The best way to see Oxford and its beautiful surroundings is on a bicycle. In fact, many locals use bikes to get around the city because Oxford is not the most car-friendly place. The bicycle tour route can vary according to any special requests but generally, the itinerary is as follows.

You will also see many of Oxford university's famous sights as we introduce stories about the university colleges & famous events or personalities.
It is also possible to schedule a pub stop for refreshments and, regardless of the route, you can gain insight into how a boat trip along this route in 1862 inspired Lewis Carroll's story-telling of 'Alice in Wonderland'.

The Dreaming Spires
Oxford bike tours.
Oxford - the 'City of Learning'. For centuries, scholars have studied here, under the ‘Dreaming Spires’, to one day change the world.
The city, which grew out of a Saxon settlement favoring the strategic position of the River Thames at the River Cherwell junction, became the center of British politics during the English Civil War, when Charles I chose Oxford to house his court. A city of incredible historical and cultural interest, Oxford is home to myriad world-famous museums and art galleries, including the Ashmolean Museum (the UK's oldest museum), the University Museum of Natural History (home to the most complete remains of a dodo anywhere on earth), Christ Church Picture Gallery, and Modern Art Oxford.
Yet, undoubtedly, Oxford is a city defined by its university, the oldest in the English-speaking world. 44 prestigious colleges, emblematic of every English architectural style since 1066, are nestled amongst the iconic Radcliffe Camera, Bodleian Library, Clarendon Building, Bridge of Sighs, and Sheldonian Theatre. Between them, students hurry in their gowns and mortarboards, balancing bags of heavy books on their bicycles. Just outside the center, Port Meadow stretches along the Thames River, dotted with quaint barges, where Lewis Carroll drew inspiration for Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland .
By bicycle, you can explore Oxford's most outstanding architecture, charm, and traditions in a single day, and might even leave the city feeling a little more scholarly.

Cycling around Oxford
Bike touring
Not only is the City of Dreaming Spires a phenomenally beautiful place to ride, when you go cycling in Oxford, you’ll soon see it’s set into glorious surroundings too. Both the River Thames and the River Cherwell pass through this world-renowned home of academia, along with the pretty Oxford Canal and myriad streams.
Cycle routes from Oxford lead you out into wonderful countryside where patchwork fields brush up against little woodlands and historic buildings. You’ll find three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) within riding distance of this ancient city and all are places to head if you’re after particularly hilly routes.
Riding through the city is undoubtedly one of the best ways to get to know its history and beauty and you’ll find plenty of cycle paths.
The best cycling routes around Oxford
Sight seeing in oxford loop – bridge of sighs, botanic gardens and wheatley windmill, chiltern hills aonb loop from oxford.
Let us show you the way with the komoot mobile app
Iffley lock – abingdon loop from new marston, isis bridge – iffley lock loop from oxford, kennington-oxford path – isis bridge loop from rose hill, lovely quiet road – swinford toll bridge loop from oxford, godstow abbey – iffley lock loop from blackbird leys, elsfield kicker – stanton st john loop from oxford, barracks lane – brill windmill loop from oxford, brill windmill – views over rspb otmoor loop from oxford, more information, pedaling through ancient history.
Cycling in Oxford is extremely popular, so much so that you’ll find free bicycle pumps available to use at several spots around the city. Exploring the city on two wheels is a wonderful activity, whether you’ve lived here for years or are simply passing through on a cycle tour. Everywhere you look, you’ll be rewarded with exquisite buildings from the university colleges to grand bridges and the cathedral.
Cycle routes from Oxford take you to the Cotswolds AONB, on the edge of which you can ride to the exquisite Blenheim Palace and the nearby remains of North Leigh Roman Villa. A gently undulating route, exploring the rural countryside around here by bike is blissful.
Riding out into the Oxfordshire countryside
Ride south east from Oxford’s cobbled streets and before you know it you’ll be in the Chiltern Hills AONB. In this spectacular landscape you’ll discover plenty of cycleways and family-friendly routes, as well as tougher trails with strenuous hills. The Chilterns are a place of open commons, old woodlands and rolling fields.
Due south of the city, cycle into the North Wessex Downs AONB, passing by the prehistoric Uffington White Horse on the northern boundary. This carved chalk horse is a marvel to behold before pedaling onwards into the stunning, grassy hills of the Downs.
Both the Downs and the Chilterns can be easily reached on day rides but to really explore their forests, hills and valleys, multi-day adventures from Oxford are ideal.
Following rivers and watercourses
Bike rides in Oxford cannot fail to take you along one of the city’s many watercourses. The River Thames, called the Isis in the Oxford area, meanders around the western edge of the city centre while the River Cherwell winds around the east, meeting and joining the Thames in the south. As a result, you can’t pedal very far in the city without crossing a bridge or two and this is one of the reasons why riding here is so charming.
There are cycle-friendly sections of the Thames and you can follow the Oxford Canal for hours upon hours northwards along its peaceful banks. The river and canal trails have a range of surfaces, frequently unsuitable for road bikes.

The Insider’s Guide to Visiting Oxford by Bike
Oxford is a unique place to visit. A place where medieval and modern sit side by side in a fascinating way. There’s so much to see, so to save time and shoe leather it’s best to take an Oxford bike tour. Trust me, it’s the perfect way to see the sights and avoid the tourist hoards that clog the city’s historic (and rather narrow) pavements. I’ve lived in Oxford for many years and still go back to visit friends as well as, why not, take the occasional ride behind the handlebars. So this time, I’ll bring you along – saddle up!
Oxford bike tour map
The cycle lanes can get pretty busy, so our Oxford bike tour will use many cute back streets to avoid the busy main roads and the city’s many buses. So, if you’ve got everything you need, let’s get started!
Pick up your rental bike at Oxford’s Railway Station
You can pick up a Donkey bike in five locations – check all our Oxford bike rentals here . For this tour, you can get a bike at Oxford’s Railway Station , but it’s easy to begin from the Visitor Information Centre too.
Oxford Castle
The castle is only a short bike ride from the train station, but a guided tour of the former fortress and prison will introduce you to centuries of Oxford’s past. You’ll get your first glimpse of the city’s dreaming spires from the 900-year-old St. George’s Tower, and can explore the ancient crypt of St. George’s Chapel and the mound of the Norman Motte and Bailey castle. The terrifying tales of the 18th-century tower and prison will make you glad you live in the 21st century.
Events and activities take place here year-round, including ghost hunts and a Shakespeare Festival. If you forgot breakfast, you can eat at several cafes, restaurants and bars in the Oxford Castle Quarter . But if you’re already eager for more, let’s move on…
Christ Church College
Of course, most people visit Oxford because of its world-famous university. It’s made up of more than 40 colleges, each with different rules and traditions. The biggest, and arguably most famous, is Christ Church (aka The House). It was founded by King Henry VIII (the one with six wives) and is open 10:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Saturday and 2:00pm to 5:00pm on Sunday.
The huge Tom Tower on St Aldgate’s marks the main entrance to Christ Church, where you’ll have to pay to go in unless you’re a student or Oxford resident, but it’s worth it. As well as beautiful architecture, Christ Church has its own cathedral and picture gallery , and its dining hall and cloisters doubled as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films.
Christ Church Meadow
This stop in our Oxford bike tour represents the best spot to chill, have a picnic or walk along the River Thames. You’ll have to lock your rental bike somewhere, though, as no cycling is allowed in Christ Church Meadow. If you go for a stroll, you’ll find many college boathouses clustered along the Isis (the Oxford name for the Thames). In term-time, you’ll also see college rowing eights practising along this stretch of water.
Magdalen College
Once you’ve had enough of longhorn cows and boats, hop back on your rental bike and cycle down Oxford’s most breathtaking (and busiest) street, the High. Alongside quaint shops, cafes and pubs you’ll see several more Oxford colleges until you reach another Oxford gem, Magdalen College. Magdalen feels more intimate than Christ Church, with smaller, older quadrangles and gardens and a magnificent deer park. It’s open between 1pm and dusk or 6pm most of the year, and noon to 7pm between June and September.
Magdalen (pronounced ‘maud-lin’) was once home to famous authors Oscar Wilde and C. S. Lewis, whose Narnia books must have been inspired by the enchanting landscape of the deer park. Scenes from Harry Potter were also filmed here. It’s a magical placefor walk on a sunny afternoon.
Radcliffe Square
Leaving Magdalen behind, head back up the High towards Radcliffe Square. Arguably one of the prettiest places in Europe, the square is bound on four sides by the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin , All Souls College , Brasenose College and the world-famous Bodleian Library . Its quirky rotunda, the Radcliffe Camera, sits right in the middle. Feel free to park your rental bike and enjoy the view, it’s well worth it.
Bridge of Sighs
As you cycle past the Bodleian Library on one side and Hertford College on the other you’ll notice a rather peculiar Venetian-looking bridge curving over the entrance of the medieval New College Lane. This is ‘the Bridge of Sighs’ that links Hertford’s Old Quadrangle to its New Quadrangle. Take a moment to admire its magnificent strangeness before pedalling on. This is why people visit Oxford!
Oxford University Museum of Natural History
This is going to be one of the highlights of your Oxford bike tour. It’s a brilliant place to explore the natural world, whether you enjoy quivering beneath the skeleton of a T-Rex, marvelling at hundreds of colourful butterflies or gawping at a stuffed dodo. The glass roof of the museum is an architectural marvel, and there’s a lovely café upstairs where you can grab a bite to eat. It’s open 10:00am to 5:00pm every day.
At the back of the main museum the extraordinary Pitt Rivers Museum is home to a vast collection of anthropological and archaeological wonders, including a full size North American totem pole, Egyptian mummies and sarcophagi, shrunken head trophies from the Amazon rainforest, and a large collection of traditional Inuit clothing. It’s open from 10:00am to 4:30pm Tuesday to Sunday, and from noon to 4:30pm on Mondays. Admission to both museums is free.
Port Meadow
By now you’ve probably had as much history and culture as you can take for one day, so it’s time to cycle to the pub. Cycling through the popular Jericho suburb, you’ll find a large area of common land , another remnant of medieval England – you’re heading towards the much loved Perch on the other side of the river. Now your Oxford bike tour has almost come to an end, you can relax with a drink in the spacious garden or cosy up by the fire depending on the weather. The food here comes highly recommended too.

Setting out from Oxford, visit the birthplaces of Shakespeare and Churchill, be awed by the gardens of King Charles III’s Highgrove estate and explore the Roman ruins of Bath.
With stunning views, excellent accommodation, wonderful pubs and outstanding cuisine, Active England promises a guided Cotswold cycling experience you’ll never forget.

Your Itinerary
Saddling up in Oxford, we begin the tour with a 55-mile ride to Stratford-upon-Avon, a medieval market town in England’s West Midlands and the 16th-century birthplace of William Shakespeare. Cycling through the quintessential countryside of the Cotswolds, our route brings us face-to-face with plenty of iconic English landmarks. From Blenheim Palace, World Heritage Site and the home of Winston Churchill, to the stunning Hidcote Gardens, internationally renowned for its collection of outdoor “rooms.” We’ll also find no shortage of favourite local places to stop for lunch, including The Deli at Chadlington, and traditional Cotswold pub, The Chequers. After a long day’s ride, we rest up for the evening in historic Stratford-upon-Avon.
Setting out from Stratford, today we cycle 63 miles to the beautiful Cotswold town of Tetbury. The longest ride on the tour, we take another stunning route over rolling green hills and down charming country lanes. Along the way, we visit sites such as Broadway Tower, where we’ll enjoy awe-inspiring views over 16 counties in England and Wales, the awe-inspiring lavender fields at Snowshill and King Charles III’s famous gardens at Highgrove. We’ll also find plenty more traditional pubs at which to stop for lunch, such as The Stump at Cirencester and The Bell at Sapperton, before finally finishing up in Tetbury.
Today we continue south-west, cycling 20 miles to the historic city of Bath. Taking advantage of a slightly shorter ride, our Active England guide will show you all of the city’s unmissable sites, from Bath cathedral and the Georgian-inspired Royal Crescent to the incredible Roman Baths, one of the world’s best-preserved Roman remains. At the end of the day, we’ll rest up at our hotel ahead of a longer ride in the morning. If you’ve still got some miles in the tank, there are some extra options on traffic-free routes towards Bristol.
Leaving Bath, we cycle north, riding 60 miles into the heart of the Cotswolds. Along the way, we’ll have chance to visit the historic town of Bradford-on-Avon and the pristine Cotswold Water Park, stopping for lunch in the excellent Potting Shed pub in Crudwell. We finish today’s ride in Burford, one of the prettiest villages in the Cotswolds. Renowned for its bustling high street and vibrant atmosphere, we stop here for the night in a cosy local pub.
For our final ride of the tour, we complete our loop by cycling 35 miles back into Oxford. On arrival, we take the opportunity to explore one of the world’s most beautiful university cities, with our Active England guide leading you on a tour of the famous Oxford colleges, Bodleian Library and Radcliffe Camera. As the day draws to a close, we enjoy one last dinner together before spending a final night at our hotel.
After a relaxed breakfast, our tour ends at Oxford railway station, with London only an hour away. Wherever your journey takes you next, our guides will be on hand to provide all the help you need.

Pre & Post Tour Travel
Pick-up location: Oxford railway station. Our cycling holidays are designed to be completely stress-free, with the start of our tours sitting within easy reach of London, Bristol or the Midlands. This tour begins from Oxford, a direct 1-hour train journey out of London, although it can also be reached directly from London Heathrow via the Heathrow Express.
End-of-tour location: Oxford Railway Station
What is the best way to get out of London into the Countryside? The best way out of London and into the Cotswolds is by train, out of Paddington, and directly into Oxford station, Moreton-in-Marsh or Bath. All of our cycling trips begin from these locations so you can arrive relaxed, refreshed and ready to start your tour. If you prefer to drive there is station parking available.
Can I do a cycling tour as a solo traveller? All our trips are open for single travellers to join. You will have a great time on our cycling tours whether travelling on your own, as a couple, family or group, meeting like-minded people on our guided trips, or choosing your own adventure on our self-guided tours. “As a single female, I would not hesitate to go on another Active England trip as a solo traveller”. S.G.
Are the roads safe to cycle on in England and the Cotswolds? Our cycling routes are carefully chosen to ensure we bike on the quietest country lanes, with the best views of the Cotswolds! Drivers in the Cotswolds are very polite and guests have always felt safe and secure when riding our routes, check out our Trip Advisor Reviews from guests who have cycled with us: “I was concerned about riding in traffic, but for the most part there were not that many cars. The people are very watchful and careful, they wait and allow cyclist to go ahead. The Cotswolds and very beautiful, rural and unspoiled. I loved the small towns and the beautiful countryside. I would absolutely do it again with Active England. Loved it all.” E.C.
How hilly are the Cotswolds? The Cotswolds are a range of hills, with its name stemming from ‘Cote’ meaning sheep enclosure and ‘wold’ meaning hills. There are therefore lots of hills and incredible views from the top! However, you will able to miss out some of the steeper inclines – or add in some trickier climbs for those looking to stretch their legs. There are routes for everyone and with our routes we can tailor your tour to your preferences. We also have e-bikes available on request to make your holiday care-free!
Do you have E-Bikes available? Absolutely! Our e-bikes allow our guests to go the distance without the slog, to enjoy the countryside at their own pace and to provide assistance that will get you up any hill. They are as good on rural country roads as on canal tow-paths and rail to trail tracks. Safe and easy to use, these e-bikes are perfect for all abilities.
What to pack for a cycling holiday? We provide bikes, helmets, cycle bags and all the cycling essentials you will need. All you need to bring are clothes suitable for cycling in, and your enthusiasm! You can of course use your own saddle and pedals if you prefer. We will transfer your luggage to each hotel, so you don’t need to worry about carrying everything you want for evenings out of the saddle!
How fit do I need to be to join this trip? This tour is not for the faint-hearted. We’ll be cycling over 50 miles a day, everyday so you need to make sure you are comfortable in the saddle and have some fuel in your legs!
Which cycling holiday should I choose? In the Cotswolds we offer a range of guided or self-guided tours to suit everyone!

Carbon footprint.
What’s the Number? Nearly everything has a carbon footprint. Together with ecollective, we’ve measured the carbon impact of not only every tour we operate but our entire business. We’ve taken into account greenhouse gas emissions across the business including office, travel, website, vehicles, accommodation, activities, food, suppliers…
What does the number mean? We’re going to improve this by measuring and reducing our footprint each year. That means working with our suppliers to make changes that have a more positive impact on us and the planet. What does this look like in reality?
- Redesign trips to reduce our carbon impact
- Working closely with all our suppliers across England to join us on our decarbonisation journey
- Switching up our vehicle fleet to electric
- Investing in projects that permanently remove carbon from the atmosphere for any emissions that remain.
We’ve got a long way to go but we’re on our way to net-zero
We’re committed to reducing our impact on the planet and working towards a sustainable future. We’ve taken ownership of our carbon footprint and are on a mission to reduce our emissions year on year.

Best Of Both Worlds
The walking element of the tour takes us not only into the scenic landscape of Christ Church Meadows, but also inside the colleges themselves and the Bodleian Library. Meanwhile, the Bike Tour gives you an exhilarating ride around this ancient city and its gorgeous nearby green spaces. We’ll visit some of Oxford’s oldest parts, and also touch on the quirkier side of the University’s history.
Beyond Oxford Centre
With 38 colleges, faculty buildings and libraries spread all around Oxford City, and no central defined space being “Oxford University”, this tour aims to tackle this problem with both walking and bike options allowing us to take both a granular and a broad approach to exploring Oxford. From the dramatic modern architecture of the Blavatnik Centre (not covered by any other tour company in Oxford), or the more typical and medieval façade of Magdalen College, home of Oscar Wilde and C.S Lewis with its imposing grotesques; this tour has it all.
Go Inside Oxford University
From one of the oldest Colleges at Oxford, to seeing a Harry Potter film site, this tour covers everything you could want from your visit.

DAYS 1 & 2. ARRIVE IN OXFORD
Optional ride: 19 km Relax and enjoy Oxford ready for a full day of sightseeing, aside from your arrival day. It is a phenomenal city to discover with ancient buildings, lovely pubs, museums, magnificent architecture, galleries and more. There are many walking tours to join and cafes to visit. Or take a side trip to Blenheim Palace, ancestral home of Winston Churchill. An incredible city to explore, enjoy its ambience of lively students, great restaurants and many famous historical monuments. You will stay here for two nights. You will meet our representative tonight or in the morning of Day 2 to get set up on your bikes. You will find the day slips by quickly here but if still keen to do more cycling, there is a rest day ride to try out.
DAY 3. OXFORD TO STREATLEY
RIDE: 27 km or 38 km Start the day in famous Oxford, seat of higher education which has seen 27 British Prime Ministers graduating from there and many more International heads of state and leaders of industry. Impressive. What an exciting day’s English cycle ride today. Follow the upper Thames and you view traditional English villages and rural landscape galore. Green pastures, graceful willows and bobbing skiffs. Streatley, a settlement for over a millennium, it was even mentioned in the Doomsday book (a census of towns in 1086, ordered by William the Conqueror). Many medieval buildings line the main street, making it a nice visual picture. Visit the enchanting 15th century pub, The Bull or even St. Mary’s Church, in which there is an Anglo-Saxon warrior buried in the cemetery. Please note: the shorter ride is only available in July and August. It also includes a boat hop at the start of the day to Abingdon and its ancient abbey.
DAY 4. STREATLEY TO HENLEY
RIDE: 30 km There is a 5-minute train hop from your hotel in Streatley to start the day. Spot the area’s most charming English villages on today’s bike trip, from the small village of Streatley with its pretty situation on the Thames. Cycle along the Thames’ banks with fresh air and gliding waterfowl. Henley, your destination, is known for its rowing and regattas, so the Thames is an integral part of the lifestyle here. Visit its River and Rowing Museum to really understand its hold on this town. It is an attractive place with Tudor housing and nice river views. Take a pint in one of its atmospheric pubs. A great place to explore.
DAY 5. HENLEY TO MARLOW
RIDE : 18 km Today it’s a shorter ride, so you will have time enough to explore The River and Rowing Museum in Henley before your departure. Your bike trip in this traditional area of England continues through the beautiful Chiltern Hills, home to green forests, vistas and birdlife. In August, you can take a boat trip to avoid the rolling hills. Although Mary Shelly put the finishing, horrifying touches on her masterpiece ‘Frankenstein’ in Marlow, it’s not a frightening place. In fact, her house, Albion House, is a tranquil spot on the river. Today Marlow has a bustling high street and has a reputation of some very fine eats with several gastropubs and even 3 Michelin starred restaurants. Try them out if your budget dares!
DAY 6. MARLOW TO WINDSOR
RIDE: 30 km OR 57 km Cycle beside the Thames today, traversing it several times today, criss-crossing via villages, hamlets and iron bridges. Bike along to Windsor and its incredible castle. This is a must visit to see one of the wonders of English Royal Heritage – King Charles maybe staying today! Pedal the magnificent Great Walk to the castle, scene of many royal parades and get some extra miles with a circular ride through the Great Park. Visit St George’s chapel, the place of Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding.
DAY 7. WINDSOR TO HAMPTON WICK
RIDE: 37 km Spend the morning sightseeing Windsor further. It’s a delightful place to wander, see if you can spot the famous Eton school across the river! Then start cycling towards, the Palace of former King Henry the 8th and his wives’ home and enjoy its laid-back ambience. Visit Hampton Court. Magnificent and sturdy, this palace housed the who’s who of British Royalty for 500 years. Most famously, the impressive and infamous King Henry VIII who never gave up his quest for a male heir. He also loved Hampton Court and built it to be a pleasure palace of modernity, remodelling it several times. All six of his wives spent time there and it is still a fascinating place to visit.
DAY 8. HAMPTON WICK CIRCULAR RIDE TO KEW
RIDE: 25 km or 32 km English castles & Palaces! Be prepared for stunning river scenes of swans and draping willows on today’s cycle. Pedal along by Kew Palace (longer ride option) and her famous gardens and on through Richmond, the royal gateway park to Hampton Court. It is a bike ride full of England’s popular sights the world recognises. There is an option to enjoy a boat ride as well along the scenic river.
DAY 9. DEPART FROM HAMPTON WICK
We wish you great onward travels today perhaps to London central a short train ride away to enjoy this great city!
EXTRA DAYS IN LONDON
Don’t miss all the things you can do whether you visit Buckingham Palace, Oxford Street or Kensington Palace in Hyde Park, all are exciting, just before your trip starts! There are so many pop cultural sights to check off that it may be hard to decide where to catch the Underground to next. The annual Red, White, and Blue Ride, Hosted by Memphis Hightailers Bicycle Club.
The Oasis Bike Shop takes in used or new bikes in any condition and refurbishes them when possible to be reused by those in need. Bikes that are not repairable are used for parts.
This ministry is not just focused on the kids but also those adults that have no other form of transportation. The bikes are typically earned through doing some type of supervised community service. All bikes earned through this method come with a bike lock, helmet and a safety class. Additionally, they are focused on taking the youth on outdoor field trips to parks or through bike trails in safe, beautiful settings contrary to riding on the streets where they live.
Their desire is to expose their bikers to opportunities beyond the inner city that they can own for themselves. Also, the Oasis Bike Ministry is in need of donated bikes (regardless of condition) and any usable parts you may have. So, if you have an old bike, or an extra front fork, or brakes, or seats, or handlebars, or cables, or chains, or cranks, or bar tape, or literally anything else you think could be used to help restore a bike into riding condition, please bring it with you to the ride. They will be grateful to take it off your hands and get another young boy or girl onto a bike!
Of course, monetary donations are always great. Feel free to add some amount to your ride registration, and these funds will go directly to Oasis.
