 1501 to 1531 and built the fort.

• Bharti Chand , son of Rudra Pratap ruled from 1531 to 1554 but died without leaving a son and heir.

• Madhukar Shah , younger brother of Bharti Chand, succeeded him. During his and his elder brother’s rule the kingdom suffered many attacks from the Afghan Islam Shah Suri and the Mughal Akbar. He reigned from 1554 until 1592.

• Ram Shah ruled from 1592 to 1604.

• Due to internal strife between the different clans, Madhukar was forced to declare Orchha a tributary state of the Mughal Empire. The emperor Jahangir appointed Bir Singh Deo, his vassal as the ruler of Orchha from 1604 to 1627.

• Jhujjar Singh rebelled against the occupation of Orchha by Shah Jahan and was eventually installed on the throne to reign from 1627 until 1635.

• Indramani Singh was the 10th Raja of Orchha and was a ruler from 1672 until 1675.

The Legacy of Bir Singh Deo

It was Bir Singh Deo who was responsible for putting Orchha on the map. Under his rule, the region entered its golden period and reached heights of architectural splendor previously unknown. He initiated the erection of many grand buildings like colossal palaces and magnificent temples, amongst them the beautiful Phool Bagh gardens, Jahangir Palace and Lakshmi Temple.

He was also responsible for the turnaround of the decline of the town of Jhansi during the Chandela dynasty’s downward spiral in the 1700s. He built the fort and re-established the town to its former prominence in the northern part of India. Relations with Mughal emperors improved; in fact, Bir Singh Deo and the emperor Jahangir became close allies. Unfortunately, his incompetent successors Jhujjar and Indramani Sigh, with their frivolous and arrogant behavior caused Orchha’s decline.

Orchha – Noble State of Old

In 1783 the Maratha’s surging power threatened Orchha and therefore Raja Vikramajit moved the capital to Tehri, present-day Tikamgarh. This protected Orchha and it was almost the only town, except for Datia which did not yield to the Maratha.

In 1802 the British took control of the central Indian states after the Bassein treaty between them and Peshwar Bajirao l of the Maratha. In 1854 the British created the Central India Agency and started to interfere in the internal matters in Orchha. The jostling for the throne continued until the British Secretary of State for India installed Bir Singh Deo ll as ruler in 1930. After independence in 1857, Orchha became part of the Indian Union.

How to Reach Orchha

Flights are available to Khajuraho Airport, (105 miles) and Gwalior (74 miles) away. There are regular bus services from Jhansi to Orchha. Orchha is also connected to Jhansi by rail, the nearest train station (10 miles). Trains from Agra and New Delhi stop at Jhansi. Time tables are available on www.irctc.co.in

Orchha Travel Guide 2022 | A Hidden Gem in Central India

Orchha – Good morning, dear readers! Orchha in India can woo you with its unadulterated beauty, palaces, and magnificent temples. I hit the road to Orchha at the break of dawn with a 411cc motorbike and two pieces of luggage.

As the title says, Orchha is undoubtedly a hidden gem on the banks of Betwa River in Madhya Pradesh. To help you make the most of your Orchha trip, I will share my travel story filled with all the relevant information and facts.

The journey started from the City of Lakes ‘Bhopal’ to the hidden riverside town ‘Orchha’ surely needs a heavy & healthy breakfast, the most important meal of the day. You know, it is something which keeps your metabolism in order.

A Heavy Breakfast in Bhopal

Looking for breakfast options in Bhopal? Let me help you! Go to any outlet of ‘Indian Coffee House’ for a healthy South Indian breakfast or Biryani. They serve North Indian dishes too.

Another option is ‘Chai 34’ where you can choose any of the more than 20 flavours of tea or you can directly go ‘Raju Tea Stall’ to have Poha, Jalebi, Kachori and obviously, tea as its name says.

One more good option is ‘Sagar Gaire’ which is popular in Bhopal for delicious soups and the best sandwiches. Hope your tummy feels better now! Let’s move.

Bhopal to Orchha is around 350 km and took 8 to 9 hours including short breaks. Via NH 44 will be the fastest route for you if you are coming from Bhopal or Sagar in Madhya Pradesh.

I request you to kindly check the routes before starting your ride. My sincere thanks to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for the smooth roads!

After riding almost 330 kilometers, I took help from Google Maps to reach the place to stay that I booked in advance through Airbnb which cost me exactly Rs.1732 for two nights. I was greeted warmly and served some tea & snacks. That’s really warm!

How to Reach Orchha

Orchha is in the Niwari district of Madhya Pradesh. It is around 17 km from Jhansi which is the nearest railway station to Orchha and a historic city in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Orchha is well-connected by road to all the major cities like Bhopal, Gwalior and Khajuraho.

The nearest airport to Orchha is Gwalior Airport (130 km), also known as Rajmata Vijaya Raje Scindia Air Terminal.

Things to Do in Orchha

First of all, I would like to say clearly that there is much more in Orchha than just monuments. Unlike other towns, the whole Orchha looks like a palace.

A town where you enjoy wandering around the palace areas, walking in the streets, capturing the magnificent views from any point, and getting lost in the temples & the surrounding market. Let me tell you one by one!

The Towering Chaturbhuj Temple

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Chaturbhuj (one, who has four arms, refers to Rama, an Avatar of Vishnu) Temple is no doubt fascinating and the major tourist attraction in Orchha.

Located outside the limits of the Orchha Fort complex, the temple looks mesmerizing from a distance and you can capture incredible Orchha views from its roof.

Chaturbhuj Temple

It is said that the Queen of Orchha, Rani Ganesh Kunwari had a dream visitation about building a temple for Lord Rama, so she insisted her husband Raja Madhukar Shah, who was the Ruler of Orchha in the 16 th century, to build a temple to house Lord Rama but never used for the purpose it was made for.

Rani Ganesh Kunwari was the dedicated devotee of Lord Rama. She wants the temple in such a manner that she could see Lord Rama from her palace’s window.

After receiving approval from Madhukar Shah, she went Ayodhya to invite Lord Rama and requested him to move to Orchha, but he set forth a condition that he would not move again once he would be initially housed in Orchha.

When she returned with the idol of Rama, it was installed temporarily in Rani Mahal as the Chaturbhuj Temple that was still under construction. Once it is completed, the deity stayed put and refused to move.

As a result, the Chaturbhuj Temple remained vacant, and the palace became the house of Lord Rama. Eventually, the palace was turned into Ram Raja Temple, the only shrine in the country where Lord Rama is worshipped as a King (Raja).

As mentioned earlier, it was a royal palace once and now it is known as Ram Raja Temple where Lord Rama is worshipped as a king. You will be surprised to know that A Guard of Honour is held every day for the respect of Rama in a manner of a king and police personnel are deployed as guards of the temple.

Devotees come from far and every corner of the country throughout the year. The temple is situated next to the Chaturbhuj Temple and the market springs up around it.

During the festival of Rama Navami, the temple is a site of several activities. Vivaha Panchami in November/December is another colourful festival at the temple celebrating the wedding of Lord Rama and Sita.

The Best Sunset Spot Chhatris or Orchha Cenotaphs

Constructed in honour of the rulers of Orchha, these 15 cenotaphs are located on the southern bank of the Betwa River. Most of these unique structures are designed in a three-story pattern and well-preserved.

These are best viewed from the narrow road bridge during the sunset and when sunlight falls on them, they get turned into golden colour so undoubtedly, the cenotaphs are the highlight of Orchha but there is much more to explore.

The Remarkable & Vivid Mahal-e-Jahangir

Jahangir Mahal was built in the 17 th century by Vir Singh Deo to honour Emperor Jahangir on his first arrival to Orchha. As a symbol of greetings, it was filled with every design in a manner of marking the entry of a king.

The main entrance was decorated with two stone carved elephants with a bell. The palace has three stories with 236 chambers. Designed in Hindu and Muslim styles, Jahangir Mahal or the Orchha Palace represents an excellent architectural brilliance.

The whole Orchha Fort complex consists of Jahangir Mahal, Raja Mahal, Sheesh Mahal and Phool Bagh (Garden). The fort complex of Orchha is the best example of a medieval fort palace with ornamented battlements, gateways, and pavilions.

The King’s Palace Within Raja Mahal

In the form of a perfect square or the courtyard was the first part of the palace to be built. The rooms around the courtyard, painted in the Bundela style, served as the private residence of the king, his wives, and children. Here, you will see a five-hundred-year-old water drainage system and many different types of arch in the Raja Mahal.

The Goddess of Wealth & Prosperity Laxmi Narayan Temple

A one-kilometer paved path links the Laxmi Narayan Temple with Ram Raja Temple. As its name says, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Laxmi and a perfect blend of a temple and fort architecture. The murals in vibrant colours depict Hindu deities, scenes from the epics and secular subjects.

Jungle Safari at Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary is spread across an area of 45 km square and lies on the banks of Betwa River. Here, you can spot Chital, Sambar Deer, Chinkara, Nilgai, reptiles and the sanctuary houses more than 100 bird species – the reason it is referred as a Bird Sanctuary by tourists.

Also, the magnificent flora and fauna enchant you along with a close encounter with nature.

Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary

I was officially charged Rs.200 for my motorbike as the entry fee. Officially, the department charges Rs.50 for walkers/bicycle, Rs.400 for an autorickshaw, Rs.600 for light vehicles (car, jeep) and Rs.1200 for a minibus.

The highlights of Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary are Pachmadia, Shikargah, Betwa Jamni Sangam, Akant Watch Tower, Cycling Route, Picnic Chaupaati and Nature Trail.

A Must Do Thing Rafting at River Betwa

The main adventure in Orchha is river rafting and do never miss to try if it is available because it depends on the water level and rapids at River Betwa. There are two options: 2 km and 6 km.

The safari commences from the scenic Kanchana Ghat to Shiv Ghat making its way through several rapids and passing under the low lying Orchha Bridge. At Shiva Ghat, you take a break for breakfast/lunch. If you opt for 6 km, it carries on to the Note Ghat.

The cost per person varies from Rs.800 to 2000.

Madhya Pradesh Tourism has incorporated a sound and light show that exhibits the history of Orchha and its palaces & monuments portrayed against the backdrop of the fort complex.

Ram Raja Restaurant & Café is the best in Orchha to enjoy freshly prepared local food at a reasonable price. This street-side café is located near the small bridge which connects to the Orchha Fort Complex. They attract tourists by providing a rich taste of pure coffee.

Sheesh Mahal Hotel reflects the rich medieval heritage of India. Situated within the Orchha Fort Complex, it has an excellently designed restaurant that offers delicious dishes along with sumptuous Indian cuisine delicacies. Eat here for the finest dining experience in Orchha.

• If you ask what is special in Orchha, I would like to say the whole Orchha is very special.
• Orchha is perfect for a pre-wedding shoot or you can plan your wedding here for the out-of-the-world experience.
• The word Orchha means hidden. The town is also known as Urchha.
• One should spend at least 2-3 days in Orchha to explore in a great way.
• Orchha is a small town, not very costly but depends on where you stay and how do you roam.
• Once you visit Orchha, you will fall in love with everything here.
• The best time to visit Orchha is either during festivals (Dusshera) or between October to March. Avoid visiting during summers.
• Carry some woolen clothes. Remember to keep a cap, water bottle, sunscreen lotion, sunglasses additionally. Do not forget to thank me later!
