Aussies on Tour: Four fall just short of victory
Ripper GC made it back-to-back wins in Singapore but it was an otherwise week of near misses for Aussies around the world.
Cameron Smith and Marc Leishman both finished two shots back of Brooks Koepka at LIV Golf Singapore, their collective efforts elevating Ripper GC to a three-stroke win in the teams event at Sentosa Golf Club.
“I kind of knew all year that we were going to get the ball rolling at some point,” said Smith, who combined with Leishman to win the teams event in a playoff at LIV Adelaide.
“I think internally that we’re the best team out here, and we’re going to be tough to beat when we all have our best stuff.”
Smith and Leishman were not the only Aussies to come within a whisker of individual success.
Queenslander Scott Hend lost out to Englishman Peter Baker in a playoff at the Barbados Legends on the Legends Tour while Stuart Appleby was denied a shot at a maiden PGA TOUR Champions title by weather.
The self-proclaimed “new kid on the block” with a Legends Tour win already to his name, Hend started the final round tied with Baker at the top of the leaderboard.
He held a two-stroke lead after a birdie at the par-4 15th but fell one behind when he made double-bogey at the par-3 16th to Baker’s birdie.
A birdie at the par-5 18th for the third straight day saw Hend join Baker at 10-under to force the playoff, Baker’s birdie at the first extra hole enough to edge Hend.
Appleby was not afforded that opportunity after rain heavily disrupted play at the Insperity Invitational in Houston.
All 36 holes of the scheduled 54-hole event were played on Saturday, heavy rain preventing any play Sunday as Scott Dunlap was declared champion.
Bettering his previous best finish – a tie for third at 2022 Regions Tradition – Appleby said after play on Saturday that he was coming to terms with what it takes to contend again.
“You’d think as you get older you’d just let it come when it comes and whatever doesn’t, it doesn’t,” said Appleby.
“Just try to get out of my own way, just enjoy the playing, go through my routine.
“When I played my best golf I got stuck into one shot at a time and that is something I have not done well enough.
“If I can boil it down to what the top players out here do, which is that, they really isolate a shot a time or putt at a time.”
Min Woo Lee was the best-placed Australian at the PGA TOUR CJ Cup Byron Nelson in Texas, Junseok Lee finished just outside the top 10 at the Asian Tour event in Korea and Jason Scrivener’s tie for 23rd led the Aussies at the DP World Tour Volvo China Open.

Taylor Pendrith wins 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson after wild finish for first PGA Tour victory
McKINNEY, Texas — Taylor Pendrith stepped on the 18th green trailing by a shot. He walked off of it a winner of his first PGA Tour event.
Pendrith, the 32-year-old Canadian, captured the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson title on Sunday at TPC Craig Ranch thanks to a 4-under 67 effort, but also in part due to a major mistake by one of his playing partners, Ben Kohles. Kohles carded consecutive birdies on Nos. 16-17 to take a one-shot lead into the 72nd hole, but a duffed chip and missed par putt from 5 feet, 6 inches resulted in the lone bogey of the day on the par-5 18th and gave Pendrith a chance to win it outright, which he converted.
“It was wild,” Pendrith said. “I hit a really nice shot in there 35 feet probably for eagle and Ben was in a little bit of a tricky spot. He’d been playing so good all day. I expected him to have a putt at birdie, so I was fully prepared to try and make that putt. I didn’t hit the best putt. I was a little disappointed that I left it short, but then when he missed his par putt and I realized I had a putt for the win, it was all a blur really.
“I’ve never had a putt to win a PGA Tour event, so my caddie said this is the straightest putt we’ve had all year and just knock it in. It managed to slip in the left. I’m pretty happy.”
Fellow Canadian Mackenzie Hughes celebrated greenside with Pendrith, along with wife Meg and son Hayes. Pendrith said he was at Hughes’ first win at the RSM Classic in 2016, so for Hughes, also a former teammate at Kent State, to be the first player to congratulate him was special.
The win is pivotal for many reasons. One, it gets Pendrith into next week’s Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina. It also gets him one step closer to representing Canada in this year’s Presidents Cup, to be held at Royal Montreal.
However, as much as Pendrith drilled the 3 footer for his first Tour victory, Ben Kohles painfully gave him an avenue for an outright win.
Kohles, a 34-year-old who was also in the final pairing earlier this year at the Puerto Rico Open, stuffed his approach shot to 2 feet, 4 inches on the par-4 16th, then he drained a 20 footer for birdie on the par-3 17th hole, giving him a one-shot lead walking to the 18th.
His tee shot drifted left into the rough, but his second ended up in a patch of rough in front of the 18th green. He had 51 feet to the hole for his third shot, which seems like a routine greenside pitch. It went 23 feet and ended up in a worse lie.
“It was sitting up a little bit, but honestly hadn’t seen any rough like that all week,” Kohles said. “Just didn’t hit a great shot. Just needed a little bit more umph on it. I maybe deceled a little bit, but you live and you learn.”
His fourth shot landed and kicked hard left off the slope, leaving him a 5 footer for par. He missed it, opening the door for Pendrith to pounce.
And he did.
Pendrith said he thought an eagle was needed just to get into a playoff on the final hole, and he pounded what he called his best drive of the week on the closing hole. Then his approach found the back of the green, and he lagged his eagle attempt to 3 feet.
Kohles, who earned the best finish of his Tour career with a solo second, then missed his par putt, one he said was a good putt, just the wrong line. Pendrith then stepped up, knocked in the winning birdie to finish at 23 under, the same winning score as Jason Day last year, and the celebration was on.
Pendrith is the fifth first-time Tour winner this season, the first since Stephan Jaeger at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, and it came in his 74th career start.
“ Byron Nelson is a special name, and for my name to be on that trophy is super special,” Pendrith said. “You know, it feels unbelievable, and to see some of those names on this trophy, it’s crazy. I still can’t believe that I’m a winner of this tournament. But I’m sure it’ll kick in soon. Yeah, feels great.”
Jake Knapp, the 36-hole leader and winner of the Mexico Open earlier this year, was stuck in neutral most of the day after starting Sunday a stroke off the lead. He finished solo eighth. Alex Noren signed for a 65 and a solo third finish at 21 under.
Kris Kim, the 16-year-old amateur from England who became the fifth-youngest player to make a cut in a PGA Tour event, shot 2 over in the final round to finish at 6 under for the week.
“I think just playing in front of the fans this week,” said Kim on what he’ll remember most. “It’s been quite a bit of adrenaline and everything. It’s been really good. Just makes me want to come back even more.”

Otaegui wins China Open to grab PGA Championship berth
Golf in uae, golf in uae world.
Win in final event of DP World Tour’s Asian Swing secures a spot at season’s second major
Shenzhen: Adrian Otaegui shot a superb seven-under-par 65 on Sunday to come from five shots back to win the Volvo China Open and a place in the US PGA Championship in two weeks.
The Spaniard finished on a 54-hole total of 198, 18-under par, to win the weather-shortened event at Hidden Grace Golf Club in Shenzhen after Saturday’s play was cancelled because of dangerous storms.
It gave him victory by one stroke from Italy’s Guido Migliozzi, who carded a final-round 67.
Second-round leader Sebastian Soderberg of Sweden, who started five clear of Otaegui, saw the title slip from his grasp with a sorry double-bogey at the 18th when a par would have taken him into a playoff.
He finished at 16-under par after a 72 alongside England’s Paul Waring (69) and Switzerland’s Joel Girrbach (67).
“I was starting five shots back so I just didn’t look at the leaderboard, not think about the result. Just play my game,” said Otaegui who won his fifth DP World (European) Tour title.
Otaegui’s victory in the final event of the DP World Tour’s Asian Swing secured a berth at the season’s second major, the US PGA Championship at Valhalla, beginning on May 16.
“Well, that’s very good news,” said Otaegui when informed that he had finished third on the Asian Swing standings — enough to get him into the next major.
“Playing some majors this year was a big goal for me,” said the world number 143.
“Will just be enough time to rest a little bit at home next week and then head to America.”

Live sports and events
May on Peacock brings some pretty major live events, including the annual Eurovision Song Contest, plus two of the year’s biggest sports milestones: the Kentucky Derby and the Indianapolis 500. This marks the 150th year for the prestigious Kentucky horse race, while the Indiana auto race is only slightly behind, celebrating its 108th edition.
This is also a big month for reality TV on Peacock, with season premieres of NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” plus an “extended and uncensored” version of the season finale of “Real Housewives” spin-off “Vanderpump Rules.” Peacock’s own original reality show “Love Undercover” makes its debut, following a group of superstar soccer players as they try to find love without revealing their true identities.
Here’s what you can look forward to on Peacock this month.
New on Peacock in May 2024: Top picks
'the tattooist of auschwitz'.
Love can blossom under even the most horrific circumstances, which is what happened for two Jewish inmates at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War II. This limited series adapts Heather Morris’ bestselling novel about the enduring romance between Holocaust survivors Lali (Jonah Hauer-King) and Gita Sokolov (Anna Próchniak).
Morris herself is a character on the show, played by Melanie Lynskey in a framing sequence as she interviews the elderly Lali (Harvey Keitel) about his relationship to Gita, just as the real-life Morris did in researching her book. Through flashbacks, the show chronicles the ordeal that Lali and Gita went through to stay together. Thanks to his small position of influence as the person tattooing numbers on incoming inmates, Lali is able to keep them safe while holding onto the hope of freedom.

Eurovision Song Contest 2024
Although it’s an institution going back nearly 70 years in Europe, this international music competition has been slower to catch on in the U.S. Still, its popularity has grown as it’s become easier to watch in the U.S., and Peacock has been live-streaming the annual event since 2021. This year’s contest features entries from 37 countries in Europe and surrounding areas, hoping to top last year’s winner, “Tattoo” by Swedish singer Loreen.

Because Loreen won last year, this year’s competition will be held in Malmö, Sweden, where musicians vying for the title include Olly Alexander of pop band Years & Years representing the U.K., and returning performers from Moldova and Iceland. The glittery pop aesthetic of Eurovision is pure cheese, and it’s steadily winning over American fans.
Premieres May 7 on Peacock
'We Are Lady Parts' season 2
It’s been nearly three years since the first season of this delightful British comedy streamed on Peacock, and fans have been waiting since then to see what happens with all-female Muslim punk band Lady Parts as they work to establish themselves in the London music scene while navigating complex personal relationships.
In the second season , the band will complete their first U.K. tour and start recording an album, while facing a rival band out to steal their thunder. They’re also still dealing with messy offstage lives and trying to balance their musical ambitions with family and home. Creator Nida Manzoor promises more original songs this season, along with choice covers, as the band members struggle to find their own definition of success.
