PING Tour-S wedge

PING have got the sole design just right here and however open you have the face, it still seems to sit right. The PING Tour-S works well on pitch shots, proving plenty of zip when the ball hits the green.
Why you can trust Golf Monthly Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .
The stainless steel PING Tour-S wedge has a Brushed Chrome finish, while its grooves are Tour legal, promising improved control. Multiple loft/bounce combinations are available.
The face can be set open or closed but the cavity design doesn't look as good in the bag as some.

Review: Ping Tour-S Rustique Wedges
The new Tour-s Wedge have a new tuning port in the cavity which is very similar to the S56 irons. (see Review here). This tuning port Ping uses to create a cast club with excellent feel. They also redistribute the weight to the perimeter for some forgiveness in a wedge. The design, feel and over all play made me forget that these have conforming grooves.
I ordered a 52* 56* and 60* with KBS shafts to match the S56 irons. They all have similar grinds which are on the moderate side. I believe you can get more aggressive grind from the Ping WRX department. They all have a great shape, and aggressive, yet conforming grooves. I was also please with how they dug just a little but no huge divots.
The 52* gap wedge served me well. I was able to use it most on full shots, but from time to time to keep trajectory down on chips. While the grind isn’t overly aggressive, I still found it to be fairly versatile. I found this to be my 110 club every time I needed it.
The 56* is primarly my sand wedge. This club too didn’t have any fancy grind, but it just worked. It was able to escape the sand easily and typically with good spin. I had many sand saves with this wedge. I did use it too from the fairway at 100 yards. I had very good trajectory and distance control with this wedge.
The 60* does everything else. I use it on full shots at 90 yards and everything inside of that. I was really happy with this wedge even though the grind was similar to the other 2 wedges. I could still open it up and hit the flop. The leading edge was sharp enough to cut through the rough to extricate a ball, but didn’t dig too much on tight lies.
I was really impressed with the amount of spin that all three wedges offered. I have sets of both non-conforming and conforming grooves. While there is some difference I didn’t notice it much with these. They are sharp and spin the ball nicely. While I didn’t have many spin back, I wasn’t dealing with much roll out either. I just always felt in control of the spin.
Rust is a good thing on these Ping Tour-S wedges . They look great, offer a non-glare finish and spin the ball very nicely. For cast wedges they even felt pretty good.

Why We Like It
With 25 stock options and six sole grinds, Ping wants to help as many kinds of swings as possible deliver the club efficiently through the turf. Spin is another important area of emphasis. The design of the grooves changes depending on the loft. Lower lofts feature volume to channel maximum debris on full shots. Grooves on the lower lofts (54 to 62 degrees) are tightly spaced so that the edges contact the ball cleanly. Throw in a friction-adding face blast, and you get more bite than an angry Rottweiler.

Performance
Look / sound / feel, hot list players feedback.
Ratings are based on players’ assessments in three key performance areas.
Full shots get up quickly and stay high. Effortless from the bunker. Able to create a lot of spin greenside, but it doesn’t stop shots from getting to the target.
Feels as good as it performs. Weighting gives you tons of confidence. Technology elevates shots quickly. Versatile. Able to create spin, get under the ball and escape the sand effortlessly.
Outstanding feel on full shots, chips and from greenside bunkers. Consistent. Gives you confidence, especially from tight lies. The bounce helps with exiting the sand cleanly with a lot of spin.
This is The Key to Good Wedge Play
A proficient wedge game can turn double bogeys into par saves and drop scores from the mid-90s well into the 80s. In this video, Ashley Moss shows you why solid contact is the first step to dialing in your wedge distances.

A shocking Backstryke putter appearance + 7 interesting gear photos from the Zurich Classic
Welcome to New Orleans, where TPC Louisiana plays host to the 2024 Zurich Classic. In between breakfast beignets and nightly Creole feasts, PGA Tour players are also competing in the unique two-man format at the Zurich this week.
Although the vibes in Nawlins are a bit lighter-fare than the recent back-to-back competitions the Masters and the RBC Heritage signature event), the gear news was no less serious this week.
We spotted some recent changes from Rory McIlroy, a very rare Odyssey Backstryke putter, dove into the bag of legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, and spotted Patrick Cantlay continuing to test new equipment.
Get your beads out and crack your crawfish, because it’s time for an equipment rundown from The Big Easy (meaning New Orleans, of course, not Ernie Els).
See all of our photos from the Zurich Classic here
Rory’s on-and-off lob wedge
Since the end of 2023, Rory McIlroy has had an on-again, off-again relationship with a Titleist Vokey K-Grind lob wedge. In his last start, it was on, and the wedge is back in the bag again this week. We got a great look at the complicated grind that McIlroy uses.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by GolfWRX (@golfwrx)
A full look into McIlroy’s bag above also shows that he switched out of the TaylorMade BRNR Mini Copper that he used at the RBC Heritage, and he’s back into the Qi10 core 3-wood. As we discussed last week , McIlroy will likely keep the BRNR around as a course-specific club, trading it in and out for the 3-wood.
See Rory McIlroy’s full 2024 WITB from the Zurich here
Turning Back the clock
Unless Tommy Gainey is in the field, it’s unlikely you’ll ever see Odyssey’s Backstryke technology make an appearance on the PGA Tour.
But then, when you least expect it, Russ Cochran shows up.
For more than a decade – since the 2013 Sony Open in Hawai’i – Cochran has been stuck on 599 PGA Tour starts. This week will be his 600th.
Cochran is in the field at the Zurich this week playing alongside Eric Cole, whose regular caddie is Reed Cochran, Russ’s son.
The Backstryke putter was first released back in 2010, and its unique design helps shift the axis point of the putter closer to the CG of the head. And, the putter is getting a nod this week at the Zurich Classic, thanks to Cochran’s 600th career PGA Tour start.
The putter is certainly awesome, but don’t forget to check out Cochran’s full WITB from this week.
Drew Brees with a Super Bowl winning Scotty Cameron putter
Drew Brees, a legendary retired quarterback for the hometown New Orleans Saints, made an appearance at the Zurich’s Wednesday Pro-Am, playing alongside Zach Johnson, Ryan Palmer, and current Saints QB Derek Carr.
Brees’ bag included a TaylorMade Stealth2 Plus driver, a BRNR Mini 13.5-degree, a Stealth 5-wood, a mixed set of P-790 and P-760 irons, Milled Grind Hi-Toe wedges, and a custom Scotty Cameron “New Orleans Saints” putter, which Scotty made for Brees following his Super Bowl MVP-winning performance in 2010.
It should also be noted that Brees has his Venmo QR code as a bag tag.
If you’re gambling with Brees on the course, just know that not having cash won’t work as an excuse.
See Drew Brees’ full WITB from the Zurich here
Stricker’s unrecognizable putter
Steve Stricker has made numerous upgrades to his bag recently, including a new TSR3 driver and T100 irons, but his longtime Odyssey White Hot No. 2 putter is still going strong. It’s the most recognizable unrecognizable putter ever.
Here’s a better look at Stricker’s flatstick, which he started using back in 2007 .
Patrick Cantlay has opened the equipment-switching floodgates
Over on the PGA Tour’s Equipment Report this week , we covered Cantlay’s recent switch into Ping Blueprint S irons, and a Titleist TSR2 driver.
Cantlay hadn’t switched irons for about seven years, so the iron switch he made at The 2024 Masters came as a shock to the norm. He simply isn’t one to change gear very often, so anytime Cantlay makes a switch, it’s news.
It seems the floodgates of equipment testing have opened up a bit for Cantlay, who was also spotted testing a custom Scotty Cameron blade putter on Tuesday this week. By Wednesday, Cantlay was back practicing with his familiar Scotty Cameron T5 Proto mallet, but it’s certainly something to keep an eye on going forward.
Daniel Berger’s custom Jailbird site lines
Berger, who’s currently using Odyssey’s Ai-One Mini Jailbird mallet putter, has a unique 3-dot, 2-line alignment on the crown of his navy-white-navy-white mallet putter. Looking down at the putter, it’s easy to see why this alignment system would help; it just seems impossible to set up to the ball off-center, or misaligned to the target.
Also, for anyone worried, you can rest easy. Yes, he’s still playing the 2013 TaylorMade TP MC irons, which we highlighted in our recent “ Modern Classics: Old vs. New ” video testing series.
FitzMagic teams back up
Brothers Matthew and Alex Fitzpatrick are teaming up once again at the Zurich this year, and Bettinardi Golf hooked them up with some festive “FitzMagic” headcovers to match this week.
See what else is in Alex Fitzpatrick’s WITB here
And, with that, we say goodbye to the Zurich Classic in New Orleans. Don’t forget to check out all of our photos from this week, including 30 unique photo galleries full of equipment photos.

I have a couple of these wedges with the KBS shafts. I have to say these wedges have improved my short game. Great wedges.
- 3 weeks later...
I have a 56 and a 60 with s300 shafts. Predictible distances, decent forgiveness, not particularly spinny.
love mine. hope they can find a bit more zip in the 60 in future gens.
- 1 month later...
These wedges do not put a lot of spin on the ball. If you want a high spinning wedge then try something else. I use one at the moment in 54 degree, mainly for pitches and chipping....the run out is consistent....and the feel and looks are typical Ping. Overall not a bad wedge, but not a great one. I still prefer the older Ping Tour wedge.
I do not have that problem, I get to much spin of these wedges. Looking for less spin on the Anser wedges I am going to try
- 5 months later...
copy and pasted from an earlier post of mine. I had the Tour-S and played them for a few rounds then switched to the Anser because well...I got a great deal on them from a friend. After playing the Anser last weekend, my initial impression is "nice--but not $50 retail more nice" (...obviously, I'm on a budget). For the money, the Tour-S is a great wedge for just about all players, IMO. Some general comparisons based on my several round with the Tour-S and 1.5 rounds with the Anser: -Tour S seems to ballon on me a lot on 3/4 to full shots. (my ball flight is pretty high normally). Anser seemed to stay a little lower on the same types of shots. (This might be a shaft issue more than a head issue. Not 100% sure though.) -Spin: didn't really notice a huge difference between the two. -Feel-wise, felt similar. One could argue that the forged Anser should feel softer but I didn't feel too much of a difference on chips. On full shots I think the Anser feels a bit softer. -Sound-wise: Tour S sounded "crisper". -Performance: Honestly, about the same. -Bunker: didn't get a chance to hit out the bunker. -Looks: Personally, I like the look of the Anser a little bit better. Both setup quite nicely at address though. -Fishing for balls in the water: equal performance. All in all, I'd say save yourself some cash and get the Tour-S. There are more loft/bounce options for that one anyway =]
Good wedges and the new grooves is what you guys are having issues with. The old grooves spun waaaay more from all lies but are not legal in future competition so OEMs are getting ahead of the game and put the new grooves into play for the public in 2011. Its hard to give wedges a fair shake when I know they are flat out not as good at spinning as the ones I JUST had....and not being pros we are in the rough more.....and less manicured rough at that. This is an excellent wedge all things considered and I like them in light of the previous statements...but my old wedges(with old grooves) were just naaaasty....
I recently got the 58/10 Tour S and am very happy with it. My course has inconsistent bunkers-- some with soft sand and some with firmer or moist sand--so I carry both the Tour S and my G15 sand wedge that has 12 degrees of bounce. I hit a wicked spinning bunker shot with the Tour S the other day and was getting nice spin on my greenside chips. The club has a nice versatile grind so it works well from different lies. Definitely a very good wedge and reasonably priced.

I purchased the Rustique wedges in 56*/12* and 60*/TS configurations from a big name sporting goods store. Both clubs have KBS Tour shafts. While I really like the overall performance and playability of the clubs, the new grooves leave me wanting a tad bit more zip. Coming from a set of early 2000 Cleveland Reg BeCu wedges, with spin-inducing/cover eating grooves, I think it's understandable as to why I am not used to the lack of spin from the conforming grooves. I'm sure as I play the Tour S wedges more, I will become used to the characteristics. Overall, I would say give them a shot if you're in the market for a new wedge (or wedges).
I love golf

I tried the 54 and 60 Tour-s, and I had no trouble at all getting them to spin. On full shots they actually spun back more than I would prefer. I'm very surprised to read that people are having this issue.

Great wedges but I still prefer the gorge ping eye 2 conforming low and sw the sole is amazing
- 2 years later...
Not the most spin, but super consistent and a great grind. On the 60/10 I can play a variety of conditions. Might snag a raw version as a backup

What we say...
Technology Ping’s Tour Wedge features Gorge Groove Technology. This starts with arguably the most precise milling process in the industry where Ping mill the Gorge groove so it can hold very tight tolerances to ensure maximum spin. By managing the process, Ping achieve the optimal size and shape of grooves for generating consistent, reliable spin and trajectories for confident shot making. The 17-4 stainless steel head has a traditional shape and features a custom tuning port in the back cavity that expands the perimeter weighting, creating a high MOI and a very solid feel across the face. The Tour wedge is also available in three sole widths: TS (Thin Sole) has the least bounce and is best for shallow swings and firm sand or turf conditions. SS (Standard Sole) offers medium bounce and performs great from most turf conditions and for most swing styles. WS (Wide Sole) has the most bounce and is exceptional in softer sand and turf conditions, or if you have a steep angle of attack.
Tested As reviewed in our 2014 Wedges Test: The three sole widths cover most of the bases, but it’s a shame the Tour sole, an effective and versatile shape, doesn’t come in more than 6° of bounce. The white bottom groove helps alignment. Spin levels were good from short range, lacking on longer pitches. Softer feel than most and there’s enough spec options to find one that works for you. Checked up nicely from tight lies and one of the easiest wedges to line up. Love the feel, but looks a little clunky from the back. Tour sole was the most versatile, but tended to dig in sand.
As reviewed in our 2013 Wedges Test: Opinion was divided on the finish. James and Joel enjoyed the darker matte finish while Kit and Chris weren’t huge fans. Testers noticed big differences between the three sole widths. The wide sole worked well out of bunkers, but didn’t make the wedge particularly versatile while James felt even the standard sole was diggy in bunkers, not gliding through like he’d hoped. James praised the compact head size while Chris was particularly impressed with how easy it was to flight and spin shots with a square clubface and the consistency of spin and strike. Being in Joel’s bag already, he was impressed with the feel and control he got but would prefer a slightly smaller head size. Kit struggled to highlight any other stand out features but said it was a solid performer with no real weaknesses.
As reviewed in our 2012 Wedges Test: Ping’s Tour Wedges come in three different sole widths. The thin sole works best for golfers who play on courses with lots of tight lies, a wide sole operates best in softer conditions and then a standard sole is also on offer for the majority of turf conditions. I play most of my golf in the middle of England on a parkland track which has a lot of rain fall on it – so I had a go with both the wide sole and the standard one. The good news is both were impressive on full shots, but the real stand-out performance with these wedges came around the green. I’ve got form on leaving myself ridiculous chips and pitches, but these wedges offered a huge amount of versatility which allowed for more ambitious shots. It sounds daft to talk up the forgiveness of a wedge, but these feature Ping’s custom-tuning port in the cavity which increases the MOI. It’s nice to know that even if you do clunk one out of the toe, the results you get are still likely to be half-decent.

Ping adds 6 new designs to 2024 putter line: Everything you need to know
Ping is expanding their core putter line in 2024 with 6 new tour-proven models.
With the sustained success of their core putter line , which features classic designs like the Anser and Kushin 4, Ping is adding six new Tour-proven models in 2024, including the Anser D and Fetch.
The technology
The 2024 putters from Ping offer the ideal combination of feel and forgiveness by combining trusted designs with proven technologies to give golfers options ranging from classic blades with milled faces to high MOI mallets with inserts to provide a softer feel at impact.

“The Ping putter line combines modern design advancements with the proven technologies that have helped Ping set the standard in putter design 65 years ago,” said John K. Solheim, PING CEO and President. “In this line, our engineers took a more individual approach with our most popular models, applying variations of our score-lowering innovations like perimeter weighting and optimized center of gravity placement while further differentiating them through face technology and alignment features.”
To further enhance the appearance, the 2024 Ping putter line also comes in two distinct finishes; a glare-reducing raw blast, and a durable black PVD to create a more striking contrast when addressing the ball.
The 2024 Ping putter models include the Anser 2, Anser D, B60, and Tyne H with shallow milling, along with the Fetch and Ketsch G mallets with a Pebax insert.
