Honolulu Manoa Valley Self Guided Tour

I know some tours are pricey and most of them are all day tours. There are a few short hikes around Honolulu, so if you have a half day in Honolulu you might consider the Manoa Valley self guided tour.

This is our number one recommended self-guided tour to Manoa falls. Enjoy the hiking to where Goddess of Rain and Goddess of Rainbow live, according to Hawaiian mythology.

About 15 min by taxi, 30-40 min by public bus from Waikiki. Click to see the map

manoa valley2

It is tourist area, but still a beautiful nature hike. You might not want to do it if it is too cloudy or it is wet and hard to hike. You may feel like “I know this place”…it’s probably because you saw it either on Jurassic park or the TV show “LOST”. They were both filmed in Manoa Valley.

On LOST, check on Episode 1×11 “All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues” Jungle scenes and the banyan tree Charlie was hanging from. Episode 2×15 “Maternity Leave” Jungle scenes with Claire and Ethan.

It’s about 45 minutes to walk to the 150 foot Manoa waterfall.  On the way to the waterfall there are many small pathways on your right, you should take a time to explore them where you will find small trails, small creeks, tiny waterfalls, and many favorite photo spots.

Take your time to listen to the wild birds song, the water sounds and find Hawaii native plants.

Hawaiian fern

I usually wear beach sandals. Some blogs say that’s silly, but I don’t think so. This is not a hard hiking trail at all. On a sunny day it should be totally fine, but after a big rain, it may probably  be too muddy for the beach sandals.

You must have mosquito repellent and a water bottle. I don’t recommend shorts or skirts because of mosquitos!

Bomboo forest

Once you get to the waterfall, you have a choice to go back a trail or keep going to explore “bamboo forest” and two big banyan trees.

Manoa waterfall to the bamboo forest is about a 15 minute walk. When the bamboo forest is finished there are two amazing banyan trees. It is not a hard hike or intense walking. You should keep going to banyan trees. These old trees will impress you with the power of nature.

The Manoa falls trail is easy and very close to Waikiki. When you are looking for something to do for a half day or you on’t want to spend money on a tour, I highly recommend this trail. It is easy, beautiful and a short trip from Honolulu.

If you drive here, note there is a $5 parking fee. Some of the blogs say you can park in the residential area to avoid $5 parking fee. I disagree with this information. Respect locals who live around this area. If there is parking (Only $5!) use it please. In Hawaiian the word please is “Kokua”.

Please note, we do private tours in Oahu and Maui which are fully guided!

During our tours we talk Hawaiian history, legend, and local information. Sometimes paying for a tour seems like a waste of money and in fact I actually didn’t go on tours before I  started this tour company. Since then I have decided to always go for a private tour on the very first day in a new destination. It is worth it just for the information you will learn. If you want to try our private tour, please find out who we are !

CTAHR dean outlines college future: Sustainability, enrollment

  • April 25, 2024

person speaking at podium

The mission of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources ( CTAHR ) is to secure the future of Hawaiʻi by building local self-sufficiency in food and agricultural products, according to CTAHR ’s new Dean Parwinder Grewal who started on March 1 . It was part of Grewal’s first speech to CTAHR faculty and staff at the four-day, state of the college conference in April 2024.

“ CTAHR ’s inclusive vision is to secure the future of Hawaiʻi through collaborative innovation and merging the Western, Asian, Hispanic, and Native Hawaiian knowledge systems,” said Grewal, adding that local self sufficiently has to happen while also, “enhancing the health of Hawaiian ecosystems, families and communities through research, teaching and cooperative Extension.”

Grewal also focused on the challenges in Hawaiʻi that CTAHR research and extension can help address including Hawaiʻi’s energy supply, with more than 80% of the energy being imported (mostly as oil); Hawaiʻi’s food supply with 85–90% of our food being imported; and food security with 11% of families and 1 in 6 children facing food insecurity in the state.

“We can help develop ag stations as hubs of prosperity by establishing sustainable production systems with locally relevant food, feed, forage, fiber, floriculture, timber, seed production, livestock, swine, and small ruminant (sheep, goat) production,” said Grewal.

Grewal also discussed CTAHR ’s student enrollment trends over the past five years. Student numbers have declined since the COVID-19 pandemic, however programs such as natural resources and environmental management, molecular biosciences and bioengineering and more are trending upward. In the past three years CTAHR students have also been awarded $780,618 in scholarships to support student success. Currently 43% of CTAHR students are Hawaiʻi residents with Native Hawaiians representing 13% of the student population.

Grewal also identified supporting student success, cooperative extension workforce and extramural awards as other areas that CTAHR will focus on moving forward. CTAHR faculty had a record year in 2023 with $47 million in extramural awards.

The conference included keynote speakers, educational sessions and showcased research at the symposium. CTAHR faculty and staff had the opportunity to tour some of the CTAHR ‘s research and Extension stations based on Oʻahu.

Rainbow Warriors (men) & Rainbow Wahine (women)

THE RAINBOW

Before 1923, UH teams were nicknamed the “Deans.” Then in the final game of the 1923 season, UH head coach Otto Klum’s squad upset Oregon State, 7-0, at Mo‘ili‘li Field. During the game, a rainbow appeared over the field. Reporters started calling UH teams the Rainbows, and the tradition began that Hawai‘i would not lose a game if a rainbow appeared.

THE WARRIOR

The Warrior holds an honored place in Hawaiian history for it was the warrior who united the Hawaiian Islands under Kamehameha the Great. The Hawaiians expected the warrior to display great strength, skill and a fighting spirit.

The famous and iconic Hawai‘i 5-0 theme song is played at all sporting events.

THE WARRIOR CHANT

The Warrior Ha‘a - a traditional Māori dance, the Warrior football team performs their version of the ha‘a 20 minutes before every game.

Held every fall semester, Homecoming comprises week-long festivities that include a Homecoming Fair, Wahine (Women’s) volleyball game, the Homecoming football game, class reunions and special performances, exhibits, and lectures across campus.

Held every April at Andrews Amphitheater, students celebrate the nearing of semester’s end at the annual Aloha Bash. The event features live performances by some of Hawai‘i’s favorite bands and artists, enhancing students social life experiences on campus.

THE GIFT OF LEI

One of the most unique experiences of living in Hawai‘i and being a student at UH Mānoa is the cultural tradition of lei giving at graduation and on senior night at all of our athletic events. As a celebratory and congratulatory gesture, the tradition of lei giving goes back centuries and is firmly rooted in Hawaiian culture. A lei is a garland of flowers that is worn around the neck and it is customary on special occasions to “lei” the person or individuals who are being honored. Graduation and senior night is a fun and very colorful experience unlike any other!

2020 PREVIEW DAY

On Saturday, April 4, 2020, the campus opens for the “Mānoa Experience - University Preview Day.” The free outdoor event is open to all interested students, families, and community members. Come check out over 200 departments and programs, take tours, enjoy performances, watch demonstrations, and meet with current faculty, staff, and students.
