Peggy Seeger announces her 2022 tour

Peggy Seeger

Peggy Seeger, the undisputed queen of folk & political song, has announced 29 UK dates on her 2022 First Farewell tour.

Covering the UK from top to bottom and left to right, she’ll perform with her son Calum MacColl, a gifted professional musician in his own right and producer of many of her albums, including First Farewell . The tour will take in not only arts centres, theatres and civic halls but also a couple of tiny village halls and a performance in a launderette!

Peggy, now 86, says: “First Farewell is an odd title for a CD or a tour, but it looks both forward and back as I have tried to do in my life. I have toured all over the globe since I was twenty and it is always a delight, a new adventure. I am an activist, an advocate, a left-winger, an eco-feminist, a singer of traditional and topical songs, trying to speak in my own way for my own time. This may be the last time, but then again it may not ….”

First Farewell is Mojo Magazine’s #1 Folk Album of the Year. Named by the Guardian as ‘Folk’s First Lady’ and by the Sunday Times as ‘Folk’s Matriarch’, Peggy has 26 solo albums (and over 100 collaborative albums) under her belt. Few artists (and even fewer female artists) can claim such an impressive catalogue of work. Her modesty would prevent her from calling herself a national treasure, but she embodies the term in cultural significance not only for her song-writing and musicianship but also in her refusal to compromise standards or beliefs.

Peggy is the recipient of multiple awards, including the Association of Independent Music (AIM) Women in Music ‘Most Inspirational Artist’, Folk Alliance International’s ‘Lifetime Achievement’ and BBC Radio 2’s Folk Awards ‘Song of the Year’.

Peggy Seeger

Peggy Seeger: 'Folk is full of raunchy songs, but they're not often sung'

The American folk musician and activist on playful lyrics, older women and her late stepdaughter, Kirsty MacColl

T he New York-born folk musician Peggy Seeger , 85, has been working and touring non-stop since she was 17. In 1958 she wed a friend so that she could stay in the UK with her already-married lover, Ewan MacColl. She and MacColl went on to make more than 40 albums together, marry and have three children. Seeger’s partner of the past 30 years is the traditional singer Irene Pyper-Scott, who lives in New Zealand; Seeger lives in Iffley, Oxford. She has just released her 24th solo album, First Farewell – her first to be recorded solely with family members. How has the pandemic been for you? I was meant to be touring last year with my son Calum . Travelling with all our gear in the back: 26 dates, a fantastic tour, all slashed off, bang. I was doing tours on my own until I was 79, including standing at my merch table. That’s why I’ve got so many grey hairs. Now I grieve so much for the people who have died because of this pandemic. I also grieve for people of my age losing their last years to Covid-19. Your partner lives in New Zealand. How has that been? We talk twice every day in the three-hour windows where we’re both awake, trying not to despair. She couldn’t cope with living in the UK [before the pandemic]. It was too crowded for her and too cold, and I couldn’t live there. She is living a completely normal life over there – more of a normal life than ever before, I’d say. They’re lucky in New Zealand. Unlike us, they have a sensible prime minister . Your new album, First Farewell , is moving and playful. One song, Lubrication , has a lyric about older bodies needing “grease to help ’em do their jobs”. You’re relishing the euphemisms as you sing, aren’t you? I am! Folk is full of raunchy songs but they’re not often sung. I have another song called The Young Virgin, where a woman has 40 lovers who bring along the tools of their trade: a blacksmith’s anvil, the glistening pipe of a druggist, the lance of a doctor… [laughs]. I looked up things men called their penises when I did that and I was blown away. They’re all action. Women call their vaginas comforting things, about home, enclosure, hugs. Although my favourite is one from Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues : coochie snorcher. Another song, The Invisible Woman , is about women getting older and being ignored. What inspired that? Walking down Oxford Street when I was about 60 with my daughter, who was in her mid-20s. I watched man after man approach us, look at my face, then move on to hers, then their eyes look right down her body and up again. It was a pattern, and I realised I didn’t get that treatment any more. It’s not that I liked it. I have been pushed up against a wall, flashed, been felt up on the underground, all of those things that we’re now rightly talking about trying to get men to stop doing. As an older woman, people also ignore what you say. It’s as if you’re not there. I keep talking.

You have long been an activist for women’s issues. Do the vigils that followed Sarah Everard’s murder make you hopeful? We’ve been talking about this for hundreds of years. Hundreds. Meanwhile, another woman is murdered and another woman is murdered and another woman is murdered. Nothing will happen until men organise men to stop it. You’d think the men that don’t do horrific things would be pissed off enough to be tarred with the same brush [as physical abusers] to say to other men, “Hey, enough, guys!” They don’t listen. They should. Instead, they just wait for the anger to burn off and burn out.

Peggy Seeger and Ewan MacColl

Political folk is big again. What voices do you recommend? I like [singer] Diana Jones , [guitarists] Grit Laskin and Jack Williams , but I also enjoy Portuguese fado, Cesária Évora – what a voice! – and Dolly Parton. She’s smart and a hoot. Have you heard her parody of Jolene, changing the lyric to Vaccine ? That will save hundreds of thousands of lives. People will be going: “If Dolly thinks it’s fine, I’ll go do it.” Kirsty MacColl, Ewan’s oldest daughter, made music that was as moving and playful as yours. Did you get to know her? [Kirsty was born to Ewan’s previous partner, Jean Newlove , only six months before Peggy gave birth to Neill , her first son with Ewan. Kirsty died in 2000 .] I didn’t know her well, but I recognised her musically. What a loss she was. Her songs were stunning – I love the ones where she rips a man to pieces, like England 2 Colombia 0 [from MacColl’s last album, Tropical Brainstorm ]. I still play them for pleasure. Her mother was determined for her not to come to our house when she was little, which was hard. Then again, I’ve never had someone leave me for a woman 10 years younger. Is First Farewell your final album? The title has lots of meanings for me. My brother Mike’s band [the New Lost City Ramblers] would get together every year for an annual farewell concert and I loved the contradiction there. There are also always a few goodbyes when you take someone to an airport. One is when you’re in a hurry and drop them by the luggage trolleys. The second is when you watch them walking down the corridor, and just before they go, they turn and wave. This title opens up the possibility of that second farewell for me, although it might be the last one. Who knows? I’m still vertical and breathing at nearly 86. How much more could I ask for?

Peggy Seeger - First Farewell Tour

2021 album first farewell named mojo magazine’s #1 folk album of the year .

Peggy Seeger is a totally unique artist who has carved a special place in the folk revival of both the UK and the USA. Now in her mid-80s, her light burns as brightly as ever, still touring her legendary live performances that might include an unaccompanied traditional ballad, followed by an anecdote from her remarkable life, before launching into a topical song about drugs, war, hormones, politicians, unions, women, love or ecology.    A multi-instrumentalist (piano, guitar, 5-string banjo, autoharp, English concertina and Appalachian dulcimer), she is lauded for her feminist and political songs. She has made 25 solo recordings and participated in over a hundred more. Her 2021 album First Farewell is a collection of 11 new songs written and recorded with family members.

As Ewan MacColl’s partner and muse, she was the inspiration for MacColl’s classic The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (the title of her much-praised recent memoir) yet this is a woman who has consistently followed her own path with passion and vigour.

“A trailblazer, both in her musical life and in her fiercely independent spirit”

The Evening Standard

“Glorious - Peggy is a commanding presence”

“Peggy Seeger may be folk royalty … but there’s still plenty of the mischievous reprobate – not to mention the untamed rebel – about her”

Peggy Seeger Tickets

Peggy seeger concert tickets.

Grab a few friends and get ready for a night of fun with Peggy Seeger tickets from TicketSmarter. American singer, banjo player, songwriter, traditional ballad interpreter, political campaigner. Peggy Seeger is one of folk music's most iconic figures. From a famous family of folklorists (father Charles Seeger was a musicologist, mother Ruth Crawford was a composer, while her elder brothers Pete and Mike Seeger also became important folk singers), Peggy was entrenched in America's folk heritage almost from the day she first drew breath.

Some of the music's most legendary figures - including Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, Alan Lomax and Rambling Jack Elliott - made regular visits to the family home and had a profound effect on her. On a trip to Europe in her teens she suddenly got a call from the collector Alan Lomax asking her to come to London to play banjo for a TV show he was making. It was there she met her close collaborator and life partner Ewan MacColl, with whom she went on to run one of Britain's first folk clubs, record many albums and make the hugely influential Radio Ballads BBC series which, by interspersing traditional and original music with actuality interviews on different industries, changed the way documentaries were made.

The two of them were also renowned for their left wing politics, anti-war campaigns and controversial views about the way folk music should be performed (their Singers Club once introduced a rule banning performers from playing anything but music from their own cultural heritage) and they set up the Critics Group as a master class to analyse performances.

It was Seeger who first sang the international hit The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - written for her by MacColl - but she also became an important songwriter in her own right, notably acclaimed for her song I'm Gonna Be An Engineer, which was adopted as a feminist anthem.

After the death of MacColl in 1989, Peggy returned to live and work in the US for a decade before returning to the UK to continue her performing and recording career, which included an unlikely experiment with dance music with Broadcaster On Folksploitation (2012).

She became seriously ill but recovered in 2014 to achieve a new career high working with her son Calum MacColl on an album of brand new songs, Everything Changes.

Description

Highlights:.

  • Experience medieval Kitay Gorod (China town).
  • Wander picturesque Red Square and Alexander Garden.
  • Explore grand Christ the Savior Cathedral on our Red Square tour.
  • Breathtaking panoramic views from Patriarch bridge.
  • Enjoy a hearty lunch on the large open verandah and marvel at the stunning views of the Kremlin.
  • Learn about Russian culture from the local through relaxed cultural discussions.

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!

No wonder that Moscow residents love their metro. I will guide you through the bustle of one of the busiest subways in the world and show you the most beautiful stations Moscow city has.

Tour of Communist Moscow – every day

After the Communist October Revolution in 1918, Moscow became the capital of the Soviet Empire and was the center of socialist orbit for more than 70 years. The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle.
