Planning to Travel?

Planning international travel or going home for summer.

Before traveling abroad it is important to review the following information to be certain you have all necessary signatures and documents.

Update on Change to U.S. Travel Policy Requiring COVID-19 Vaccination for nonimmigrant travel

Last Updated: May 4, 2023 | View the statement on the State Department website

"The Administration will end the COVID-19 vaccine requirements for international air travelers at the end of the day on May 11, the same day that the COVID-19 public health emergency ends. This means starting May 12, noncitizen nonimmigrant air passengers will no longer need to show proof of being fully vaccinated with an accepted COVID-19 vaccine to board a flight to the United States. CDC’s Amended Order Implementing Presidential Proclamation on Safe Resumption of Global Travel During the COVID-19 Pandemic will no longer be in effect when the Presidential Proclamation Advancing the Safe Resumption of Global Travel During the COVID-19 Pandemic is revoked ."

Travel during grace period - NOT PERMITTED

If you are an F-1 student, you have a 60-day grace period after completing your degree. If you are J-1 student, you have a 30-day grace period. This period of time allows you to make plans for your departure. You can travel within the U.S., but if you leave and are planning to reenter, you may not return as an F-1 or J-1 student. You will be re-admitted to the U.S. as a tourist. Consequently, your status and the post-completion benefits, such as OPT for F-1 and AT for J-1 will be negated.

Travel signature

If you are traveling and need a signature on your I-20/DS-2019, be sure to request it at least two weeks before departure. Log in to ISS Connect to complete the Travel Signature Request. It generally takes 7 business days to process your travel signature after you have submitted your request, so please plan accordingly.

Visa renewal

If you are in F-1 or J-1 status and your entry visa expires while you are studying in the U.S. , there is no need to renew your visa as long as you stay in the U.S. and continue your studies.

If you are on OPT in F-1 status or on AT in J-1 status and your F-1 or J-1 visa expired while you were studying in the U.S. , there is no need to renew it as long as you stay in the U.S. and continue your employment or internship.

However, if you travel abroad you must plan to renew your visa, no matter the duration of your international travel. It is not possible to complete this procedure in the U.S. You may renew your visa at a U.S. Consulate in your home country; countries other than your own may impose stricter requirements or may be unwilling to renew a visa for a citizen of another country. To renew an F-1 or J-1 visa, you do not need to pay a SEVIS processing fee. You need to log in to ISS Connect to request a visa renewal letter from ISS, along with a travel signature.

Learn more about the documents you need to compile for your new visa application from the U.S. Consular Services.

Change of status approved students obtaining a visa

If you changed your status to F-1 in the U.S. through the USCIS, you will not have an F-1 visa stamp in your passport. You will have to obtain one while in your home country. Same requirements apply.

The Office promotes international and cross-cultural communication and understanding. ISS assists with matters of special concerns of the international population. ISS is responsible for institutional compliance with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Department of State (DOS) regulations. For detailed information, please visit this website .

Education Abroad

Pace University values an international experience as integral to the student curriculum and Education Abroad supports this endeavor by offering numerous opportunities for study abroad in long, mid, and short-term programs. For semester/year study abroad, students take a normal course load as defined and approved by their academic advisor while enrolled in an international institution for a semester or year. Students pay Pace tuition and are eligible to retain part of their Pace scholarship dependent on the program. Credits transfer back to Pace. Short-term programs include faculty-led programs taught by Pace faculty as well as a variety of courses offered by Pace Global Partners and study abroad providers. These courses are typically offered during January or summer. Pace Education Abroad also assists faculty members interested in organizing faculty-led courses. Education Abroad offers pre-departure orientations, re-entry orientations, as well as advising for all students studying abroad. For more information on study abroad destinations, programs and options please visit our Study Abroad website.

International Academic Support and Programs (IASP)

International Academic Support and Programs (IASP) provides academic, linguistic and cultural support to international students at Pace. IASP houses Global Pathways, F-1 Non-Degree Programs, and International Academic Support. Global Pathways is a bridge program for undergraduate and graduate international students admitted to Pace with a condition to successfully complete a combination of English and academic courses to improve their English proficiency before continuing to their degree program. The Global Pathways Program is designed for international students who meet all of the academic criteria for admission to an undergraduate or graduate degree program at Pace, but do not meet the English language requirement. While in Pathways, students have a chance to improve their English proficiency by taking English courses delivered by Pace’s English Language Institute (ELI) and earn academic credits that will be counted towards their future degree if they complete Pathways successfully and matriculate into their degree program at Pace.  F-1 Non Degree Programs are options for international students to come and study at Pace for a semester at a time and earn credits, rather than complete a full degree at Pace. International Academic Support provides customized resources to the general international student population at Pace in the form of workshops, one on one advising, and English language tutoring. For detailed information, please visit this website .

Study abroad programs.

The Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University has exchange relationships with some of the top law schools in Europe, Australia, Asia and South America. Under these agreements, students may apply to study for a semester or even a full academic year at one of our partner schools. In many cases, classes at the host institutions are taught in English. Upon completion of the exchange semester or year, the credits earned may transfer back to Haub Law and count towards the JD degree. At the same time, our partner schools are sending their own students to take classes at Haub Law, thus increasing the diversity and richness of the classroom experience.

Students may apply to the following institutions for their exchange semester or year:

University of Adelaide , Australia: The Elisabeth Haub School of Law and University of Adelaide signed a Memorandum of understanding which allows 2 students from each Instituition to participate in exchange periods that can be semester, summer and winter.

Fundação Getulio Vargas , Brazil: The Elisabeth Haub School of Law and FGV Rio de Janeiro signed a Memorandum of understanding which allows students from both Institutions to participate in semester and full academic year exchanges.

Universidad Pontificia Comillas , Spain: The Elisabeth Haub School of Law and Universidad Pontificia de Comillas signed a Memorandum of understanding which allows 2 students from both Institutions to participate in semester and full academic year exchanges, with the possibility to obtain an LLM degree.

Statement of Objectives

In accordance with Paragraph I.A.3 of the American Bar Association Criteria for Student Study at a Foreign Institution , the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University issues the following statement of educational objectives that the law school seeks to achieve in allowing students to study abroad for credit towards the JD degree:

In order to compete in an increasingly globalized world, students need opportunities to learn the laws of jurisdictions other than the United States. They also need opportunities to become familiar with other cultures and languages, and to understand how culture and language affect the practice of law, whether in a transnational environment or in a purely domestic practice. Finally, Pace Law students may wish to specialize in the law of a particular country or region, or to study a legal specialty that is not offered at the law school.

Given all of the foregoing objectives, the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University is committed to offering its students the opportunity for meaningful study abroad with a diverse range of partner schools around the world.

Eligibility for Exchange Programs

To be eligible for an exchange program, students must have completed their first year of law school and have a GPA of at least 3.0. It is strongly recommended that they complete the required courses before going abroad, including Professional Responsibility, the Upper Class Writing Requirement and the Upper Class Skills Requirement. These requirements cannot generally be met with courses taken abroad.

All students considering an exchange program are expected to consult the Registrar’s Office beforehand to make sure that their proposed study abroad will allow them to fulfill all academic requirements for graduation.

Students interested in an exchange program start the process by making an appointment at the Office of International Affairs and Graduate Programs, Preston Hall 204. They should neither contact nor apply to the foreign institution until Pace Law has approved this internal application.

Approval and selection for study abroad will be dependent upon several criteria including an applicant's proposed plan of study and academic achievements.

How to Apply

The following documents must be submitted to the Office of International Affairs and Graduate Programs, Preston Hall 204.

Application deadlines are april 15 for Fall Semester programs and october 15 for Spring Semester programs.

  • Application form The application form should include the list of courses, credits and descriptions, as well as the educational objective for each student, where its explained how the proposed study abroad experience will complement the student's academic and professional objectives.
  • Letter of Good standing
  • Law School Transcript (an unofficial copy is acceptable)
  • Most study abroad programs are taught in English. If the program is taught in a language other than English, you will have to submit  evidence of proficiency in the language of instruction.

Transfer Credits

Haub Law JD students may earn a maximum of 30 credits for study abroad. The following rules apply in order to ensure correct transfer of academic credits earned abroad. Credits toward the J.D. degree for all foreign study shall not exceed one-third of the credits required for the J.D. degree at the law school.

  • Before going abroad, applicants must submit a Course Description Approval form for approval by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Along with this form, the applicant must indicate all proposed course titles, descriptions and academic credits. When signed by the Associate Dean, this document will be filed by the Registrar’s Office for reference when the student returns from abroad. If you (i) do not obtain advance approval of your proposed courses, or (ii) obtain advance approval but then take courses different from those approved, you accept all risk that your study abroad credits might not be accepted by Pace Law.
  • Academic credits are calculated according to the ABA standard by (i) counting minutes spent in class for each course taken at the host institution and (ii) converting at the rate of 700 minutes = one credit.
  • To receive credit, students must earn a passing grade in each course taken abroad. Note that while credits may transfer, the grades themselves do not. Therefore, grades earned abroad do not appear on a student’s Pace Law transcripts, nor are they counted as part of a student’s GPA.
  • At the host institution, students must register for the equivalent of a full-time Pace Law course load, using the credit calculation above, in order to fulfill residency requirements.
  • Courses taken abroad must not duplicate coursework taken at Pace Law.
  • Under ABA rules, students may not receive credit for visits to legal and government institutions, except under limited circumstances. Nor may credit be granted for distance education courses or externship placements.

Financial Aid

Under the terms of our exchange agreements, students participating in an exchange program pay their full tuition to their home institution, and do not pay tuition to the host institution. Therefore, students must continue to pay their full tuition to Haub Law while on exchange.

All financial aid and scholarship awards will also apply for a study abroad exchange program as long as the applicable criteria for maintaining the financial aid or scholarship are met. Students may apply for financial aid to cover tuition as well as travel and living expenses for an approved semester abroad. For further information about financial aid, students should contact the Pace Financial Aid Office.

Travel and living expenses while on exchange are solely the student’s responsibility, and can vary considerably by destination, local economic conditions and currency exchange rates. Some examples of these expenses include airfare, ground transportation, passport and visa requirements, insurance, housing, meals, books, personal expenses and any medical expenses not covered by insurance.

In order to maintain residency requirements, students must enroll at the host institution for at least the equivalent of thirteen (13) credits. Host institutions generally do not operate on the same credit system as US law schools. As stated above, academic credits are calculated by (i) counting minutes spent in class for each course taken at the host institution and (ii) converting at the rate of 700 minutes = one credit.

Students are required to maintain health insurance coverage for the duration of their overseas study and will be required to show proof of insurance prior to departure.

Students covered under the Pace University policy have coverage abroad. Should medical treatment abroad be necessary, students pay out-of-pocket for services, get an itemized bill in US currency, and submit a claim upon their return. Under the Pace University policy, students may also order up to a four month supply of their prescription medications prior to departure. This order must be placed at least two months in advance of their departure date. For further information, students may contact the Office of Student Services.

Students not covered by the Pace University health insurance policy are strongly advised to check with their insurer before departure, as not all US health insurance policies will cover students while they are abroad.

Students may also consider arranging for specific coverage from one of the many companies offering travel medical insurance. The following list of companies specialized in travel medical insurance for exchange students is compiled by NAFSA: Association of International Educators and is provided for information only. Pace University does not endorse any of these companies.

Travel Warnings or Advisories

Students are required to check the US State Department Alerts and Warnings Website and the US State Department Country Specific Information for any travel alerts or warnings that may exist for the country or region to which they intend to travel. They should familiarize themselves with any special circumstances that could impact their safety while participating in the study abroad program.

Please refer to the Alerts and Warnings Website well in advance of your departure and continue to check back regularly for updates until your return home.

It is also advisable to participate in the US State Department Smart Traveler Enrollment Program during your stay abroad. This new on-line program is a more convenient alternative to the former in-person consular registration system for US citizens living or studying abroad.

Disabilities

Please be aware that disability accommodations may be limited or unavailable outside the United States. Mobility International USA can assist students with information.

Passport and Visas

Plan ahead to be sure you have a valid passport for travel. At a minimum, your passport should be valid for the entire study abroad period plus six months. US citizens may find complete information on obtaining a passport from the US State Department Passport Website .

Students are responsible for determining whether they need a visa in addition to their passports, and if so, applying for a visa at the appropriate consulate of the host country.

Travel Waiver Form

Pace requires students to sign a Travel Waiver and Release Form prior to participating in a foreign exchange program.

In an Emergency

24-hour contact information.

An emergency is any situation that jeopardizes the Pace University student(s) physical or mental health, safety, well-being, or program participation and/or requires the intervention of program staff. Such emergencies include, but are not limited to: civil disobedience, natural disasters, severe or prolonged illness or injury requiring hospitalization, disciplinary action, emotional or behavioral disorders, illegal actions (i.e., drug use), absence from program site, and academic probation, etc.

In the event of an emergency, students are instructed to contact the appropriate on-site program staff immediately. The on-site staff in turn will contact a member of the Pace Education Abroad team (in NYC) who may contact the student's emergency contact (depending on the situation).

If a family member or friend is contacted by a student about an emergency and it is unclear whether or not the on-site staff are aware of the situation, they should call the appropriate Pace Security office :

  • New York City: (212) 346-1800
  • Pleasantville: (914) 773-3400

Pace Security will then contact the appropriate Pace Education Abroad team member (or other Pace University staff). The Pace Security number is answered 24/7. It is important to leave a detailed message with the following information:

  • Your name (who is reporting the incident)
  • Your contact information
  • Country and program of study
  • Student's name
  • Date and time of the occurrence
  • Description of the occurrence
  • Actions taken thus far

In the event of natural, political, or social emergencies, Pace Education Abroad will coordinate with the on-site staff or U.S.-based program contacts. The on-site staff will seek advice from local authorities and the U.S. Consulate or Embassy nearest to the program location. Assistance will be managed in coordination with the Pace-designated insurance provider that Pace students are mandated to purchase for their semester abroad.

Parents, family, and friends are asked to communicate with Pace Education Abroad in order to allow on-site staff to focus on working with students and local officials.

In case of Medical Emergency Abroad

Students should call the insurance provider, AXA 24/7 Travel Assistance Services at +1 (855) 327-1425 , before seeking medical assistance because AXA will help them locate a qualified health care provider, make appointments, and pay for services abroad — making it a cashless process for students (rather than seeking reimbursement after the fact). Here is a full description of the International Travel Insurance policy (PDF) and a quick snapshot of the benefits (PDF) . Read more about the insurance coverage .

Under the Pace-provided international emergency insurance, the cost of COVID testing is not covered if considered preventative, routine, or elective. It is only covered if ordered by a doctor as part of course of treatment experiencing COVID symptoms.

Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)

We strongly suggest that all students register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) – a free service of the U.S. Department of State. The STEP program allows students to receive important up-to-date safety information about the destination city/country. In the case of emergency, including a natural disaster or civil unrest, it allows the local U.S. Embassy to communicate to the student. And, it helps family and friends get in touch in the event of an emergency. They have a free iPhone app that students can download for easy mobile access: Smart Traveler .

For semester abroad programs, flight arrangements are the responsibility of the student. If a group flight is recommended, it will be communicated to students by Education Abroad.

For faculty-led study abroad programs, a suggested flight routing option will be provided in accordance with the program dates.

Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance

For all study abroad programs, Pace recommends that you purchase trip cancellation and/or interruption insurance (known as CFAR/IFAR)... just in case. Such insurance plans can provide financial protection in the event that a student must unexpectedly cancel or interrupt their study abroad program and related travels; having it may prevent unforeseen circumstances from presenting a substantial financial loss for students who must later withdraw from a program to which they are committed. We recommend the students purchase Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) insurance for any prepaid, non-refundable trip costs (e.g. study abroad program fees, airfare, quarantine expenses due to positive COVID test). Under the Pace-provided international insurance, the cost of COVID testing is only covered if ordered by a doctor as part of treatment. .

China firms investing abroad at fastest pace in 8 years

pace university travel abroad

BEIJING - China’s overseas investments are heading for an eight-year high as its dominant firms build more factories abroad, a shift that could soften criticism of Beijing’s export drive.

Chinese companies made 243 billion yuan (S$46.6 billion) in foreign direct investment (FDI) from January to March, data released last week showed. That was the highest first-quarter figure since 2016 – before a crackdown on capital outflows – and up almost 13 per cent from a year earlier.

Leading the push are firms in industries where China is racing ahead of rivals, such as electric vehicles (EVs) and solar energy. These investments may help to tamp down trade tensions – by creating jobs and economic growth in overseas markets, instead of flooding them with exports that threaten to put local producers out of business.

“China wants to produce overseas so the trade surplus is reduced and, most importantly, overcapacity is reduced,” said Dr Alicia Garcia Herrero, chief Asia- Pacific economist at Natixis. “I expect this pace to continue very aggressively. But they will still face protectionism.”

Geopolitical competition – especially with the United States and Europe – means investment from China may not always be welcome.

‘Huge suspicion’

Japan in the 1980s was able to use overseas investment by its world-leading carmakers to smooth diplomatic ties. But it was not a strategic competitor with the US in the way China is today. That means Beijing might not be able to follow suit, according to Professor Bert Hofman from the National University of Singapore and a former World Bank country director for China.

“There’s a huge suspicion against Chinese investments” in the US and Europe, he said.

There is no official breakdown yet for where investments in 2024 or the previous year have gone.

In 2022, about three-quarters of Chinese FDI was in Asia – though that figure is skewed because much of it goes to Hong Kong and is then rerouted to other countries, or even back to the mainland in what is known as “round-tripping”. Almost 17 per cent of investment was in manufacturing, the second-biggest single sector.

A separate report released this week showed a surge in Chinese manufacturing investment in Asean countries, which almost quadrupled in 2023. At US$26 billion (S$35.4 billion), it was nearly twice the combined total for US, South Korean and Japanese firms.

Chinese businesses have ploughed cash into processing key materials, such as nickel mines and smelters in Indonesia. They are making downstream investments, too. Chery Automobile this week announced plans to become the latest Chinese carmaker to set up a plant in Thailand, aiming to start EV production in 2025.

Chery signed another deal in April to take over an old Nissan factory in Spain and produce electric cars there. BYD, the world’s biggest EV maker, began work in March on a factory in Brazil – its first outside of Asia – and aims to start output by early 2025. It also has a big project in Hungary, which has become a hub of Chinese business activity in Europe.

The Rick Steves guide to life

Travel mogul. philanthropist. legal weed champion. the real rick steves is so much more complex than who you see on tv..

pace university travel abroad

EDMONDS, Wash. — At first glance, it is hard to tell that Rick Steves is protesting.

In the center of his hometown, America’s favorite travel host is perched on the edge of a fountain roundabout engaging in some friendly civil disobedience. As cars circle the intersection, Steves smiles and waves, looking more like an Elf on a Shelf than an angry picketer. This is his way of reminding people he wishes they’d stop driving here.

Steves’s family moved to Edmonds when he was 12, and the 68-year-old is still happy to call it home. Rather than relocate to his beloved Europe, he dreams of bringing some European sensibilities to the edge of the Puget Sound, less than 20 miles north of Seattle.

When he’s not traveling around Europe, writing about Europe or running his multimillion dollar European tour company, the prolific TV host and author likes to squeeze in some local activism. The roundabout routine is his push to block off Edmonds’s very American Main Street for pedestrians. If you squint at it, you can see what Steves sees: this would be the perfect place for a lively town square.

“I like a lot of things about Europe but I love the urban energy of Europe. I love the piazza,” Steves said in a wistful tone you might recognize from PBS. “We don’t have a piazza.”

Unfortunately for Steves, the voting majority of the city does not love the idea of parking their SUVs farther away to shop. So despite his Boy Scout enthusiasm, the most famous man in Edmonds must keep up the perch-and-wave. This is not his only crusade.

Spend any amount of time with Steves, and you’ll encounter a total ham who loves a zany bit. But if you ask him about serious issues like car-free zones, he’ll bring up other causes that are dear to him: affordable housing, supporting the arts, creating senior centers for the elderly to age with dignity.

He’s anti-Trump and pro-cannabis. He does not care if that is bad for business.

The average Rick Steves fan has likely missed this side of him. On TV they see an always-sunny history lover who makes going abroad feel approachable for the average American. That’s an incomplete picture, like thinking you know Paris because you’ve seen the Eiffel Tower on YouTube.

Meet him in Edmonds, and he’ll fill in the rest.

It may look like a lot of gallivanting, but being Rick Steves takes a lot of work.

He spends three months of the year overseas, researching, writing, recording, refining tours, updating guidebooks. If he’s not planning or producing content, he’s often doing promotional events across the United States. This year Steves is celebrating the 40th edition of his first book, “Europe Through the Back Door.” Over the course of his career, he’s built a privately held company that generates $120 million in revenue a year, published 110 books, filmed 12 seasons of “Rick Steves’ Europe” and produced more than 750 podcast episodes.

“It’s just like coordinating a three-ring circus,” Steves said.

That is: really fun, sort of exhilarating and extremely complicated. To pull this off, Steves does not observe the French 35-hour workweek. He’s a workhorse with a reputation for keeping a frenetic pace year-round.

“It’s more of an American work culture,” Amy Duncan, Steves’s communications director, told me. “He’s an unapologetic capitalist but he is also a socialist.”

He makes enough money to fly first class, but he only sits in economy, claiming he doesn’t mind being cramped.

“It never occurred to me that I’m suffering,” he said. “As long as I’ve got an aisle and a seat that reclines, I’m happy.”

Actually, Steves believes airlines should only have one class. It’s part of his egalitarian worldview. He’s also anti-points and anti-miles, refusing to sign up for airline loyalty programs because he believes they bully us into complicating our lives.

Steves also enforces a self-imposed “ carbon tax ” on his tour company, which takes more than 30,000 people to Europe annually. For every customer, Steves invests $30 to atone for emissions created by their flights between the United States and Europe. Last year, that added up to $1 million donated to a portfolio of organizations, Steves said.

“I don’t need to be a slave to the quarterly profit statement. I want to be around and profitable in 10 years from now in a world that you can travel in that’s stable,” Steves said. “This is a smart investment and it’s an ethical expense that I should pay for.”

Rick Steves will tell you he’s motivated by making money; the more he can earn, the more good he can do with it.

“Vicarious consumption, that’s one of my things,” Steves said.

After amassing a windfall from the 2001 George W. Bush tax cuts for high earners, Rick Steves donated $1 million to support the local symphony and performing arts center. In 2005, he used retirement savings to buy a 24-unit apartment complex for the local YWCA’s use as transitional housing for women and children. He figured he’d eventually sell the complex and live on the earnings. About a decade later, he changed his mind and donated the complex valued at $4 million.

He also gave more than $4 million to help build the Edmonds Waterfront Center, a vibrant gathering place for seniors where his daughter had her wedding in 2021. And he gave another $2 million for a similar center in the nearby city of Lynnwood, which broke ground in mid-April .

“Rick puts his money where his mouth is,” said Nancy Leson, a former Seattle Times food critic who used to let Steves’s daughter babysit her son. She’s appreciated his regular presence in the community, like hosting events for local politics at his house and shopping at the farmers market .

“He changed travel,” local resident Karen Howe said on her way into the Waterfront Center with a friend. She’s used Steves’s guidebooks for years. “He’s introduced us to places that most of us would never think of going.”

Rick Steves hasn’t won his piazza battle, but he has brought European touches to Edmonds. At the Rick Steves’ Europe headquarters, there’s an E.U. flag hanging from the mocha brick facade. And gargoyles that drain rainwater, just like at the Notre Dame cathedral.

“Gargoyles scare away evil spirits,” Steves points out, unable to suppress his inner tour guide.

Here Steves employs more than 100 people: editors, audio producers, tour specialists and cartographers such as Dave Hoerlein, his first employee. That’s excluding the fleet of guides and drivers he contracts across the pond to shepherd tour customers.

Inside, he bounds through a maze of cubicles, his neck craned forward, always at an eager pace. His 6-foot frame appears leaner than previous seasons of his life, but his signature look is familiar. No, not khakis and a button-down. That’s vintage Rick. These days, he wears dark jeans and a button-down, plus a thin scarf and leather sneakers.

During a day of meetings, Steves’s fjord-blue eyes lit up at the minutia of the business. He went over new maps with Hoerlein. He and longtime co-author Cameron Hewitt addressed problems like finding a “less glitzy” stop on the Amalfi Coast that’s not Sorrento. They discussed whether a place is worth visiting after it’s gotten too popular, and Steves indulged in some gallows humor.

“It’s going to be like holding the corpse of a loved one who just died,” he said.

His critics argue the “Rick Steves Effect” can turn a charming village, restaurant or museum into a tourist magnet. Matthew Kepnes, the travel writer behind the blog Nomadic Matt , points to the Swiss town Zermatt, which he says Steves put on the map, and has since dealt with overtourism . You’re bound to bump into groups with Rick Steves guidebooks in Italy’s increasingly crowded Cinque Terre.

Whether Steves is actually to blame for changing a place is up for debate. There are plenty of destinations he’s covered that haven’t been inundated with swarms of Americans (see also: Gdańsk).

Steves says he assesses whether a place wants tourism, if it can handle it gracefully. If they don’t or can’t, he may mention it but not promote it.

He has faith — maybe too much — that his clients share his values.

“Does [my work] change the personality of a town? It can. Am I a dramatic impact on Europe? No,” he said.

“There’s a handful of places I really promote aggressively that I’ve had a serious impact on, but otherwise ... my travelers are the kind of people that take only pictures and leave only footprints ... they’re good travelers.”

You don’t have to spend much time in Edmonds to see why Rick Steves never considered leaving.

The city — population roughly 42,000 — sits on a majestic inlet. You can get to a major international airport in about an hour. The community is so courteous, it has an “umbrella share” program in case people forget their own on a rainy day. As Steves walks around town, he greets people by name. He lives within walking distance to both his favorite diner and a pétanque court, the French answer to Italian bocce. He plays bongos at his church on Sundays.

In 1967, Richard “Dick” Steves moved the family here because he was worried about Rick Junior.

“I was hanging out with dangerous kids and going down the wrong trail,” Steves said. Seriously.

His dad, an Army veteran, got by in the upscale suburb as a piano technician and importer. When Steves was 14, his parents dragged him on a work trip to Europe to visit piano factories; it was a radical experience that sparked his lifelong passion for travel.

Back in Edmonds, Steves started teaching piano, eventually turning his savings into trips abroad of his own — not only to Europe, but Turkey, Nepal, Afghanistan. He went to college nearby, earning degrees in European history and business from the University of Washington, where he played in the Husky Marching Band.

After graduation, Steves figured he could keep up his routine: give piano lessons during the school year, then travel during the summer. He started teaching travel classes in the same recital hall where his piano students performed. This was back when there was no internet and few guidebooks to consult for trip planning.

The classes were a hit. At 25, Steves turned his lecture materials into a 180-page book, and self-published “Europe Through the Back Door,” in 1980.

Four years later, he hosted his first European minibus tour group, serving as both bus driver and guide.

His businesses have evolved — his bus tours now take up to 28 travelers, a number Steves says is a sweet spot between making the tour more affordable yet enjoyable for customers and profitable for the company. But his mission has remained the same: to be the best resource for European travel and help Americans travel better.

“I just focus on that and I love it,” he said. “It takes my life out of balance — which is not good — but it lets me do a lot of stuff that I believe in and that’s good.”

Steves has been open about the challenges of being a travel mogul. As he built his empire, he was also raising a family. Being “married” to both took a toll. In 2010, Steves and his wife, Anne, divorced after 25 years of marriage.

Up the hill from his junior high, Rick Steves’s modest beige home offers a window into his many lives. There are family photos on the walls, from older relatives to his baby grandson, Atlas. He hosts political fundraisers on the sprawling deck. A painting of Kerala, India, nods to one of his favorite countries (people forget Steves did four editions of “Asia Through the Back Door”).

Next to his grand piano, there’s a stuffed creature that Steves calls his “Silver Fox” baring its teeth and wearing novelty sunglasses with cannabis leaves on the lenses — a nod to two of his interests: taxidermy and marijuana activism.

“It’s the civil liberties … it’s the racism … everything about it is wrong,” he said of keeping weed illegal.

As for the toothy fox, Steves doesn’t do typical souvenirs anymore, but he makes an exception for stuffed animals.

“The wooden shoes and the pewter Viking ships are so obvious,” he said. “I like to do something a little more organic and a little more striking and it takes me back there — I like it.”

He’s a very good piano player. He can also play the sousaphone and the trumpet — which he did regularly during the pandemic, performing taps for his neighbors at sunset.

Covid-19 was a nightmare for the travel business, but a miracle for Rick Steves’s love life.

After running in the same social circles for years, he and Shelley Bryan Wee, a prominent local bishop, started dating at the end of 2019. They had a lot in common. Both are progressive Lutherans. Both are divorced with adult children. But neither worked a typical 9-to-5, and one of them spent three months of the year in Europe.

Then lockdown happened. Steves, who couldn’t remember if he’d ever had dinner in the same place 10 nights in a row, spent 100 nights at the same table with Wee. It solidified their relationship.

“Shelley is a constant,” Steves said. He still struggles with the balancing act between work and love.

When the stars align and they’re both in Edmonds, Wee cooks, and Steves plays sous chef. They walk Jackson, Wee’s labradoodle, creating their own version of the passeggiata, Italy’s traditional evening stroll. They play table tennis before dinner.

When the world reopened, they started traveling together. They’ve made time for a few big vacations: a trip to Morocco, where they were caught in a windstorm that blew the windows out of their car; a luxury barge cruise through Burgundy, France, “that was embarrassingly expensive,” Steves confessed, followed by a week hiking in the Swiss Alps; and another hiking trip between remote lodges on Mont Blanc.

Before their first trip, Steves edited the contents of Wee’s suitcase, because packing light is part of his philosophy.

“What do you say?” she asked. “You’re talking to Rick Steves.”
